Every time you seem to post lately I'm just astounded again and again by how good you are! you are knocking out some seriously great paint lately and it's all a pleasure to look at! probably some of the nicest Ultras i've seen to be honest with you!
keep up with the great painting dude! I'll keep my eyes peeled for more!
I've been through all the thread even though I'm not a bif fan of imperial smurfs -sorry i had to -
anyway, consider me subscribed for your work here is astonishing.
actually you convinced. i'm going to do my own thread now..
thanks for my eyes and for the motivation you gave to me
keep up the good Work dude, you Australians are so damn good Anyway!
Hah! Australian.
NZ for life! Glad to see i've motivated you nonetheless, and cheers again Nerdfest, you've supported me for months on the blog now, love hearing from you every time
Oh and Knightley, Prototype tells me you're meeting him tomorrow at 10? I may pop in If I can get your model finished in time and see what can be done. DD
Fantastic LDP, you know next year i'm planning atrip to NZ 'cos i just love the place and i've never been there! part of my plan is to catch up with as many NZ Dakkaites as I can while i'm there, a pure Nerd holiday :-) LDP,Knightly,Jirc.... you know, the usual amazing bunch of artists
Sweeeeeet :-) I shall certainly do that, I better make sure I keep up to date with everyone's work so we can converse passionately about this beloved hobby!
Working on a black templar test model atm, going quite well. I post pics of it tomorrow and i'm fairly sure i'll be recieving the chapter upgrade tomorrow too!
What can I say, I wanted a wee cool looking dramatic squad. The box came today and I created the centerpeice. I'd been planning his pose for days and when I finally got to make him I have to say he came out near perfect. Also included is a pic of the test mini I did. Hope you enjoy, i'll probably be focusing on these guys for the next few days/weeks Tell me what you think,
TBH the stabilizers on the backpack of the UM can use a bit more blending on the highlighting, but other then that its friggin amazing! i can give no other critic except that its really well painted!
Hey guys! Long time
It's because i've been working on a THIRD blog of mine. I did a wee bit of work on the BT captain though, the reds on his straps and finished the white of the shoulder pad
The new blog is IG and the link is in my signature.
Here's a pic of a model from the new blog and the BT captain.
Enjoy!
Hey guys! Got a game with Prototype coming up on the 18th of August against the painting legend Knightley. It's a 1500 point game so Proto and I will be using 750 points each and allying against Knightley. I've prepared my list and have quite a bit to work on, so look forward to quite a few updates over the next few weeks!
What needs to be done:
A Marine with combi melta and chainsword
A sgt with BP and CS 5 Sternguard Marines - I've built them and am working on one, i've almost completed him, they're looking great, I made the sternguardeque bolters as best I can and am using Knightleys heads that he gave me for all the marines (except for the sergeant
5 man command squad
rhino (WIP)
razorback (WIP)
Here are some pics, ill get pics of other models when it comes to painting them, dont want to give Knightley too much intel
I base the white area in black, then a layer of astronomican grey. I follow it up with a very heavy badab black wash, it can be messy because then I go back over with the astronomican grey, leaving the wash showing making the grey-black line in the crevices, and that's all there is to it!
Thanks for your words Bio!
It's a much easier method of painting white, although some argue in person it's a very light grey (which it is, but it does the job ) its alot better then layers of skull white I think, especially since Astro is a foundation and is so easy to reply, but in saying that I hear the new white is supposed to be quite good, so I may have to give that a try
Im thinking you could probably add a little skull white to the very edges after the second layer of astro? Im just looking for a less time consuming way to paint white as my Star Phantoms force is growing quite rapidly lol
@Bio, yea I tried some skull white mixes etc on Knightleys marines' helmet, skip back a few pages and see what you prefer. The Star Phantoms look sweet btw!
@squigsquasher thanks a ton mate! Good to have you on board!
@Knightley NOT ALL THE INTEL IN THE WORLD CAN HELP YOU! MWAHAHAHA might even post my list up as a tease probably a bit too much though haha
Sup guys, the force is slowly coming along, should speed up in leaps and bounds though, Proto is coming over this weekend and we'll have a painting session that will be godly. You'll see the results then I suppose.
But yes got a small pic of the units i'll be using on the 18th of August against knightley with Proto at my side (He'll cover most of the anti tank)
and yes, tell me what you guys think of the work so far, and i'll catch you in the next update!
Whatup guys! Finished the first sterngaurd and I have to say they're going really well so far! I'm gunna need to speed it up a smidge though if I want to meet my deadlines. I should be alright with my paint blitz weekends with Proto. Tell me what you think! P.S the 'I' on the helmet is a representation of the veterans first company status for those who were unsure. Also I will fix the 'I' on the backpack, as it's a wee bit sloppy
It's been bugging me for a while now about your painting style, as you've improved it seemed really familiar and i couldn't put my finger on it! but today i finally realised who's style yours is very similar to :-) a guy by the name of James Karch, not sure if you can find pics but he's very good and featured in a few white dwarf mags and that's where I saw his ultramarines!
so anyway i reckon that's a pretty good compliment! :-) keep up the great work dude!
