So I know Nintendo's home consoles have kind of been the bastard children of the last two platform generations, but I keep looking at the lineup for the WiiU, with all the fun Mario games, Windwaker HD, and the upcoming Mario Kart 8, and I'm really considering getting one.

Do any of you own a WiiU, and if so, what do you like about the system?

Is there anything you really don't like about the system?

I appreciate any advice or recommendations!

I own one and I love it, Lack of games was bad for awhile there but its getting better now. Between the new DK country's coming out and Smash and Mario Kart I'll start to be happy. Another plus is that Nintendo like providing backwards compatibility so you also have the whole of the Wii library open to you as well. (Assuming you dont have one already)

The Gamepad when you first see it looks like it could never be comfortable but, it really is. Sits well in the hands. Only complaint is the battery life isnt the best on it. But if you have an outlet close enough its easily remedied by hooking up to its power cord.

Other than that its a good system. It is a bit lacking in the Virtual Console department compared to the 3DS but Nintendo is working on it, albeit slowly it seems.

Overall if your looking for some good games the Wii U is great. Be advised though that you will still need Wii Remotes if you dont have them already. Most I would think know that but I figure it is worth noting.

I really like my WiiU as well. I'm annoyed at how Nintendo chose to handle things, and they've pretty much backed out on their promise to really ramp up 3rd party games. But I still love it, its a really solid system and the games I own are really good. I will also suggest that ZombiU be a must have. I really enjoyed that game.

And also agree that the controllers are very comfy, the game pad is surprisingly comfortable

To be fair, that was a promise anyone should've seen through. When in the last 15 years has a nintendo console seen good 3rd party software support? Besides, they can't promise it regardless, other devs need to do that.

Cool.

I'll be honest; I don't go to Nintendo consoles for 3rd party games. I go for Mario, link, samus, Kirby, and DK :-P

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is really fun. The online was still pretty active last time I played as well.

I just reread the thread and realized you want to know what we think about the system. Oops lol. I have got the most use from it with Netflix, I like using the tablet controller to watch it, it is almost like having an iPad that way.

We have a Wii U and we like the additional interactivity that is possible through the Wii U controller., namely some of the 3 v 1 games where the one player is being chased/hides, etc.

I just recently got one and I love it!

Fair enough, you can't play all the games that are available for PS and XBox, but it's great for all the party games, and there are some really fun ones out there.
Me being a teenager, I really shouldn't enjoy playing those, but games like Nintendoland, where everyone can play at the same time, are good fun.

Don't make the mistake of playing Wii games on the WiiU, though (which is possible). The graphics aren't great at all and it's just not a nice gaming experience.

Surprisingly, the WiiU works well for 'more serious' games, too. Take for exampe CoD Ghosts. You can either use the GamePad or the Wii Remote controller for it. With the GamePad the controls are quite similar to PS and XBox, but the Wii controller allows for point control. This is awsome because you can actually aim at enemies. The graphics aren't that great obviously, but it's nothing that destroys the gaming experience.

As said by DA's Forever, you need to buy the Wii Remote Controller separately. I found that here in England it is cheaper to buy the game Wii Party U which comes with a controller than buying only the controller. So keep that in mind when buying yours, not sure if that was just a local thing or actually Nintendo's standard pricing.

Finally, the WiiU isn't very popular atm. Some might see this as a disadvantage and maybe it is one. However, this means that preowned games are very cheap which allows you to buy two or three games for the price you'd normally pay for a single one.

So all in all I can only recommend this console!
Hope this helps.

I might be wrong but I dont think one has happened yet for Wii U? Not that I can think of off the top of my head at least. If it had I'd probably own it

Take with a grain of Salt however, its very early for me right now. I may very well be wrong

EDIT: My curiousity got the better of me and I was right. None released for the Wii U as of yet. Then newest one Island Tour was for the 3DS. Forgot about that one.. Will probably pick it up

Agreed. I'd love a good Metroid game for sure. I was excited to see they will have a watch dogs on the Wiiu but sadly it's being delayed for an undisclosed amount of time. I want to play that game, and I'd like it on my WiiU, but the question now is, wait for and hope it does come out...... or just buy it on another system.... which I don't want to do.

