@ SL: I want to redo them now! I get what you're saying, though. I'm not after a Golden Demon; I just want to paint neatly, and I can't do that when I rush. But you're right: time and place for everything.
@Ramos: Thanks, mate. I'm actually pretty happy with my painting now, but I know it will get better. (It's better now than it was a couple weeks ago, I think.) It took me a while to figure out that re-painting is ok. I think it was when Gits re-painted his Razorback that it hit me, "Oh, I get it now...." Of course, it was too late at that point.
Can't wait to see your army. I think they're going look great on the table together. We'll have to crush some Lamenter rebel scum!
@Ctc: Hey that would be great! I'd love to see your work in person, and Adepticon is an experience. So, yeah, start planning now!

Been working on a few details. Added some detail the bike bases so they better match the rest of the army:
Decorated bases for my Librarian and Apothecary:
Here's what they look like with the bikes on:
The base really adds a lot, I think.
And just for Ctc, some work on the banner
Not quite sure about the Turquoise. It's a bit more... turquoise-y in person. I think it'll be ok. I'm pretty happy with the lava at the bottom. Turned out better than I thought it would. Does it need a wash to blend the colors? I also tried to wet blend some colors on the flames, but it's too small a space for me to do that at the moment. I think I'll go with red flames, red feathers, yellow sun and rays. Thoughts?
And finally, made some custom decals:
Stupid paper went through the printer cock-eyed, but I thought, "well, they're still useable." Nope, the colors are too bright. Need to darken the yellow and red in the original image. Oh well.
As always, C&C welcome.
Thanks for reading.

I'm thinking you only need to do the Red Fire Hawk and not the yellow. use the color on the pad for that.

Turquoise seems to be one of those colors that just doesnt photograph quite right. Like all of my marines shift from blue to slightly green blue in pictures.
As to decals:
Test sheets are your friend! Run a few regular sheets through before you use the decal paper. That way you can double check color!
Im assuming its white paper? A little border of yellow is good, in that case. You wont want to cut the decal too close to the hawk, so without the yellow you'd be left with a band of white on the edges.
Regardless of white background or yellow, one of the best bets on getting the decal to blend with the pads is to touch it up with paint over the edges of the decal. Its hard to do on airbrushed surfaces, though.
Banner looks great, especially the lava! I wouldn't worry about a wash. Looks good as is.
Praise the Emperor!

I added ballast and paint to the bases of the bike. It's not so much what's different as what's the same: they fit better with the other troops in the army. Which is why I included the two Tac marines. Not a big change, but I had like 10 of them to do....
Solar_lion wrote:Is that a Lamenters body parts? Great something Else I have to Lament!
Lamenter, Tranquility Sniper, I'm not picky.... Sounds like you're going to need those tissues, though.
@Ramos: Thanks. yeah, I did run test sheets, but for some reason, I didn't think to put one of the test sheets next to the model. I was planning on cutting out the square, so I wouldn't have to be too detailed, and painting over the edge to blend, but now that you mention it, maybed I can still use what I printed, cut a little closer, and use paint to cover the lighter yellow....
@Ctc: Thanks. That's not a bad idea. I may try that.

Some more work on the banner. base colors are done:
I think it looks pretty good. Maybe a little too bright. My wife suggested giving it a light wash of Sepia to antique it a bit. What do you think? Also, what do you think of the ochre border? Not sure what to paint that bottom triangle, either....
Here's what it looks like on the OM:

I think the latest batch of work looks very nice YB. Keep it up. Don't get discouraged, just keep plowing ahead. If you can get those fire hawk symbols on their shoulder pads and vehicles, it'll make a HUGE difference in your army. Rather than just a bunch of yellow guys who could be anything really... they become a real chapter.
Keep on it, you'll get there!

@Solar - Those are clearly not Lamenter bits because there are no checkers. No checkers, not a Lamenter. That biker is clearly driving over body parts from other Fire Hawks.