Prototype came over today and we did our first weekend painting blitz. I finished the razorback, based the command squad and worked more on one of the sternguard. Hope you enjoy it, the force is coming along nicely! Can't wait to get more done
Been following you for quite awhile now, but didn't make an account till recently, so now I must say your UM like fantastic! So much better than the standard. I've even used your extreme highlighting as a model for my own just amazing stuff. Please continue.
@bubble why it's great to have a fellow smurf lover along! Thanks for tuning in @Manbatapus Good to see you man . Thanks for your feedback and it's great to have another user along for the ride!
Evening lads, Just because I didn't update this week, doesn't mean no work was done! Preparations for the big Knightley game on the 18th are still underway! Some of you may remember this captain (I thiiiink I posted him a while ago perhaps, he was on a 40mm base) anyway, I managed to get him off the 40 and put him on a 25mm and give him a combi melta instead of the bolt pistol. So there you have it. ANOTHER CAPTAIN! (If I ever got DCMhood i'd make my rank papa captains or something along those lines because I have millions) But they're all neccessary! Been building the command squad up in bach too, just have to do the details and base them and they're done. And for any of those who saw my unnamed BA post in P&M here's a test model to try out the scheme I came up with Enjoy!
LDP
Pics below
[EDIT] A few P.S's: The splatters on the captains legs are blood splatters I painted over a small wash error where it sprayed over from one leg to the other, I'll put a wee bit of blood on him arm too to make it uniform and seem like it came from the chainsword Also, you may notice i'm using a plasma marine from a tac squad (signified by the tactical arrows strewn over his armour) this wont be a problem though, it's just because of the time constraits im using him instead of the other plasma guy I had.
how many plasma guns seriously cool though, liking the guy with the combi melta and also the plasma guy with the grey knight head. all cool keep up the good work
I usually Dislike the ultramarines. But these...Wow.
Amazing paint jobs here! Amazing conversions and such, do you have an army list for them yet? Id love to see what to expect? How do I subscribe to a thread, Because I'm going to!
Also, What are those ammo drums your sternguard veterans were armed with?
@bigfish ah my friend you are mistaken! That's the Company Champion head from the command squad sprue
@bubble yours are better in different ways!
@blood lance Good to have you on board matey! You should have subscribed already simply by leaving the comment. Look forward to more updates very soon!
@M.K Cheers friend, always good to hear from you
@Knightley That's what I try to tell Proto but he won't believe me D; He's probably right though, people will see our force and say 'wow!' then slightly notch their heads to knightley and just
yeah
no words...Good to hear from you as always Knightley! Better be ready for the 18th! Cuz we sure will >;P
Here he is! Captain Pirimis is complete. He is the only marine in my force with a red chainsword. Fluffwise the reason is basically he's used for more than 100 years and it's an old SM relic (Hence the outdated colour). Enjoy! I hope you like him as much as I did
Command Squad should be done next week!
LDP
[EDIT] Rats! That helmet mould line isn't so noticable in real life. Please don't criticise it!
Nice Cap LDP! and to make you feel better you'll be happy to know that yours is the ONLY Ultramarines blog I ever browse or am subscribed to! so you gotta be doing something right bro!
Found an awesome site that sells cheaper than GW and delivers in under a day
For NZ that's greater than a miracle! So I scooped some stuff up.
Look forward to updates on these guys after the 18th!
Hey there all! Finallllllly did the last touches on the command squad. It's a bit of a pain I didn't do it earlier to be honest, it's going to be hard to reach that deadline now, but fret not! I will persist!
Anyways, here's the squad, enjoy!
LDP
[EDIT] pardon the wierdish grass, the PVA isn't dry yet
They are going to need that medic if your running 4 of them with plasma's, very very cool though and will be great in the new edition since plasma's are ap 2 (i think)
good show
Automatically Appended Next Post: oh and they look very well painted
Hah. Astelan, I've been riding him since the beginning on that.
Leaps and bounds mate - painting has definately improved and they do look that part but my inner perfectionist is weeping at the mold lines man.
Admittedly, I don't bother with them for my 'nids....but....if you think I'm cleaning mold lines off that many 'gaunts then you got another thing coming
K guys, heres where we stand in terms of the game next weekend.
I have 6 days left in which I must:
Finish the sternguard
paint the entire rhino
paint the arms of the tac sgt (i switched the body out for an already painted one)
and if i have time left i will highlight the tac squad and scouts to bring them up to speed with my current painting ability.
What are you guys' thoughts on how i'll do? I'll update again on Friday night, and we'll see then!
Wish me luck! And post throughout the week to try to keep me motivated please
dude you have suc an awesome little task force there, everything is just up to such a high standard across everything. you need to finish it just so you can sit back and say "yeah, i did that"... (thats what it was like when i painted all my 1500 point list )
GAMES CHANGED!
With the release of 6th edition, and allowance of allies, The Ultimate Ultramarines Blog has been renamed The Ultramar - Sipho allegiance (homeworlds of the blood siphons (my made up BA successor) and the ultramarines)
That's right folks! The Blood Siphons have arrived! A successor chapter I have planned for a while now. 6th edition has allowed me to infuse the Ultramarines and Blood Siphons into 1 list and fight side by side, and from now on, that's the plan! (Although the blog will still mostly be Ultramarines).