Completely agree. I put less than an hour into Other M before I stopped playing. The only other time I've ever been so disappointed in a game was with Elder Scrolls Online

Preferably with absolutely none of the writers from Metroid Other M and has a storyline and characterization that blatantly contradicts and spites Other M at every turn.

I'm also interested in Bayonetta 2 myself.

However, these days I've outgrown consoles mostly.

Gaming on steam is cheaper, more convenient, and the PC can do far more than consoles running laughably outdated hardware while prancing around proclaiming that they're "next-gen" with a straight face.

Love my Wiiu! It really has a very nice selection for almost any category. It's the obvious king of platformers, but you can still get the big shooters, with large online play communities. It has great party games, like wii you party, or the under rated nintendo land. I still play Mass effect 3 online all the time. I also like the cheap older games you can download. I'm having a blast playing metroid fusion and advance wars.

I can't recommend the wii you enough. The graphics are better than the ps3. the ps4 and xbox certainly look better, but we're getting to the point where improvements in graphics don't make much difference now. granted I never really cared about graphics anyway, IMO graphics should just help facilitate immersion.

It gets a lot of hate online. but everyone I know who has one loves it. which is only anecdotal, but it still supports my point.

I've had people tell me when they play on my wiiu that they are surprised how comfortable the gamepad is, and if that's not your thing, the classic control is excellent, with a huge battery life.

I've never once regretted my wiiu purchase.

Agreed on both counts for the controllers. The game pad is oddly comfy, I can play for several hours strait and have yet to get cramps or stiff hand. Same with the pro controller, my god that thing is comfy, and the battery life is just stupid. I've lost the charger cable 3 times because in the time it takes to wear out, I've lost it

Been playing Wind Waker HD and Injustice gods among us lately. Wind waker is just awesome, no surprise there, and injustice is just great. I've been a fan of fighters for years, and this one just feels buttery smooth in both mechanics and game play.

Here's a fun fact for WiiU owners.

The WiiU has sold half as many units as the dreamcast did in the same time.

I really like the offscreen play, but I don't use it that often, but always appreciate this extra capability.

I absolutely loved super mario 3d land, the only problem is that when you play with 4 people, it gets much more difficult to play with just one player, still fun but not the same.
I've put hundreds of hours in mass effect 3, but i'd played the older games on my ps3, so I didn't miss the other mass effect games.
Legend of zelda hd is surprisingly good for how old that game is. I still love just wandering around and finding all the secrets they put in the game
I have been playing the virtual console games lately, super metroid, advance wars and earthbound are still classic gems that aged surprisingly well.

I haven't played donkey kong yet, but it's on my to buy list, and I've already preordered mario kart.

I've enjoyed my wiiu infinitely more than my ps3, and I love my ps3.

Super Mario 3D world is a fantastic game in just about every way imaginable: graphics, level design, etc. I've spent many many hours on it with my 8 year old and 5 year old. Looking forward to the new Mario Kart as well. I'll also be picking up Mass Effect 3 for when the kids are in bed. As far as the console itself goes, well heretofore I'd only ever played PC games. The gamepad is nice, and it's great to be able to watch netflix or youtube on it with headphones, or to play games outright on just the gamepad. Great for avoiding fights over the remote control.

I'm thinking of picking up a Wii U for the forthcoming Mario Kart 8, big fan of the previous games and looking forward to being able to play something with a bunch of mates in front of the TV.

Massive noob question, would very grateful if anyone could answer! What kind of controllers does the Wii U use for multiplayer? Obviously you have the big screen controller thingy that comes with the machine, but will I be able to use Wii or even Gamecube controllers with the game for multiplayer?

Wii Remotes and Nunchucks work, as do Classic Controllers which plug into the remotes. The Wii U has support for one Gamepad, but not GameCube controllers.

You can also use the Wii U game pad pro. It's a fantastic controller that is probably the most comfy controller I've ever held, it's battery life says 80 hours, and I wouldn't argue that, and you can use it as a blue tooth controller for emulators.

