New Marine 'dex means new toy soldiers to distract me from finishing the armies that I'm already halfway through finishing. Actually I have been planning a Morifactors army for years, even got all the metal shoulderpads for a full company, but the new codex gives me an excuse to actually write up something small and try to finish it. (how many times have you said that too?) The plan is... 1000 points to goof around with and practice painting as I haven't really painted much in the past 5 or so years since all my minis have been in storage. The planned force is as follows...
I know the 7th company is meant to be a Tactical Reserve company not a Battle company but I'm ignoring that. Mostly because I think the dark purple trim on the shoulderpads and capes and such will look neat against the black and bone armor.
Tactical Squad 1 - 9 Marines w/ MM & Melta Gun, Vet Sgt w/ Power Weapon and Storm Bolter - BUILT Tactical Squad 2 - 9 Marines w/ MM & Melta Gun, Vet Sgt w/ Power Weapon - BUILT
Assault Marine Squad - 4 Marines w Plasma Pistol, Vet Sgt w/paired Lightning Claws - BUILT
Dreadnaught - Twin Autocannon, Missile Launcher, Extra Armor. BUILT
Company Captain - Relic Blade, Artificer Armor - BUILT
Command Squad - BUILT 3x Veterans w/Melta Gun & Storm Shield
Company Champion
Apothecary
It's clearly not a world beater list but I figure it will give me a decent base to expand if I feel like it, and let me have some fun building Marines.
On to the pics! There is a lot of cleanup left on these guys, mostly just testing poses and such right now, haven't drilled out barrels on weapons cause I messed my hand up and using the pin vice is more self harm than I'm up for currently. (not a Slaanesh cultist)
Command Squad - The Veterans
Pretty happy with these guys, aside from the blurry pics, will redo those shortly. going to add greenstuff power wires to their knives to represent the power weapons. I kinda like the idea of the headhunter marines using machetes instead of standard marine power swords, choppy choppy.
Apothercary. This is probably the most bog standard GW pose I have ever assembled a model in. For some reason it works, also I think its the first Apothercary I've ever built in nearly 20 yrs of playing 40k.
Company Champion, couple angles of this guy. Not 100% sure I'm in love with the pose overall, I like the dynamic feel of it, undecided if it looks goofy or not. Opinions?
Company Captain, I'm pretty happy with this guy. It's actually a conversion I did years ago. I put the upper body on a set of legs from the new Sternguard kit that I picked up today. I think it works nicely. He's going to be fun to paint.
Not 100% sure I'm in love with the pose overall, I like the dynamic feel of it, undecided if it looks goofy or not. Opinions?
Maybe try turning the sword so it faces out to the side? Currently it looks like he's kinda dragging it behind him like pyramidhead and his giant knife, or a toddler with an oversized stuffed animal.
Also, I think he needs some "bling" to make him stand out a little more as a company champion. Where is his combat shield?
Veteran Sgts for the Tactical and Assault squads. Pretty happy with these guys, especially the assault one, he's very "come at me bro" I dig it. The Company Champion is getting a rework, seeing if I can make him look less goofy, also upgraded his armor.
One Tactical squad is assembled and complete, didn't bother with pics yet cause, well... its a tactical squad. I'll get around to it this week.
Kiiinda got distracted from the Mortifactors while waiting on greenstuff to cure, so I upgraded my old Blood Angels Captain.
There's a bit of GS work to do on him yet I'm going to put a blood drop on the chestplate of his armor and possibly sculpt a bit of wrappings for the grip on his spear.
There is a load of potential here, some of those poses are just awesome. The BA captain and the scythe guy are particularly epic. I'm very much looking forward to seeing these painted.
Reworked the Company Champion a bit, new pose on the arm and new spiffy armor. He likely wont ever get an actual combat shield on the model since it looks goofy as hell on the pointing hand. Oh well.
All 1000 points are now assembled, pics of the Dred and the squads forthcoming, now I just need to order the proper primer and I can paint. Should give me a couple weeks of playtime with the small group to see what I want to add next.