Been planning a bit of fluff:
Sipho is the closest Space Marine planet to Ultramar, though the Ultramarines didn't pay much attention to the Blood Siphons until they assisted them in a battle against a massive chaos insurgence on a Guardsmen recruiting planet nearby.
I'll create more in future, but basically,
The Blood Siphons, clad in Dark red and Dark grey armour, with gold trimmings in areas are special. By having a ritual of Siphoning their fallen brothers blood and infusing it with their gene seed when recruiting new marines, their sanguinary priests have been able to find a way to numb the black rage. Whilst chapter members still succumb, they do not lose sanity. This means members of the Blood Siphons death company are still brutally powerful and fearless, fighting for sanguinius after seeing his visions, but they also can be controlled and respond to orders and act like other marines off the battlefield
Ultramarines and Blood Siphons OFFICIAL alliance track!
anyway,
So far with the Blood Siphons, I have a captain (or archangel in BS ranks), archangel (Nameless) you guys decide!
I plan to add some more over time to have a decent BS force, but nowhere near the size of the Ultramarines.
So that's that.
Also, you'll be glad to know that I painted everything for the game against Knightley, and what a game it was! Unfortunately, Proto and I were defeated. The game was victory points, and although Proto and I got first blood, into his deployment zone, killed his commander and killed an entire squad of his first, we lost 6-4 because Knightley held 2 priamry objectives, worth 3 points each, where each secondary objective we did was worth one, so we lost 6-4. But it was a cracking game! Knightley will post a battle report soon, so keep an eye out for that.
I got the opportunity to do (FINALLY) an army shot of everything I have painted, which I was pleased with, because it was more than I expected! (when I say painted I mean current edition of my painting ability, so models from earlier in my blog arent there because I dont consider them worthy ).
Here are the pics for you all to enjoy, one of my biggest updates I think!
Well I think ill expand the hq choices to get a chaplain and librarian and a chapter master (you know, to have the full set ) and ill probably get the dreadnoughts and a baal predator
Love it LDP! looks fantastic, you should be totally stoked with your force dude! it's all cohesive and painted to a high standard that makes having a game really come to life, especially as 6th is so 'cinematic' :-)
I can't wait to see how you do your Blood Siphons! it'll be interesting to see how you do your reds etc. and it'll give you near unlimited scope to play with as far as army lists go!
keep it up man, when I come to NZ i'll hunt you boys down and have a game eh!
Ah, Nerdfest, us NZers would be delighted to demolish your forces when you pop down for a visit! (And dont worry Knightley, the DC will be on your side this time!
Hey guys!
You should all consider yourselves lucky and grateful of my laziness! It's exam week at school, but along with studying, I painted today. I've started the first Blood Siphon model, and considering i've made all the paint schemes and methods etc as I go, AND it's the first time i've painted red on this scale, i'm extremely pleased with how it's going! I also tried a new method for gold, which works quite well.
The blood siphons, to have some coherency with the ultras, have the same basing and power weapons, and heres the problem. Just before I picked up one of my outdated models and outlined his power weapon in white, and I think it looks quite neat, so my question to you is, do I keep my PWs the same or put that white outline on all of them? (should be easy enough to get all the other PWs up to date)
Also the Blood Siphons emblem is a shield with a sword down the middle, simple quick easy (and sadly not really siphon related, but meh! I wanted something easier then that damned ultramarine symbol!)
I think keep the power weapons the same, the blue contrasts the red of the BS's armour very nicely already, which by the way, their colour scheme is great
Thanks for tuning in Marine_with_heart!
The PWs will still be blue, but it would have a white outline like in the picture, but thanks for the feedback, good to hear your views.
I like the scheme LDP! looks good and will certainly look awesome when you see a whole squad of them all done! the grey is a nice touch for a secondary colour too, something you don't see often. As for the power weapons, i like the white outline on them, it works well, perhaps a bit bluer but the same technique will look perfect!
Cheers Damo, your old Marines exemplar was a large inspiration you know
Ok that seems to be the consensus forming, people want a bluey outline on it
Ill do the other side of the axe bluey tomorrow and glaze this side see if it works
Now you're just pulling my leg! :-) my old Exemplars! inspiration! serious, really? I'm honored, especially as your painting trumps those old guys by a mile!
but i will tune in to see the power weapon experiment tomorrow night!
Hey guys, over the weekend I finished the Blood Siphon and did alot of work on my little diorama display thing. In the picture, the grass is still drying so if it looks like too much it's because the excess is still on, but it's going very well and I look forward to the finished result! Just have to finish the details
Enjoy! I'll check in later, LOTS OF UPDATES COMING IN THE NEAR FUTURE!
