Hey guys, I'm also here in Irvine. What are the stores like in the area? Right now I play a rather unwieldy Feral Ork army (difficult to play in the small GW stores, and impossible to get a fast game in) It's worth it to me to go to LA if there are bigger stores/nights, but is there anything like that going on at all? Haven't really had a gaming group since I moved down here in September, and I've missed the feeling.
BTW, partial pics of my army are here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kublacon/sets/1457128/

Hey Darrian,
Thanks for the congrats! Yeah, I'll throw up a batrep in a bit or so. Allan was definitely the toughest matchup I had at the RTT, and I felt I was pretty lucky to come away with a tie.
If Johnston had won his last game and painted his Whirlwinds, the tourny would have been his.
How did you like playing against Aric? (The Necron player)
1528
Post by: Darrian13
Aric is a good player and his Necron list was hard as nails. If Aric had any experiance with facing a World Eater list like mine, he would have crushed me. I was very happy to come away with a draw.
Let me know when the Realm is having it's next RTT.

I would have had Aric if we played the last turn. Darn demons and my cursed reserve rolls. Of my 2 bloodletter squads one came on in turn 5, and the last one would have come on in turn 6 and claimed a table quarter for the win.
My downfall was I only brought a 1850 point list, and it was just stuff I randomly threw together with the bits and pieces I had semi-painted. Next time it will be war!
And spmusubi, are you a misguided league bowler?

Darrian playing at Glendale? I somehow recall you ripping mercilessly on the Glendale GW some time back. Something about too many kids?
1528
Post by: Darrian13
Here's the deal. I go there on weekdays between 11am and 2pm. That way I play a game, one that is pre-arranged, and get the hell out of the mall before the crowds get there. Thus I avoid the kiddies that you seem to like hanging around with, and taking their lunch money, and more importantly I avoid most of the adults. My nightmare is running into a client of mine while I am carrying my Sabol Army Transport case through the mall and having to explain to him/her whats in the bag.

The last time I was at the Glendale store, the manager and a redshirt were pitching the store as a babysitting service. They were encouraging a couple of mothers to drop their kids off unattended while the mothers shopped for a few hours. These kids looked to be about 6-8 years old.
Most of my purchases have been made online since then.

Post by: Darrian13
You know Arioc, luckily that manager has been fired. He was the biggest tool I have ever run into at a hobby store, and I have been going to hobby stores for 18 years. He would send his red-shirts over to troll me every time I went in there. They would walk up to me while I was looking at a blister/box and say something like "hey, what army are you building?" "that's cool, have you considered trying these models in your army, they are STRONG" "How's your painting, do you need some expert tips?" I started to feel like I was getting hit on by those red-shirted freaks so I stopped going til the manager/tool finally got fired. I hear he is managing some flowershop now.
Strangely, that manager and BigChris1313 were buddies. Maybe Chris is hanging out at the flowershop too.

First off, I have seen your paint jobs, and yes you do. Second, the guy that you are talking about (the former manager) is now managing the Northridge GW store. About the Glendale Store... When I first moved back to LA from Utah 4 years ago, the store was packed on 40k night. They had a lot of older players that were nice, and great to play. I think it was GWs policies that phased out the older gamers. Because of working at nights, I had not been to the Glendale store in a while to play. With a change in my schedule, and with the Medusa 5 events they had planned there I showed up for a couple of days. Boy was that a mistake. There was no one there over the age of 18 and I played in a mega battle where I felt like an elementary school teacher. Lucky for me they are having a 500 point RTT tomorrow where everyone buys a $10 GW gift card and the winner takes half of them. I needs some stuff, so I thought I would take some candy from some babies.

Whoa! Which manager? Jimmy, the squat Mexican ex-Marine with a shaved head and possibly glasses who was the black-shirt there at least up until Christmas? No way. We didn't get along particularly well. I once watched him tell a kid to get a mounted Saurus hero. After the manager left, I asked the kid if he had a Saurus hero on foot. He said no, so I promptly told him to return it so he could start running the Nike Saurus. I mean, what kind of a*&$*)( tells a kid without a Nike Saurus to buy a Saurus on a Cold One?
Anyway, the previous manager, whoese name escapes me, was a good guy as far as I could tell. White guy, probably 6'2". Big blonde guy with a beard. A little overweight. He played MMOs and we discussed the glory days of EQ. But he resigned probably 1.5 years ago. There were some other guys who split some blackshirt responsibilities with him (one might have been Shad?), but that was a while back.
Either way, the most current manager I know of is Jimmie, who's a dick. In a bad way. But I didn't hear he had been fired. Then again, I haven't been in there since January.
1528
Post by: Darrian13
Yeah, we are talking about "Jimmy." He is gone, Allan says he is at Northridge. I thought you and Jimmy were homies. Shad is the new manager of the Glendale store. I guess he got a demotion since he was the regional manager, at least I think so.
BTW, I will be there today at noon to play in a Medusa V game.

