Q- What should I build?
A- A pile of random junk. This is not a 'mini-diorama' contest. While you may certainly build one it is outside the intent of this contest and will be viewed accordingly for judging purposes.
Q- What do you mean by 'random junk' pile'?
A- See pic below:
Q- How tall can the pile of junk be?
A- As tall as you want so long as it can stand on the base.
Q- How far over the base can the junk be?
A- Some, See pic for reference:
If anyone has other questions please PM me and I'll post them here for the benefit of other contestants.
CATEGORIES
Due to the excellent level of participation the following competition categories have been created. The purpose of different categories is to ensure the most fair and balanced level of competition possible. Category assignment for each contestant is based on past endeavors, available examples of work, and agreement between participant and myself.
Categories and qualifications are as follows:
Chaos Lord- Participants in this category have displayed incredible skill. Some may have had their work officially and publicly recognized through winning national contests and appearing in major publications. They are among the best artists on Dakka Dakka.
Exalted Champion- Participants in this category have displayed extraordinary skill. They may have placed in national contests and / or have appeared in major publications.
Aspiring Champion- Participants in this category have displayed exemplary skill. They may have placed in or won website / FLGS contests.
Chaos Cultists- Participants in this category have displayed distinct effort in their work.
Scoring
Scoring will consist of 3 categories worth a maximum of 100 points overall. The categories are:
Bits (40)- Materials chosen and combination used to build piece
Impression (30)- Overall impression of the model as an entirety
Scoring Criteria
These are things I will be specifically looking for and will be assigning points as appropriate
Add points for:
- No prefab, meaning a complete build of random junk bits (exception- the base may be prefab from any manufacturer). Examples of random junk bits are sewing thimbles, mechanical pen springs, crushed soda caps, broken computer parts, etc. Immediate +5 point Bit bonus for everyone that provides photographic 'as it happened' evidence of picking up a piece of random junk from a parking lot, sidewalk, dumpster, etc. This bonus applies only once. Multiple 'action shots' do not add multiple bonus points.
- Comprehensive list of parts used
Neutral points for:
- Non-wargaming prefab bits from models such as scale military vehicles, cars, trucks, etc. Sprue from any model kits regardless of manufacturer is covered under this category.
- General list of parts used
Deduct points for:
- Majority wargame-related bits
- No list of parts used
- Base outside size limitations (exceptions noted for individual request)
- Posting WIP on this thread
Judging, Winning Entries, and Prizes
Each category will have a 1st and 2nd place winner with Honorable Mention for 3rd. There will also be a 'Daemon Prince' popular choice vote for the overall contest winner. In the case of a tie in any category I will decide on the criteria to break the tie. Daemon Prince votes accepted via PM only and only from Dec 13th to Dec 26th. Contest winners will be announced on Saturday Dec 28th.
First place winners of each category will be awarded a personalized piece of terrain built and painted by me. Second place winners will be awarded a bag of bits from my bits collection. Winner of the Daemon Prince title will receive both. If Daemon Prince title is awarded to anyone that placed 1st or 2nd in any category that awardee will receive cumulative prizes.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING JUDGING Be sure to provide me with focused, clear, and well lit pictures for judging. 6 photos (front / side / back / side / top / scale) are required for judging. See example:
FRONT
SIDE
BACK
SIDE
TOP
SCALE
You may submit more photos than required if you wish and be prepared to have more photos available if requested. They may be necessary for a tie-breaker or other clarification.
Photo are very important. It is not my intent to penalize anyone based on available technology or ability to use it but understand I will have to judge your piece only by the pictures you provide. If you do not have a device that can take a clean and clear photo, please consider getting assistance from a friend / family member, etc. Your entry deserves the best representation possible.
I like the limited size of the entries, people will have to be creative to fit a lot of wow factor onto these smaller bases, will be interesting indeed to see the final results!
Got my eyes on scouring for random interesting junk, need all ofthe bonus ppoints I can get, we may be at the low end... but I see a lot of talent at cultist and I'm gonna have to step up my game to avoid a curb stomp
hdbbstephen +5 for 'live action' shot of collecting random junk:
Spoiler:
GrimDork- I agree that the limited space will force even very experienced modelers consider a different approach. And every category has a borderline 'ringer'. Search online for work other people have done for inspiration.
Biohazard- No pressure at all. You're competing with people saying the same thing. Ha.
MauS- Yes '4- Do not post WIP shots on this thread during the contest, and do not create direct links to your photos from this thread. You may post your progress on your own thread.'
I just started to look through my junk box...after I have found lots of good stuff I liked for the mentioned bases as a size referrence...and realised that most of my so cool looking junk was way too big for the limited sized bases...so already I need to review my initial plans...
It is a very tough competition due to so many good preps joining and skalk created a really tough nut to crack this will be lots of fun
I'm getting excited to try my hand at building junk piles! I've been scouring the floors and junk drawers for pieces to use, and have been thinking about my paint choices. I can't wait!