I also rearranged some formations in my cabinet for yall to see
It's a new easier method i've been trying recently, a mix of iyanden darksun and shining gold and then jjust pure shining gold over the top, and it works quite well
You read it right fellas! Dark Vengeance will soon be coming to the blog and taking it over for the next few weeks! In anticipation I painted up a Dark Angel and a Crimson Slaughter marine. (please ignore the poor build quality on the CSM the only CSMs i had were from yeeeeears ago). I've completed a vanilla Dark Angel and after scouring into the depths of my bits boxes/half empty sprues I found the requirements to make a robed dark angel and I will do my 2nd test. I am SO keen for Dark Vengeance!!! Who else is!?
Also I finished my Diorama and set up a little wee Ultramarines task force defending the hill, which I think is quite neat ;P
And finally I finished the base on the captain because it was bugging me that all I had to do was the base and it had been weeks since I worked on him1
So there you have it folks, today's updates. Enjoy, please drop me some comments and look forward to the many intense updates in the future! (As im still waiting on the Masters of the chapter and veteran finecasts to arrive from GW and its been a couple of weeks :I, so theyll be here any day now)
Im really keen for Dark Vengeance. I may have gotten a little carried away and ordered two starter sets. I dont even play 40k...yet. I actually really like the very Dark Green, how did you do that Deathwing tester? The Ultras are looking awesome as usual.
I can assure you guys the green isnt that dark in person, it is (in my opinion) the perfect green and ill be using it to paint my dark angels.
Oh and ill be painting the Dark Vengeance chaos warband black legion scheme, to start off a small chaos force will very slowly grow getting like 1 box every 6 months or something.
The deathwing test was simple, dheneb stone, gryphonne sepia dheneb stone. Let's just hope it looks that good on a full model DD
I'm gonna be painting mine as Black Legion as well, the long term view is to have a large black crusade army with a stand alone force of maybe 1500-2000pts of each god represented. Plus I may have an idea or two for an Abaddon conversion.
Thanks for the tip on the DW. I just picked up the White Dwarf for this month. I'm not too keen on how the eavy metal team have painted their DW but there is a pic of one of the Termis painted by Dan Harden that looks awesome. Looking forward to your updates mate.
Happy to announce that 2-3 days ago my Masters of the Chapter and Veteran MK II resin kits arrived! Dark Vengeancey spirit aside, I got to work on the ultras. I have finished the first and my personal favourite master of the chapter. Tell me what you think please!
Also did alot of work on a robed Dark Angel test model I threw together, I think it's gone well. I will be painting the chaos black legion because they're badass.
Hope to see you soon with more updates!
And Cheers Knightley!
Question: when do we start organising another game? I'd be keen to find a place that has a large board (bigger than the GW ones) and setting up like 4000 points each side and having it just be carnage, of course you guys can use my other marines from my other armies.
I'm also quite keen for a game of death on such a scale!
I wonder if we could combine boards hahaha
I think the best time for Proto and I would be after our exams which are in around 6-8 weeks time
That way I also have time to expand the force some more and prepare an effective army list to wreak horrible vengeance upon you! The Blood Siphons are now with the ultras to help beat you down
I also think that playing maybe a 3k point game on GW boards would be a good fun size
YES! I'm so pleased. So, I gathered the courage to attempt a feat I hadn't tried in years. A standard bearer. I was instantly struck by a second major threat. NMM! I tackled both of these very well with help from a guide and am so pleased with the result! (even if the laurels are a weee bit offset.) I'll finish the rest of the standard and then the marine soon. Can't wait to see how he looks! I'm going to run him in a game just because of how happy I am with him Obviously there are still touch ups to be made, I was just too excited and my back hurt from painting this all in 1 sitting LDP Pleeeeease tell me what you guys think!
Mate! I'm so glad you worked up the courage to give this a go. It's stunning! I can't wait to see you run this. Keep it up, your work is a major insipation for me to keep improving. I love it
DARK VENGEANCE (Limited edition of course!) FINALLY CAME TODAY! (well it came yesterday but I was busy from when I got it until this morning)
I've assembled it all and displayed the unpainted models in my cabinet. I'm going to paint them all and soon that cabinet will look sick!
Updates to come, stay tuned!
What's up guys! Gotta make this quick because I gotta go, but here is my work so far on the first model of DV that i'm painting, im very pleased at the moment, but it's down to you guys!
Also finished the UM banner
Well ive bin through your blog now, and you got some really nice work here. Its really fun and nice to see a fellow hobbyist work so hard on his models, and what speed!
Keep up the good work, looking froward to see more from you!
You and I think very much alike... I too just got my DV set, and plan to paint the chaos up in Black Legion colors! You pretty much already painted what I have only begun to plan, and you probably painted it better than I would have. Props!
Consider me subbed... can't wait to see how you tackle that Hellbrute. Now you have gone and inspired me, so I think I'll go paint some of my own models!
EDIT: BTW, I never seem to be able to pull off the eyes like you do. Mind giving me a quick run-down of the technique you use, or a link to a good tutorial?
:O that chaos guy
..............................
