Thanks TH3FALL3n! We're working on a couple of things. Got him painting up his termigants... that should keep him busy for a while... and I've got a little side project of my own. Stay tuned!

For Thing 2 fans...

Just put up a batrep between my Mantis Warriors and Thing 2 running our house Bad Moon army. A very fun battle & a good read I think.

BA Mantis Warriors vs. Orks: 1000 pts

By way of an update... Thing 2 is slowly working on some termagants. I'm slowly working on a group of FW uber-spore mines thingies.

You should have about 30 guants per tervigon (just for spawning). Good Thing he doesn't have 2 right now. Have fun .

That may take him a while... but he's been told that I won't work on any more of his figures unless he does... so we'll see.

"Thing 2" I see it. Sorry, made the last post from my i-phone so I don't see subtle things like bold text very well on that tiny screen.

He has plenty... and doesn't need any more until he shows some initiative and starts to paint his own stuff. Same goes for his older brother.

Well, my little one built me a tankbusta for Christmas and is finally getting around to painting it all on his own. He wanted me to post his progress, so I'll put this on his blog and the other in hopes of schmoozing a few comments for him to read (he's young and uncertain... still needs lots of encouragement). I'm actually looking forward to getting this bad-boy in my force... only have one other tankhammer and someone needs to be free from shooting to release the bomb squigs!

Looks pretty damn awesome. Mantis Warrior head is definatly a good idea, need to tell those guy who's DA BOSS!

Colours are looking clean and i wish i could get a yellow that looks that good.

Also, the tankhammer kinda reminds of the staffs the droids in StarWarsIII:Revenge Of The Sith wield. But with a rokkit on top.

Wow... has it really been over 3 months since the last post?? Threadcromancy! ... or perhaps just lazyness...

I'd been doing a lot of painting for my eldest son's Necron army and I didn't want my youngest to feel bad... so a whipped out some Meiotic Spores and Spore Mines. Need to snag 6 more mines and the set will be complete. I realize they aren't the best choices... but he doesn't have any FA in his army yet so at least this gives him an option.

A Tyranid Odyssey: A boy and his bug collection @ 2012/08/08 04:21:02

Post by: Vitruvian XVII

I love those meiotic spores, so cool. He'll be stoked for sure!

A Tyranid Odyssey: A boy and his bug collection @ 2012/08/08 11:49:18

Post by: Gitsplitta

Thanks Vit! He was indeed very enthusiastic. Nice to be able to whip out a significant number of figures in very short order. Not the most militarily significant unit... but what the heck... gets him an FA slot (finally) and they are fun at the very least. Nothing like a table dotted with spore mines to give cover to the advancing horde. (and once in a while they even kill things!)

I really like the barrage balloon aspect of the Meiotic spores. Very cool. Don't know how functional they are... but to a certain degree I don't really care.

Gits, they look wicked! I love seeing Nids when they're painted in familiar almost realistic hues, the tendrils remind me of stretched out entrails with the gore washing of them showing you the skin through the fluid!

and what do you mean they're not the best choice! c'mon man, how can something so much fun floating around randomly blowing up not be good!

Little boy birthday... and with it some freshly painted Tyranids. He's wanted these painted for a long time. No idea if they're useful in 6th but like most of the units in my armies I choose them because they look cool rather than how well they fight. My son is the same way. These are technically still WIP (and frankly far from my best work) but there's only a couple of details to attend to so I thought I'd post the pics. This "scenario" was set up by Thing 2 with another toy he got for his birthday.

Raveners One...

Greeks Zero.

I'll have a slightly better unit pic when I'm finished with them.

You'll laugh. My "technique" for getting the red bellies is overspray from airbrushing the talons! Totally accidental, though I agree completely that the end result is quite good.

Thanks for the comments and support gents. Slowly getting back into the swing of painting. Expect weird little "look what tiny project I did last night" updates for a while. Some ork stuff, some nid, some necron. Once I've tidied up the innumerable loose ends I've left over the summer, I'll even pick up my marines again.