Jimmy is gone? Good.
I was buddies with Bradley, a big goofy-looking white guy, who hated the job and quit last summer. Ed, a young-looking Mexican dude with glasses, is a good guy who works there, and as far as I know, still does. I respect him more than anyone else who works there. I've never seen him play, but apparently has a potent Empire detatchment army. Miguel is a pale Mexican dude, a little on the short side, and a tad chubby, but last time I checked he had a pretty good looking girlfriend, who often hung out in the store. He's a good guy too. I don't know if Mike or that young guy are still there, but they're a little less notable.
Good to hear that Jimmie's gone. When I get back this weekend, I might have to go over and ask when they're getting the new Eldar codex.

Post by: Arioc
Shad was the manager encouraging the mall orphans. He seemed like a decent guy the few times I chatted with him, but the conversation I overhead disappointed me. I've worked enough time and played enough games in mall hobby stores to know that mall orphans are not the kinds of children who understand the concepts of "these are not toys", "they're very expensive" and "please don't touch".
Gamers kids usually *do* understand, but then gamers don't usually leave their kids alone in a Games Workshop all afternoon, either.

Are you going to make the RTT? make sure to stomp on Shane (he is bringing dropping IG) and Tad (i think he is running his SOB again) and all the others and say hi for me!
But if you would like to get a game in this weekend, i would deffinately be up for it, i have a league game coming up, but other than that this weekend is free for me.

What armies do the "heavy hitters" play down there?
I hear there is a godzilla nids player that is good, and a the 3 whirlwind army is tough. And then there is you with your Tau.
Come to think of it, most of the people were good who were there. Even the teenager that I played in the first round was pretty good for his age. And of course I tied you, and I would have beat Arik if we went the full 6 turns grrr.....
I think I will play demonnhunters again and give 3 people some easy wins.

Well, i dont want to give away too much info on my buddies who game there, but there is a zilla nids player who is damn good with a savage list and a very solid player, two chaos players with just brutal armies who are really really good generals (although one is bringing IG this time, the other i dont know if he will make it) and then two suberb players, one who plays speedfreaks (and kicks royal arse with them, believe it or not) and sisters, the other plays nids and mechanized tau. And darian has played Tad's sisters, Tad is a solid general himself.
Good comp and nice guys too. always fun to play at game empire.

Hey Allan, Thanks for feeding my ego, but I wouldn't classify myself in the same level of players that usually win tournaments. I was just lucky last time, that's all. Dave plays Godzilla Tyranids and AFAIK is the reigning champion over there. I've played him twice and just barely squeaked by with ties both times. He's moved on to Thousand Sons and Tau, so I dunno what he'll field. Tad plays a good Sisters list and has won with it a few times. There's an Iron Warrior 3 AV14 LasPredator player there who does well and another Biel-Tan Eldar. I'll defer to Reecius' knowledge on the player base, since I haven't been there that many times. You're a brave man to bring DaemonHunters Load up on Inquisitors and Sanctuary and completely spam any Daemonbomb armies that happen to show up! Or knowing Darrian, maybe i'll bring loads of Inquisitors/Mystics/Demolisher Cannons instead!
1528
Post by: Darrian13
"maybe i'll bring loads of Inquisitors/mystics/demolisher cannons instead!" WTF!?! Do you hate me?
Thank God none of those choices are available to your Tau list. I am giving serious consideration to playing my Black Legion instead of trying out my Marines down in San Diego. There just seems to be too much Marine hate at Game Empire.

Post by: Reecius
If you have a good list and are an intelligent general then you will be fine, but yeah, Dave Fay's bugs are rightly feared down there. He is a very good player with a nails list.
and there are plenty of assault armies, people just got tired of running them and a lot of people switched to shooty recently. But dont go expecting any easy wins simply because you have an assault army (not that you were), the good players have plenty of practice against all comers.
If Shane was running his Chaos, that would be brutal, but he doesn't play them much anymore becuase he got bored with them. That was a nasty nasty list.
The iron warrior guy has an insane list, but he often makes mistakes, cool guy though, the kind of guy you cant really get mad at him for bringing 9 obliterators and 3 heavy tanks.
I dont know if Patirck is playing but his Tau are very tough and he is a rock solid general, makes such good choices in game.
at any rate, it will be fun and i am bummed i am missing it. I am going down this weekend to play a few games with my buddies. ill let them know that the OC/LA crowd is bringing their A game =)

