You got the thread title wrong. These all seem like Great things to say in a room full of nerds. I may have to make a keep a list of these so I can throw some out next time I'm at the FLGS.

I know no one likes a grammar Nazi, but I simply could not help myself. Is it really that hard to punctuate the end of a sentence instead of letting it crash up the ass of the next?
"Who cares, it's not important like football."
"This spaceship will clearly beat that spaceship in a fight."
"In ten years we will have fusion."
"Why don't you collect something useful instead?"
Don't quote Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Just don't. You'll start someone off and then you'll hear all those once-funny-and-loved lines AGAIN, probably delivered badly, and your love and fond feelings for that fine film will further dissipate and diminish.

Well, you just pretty much summed up University years for me.
I wasnt' really a fan of Python before Uni (I'd seen Jabberwocky - that was about it) and after uni I was less of a fan. Comedy is something that relies a lot on delivery - and when it came to comic timing, let's just say that Dominos has better timing. Now the engineering faculty were funny. Probably because they didn't quote Python.

If you're talking about the *original* Call of Duty (1999), this one is actually true, and some of 2's major changes were even bigger (no visible health percentage and it shared a regenerating health idea similar to Halo's shields, and did away with medpacks as a result).
Here's my offering: "why does Captain Picard never talk to Spork?"

What does that term even mean? I really don't get it.
It is a term used by certain members of the geek/nerd subculture to exclude female geeks who are attractive.
No, I don't entirely know why they would do this, either. But there you go. There's an underlying problem with misogyny in geek culture, and it's sadly a fairly prevalent term.

"Fake" is a completely arbitrary designation when used in reference to just about any social grouping, be it gamers, geeks, golfers, or anything else. One individual's standards of what constitutes being "real" has no bearing on anyone else's. Knowing this, people who call other people "fake" anything should be laughed at and moved on. It's not really problem, per se, unless you consider losers being childish a problem.
The example you gave is rather lame and nonsensical. I have a preference towards specific genres myself. We all do.
Furthermore, not everyone has either the time or the money to invest in buying and consuming every single game or every single comic book or every single movie or what have you, so everyone has gaps in their enjoyment. How many people on this forum have an apocalypse-sized army for every single codex in 40k? If they don't, does that mean that they're fake?
That happened to me once, Just sitting in a room listening to a video just loud enough that i can hear conversations.

I was at Comicpalooza this weekend, manning the Gaming HQ table, and saw plenty of awesome costumed girls and even costumed gamers girls (they played Last Larp on Earth (last night on Earth board game with costumes) as well as Pathfinder and board games. They seemed to be up with the rules of the games they were playing, as well as some "neck beards" I know. They were cute, gamers, comic fans, and into CosPlay. I don't understand the hate.

Same here. Although where i am, sadly not many cosplay. I do know some awesome gamer girls.
ike i said, Im sorry, what i said was stupid.
The problem with the "fake geek girl" label is... it ain't just the girls. There are a lot of people - male AND female - trying to jump on the geek bandwagon because suddenly a few years back, it was somehow widely accepted that being a geek was now cool. Needless to say, people who were geeks before this (myself included) take umbrage at anyone trying to look cool and really not putting any kind of effort or enthusiasm into anything that's actually geeky in any way.
On the other hand, the surge has seen lots of people genuinely gain interest in geek activities - and that I can happily encourage.
Or rather, you're attempting to try to make yourself cool because you want to be part of an exclusive group, because otherwise you feel that somehow other people enjoying the things you now enjoy are "diluting it". Don't worry, it's a waste of effort. You're not cool. You're a geek

TBH, That is my problem, I see way to many people try to act geeky, but know very little about geek culture. But maybe that is just a problem in my neck of the woods.

Arguing about whether or not you or anyone else is a "geek" is childish. Children worry about what they "are". Real people just enjoy whatever it is they enjoy without fussing about what they or others should be called.

Or perhaps it relates back to the social structure (primarily secondary education) that labeled those people nerds/geeks, possibly demeaned them for it, and drove others to consider them less than valuable socially as a result. Then, as the culture and nomenclature that had been used as a derogatory term to describe this individuals becomes more mainstream and accepted, the very members of the social structure that demeaned them (and many who did not) adopts aspects of their 'culture', perhaps whole heartedly, perhaps in name as a 'fad' only, as their own. The entrenched nerds/geeks who have taken their title as a scarlet letter and consider it something of badge of honor in the same stroke, now feel their safe havens and culture being altered by those who didn't share the same shame or social awkwardness that accompanied 'becoming a nerd/geek'.
Hipsters decry suburban youths adopting their culture, the urban population decries the 'posers' that adopt their dress and language, the geeks decry the mainstream.
I am not defending this sense of outrage or the term 'fake geek' (be they male or female, but that is a whole other issue which Melissia has referenced). I can just see where it comes from as I can with any social group.
You'll always have the basement trolls that resist change. Maybe it's a fear of higher social requirements as the rest of society peeks it's head into 'nerdom'?
gunslingerpro wrote: The entrenched nerds/geeks who have taken their title as a scarlet letter and consider it something of badge of honor
Are kind of pathetic.
Rephrasing the abuse as "You haven't suffered enough to be a geek!" doesn't make it any less dumb. Frankly, I'm GLAD that people aren't picked on as much for being geeky. It's a sign of progress.
And yet it still doesnt help that i have to put away my DND stuff for fear of looking weird? IT isnt progress. Like Big Bang Theory, Still much of that is "Point and laugh at the nerds" For peoples whose life it is, who invest time into it, they still get picked on.