Concerning #1: How exactly would you define a junk pile? The parts it's to be made from are well defined but for instance, what about other elements and how will we be judged on it? For example, if you want to build a junk pile that someone's made into a makeshift shelter, or you want to make some critters in it, or you want to make some kind of junk 'vehicle' (some Ork vehicles may qualify) or wrecked vehicle, or you want to make trees or vegetation growing on it.

Junk Pile (noun) - an accumulation of refuse and discarded matter [syn: garbage heap]
That is the literal definition, and that is exactly what I am looking for. Vehicles will be too large for the base though chunks of a wrecked vehicle would fit in fine. I imagine a makeshift shelter would be too large as well, but making the pile that looks like the refuse from a nearby shelter or encampment would fit the base and the spirit of the contest very well. Vegetation is fine, there's no reason why something could not have overgrown the pile. Critters are fine as well, though if they do show up I imagine the nastier critters of the grimdark (Ripper Jacks, Rats, etc) would fit the scene better. But you never know. Bunny foo-foo may be the element that ties the entire piece together. .
Overall I don't want to say 'here's the 20-point check list that I'll be using to judge each piece' because I don't want to direct the creativity of any individual more than I already have. I've offered the base sizes and recommended the bits to make a scale model junk pile. That's really it. There are so many ways to interpret that, and I'm looking forward to seeing each and every one of them.
I've said it many times and I will keep saying it- it's your model. After this contest is over and long forgotten you'll still have an awesome piece of terrain (albeit small) for your table or display shelf or wherever else it winds up... maybe even on a junk pile.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Contest has begun. I'm already receiving 'staring materials' pictures and there's a lot of enthusiasm. Looking forward to seeing what people come up with over the next few weeks!
Sorting through my junk boxes at the moment looking for my starting materials, couple of ideas taking shape, may work on a couple to keep people guessing as to which will be my entry
Are there any limits on how much 'overhang' the finished piece has over the base footprint, providing it's fully supported by the base?

My brain is dumb. I have started, really got into the build. Started adding things to bring it into the 40k verse. Get done building, and take a look at my junk pile. Sonofa! That's not a junk pile at all!
That, but twice. Ok, give it a break, try again in a day or two.
'Overhang' in some cases is an inevitable result and having 'some' is acceptable. If I have to give a specific measurement, no more than an inch over and even then it should only be thinner items like a pipe or an I-beam or something like that. Here's and example of overhang that would be acceptable:
Still trying to find that special something that's just laying about and catches my eye. Wanna find one of those and then lob some junk in with it. We shall see!
Got around to building my entry the other day! :-) it's amazing how an idea can spur you on to really have a crack at building a meaningful junk pile lol! now for paint!
More contestants! There are a lot of different ideas being shared with me, and they have all been very creative so far. Looking forward to seeing what the rest of you come up with.
Where do we put our initial junk parts pile pics, do you need one, do you want it sent to you, or should we just include it with completed pic in a PM to you when we are finished.
I've got an idea I think could be fairly neat, but I'm waiting to see if Mr Bloodaxe thinks it's within the scope of the competition or not, I may be thinking too hard about it. Either way, I've got my pile of junk at the ready, so soon there will be a pile to paint
@ everyone that asked- PM the images to me. I am requesting a pic of the bits you plan to use, a WIP, and then 5 angled shots. I'll fix the initial rules for other people to see, and I'll also post a series of pics taken in the format I would like to see them.
The rough build of my entry is assembled and on my P&M blog. Hot glue does wonders for expediency. Got some fussy details to work out and then I can see about some paint
Came to bump the thread and announce I have a WIP pic on my page for those who wish to see. Glad I checked as I have a tiny overhanging piece.
I wants to see some WIP pics, in your thread of course , though feel free to post me here so you get disqualified and I have less competition alls fair in the underhive .
I am still rummaging through my boxes of junk to find things that look like junk. I have found a few interesting looking little bits so far, I just need some interesting looking larger bits to go with them... and then to decide how to arrange them... and then to actually arrange them... and then paint them... Still, plenty of time yet...
Master Azalle wrote: So far i've made three test pieces.... sat back and smiled... then realized *Feth* this isnt a pile of junk...
dito...i am really beginning to doubt my imagination in terms of comming up with junk... does this mean i am only able to make good looking stuff?...hmmm...
Currently have two designs in the wip stage on my blog - there's two more that are still to appear.
Was planning to have a variety on show just to keep peeps gueesing as to which was my actual entry - but now I'm starting to wonder which it'll be
I've been getting PMs asking what is junk, what am I looking for, etc.
I can't stress this enough- make the model you want on your table. I know it is a contest where people are pitting skill for skill, but in the end you 'win' no matter what if you have a model you enjoyed building and looks great on your tabletop.
For those still asking, here's an example of random and junk. I threw this together tonight in 25 minutes. I've decided this is how I'm going to build and paint the prizes so take a good look at this piece as you may own it someday soon.
The fun part I think is thinking outside the square when building a 'junk' pile! :-) I hope I've done alright with mine, but while you can have a junk pile of random detritus you can have a junkpile of a car, or multiple broken machines that is just 'junked' in a corner! what about a junkpile in a chaos stronghold? that'd be bones and torso's and old weapons i'm guessing :-) so like Skalk says just have FUN with it there's no right or wrong, just- Junk!