You have the 3rd edition snake like ravenors...as do I. 4th edition ravenors looked almost exactly like the most recent 5th edition plastic ones.

Yep, they all look really good together, the metal ones are just a bit smaller than the plastics and the only major design change is the addition of the chest thingie on the newer models.

I'm kind of experimenting with a new policy when I play may kids so that I can actually "play" without feeling like I'm just beating them up. Lately, I've been handicapping myself point-wise... so if we're playing 1750 points, I'll field more like 1500. That way they get a buffer of sorts and I can try and stretch my legs strategically without feeling like I'm picking on them. This also lets them play with units and builds that aren't "competitive" (not that anything I play is either) without getting their butts kicked because of it. So far, I've really enjoyed it. I like playing from behind as I have to stay really focused and sharp... remember my rules, etc. I seem to do my best thinking when I'm behind & making it up as I go along. They enjoy the games more too because they win more often.

Nice, but thing 1 is getting better so I'm guessing you'll be losing alot. Thing 2 is still young and enjoys the narritive so much more than the mechanics. Both will be giving you more challenging games as you grow in to middle+ age. wippersnappers!

Is it threadcromancy if I post to one of my own threads??

In any case, just thought I'd post. Been playing a lot of nasty Nid lists in the run up to Adepticon, so I took a long look at what figures Thing 2 had available and we've managed to come up with a decently competitive list for him at 1750. We do have some proxys but most are close (i.e. regular stealers for yarmgrls, a zoey for the Doom, etc.). We do have the figures to make the yarmgrls (however you spell that) and I've got a figure that I want to use as the Doom. So, there should be a bit of nid painting action in the forseeable future... and maybe some lop-sided battle reports to go with it.

'Till then!

Got Thing 2's birthday present done. Some quick-and-dirty nids. Proud of Thing 1 who did most of the work on the gargoyles himself.

Gargoyles - Thing 1
Hive Guard - friend who does some commission painting
Tyrant Guard - re-paint by yours truly

That should keep him out of trouble for a while. Going to continue to farm out most of his remaining nids... I'd like to put this army to bed, at least for the most part.

Looks good. You should wrangle up an army shot soon, it's been so long I kinda forget what he has these days.

A Tyranid Odyssey: A boy and his bug collection @ 2013/09/22 18:22:14

Post by: Gitsplitta

I think I'll wait a few weeks for the army shot as he'll have another couple of major pieces by then. I've decided it's time to be "done" with the Nids and Necrons... so I'll be focusing on getting those built and painted. That'll free up some much needed mental space so I can turn my attention to other matters.

Not that there won't ever be any more nids or crons... but basically the kids' armies will be set. Everything beyond that will be gravy.

I had a very good day because I successfully made jalepeno poppers on the grill for the first time... and they were spectacular.

Post by: Gitsplitta

I thought I'd post a pic of what Thing 2 got for Christmas 40k-wise, this is after all... supposed to be a chronicle of his 40k activities rather than just my painting his figures for him.

He's got a bee in his bonnet about painting up marines. I gave him an old, metal melta marine which he's been gleefully working on. I'll be honest... I can't say much about his color choices, but he likes them and as long as he's having a good time... I'll keep my hands out of it.

He wanted a devastator squad. I looked in every FLGS in the area and couldn't find one, so decided to dig through my bits and see if I couldn't put one together. After much digging, I found a good chunk of an AoBR marine squad, bits of 4 heavy weapons and something I could convert into a sergeant... oh, and an AoBR captain... which is still a great little model if not "optimized". I took out my magic kit-bashing tools and managed to cobble together the 4 heavies and the sergeant... and here's what I came up with.

You'll note that he's primed them yellow. This is an interesting choice as yellow is nowhere in his color scheme. But... when asked, "I like a challenge!" he replies. So be it.

As he works on these figures, I'll post his progress. Will be nice to have some of HIS work on this blog for a change.

Gits

Funny you should mention that 'bama. He started his first marine in an attempt to enter my Mantis Maker competition... but then went in such a wildly different direction with it that it became it's own thing.

whalemusic360 wrote:Which chapter are these for, the DE?

