It's probably CGI, so not gameplay, and unless improvised environmental weapons/attacks are a new system it doesn't show any new systems. Sub-Zero looks like a Zombie (which makes no sense, as he's a cyborg in the new timeline), but the trailer may just be "Ooh shiny!" rather than "Here's the plot!".
Either way, more MK! Here's hoping tag mode stays in.
I've never been a huge fan of fighting games, but I'll definitely keep an eye on this one. I did enjoy Injustice, and it was made by the same people...I think

Expect to see a lot of "reveals" this week though, as next is E3.
Watch dogs was also "in-engine"
Now it looks like ass.
On what system? Cause it looks pretty damn fine on my XB1.

Indeed it was...and keep an eye peeled at E3 for some more InJustice news.
For what its worth, improvised / environmental attacks are a fairly big thing in Injustice, so it isn't massively unlikely that they'd pull them through and improve on them for Mortal Kombat.
Feth me...I've been waiting for this game, and it's going to XBone and PS4...XBone, here I come. I'll buy the system when this game hits. Not before. I'm super stoked about the follow up to MK9. Less stoked about needing a new system to play it.
So yeah, E3 is where you'll find the next batch of info.
Commenting on FPS issues in relation to a fighting game has nothing to do with being a PC goon.
Fighting games need stable 60 FPS to be playable because everything is determined by input speed/lag and frame durations of moves, recoveries etc. If these are inconsistent the game is objectively bad.
H.B.M.C. wrote: You can't play your old PS3 games on your PS4 either.
From what I understand, you can play some but you basically have to "redeem" the game via the PSN store and it's a really short list of games.
Only very few games that had PS3 and launch PS4 versions. it was basically a way to let you upgrade to the PS4 version by buying the PS3 digital version and later taking a $10 fee to upgrade once you got a PS4. IIRC, the only games that used it were Battlefield 4, Black Flag and Injustice, because they were the only launch games that had PS3 releases earlier. It was open to any publisher, but the list of games that could actually take advantage of it wasn't that big.
It wasn't really about playing your PS3 games on the PS4, it was simply an upgrade system.
Playing your PS3 (or PS1, PS2, PSP or Vita) games on your PS4 is going to be handled by Now. If you have a beefy internet connection.
I think Cassie Cage will likely be my go-to if Johnny is completely out (she shares his and Sonya's move set, according to video). It's ALSO coming to XBox 360, so no need for a next gen, still. Queen Bee and Hulking Guy Throwing Child don't interest me, but Cage and Khan do. I'd also like to know how Sub Zero is human again...fatalities look crisper than before, all in all, bring it on. And the villain should be Shinnok. He's either gotta piss away the ending of the last game completely (may have already, with SZ) or go with what he already set up.
Really disappointed with Cassie Cage; Johnny Cage was my second favorite character, and it's just not the same level of doucheness if it's a chick doing the nut punch.
Here's hoping Baraka makes a comeback though. Khan looks fun as hell, though.
New Mortal Kombat? Yes, please! Bug Lady looks like fun, here's hoping my staples Ermac, Jade, and Scarlet come back. All in all, this will be a day one PS4 purchase for me! The E3 gameplay looked sick!
Slarg232 wrote: At least she's not got a case of the Man-Face that EVERY female in MK9 had.
Yep. The character models they're using now for the chicks are lightyears better than the mannish faces and cartoonishly bad breast to body proportions they had in MK9 and MK vs. DC.
Didn't they pretty much kill off almost everyone in the story of the last game?
I wonder if they'll do another reboot and everyone's alive again. Or everybody is somehow alive again by releasing their souls!
*poof* Tada! It's MAGIC!