I have selected the main bits of junk to represent junk in my junk pile... and realised how small the junk pile is required to be... I will need to think about this...
Note- pic of the junk pile model I shared the other day contains a AA battery. Due to concerns shared with me I am going to remove the battery. If I were keeping it for myself I would not have paid it much mind but for responsible purposes I will not use one in any of the junk pile prizes I will be awarding.
I'm starting to get some excellent 'before' shots and have 1 completed entry. Well done all around so far.
I'll post 'final entry' photo examples this weekend for people that are done or getting close. The examples will be in the rules section of this thread.
Also want to remind any lurkers that the contest is open to anyone and has 23 days remaining.
Hoping everyone is having a decent time with all of this!
there is something bugging me skalk for quite some time... regarding the rules i am still not sure that my entry i am working on is viable... so as you stated yu wont visit our threads till the contest is finished... may i ask you via PM if the entry will be allowed?
Viktor von Domm wrote: so as you stated yu wont visit our threads till the contest is finished... may i ask you via PM if the entry will be allowed?
Sorry Vik, miscommunication on my part. If you post something on your blog PM me and I'll check it out. When I said I wouldn't be visiting threads I meant that I won't be surfing Dakka to say 'hi' as much for a while. Apologies for the confusion. And yes, please PM me when you have work to share, I will check it out as soon as I can. That info is good for everyone. PM me and I'll check things out and reply asap.

**edit**
More contestants!
Many thanks for that reassureance, was much needed!
I've got a few touches and then I can paint. This is gonna be a bit of a bear to paint, and ima n00b at rust. I should get it done, may or may not be happy with paint job.. but it should get done.
i have to say... skalk you sure have done something right here... i doubt we have had so many participants in any other competition ever...one category alone suffice for one comp
I had no idea all this would happen, but I'm glad that people are having this much fun with it.
..
I've rec'd a couple PMs with questions about rust so I put together a collection of ideas for rust effects. It's not a tut , it's just some ideas. Hope this helps anyone with those questions.
Well guys i'm nearly done with mine :-) while I still don't think i'm quite up there enough in skill to be a Chaos Lord i'm more than happy to have a good crack at it! nothing ventured nothing gained right! i've perhaps not gone as 'big' in regards to piles of junk but I kinda themed mine and hope the paint while simple, pulls it together :-)
Whew, Haven't even started yet. I have some ideas that involve junk parts I know I have around my desk SOMEWHERE, but I couldn't find them before I headed out of town again. I'll be back with a week left in the contest, so it might be tight, but I should be able to get something going. I'll be looking for small junk while I'm away.
Good luck everyone! Looking forward to seeing the final entries!
Ooooh-kaaaaay. I just spentinvested the better part of an hour watching rust videos...now I definitely need an airbrush. I think I can get away with brushes for this comp, though. I just primed some old barrels and jerry cans (still on a sprue from an old 1/35th tank model) to practice on.
I'll share my adventures in learning weathering techniques on my junk pile project log.
I'm gonna have to bust my hump in order to get on top of my heap! Looks like I may get some time behind a brush this week, but so much painting and weathering and tricks and techniques all on one 40mm base! Too much fun, my friends.
My mystical modelling mojo is still MIA, so I'm now fairly confident my entry is going to be one of the pieces I have in progress at the moment. I know it's only tiny and junky but I'm really struggling motivation-wise at present
I have been futzing around with other things and decided that today I needed to buckle down and get the basic framework done, so the putty and GS can cure over the holiday.
I am really excited about the opportunity to get a bunch of practice doing rust and corrosion.
Ooh I'll have to go check that out. Just started spraying mine. Lots of yellow so far... can't decide if I wanna mess with masking things off or just switch to brushes already.
But now for the painting and basing.
The move is throwing me of twice. First, can't find a lot of stuff, like flock and paints. Second, Time.!!!!!!! There's not much of that left now that were getting into the painting and moving to the new place....
Hopefully I can still get it done.
@ Sanka- do what you can, if you can. This is supposed to be the most 'no pressure' project imaginable. A small well-done pile is better than a huge 'not so well done' pile.
received 3 completed entries today! Things are heating up in the Cultist category for sure.
10 days left, still time for anyone to join. It doesn't matter if you submit today or right at the deadline, it's submitted for judging either way.
Bump...Painted my entry yesterday while watching the first season of ripper street....took some pictures of it today in the bright day light....scared the crap out of me....so back to a re-paint it is
@Skalk--are you going to be posting pics of everyone's finished product on this thread? or are we going to have to hunt those down ourselves? i know i am not alone in wanting to see what everyone has been up to...
Just uploading some WIP's as I type - will add them to my PLog. After plonking some bits down and completely ignoring my drawn plan I seem to have built almost more of a building than a junk pile... hopefully I will be able to pile up some more junk around the whole thing to make it work as a junk pile
Photos submitted by contestants will be posted here for review. I'll be posting 1 pic of each entry. If anyone needs additional pictures for the Daemon Prince voting I will do what I can to make them all available.
Here are the final builds of the contest prizes. Space Marine displayed for scale ref only.