Fair enough. But for some there is a lot of emotional and physical abuse that went into 'earning' that title. I'm sure you calling their suffering and (misguided) apprehension of others entering their interest fields pathetic really makes them want to be progressive.
Though it is nice to see education, imagination, and creativity be considered as valuable, if not moreso, than athletic talent in many academic and social settings.
gunslingerpro wrote: Fair enough. But for some there is a lot of emotional and physical abuse that went into 'earning' that title.
We're not talking about freaking medal of honor recipients, here. There's no real rigorous standard of what makes someone a geek, except that they enjoy one or more geeky hobbies.
gunslingerpro wrote: I'm sure you calling their suffering and (misguided) apprehension of others entering their interest fields pathetic really makes them want to be progressive
I didn't call their suffering pathetic. I called their excuse for their lack of inclusiveness pathetic.

If someone identifies so strongly with being a "geek" that they feel apprehensive or resentful about other people that they perceive as "non-geeks" enjoying what they consider to be "geeky" interests, then yes, they are pathetic. Sorry.

A very big part of the reason that 'nerdy' hobbies are seen as weird is that so many of the participants of them act embarrassed about them. If you act ashamed of your hobbies, of course people will make fun of them.

I'd proffer shouting "fake geek girl" at the geek girls will continue to insure a lack of breeding opportunities...
Michael Bay makes the BEST films. Turtles will be so much better if they are aliens. I prefer the Stallone Dredd. Howard the Duck was the best film ever. The Big Bang Theory is amazing/rubbish (dependant on audience) Star Trek only had 4 plots and they rotated them - evil aliens/someones relative is in trouble/holodeck/clip show The first matrix film was the worst. The first Hulk film was the best.
And one from the cinema which is completely true - I heard two girls talking in front of me. It was the scene in Lord of the rings with the ents destroying Sarumans house.
"Lord or the rings has completely ripped off harry potter - those tree men are just rip-offs of the whomping willow"
I face palmed so hard, everyone behind behind me fell over.
My other favourite was my dad (die hard sci fi fan of the hg wells/frank herbert variety) telling me Buffy the vampire slayer would be more believable in space. Because magic is silly and could only happen on another planet. My point was that neither Buffy nor Star Trek can be taken seriously.
Although his argument then invites cries of Space Potter!

I prefer the Stallone Dredd.
The Big Bang Theory is rubbish
Star Trek only had 4 plots and they rotated them -
1. I actually do prefer the stallone one to the urban one. Then again, I also prefer Judge minty to the Urban one and Minty over Stallone's one.
2. It's not actually that good. It's reality TV, not a sitcom about nerds. I've lived in a house like that (with fellow nerds - and I never wanted to kill any of them as much as I would like to strangle Sheldon or Howard. ). We didn't have a hot neighbour like Penny though. Just a crusty old cop.
3. This is not a point for argument's sake. It's true.
Then again, when it comes to nerd films, my friends tend not to trust my judgements on films.
I loathe LoTR, can't stand AGoT, think Firefly was overrated and the only movie with a dragon in it that I liked was Dragonslayer.
Ugh, I really dont understand the love for Felicia day, she only ever plays one type of character, I dont care if all she plays is a geek girl, she is good and brings intelligence to the role, But i hate HOW she plays it, She only ever acts bubbly and misunderstood character, in every role she plays, i hate those characters. HEr chracters is Eureka and supernatural are the same character, just different names.

My personal favorite, I wish I had a link to the thread I started with that theme up in Dakka Discussions, it stirred up a hornets nest that is for sure.

