Yeah, you're right, how stupid of me. We've all been kinda missing the point of Games Day, it isn't about sneak peaks and product previews and all that, it's about having fun!
More specifically, the fun you have engaging in your favorite hobby: waiting in line for hours to buy regularly available GW product at full retail.

Gamesday was pretty underwhelming.
I had fun but it definitely did not live up to the standard I'd hold the biggest gaming company's flagship convention to.
The swag bag was weak, a few buttons, a cup, a cheap water bottle and a pretty well done purity seal patch. The bag wasn't too bad itself, was useful to carry things throughout the day. I don't imagine they spent more than a whopping 5$ per bag.
The make and takes were really sparse, splitting 2-3 sprue sets among 4-5 people. It was nice to get free stuff, for sure, but with a 50$ ticket and no free mini it'd be nice to get something of decent value.
There was NO model painting.
There was a station to get your realm of battle board painted which was cool, but was only for people who were willing to buy or already had one.
There were some tables where you could play whatever scenario they had going, and GW provided 500 pt forces for people without armies to play. There wasn't any completely free play tables that I saw, I could be wrong though. I was told GW employees wouldn't allow you to play anywhere but at the designated places with designated forces.
The store had no discount at all.
Forgeworld offered the usual free shipping and ordering things without free shipping was great.
Fantasy Flight Games had demos of Relic and Blood Bowl card game, which was cool. The volunteers running it weren't very knowledgeable on the rules, but they were enthusiastic and cool which was fun.
The Space Hulk game was up to demo. Looked cool, but a bit clunky and not intuitive. I dunno if it's worth the 30 bucks or so, but the people there were pretty awesome and it looked cool.
I don't think they sold more than a dozen of those exclusive minis, and EVERYONE I heard talking about it were pissed about it.
Dan Abnett was awesome and hung around at the tables signing for longer than scheduled.
Vettock was super enthusiastic talking to people who approached him.
So, for a 7 hour event, there were THREE make and take events (Ork Biker, Empitre pegasus knight, terrain) which were about an hour each, some pretty weak 40k directed gaming, FFG demos, and models to look at.
I would NOT go again unless the event was extremely close, as I traveled by car from Connecticut. The real thing that kept me from being unhappy was meeting up with friends from all over the country.

Post by: motyak
What does the exclusive mini look like? Was it really colombo again? Nevermind, found it. Huh, not as good as his last one in my opinion (but maybe because I actually have that one). I know the pictures aren't quite a fair comparison but eh edit: goddamn I can't get this to work. Either the new one is working or the old one is working, not both reedit: thanks Ouze, missed that /. Honestly I have to agree that this was under par even for games workshop. I bought the mini as I can use it but I don't see why others would. Even the demon minis were misshandled by the judges( they broke mine and several other people). Not the Volunteers but the judges they even pulled out several pieces and handed them to people in line so they could take pics. So much unprofessional mishandling and horrible judging couple with no other comps like costumes etc. GW promised this would be the best yet and after 7 games days for me this was the worst hands down. The only good part was the convention food as those BBQ nachos were outstanding.
Btw I have tons of pics but they are on my phone and if I attach them then they will be in Dallas database so until I can get home and transfer them sorry all.

That Iron Hand dready is unfortunately lacking in iconography. Especially when compared to the Sons of Horus, Minotaurs and Emperors Children Contemptor dreads.

I have a bunch of pictures from Games Day here. These include pics of the Armies on Parade, terrain, some Golden Demon entries, etc.
I also have a sort of funny story from Games Day. I was looking through the program at who all from the Design Studio was in attendance. I saw Chris Peach listed, and it said he was the "Studio's master of army painting." So I went over to ask him a question about a painting technique. He is in a conversation with another guy so while I wait for them to finish their conversation, I pull out my pen and program and start circling the sessions that I want to try to get in for the rest of the day. As they finish up their conversation and the other guy walks off, he sees me standing there with pen and program in hand. He immediately pulls out his pen and says all excitedly "Let me guess: you want me to sign your program?" I'm like, "No, i was just planning out the rest of my day, but I do have a painting question." He looked sort of deflated when he realized I didn't want his autograph. Who do the GW guys think they are, rock stars or something? lol
He was a nice fellow though, and I did get some good painting tips. I just thought the whole "autograph" thing was a bit comical.

No, it was a huge crowd. The place it was held at was huge and provided more than enough space for everyone. 1000+ people were there, but because there was plenty of room for everyone to move around and get from one session to another without having to walk through people, the place didn't have that "packed" look.

Post by: Tannhauser42
Honestly, this Games Day seems to be a big failure on GW's part, according to all the pictures and comments I've seen so far. The "premier" event for the "world's best miniatures company" doesn't seem to be very spectacular. Some cool models, but no open gaming? GW just seems to not care so much these days. I'll be at the Ogre launch party from Steve Jackson Games in October, and I bet that will be a blast.
Nice to see a painted version of the new HH battle tank. Not quite sold on its appearance, though. Something about it just doesn't look right to me.