CaptainStabby wrote: Reworked the Company Champion a bit, new pose on the arm and new spiffy armor. He likely wont ever get an actual combat shield on the model since it looks goofy as hell on the pointing hand. Oh well.
I actually liked him better before, but his sword was pointing a little to far down. If you could have cut his wrist and angled the sword out to his left a bit I think it would have looked really good.
In this position it looks like he is wasting strength holding his sword up in the air at an odd angle.
Yeah, I'm still not sold on it myself. On top of that without the sword trailing out behind him to counterbalance the fig he's way front heavy because of the metal arm, so he pretty much faceplants if you look at him funny.
I'll have another go of the arm behind with the sword repositioned. Fortunately I'm clipping all of the swords off the GK bitz I have so that ought to be easy to mock up.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Ok, aaand pics of the last bits, the Tactical, Assault squads and the Dreadnaught, Ancient Brother Stevius, because he's "helping" with long ranged fire support.
Both of the Tactical squads were built out in the basic SM rifleman pose, mostly to get through them quickly and to keep myself from doing conversions on every single marine, which I have a habit of doing. Both also have one marine aside from the Sgt who is in a slightly more interesting pose, those will be used as squad leaders if I split them into Combat Squads, also it let me play with different poses a bit more.
Assault Squad is pretty standard, nothing special to see there, those aren't the droids you're looking for.
The Dred is pretty standard as well aside from the brass tacks added to make him look a little different. He's also got an Ogre Kingdoms back banner because, woooo banners!
Primer arrived from Army Painter, wooo!!! Going through a couple tests to sort how to get a good look at the bone on the armor.
Also trying to decide on how to do my Sgt's and Vet Sgt's. Following codex color schemes would mean a red helmet for Sgt's with an added stripe for a Vet sgt, I'm a bit concerned the red might be a bit much with the purple trim for the 7th company on the shoulderpads. I was considering doing purple for the helmet on a sgt to match the company color maybe.
That also raises the problem of the veterans, Stern/Van guard are technically 1st company and thus want to have white helmets, which I dont think will look good on the Mortifators color scheme. I duno what to do there exactly either. I might have to do a few test models and see how it shakes out. Maybe make them "company veterans" and give them the purple helmets? Ugh.
So yeah, first 5 man group of tacticals coming up soon. I'm going in for back surgery on tuesday so hopefully I can get a pass on at least a couple of them before then.
@Frankenberry Glad you like the poses. As for the arms, well once upon a time I worked at the west coast GW Battle Bunker, like... right when it opened. At that point not only did we get a 60% discount on sealed product, but we could order bitz by weight from the UK, at like 1$ per pound I think, so, yeah I um may have ordered stupid amounts of things like a decade ago that are still in boxes haha. Wait till I get around to finishing my Arbites squads.
Captain Stabby, I'm loving the P&M blog so far, good work. Im a marine player myself and so love looking and reading through marine blogs, especially ones that showcase some interesting modelling and also chapters that are little seen or created by players.
I have a blood angels successor chapter that I created myself and like you I went for the seventh company. My reasoning is that you rarely see a company colour used on marines other than the usual colours for companies 2-5, but also that I think a chapter is better organised into ten companies that can all operate individually.
I too didn't want to paint red the helmets of my sergeants, like you I didn't think it would go with the other colours I was using. So I went with purple to match the shoulder pad trim. I figure that sergeants are veterans like terminators, van and sternguard, so all my vets have purple helmets too. With the new codex and the advent of sergeants and veteran sergeants I may now go back and paint a white stripe on the helmets of my terminators. Again my reasoning being that if you have ten functioning companies then you should have company vets rather than chapter vets.
Anyway, loving the posts, keep up the good and interesting work!
@AoT Yeah, I think I'm likely to settle on the company color for the Sgt's and giving Veterans the additional white stripe on the helmet. Will need to play around with some test models.
Recovering from surgery means I can only sit down in 10-20 min spurts so, yeah, kinda a damper on any painting or modeling for awhile. Busy trying to sort away to get a standing desk setup for hobby stuff.