Daemon Prince:
Exalted Champion / Chaos Lord:
Aspiring Champion / Chaos Cultists:
I will not have these painted by the end of the Daemon Prince voting. I have some time off over the upcoming holidays and expect to have them mailed out by the 1st or 2nd week of January 2014. Prize winners will be advised when models have been shipped.
Just added some ramblings and WIP's to my Plog, after sorting through some - a lot - of junk, and coming up and disregarding half a dozen plans, I got something done at last.
I have to change things just a bit- please email all photos directly to my email address skalkbloodaxe@outlook.com
Reminder- I want 6 photos (front, side, rear, side, top, and scale). More photos than the minimum are allowed and will be reviewed during the judging phase.
Apologies for the change. If sending photos via email is not possible then send me the link wherever they are posted and I'll log to it.
There's a bit over 189 hrs left before contest closes. Still plenty of time to enter and submit an entry.

If you have already submitted your entry this request does not apply, you are all set.
Mine is in, along with excessively large pic files pleased with how one very experimental weathering technique worked, as for the rest that's ob the hands of the Skalk
I need to do some stuff, but I'm close. Definitely not going to win any awards, but it has been fun to do and try out a couple of things. Gotta finish up and take the obligatory shots.
Looking forward to seeing what everyone has come up with
Are we ok to use a single prefab bit if we feel it brings a piece together? I have one tiny GW bit that I want to add but I am not sure about it if adding the single piece affects scoring.
Not sure if i will be able to get this in on time... going back down to london on thursday for my exams and still have lota of prep to do (both for the exams and the junk pile! ).
@ nerdfest09- sorry for the stress, you are all set.
@ graven- via your photo gallery or email to me?
@ GrimDork- Don't sell yourself short.
@ Commander Cain- Plenty of time left.
@ Rabid Ferret- A few GW bitz are not going to affect judging.
@ Andy_T , Theophony, and daemonhunter187- You are all set w/ your submission, thank you.
@ Silver- Whatever you have, submit it if you can. Some points are better than none.
@ BrianCJ- Whatever you can do.
@ hdbbstephen- Looking forward to seeing how your new rust turns out.
4 days 5 hrs left. Entries are starting to come in in, thank you to everyone that has submitted your entry so far. This has been a fun contest to run and I hope it has been for you to participate.
Reminders:
- Entries are due by 5pm (1700) EST. Entries submitted after that cannot be included for judging to maintain fairness. However If there is a distinct and egregious reason why you cannot / were unable to submit at that time PM me for consideration. A simple "I didn't have time" will not be accepted, nor will any consideration regardless of situation after the official entry photos are posted.
- Popular vote' for Daemon Prince (best overall entry) starts the day entry pics are posted here and will be accepted via PM only until Dec 28th and will be counted up until results are posted. Judging results for all categories will be posted sometime on Saturday Dec 28th.
***
A list of contestants that submitted for judging will be posted here Friday Dec 13th soon after 5pm (1700) EST. If I fail to include someone that submitted it is only due to oversight, please PM me and I'll make the correction.
Photos of completed entries will be posted sometime between Friday Dec 13th to Sunday Dec 15th depending on my schedule.
First Place and Daemon Prince winners will be contacted individually via PM for the est arrival date of your prize. 2nd place winner packages are prepped and ready for mailing sometime between Dec 30th to January 3rd.
Since I was at that point, I took the first rust tutorial I could find on the dakka tutorial pages and ran with it. Fairly happy with the results, as well as with my first determined effort at making my pigment purchase worthwhile. I've still got to take the pictures, which honestly is the hardest part for me Hoping to submit my entry tonight or tomorrow.
It's almost "pencils down" time, can't wait to see everyone's work when the contest is over
@ hdbbstephen- I'm looking forward to seeing your final product.
@ GrimDork- Take a lot of pictures from each angle and choose the best ones of the lot.
@ OneManNoodles- I received your entry via PM. No worries, you're not the only one.
@ nerdfest09- I do not have the list compiled yet as I'm going for a 'one shot' effort once the contest has closed. Though guessing I'd say around 10 completed entries. I expect that number to grow significantly before the contest closes, and I strongly suspect there is at least one '30 seconds to spare' surprise entry from someone that never announced their participation... or not.
60 hours left. Contest is still open to anyone even now. There is more than enough time to start and finish.
@ Snrub- Yes, you must provide one WIP picture that does not have paint. It is acceptable if a repurposed part on your model has paint from a previous project.
Counting down to 48 hrs before contest ends. Still time to start and complete a project.
Prize update- I'm making an effort to have them finished when the contest results are posted. Previous delay notice was due to projected IRL scheduling.
Alrighty, I've just submitted my 6 entry photos to your mailbox, Skalk. Let me know if you didn't get them or need anything different. There should be 12-13 images going into my gallery page later on tonight if you need any more.
Glad to be done Always get nervous close to a deadline, like to forget things. Good luck to you all, I look very much forward to seeing what you've all been doing
Skalk Bloodaxe wrote: @ Snrub- Yes, you must provide one WIP picture that does not have paint. It is acceptable if a repurposed part on your model has paint from a previous project.
