Thanks very much guys!
sorry for the delay but i have been working on my mechanicus..just slower than planned as life has a tendency to get in the way.
in any case, celebration day here - i finally finished my mechanicus bot and tech smith unit! its a rare thing for me to finish an actual unit so i'm pretty happy.
i have to say i really enjoyed painting these models. i know the bots arent to everyones taste but i really got the retro vibe. as ive mentioned before i tried to be a bit more adventurous with the shading, given the larger spaces on the bots.
in any case, i hope you guys like them. as always keen to hear comments (and votes!).
many thanks for reading!

Greetings all!
well, i have decided to take a big step and try my hand at something other than GW models. mostly just to keep things fresh and to learn some new things.
i had a look around and i thought i would try my hand at malifaux - they seem to have a lot of character, and the aesthetic is totally different to 40/30k. least to my eye goblin hillbilly cowboys? whats not to love?
so anyways, my box of malifuax "The Kin" arrived on thursday. gorgeous models, im very happy to say. but they are tiny! for anyone that hasnt seen them in person, this pic should give you an idea. the scale to the right is in millimeters. time for new brushes i think
so anyways, got started on Ophelia today. so far i've done the skin and blocked in the shirt and shorts. to me these models are very fun so i've tried to strike a fairly bright skin tone, with more subtle use of reds and purples..
as a long time Space Marine painter, it will be a challenge to paint all the cloth on these models. but...thats what i wanted, right...

Post by: Thraxas Of Turai
I think those are my favourite painted Castellan Robots that I have seen thus far, brilliant work. The visor effect is especially good, brings to mind a heart monitor screen.
Congratulations on the Malifaux purchases. They are brilliant, characterful minis and sometimes a pain to put together (separate feet, jaws and sometimes fingers(!?!). Great start on Ophelia as well.
46466
Post by: San76
Thanks thraxas, you are very kind mate!
To be honest...yes ...the malifaux models are a bit of a pain. I think strangest decision was to make the face a separate piece to the rest of the head. I've tried to use green stuff to prevent it looking like she's had some fairly dramatic surgery....but we shall see how successful it's been
78187
Post by: Thraxas Of Turai
I forgot separate faces, that can create some odd issues. The initial cry of Malifaux players for tiny pieces was " By Yan Lo's beard" but many more difficult pieces have been produced since then. I recall a particularly tumultuous experience when gluing a separate leg onto a zombie chihuahua.
From those pictures is does not look like you have had any issues with the face. Good luck with the cloth.
46466
Post by: San76
Cheers mate...fingers crossed
46466
Post by: San76
Just a quick update tonight with a small amount of after work progress on Ophelia.
Cloth is still a new texture for me, but i'm not unhappy with how the shirt is looking and i think the cooler colours make the face pop more?

well folks, another quick post work update. today - i learn to paint cut offs! hopefully they look denim? or at least...denim-ish? tomorrow....i tackle the belts. im starting to regret gluing the hat on. in retrospect might have been a lot easier to paint seperate!

46466
Post by: San76
Thanks gits! To be honest, I'm fairly slavishly trying to copy the colours used in the box art which has a white shirt and blue shorts. Mostly I'm trying to use some of the advice I've read about mixing warm and cool tones on a model.
47942
Post by: bebopdrums2424
Thats a big thing...warm and cool....takes painting to the next level really, something im trying sort through and apply as well! (always hoping for criticism on things that i attempt and fail at btw )....i can see already how great this mini above is going to be! the denim is fantastic. By the way, what scale is this mini? I think after this infinity stuff i want to paint some larger scale stuff that isnt so painstaking....the more i paint that sniper the more im disliking it >_<.... lol argh....anyways...cant wait to see where you go from here. always have loved your painting and you know it

Bebop! Good to see you man; hope the gigging is going well.
This is the first time I've tried to take it into account (the whole colour tone thing), so will have to see. Loving your infinity stuff btw. To the best of my knowledge she is 1:32 scale...and she is definitely not bigger than gw stuff. There is a shot above with a ruler but to give you a quick idea, here is ophelia next to standard ork boy

Sorry to keep drip feeding updates guys, but it takes me ages. besides, the act of posting and whatever comments i do get seems to stave off the inertia that i inevitably get.
so..todays drip...boots! trying for worn leather. i think this might be the most layers ive ever done on something to then think to myself "well, you really cant tell!". anyways,...hope they fit in ok
...oh and sorry if the pic is blurry but very hard to get an iphone to focus on something that small!
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
The browns are lovely and warm... but if I'd hazard a guess... perhaps too rich to really represent warn leather. I'd expect worn leather to be faded out to grey somewhat, rather than just going to a lighter brown.
46466
Post by: San76
You know what, I think you are totally on the money gits! I think maybe I put to much yellow into the mix. Tomorrow I might make up a desaturated version add that to the highlights and see?