I did manage to carve out some time to work on this guy though. I DESPISE the official Logan Grimnar fig, so I figured I needed to do something about it, as in make something completely different. 2 WIP shots here, still need to decide on which head to use, I'm leaning towards either one from the Marauders box, or the Imperial General with the eyepatch since I figure Logan is sort of Odin-like. With that line of thinking I should have given him a spear... hmmm. A bit of greenstuff work left to do to fill in gaps on the axe head and I'll likely pin it as well. It's just glued at the moment. Also trying to decide if he gets a cape or not. I really dislike the one from the WG box and I don't trust myself with greenstuff enough to try to make one. Dunno.
So I have been playing with lists in the last few days as a way to take my mind off of the pain post surgery. Also because the original intent of this SM army was that a friend challenged me to an 1850pt game sometim in the near future. (whenever I manage to make it up to Seattle). So to that end I have added a Deathwatch contingent to the army and I thought I'd throw a couple WIP pics up of some of those marines. Still working on sorting out chapter shoulderpads for everyone in the DW contingent which might mean I have to do some GS sculpting, we will see how that shakes out... There will likely be a steady stream of DW posts as I get the marines into a state worth showing.
Blood Angels Deathwatch Champion
The blood drop on his shield needs a little work and I am considering splitting the shield with a small layer of GS on half so I can do Inquisitorial script carved into it and then leave the other half black, or maybe red, not sure yet but I think he looks ready to challenge some xenos filth.
Deathwatch Brother Stabacles - Not sure what chapter I'm going to make this guy. Im thinking of either White Scars or Flesh Tearers. The ridiculously large bayonet makes me laugh muchly, I had wanted to try the conversion for awhile, I had seen someone else do something similar with the SW trench knife handle bit, I dig it.
And finally something I had been wanting to try forever. SW Termie with Mark of the Wulfen. The head is from the Hordes Warpborn Skinwalkers kit and the hands are oooooold Genestealer hands. I need to greenstuff a finger for one of the hands. Obviously blurry pic and he needs a lot of GS work but I'm liking where it's headed. I'll post a cleaner pic once I finish the sculpting work on him.
Finally settled on a head for my Logan kitbash. Pretty happy with it, he will soon be murderfacing my friend's Dark Eldar army.
Spoiler:
And I finally got around to reworking the Templar Calix Psykana guy I had done, His sword was originally grounded but it looked a bit wonky, so he got an upgrade.
Found a bunch of old models in my toolbox and gave them a simple green bath. I deem the resurrectioning a success!! I thinkt he asault marines will be used to fill out the Mortifactors assault squad to a full 10 man strength, the rest, dunno. I suspect some will likely see life as part of my Blood Angel army at some point.
I have been wanting to try this forever. Arbites pursuit unit. I think these will ultimately be used as Rough Riders countsas. There are some problems with the shoulder joins since the Cadian torsos are a bit narrower than the SM scout ones. I have yet to find a really good solution for that, even my walking Arbiters have the same issue. The bikes will also likely end up with the wings from the biker Chaplain to make them look a bit more Judge Dredd-ey.
I had this guy built ages ago, but there were some issues. He's meant to be a Sanguinary Priest in a Deathwatch squad. Finally got around to replacing his powerfist with a bolt pistol and dremeling out the neck and putting in the GK head which I think works well. Not sure if I'm going to leave the chalice bit as part of the axe haft, I kinda like it and I kinda think it looks a bit goofy at the same time. Overall I really like the pose though, he will be fun to paint.
Aaaaaand some actual stuff for the Mortifactors army. Messing with how to do a scout squad. I want them to look proper deathworld feral without looking too much like every kitbashed group of Wolf Scouts out there. So Im thinking bald heads or top knots, no facial hair, also more machetes than axes, even though thats what this fellow ended up with. Need to sand down the shoulderpads a bit more but I think he works.
One of two Blood Angel Honour Guard squads I'm building right now. These guys will go with the Librarian who is being built, the other which I will post as soon as they're assembled will go with the Captain.