Wow, i am loving the way you have done the axe and the armour and the bone and everything else... just awesome. And that banner looks cool too
@FoxPhoenix haha yea! Black Legion rule! Gosh I feel so 40k mainstream with Ultras and Black Legion. Oh well haha
now you mention it with the eyes, I did a tutorial on my ancient blogger blog, but dont worry, the tutorial is still up to date and thats how I do them today, heres the link: http://ultramarinesblog.blogspot.co.nz/2010/11/how-to-paint-space-marine-eyes-red.html
@Bigfish Glad you like it! I initially had doubts about the red power axe being done in the same way as my blue ones but it's turned out ok, for the first black legion model i've painted for nearly more than a decade, I think he's going ok!
That pic just made me notice the U for the ultra marine symbol is not symetrical, im sure you know, but just thought i'd say. The smaller side could be made a bit more even and then it would look even more awesome
On the up to date banner? It may be the deceptive angle of the banner because it's sculpted to be flowy in the wind you know, I think it's relatively straight in real life (I hope )
Sorry I've been off dakka for a while so haven't kept up to date with your work... but that banner! WOW! Amazing! I only hope I can make mine look half as good as yours xxx
Yea i gotta say LDP, during this blog, you have improved so much.
The banner is really stunning. You got some really good freehand skills. Good colour choice, good lines, smoothe highlights, its just a very good piece, keep it up!
Sorry i've been away for so long guys, I dont even know why I was, jeez! Works been done at a steady pace, almost finished the dark vengeance tac squad (no pictures im afraid), I finished the standard bearer, did a company champion and am halfway through a 5 man assault squad. I've built a scout sniper squad, a captain / sgt and a techmarine. Next up to be painted are terminators, tac squad and captain/sgt.
Also, Proto and I had another intense game against Knightley in which legendary things happened. Stay tuned to his blog to read all about it soon!
Why thanks Tappers! I', pleased with my improvements since this blog started and im glad others are too! I can't stand looking back and my older stuff >:^P
Hey guys
Up at the bach til Wednesday, so i've been getting some quality painting done. Finished a whole scout sniper already, very pleased with the look (using my Urban Regiment IG camo for cloaks and cloth) except im yet to do the base because I dont have the materials with me.
Also i've done alot of work on Hammernator the Legend, who i'm sure if you've read Knightley's batrep, you'll agree he is worthy of the name, shrugging of a dreadknights 3 incinerator overwatch burns and 3 greatsword atacks and finishing him off in close combat BY HIMSELF, and if that's not enough, he came back to life, killed a purgation squad (With help) and bought time for my captain to escape the wrath of Draigo, stopping Knightley grabbing an extra VP. AND IF THATS NOT ENOUGH, this solo legend held off against draigo for 3 rounds of combat, and was still alive at the end of the game. So the least he deserved was a tasty bit of heraldry. The broken sword represents him killing the dreadknight and the 'VII' represents how many player turns he held Draigo off for. A bit of a boss if I do say so myself.
We lost the game, but I'm etremely pleased with Hammernators efforts.
Hey guys, Finished painting a Sgt / Captain model for me collection.
I'm using him as a sgt if I just want a basic bolter sgt and as a captain w/ auxilliary grenade launcher (hence the wee conversion that im quite pleased with ;P)
On another note, i've been completely immersed in the LOTR universe recently and im considering starting up a force when the hobbit comes out.
I pulled out my old Rohan from a while back, I have a couple minas tirith dudes ill paint too. But the question is, what would you guys rather see? Mordor (I just offer that for the ringwraiths ;P), Isenguard, Minas Tirith, Rohan or a mix of everything? (ill chuck elves and dwarves etc in the mix)
Nonetheless, i'll leave you with pics.
Enjoy!
That Dog defiantly does look blazed... Nice minis especially the Sgt / Captain. I love the Terminator Loincloth used as a cloak. I will be stealing that.
Awesome paintwork as always. *cough* Acquire a drill and drill those barrels... *cough*
been working on a tactical squad recenlt. I finished the sgt and all the marines are up to level that the one in the pic is currently at.
Hope you like it! These Finecast vets make great tac sgts!
^My weekend project this or next weekend is to construct a light box so I can get decent pictures for once. And haha, that's the first remark about me uniquely undrilled barrels to put a smile on my face
Cheerz Proto! I didnt like the new paints at first and during wip but they make the finished product make pretttty sweet. Oh and he's finecast, and finecast are awesome
Help me out guys!
I have the finecast veterans, who in my most recent list are veteran sergeants (Fluffwise red helms)
But i want them also to be 1st company vets if need be (white helm) and command squad members! (blue!!)
So you guys choose, should I do:
red helm, white and blue kneepads
white helm, red and blue kneepads
blue helm, white and red kneepads
Hey guys, over the last few days I bursted it and painted this whole tac squad. It's about time really, i've had only one for too long. Also it was a lovely day earlier today so I took my LOTR models out and took pics there to see how it looked, and on adys such as that I will take my pics from outside from now on! Tell me what you think guys. Cheers,
I have plenty of plastic, sadly not much is painted. Well alot is, just the ratios are all uneven and wierd. For example
I have some 8 captains, 3 command squads, marneus and friends, a chaplain, only 2 tactical squads, 1 painted razorback, 1 painted land raider (and another in the process), a predator 1 more tac squad (unpainted), plenty of veterans, a 5 man sternguard squad, 5 man assault squad, a vindicator, a land speeder storm, telion, scouts, sniper scouts, a techmarine, masters of the chapter, sicarius, some assault termies and 3 dreadnoughts
I think thats about it, heaps of stuff I know, but heaps of stuff I need to finish!!