Well, no progress over the weekend...but tonight I decided to tackle the belts.
In the spirit of trying to push myself, I followed some of the tips from the amazing Roman over at massive voodoo, to try and get a more interesting and textured leather. It was a bit hard to get the photo, the belts are very small... But I think it looks more interesting than my usual Calthan brown - wash- highlight.

Well, today's incremental advance: the hat is done!
I toyed with going for a colourful red or blue, but settled for tan instead . I wanted to try blending (without an airbrush) so I based the tone on my old field work akubra. I think the brown is a nice neutral tone throughout; hopefully it looks different enough from the belts.

Well just an incremental update today. Blocked in some of the trim. Trying something a bit new for me: coloured the ledbelcher with black for trim. I really liked the depth the zenithal gave and I'm hoping that starting with a darker trim will give me something to shade up from. Think I will have to add some colour to it through glazes, as it does look a bit like a lead pencil colour!
Included the previous shots for comparison.

Post by: San76
Thanks so much for the encouragement Gits!
well, yet more WIP on the praetor.
looking back over my old models, i wasnt happy with how plain the armor looks. at the time, i loved them but now they look so blocky. so, im trying with this guy to push my yellow skills a bit. i know that battle damage etc adds interest, but im trying to move past plain slabs of yellow armour. time will see how effective it will be... in the pic below i can at least say there isnt a lot of glare on the armour, the highlights are as you see them (the metals are a different matter).
so, since last update ive painted aquilla, but also deepened shadows and layered in some highlights. with the highlights ive tried to make them a bit more dynamic than the edge highlighting i normally do. all comments gratefully received, as well as tips on how to do that powersword. no idea what the fashion is for those these days! if all else fails, im gonna totally steal nerdfest's technique...
next up will be time to decide if i want to do battle damage, then...oil wash...

well, praetor finally finished!! i loved painting this model, was a great way to get back into things.
i tried to do a few different things with this guy, mostly in the shading, to try and add depth and realism. i find yellow much harder to shade than some of the other colours ive used; dont want to make him look like a banana so, ive tried to keep it fairly subtle, but hopefully it has still added something? the pic with the face close ups is a bit over lit because the shoulderpads cast a massive shadow and made it hard to get a decent shot
well, i hope you all like him. all comments gratefully received!

Well, like a bunch of people, I've been lured in by the new GW models . I'm not sure about the lore, but the models look pretty good! Gonna start with some marines, but I think the nurgle forces could also be a good chance to broaden my horizons.
Anyways, started putting them together this evening. Normally, I would paint helms separately but since these are push fit I thought I would assemble them at once. Also, I've got to learn to paint faster!

I really wish I could get a game in! Sadly, I don't know many folks that play.
I washed the mini with Windsor Newton Burnt Umber oil paint. I find it gives a good result for figures that are a bit beat up. And it's great for streaks etc. The main issue is the gloss coat before and after.

Desubot beat to asking about the IF decal... I have a massive stack of old decal sheets, but I'm slowly running out of IF ones. Is your's the FW HH decal sheet? The fist itself is more square than the decals I'm using, and it looks a bit weird to me.
Loving the Primaris Marines, though. I'm going to be going down a very similar route as yours when I do mine. Will definitely be coming back for some inspirational viewing

@Desubot and Zambro - the decals im using are from the Forgeworld sheet i picked up a couple of years ago. personally, i really like the Forgeworld take on the IF logo; though im still jealous as hell of people who dont have to try and get a circle on to a curved shoulderpad!