My Honour Guard/Command Squads tend to lean towards style rather than substance, I dont expect any of them will be a smart purchase points wise, but they will look cool!
@HoeJarris cheers sir! Hopefully I can actually get some stuff painted here in the near future.
Speaking of painting... I am very unmotivated to do so, so I keep building random nonsense that pops into my head. This guy is sort of the result of a long conversation on the FFG forums for the RTRPG about Space Marines on Rogue Trader vessels. I jokingly said I was going to cobble together a miniature of a Marine who had been seconded to a Dynasty and kinda been forgotten about, and had fully embraced the Rogue Trader lifestyle. Initially I planned on cuffed boots, feathered hats, curved chainswords and very very fabulous capes, however this is what I ended up with. He was going to be a bountyhunter of some kind initially, but he's freakin huge, the chaos warrior legs and scout torso give him a lot of height, so he ended up being a RT Marine, or as I am calling him. Space Marine MurderHobo.
There is still a fair amount of cleanup to be done and I am strongly considering swapping the chainsword out for a Thunder Hammer or something.
And one with his good buddy, the Rogue Trader, Lord Captain Herpaderp of the voidship Fantabulous!
I really need to be kept away from toy soldiers and glue when I'm bored...
Finished with the second and likely last Blood Angel Honour Guard. At least for awhile anyhow. These guys will go with the Captain I posted before, waiting on backpacks for them but aside from that they are all done so I figured I'd post them. Aside from these mooks I have been working on painting up the test combat squad for the Mortifactors, they're coming along well, hopefully I can carve out the time to get them finished and up here this week.
First test paint for the Mortifactors. Wasn't sure on the purple for the casingon the boltgun but I think it works pretty well. Crappy lighting setup and I am clearly not going to be winning any painting awards but I think he ought to do for tabletop quality.
That group of honour guards is awesome, love the poses. Also the heads with the plumes look awesome, are they from Anvil Industry by any chance?
The Mortificator test model looks sweet man, not completely sold on the purple bolter casing, i think bone or black would be better. But still awesome model, can't wait to see more.
@uk_crow yeah the heads on the HG are from Anvil. I have another batch of them coming, just without the crests, going to give them a shot on a Terminator squad for the BA. I found a couple bags of FW shoulderpads the other day and I wanted something to make them stand out a bit more, will see how that goes. I may try a couple variants on the bolters for the Mortifactors, it may be too much especially on one of the Sgts who is going to have the purple company color on his helmet. :/
Quick pics of a Hammernator for my BA army. Anvil headswap and Forgeworld Shoulderpads. Will post the full squad later, need to get some good pics, super happy with how they came out.
Grabbed a box of the new Stormtroopers cause I wanted to try this headswap. Pretty happy with it tbh. Will post some non blurry pics of the group of them soon.
Which is just damned brilliant in every way, along with a couple others of folks poking around at building and fielding some Stunties. So I figured I needed to give it a go.
I knew I was going to want to try to do Exo Armor at some point as well as regular squaddies, so I grabbed a couple boxes of kits and began chopping and gluing.
This is what I ended up with for the Lord.
It's the Dwarf character whose name escapes me, with the back upper torso removed and replaced with the back half of a Grey Knight torso, some terminator arms (GK and SW) and the Thunder Hammer has been shortened because it looked way goofy in it's normal state. The banner pole is from the Dwarf box I used for the rank and file Squats. I'm planning on running him as an Inquisitor in Terminator armor with the Tome of Vethic. Because nothing screams "Book of Grudges" like giving your detachment hatred against a chosen enemy type.
I figure Squats have pretty much everyone on their "list" anyhow at this point.
@dantay Cheers sir! Over the years of building marines I have learned you can do a lot with little re positioning and angles on torsos and such, it goes a surprisingly long way towards creating a sense of "impending violence" which all Astartes should have imo.
Full squad of the BA Hammernators I posted a preview of above. Super happy with how these guys turned out.
And a clearer pic of the Stormtroopers with the Eisenkern headswap and the power cables removed from their Hellguns cause I like the look better that way.