He hasn't picked a codex yet. He's calling them "Sea Ravens".

So, here's where he was when he finished painting the melta gunner. See all the yellow primer coming through? Most, and I mean most of that is completely invisible if you're holding the figure in your hand, so I see how it could easily be missed.

I went over it and touched it up. Didn't change his scheme at all... just cleaned up his lines, tried to re-touch the areas where the primer was showing through and re-did his wash. Here's how it turned out.

I'm not a fan of the color scheme... only because the blue he's chosen is nearly invisible against the black when it's on the tabletop. But he loves it, so who am I to judge?

I will be trying to encourage him to improve his painting skills as he goes... but very gently. As long as he enjoys the painting... I'm going to take a back seat to pushing him to perfection.

thats a really well done model! looks very good im kinda partial to the blue and black i suck at making stripes so your touch ups and his thought process made it even better.

thats really cool he tried to enter your comp.

tell him he is doing really well from me. i do enjoy seeing the boys updates...

I quite like the colour scheme. It gives a sort of dark blue at a distance but the closer you look the more detail appears. Kind of like and optical illusion.

and I like his attitude to a challenge.

Is it threadcromancy if it's your own thread??

Don't know if anyone is reading this anymore but I actually have an update. As of late, both my boys (including Thing 2 who's blog this is) and I have been playing a lot of 40k. The games have been fun and while I've been taking pictures, I never seem to get to the battle report before I've forgotten how the battle went. I do have a couple of fun shots to share though.

Raveners attack a grot armored column of kans.

Losses are heavy on both sides, but the Raveners eventually win out.

Also Thing 2 and I are in a bit of a weight loss competition. If he loses more than I do, I have to paint a single large figure or group of smaller ones for him. He won our first week, so he had me do this dakka flyrant I picked up off the net a few years back. Keep in mind I only have a week to do this start to finish (aside from doing my own projects), so the paint jobs are pretty basic.

I'm sure there will be more updates soon. Thanks for reading!

Yeah, it's something he needed. I've been trying to convince him to turn his other tyrant into a dakka flyrant but he's fixated on The Swarm Lord so no luck so far. He out-lost me again this week so you'll be seeing something new again in the next 7 days.

A Tyranid Odyssey: A boy and his bug collection @ 2015/02/09 14:20:48

If you out-lose him, does he have to paint something for you?

A Tyranid Odyssey: A boy and his bug collection @ 2015/02/09 14:27:34

Post by: Gitsplitta

Nope, he has to paint his own stuff that week.

I did try something new on this tyrant. For the first time I tried the classic tyranid triangular patterning/highlighting on the back edges of the big plates. I only did one color as opposed to the normal 2 or 3, but it wasn't as difficult as I thought so I may go back in and add at least one more color for some variation.

Good job on the 'Nid.

Yeah, those little stripes are a good way to add some texture and interest to the carapace. They're one of these things that you can put as much effort in as you want and still get a good result.

@Dr H: Thank you kind sir.

@Mad..: There's been a resurgence of 40k interest by both my boys. Nice to see. I agree, the action shots are the most fun.

Next up. FW Malanthrope... which we're probably going to use as a venomthrope as they are more useful. Looks like it's going to be a fun model to paint.

I'm glad you like it Anpu, it's still a "quick and dirty" paint-job, but I'm actually refining my technique a bit as I go. This is a definite improvement over previous incarnations of my Nid painting. I added the layer of Aard Coat to the carapace on this one to make it stand out from the rest of the body. The aard coat is still wet here, which is why you can see some cloudiness in the green.

....Bwah?

No no no. The Malanthrope is by far better point for point than two Venomthropes. More wounds, a respectable armour save, better toughness and Synapse to boot! But your choice.

Reminds me, I have to get back to painting my own....

@DSS: Well, we don't have the second edition of the Nid IA book yet, so we're limited to using it as something we have the rules for. We will definitely keep that in mind for the future though.