Alright then. If I make my piece and enter it in time then I will be cutting it seriously close to the deadline.
Whoops, I forgot my WiP shot, though come to think of it... I did PM Skalk with one in the early days of the contest. Let me know, boss, and I'll send it your way again if necessary!
Hopefully I've done my maths right and I have till 2200 here...so I can add a few more touches to mine...it won't get to where I wanted it with the effort I'll be able to put in, but it'll be getting there...
@ monkeytroll & weetyskemian44- Yes about the time.
@ weetyskemian44- Sorry you could not finish. If you do finish it after the contest I hope to see it.
***Just under 8 hrs left as I post this (0914 EST). I've rec'd quite a few entries. If you're lurking and have a surprise entry, now would be the time to submit it.***
It's been too damn cold in my shop to do anything. So I don't have an entry sadly. We're going to get one of those electric fireplace/TV stand pieces of furniture soon though.
@ chilledmonkeybrains- There will be more from me in the future. Also, check out the latest LoER contest thread. Judging is coming soon and a new contest will be starting up.
@ whalemusic360 & dsteingass- I understand IRL. Next time hopefully.
@ monkeytroll- Excellent. Looking forward to seeing it later.
Just sent an email to skalkbloodaxe@outlook.com . Please confirm that you got it. I can re send. I'm quite astonished I finished anything even if it's not all that great.
WIP PHOTO
Arrrgh. I must have missed that requirement. I have WIP posted on my blog, but I am at work right now and cant send.
Graaaaghgh.
Falls to ground in cubicle 171. Seizes quietly....
then remembers that he knows how to use a computer and quietly picks himself up and figures out a way to send WIP shot to Skalk.
Wanders off in embarrassed silence.

Cheers for the heads up Skalk! Subbed the LoER thread and look forward to joining in the fun in the new year!
Well, he required it in the rules, but he didn't specify sending it with the pics - just remembered and put mine together and mailed it, but I'm sure he's not going to disqualify you if that bits late (Right Skalk????)
Thank you all for participating. I will have a list of completed participants soon.

Big thanks to Skalk! What a success already! Thanks for staying on top of this!

Some dropped off, but this is some steep, STEEP competition! I'm gonna crash and burn so hard. Pretty much everyone I feared ended up finishing, with the shocking exception of Dave. I pretty much got ONE day to work on this and now I feel like I haven't done my competition justice. Best of luck, fellas! You have probably all out done me.
Yeah, the splitting of categories was a great idea Skalk - meant no-one felt they couldn't compete, but still gave some stiff competition within each group. Don't envy you the judging....
None of this was by chance. I've watched and learned from other contests.
(Apologies to GiraffeX for the next bit as I copied my post from his thread a few days back.)
My true hope for the current and any future contest is to inspire people to build a better battlefield. A Golden Daemon winning Space Marine Caption looks amazing, but can get capped and put back in the box on the first turn. A great piece of terrain stays on the table for the entire game. Plus it adds so much to the overall atmosphere when you're not using something like this for a gaming board.
25 people completed. That's almost 1/2 the contestants that signed up. Thank you one and all. This was a lot of fun and you can be sure I'll be doing this again at least once in 2014.
Logging off for the evening. If anyone has questions PM or sent email to skalkbloodaxe@outlook.com, I'll read / reply tomorrow.
I think the lack of wips hurt. At least me anyways, I kinda forgot about it until a few folks posted their finished piles on their blogs. I was kinda to late at that point.
Always considered the terrain/scenery/battlefield to be the "third faction", it deserves attention too! Can't wait to apply some TLC to my incoming massive pile of Deadzone scenery. Perhaps even some junk will find its way onto the table
Good luck everyone.
Stiff competition at every level. I've been impressed (and occasionally scared) by the few people that did show on their blogs and I'm looking forward to seeing the rest.
Good job Skalk for a competition well run. Good luck with the judging.
man, i was sincerely hoping to see some pics of everybody's project today when i logged in...made myself busy catching up on ifalna's commission painting thread (got to pg 67 from the beginning--only 79 pages to go!) waiting for the contest to be over...although it is a consolation prize of sorts to have a list of the contestants who actually finished, so now i can go search for a contest related thread or gallery images from them...
i can hardly wait for the next contest! hope it's something awesome, like scratch building a gargant or a CRASSUS ARMOURED ASSAUlT TRANSPORT!
edit: PS: in the spirit of good sportsmanship, i should wish everyone good luck! PPS: thanks again to Skalk Bloodaxe for putting on a great contest!
Sorry you didn't make this one, but there will be more in the future.
**
I've learned a valuable lesson regarding photo submission, and I'll offer it as sound advice to anyone that ever runs a similar contest (meaning no WIP pics)- have all submissions sent to the same location. I'm bouncing all over the internet this morning. My own fault for not thinking of this at the beginning.
I'm compiling photos and will be making them available for viewing / voting as soon as I am done. I'll be choosing the photo I think reflects the most favorable view of your project and post it here (along with links to folders w/ all 6 entry photos sent to me). Be sure to check your link and folder for any errors / omissions.