Tried putting some decals on my Tac marines this morning:
Some of them came out ok (as you can see on the back 2 marines), others not so great.
I used this How to Apply Waterslide Decals Tutorial ( http://www.scalemodelguide.com/painting-weathering/decals/apply-waterslide-decals/) as a guide.
I realized after I took this picture that I wasn't blotting the decal before applying it, so there may have been an excess of water on the decal. That may have caused some of the problems. Also, after I took this picture, I went back and brushed over the decals with a clean brush. That seemed to remove some of the excess liquid and smooth out the decals some. Anyway, any advice would be appreciated.
The colors on the decals are a little light. Guess I'll have to live with that for now.
Next steps: paint the edges of the decals to try to blend them in a bit and then a bit of 'Ardcoat to seal them.
15297
Post by: Ramos Asura
The ones in the back look great!
Blotting will definitely help ya. Either a slightly moist paintbrush or paper towel will do the trick. It smooths on the decal and gets rid of all the bubbles.
I usually blot after putting decals on, as having a little water lets you move the decal to where you want it.
Personally I dont like soaking my decals for 20-30 secs like that tutorial says... I always find that the glue dissolves and I dont get good adhesion.
I dip my decals, then put them on a paper towel and wait a little bit (20-30 seconds, probably) until I can move them from the backing paper. I then use a brush to slide them off and onto the model, and combination brush/blot them with a brush and paper towel.
Looking good! Keep it up!
25926
Post by: Cutthroatcure
Did you wash them to darken them?
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
I think blotting will help as suggested.
- a light dry brush of the shoulder pad color around the edges should help confuse the color transition well enough.
- then use the brushable 'Aard Coat to cover the decal including going over the edges.
- when that's dry, spray it with Dull Coat.

Thanks, Guys!
Round 2: Assault Squad Decals Done!
Ramos, your tip about dipping the decal rather than soaking it was a great help. The decals didn't get nearly as wet, and I think, they went on much more smoothly as a result. Also cured quickly, too. Thanks, mate!
Also, painted the decal edges on the Tac Marines:
Everybody Conga!
Not bad, actually. A couple of the decals had some air bubbles, but most of them are decent. I'm wondering if I should (as Ctc suggested) give them a light wash of Sepia. That would darken the colors a bit and help blend them in to the rest of the pad, maybe. If so, should I do that before or after I hit them with 'Ardcoat?
Thanks!
YB

Are you using Microsol or Microset? I recommend both. In my limited water slide time, it has really helped. Also, with air bubbles, you can break the transfer and get the under color which just makes it look more warn and weathered.

They are looking great YB, one small observation for your next marine army is that the chapter symbols go on the left shoulder pad unless they have studs or terminator honours etc or are terminators in which case its always the right shoulder for the chapter symbol.

Post by: Gitsplitta
Not pre heresy... Early 40k. The switch to the other shoulder came with the advent of Mk 7 armor. Problem is that GW rewrote history to place Mk 7 armor back before the Badab War, which it shouldn't be.

Without retcons we'd still have all kinds of silliness, both 40k and otherwise.

Thanks, guys.
@ WM: Yes, MicroSol and MicroSet. Great stuff. I can't imagine trying this without Microset! I actually did break one air bubble, thinking just that. Took the head right off the phoenix!
@GiraffeX: No worries, mate. I appreciate any advice. I actually knew that, about the left shoulder, but I started building the army with Mk V armor marines, which have studs on the left shoulder, so I decided I would put the insignia on the right of all the marines. Glad to hear it's actually appropriate.
I'm pretty happy with them given this is the first time I've done decals. Couldn't quite match the colors, as you can see, but I think they're ok. I've since wahed them with Sepia (which darkened them a tad), 'Ardcoat, and Dullcoate, but they still have a bit of a halo. They look like each marine polished his shoulder pad to show off the insignia!
The Razorbacks are giving me some trouble, though, because the colors are so different. Not sure what I can do right now. I did put decals on the gunners. The base paint Gits used (Vallejo Olive Drab Primer?) left an intersting green-ish shade on them. I actually picked up one of the new Vallejo Dark Yellow Wash, which is actually green-ish, and I've been able to shade the decal down, but I don't know what I'm going to use to cover the edges.
Hey, so, I appreciate the comments on the decals, but whadya'all think of the Objective Marker?