There is only one GD mini each year. Automatically Appended Next Post: And yeah, the lack of any actual news out of GD is hardly surprising. It was fairly obvious that this would be the case when GW started thinking that people knowing what they are working on more than 5 minutes before release would result in the complete destruction of the wargaming hobby.
And 1000 people for a US gamesday... again, not a surprise, since from memory that was about how many tickets they said they were selling... But it is ridiculously small, and seems hardly worth the effort. The last Oz games day I went to had supposedly over 9000 attendees. In Australia. A decade ago.

Yeah, curious to see winners myself and what entries won that broke rules/what rules.
I didn't even bother trying to enter my orks because I use 3rd party heads for example, so I would be a bit bugged if they gave medal to someone who did that as well, while the rules dissuaded people like myself from even entering on account of those same rules.
Sounds like it was handled pretty unprofessionally

Correct me if I'm wrong. After reading posts from Dakkas that attended this 'event', I get the feeling that it was what you Americans would describe as a giant crapfest, is this correct? I thought these gamesdays were meant as a way to generate new interest, loads of big reveals of new products, lots of things to do, you know, worthwhile. Instead from what I read this event was just going through the motions, offering very little but expecting you to spend megabucks then kindly leave?
It seems like you were expected to pay a lot for an entry ticket then realise you were infact paying to get into what seemed to be a glorified retail outlet. Surely they have to do better than this, otherwise why bother?

No, they really, really don't. If the gaming industry has taught me one thing, it's that gamers will pay good hard cash for absolutely nothing, if they're committed to the company enough.
GW can charge whatever they want for people to come to their retail outlet, because they can convince Bill (or Billy's mom, if he's young enough) that it's exciting.
PP's charged $10 for 3 low res image files and the fans still lick their boots. They could probably have included that as a KS option, too, come to think of it.
...I was going to try for rounding it out with a 3rd example, but those are the only companies that seem to have the clout to really gouge their customers like that.

The judges pulled out some and handed them to random people so they could get pics. How do I know tet were random because I know who's mini it was. Even worse announcing a winner who wasn't even in the category is horrible. Thank god she had some integrity as others won't. It was just an awful demon and games day and to see winners and top 5s who violate GWs own rules is a disgrace to the comp. truthfully those three judges made it an utter joke.
I'm curious for details? How did they manage to try to give a trophy to someone outside the category? And what do you mean by rules violations?
Really interested to see what crapfest went down here. One horrible thing with judges handing figures to random attendees, those attendees might not be random. Talking with friends who are professional figure painters, the boom to your sales/prices that comes with winning the Slayer Sword means there is fierce competition. I could see a friend of one of the top entrants "accidentally" dropping a leading competitors fig.
It sounds like the group of judges they got were pure amateur hour who never judged this competition before and had no clue what to do.

Slayer Sword Winner:
Won gold for Large Warhammer Model. I can see why people are going WTF, it is a Forgeworld model and should have been in the Forgeworld category.
*edit* just saw it also won Forgeworld BIS. Thought a figure couldn't win multiple awards?

@silent25: thanks for the links...
as to the Sword winner, and your general question, a mini can (and must to get a Sword) win multiple awards at one contest...
it has to be a gold winner already to be eligible for the sword...
so gold + Sword is two...
a previous Demon winner may not be entered again in a later Golden Demon...
the Forge World BIS can go to any model, even one that didn't win a trophy in it's category....
it's just whichever one the FW guys think is the best...
just because a mini is Forge World doesn't mean it can't win the sword...
if it can be entered in a normal category (Open category is not eligible), it can win the Sword...
cheers

Yeah, sorry...that's definitely a really nice paint job...but compared to past winners...not Slayer Sword nice. If that won..the field must have been pretty "meh" this year.

He just has a bad filter. People send him stuff and he posts it. He's an aggregator and it shows.

He just passes on the rumours (i.e. He's not a source). Therefore, if the number of correct rumours remains constant (I think it's actually dropped in general), but his site has been attracting more and more people, the signal to noise ratio will be pretty appalling.
Back on topic: where are the pics of the FW Apocalypse book? This is the second event they've showcased it at and I still haven't seen any pictures (except for the ones on the FW website).

Not to go too far OT, but that isn't correct.
For rumors that he directly posts and no one else has posted (hence his 'inbox' rumors), he is the source. This is no different than Hasting's source or Harry's source or Ghost21's source. Anytime you are the first one to post a rumor, regardless of what secret ball or spy or whatever you got it from, you are the source.