To be fair, they killed most of the good guys off at the end of Deadly Alliance as well, only to bring them back via the power of somethingarather at the end of Deception. And Jonny Cage has died twice (Khan killed him at the start of MK3, and then he died to the Deadly Alliance in MK5).
But yeah, they might make the deaths stick this time. Sindel slaughtered basically everyone because Nightwolf used his Ancient Indian Ion Cannon to take her out, and I don't think they can just reverse that.
I'm pretty sure in the story, they'll keep Cyborg Sub-Zero. People would be rather upset (understandably) if they didn't even include regular Sub-Zero to play. And yeah, they killed off a lot of people, but they can keep the story going, with or without bringing them back!
I have a theory on Sub Zero being human again: hear me out. The first Sub Zero was a Lin Quei warrior, and this is the one Quan Chi pretended to be in order to murder Scorpion's family. When the second Sub Zero came along, he addressed the first as his brother, but they also commented that they were clan brothers, not biological. I suspect the new Sub Zero is also an ice-based member of the Lin Quei, another "brother", sent to fulfill the role of his predecessors. Either that, or he is the original that was killed by Scorpion, and his soul rejoined his body. I didn't notice a scar though, meaning it's not the same Sub Zero turned into a cyborg-that one was the "younger brother", not the original.
As long as fighting styles don't become pre-order bonus/DLC packs. WBi is very good at aping the worst practices of the other big publishers, so I wouldn't put it past them.
But yeah, Quan-Chi. Excellent. Now we just need Shinnok and they can pay off the teaser at the end of MK9.
timetowaste85 wrote: Goro is playable? Time to preorder at gamestop on Monday!! Or is it from other places?
*sigh*
Thanks for highlighting everything that is anti-consumer with the game publishing industry right now. MKX has a gated character, and will have DLC characters (probably 4-5 of them, if MK9 and Injustice are anything to go by). And that's before we get to skin packs. Supporting WBi's methods just encourages them to continue them.
Don't pre-order the game. Don't buy it on release. Wait until they release the inevitable "Komplete Edition", and get the game, plus all the extras, for less than the original retail price.
It's one of three games I'll be buying this year, and it's my absolute favorite fighter game. I don't mind splurging. I'm not one of those guys who gets the new system right away, gets games as soon as they come out, beat them, and resell them. I pick and choose, buy a lot of old games, and keep them. To date, here are the titles I bought on release:
Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2
Mortal Kombat 9
Borderlands 2
Soon joined by MKX and Borderlands: tPS. I'm not worried about spending big on what is quite literally only a handful of games.
H.B.M.C. wrote: Wait until they release the inevitable "Komplete Edition", and get the game, plus all the extras, for less than the original retail price.
I did this with Injustice. But TBH not because I wanted to FIGHT THE MAN; it was just because I got caught up in other things for a while and did not make it back to Injustice until the Everything For Thirty Bucks edition had come out. I think pre-orders, DLC, and all that is here to stay and will only get more ridiculous (Day One DLC advertised in-game and "season passes" are already well-established and just egregious). For people who refuse to participate in that, there's waiting for the inevitable Thirty Bucks edition. It's a great option but it is a part of the existing marketing structure not an alternative to it.
Compel wrote: For what its worth, improvised / environmental attacks are a fairly big thing in Injustice, so it isn't massively unlikely that they'd pull them through and improve on them for Mortal Kombat.
That is basically one of my gripes with Injustice. The game looks so damn good, and the combat can be decent at times (Though for the life of me, I can't seem to pull off any of Shazam's moves when I actually want to). But the environment is so damn annoying. While it is a new concept, the ability to spam its use through the match is tedious and annoying, especially since you can't actually block it and HAVE to jump or try to teleport and can further be punished in doing so. Plus the fact each hit can take close to a quarter of a health bar is absurd.
When I'm playing a fighting game (specifically a more traditional '2D' fighter), the environment shouldn't be such a big deciding factor in the match. I know it's super hero gimmicky and gak, but still. It's the main reason I'd rather play SF. I'd rather be punished for a mistake than be punished because my opponent uses a character who can lob every object on the map and kill me without needing to really throw a punch.

Of course! We all know fatal wounds don't matter UNLESS you're told to FINISH HIM/HER!
I don't much mind gated characters (Because those are never exclusive long enough to matter, they want their money after all.), but gated fighting styles is going to WRECK the balance of the game, and that would be a disaster.
Goro will probably be Season Pass DLC character 1; people who preorder just get him sooner. Also, I thought I read somewhere that it was Goro's son, not the man himself.

Yep, I agree. DLC characters don't bother me that much. Often times, they aren't characters that are cool enough to bait me into buying. Even Injustice didn't have any characters I wanted that badly, so I've yet to download them :( Though MK might pull some oldies but goodies on us. I'm still a little sad we haven't had a decent 3D Motaro introduced yet. The whole 'Sheeva and Goro's people cursed him to be a minotaur instead' was annoying in Armageddon :(
I will be pretty ticked if they cut out people's fighting styles for DLC purposes though. I'd be mad too if they had extras for download, because it will be just as bad as cutting out styles. Creating imbalance on purpose is terrible.
I havent played MK since the mid 90s versions but holy heebus it looks pretty good.
Some of the backgrounds and arena settings as just wow.
And the fatalities.
Thats an 18+ cert for sure

That was silly, but it was a limitation of the engine that they didn't have time to rectify. He didn't show up in MK9 either (well he did, but was taken out off screen), probably for similar reasons (too big, didn't fit with tag combat style).

Yeah...I just hope they somehow bring him back. Out of all the boss characters/big cheap characters, he was always my favorite XD HOnestly, I'll even accept another cameo...but Hell, what I'd give to have him fully playable in all his four legged glory...
I know the article says "probably", but consider the following:
1. It has a character locked behind a pay wall (Goro).
2. It has DLC (some of which will likely be day 1).
3. It has pre-order bonus stuff.
4. Warner Brothers is the biggest "me too!" publisher around, with an unyielding desire to copy every anti-consumer bit of bs Ubisoft and EA pull.
Do not pre-order this guy.
Do not buy this game at release.
Do the smart thing: Wait for the "Komplete Edition", which will include all the DLC.
I buy all of two games a year at release. If even that many. This is the first (and possibly only) of 2015. Regardless of DLC and micro transactions, I'm still getting this Day 1. Already preordered.