Been stupid busy with work lately so I haven't got a lot of hobby time in at all sadly. Bashed this guy together as a prototype for a small 500pt list I'm playing with in my head. I've never been a fan of the SM scout heads, they look super derpy, and putting a SM helmet on the scout torso looks even worse IMO. I had some extra Scion heads and ta-da!
Picked up Stormclaw because... well because I clearly need more bitz right?
Looked at the loadouts for the campaign stuff and promptly ignored them and went digging through my bitz box, I had just picked up a bunch of choppas from a site a month or so ago. So I decided that I needed a Wolf Guard pack rocking Frost Axes and StormBolters, because choppy shooty death yay! Totally stupid points wise, but... they ended up looking pretty damn sweet I think.
I'll do individual pics sometime this week after I finish the last two pack members.
Then I decided I didn't want to build Krom the standard way because that's boring. So, yeah. Will probably pick up a second Stormclaw box shortly and do a proper build of him.
I missed quite a few updates here, but everything is looking really, really cool. The Choppa-Guard, Logan conversion and sword-and-board SM with the Anvil heads are all just amazing.
All my paints are in storage, so I'm just going to be building stuff while I'm here in Vegas. I can't be bothered re-buying all of that stuff, even though I'm really itching to paint some of those Wolf Guard.
I met a guy here who does commission work and I'm gonna have him paint up the LoD squad I built, mostly because I cant be arsed with painting skulls and flames on things and I don't think I could do them justice. I'll post a before and after of those as well here soon.
So, as previously stated. I hate painting. I'm not terrible at it I don't think, I just don't enjoy it. I like building and kitbashing stuff way more.
I met Ryan from https://www.facebook.com/flexcoastdesign at the local GW store here in Vegas and had him paint up my LotD squad. I'm super happy with how these came out. Will likely have him take care of the rest of the Mortifactors force I have built.
Working on a Librarian for a small marine force. Cant decide which head to put on him. Help me Dakka, you're my only hope!!
or
or
And also because I felt bad amputating the DV Librarian's arm, he got an upgrade. I dont play DA at all so he will likely just sit forever with no assembled friends. So sad.
Normally I'd agree w/ Kepora, but somthing about that first head just looks right. I also just want to say I love the conversions. I think I may be going to anvil to buy some of those heads.
Thanks for the feedback folks. I think Im leadning towards either the hipster beard one, or maybe the bald head with the respirator from the newer tactical squad box. I figure if he's going to be a Raptor that kinda fits with the osmotic gill adaptation they make to their helmets.
Need to acquire a new tac squad box to do that though. In lieu of that I present helmeted Scout Snipers because the regular scout heads look extra derpy imo.
I am about 2 nights of work (building wysiwyg combi wpns) from having a fully assembled army for the first time in I dont know how long. It still needs painting, but 1850 pts of Space Wolf terminators (and 2 ablative wolves) is just about ready to maul the enemies of the Emprah! and pee on fire hydrants. Oooh and I scored a Masters of the Chapter set in metal off of Ebay for cheap. Really looking forward to chopping those up and making them more awesomer!
Couple of my Wolf Guard pack leaders.
Super happy with how this second guy came out. The wrist mounted combi plas was a pain, but it came out and it was totally worth the effort.
Aaaaaand some Ork Nob conversions I planned years ago. All of the nobs for a mythical Ork army are meant to be based off the old 2E Ogryns. They're proper grunty. I dig em.
Xenos? Probably. Actually I think the best thing would be to model it as a scenic base for a thunderwolf cavalry model. A slight repositioning of the wolf's back leg and... bam! Objective secured.
I refuse to field TWC, I loathe them, but I might build that, just because it would be hilarious. I have something very special in mind for my TWC countsas models.
Landspeeder Storm for a small Raptors force. Sadly after tinkering and such I may actually drop the scouts and the Storm from the list, but... I have it now either way, and its magnetified!!! Except for a Multi Melta cause I didnt have one in my bitz anywhere sadly.Cobbled together a AC and a HF out of stuff. I have no clue where the flamer piece I used came from. Sentinel maybe? Either way, pretty happy with how it all came out. Speeder is magnetized to the stand as well to avoid the standard flight stand breakage and sadness.