Hey guys! This is one of my favourite models and i'm proud to say that I feel as if I've done it justice. So pleased with how this helmet came out, I was worried about it for a while, but now i'm happy. Tell me what you guys think!
C&C MUCH apreciated!
Seeing these words typed through the fingers of Knightley...I am truly honoured! Thanks! Oh and we've got to get another game in sometime soon. My exams are over next week and Protos finish in around a month or something :|
glad you like it Bio! Did I do your suggestion justice?
Cheers bubble! Good to hear from you again Oh and Veteran Sergeant I was so insanely psyched out when I saw Veteran Sergeant comment on my Veteran Sergeant update. I just thought it was cool
Sadly, my own project has been on indefinite hold since like June or July. Heck, I even finally boxed up all the supplies simply because there was no point in them sitting out. :(
Keep up the good work though. I do like the pose on the bald guy. I may have to my own interpretation of it if I ever dust off the knives and plastic card again, lol.
Greetings all! I constructed this model here yesterday, and I love him. So pleased with how he's turned out. He's constructed from many different kits and materials (kudos for naming them all) and i'm going to try and make some fluff about him. All I have so far is that he is Lt Colonel Grimbold (named after the Rohan captain mentioned in the LOTR novels) and he serves basically as Marneus / the chapter masters personal bodyguard / advisor in the 1st company (marked on his helm).
Here's where he's at so far:
I present Lt. Col. Grimbold, Hand and Advisor of the Chapter Master. He is my Latest piece He is without a doubt in my opinion the best model i've painted yet. I'd really love to know what you guys think of him. Please drop me some replies! Hope you like him! Battle report to come on Sunday the 9th, so look forward to some more awesomeness! Check in with you guys later,
Crisp!...... LDP, that's the only way I can describe it! so nicely done dude! and the subtle highlighting on the cloak is spot on! really good man well done!
Thanks Nerdfest, hearing feedback from you is always very much welcome, glad you like it!
and Bigfish, it's because he's badass ok, what other reason is needed?
Sup Guys! Been a while.
I figured. Hey, I have alot of Captains! (Yeah no $h!t) but not many/any CHAPTER MASTERS! Hey hey! Cant have enough HQs if you ask me. So I present Master Arcadius, Lord Commander of Ultramar. I made him out of spare parts I have lying around. Im going to shave that mold line off the head before I proceed with the painting further and Im giving him a gold body like the commanders in DoW to see how this looks, pleased so far. Also what do you guys think about the helmet plume? Im pleased myself, it's sicarius' plume but I cut the bottom connector off and rotated it to follow the vent on Arcadius' helm. I'm still not toooo sure about the arms, but I think they're final, atleast the lightning claw arm is.
Tell me what you think, i'll have another update in no time!
Great to see an update on these guys LDP, this guys looking really good so far especially the gold but I have to be honest the LC really isnt doing it for me. Maybe if you cut it at the elbow and twisted it slightly into a little more of an open hand pose it would fit the flow of the model better at the moment it just isnt sitting right. This is obviously just my opinion though.
You're right. I've switched the wargear around to reflect the items i'd personally take if I were a space marine and I think you'll be quite satisfied with how he looks now update soon
Ah my loyal Biohazard. I swear you're the only one who checks out my blog anymore hahaha. Glad you like the change! I certainly approve, you were right saying the LC was wrong. Can't wait to get him finished
Hi Loving your work so far can't wait to see more love the new chapter master now al you need is some fulf fro him he cant be the 1st ([primarce) amd cannt be the current one i beclve 88? (clager) . possabily fisrt time back on dakka for months!!! Btw blog has had update…. http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/810/357188.page
I'm not too keen on the gold chest plate (it seems a little too OTT for my tastes) but the rest of he model seems to be looking good. I'm liking the alternate crest too.
@Greeeat to see you back HAZZERRRR
@Legion i'm calling it now it'll look good at the end I can see where you're coming from but it's looking more and more in place as more of the model is completed
Jeez, over 7 months since I posted on this blog...here's some third company marines I've been working on to be allies for the IG i'm working on over at their blog
Looking good Lips! I really love that blue you got goin' on! any chance of a little recipe for how you get it so clean? :-) the banner is pretty damn epic too!
Fantastic update, only minor crit I may have is the power sword on the standing dude, I'd maybe go for a red or possibly green to break up the wall of blue. Awesome work regardless buddy
@Nerdfest heyy man! Been a while. My blue painting method consists of a macragge blue base, followed by a drakenhof nightshade wash. I then highlight with altdorf guard blue and the extremely with a 50/50ish mix of altdorf guard blue and space wolves grey to finish. Sometimes I glaze certain areas with guilliman blue but not often. Hope this helps!