You do know that 1 and 3 are the same? Goro is the pre-order character but he isn't tied to any store afaik, and pre-ordering anywhere will get you Goro.
It is almost like the publisher wanted to incentive pre-ordering the game.
I also worry about the level of micro-transactions/DLC that are going to be in the game, but that one instance isn't a worry to me.
Ahtman wrote: It is almost like the publisher wanted to incentive pre-ordering the game.
We shouldn't be pre-ordering games. Period.
Yet it still happens and I'm just happy they aren't doing different characters for different vendors. As long as they are also in competition with the people that sell their games I imagine that the publisher/developers are going to continue to incentive buying it new.

Pre-order incentives exist to keep brick-and-mortar stores happy. Without them there'd be no reason to have physical copies as everything would be digital, and all the Best Buys and Gamestops in the world wouldn't be too happy with that outcome.
The gaming industry as a whole needs to do what television is doing right now (and what the movie industry still fails at doing) and wake up to the digital nature of today's consumers. All this pre-order incentives and store-specific DLC crap is a symptom of a dying method of commerce trying desperately to remain relevant.
Store specific DLC is absolute crap. I agree. But "thank you for guaranteeing you will buy a copy, have this free add-on that we will make available to anyone later who didn't guarantee a copy being sold at release", well, that's a smart incentive to preorder. What they were doing before with store specific was crap. This current method is fine.
The last time a system tried to go more digital, or all digital, people threw fits and it ended up costing market share and made the competition also scratch their plans for a more digital platform. I have no issues with digital but pretending the problem is only on the company and brick-and-mortar side is a bit disingenuous.
Ahtman wrote: The last time a system tried to go more digital, or all digital, people threw fits and it ended up costing market share and made the competition also scratch their plans for a more digital platform.
What "system"? What "last time"? Do you have specifics?
Ahtman wrote: I have no issues with digital but pretending the problem is only on the company and brick-and-mortar side is a bit disingenuous.
No it's not. It's the reason why digital prices match that of physical copies. If they charged less for digital copies (which they can do), the physical stores would pitch a fit (and often do) because they were being undercut. It's an old method of commerce getting angry that the times are passing them by. The sooner its gone, the better (and I say this as a citizen of a country with fething useless broadband speeds).
Ahtman wrote: The last time a system tried to go more digital, or all digital, people threw fits and it ended up costing market share and made the competition also scratch their plans for a more digital platform.

The X Box One was originally going to be mostly digital but fits were thrown. Sony saw the backlash and decided not to go that way, though I recall they wanted to, or had planned on, being more digital as well.
I agree with you in general, I just don't have your hatred of pre-order.
I do hate pre-order incentives, however. The point of pre-ordering is/was to basically call "dibs" on a copy of the game so that if a store sells out the game you won't get screwed into waiting however many days/weeks is needed for a new shipment of copies to arrive. That should be the beginning and the end of the "incentive" for pre-ordering a game. I have a problem with locking content out of a game that you paid 60-70 dollars for just so that they can punk people into buying it new and/or before the reviews come out and say it's gak.
Ahtman wrote: The X Box One was originally going to be mostly digital but fits were thrown. Sony saw the backlash and decided not to go that way, though I recall they wanted to, or had planned on, being more digital as well.

Not disagreeing with you, just clarifying:
People threw fits because they saw it for what it was- basically just an attempt to murder the used-game market. Game publishers have been masturbating to the idea of everyone being forced to buy a game at full price or whatever price they set for years, and it's little secret that if you buy a game used or lend a copy to your friend after you've played it, the video game industry basically hates you.
If it was just a matter of having every game being downloadable, thus giving you the choice between owning a physical copy or downloading a digital edition, then its likely no would give a gak. But what they basically wanted to do was implement DRM to prevent you from handing the copy off to a bro and denying them that sweet, sweet moolah.
Ahtman wrote: The X Box One was originally going to be mostly digital but fits were thrown.
Now who's being disingenuous?
Fits were thrown over the XBone because of the draconian way it was implementing its digital service. Always online. 24-hour check-ins. No used games. No borrowing games. Their proposals were rejected because of a laundry list of anti-consumer practices not because they were going digital. Brick and mortar chains pitched a fit over that because it would kill their used-game market, the "almost pure profit" aspect of their business model that big publishers hate.
Sony saw that and went "Nope. We don't want to be dicks to our customer base", so they didn't, so they aren't. Meanwhile Microsoft went and reversed every single bad decision made with the XBone up to and including the previously mandatory Kinect.
Ahtman wrote: I agree with you in general, I just don't have your hatred of pre-order.
I'm a PC gamer. Pre-ordering makes no sense. I want to know if the game works before I get it, and frankly, with the way things have gone this and last year (READ: Anything released by Ubisoft) is it any wonder that I'm not willing to place my faith in the big publishers?
Pre-ordering serves no purpose, pre-order trinkets and shineys aside. You are buying something sight unseen without any indication that A). it'll be any good and B). that it'll actually work. And that's before we even get into the ludicrous notion of pre-ordering digital products or... the worst of all... Season Passes. That's money down for the vague promise of content. You'd have to be a real rube to do that...
Does anyone want to talk about characters they hope to see return? Characters they don't want to see return? Or about some of the recent teases Netherrealm have given? Ermac was my most hoped for, followed by Skarlet, Jade, and Smoke. With Ermac confirmed and Jade's fighting style confirmed (sadness), and Smoke has been hinted at once or twice, I'm really hoping to see Skarlet return as a full fledged character.