Top down of Speeder showing where the magnet on the hull is.
Wolf Priest made from Coteaz & bitz! Pretty pleased with how this came out. I may do some more work on the helmet, not 100 on that yet, the angle on the wolf skull seems slightly off. I know Wolf Priests don't get Psyber Ravens but it always seemed odd that they didn't seeing as they are the literal choosers of the slain in the Space Wolf lore... black armored giants roaming battlefields choosing the worthy to join the sky warriors etc. Also the Coteaz pose looks cool, just needed a proper bird for the Wolf Priest.
Debating on filing down the back of the fur cape to put a backpack on. I think it may help tie him all together as a space wolf even more.
@Kepora normally I agree, but I have a handful of fellows without hats in my Wolf army and I kinda feel like this guy looks like a proper creepy old guy kidnapping kids from battlefields to turn them into child soldiers for the 'Emprah!
I need to rework the wolf skull helmet too. I think this may be the one model that I end up magnetizing the head/helmet options cause I like the potential for them both.
Had an idea about how to do a Kasrkin kitbash that didn't involve me scouring ebay for the old metal models. Below is the first test assembley I think I like where it's going bit he needs a different backpack. I'm thinking some of the Catachan veteran packs will work better he's made of the following bits.
TS Hellgun arms - These will have the gothic trim filed off the shoulderpads and the scope cut down so it looks more like a reflex sight, which it really should be given how the rifle is configured in the sculpt. I've also seen a few people trim off the tip of the gun and just use the foregrip as the barrel and it looks ok. Not commited to that yet though.
FW Cadian heads with rebreathers
Cadian Torso
Madrobot Colonial Defense Force legs
Spoiler:
Also my big mob of Wolf Guard all assembled and ready for me to put off painting them...
The ones with the Eisenkern heads are just stock from the new Stormtrooper/Tempestus Scion box. Headswap and removed the power cables was all that was done to those. If those are the ones you meant?
Just a few minor things I have been poking around with. Mostly been focusing on trying to get some painting done. *gasp* I know right!! Should have the first 5 Wolf guard painted up here before too long. In the meantime...
My Rogue Trader character from the tabletop RPG I was playing in awhile back. He's a plasma pistol gunfighter. I... may have basically made him Yosemite Sam. (old picture taken with potato)
I can neither confirm nor deny that I may or may not be totally ripping off the gunfighter/interrogator KrautScientist built for a rework of the RT in the near future... Just sayin.
Wolf Lord I am messing around with, he will get a few more bits and bobs to make him look suitably wolf lordey, maybe the cape/pelt, maybe not I really dont like that bit too much personally. We shall see.
And I also upgraded the goofy little duelist guy I bashed together as a RT Armsman awhile back. I figured he needed some more armor.
haha thanks! Looking back I should have ordered the resin version of the mini, then I could have given him a proper cowboy hat as well. As it stands I'm not going to be messing with trying to do that with a metal fig.
Picked up a box of the shooty Valkir and thought I'd see what I could get out of kitbashing them with GW bitz. Not 100% in love with the results yet, but I like the way it's headed. He's feeling a bit top heavy though to me at the moment but that might just be the shoulderpads.
Base for the model blatantly ripped off from KrautScientist, all credit for the concept goes to him. Used a different hooded head and different weapons. Still a bit of greenstuff gap filling to be done on him and I need to find a suitable shoulderpad for the left side. Debating on a proper DA plate, or one of the studded ones.
This may be a thing that's happening. Mostly because I had the bitz laying around and it made me laugh. He will get run as a lone wolf in a drop pod with a couple of wolfbuddies.
@kepora Yeah, he needs a grenade pack or something on his left side to fill in that space. Just putting a PA torso on the Heresy TDA leaves the waist kinda narrow. Bit of gs work to fill out the spacers on the shoulders. I might put another spacer under the pads as well to widen the shoulders. Not sure. The power plant is from the Chapterhouse truescale kits. I got a couple awhile back, but was never super impressed with them, the legs are far too weedy even if they have the right height. I might try one of their torsos on a set of TDA legs though and see how it shakes out.
