Simple question, what is that gun in the game you just feel you have to have in your list and why? It could be because you like the way it looks or because of the destruction it causes, or maybe it is just your lucky gun and you just always roll in your favor with it.

Me? I love plasma. Plasma cannons, plasma guns. High risk high reward guns! Love the carnage they can cause to just about everything, including my own guys.

Assault Cannons. On termies, flyers, razors, land raiders, dreadnoughts, etc. Tons of fun, and I enjoy the thought of how they would look/feel on the battlefield

I really like plasma guns. I like the fact that they add colour to my black templars, and I like the danger involved in using them

The Heavy Bolter. It's won me more than a few games that thing

Exorcist Launcher

Heavy Wraithcannon, I'd say Wraithcannon but it a Wraithcannon, just bigger.

Honorable Mention, Heavy Burst Cannon, Burst Cannon, Psycannon.

Gauss Flayer, that six to auto-glance is just a thing of beauty when your firing at least forty shots.

In the game? Multi-melta.

In the setting? Boltpistol.

Hellgun, both for the name and for the fact that a puny human weapon makes a mockery of the oh so advanced power armor the SM use.

The Boltgun Each one is practically a piece of art and they are so fething amazing in the fluff/ RPGs.

GRAV GUNS!!!, Got over 10 in my list on bikes plus 3 grav cannon centurions with tiggy! Love them against all targets I've even immobilized dreadnought on over watch fire was hilarious and last game I got the sky fire mysterious objective inside my aegis so I parked my command squad with 4 grav guns with sky fire and an apothecary for that FNP was perfect seeing as my opponent was fielding 9 fmc in his skyblight tyranid force was a great game won 9-4 was taking down at least one fmc per turn

Deff my fave gun just sucked trying to 10 grav guns

In the game? Demolisher cannons.

In the setting? Boltguns.

Markerlight. It betters other weapons! And you cannot take any kind of save against it!

Honorable mentions:
Vulcan mega-bolter. It inspires awe and it delivers.
Thunderhammer. It's the name of the game, but on steroids!
Ion Accelerator. It's good against anything.
Smart Missile System. Nice range and punch, and you cannot hide from it!

A close competition between the multi-melta/fusion gun/inferno pistol & the Exorcist Missile Launcher. It's really hard to pass up a pipe-organ rocket gun with flur'de'lis all over it.

Plasma because of the inherent danger and to me it feels very 40K.

They are common in the fluff and kick ass.

If only Orks had a variant...

Gotta go with the Deffgun for Lootas, if only because it's funny when people ask how many shots it gets, and I say "D3."

The Vulcan Megabolter is thematically my favourite weapon for some reason. In the game, though, it's hard to say. Quite possibly the humble meltagun, if I go by the OP's "must take in every game" rule.

Boltgun. It fires little rockets that pop people like little grapes. What's not to love?

The little ninja in me has to go with the shuriken weapons, firing hundreds of sharp disks that can cut thrugh sny armour thanks to bladestorm makes the awsome idiom "death by a thousand cuts" seem very suitable.

Hnourable mentions to vortex grenades and wraithcannons for makeing holes in reality where previously there were none

My chcoise is the Plasma Blastgun, because nothing can't say "feth you" better than this. Except Cyclonic torpedo.

Shokk Attack Gun. Orks invent a portable way to transport things through the warp, they use it to launch insane snotlings inside of people. Easily the most hilarious weapon, and that it makes marines cry is a bonus.

People might hate it, but I personally love DEMOLITION CHARGES!!! Best things that allow expendable soldiers to have some impact upon nearly unkillable units within the game.

With guns it is the bolter just because everything else has got weird weapons like laser weaponry, plasma, tau pulse weapons etc.
Plus I like the weapon personally; its pretty badass.

In close combat I like power swords because you don't see many heroes with axes or hammers? Swords are just awesome and I have had great experience with them.

Fluff-wise, I think it has to be the bolter, simply because I will never forget the first time I played the Space Marine game and opened fire with one. The sound, the look and the waves or Orks turned to a bloody pulp was just too awesome!

In game, I have something of a penchant for plasma, as there's not a lot that S7 AP2 isn't good against. Need to put the hurt on a vehicle, take out some termies that cost twice your points, or make your opponent just forget the idea of having a save, go plasma.