@Dr H: I couldn't believe it either. I did the base color and wash early in the morning, then everything else in the evening. It all worked out very nicely. It helps that I'm not trying to do a very fancy job... I have a clear set of parameters and color schemes, so I just get to it. Not dithering or fiddling involved.

Agree that the Malanthrope is better. I missed the bit where you were going to use this as a Venomthrope. Although if your not allowed to use one (FW) then venomthropes are still pretty sweet

Local friend. Does commission painting but I don't think he's got a web page or anything. He'll give it some extra attention so it can be a show-piece for the army. Right now, the challenge is figuring out how to build it and in what order. I also have to figure out how to pin everything. I've got a rather novel idea for pinning the legs and basing it. We'll see how it works. Right now I'm just filing my brains out.

Am I being blind or is there only 5 legs in the picture?

A Tyranid Odyssey: A boy and his bug collection @ 2015/04/04 16:28:17

Gits', check out Blackadder's tyranid blog. He went though how he built one of these, with pinning etc.
Link: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/30/564134.page#6600380

Gir', I believe the fifth leg there is the tail. It walks on 4 legs and has two guns.

A Tyranid Odyssey: A boy and his bug collection @ 2015/04/04 16:34:32

Post by: Gitsplitta

It comes with two gun arms and a ton of bits. Basic construction seems pretty straight-forward but the legs (which is what I'm most concerned about) don't set tightly into place, the sockets are rounded which means it would be easy to get things just katty-whumpus enough that it wouldn't sit just right. My basing plan should take nearly all the weight off of the legs without requiring extensive modification. That's the plan anyway.

I'll certainly check out Blackadder's bog. Thanks for the tip Dr H.

Aye, happy birthday to the young (ripper? gaunt? Or has he progressed to a genestealer?). Tell Gits to get that centerpiece model finished

Regarding the old Malanthrope discussion above, I have that book and can let you know the rules of it if you like Gits - it really is incredibly more amazing than a Venomthrope and since you've gone and gotten the actual model it'd be great to use it as such

I know a ton of people with early-September birthdays. Good people indeed. And let's be frank - christmas/new year's is a rather cosy time.

The lighter green works as well I think. By the way, I like that base. Is it just a flat base glued to a regular round base or is it a one-piece thing with a "step" in it?

A Tyranid Odyssey: A boy and his bug collection @ 2015/11/07 16:12:53

Post by: Gitsplitta

It's a cast base, so the step is built in.

I'm just so crude when it comes to painting tyranids, even when I try they look like hell to me. Just not my thing I guess.

One of Thing 2's Christmas presents was a fully painted Hierophaunt (sp?) bio titan. Done by a friend of mine. The "basing" consists of 3 heavy brass, square rods coming out of the body roughly to the same points where the rear legs and chest come down. I know most of you won't like this, but it's very stable and allows the titan to move across the table without completely disrupting the terrain and/or other units. Much more realistic in my opinion.

We're going to play a 2000 pt game tomorrow in order to try it out. Here's his list. Not perhaps what I would have chosen... but I picked a marine army that should give him a variety of fun targets to blow up. Here's hoping it goes well and he has fun with it.

A Tyranid Odyssey: A boy and his bug collection @ 2015/12/30 06:37:13

Nah, what you do is model up those rods as Marines or Orks or whatever shooting up at the Heiro, with their rockets or whatnot glancing inneffectually off its carapace.

Been a very long time since I've posted here. Kind of exciting news. Thing 2 (who's the "Nid-runner") built and painted his first model totally from scratch last week. I didn't push him, he just did it. He was inspired by playing in his first local tournament last weekend... and just got down and did it. I'm very proud of him. Still a few touch-ups around the face perhaps... but I'm inclined not to be picky about the details and just let him enjoy his accomplishment. I'll be getting a special resin base for him so he can match the rest of the army, which is why he's just on unadorned plastic.

Halloween army is all over the place, Necrons are weathered gold and blue. 30k dark mechanicus army will be black primarily... that'll be new and different eh?