Also are you sure the Wii you can only support 1 game pad? I swear I read somewhere that it can support more, though I don't know where you could buy another

wiiu is better all around then playstation which is leap and bounds above xbox crap thing. Xbox needs

.................................................. .................................................. .............. Have it .................................................. doesn't
Internet.................................................................................................. playstation / wiiu....................................... xbox with out wasting more money in the sink hole
Adult gamers/ no frakouts .................................................. ..................... wiiu.................................................. xbox / playstation "on some games"
Fun Games for more then the basement dweller................................wiiu/ playstation .................................... xbox
Able to buy old games for good price .................................................. wiiu/ Playstation...................................... xbox
Netflix .................................................. .................................................. ......wiiu/ Playstation................................. xbox "only if you give them more money"
Touch pad for some games.................................................. ...................wiiu .......................................................playstation/xbox
Multiple screen interactive screens .................................................. .......wiiu ....................................................... Playstation/ xbox

Some of the best games I played so far

zombieu / Super mario world / and well all the wiiu marios' / Monster hunter 3 ultimate "logged in 600+ hours" / play any wii game on the consoul so no need to throw out every game you own for the wii / pikmin "think I spelt it right" / donky kong and smash bros is coming out soon aswell.

But I am a bit torn here because how much better the wiiu is. With the free internet good online interaction all around good games for gamers/family even have some kid games for dl on there shop. Can interact with some 3ds games. Plus you can watch youtube on it aswell. If you have a wife this is probly the best choice if you want to stay single or become single or be alone form the wife playstation for you and to a worse degree xbox.

People on xbox's are crazy tho.... like insane I tryed left for dead on there and we where on the way to the copter he fell I ran by and said survival of the fitist and he freaked. Like screaming like a woman and I think crying a little. Seems to happen alot on xbox plus the built in cam can be hacked apperantly and you can be watched lol.

I think it's possible to buy extra gamepads in Japan, but apparently the developers for games have been told to make them as though the console owners will only have one of them (I've been doing some research and stumbled across that titbit )

Mario Kart 8 looks fantastic so will definitely get that, and the free game download deal looks promising as well. Has anyone had any experience with the latest Mario Party, is it any good?

Yes, if people are thinking about getting a Wii U I would definitely recommend it too.

First off, if you get it before the end of June you can get a free game when you buy Mario Kart 8. Doesn't matter if you get the download version or the WEii U bundle version, or any other version. You get the game, it comes with a code that allows you to download a game for free.

In the US the games include stuff like the Wind Waker HD, or Pikmin 3 Or New Super Mario Bros U.

In Europe there's even more choice, including Monster Hunter 3.

I was considering Monster Hunter 3, but my wife says she will play Pikmin 3 with me, so I'll be playing that.

As to why I'd get a Wii U over any other console?

On top of everything that's been said.

-Right now my wife is sitting there watching TV while she plays Super Mario 3D world(which is honestly in my top 3 mario platform games ever).

-Later I'll watch a show with her and probably load up the virtual Wii console so that I can play Metroid or some other Wii game while we watch. You have to use Wii controlers, but can play on just the gamepad.

-Sometimes we have some of our students over for a dinner. I've never had a more fun co-op expierence as sitting on a couch with a group of teenage girls playing Nintendo Land. You might be surprised that it was teenage girls who wanted to play, but I have yet to find someone who doesn't like at least three of the Nintendo Land games enough to play for a few hours on an evening.

-To re-iterate. Asymmetrical multiplayer is fantastic, and really must be tried.

-If you love 'hardcore games' then use your PC. After that the only console you need is the Wii U. I got the Wii U so that I could play as many diverse games as possible. I ended up not playing my PC games anymore.

-Some of the stuff coming out on the Virtual Console is great, especially those games that can only be played on the Wii U. They really take advantage of the console's unique abilities.

I know I sound like a fanboy. I maybe am a bit, but I have to say that despite all the hatred I have been seeing the Wii U is my favourite console I've bought yet. It isn't going to have a ton of games where you can buy one you love every single month. However each time I have bought a Wii U game I have gotten a unique gaming experience. Look around at what is available and what is coming out, and you'll see a game from every genre you could want (along with a glut of platformers).