BTW the red avatar of Khaine won gold as well and was the slayer winners and the blue one didn't even place so yep. I will say whoever took the photos had some decent shots of my work though the light was reflecting so it didn't show the shades to well.
Also since asked I will say a couple of reasons why this was the worst games day ever. The JUDGES were manhandling models (I.E I saw one pile a bunch into his hand like they were his armies minis) they were dropping them (over 6 that I personally know of were broken when in years past maybe one...maybe). A duel entry had 3 models on it and was not on a base(both violations of the rules). Finally as stated they announced a winner for the Duel Cat that wasn't even in that category and they didn't even know. These are all rookie moves and honestly a bunch of us were chatting afterwards this coupled with so many more reasons made this the worst Games day ever. I'm not going to discuss the judging as hey if you got a demon congrats but suffice to say one of my friends won several and just tossed them on the ground because that's pretty much what they meant this year in most of the categories. I don't mean just set it I mean tossed it.
I compete in a lot of painting comps and believe me you learn to have thick skin. You gripe a little have a drink then move on because as stated it is subjective. A bunch of my friends and I go to these and we win and lose but you still have an overall good time. I didn't hear anyone of them say they had a good time this year and that is honestly saddening because of the amount of money and time you put into being able to go to one of these such events.

How sad it is that Games Day preview pics now consist of a small handful of Forge World models. Games Workshop itself used to display a bunch of upcoming releases and have product seminars at Games Day where they'd discuss things they were working on that wouldn't see release for a year or so. I can't believe anyone is excited about this or Games Day any longer.
I guess if you never attended a Games Day years ago you have no idea what you missed, but otherwise it's nothing but a reminder of how much GW has lost its way when it comes to making their customers literally want to celebrate GW products.

This is the best I could get. There were people crowded around the table playing a game so I didn't want to be rude and interrupt someone playing just to get a pic.

Well, here are my thoughts on Games Day 2013. Was it the "OMG, greatest Games Day ev-ah!" type of event? No. Was it good for what it was? I would say so. There were 3 sessions where you could build a model for free and take it home. For Fantasy, you got to make a Pegasus rider and you could then play in the floaty cloud tower game. For 40K, you got to make an Ork biker and then you could play on the lava table. These two sessions ran from 10am to 3pm, every 30 minutes. So, if you went to these sessions multiple times a day, you could walk away with several Ork Bikers or Pegasus riders. There was also a Make and Take terrain session that ran 5 times that day, where you could either make fantasy or 40K terrain. For Fantasy, they dumped out a box of sprues that contained a citadel wood base and trees, Garden of Morr sprues, and some fantasy fences I believe, as well as each person getting a modular movement tray to build your stuff on. For 40K, you got Cities of Death sprues and Battlefield Accessories sprues, as well as each person getting a modular movement tray. I only sat down for one terrain Make and Take, and I managed to snag 2 mausoleums, a fence section, and the death statue from the Garden of Morr, as well as a movement tray. I didn't even assemble them completely and just stuck most of the bits in my free GW swag bag. There were several people who were doing these terrain sessions over and over looking for certain bits and walking away with complete Garden of Morrs and Citadel Woods. So, technically, you could make back the cost of the ticket with the amount of free models you got. Free models that you could later turn around and sell.
The multi-player games they had going on were cool, as you picked out a tray of models and then picked a 2x2 section to deploy in. They had 6 different armies to choose from I believe (for the 40K game, anyway), and you got to use models such as the FW Great Unclean One and Blight Drones. I don't play Fantasy, so the only thing I remember for the Fantasy games was Ogres Vs Beastmen. They also had open gaming and had some new scenarios set up for the open gaming tables. Fantasy Flight was there, and there were several people enjoying games of Relic, as well as some playing the Space Hulk video game.
They of course had their retail store there, which included Forge World stuff. I wasn't there to buy anything (I support my FLGS instead) so I had no interest in that part of Games Day, although the line for Forge World was very long, as would be expected. I also wasn't there for the guest speakers, as they aren't going to reveal much info anyway, but people were lining up to go into their seminars. I was there to play some games on some awesome looking tables, make and take some free models, and take lots of pictures, and that is what I did.
So, for me, Games Day was what I expected, because there were only certain things I wanted to do, and I did them. I guess if you went with the expectation of finding out what the next release was going to be or see a lot of sneak peeks at future models (why would you, considering GW's policy of not revealing anything) then I guess it would be a let down. But I went with only certain things to do in mind, and at the end of the day, I can say I enjoyed it. But depending on what you were expecting, then YMMV.

No problem, guess I should have clarified myself. Knew you needed a Gold in a category to qualify for the sword, but didn't realize you could pull a hat trick with winning FW-BIS, a gold, and SS.
Though I didn't realize some of the giant FW models could qualify for the standard categories, but with the recent giant plastic models, I suspect that may have changed.

From what I briefly heard the GW guy explaining, each tower was controlled by a wizard of some sort. I think that model was supposed to represent the wizard/magic user in control of that particular tower.

*sigh* part of me was glad I missed it this year and part of me wishes I hadn't.
While I think that there was definitely some craziness in judging results it is a typical GW thing. This year just worse than the last.
As for the Slayer Sword I'm guessing there are several details we don't get to see.