Yes, I play MK9. I only really play the male characters (especially Sub-Zero) because they do not fight in gear more revealing than my underwear and high heels.
Still, I mean, Cassie Cage looks perfectly decent, so there may be hope?

How does that work when you can pre-order digital copies of games? I pre-order stuff on Steam all the time.
Mind you, I agree that store specific DLC and crap is an insanely bad idea.

I'm very, VERY interested in the plot. I'm also quite positive Shinnok will be in (probably playable) after that awesome tease of him appearing at the very end of 9.
The thing I'm probably the most interested in is whether or not Ermac is evil in this new one, as well as Kotal Kahn's alignment. Spoilers from the comics
Spoiler:
because unless something changes, Kotal is actually a (fairly) good guy, which is surprising and cool. Also, in an Ermac versus Kotal fight, in the intro Kotal says something about Ermac being his ally. Perhaps Ermac will be good? I'm excited, and wondering how long until they announce Erron Black to be playable.
He doesn't really seem to share any similarity with good old Shao however. Kotal has a Mayan theme going on, whereas Shao has always felt like he stepped out of Conan the Barbarian.
And I disagree on the "bad guy" behavior, in the comics he's been pretty diplomatic.
Edit: The interactions we've seen between him and Cassie (a confirmed good gal) have been pretty non-hostile too.
Cassie: "Hey, cool mini skirt."
Kotal: "Is that a joke at my expense?"
Cassie: "No, it's yours for free!"
Or consider the interaction between Cassie and D'vorrah (one of Kotal's two most trusted people), where Cassie says in a completely non-hostile tone "I didn't expect to see you here, D'vorrah."
...Yes, I know. I have studied this game WAY too much.
What's the bet the single player story has just as many wafer-thin excuses to have allies fight one another, like the one where Cage and Jax fight each other because of a small verbal argument.

No indications so far (apart from probably getting Shinnok), but I'm hoping for some characters from MK 4-7 to turn up in the new timeline, especially Fujin, Bo'Rai Cho and Ashrah.

Absolutely. Fujin would be interesting with the new combat system.
Ok, so Mileena is of the opinion that she should be Empress of Outworld (well she is Shao Khan's "daughter", I guess, so ok). Kotal Khan has other ideas.
And Shinnok was there, and he got sucked into that damned amulet. Always comes back to that amulet.

I'm seriously loving Cassie Cage. She's shaping up to be my favorite character.
Let's just pretend that I meant to put the Brutality one in there.
Speaking of which:
Brutalities!!!
How awesome an idea is that? Special finishing moves based upon what you end the final round with? Several per character. No inputs required. Ingenious!
Can I just say that I love the set up for this one? Each character has three distinct styles, so if you're someone who loves one particular character you have more to learn and aren't counterpicked solely by playing the character you love.
Really hoping for Kabal to be revived, but I'll settle with Ermac.
This is the first MK I've been interested in and actually pick up since probably MK III back on the PC ages ago. I have little to no idea what has transpired between IV and IX. I think it is partially because it has been long enough to get my interest and also because I played Injustice, which was fun, and this is the same group, afaik.
I like the EU (and probably NZ and Australia) CE better than the NA one: the Scorpion statue in that looks much better to me.