I have a party game, a platformer, a 3d platformer, a survival horror, an adventure game(like the old point and click adventures), and so on. I'm looking forward to a racing game and an RTS game.

Nice write-up bertnernie. Know what you mean about the Virtual Console, certainly looks very good on the Wii U - especially as it looks like they won't bring out SNES games on the 3DS VC..

Funny I asked about this the other day - forthcoming 4-player Gamecube controller adapter for Super Smash bros. (no news on compatibility with other games yet)

Very clever, though I'd rather an extra game on top of what I already have.

I gotta say, this is probably the best time to get a Wii U, IMO.

I'm really glad they're bringing the GC controller back, even though I had a chance to get a GC controller not long ago and passed it up. If I had one I would probably get use out of it anyway since my Wii is a GC emulator, and I could get Mario Sunshine, or some other GC rareness.

I really hope they bring those games out on the Wii U Virtual console though.

I hope they do to, Hoping to hear something about GC coming to the VC at E3, Now that it works together theres no reason not to. I'd kill to get to play sunshine again.

Yeah having Pokemon shadow coliseum on the VC would be awesome. Speaking of, here's hoping they will release a Pokemon game on the WiiU

From streams I watched it looks like a blast, Nintendo's servers seem to be a bit hit or miss at times. But once your in a race its crystal clear sailing and drop outs only seemed to happen at the lobby so no mid race disconnects.

Has anyone had a chance to try the local multi-player? I know it's playable on the Wii U pad (with analogue control), and apparently the handling experience is a lot finer than the previous Wii version, but I wonder how it plays on the old standard Wii controller or classic Wii U controller?

This is exactly what I am going to do, but the wife and I are in work crunch mode now, so we'll be getting it as a treat once we finish up work. I have heard very very good things.

I'm enjoying it. I also got Mario Kart 64 for free when I registered it (had the 250 coins saved up with that).

I've heard a lot of good things about MK8 so far. One of my friends the game is pretty unrelenting, even on 50cc.

Everyone catch the Nintendo E3 event yet? I have to say I was pleasantly surprised at their showing. Several games made me want to buy them right away
SSB looks totally awesome
The new Legend of Zelda teaser looked FANTASTIC!
Splatoon looked like a blast to play
Yoshi looked rather enjoyable as well

And..... I can't remember the rest now

Nintendo came out strong. They won this year for me. Nothing Sony or Micro has coming down the pipe grabbed me at all. Nintendo however just kept slapping me in the face over and over with things I want to throw my wallet at them for.

Also don't know if your heard, but that cinematic we got for Zelda U was created In-Engine. So hot damn take my money!!!

Yeah I heard that. I crapped myself, that is going to be such an awesome game! When I first heard "a mix of Skyrim and legend of Zelda" I said what you said TAKE MY MONEY! JUST TAKE IT!!

Also I watched a few play videos of Spatoon and it looks even more fun than before. I'm with you, Nintendo won e3 hands down. Microsoft didn't wow me with anything and PlayStation only had 1 or 2 things that made me think yeah sure. But nothing to make new want a ps4 that's for sure. I just wish Nintendo would do whatever it takes to get the 3rd party games back because they would be top dogs if that were the case. They would literally have a game for EVERYONE in the family.

Spatoon looks like a really fun take on a shooter. I hope it ends up well. Looked like a blast.

Picked up MK8 today. Online races are an absolute blast. Loving it right now. A free game cant hurt either!

How weird, I bought it yesterday as well. That and pikmen 3 (my free pick) have been good fun. I'm REALLY digging Mario Kart 8,it's add much fun to play as the advanced version. I still own that one and played it on and off since it released.

I really am loving this version of Mario Kart.

I think the one downside for me is I was expecting shortcuts every single track, and when I didn't find much at first I was disappointed. But then the more I've played the more I'm finding that quite a few tracks I thought had no shortcuts actually have one or two.

The online is great, and I've not had any lag issues so far, which is probably a first for me and online gaming.

Getting Pikmin 3 free makes MK8 the best purchase I've made in at least a year.

I think Nintendo definitely won E3 too (even though I don't normally like that kind of bro competition that goes on). PD4 looks to have an amazing game in Little Big Planet, and apart from that I just felt that I was seeing nothing of interest at all from the other companies.