Thanks so much everyone! I tried quite a bit harder with these guys than on previous non-characters. I think the shadows painted up subtle, but do add something. I am sold on weathered marines now.
As for the Aquila, love the mcmaribes too but I went this way early for some reason. I totally take on board the tips. It's actually bone coloured but looking at it this morning, needed to brighten it quite a bit to stop it washing out. Ahh well, we live and learn
Now to decide....more marines or something different...

Well, My friend needs some help with getting his new tau army off the ground, and is kindly letting me help. He is looking for a mostly white colour scheme, with red trim.
So, I have knocked together a test model for feedback. Painting white isa new experience for me. Didn't think I'd ever miss yellow lol!
So far colours are blocked in. Someshading with airbrush, some by hand. Light weathering in. Next steps: gloss coat and then oil wash for armour. And symbol ....
Got to say, after primaris this guy seemed tiny! Friend wants some glow effects, so if anyone knows a good tutorial.....

Thanks whale. I am pretty happy so far with the white armour. Will be interesting to see how the oil wash goes. Normally (say, with IF) I wash the whole plate, then remove the oil from everything except the recesses. Am a bit worried with white that I'll end up with tan....but test tau is brave!!

Thanks very much Albator, that’s very kind! No problems on the recipe. I’m sure that there are better ways, but this is my recipe:
- prime black
- Highlights in grey primer
- Light Averland sunset
- Vallejo gold yellow on lighter areas
- Vallejo yellow on raised areas
- Vallejo yellow plus white on most raised
- Averland sunset + xereus purple (5:2) in shadows
- Step 7 plus small amount rhino hide in deepest shadows
- Light spray of sepia across model (very light).
Today’s update, decals and started weathering. Always hard to bring myself to do it after spending ages getting the yellow in.

Albator, I’m sorry mate, I totally did mean the GW wash. I think it’s called gryphonne sepia? And yes, I airbrush it on lightly. Kinda like a filter.
I should add that after those steps I like to wash the model with burnt umber oil, then remove the wash from all but the recesses. I’ve found that by washing the whole model then cleaning it, there remains a tiny amount of oil, like a filter, across the whole thing which can give a nice effect. . This can darken the tone though. Best examples would be praetor or the recent Primaris squad.
Not sure if I will do this on the repulsor, or just washnithe recesses with oil.

Not sure if I will do this on the repulsor, or just washnithe recesses with oil.
Great, thanks a lot !!!

Back at work, so things have slowed a bit. Still, some progress has been made on repulsor, so I thought I’d do an update. Most metals basecoated, as well as areas painted black. Body paint work chipped.trying for a “used, but not damaged” level of weathering. Hopefully, later oils will add some depth here too.
It’s slowly coming together I think. Next step will be to weather the black areas, build up the metals, and start lenses etc. if anyone has thoughts or examples on weathering black, I’d love to hear them
Need to decide how hard to go with edge highlting....
As always, any feedback or thoughts welcome.

Well, it’s been a while. Progress has been slow, but it has happened.
Have done a fair bit on metals, rockets, and highlights. Trying for a more subtle highlighting than I would in a marine, fingers crossed it works out
Next step, more gloss coat then oils!

BEAUTIFUL work, really incredible.
Makes me like the Repulsor more, I can never unsee the flying Land Raider thing... which is what it is, I suppose.
Keep up the amazing work!

Thank you so much Cosmic.
I know what you mean about the repulsor, it does smell of heresy. But...it’s a great model

Thanks so much guys.
Well, progress has been madE. Finally, the highlights are done. I’ve applied an oil wash and progressed some of the weathering.
Thought I would do something a bit different with the progress pic, and hopefully show why I love oils on IF. No doubt you guys are all across this approach, but you never know, someone might find it interesting
Top image: acrylics only
Middle: oil wash
Bottom: streaks
Hopefully, won’t need too many more update pics before it’s done

Wow, that is great. Thank you for taking the time. The pictures and steps, at first glance, have such a small difference between each, but the overall effect is fantastic.

Hell Yeah San. Fantastic work man. My next thing for the slow grow is the repulsor and yours is my inspiration, though it wont be yellow! I especially love the oil washes, which ive never done. Great great great work always from you dude!

Thanks so much guys, I really appreciate the encouragement!
Actually got to paint a bit this weekend. Finished weathering the repulsor. Now this grav plates and the odds and ends (lenses, missiles etc) and it might actually get finished!
Now...if the power company would just finish their maintenance and turn everything back on!