Basically, a bunch of stuff happened, then MK9 happened and Raiden changed the timeline.
Yeah, play MK9. It's a great game that takes you through the first three MK games but also redoes them, so you'll be completely up to date by the end.
But if you must know, short short version:
MK1 - Tournament to take over Earth. Have to win 10 in a row. Outworld has won 9. Earthrealm wins. Shao Khan unhappy. MK2 - Khan goes for a 'winner takes all' special tournament. Loses again. MK3 - Khan goes "Feth it!" and invades Earthrealm. Is defeated. MK4 - Fallen Elder God Shinnok, the ruler of the Netherrealm, tries to take over everything. Loses. MK5 - Shang Tsung (Khan's 2IC) and Quan-Chi (Shinnok's 2IC) form a 'Deadly Alliance' kill Liu Kang, and try to make themselves the ultimate power. They pretty much kill everyone and then they win! Yes, the bad guys win MK5. MK6 - Onaga, the original master of Shao Khan and original ruler of Outworld, returns. He kicks the crap out of everyone and is going to win when a dude who can mimic everyone kicks his ass. MK7 - The Elder Gods foresaw that all this Kombat was going to do terrible stuff to the realms, so set up an 'Armageddon' event to stop it all. Every kombatant fights in this, trying to get to the top of a literal ziggurat to take the ultimate power. MK8 - Didn't happen. Batman was not involved. MK9 - Shao Khan wins! He bested everyone on the way to the ziggurat, and beat Raiden in final kombat. Raiden goes "LOL!" and sends a message back in time, hoping to fix things. He does... kinda... though it goes badly.
So tempted to buy it on release (once a port report is out)... but it's a WB game, so it'll be chock full of needless DLC, and they'll release a Komplete edition anyway.
Imaskari wrote: Netherrealms Studios is a dev I happily support as Ed Boon is awesome...
Fair enough. I hadn't looked at it from that perspective. Ed Boon (and his company) is a man deserving of our money.
Imaskari wrote: ... and WB interactive entertainment isn't nearly as bad Ubisoft or EA.
Not so fast. WB are the 'me too' of the game publishing industry, wiling to try/adopt any anti-consumer practice the others do simply because everyone else is doing it.
WB has published games that are actually worth playing and don't have bad optimization though.
They actually give their devs a lot of freedom too, even ones they own.
Mortal Kombat, Injustice, and the Batman games would have been not so great if WB were as big control freaks as EA on a non Bioware game.
They are publishing for the Witcher 3 in NA as well and that was CD Projekt having total control of the dev process.
DLC and pre-order bonuses suck I agree I just don't think its going away anytime soon. I don't think that is a reason to punish good devs for some crappy behavior of the publisher.
I bet even after the terrible sales and pre-orders for Assassins Creed Unity and Farcry 4 Ubisoft will still DLC and pre order bonus even harder for their next big game.
Imaskari wrote: WB has published games that are actually worth playing and don't have bad optimization though.
Completely correct. I adore the Batman Games - Arkham City is a game I love so much I've played through it 5 times - and Injustice was tons of fun. I even broke my "no pre-order" rule for Arkham Knight, I want that game so much!
But as a publisher they are becoming worse. I mean just look at all the special editions of MKX! Goro is locked out for those that don't pre-order. It's happening, and getting slowly worse.
And wait... they're publishing Witcher 3 (another game I broke my no pre-order rule for!)? I didn't think CD Projekt Red needed a publisher? Either way, they've said Witcher 3 will have tons of DLC, all of it free, which is awesome.
Imaskari wrote: I bet even after the terrible sales and pre-orders for Assassins Creed Unity and Farcry 4 Ubisoft will still DLC and pre order bonus even harder for their next big game.
Ubisoft is the worst, with 10000 different versions of every game they release (and that's before we even get to the porting issues). I didn't buy Black Flag until it was on-sale on steam along with all its DLC was out. Got the whole lot for $30. Totally worth it.
You know, I wonder what it's like for Boon; going from doing what he loved, to basically being the only thing keeping Midway afloat, to being acquired by WB and allowed to make the MK games he wants again, rather than what the publisher needs.
He's not one of the few, but he is one of the people who have seen the industry change from people in their basements to huge megacorps.

I've not touched a Ubisoft game in ages. Splinter Cell was royally fethed by them when they stopped using Michael Ironside for the voice of Sam Fisher (that and they basically took all the fun out of it being a sneaky shoot em up). Stopped playing the Assassin's Creed at Brotherhood. Parkour assassination is fun and all but christ it gets boring.
Yes, as it's a rule that everyone should obey. I just figured there was no way I wasn't going to buy Arkham Knight/Witcher 3, so I might as well get the pre-order bonus for Batman.

I agree; when I was finally old enough to appreciate the Waiting Spy Multiplayer Game as I called it, they swapped the multiplayer part substantially.....
I really wish Mark of the Ninja had had that sort of multiplayer.....
Anyway, getting off topic. Rumor has it Liu Kang is back, and he's angry, and he's the last boss. Only a rumor, so no need for spoilers.

When the news first broke about Goro, you said I shouldn't have preordered to support this. I preordered even before Goro was announced, because I KNEW I was buying this game on release. One of three titles I'll buy on release. And you just said he same thing involving batman. Make up your damn mind, H!!