@Biohazard Yea the main paintjob is from a while back but that's a good call. I've changed the shoulder colour and basing style on the 3rd company and I think I should change power weapon colour. Im thinking green, but red would be cool but is very hard to paint well in a lightning style.
@Phrixus Mate! Thanks for that comment man, made my day! You've inspired me Gunna get some stuff done. Makes me happy knowing people enjoy some of the stuff here! Poach at will, friend!
Yo yo! Attention is being redirected back to my Ultramarines for two reasons: - The 9 month hiatus has gone on 9 months too long - NEW SPACE MARINES COMING!!!!
So, I painted up a test model for my revised ultramarine scheme. He will serve as sergeant of my sternguard squad. Revisions include: - A new power weapon colour: Green, to break up the model's composition - A new method for painting white: Adeptus battlegrey, Codex grey and space wolves grey replacing astronomican. - A new grass colour, because I think it looks better - New methods of painting metallics - Attempted thinner highlights - An extra layer of Macragge blue over the wash leaving only the recesses showing to try and improve cleanliness - A blue glaze over all the armour to blend it better
Hope you like him! Please drop some comments telling me what you guys think! More to come soon, keen as for the new SM release!!
Green Power weapon - Ace work, it may look a little contrasting if the over all green was lighter?
White Helm - Looking like a cool white, opposed to the warm white I get on my whites, It suits your model very well
Highlights on the Armor - Very very good, the washes and glazes really blend the highlights amazingly.
A word of warning however, changing the way you base can lead to a schism when you put all your guys together, I would vote keeping the bases the same across the army.
It's great to see this blog back in action, and the new scheme looks great, especially the power weapon. Green is not a colour you usually see, but really works here with the blue. These Ultras have been a great inspiration for my own, so keep it up. Great Work!
Quick question, have you used the Army Painter ultramarines blue before LDP? I just bought a batch to revisit my marines with and it seems way to light.
I like the deeper blue of your marines. Quick tutorial / colour guide?
@Gunboat diplomat welcome mate! Glad to have you along for the ride! Gunna be updating as soon as possible
@Knightley Thanks man! I share similar concerns, but I mean, it's only the grass tufts that are changing, and it's a sacrifice i'm willing to make to improve the look of any new marines I pump out
@Paradigm Great to hear from you again man! Yea I think the green works relatively well, it was the only colour that worked with the same style I used to do my blue power weapons with
@Phrixus I'd be happy to lend a hand man. Never used the primer before no, my method for blue is as follows:
-Macragge blue base
-Drakenhof Nightshade wash
-Macragge blue again, leaving recesses free
-Altford guard blue highlight for 1st layer
-between 35/65 and 50/50ish mix space wolves grey/altdorf guard blue for 2nd fine highlight
-Glaze of Guilliman blue to bring everything together
I might grab a macragge blue and do some testing. I was hoping I could speed the process up with the Ultramarines Blue spray from AP but clearly it isn't the colour I was hoping.
The gamer says "What are you doing taking the special ammo bolter away from a sternguard!"
Close up pictures make some of the highlights look a little distinct/chalky on the helmet, where you can see the transitions of the greys. At arms length, I'm sure it would be undetectable. Better then I could do.
Just found this thread, and i like it! With the new SM book dropping into the world within the next week, i've been toying with the idea for a Ultramarines army. This is definately springing some inspiration and motivation for me.
The picture on pg27 of Lt. Col. Grimbold is incredible. I love it. I have so much adoration for that pic
Definately sticking around to see what comes off the painting table next
Nice to see just a shot of the blue, it's actually very helpful for seeing just how and where you put the highlights.
Can't wait to see what you do with the new Marines, especially the sternguard. Are the tacs going to be 2nd or 3rd company?
@Nevelon: If you want just that one guy, keep an eye on ebay, the veteran boxes show up as individual models quite a bit. They might become a tad more expensive now the box is OOP, but you should be able to get one fairly cheap.
@Nevelon yea this models a great one, practically the only one before now to actually be aiming his bolter @Paradigm yea its a interesting stage in the painting. This specific model is kind of annoying actually as you may notice there's nothing between the elbow and wrist and elbow and shoulder to highlight so they sort of form dark areas :(
Also, definately 2nd company. Returning to the classics So keen for the new models aye!
Hey guys!
He's finished, the second miscellanious veteran.
Each day is one day closer to the new SM release and I am so excited!
Tell me what you think of the vet guys, updates soon.
@Paradigm Thanks for the lovely comments as always man. The shoulder pad has a sculpted aquila-esque thing on it that I painted silver
@Nevelon hahaha yea man you dont know how excited I am to build up NEW, unique marines after all these years. Hopefully I can get some nice poses out of em Already have a few ideas
@Develain Thanks man, hearing that from such an established painter as yourself really boosts my self esteem. Thanks for the input!!
Hey guys. Just some filler whilst im away from home
Got these beauties from Empressminis.co.uk? (I think) and I have to say theyre brilliant. Small, intricate. More detailed then some of gw's stuff! And it's accurate. I have 16 rangers and 4 delta force troops. All the soldiers are unique, and great. Most have M4s or M16s, some have Machine Guns, one has an m14 and some of the delta forces have SCAR-Ls. It's awesome because they all have their own unique attatchments and stuff, it's great!