@Graven & WM: Yeah, I'm looking forward to them. I've put off GK because they seem to be too popular, but having had a look at the codex, I see they're a very rich bunch, and I get now why people like them so much. Inqusisitors are fun! And I've got a Riflemen planned! Need to get some autocannons. though....

I have mixed feelings about this guy. On the one hand, I think he's pretty cool! On the other, there's a bunch of little things that annoy me. I think I over-rotated his right arm, so now it looks like it's at a slightly odd angle. Also, the shoulder pads are really awkward for some reason. He'll need some cleaning, too.
Anyway, C&C welcome and appreciated.

Once you pointed it out, I kind of agree of agree on the positioning of the right arm. I wouldn't have noticed it if you hadn't pointed it out, though. Still, it's looking pretty awesome! What sort of head are you going to do?
62749
Post by: Dr H
The right arm's issue isn't that noticeable and will probably be less so after painting.
From what I can tell from the five terminators I've built, unless you have the arms in pretty boring positions the shoulder pads are awkward to get on...
Like the little details on the scythes.

@Selvagio: Hey, thanks for stopping by my blog, and thanks for the comment. I appreciate it. Thanks for the compliment on the FH, too. They did turn out nicely, but they were more of a geam effort with big contributions from Gitsplitta and Solar_lion. The only models I did completely were the librarian, the apothecary, and the objective marke, though I do really like those models.
@Graven: Thanks, my friend. CSM? Red Corsair maybe? Or Badab War loyalist terminator? Maybe a Fire Hawk...?

Hey, Everybody, sorry for the lack of updates. I've been strangely busy lately, but I did finally get back to the Mantis Warrior:
@Ice & Gits: Thanks for the idea about the mandibles. They didn't quite come out as I wanted - I definitely need more work with gs - but I think they add a lot to the model. If I had only had a CSM Terminator helmet. Alas....
@Graven: Thanks for the idea of putting a helmet or such on the base. I had this great idea of putting half a terminator torso on the base, like it had just been cloven in half, even cut up a terminator to do it, but in the end, I thought it took up too much space and took away from the MW. So, plain, boring base. Probably not best to compete with Nerdy's base anyway.
I think he's basically done at this point. Time to start painting. Not sure I'll get him done by the deadline, but that's ok. It's good practice, and I really like how the model is developing. Plus, all the other entires are amazing!
Cheers!

Ok, painted the shoulder pad:
This was my first attempt at freehand, and I was quite pleased with it until I looked at this photo. Stupid close-up photography. I'll have to try to clean it up a bit in the morning. In any case, I took some notes from GiraffeX and Knightley on this. Thanks, Gents!
Also, touched up a few places and repainted the scythes. I had given them a blue wash, but I didn't like it, so I repainted them gunmetal and gave them a natural steel highlight along the blades. Not fancy, but I like them.
Just have to finish up the base (after I retouch the shoulder), and he'll be done.

Hi, Everybody!
Well, it's been a while since I posted. I was out of town for a while, then just busy. But, I have to say, I haven't been very excited about the hobby lately. I decided to work on some Eldar, and it looks like this will be the army I'll be taking to Adepticon next year. I put together a couple of lists, and it looks like the most efficient list is the most boring, vanilla list: Guardians & Wave Serpents with maybe some Wraithblades or Howling Banshees. Ho hum. So, I've been looking for some inspiration, and I think I've found some.
I've decided to follow Iybraesil Craftworld! Here's some more info for those of you who are curious: Iybraesil Craftworld.
I like this craftworld for 4 reasons:
1) It's one of the lesser-known craftworlds.
2) I really like the color scheme: turquoise and white. I've been wanting to paint turquoise, though I'll probably go with more of a bone color than white.
3) I like the matriarchal structure of the craftworld. I think this will give me some opportunities for modeling and converting.
4) I like the Myth of Morai-Heg, the Eldar goddess the craftworld follows.
There are a lot of good Eldar blogs out there, but at the moment, I've been inspired most by two non-Eldar blogs:
Gray's Avelorn Army over on Ulthuan.net
KrautScientist's Legio Custodes here on Dakka
So, without further ado, I offer a prototype for my Guardians, the Iybraesil Maiden Guard:
Just a prototype, of course, and it still needs some work, but what do you think of the idea?
Thanks!
YB

Good to see You back mate!
I like the concept, but I have a little problem to imagine a female head in that helmet, don't know why, but It screams masculinity all around, just a though.
Looking forward for more

Sounds interesting.
I think she looks perfectly feminine in that helmet...
Look forward to more.