I'm always right. Even when I'm wrong I'm right because I meant to be wrong, thereby making me right by law of... umm... averages. Or something. Yeah. We'll go with that.
And it's been announced they're doing an iOS copy to coincide, same as injustice. It'll be a card collector as well, same release date, and in-app achievements will unlock stuff on console and vice versus. Sweet Googly-Moogly, my phone is getting decimated by awesome fighting games.
It's generous of them to constantly put that end section to most videos part where Goro comes out and the text tells you to hold off on buying the game until the complete version is available and on sale.
Absolutionis wrote: It's generous of them to constantly put that end section to most videos part where Goro comes out and the text tells you to hold off on buying the game until the complete version is available and on sale.
It's generous of people to not buy the game when it comes out, giving others a year long head start into figuring out strats/matchups/combos.
Goro is free with a pre-order, and will most likely be free to those who get a Season Pass. If you know your going to get it, there's no point in putting it off.
So...DLC is already two non-MK characters? I guess I can skip the season pass. Last year with Freddy it made sense to buy the pass as it would be the same cost as getting 3 or 4 characters. This time, I can get 2 for $10 for 4 that include two I don't want for $15. One guest is fine. Whatever. Two...starts getting annoying. Let's make Batman and Wolverine the next two DLCs!!
That isn't free then. It's like saying power windows are free with the $20,000 car you buy.
and will most likely be free to those who get a Season Pass.
That isn't free either.
If you know your going to get it, there's no point in putting it off.
Nah. I'm definitely going to buy the game, because I'm a massive MK fan, but I'm going to wait for the inevitable Komplete edition that has the 40 dollars of DLC thrown into the initial $60 purchase to come out first. "But people will have a head-start over you" is a non-argument because that's going to happen regardless. I'm a grown adult with a full-time job, every hyper-reflex teenager and college student is going to have three times the play-time as me within the first week after release even if I bought the game day-one.
Well there are more fighters from the other DLC pack, though I wouldn't put money on it in the hope he is one of the next four.
People are thinking it's going to be
1) Reiko (Major player in the comics)
2) Fujin (Second most requested character after Tanya)
3) Spawn (Mcfarlene had slipped that it was likely he would be in an MK game)
4) Havik, Rain, Bo Rai Cho (Those three have had roles in the comic, but minor ones)
Can we get Chameleon back? Yes, I realize he was kind of a joke character like Mokap and Meat, but think of the possibilities...Spear into uppercut, then into Noobs shadow port, Rain's around-the-world kick, into a shadow grab, ala Ermac. Yeah...me want Chameleon done right.
H.B.M.C. wrote: Guest characters are fun, but we need more actual MK characters.
The guests only make up two of twenty eight characters, which doesn't seem so bad. I just hope the trend of four characters with three alternate costumes (for other characters) carries over from the first pack to the second pack.
Ahtman wrote: The guests only make up two of twenty eight characters, which doesn't seem so bad.
I have no problem with the guest characters, but we have them now, let's have some more actual MK characters. 2 in 28 is fine. It needn't go higher though.

I imagine. I got the Injustice Gold (or Complete or whatever it is called) and I got all that included so in a year or so the same will probably happen to MKX.
So, I've been hearing sources saying Liu Kang is confirmed, although it was via the combat skin "classic" pack. Anyone else hear anything? Images? Didn't have much opportunity to surf, I'm at work.
Ugh, we need more MK discussion here. I tried going on the GameFaqs forum, and there's just a bunch of 12 year olds carrying on about how awesome more and more guest characters would be, and I kept getting attacked for wanting to keep MK for MK characters (I'm okay with one guest, but more becomes overkill).*
*I did tell one guy to shoot himself out of an airlock after he said Walking Dead was as bad of a show as Duck Dynasty and Jersey Shore.

Honestly, with how much they butchered the characters on the way from the Comic to the show....
Unless they release more info I think we are having to wait for the game to actually be released to have anything of real merit to discuss.

Even before the show came out even the creator of the comic said it would be a different experience. You already read the comic, why would you want it to be the same thing? Just read the comic again if that is all you want.

To be fair, the characters on Walking Dead show about as much intelligence as the people on those other two shows.