Update:
I think I have just finished compiling all the entries, will go back through again to make sure I'm correct. **PLEASE** let me know if I've overlooked something.
Once I'm finished w/ checking the entries I have to upload all folders to my site and then link 27 main entry photos back here. This will take a while. Expect photos later this evening. Barring unforeseen circumstances everything should be posted and ready for Daemon Prince voting.

You can start digging through the files now. I did not set up thumbnail links as I cannot find my Dreamweaver prg (??? where did it go?) so you have URL for everything instead. If you find any error / omission please let me know.
Over the next couple hours I'll have links back to here w/ a pic fro everyone and from there the Daemon Prince voting starts. Reminder- vote via PM only.
Lurkers specifically invited since I doubt almost 8,000 hits for this thread were just the contestants.
I've found 2 folders that are empty so I'm searching for those pics, and due to size of many pics I'm going to upload them to a folder on dakka as well to standardize the sizes. I'll be done in a few hrs.
That was probably because I sent large muti-angled composite mosaic pictures.
Which coincidentally, I've just posted up in my blog (with a full explanation) and can be found in my gallery (under terrain) should that make your life easier, Skalk.
Apologies for the empty folders. Scrambling on this end to figure out what I did, and have requested assistance from the people I'm coming up short on. I'm going to post the pics I have to get as much up now and I will correct my errors as soon as possible.
Here is the list as I have it. I will be making corrections as soon as possible. If you feel I have chosen a pic that does not best represent your entry please PM me and I will upload the photo you want displayed.
DAEMON PRINCE CONTEST
Here are Daemon Prince voting rules:
- Vote for your favorite piece. It can be from any contestant from any category.
- Contestants may not vote for their own piece.
- Votes accepted by PM only, please do not post them on the thread.
-When you pm me your vote I would greatly appreciate it if you would write DAEMON PRINCE in the subject field. It will help me tally the votes more quickly and accurately.
It is encouraged to promote the Daemon Prince voting on your own threads and to share this with people that may find this interesting. The contest has been an incredible success and the work from everyone that entered deserves attention and recognition.
That's it. What an amazing collection of work! So many approaches and ideas, so many techniques and applications. This is a collection of incredible work. Everyone here has helped and inspired more people than you'll ever know. I'm one of them for sure. There are quite a few things from each category that I'll be trying on my next pieces. Thank you again one and all for your interest, participation, and contribution to this contest and to why Dakka is such a cool place.
Again, if any contestant feels the pic posted is not the best representation of their piece please PM me and I'll make whatever change you wish, including post an updated photo.
That is a fine collection of junk on display. Lots'n'lots of lovely rust tones. Impressive turn out indeed, especially when you se it all in one post like that. Bravo chaps
I have a few contenders already, but there's still a few more to come before settling down to decisions
Really beautiful stuff, and so much variety! Really impressed with the turnout. Will try to go through properly and make some decent comments after work tomorrow, but for now, really well done everyone, and so impressed with the turnout and effort!
Lookin good gang.
Lots of stiff competition out there. All the entries look great. Good luck all.
Thanks skalk for putting this on and all the effort that is going into this. I cast my vote for DP. May the best dakkaite win!
I am astounded by the level of imagination and creativity here, though I suppose I shouldn't be, everyone worked hard to put these together. So cool to see them all in one place.
I have some thoughts on a fave, but the competition is tough!
Damn some of you guys sure have impressive junk! everyone's done brilliant jobs with both creative planning and painting, I can see one or two i'm thinking will take out the comp already! love some of the effects of rust and dirt and the use of random bits has given a real test for us to play with scale etc.
Thanks Skalk for thinking a little left of centre and holding something like this! :-) I had a good time doing something a little different (which you'll all see when he gets my pic up lol!) stretched myself out of my comfort zone, not enough to take out the title I don't think as i'm too controlled with my modeling but I learnt and had a ball! and congrats to everyone else who entered! it's things like this that keeps us off the streets doing hold ups!
Thanks to all for participating. No amount of organization would have made this a good contest without your involvement.
Update- Nerdfest and hk1x1 have re-submitted their photos. If anyone wants to re-submit DP votes feel free to do so. Also, still waiting on Rabid Ferret.
Category judging has started but results will not be posted until 12/27.
I'll have the photos posted as soon as possible, NLT early evening tonight. I'll also re-post everything here so the corrections list w/ everyone else.
***
Update #2- All 'missing' photos have arrived. I'll be posting them within the next 2 hours.
***
Also, thank you for putting DAEMON PRINCE as the title of you PM votes. Has made this process very easy.
I know I am not going to win, but it was REALLY FUN to make this piece. I will take my moral victory in being the only submitter to make a junk pile in the middle of an overgrown field.
Contestants- It is encouraged that you promote the Daemon Prince voting on your own threads and to share this with people that may find this interesting. The contest has been an incredible success and the work from everyone that entered deserves attention and recognition.

OKAY. These all deserve comments, and I'm going to do my best. Sorry if they're a little brief, but there are a hell of a lot of you!
@Briancj - Very atmospheric, the static grass adds a lot. Like the hazard stripes!