Welcome back Yellowbeard. I hope the anti-modeling blues are now behind you. I look forward to seeing what you come up. Its nice to see you take in to account the fluff behind the craftworld. Can't wait to see more!

Looks great mate, lovely kitbash! Some random thoughts:
Chapterhouse have a couple of custom female eldar figures that are beautiful. Also, I would look to the dark eldar/elf plastics for bits for female eldar. I've really fallen for Vallejo's turquoise paints and highly recommend them. I find that gw nightshade is excellent for washing them and elf flesh blended into them at varying ratios works well for highlights. Spot colours for gems etc - maybe consider orange? Also I'm 100% with you on bone over white. And good luck, great to see you back in action!

Looking good so far YB, maybe some Sisters of Avelorn heads might be good to mix in.

It's probably better to start with a female model then try and convert a male one. The proportions are just off on that one, chest non-withstanding.

You know, I was really excited about this model when I was putting it together - and I still like the way the torso fits with the skirt - but there's something a little off. I still like the concept, but it's going to need a bit of tinkering, I think.
@Sel: Thanks. Yeah, I agree with you: the helmet is masculine. I was hoping it would be generic enough to pass for either, but the sculptor actually did a really nice job conveying a masculine face.
@Doc: Thanks, mate. Glad you like it.
@Ice: Thanks, Ice. I hope I don't disappoint you!

Um, yeah, women have those....
And by the way, that is a female model. The only "male" bits are the skirt and the helmet. It's actually a female Guardian torso. However, the way the arms went on (that is to say, "awkwardly") seems to have accentuated the bustline a bit.
@Ramos: Thanks! Looking forward to heavenly turquoise. Plan on avoiding hellish white by painting bone instead.
@Graven: Thanks, my friend! That means a lot coming from you. Vallejo turquoise is what I've got. Also picked up some Liquitex Professional Spray Paint in turquoise. Cost $11 at Blick, but that's cheaper than Army Painter. Should save some time. Glad to hear the Nightshade works well; that's what I was planning on using!
Oooh, orange! Hmmm... Well, Ice would approve...
Chapter House seems to have cut back on Eldar stuff. All they have is a jetbike. The cool farseer and Striking Scorpion aren't on their website anymore.
I had been trying to avoid Dark Eldar, but female Guardian torsos have become rarer, so I may need to acquire some Wyches or Kabalites.
@Gir: Thanks! Sisters of Avelorn were actually my first choice, but they were not avaialble anywhere nearby. So, I went with some Lions of Chrace, which I also like very much. Looks like I'm going to have to suck it up and order some bits!
@Miss Dee: Thanks!

Umm, you should sort that with him... Maybe over on one of his blogs...?
Well, thank you all for the comments. I have a couple of ideas of where to go from here. I think arm positioning might make a big difference. And, I've got a couple of other models to work on until I get a couple more bits to try....

Try to cover the face with a mask/cloth made of GS just under the eyes, like a breather, or a cow-boy scarf ?

Well, whatever the combination of bits is... it looks *very* masculine. Not a good look for a female elf, bust or no bust.

I can agree the head has a tad amount of male features, but it is an elf so already its kinda feminine.

Yeah they had to remove those due to their (still ongoing) lawsuit with GW. Overall the jury screwed up a lot, ruling some things as totally fine whilst ruling other things as infringing.... I dont know that much about legal matters. All I know is what I read online xD

It has to do with use of specific iconography that is distinctively gw IP versus "generic" designs. The specific models are possibly tainted due.to their initial marketing...