It's not about changing the experience, it's about what they did to the characters; Badass Tyrone became Spineless T-Dog, Carl became a bloodthirsty punk, Lori.... let's not get into Lori.
Stuff like Shane living, that's kinda cool. Stuff like characters not being who they were.... that's kinda dumb.
1. Bo Rai Cho! W00t! That's awesome. I like how they're changing history, but also not ignoring what came before.
2. I like how they're using Liu Kang and Kung Lao. I was worried that having them alive again wouldn't make sense, but as servants of Shinnok that's pretty cool.
After the last Kombat Kast, I can say my favorites are looking to go like this:
Returning: Ermac, then Shinnok (he looks incredible!), then probably Mileena, actually. I love what they've done with her in this game.
New characters, I think Erron Black has taken my "favorite new character" spot. I think D'vorah would be after, and then probably followed by Takeda. I love Kung Jin and Cassie Cage, too.
The only thing that worries me is about my favorite (Skarlet) returning. In the beginning, I was positive she'd come back. Two weeks out from release and still no sign? I'm getting worried. Oh God, it's Smash Bros 4 with Ridley all over again, except worse this time, because Skarlet was actually playable previously, as my main no less! Gah!
...I guess I'll just start a petition to get her as DLC or something. If it can work for an odd side character in the "worst MK spinoff ever", I'm sure it can work for a character fans legitimately loved last game.
I just hope that nuSmoke (whatever he calls himself in the first act) and Fujin become fully playable characters. And Reiko eventually, as the lead-in comic has made him kind of a big deal.
timetowaste85 wrote: Super happy with that outcome. Still curious about Jax's and Kitana's loyalty after their deaths
Can't say for Kitana, but Jax has gone Full Evil (at least at the start of the game). Seems that the first act is tying up the loose ends from the last one, then moving onto the main story of the war between Kotal Khan and Mileena. The dead characters - Nightwolf, Stryker, and so on - all show up at the start, all as wraiths/zombies under Quan-Chi/Shinnok's command. The exception is Scorp. I can't figure out why he'd want to work with Quan-Chi again.
Information on the GameFAQS website says you will be able to try the DLC characters in tower mode, without even purchasing them. It'll allow fence sitters to decide if they want them. Not sure if this means they're fully ready by game release (which would piss people off as "day 1 DLC") or if they're tower sections that will be released on the same day as the DLC. It likely won't help anyone who is doing the season pass, but it would help the fence sitters. And the season pass can still be purchased later as a bundle deal. I only care about Tanya and Tremor. I think Jason doesn't belong (too slow moving and methodical for MK). Predator is cool, but...not sold on multiple guests. The GameFAQs site is a pit of people asking for this and that person to come as a guest character. Is it so bad that I want purity in my MK?
First 25 minutes of storymode is available on YouTube: Jax, Sub Zero, Sindel, Smoke, Nightwolf, Stryker, Kabal and Scorpion can all be seen, still slaves of Quan Chi. So Jax is gonna make a comeback at some point, as well as Sub Zero since we've all seen them both as restored. But Jax is definitely "evil" at the start of the game (Johnny Cage starts this game too). Fujin is also prominent during this time (I'd expect him in future DLC, honestly).
Other than a new Liu Kang Fatality I don't think the new, and possibly last(?) trailer doesn't have any story spoilers. Of course I have been avoiding to much about the story so those more intimate understanding of the story may suss things out. As far as I can tall gak goes down, but I already figured that anyway.

Exchanging all your Cs for Ks makes your post 76% more Swedish.
He did not do that though. Else he would have said “Going to konquer the urge to purkhase”, which looks horrible and does not fit the Mortal Kombat scheme.