Reece sold you guys out and told us you were plotting against us here. It makes me happy that one of you had a hard time with our teenager. That was probably Wesley (Ultramarines). We teach 'em to build brutal lists here! I'm not sure what Tad is bringing... Due to Dave and I both bringing deep striking armies (and Darrian's daemon bomb) you can bet that there will be at least 1 Inquisitor with Mystics. Dave is using the Chosen of Ahriman (who get to teleport with Rubric Signed marine units like Necrons). It's a Chapter Approved unit which the organizer has OK'd, so be prepared. Geoff Zatkin will be playing Speed Freeks or Sisters, depending on his mood. Patrick Bracken will undoubtedly bring his Tau. He's playing bugs in our Cityfight league, so he'll need the change of long range firepower. For the record, I'm not bored with my Chaos. I'm just excited about this guard list that I just built: Imperial Guard 2000 points Doctrines Cameoline (on all squads except the last chancers) Drop Troops Special Weapon Squads Heavy Weapon Platoons Veterans HQ Command Plattoon Command Squad - 72 points -Junior Officer - BP/CCW -4 Gaurdsmen w/ Mortar & Standard Bearer Special Weapon Squad - 73 points 2x flamers, demo charge Special Weapon Squad - 73 points 2x flamers, demo charge Anti-Tank Squad - 120 points 3x lascannons Fire Support Squad - 90 points 3x heavy bolters Colonel Schaeffer's last chancers Colonel Schaeffer - 75 points Lt. And the timing of these RTT's has been crappy for my schedule, sept 1 and 2 i will be in SD saying good bye to one of my best friends who is moving to DC. I just seem to be in the wrong place at the wrong time for RTT's this summer.

I have never been impressed by the quality of opponents at the bunker at any given day.
It is best to invite some players to come down (or drive up) and meet for some games.
But we are getting into an interesting area here. We could have a dakka-dakka RTT at the bunker and have everyone who is intersted sign up and meet each other, and play for the title of the SoCal Dakkadakka champ. Perhaps blow the dust off of Yakface and get him to play.
The other thing we can do is have a day of Los Angeles vs. San Diego gaming.

Hey, that would be great! Some of the SD guys were talking about a battle between the league champs for a SoCal over all league champ, but an RTT between counties would probably be more fun and conveniant for everyone. If you guys want to organize an event I am down to help, maybe we can even schedule it on a day that i can go! (my schedule this summer stinks)
I think that would be a great idea, and the Bunker is a good spot to host it up north, lots of game room. Perhaps even make it an annual event, with bragging rights on the line, alternating between SD and LA for hosting?
Maybe I am getting ahead of myself, but i think that would be good fun, and we could post the results on the cyber cathedral and here on Dakkadakka. See who the champ is and which team comes out on top? Good fun.

the only reason i mention it is because there is so much room, with really nice tables, and it would be free. However, im sure that if we pooled our resoures, we could come up with something else if it was more agreeable to the group.

Post by: cypher
If you provide your own judges and schedule in advance the bunker can be better. Just make sure they are willing to reserve enough tables and open up early for you. Schedule way in advance and give them a statement about what to say when people call and ask what is going on. Most important, MAKE SURE YOU BRING PEOPLE TO JUDGE. Dont let the redshirts do it for you. Question. What is the "super-comp GT in November"???
1528
Post by: Darrian13
Well, the only logical judge that I am sure, no one would ever have a problem with is our very own John "Yakface" Regul. Yakface, would you do it? I have no problem playing at the Bunker. The super-comp event is the 2 day RTT in Sacramento "Capitol Punishment" The comp rules can be found in the Dakka discussions section, I think. It was roundly flamed for effectiveness. Darrian

Anyone play at the Warhouse in Long Beach? Iv been meaning to get back to my old shop and play some there.
Also I hear brookhurst hobby used to have tables, but as of last week they have a bunch of boxes where their game areas used to be... gotta find something closer to Cerritos/Anaheim I guess.

How is the bunker, BTW? I've never been. The dudes at the Block tell me it's great, but that's the usual GW crap anyway....

You know what, we should have a large, maybe tourney or game.
I run very small armies though, but that aside, I'm sure it'd be great fun.

GMI games is about 20 minutes away in Pedley. They have a lot of players (some of the best in the country) you can get pick up games friday nights pretty easily. Saturday and sunday are hit and miss, sunday is a better bet. Wednesdays can also be good for pick up games. They have about 10 tables and tons of terrain, so you can pretty much always get a game. They do huge Apoc. games (typically 5-10000 points per pesron) about 3-4 times a year and RTT's every other month. If you need to know where they are just do a search for GMI games in riverside. So.cal is also the home of the SCGWL (southern california games workshop leauge)
