hopefully Trenchworx has upped the quality and the stuff will no longer be plagued by these horrible mold / slip lines on the right side of every model and part.

At Victoria Miniatures we pride our selves with producing very high quality casts. It is very rare that miscasts get through to a customer. When this does happen, we are always very happy to send replacements. If you have an issue with the quality of Victoria Miniatures, please email me admin@victoriaminiatures.com, and I will be happy to address your concern. Thanks, Vic.

Scrapper's Grab Bags are live.

I'm totally going to stop buying these until I've used some of my backlog.

Next time. Then I'll stop. For sure.

I like the addition of legs wearing shorts for the female van dieman's landers. I feel shorts are underrepresented in guard units. Looking forwards to seeing more options avaliable in the shop.

I agree, i'm hoping Vic will create some short wearing legs to go with the existing male Van Dieman's squad.

The full female Van Diemen's squad was released a few weeks ago, there's also a new Border World piper model which has been added to their miniature of the month deal.

Looks like there's been a price increase too, i can't tell how widespread it was but most 10 model squads seem to have gone up an extra $10 USD.

Yeah I was just noticing the $10 rise. I don't know how long they were $40 though so it might be time.

Is Siocast new for the halfling KS or are some of the older kits already available/planned in Siocast? I bought some Acadians years back to use for older Kill Team, and they're absolutely great, but my dislike of resin has kept me from doing anything beyond a Kill Team. I'd LOVE to get some Acadians and Rangers in Siocast!

Its is new to us, but certainly something we are working on going forward. The recently released new pith helmet heads are all sio-cast.

Apologies for a bit of a necro, but didn’t want to start a new thread necessarily; latest work in progress from Vic is Desert Rough Riders!

https://victoriaminiatures.com/blogs/news/more-rough-rider-work-in-progress

Really looking forward to these, the previews look great. Also, maybe available as digital download? I hope so, hate having to deal with Australia-UK postage and customs fees…

Thanks Jadenim.
This project has been a long time coming. I've wanted to do Rough Riders for over 10 years. Its finally going to happen in the form of a Kickstarter in the first half of this year.
It will follow the same model as my successful Halfling Sniper Kickstarter from last year. We will again use three manufacturing hubs; Australia, USA and Netherlands, so orders can be shipped from a location close as possible. STL files will be available as part of the Kickstarter. The physical minis will be Sio-cast plastic and hi res prints.
Cheers, V

Nice! Is this the first time Vics has used Siocast?

Oh and just a thought, GW has a good claim to the term 'Rough Rider' as a trademark, it might be useful to use something else like future war cavalry or whatever in your renders and advertising.

Not only do I want to get my grubby paws on these rough riders, I would love to have a new spruce of heads similar to those used here. Even if it meant we had to sculpt the rest of the kaffiyeh on ourselves.

I might even have to try and fit the chap with the magnificently trimmed beard on the left as a tank commander, depending how far forward he's leaning.

Oooo, that’s a great idea, most of those torsos would make great tank commanders!

Thanks for the feedback. We used Sio-cast for the first time on our Halfling Kickstarter https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/victoriaminiatures/halfling-snipers-plastic-miniatures-and-stl-files
We use if for some of the pieces in the current range too.

The term 'Rough Riders' is used by multiple historical cavalry regiments, so I don't think GW can exclusively own it, but it is worth considering.
Cheers, V

Impossible.

GW have never been inspired by anything. It's in a court transcript somewhere.

Yet another KS I'm looking forward to. The Atillan design has never really floated my boat and the new plastics aren't scratching my itch.

I know it's a bit of an obscure point but it can trip people up.

Obviously it is a historical reference which cannot be copyrighted, but it can be trademarked.

Steve Jobs didn't invent apples, but Apple Computers has a trademark on the term for computers.

George Lucas didn't invent Storm Troopers but I'd think very carefully before making sci fi toys called Storm Troopers (I was shocked GW did).

Since GW, for the first time in years, is making a line of models called Rough Riders I would not recommend using the term in a rival line of models.

After Lucasfilm lost a case with the gent who created the armour, there is now a whole raft of Original Stormtrooper goods from bookends through lunchboxes to beers. You'll never see 'Star Wars' on that packaging though. I think Original Stormtrooper cannot be sold in the USA though due to Lucasfilm winning the case there.

Trademark related law seems very fluid and liable to change based on who has the most money to keep cases going and the best turn of phrase in court.

Back on topic.

Rough Riders, Grimdark Cavalry, Hoobleflumps. I care not what they are called, this rose by any other name will still smell as sweet and look tiptop on the tabletop based on the Halflings I received from the last KS. I may even display an updated "I'm a Backer' avatar if one is made available.

I ain't saying GW would win a case if they sued over the use of the term 'Rough Riders' (or 'Imperial Guard' or when DC comics had a superhero team called the 'Ultra Marines') but unless your money bin is full to overflowing I would recommend against taking the risk.

I would also recommend GW not spend the time or money, but as we have seen they sometimes will.

Interesting point on the Storm Troopers, I never heard that before.

One of the UK department stores, Marks and Spencers, did a fine chocolate Original Stormtrooper Easter 'egg' a couple of years back.

That was the first time I'd ever heard of the case and wondered about the 'Original' tag and lack of Star Wars on the packaging.

And it all boiled down to the use of red clay over another artist's grey clay.

https://www.originalstormtrooper.com/our-story-46-w.asp

Much like Chapterhouse, these guys were fortunate other lawyers jumped in to help them out.

"Lucasfilm then looked to enforce the American copyright ruling in the UK and brought the case to the High Court in London. After an appeal in The Times Andrew received offers from leading barristers to represent him in the case."

LOL funny.

Wasn't there something similar with Dr Who and K-9?

Anyway, to use perhaps a clearer example - GI Joe was a slang term for an American soldier.

It was later used for a long running line of toys, cartoons, movies etc.

Therefore I would advise against someone calling a line of Space Americans GI Joe. Somewhere in their background it is fine to say "like the American GI Joes of World War II, these future Americans fight on..." but if you name the product GI Joe then there is a trademark issue and Hasbro would win.

Once a company is using a name, no one else should make use of that name or they invite a trademark dispute.

This is a complex area of the law (can you name a line of Spanish American war miniatures Rough Riders? I legit do not know) but unless you want to risk using money and time to fight it out, why invite the trouble.

"And so like the Light Brigade of the Crimean War or the Rough Riders of the Spanish American War Vic's line of Desert World Space Cavalry fight on..."

The BBC now owns the trademark for the police public call box because they kept using it after the met stopped.

But yeah trade marks are not the same as copy rights, and turning some word(s) into a trademark doesn’t mean other people can’t use the same word(s) for something else. Just that using the same words for a similar product in a way that the public (the legendary “reasonable person” imagined by the law) might find confusing is likely to leave you open to lawsuits and other legal problems.

It maybe that GW is going to use Attilan Rough Riders as a distinction.

But it doesn’t look like GW has or claimed rough riders as there trademark.
Probably wouldn’t be worth the effort for them.
But it’s always worth asking a expert specifics.

It doesn’t help there is hundreds of rough riders trademarks, some in toys all ready.
And one specific to horse riding in Australia.
Would be a tough one for GW.

Just a pic of the bits from the STL reward tier.
To lure in the any browsing the thread, who might not yet know they need cavalrymen that maybe a little hoarse. .
Because it's a synonym for rough.
Okay that did sound better in my head.