@Maede - Beautiful painting, as always. The weathering on the wall is really realistic (I'd love a tutorial!), and the different rust tones really sell the piece. Especially love the weathering on the painted metal surfaces!
@Nerdfest09 - Where did you find all those tesla coils?! Really like the glow effect, and the spots of ?molten metal are really well painted. Really keen to know what that machine did before it got junked
@OneManNoodles - Great idea using the walkway for height! Lovely detailing with the pipes and wiring. I particularly enjoy the weathering on the white supports and the red panel, plus the computer is a nice touch. Very 80s, I'm not surprised they chucked it out!
@Chelnov - Really enjoyed the smiley face, though it looks sore! Great choice of bits - looks very natural as a pile of rusted wreckage. Really sold by the differing rust tones too.
@Dr. H - Such a shame that you can only see one side of this, I really like the shelter aspect round the back, and you really need to see it in 3D to appreciate that. Love your choice of bits, very eclectic and hard to identify. The ?hose is a good stripe to break up the brown, and I really like the weathering on the end of the horizontal pipe - looks very realistic for something that's been sawed through and dumped. Ace!
@hk1x1 - Really creative use of junk! I'm struggling to identify any of the parts that make him up, and they really look like they fit together as part of a whole. I feel a little bad that he's been junked! What's the story there?
I'll get through the rest either after dinner or tomorrow, but amazing job all round!
Scarper wrote: @Dr. H - Such a shame that you can only see one side of this, I really like the shelter aspect round the back, and you really need to see it in 3D to appreciate that. Thanks Scarper. There are more angles incoming (so hang in there people ).
Hose, heavy electrical cable, it can be whatever you want it to be (much like the rest of it). I wanted to show that it has weight to it by the deforming of the roll of "metal fence" (or whatever you want it to be...) and yeah, that, the shiny metal piece and the graffiti were to break up the rust.
Funny you should say about the pipe looking sawn through, as that''s what I did (together with a little pliers work) to it to get the inside out... Most of the junk was chosen due to it being damaged in one way or another and that's why they've ended up on a scrap heap.
I may do what you're doing at some point, once I've had a chance to have a good look through.
@ Scarper: Thanks, there is a picture of it on my terrain thread before it was painted, if you wanted to see all the separate parts.
There's also a little bit of back story there as well (I think)
Ok, so comments on the Lords and Exalted Champs first:
LORDS:
Brian - Absolutely loving the overgrown look, obvious when you think about it, but none of the rest of us went that route. Also keen on the beaten appeaance of the large panel in the centre. And kudos for the scavenge hunt vid too.
Meade - Been blown away by your rust before, no exception here, and the weathered concrete is superb. Your terrain certainly counts amongst the most realistic I've ever come across.
Nerd - Great concept, lovely effects on the molten metal. Nice to see a very different colour palette here compared to most of the rest of us, visually very striking.
Noodles - Another nice concept, great use of the vertical plane. And obvious kudos for the old-skool computer. Liking the use of colours here too, especially the way the green and the red get used in both the upper and lower sections.
EXALTED CHAMPS:
Chelnov - Wonderful rust work, great tonal changes in there. And great job with the smiley face, great little 'extra'.
Dr H - More great rust (I know, there's a lot of that in this review), nicely broken up with the graffiti. And the junk shelter was a nice idea.
hk1x1 - Fantastic job of bringing the disparate pieces together to look like one rusted old piece. And another interesting take on the whole idea. Will be checking out your blog to see more of this.
graven - Definitely liking yours for the story it tells. I like that the fleur helps to tie it in with your existing scenery, and just loving the price list. Some nice rust on the gears too.
Moltar - Like this for the fact that not everything is rusted up, there's still a variety of colour here, although beaten and weathered certainly. Looks like random stuff acculmulating over time, but not too long a period. Gives me a chance to say something other than 'nice rust' too.
monkeytroll - Junk
Rabid Ferret - Huge fan of the weathering on the yellow and blue pieces, beautiful stuff. Really like what you did with the pipe and the goo too.
Theo - Nice little body dump. There's a nice texture to the iron and the spring, and the body bags and the sign give it a little story.
Aspirirng Champs and Cultists I'll come back to, probably tomorrow now.
Apologies fo the brevity as Scarp said Once I've done the rest I may come back to attempt some criticisms too - just need to find some worth mentioning first......
ATTENTION- it was pointed out that I had failed to correctly post Rabid Ferret's entry. If you have already voted and want to nominate RF then you can change your vote.
Okay, let's hear it for the Aspiring Champs and Cultists:
Apiring Champs:
Andy T - More nice rust colours, some interesting bits, especially like the wire grid, good use of blue to break up the rust.
Camkierhi - Now that's a junk pile. Varied assortment of bits, nice variety of colours. Like the blue wire in the middle, stands out nicely, and good use of the zinge sprue - I've been thinking that would make a good sign outside a manufactorum for a while now. And always enjoy a zog off
daemonhunter - Love the burnt wood effect on the crate, very nice, and the blown open pipes.
hdbbstephen - Another great idea, junk pile as a nurgle shrine! Effective rusting on the drop-pod edges, and nice work on the oil drum.
jedi76 - Yet more nice rusty bits of metal, and love the two gas canisters, they look great.