My Eldar army only features a few guns.
Shuriken Catapults - naturally as this is the primary weapon for basic citizens.
Shuriken Pistol - sometimes a Warlock just needs to get a shot off.
Shuriken Cannon - underslung weapon of choice for Skimmers everywhere.
Scatter Laser - why shoot something once when you can shoot it again (obviously you are not actually shooting twice, just win-linking).
And finally - the Bright Lance. I've been taking Lance Spam since the start of 6th edition. I've yet to go up against any Super-Heavies, but I'm not afraid. Melta is good at close range but as soon as you leave but as soon as you are outside half-range, Lance is better.

Shuriken Cannon. It became a favourite from ancient days of 2nd Edition where the following fire rules, in combination with a Death Jester, made it the most sublime of weapons. I don't know if I'm remembering this correctly, but I'm pretty sure I used to have a Dark Reaper exarch with Fast Shot and a Shuriken Cannon and it was my favourite thing ever in the game.

Maybe the rules these days aren't the same, but I cannot help but see Shuriken Cannon as an option in an army list and have a mental reaction of: "Must Buy".

Heavy bolters. Because who the feth needs a rifle when you can shoot 100 explosive bolts with in a few seconds.
Oh, and also because heavy machine guns are dominate.

Everyone who answered anything other than the Maugetar, Shock Attack Gun or Lasgun in this thread is objectively wrong. Somehow.

Definitely the Lasgun, because it's fun to kill Daemon Princes with flashlights.

In the game: Railguns, reach out and destroy someone.

In the "fluff": Plasma anything, seems very 40k that something that kills so well also has a chance to kill the gunner.

<edit> For plain messed-up: Shokk attack gun, using something to teleport grots into targets as a weapon... only an Ork would do that.

I know it is not about melee weapons, but Chainsword/Eviscerator/Seth's Blood reaver are awesome as well!

Hvy Incinerator on a DK. Torrent and ignores cover. Fun and it wrecks.

My choice, Plasma, more presice, plasma rifle, because there is nothing more badas than shoothing little sun´s to the enemy face

I'm going to make a weird choice here, I like the sm scout shotgun. I like scout shotguns really I do, I don't field the damn things because their hopeless in an army without mobility for your scouts to abuse, but the shotguns look good.

I'm also going to pick the earlier model auto cannons. They look cool.

I grew up on Gundam Wing on toonami. Although Tyranids are my primary army (love of the Alien trilogy), I largely don't like their guns.

I do love the xv-8's burst cannons. My slowly growing Farsight force has 6 "heavyarms" xv-8's each with dual bust cannons.

Missile pods take a very close second. I do love a good Itano Circus.

I like the Shokk Attack Gun.

Lash of Despair. Whipping marines to death just tickles me.

My partner in crime loves her big shootas.

Plasmacanon!!

Meltagun. Every time. Inferno Pistol gets an honourable mention.

Lore-wise? Perdition Pistol. It's a meltagun but pistol sized! Best of both worlds!

Space Marine Missile Launcher. A rocket for all occasions.

Might cost you your HQ and his fancy pals, but you could also end up knee deep in a turbo laser crater covered in blood and glory. Or you know, it could scatter the other way and miss entirely, or vaporize those Scouts you had hidden on the ridge...

i really really love autocannons. Not only because the murder marines so well, but I also like the way they are modelled be it a IG one , a space marine one or whoever uses them.

I love autoguns and stubbers. Just because the idea of someone potentially running into battle with what could be a mega antique AK-47 makes me laugh.

For me its the plasma pistol. Extremely iconic with your HQ straight arming a pistol at someones face and pulling the trigger. Your head was there, now its not. And all for 15 points!

And then they pistol whip people with it too. in combat.

Call me a plain jane, but I have always loved the concept of the humble Bolt Pistol. the big boxy Astartes issue is great, but i'd settle for a Commisar model.

Tesla Destructor. It comes on excellent vehicles and can put out a silly number of wounds. Most of my armies come with 5 of the things on various platforms.

Battle Canon, because dropping a pie plate on orkz and nids is just plain fun. And because vanilla Lemans are cheap.

Inferno cannons, feel the burn!