So yea, some eye candy for y'all till I get back.
Hey guys!
I know that once again it's not Ultramarine related but this is all I can really work on til the new SMs arrive. Which should be within the next 2 days (I hope)
Finished the trial US Marine. Pretty quick and fun. I like em! Got a scale shot in there too.
Those are pretty slick, and I like the paint job. Even if that camo pattern had been abandoned long before either his harness or the optic on that M4 came into service.
You might get a 2003 Iraq invasion Marine who had been issued an ACOG and still wearing 3 color desert (underneath those awful woodland MOPP suits), but the chocolate chip helmet cover would have been long gone. Also, black boots would have been a no-no. Marines still had black boots during the Mogadishu peacekeeping mission, but his harness and weapon are clearly contemporary (and would be a flat coyote brown, not black). The neck piece is actually also part of the armor, not a uniform collar.
I like it though. Just helping you out because your guy seems to be stuck in about three different eras, lol.
Hahaha yea I based the scheme on the uniforms from Black Hawk Down, which I know was in the early 90s, so that's where i've gone wrong. Not the best in terms of military knowledge. I just know about wars etc :\
Sorry for the long wait guys, my new SM actually came a few days ago, but I couldn't update until now, but work has been done!
I present you pics of my wiptac sgt and some sternguard I built.
Hope you like! The unhelmeted sgt is being entered in NF09's painting comp
Nice... A bit of advice: make the pupil bigger so it almost touches the top and bottom. It help prevents the wide-eyed drugged out look. You could also add a splash of color for the iris if you are feeling adventurous.
Nice work on the sternguard, you have got some really cool poses there. The sarge in particular is nicely balanced with the PF and the pistol outstretched.
Great work on the head of that tac sergeant, very good skin tone and variation.
Still love this thread, I haven't ben around for a while and you've been busy in my absence LDP. Great looking stuff on the new models cant wait to see them all finished.
Hey guys!
Finished my first new SM, i'm quite happy with how he looks considering (not sure if you noticed) that almost noone in this blog has a bare head (I fail to see the logic/helmets are cooler), but seeing as nerdfests competition was raging I figured it was about time an unhelmetted lad came along
Tell me what you think guys! Sternguard sgt up next
Looks sharp. He has a very intense look. When you can see whites all around the eye, you normally get into crazy eye territory. This guy just conveys a lot of built up hate. "I know I can spit acid, but right now I want laser eyes; I hate you that much"
Not a big fan of bare heads myself, but they do break up the army and add a distinct element to characters.
Hey team.
Been chugging in hours already to this guy. Sorry the updates are coming so slow, it takes me around 5-15 hours to paint a single mini (depending on detail, and excluding tactical marines), and as I improve, my newer techniques take longer to do etc etc
excuses aside, here's where i'm at, and it's going ok so far.
Excellent work, your painting really gives the effect of highly polished armour. I say it with every mini you show but this has to be your best work yet.
Coming along nicely, and I must say, the 5-15 hours spent on each model is certainly worth it. Out of interest, how long do you spend on tactical marines?
Thanks for the feedback fellas! Means alot.
Paradigm i'd say about 3 hours per if I do them individually, or maybe 2-2.5 per if I batch paint (which I should really do more often)
Thanks for all the lovely feedback guys! Sorry I couldn't individually respond, but it's very late and i'm very tired and have stayed up just to finish this guy off, and i'm relatively pleased with how he came out.
Starting on a vanguard marine next.
Freakin' fantastic, that's what I think! Here's some criticism I hope you don't mind
- I feel that gravity gun is a perfect opportunity for some OSL. The gun is very dark so some green OSL would really pop and look darn good. IMHO the OSL only really works on dark surfaces.
- The Red eye lenses. I think that with a red helmet, a red lense just doesn't pop. It looks great sure, but no "popping" makes me sad I would paint them a different color when the marine in question has a red helmet.
I feel it's the only critics I have and are minor ones, the marine looks gorgeous!
Nevelon wrote: The only thing I'm not 100% wowed with is the red trim on the tabard. I think keeping it just a single color might have been a better choice.
But that's just going out of my way to find something to nit-pick. Love the mini. Great job.
Just found this log this evening and its been a great read! Lipsdapips oh ultras are looking great, the last two particularly impressive. Though I agree, helmets are the go, the face you pointed or nerdfest comp is really good.
Hey lipsdapips, very nice Ultras. I really like the text written right onto the armour, and am going to use that for my own guys. Looking forward to more to come.
YO!
Thanks for all your constructive feedbacks guys. I see that some people arent fans of the red tabard lining, but i'm sorry to say, I need to keep coherency with other models and personally I prefer the red lining as I feel it makes the cloth more regal and thick. Sorry guys.
ANYWAY
Vanguard vet 1 is in progress! Just finished the white on the helmet and his laurels, really happy with the results! Tell me what you think and i'm sure i'll be blitzing more progress out of this guy because i'm enjoying the painting experience