Word on the street is alot of the game's plot directly contradicts the events of the comics'.
A bunch of places in NYC and NJ have broken the street date. I'm gonna see if I can go to my local GameStop and talk them into an early copy. It is legal for them to do, as other stores breaking street date can cannibalize their sales. It's worth a shot, anyway.
"Me too! Me too!" screamed Warner Brothers, as they added micro-transactions to their full-price retail release, a game that already had Day-1 DLC and disc-locked paid DLC.
It's like they had a market research team look at all the things consumers hate and went "Yep. Let's do all of those!"
I found about the simplified fatalities for €/$ on Twitter and I was gonna post about it, but apparently H.B.M.C. beat me to it. That is so preposterous it is actually funny!
The easy fatalities sounds stupid but only stupid people would pay for that. Any real mortal kombat gamer would prefer to do the fatalities normal like they have since the first game.
Besides the fact no one is forcing anyone to get the easy fatalities DLC you can get it for free immediately through the Krypt. I was more annoyed by the "Unlock the Entire Krypt" for $19.99.
Utterly irrelevant. Micro-transactions should not be part of full-priced retail releases. Neither should disc-locked paid DLC. These anti-consumer practices are why people hate Ubi-soft, are why people voted EA the worst company in America twice, and are I consider WB to be the biggest 'Me too!' publisher out there, as they try to ape the worst practices of their bigger brothers.
OK so I got my hard copy today to avoid having to download it all on my crappy connection. Only to find Steam butting in and saying it wants 3GB downloading before I can play. Followed by a 450MB ish update after that which won't install. I can get to a load screen on practice mode before I get booted off.
As I understand it the Xbone should be set to offline mode when installing or it tries to do it all at once including the update and with everyone doing it at once it takes forever.
Well the four characters from the season pass are not available day one, and it was never said they were. Knowing you are getting Jason, Tremor, Tanya, and the Predator doesn't mean getting them at launch. As I understand it the first one will be in a week or two and then a week or so between each new character. If you preorder you immediately have access to Goro as well as the Samurai Pack reskins. Depending on whether you get the Kollecto'rs Edition or whatnot you may also have a different skin for Scorpion as well.
After the install, patches, and dlc nothing is missing that should be there.
I have no issues with those waiting, of course. I got it because some friends did and I knew one of the guys selling it so pre-ordering wasn't a big deal to me. If neither had been true I probably would have waited as well.
Ahtman wrote: Well the four characters from the season pass are not available day one, and it was never said they were. Knowing you are getting Jason, Tremor, Tanya, and the Predator doesn't mean getting them at launch.
Yeah but they're done. They're content removed from the game to later be added back for an additional fee. It's one of the most predatory things plaguing the gaming industry these days, only behind micro-transactions and disc-locked content... speaking of...
Ahtman wrote: If you preorder you immediately have access to Goro as well as the Samurai Pack reskins.
Why should I have to pre-order to get something that is clearly already part of the game, and is either on the disc and disc-locked behind a paywall (ala Capcom's Street Fighter games), or removed from the finished game so that you have to download it (ala Catwoman in Arkham City, surprise surprise another WB game!)? If I buy it in store for full price day 1 I have a character denied because I didn't pre-order it.
That's really gakky.
Ahtman wrote: After the install, patches, and dlc nothing is missing that should be there.
Other than the money you have to spend to put the content they cut from the game back in.
Skins are fine, mind you - they're things your art team can do long after the game is 'done'. Charge whatever for cosmetic stuff, that's not a problem. But actual game content? No.
Compare this to a publisher that doesn't want to rub its customers' faces in gak: CD Projekt Red. Witcher 3 is going to have tons of DLC. All of it will be free with the exception of two full expansions, one 10 hours the other 20 hours, that they're working on once the game is finished (they're not sure when they're coming out 'cause they're still not done).
Actually they aren't done. We know they are going to be in the game at some point but as far as being complete in-game assets with three fight styles each they are not.
As for everything else I don't necessarily disagree but it has sadly become the norm these days and I don't see a few people on the net keeping it from happening. We just have to pick and choose our battles. Even Batman: Arkham Knight has a pre-order "pay wall" incentive.
Eh, don't remind me. I got the physical copy for the reasons above, but also to be able to take it to friends/family (brother has a Bone as well) but entirely forgot about the stupid downloading to even be able to play it.
It is a fun game and really well crafted, but it certainly is part of the current generations dark side (DLC, installation to be able to play, hard copy vs digital, ect). They didn't invent it but it doesn't really make it any better.
That being said I won my only online match so far using my boy Goro.
So...Beat story mode. Spoilered for the ending and some character discussion!! Do not read if you care about the story!!
Spoiler:
So, they were telling the truth! The boss was a surprise! It was Diablo!! I mean, uh...Shinnok posing as Diablo. Got the two confused for a second. Honestly, I felt that ending was lackluster, but the ending after the credits was pretty decent for another setup. I was also VERY surprised that Liu Kang, Kitana and Kung Lao didn't regain their humanity: they were certainly shown to be human again in the teasers! Also, I'm glad Hanso/Scorpion is human again-it was a nice tough rescuing him from his slavery to Quan Chi.
All in all, the story wasn't quite as good as Injustice or MK9, but it was still a ton of fun and there were some pretty awesome death scenes. The in game graphics are really nice, and the video cutscene graphics are fantastic. The leather around Raiden's head LOOKS like real bloody leather.
Story I'd give an 8, being generous (MK9 and Injustice I felt fluctuated between a 9 and 9.5)
Graphics are a 9.5
Gameplay and combos are improved from MK9, and with the three new classes per character I'd give gameplay a 9
Online gets a 0 from me, as I can't even access it! It'll find matches, but won't connect to play. I'll change that rating when it works
Kharacter interactions are great, there's a TON of dialogue. For a fighting game with RPG style interactions, it's a perfect 10
DLC...too expensive and two guest characters: I give it a 4
Fatalities: 2 each, 5 brutalities, 2 Faction fatalities. Plenty of finishers: gets a 10
Any other things you want my take on, say so. Overall, I'd call it an 8.5 or 9, similar level to MK 9. MK 9 was only better with story mode.
Whilst "Make a Wish" and "Scarecrow" were two of the goriest fatalities in MK9, they've got nothing on the ones in this new game. Scorpion's face-cut one is insane.
Has anyone else beaten story on here? Or just me? It's about 6-7 hours, straight through, assuming you die a couple times. I think I died 4 or 5 times before the boss, who is MUCH easier than Shao Khan was. I died 3 times against the boss.
H.B.M.C. wrote: Whilst "Make a Wish" and "Scarecrow" were two of the goriest fatalities in MK9, they've got nothing on the ones in this new game. Scorpion's face-cut one is insane.
The two fatalities where you literally suck your enemy's entire entrails out of his own mouth is just...wow. The game certainly is the goriest game that has ever been released to this point.
I know MKX is region specific...but if anyone wants to play in the US, send me a friend request and let me know you're from Dakka. I'm on Xbox One, SN is still TimeToWaste85. And at some point I'll probably pick up Killer Instinct as well, if I have friends who play.