Littletower - And another slightly different take on the idea. Using the fence was a great idea, a whole line of these across the table would look great. Excellent barbed wire too.
Scarp - Brilliant idea with the bus stop, fits beautifully into your world, and wonderfully executed. Big fan of the graffiti.
sennacherib - Good use of the vertical space, and some lovely corrosion on the green. Nice idea to have that gubbins extending out of the pipe, and of course the body.
weety - Great job in making the pieces look like one unit, your usual excellent paint work, and damn, you put that together fast!
Cultists:
Desubot - Love the various appliances, classic junk pile ingredients. And I thought the sink was pre-made till I checked out your blog. Nice wood effect too.
Gawdam Sumbish - More classic ingredients, cone, matress and pallet all great, big fan of the pallet particularly. Nice use of colours to break it all up too.
GrimDork - My meks would love a junk portal, fantastic idea! Great sense of junk pouring out, and like the torn up floor where it all lands. (Unless it's going the other way of course)
Llama - Great use of junk bits as always from you - just suprised not to notice a rawl-plug or two in the mix. Nice that it's a semi-organised pile rather than just randomly placed.
Snrub - Building a barricade out of junk - another nice idea that will look great on the table. Well placed touch of copper to break up the colour as well.
Phew, impressive work guys, well done to all.
Looking forward to Skalk's decisions in each category, going to be a tough choice. And nice bits of terrain for everyone's table
Hard to find criticisms on these, but I'll try and come up with something over the next few days, after all it's not the praise that helps us grow as modellers and painters.
Back on track: 9ish days left in the Daemon Prince voting! If you haven't voted yet please do, and if you know anyone that would be interested in this have them stop by. Every entry deserves more attention.
I've been putting out the word as best I can w/o spamming threads.
Ahh, but even if you decline the title, it'll still stick if people keep calling you by it I'll quick though, don't want you getting assaulted by the younguns.
Skalk Bloodaxe wrote: I declined the title. I don't need some young junkslinger rolling into town looking to make a name for himself by taking down the Junkmeister General.
Ha, not something that crossed my mind when I accepted Spruemeister... I best keep my sprue swords sharp then...
I've been putting out the word as best I can w/o spamming threads.
I should actually cast my vote considering that I've been spamming my own thread to tell people to vote.
I've been through them all and it's currently down the 3 pieces... time to make an executive decision.
Many thanks to those that have voted, and a reminder all who have not:
VOTING ENDS FRIDAY DEC 27th.
Voting will remain open all day until I post here that it has closed. Votes for all categories and Daemon Prince will be posted late Friday 27th or early / mid Saturday 28th.
I've received votes from many contestants but far less from viewers, so I'm making a direct request to everyone that reads this thread- if you have a favorite model, support the modeler with a vote. Every vote counts!
Also, another reminder to contestants- feel free to mention this contest on your thread, add link to your sig, etc. If you need the code for the sig link send me a pm and I'll send it to you. Your work deserves to be seen and your effort deserves to be recognized!
Stupid internet and it's stupid users with their stupid names... *grumble grumble*
Anyway... I've been a little distracted with flying butts lately, so I haven't been keeping on track with my guardsman. I'll give him another crack tomorrow maybe. He's all but done anyway and I'm pretty much just waiting on the base to be completed. Ignore...
Just an update to remind folks there is less than 1 week left in the Daemon Prince voting. Thank you to all that have cast a vote so far, and a request to everyone that has not voted yet to do it soon.
To cast a vote simply send me a PM and I'll add it to the tally!

Also, we just hit 10,000 views. Wow. That's a lot of activity.

Ah crap...
People this is why you shouldn't post while tired and slightly inebriated. You end up posting replies in the wrong thread...
Counting down to the end of Daemon Prince voting! It's time to get those votes in if you want to support your overall favorite entry.
Thank you to all that have voted. Results for each category and Daemon Prince will be posted Friday Dec 27th around 7 or 8PM EST. If that changes I'll update here.
an amazing amount of entries. not going to point fingers to everyone individually and say "wow, man, awesome job!" because everyone who finished a piece should feel that way, regardless of their talent level...i must say that the thing i was most glad for in this contest was the splitting up of contestants into skill levels...
it was also a -ton of fun...very much looking forward to seeing the winners, and if Camkierhi is going to start a competition of his own (as he won the LoER competition #7 not too long ago, and it is his SACRED DUTY to do so ...)
regardless of how it turns out, i just want to say to everyone--thanks for participating. it helped me quite a bit, knowing there were 25+ other people out there, making little piles of trash for their little plastic men to hide behind.
Brilliant stuff on display. This was my first contest on Dakka and I look forward to entering more. It's a great motivator to get those creative juices flowing.
Update- Dozens of Daemon Prince votes have come in, thank you everyone for voting, and there's still time for more! Just PM me and I'll add to the tally. Category voting is almost complete. All results will be posted Dec 27th in the mid-evening EST. It's a tight race for sure.
Again, thank you all for your completed projects. I can't rightly express the gratitude I have for you making this contest fun.