I can't wait for most of those games.

Agreed, Nintendo had a strong showing at E3. I'm still rocking on Mario Kart, I've got the gold Kart and gold tires. I'm really wondering/hoping they do a similar promotion when they release smash brothers on the Wii u. Maybe not another full free game (though that would be cool) but something anyways. I was going to get Mario Kart 8 eventually but this promotion definitely pushed me to buy it.

Same I was going to wait till after Smash to get MK8, but the promotion coupled with Smash getting the push until Oct. really made me jump to it. No regrets either, Im playing the living hell out of this game

Have finally managed to overcome my reservations and have put in an order for a Wii U (the black, premium one) and got a cracking sale deal on with a copy of Mario Kart 8.

Mega excited about getting my hands on it!

Got a Wii U Pro controller on the way as well for when I start downloading SNES games..

Out of interest, has anyone seen this coming?

http://www.play-asia.com/gamecube-controller-adapter-for-wii-u-pc-usb-paOS-13-49-en-70-8h2n.html

4-player Gamecube controller adapter for Wii U - think it looks unofficial, but allows play on any game I assume (rather than the official Smash Bros one which functions specifically for that game). Think at that price might well give it a try!

That is because it is. The official one is a point of contention as Nintendo produced 4 of them than sold out instantly saying they wouldn't make anymore than later made 3 more and sold out almost instantly. Probably half the sales were resalers throwing them up on Amazon and Ebay for inflated costs.

Wow.. playing Mario Kart made me feel like a kid again! So much fun, the graphics and sound, everything is so well put together.

Really looking forward to trying out the multiplayer now!

I think at that price it's worth a try (my main concern is if it generates any kind of lag?) - can imagine the Gamecube controllers will trump the wii-motes hands down! If I get one will post my findings here.

If you have played Super Smash Bros. Melee then you know what it feels like to play smash Bros. with a GameCube controller, I'll start playing the new one once Nintendo releases more controller adapters.

This place in the UK has now got these new GC controller adapters also

I'm enquiring whether it's possible to use this on any 4-player Wii U game, or it just works with Smash Bros - would be great if you could use the GC controllers with Mario Kart!

As far as I'm aware it's just Smash Bros. that is compatible with GameCube controllers.

I enquired with Gameseek about it, just received a response.

"It states that it supports Super Smash Bros, but it wouldn’t suggest that it is specific to that game."

Well, I need to get one for Smash Bros anyway, it comes out at the end of this month so will give it a try and post my findings.

Also, while I'm here has anyone played Zombie-U? Looks pretty fun, and I've seen it for sale very cheaply in a local store.

Xenoblade chroniclesX Legend of Zelda and Splatoon.

Also I own ZombiU and personally I think it's a must have game. You'll enjoy it more if you take your time and pay it like you are really in the game. The majority of flack I hear from people seems to come when they try to COD it and run with guns blazing. The game doesn't work that way

Ah great, I have just ordered a Gamecube controller adapter (will post my findings for what that is like here) and have added ZombiU.

The Nintendo E-Shop have just added Metroid Prime Trilogy, half price at the moment - downloaded and looking forward to revisiting that game.

is it just me or is the right thumbstick almost absolutely useless for aiming? it feels sluggish and you just can't get a good prescicion hit on it. is it the game's fault?

Being playing ZombiU and .. wow, why wasn't more made of this game, it's great!

Really, really tense, the fact that the zombies can kill you with one encounter makes it so nerve-wracking, I've jumped out of my skin a few times! Love the use of the gamepad for getting stuff out of your backpack and using the map, the way you don't respawn but go into the shoes of another character, the other player zombies that turn up in the game (in fact, there is more than a ring of Dark Souls about it). Cool that it's set in London as well, which makes a nice change.

My current top score survivor is some chav teenage mum who knows her way about a cricket bat!

Have got one of these non-official 4-player adapters now, can confirm (after some time spent fiddling with it) that it doesn't work with Mario Kart :(

Hopefully the bloody thing will work with Smash Bros, otherwise it will be a waste of 12 quid!