Flamestorm cannons are a second. for me.

I like fire fire anything is good.

I love Plasma Guns! They can rip through chaos and who doesn't like the idea of a commisar shooting a squad of gaurdsmen and then the gun over heating... *cough commisar dies cough*

slugga. in 6th, had a lone nob with a slugga win the game for me - pulled off a precision hit on a character in a wraithguard unit, wounded him, and he failed a fortuned save. he was the only guy who was in range of their objective. the game ended immediately after.

second is shokk attack gun, I'll always remember one-shotting a tervigon on turn one with double 6's, then pulling a 49" charge off on the swarmlord turn 2. it did not end well for the mek.

for sheer offensive power though?

Grot blaster. 9/10 terminators will fluff their saves, guaranteed.

the medusa siege cannon (although extinct). so now it would fall to the animus speculum, tonnes of psykers in an army with that thing = all of the mind bullets mwahaha

Shattershard. Toughness test of removed from play no saves allowed, no wound allocation it just goes on whoever you point it at. Fun.

I don't really have favorites. I find that there are often a lot of things that I like equally, and what I would call my favorite depends on... well, whatever I'm in the mood for.

Some of my highly-enjoyed ones are:

-the Earthshaker Cannon. It's a big gun that deals a lot of damage, and it looks fantastic on the Basilisk and also as a towed artillery piece.

-the Autocannon. It's a light cannon that's useful for a lot of different things but not really great at any of them, which makes it very versatile. It also looks awesome on Imperial Guard heavy weapon teams (not a fan of the Predator turret version).

-any infantry-wielded flamethrower-type weapon. Perfect for those moments in an RP when I want to cackle like a madwoman and bring death to my enemies in a suitably gruesome fashion. (My RP character also has one that shoots cotton candy instead of fire for when I want to scare people then surprise them with a tasty treat)

-the Thunder Hammer. I didn't much like this one at first. Then I watched its weapons demonstration episode from the Space Marine game, and by the Emperor was it ever magnificent to watch.

-the Plasma Gun. I don't so much enjoy its dangerousness to its wielder, and I'd happily sacrifice a point of Strength to lose the Gets Hot! rule from it, but it's a nice-looking weapon which shoots pretty, glowing bolts of fiery death. It's nearly as versatile as an autocannon, but it has a good specialty - taking out power-armored infantry - while also being able to do some damage to light vehicles.

The humble Storm bolter, theres somethign dakka about sawing of the barrel of a bolter whom already have a short barrel and "bolt" it togheter with Another bolter, shame it dosent really do Terminators any justice.

The old lifta-droppa rules; I destroyed an entire IG armoured fist unit with that by throwing Chimeras round like balls in a coconut shy!

Shokk Attack Gun for the sheer hilarity of dragging any hapless foe within 6" of the Big Mek when I roll double 1s. One time it managed to drag in a Land Raider and its deadly occupants and practically single-handlely won me the game given that a quarter of his force was gone in one fell swoop.

Double barrelled turbo laser. For when you absolutely positively have to kill every unit on the table

This - I loved assault cannons when they were 3 Sustained Fire dice. You could get anywhere from 9 shots to the thing triple jamming and exploding in your face.

In game it's the railgun, because punching a hole through a land raider and exploding it from across the field first turn is great.

For the fluff, it would be the monolith portal (though it isn't technically a gun) because sucking up people is hilarious.

Deathstrike, rolls four, hey i target (insert random city in another country here). Or just bombard GW stores across state lines, or across the world if you want to play late at night.

Demolisher Cannon. My Vindicators have laid waste and kept enemies in a nice stress when they see 'em in the same table as the Land Raider's henchmen.

Tons of hate, when the pieplate hits the target. Barrage would make it perfect.

Punisher Cannon, Hvy 20. Love it even though it kinda sucks unless Pask uses it.

Wither it is using advanced executioner shells to home onto the heretics to manstopper rounds for when you really need to put something down.

I love storm bolters. They're my 40K version of halberds, I tend to always hit and kill with them

I love plasma guns also. They cause so much destruction.

The inferno pistol. All the charms of the meltagun I so love but packed into one deadly pistol.

Kroot Rifles, funnily enough. I've killed more infantry with the darn things than my Broadsides and Riptides combined.