I know this sounds wierd, and not knowing the kit, im not entirley sure im sure of what im looking at, but i Kinda dig the model w/o the grav plates underneath. That is the one element that has prevented me from buying the thing in the first place, and here i am looking at yours thinking you got some FW variant. Of course hardheaded gw purists would never accept such a thing, but for my aesthetic eye, it looks cool AF without that bulky sh*t underneath it.

I totally know what you mean B. I’m at the stage now there I got to get going on the plates and I’m not super exited about them. Other than that though it’s a great model.

it’s been a while but Hopefully I will have finished pics of repulsor in next few days.
In meantime, started a side project. Looking for something different to paint, and to step out of my astartes comfort zone, I picked up some skaven. Fantastic models and much higher quality for push-fit than I thought.

2 updates in one weekend! More skaven work. Added some deeper shadows to the TMM, which I think have made a difference, and started to try and work out how to paint flesh! I know he’s probably too shiny for skaven, but it’s a chance to try some new techniques

Nice shading on that metal - not all ratmen should be dirty and grimy in my opinion
And that tank looks lovely - although I didn't know space marines has hover tanks these days. Ideally need to spend sometime looking at what GW have done these last few years

Well, finally finished my repulsor! I loved painting this model. Really pushed my techniques, though I do think it’ll be a while before I do another tank!
As always I struggled with photos...but I hope you like it.

That repulsor looks really sharp! I wouldn't worry about the photos, you can tell if a miniature doesn't have justice done to it even if they don't come out how you planned. I can only image how good it looks in person
Also, what's your method for that skaven TMM? It looks really sharp.

Repulsor turned out awesome, really well done. I think the photos turned out ok.
The TMM on the skaven is amazing, I'd love to hear how you did that. and I wouldn't worry about the flesh tones, I think they turned out perfectly on the tail It's blending it into the fur on the rest of the ratman that will be interesting.

Amazing work on the Repulsor, well done for getting it finished! The photos are great - like lipsapips said above, you can tell that it is extremely well painted.
Also, the Skaven is top notch! In a way, the one that you’re painting above sort of looks like a Greek warrior with bronze armour, in a very good way. (Sure Cosmic, sure... )

Thanks so much guys! OMN, I will do you a recipe this weekend. Cosmic, I totally agree with you! At first I thought it was wrong to paint him that way, but now, im loving idea of skaven legions/cohorts!
Well, an update on skaven tonight.
Couple of new things for me, mostly around trying to bring some textures onto the model. I’m not unhappy with the cloth...
He’s nearly done!

I think he looks great San. Neitral colors for the most part but dynamic all the same.

Thanks Gits. Yeah, was a conscious move to desaturated the cloth and fur. Trying to keep focus on the green and red....we will see if the plan works out

Thanks so much guys, i really appreciate it.
OMN, as promised this is how i did the TMM on the skaven back. all paints are from the Scale75 "Metal N' Alchemy" set unless marked.
1) base colour "Decayed metal"
2) first highlight in raised area "Old Copper"
3) narrowing highlight in, " Victorian brass"
4) wash with Secret Weapon "Armour Wash"
5) glaze with gryphonne sepia
6) work up highlight with "Victorian Brass"
7) very narrow highlight with Amber Alchemy. try and make sure you get some highlights next to very dark areas, this gives it the metal look
8) final highlights (super narrow) Moonstone alchemy.
9) i made a dark glaze of black and brown, and used this to darken the shadows, to increase contrast with stage 8. got to be very careful with this.
I hope this helps.
Well, i finished my first skaven. i got to say i really really enjoyed painting this guy. such fun models, and while i know AoS is plenty grim, it does feel a little lighter to step away from the despair of the Imperium of Man for a while also, played a few matches today. great fun game, thoguh i got absolutely demolished. my poor ratmen.
tried so many new things with this guy, the big focus being textures (the metal, fur, cloth) and also...a glow effect. sorry they are just phone snaps, i will get the full light set out when they are all done.

Ha! Whale I wish I could! Gits, I’m not sure. It’s just an iPhone pic. These are pretty close though...my curtains really are that horrible green!
It’s maybe a smidge darker that in RL, but not too much ?? I mean..it’s rare that I can say all the colours in a pic are spot on right....