I could seriously link up about twenty to thirty of the things listed in here and agree with them wholeheartedly, and I've been a proud Geek for over twenty years.
That's the problem with any kind of stereotype.
On a side note to hotsauceman, really lad, don't hide from it, embrace it, and if someone doesn't want to be a friend because you're into this stuff, then they aren't much of a friend to begin with.
You should see my living room, wall to wall gaming stuff.
Wait, so there's been 4 pages worth of discussion about fake geek girls and NOONE has brought up Penny Arcade?
This is an injustice that must be rectified.
Spoiler just in case Dakka doesn't like (gasp) swearing.
Spoiler:
I got into hot water when I said this. "I really don't see the point in this raspberry pi, by the time I've bought all the peripherals to make the damn thing work, I could have had something a helluva lot better." Apparently that's missing the point.
I'm also dismayed that noone hasn't mentioned the greatest war known to mankind since cyclists started going on roads along with cars.
Apple Vs.... Anything Electronic. Anything.
In the office, the console wars seems to have died down a lot now. - "They're all crap and trying to screw us."
Incidentally, non-acting Felicia Day actually seems kinda scary. I've been watching her on episodes of Tabletop and she really is ultra sneaky. No real surprise though, she basically heads a fully fledged company now with 'Geek and Sundry.'
Of course, along similar lines, Wil Wheaton seems to have nailed down the 'massive jerk nerd' character in his recent acting roles, yet (assuming he isn't dying from the plague at the time) is one of the nicest people on the internet.
The star wars christmas special was a masterpiece of filming, best of the series.
The battle star galactica remake was awesome and the ending totally made sense
What? Are you talking about the 2004-2009 series? I think the majority of nerds would agree on the first part of the sentence, though I don't know about the last bit since I haven't finished the series yet. AFAIK, the original series sucked.

As a Star Wars fan I would take this further. If IV toVI were made now they would be as gak as the existing prequels. It's just Georges vision.
George is the kind of guy who's ideas deserve to be stolen by other people. because he has great ideas, and then he enters the revision stage and things fall apart because he thinks special effects are the answer to everything.
Start a game of Magic: TG and say, loudly, "Okay, so are we going to play 2500 or 3000 life points?". Then when it's your turn, say loudly, "I'm going to summon this monster and put him in face down position!". Keep going on like that and keep insisting that Magic is an expansion to Yu Gi Oh.

Yeah, it amuses me that Otaku is used with pride, considering its true meaning
To be fair though, they are copying the Rozen Maid anime...then again, unless you are a woman from the Hokkaido region, you shouldn't be saying the U.

I love this thread. If I ever walk into a new hobby shop I'm walking in loaded for bear (or nerd that is).
On topic in my local shop they had an all day arguement on wether a Star Trek ship could take on a Star Wars ship. You wouldn't believe some the arguements. Since I was playing a game of 40k I got to listen in on the whole thing. I'm a geek and even I had to try hard not to face palm or wince. My opponent was a friend of mine and kept storing the pot. At one point I through a dice at him (in a friendly way). And said "see this is why we can't have girls in here".
One theory, according to Happy Viking in his Frothy pint of metal videos, is that Metal Heads are secretly enormous nerds. Might have something to do with the fantasy and occult setting.
Well, you can see it with bands like Burzum ("darkness" in the black speech), Blind Guardian (go them) and like the ton of tolkien black metal bands (Summoning, I'm looking at you), but why would it spread throughout the group?
There's no secretly about it, most metal heads are openly nerds in this area. The punk rockers not so much, but the two communities intersect at a lot of points, mostly involving the fact that swords are awesome.

I'm with Kalashnikov here. You don't have to be an unfit, socially awkward introvert to be a gamer (that's not a bad thing to be - I was, and still am, pretty skinny, pale, and introverted). One of the guys that goes to my FLGS is super tanned and pretty dang ripped, and he's just a huge geek. He has one of the most amazing boardgame collections I've ever seen.
Of course, not very many geeks are like that - it's just the nature of the hobby. Wargaming involves a lot of sitting around painting figures, playing games, and devising army lists. It's not a very active hobby.
The sports/athletics crowd does seem to attract its fair share of jerks, but then so does the wargaming hobby. It's just that "jocks" tend to be fairly extroverted.
Yeah, I played soccer in high school, was fit, and was actually popular with women... in spite of the fact that I played D&D and was into hobbyest electronics.
It wasn't until coming under the corporate millstone that my social skills degraded to the point that I can't hold a conversation with anyone on anything other than 40k or work.

I won't say that I'm popular with women (I'm not), but I do take care of myself and dress as well as I can afford (I'm only 18, so I mostly wear what I can get at Target/Goodwill). I really don't understand why this seems to be so hard for so many people in general. Just go into any Wal-Mart and you'll see what I mean.

My boss has called me pathetic more than once for "playing with kids toys", wearing wrestling shirts or quote lines from my favorite movies or TV shows.
Geek to me is just another word for passionate, would rather be surrounded by people with passion than "normal" people.

Batiatus, ill have a smarties cooky please
But i agree with what you have put. I cannot imagine how boring the life of a jock must be.
As an athlete both in high school and after, and a dumb jarhead, I'd like to point out how full of gak this statement is.

I agree, But wargaming doesnt = unactive. I tend to do all that stuff at night when few people exercise, I exercise in the morning, run a mile or so, push up and sit ups and so forth. I think part of the snack food we gamers use.
Although i have learned chop sticks are great for eating cheetos while games.

Snack food for me = fruit and nuts. I'll take a banana and some cashews over Cheetos over any day.

I concur, I was drinking Earl Grey, hot, long before I knew it was the favored beverage of badass Captain Picard, as well as apparent immortal being Sir Patrick Stewart.