Another Warhound wip and a Fallen Champ for another squad. The sculpt on the body for the fallen is weird, he's super hunchbacked, I think I need to dremel out the back part of the neck so he doesn't end up looking all derpy.
Since the cool thing to do right now is make a marine out of the Stormcast guys, I figured I'd have a go. I have been toying with the idea of a Siege Vanguard list for a bit and the shields on the Stormcast mean I probably dont have to spend a stupid amount of cash on FW boarding marines, woo! So, I decided to cobble together a test of an Astartes Siege Master. While I dig most of the Stormcast conversions I've seen, I feel like most of them are missing a couple things that really define the Astartes silhouette. The shoulderpads, and more often than not the backpack/powerplant. So, my attempt to remedy that below.
Theres still a ton of cleaunp to do on him, and I will likely scrape off the greenstuff lightning bolts on his shield and re-do them with plasticard, since I am all kinds of fail at sculpting. (clearly)
So, I was goofing around the other day with one of the Masters of the Chapter kits, specifically the dude with the Thunder Hammer. I have always really liked that pose, but I knew I didn’t want to just do a simple headswap with him, so I cut off the hammer and filed down the shoulderpad a bit to fit on one of the massive Kromlech chainsword/eviscerator bitz. I think it looks pretty spiffy. It’s not complete, there is some obvious gap filling to be done.
Now, the obvious headswap to go with it is the first one below, Captains crest, proper modern choppy loyalist Astartes, right. Then I started poking around with the various bitz I had and came across the WE Veteran helmet, which, imo totally works as far as the composition of the model, but… It breaks the image I have of Heresy era Astartes. I have always seen them as more brutally functional and efficient, less capes and frills and gaudiness (ain’t nobody got time for that), any decoration being primarily functional; crests of rank, vexilla etc… I’m torn, because I think a World Eater (or hell, Warhound) Captain would be a really cool model to paint up, I don’t know if the amount of bling is appropriate. Maybe I cop out and say he’s a Dornian Heresy World Eater Captain.
Wolf Priest, first thing I've actually got around to painting in a good long while. Damn the camera shows painting flaws. :/ ah well, good enough for government work...
Started working on a Pride of the Legion list in an effort to get some people locally to play 30k. Everyone wants to proxy their existing models, which is fine, but I can't do that. My hobby ocd wont allow it.
First test mini is about 90% done, but I wanted to get pics up as I'm pretty happy with him. I need to finish the freehand of the army badge on his left greave. I figure all my Vets will carry that somewhere. I also need to sort a purity seal or something on the left wrist to cover up the ugly mess that resulted in my shipping up that arm. I've also sorted a much better way of handling the jump pack harness for the rest of his squad. I'm hoping to crank through the rest of them by the end of the weekend.
Also still deciding whether or not I want to order some scenic bases or not so I'm holding off on finishing that part so far.
You have a real knack for great, dynamic posing that really makes the models look alive and in motion. The marines back on page 1 especially impressed me.
Can only agree with fifty, your poses and conversions are excellent. Loving the mix of manufactured products blended together, will be checking back regularly.
Cheers for the kind words folks. I have been distracted by HH stuff and not focusing on the Lions. Upside, I have a 1000 point Blood in the Void list built for my VI Legio, downside I ahve made very little progress on the Lions. :/
Test Wolf is testy!
Pack marking is much cleaner in real life, the black from the micro pen is picking up a ton of glare apparently.
@edc yeah, it's an Anvil rifle, I tend to mix them in here and there just because I like em.
@Kepora This is the only Anvil rifle in the squad, I figured veterans would be more likely to have variant kit, a couple are rocking the bolters that come with the MK2 armor as well, definitely mostly BaC guns though.
Im still working on my method for painting these guys, I have another one nearly done that used a different primer and basecoat, they both ended up looking nearly identical though, so... trying to wrap my head around which is quicker. blah.
