Nice looking figure so far.

And great work continuing with the cathedral - the wire hiding girders are a nice touch

I get a little bit happy every time I see this thread come back up on my list of subbed threads. Imagine my dismay when instead of the cathedral I see a beautifully painted brand new skitarri

Ooh....shiny!

Nice job, like it a lot. The subtle verdigris on the gun is great.

And actually.....that red and white check is nice on the floor. Maybe you should re-do the cathedral?

Well in that case you know what colour scheme to use when you start on the mechanicus hall.

There will come a point at some point in the future (before the sun swallows us all) when you do complete the Cathedral. There will

And then you're going to want something else to fill that void.......

Yes, it's called the Chapter House & Cloisters board. The Manufactorum board will have to wait until after that. I suspect I may be retired by that point, and I'm only 37. Well, 38. Tomorrow. Woo....

And as for the "extension" - its a pretty big one! Oo-er missus...!

I'm back...

Quick update as I haven't on here in ages - couple of wip's of the 'pulpit':

One of the things I have most learnt on the never ending project: glue as few things together as possible BEFORE painting them, as doing the floor tiles on this is an absolute pain in the derrière... Also, the limited (thankfully!) number of tiles means that doing anything even remotely stylised (such as an Inquisition symbol) is next to impossible...

Oh and look, very nearly at the magical 40K views!

Ok then. For anyone who hasn't been following my Facebook posts, here's a brief summary of what I've been working on recently. Basically I've started work on the crater section of the main body of the Cathedral - I could have just plonked one of the GW craters directly on the board but that would have looked rubbish, so instead first mapped out where it would sit:

Then cut away the offending tiles from the movement trays so that the crater would sit directly in the base board:

I'll then use some of the removed tiles to go back over the edge of the crater so that they look 'pushed up' - obviously they need a bit of work to crunch the edges

Meanwhile, while board at work and between jobs I've been creating a scale(ish) diagram of the Cathedral floor to map out the colour scheme:

And how its started to translate to the actual build:

And yesterday, due to goading/promoting/suggestions from my FB groupies (do let me know if any of you are here too!) made my first trial attempts at marble, with reasonable (depending on the light) success...

The marble does, sadly, look better in the picture than in real life, so I need to make some refinements to the process, but it will hopefully look quite nice on the remaining 160 odd tiles I need to do of it....

Wow you really keep creating more work for yourself looking great mate and the marble looks pretty impressive I like the map out of the flooring good call that must help with the painting scheme.

Does this mean you will be going back over all the white tiles you have done already then

Thankfully the white tiles to date have been simple base coats (ok, with some fiddly re-groating between them) so they are just ready and waiting...

I really love your marbling technique. It's good to see you making progress on this mammoth build, phutarf. One commentary I would make is that the tiles around the crater would actually be thrown in all directions by the power of the bomb blast. Unless what you're implying is that the crater is actually the mouth of an underground tunnel (like a drilling machine came up from below), those tiles would actually end up in the farthest corners of that ruin.

It's good to be back on this (I think..). Regards the crater, it is supposed to be blast damage, and when finished (HA!) there will be cracked and thrown tiles all over, possibly some embedded in walls etc - however, I'm having to use a modicum of poetic licence...

Thanks everyone for the comments - I'm slowly getting back into the 'fun' of this massive undertaking, both painting and modelling-wise. Not much more (of particular note) on the painting front for the last couple of days, mostly filling in a few white bits and re-base and undercoating metallics, but I have finally worked on the upper 'crenalations' for the main tower, part of which will also act as a locking mechanism for the removable front wall.

I'm a big fan of pinning things to within an inch of their lives - amazing what a few bits of metal can hold together... I'm sure there were a few more walls on this thing previously:

So a few WIP pics from the weekend (with apologies for the poor camera work):

Front eagle nearing completion:

Work has begun on the non-ruined side of the main tower:

And continuing to re-base coat all the metal work on other areas (this is the most frustrating part of the whole process!):

Given how long it takes me to do this, the fact that I've not actually finished the build yet means I have no idea when this project will finally be completed....

Wow... Over two years since my last post on this project :-/

And having just picked up a paint brush and picked out a few parts, I recall why it's been so long - what the hell was I thinking making this thing so damned big?!?!

Terrain project: Imperial Cathedral @ 2018/05/03 14:35:44

Post by: Skalk Bloodaxe

quoting my post from October 2013-

"I know how absolutely huge that model is. About a year ago I spent a lot of time putting together GW buildings. I made some that were huge (and then tore them apart for smaller buildings instead) but the size I was working with is completely dwarfed by what you are building. It is going to take you months to finish this project."

I was wrong. Here's the appropriate correction- "It is going to take you months years to finish this project.

And please, no misunderstanding- you're in excellent company. I have projects from the 90's that are still sitting on my Shelf of Shame. Glad to see you back on this one, it's epic and so incredibly over the top.

Terrain project: Imperial Cathedral @ 2018/05/07 21:49:49

Post by: Phutarf

Lol.. Thanks Skalk. It's fair to say that IF I'd worked solidly on the project to the exclusion of anything and everything else, I could probably have finished it in months. But a two year hiatus? That's really unacceptable.

Sadly, it also looks like GW are discontinuing the kits used to make the Cathedral - thankfully I THINK I have enough parts to do both it and the Chapter House/Cloister board already, but it's a shame to see them go.. Oh well, doubtless I'll get round to doing a proper Sector Mechanicus board at some point too

Terrain project: Imperial Cathedral @ 2018/05/07 22:12:30

Post by: monkeytroll

No....the hiatus just means I got back into modelling just in time to see you continue. Thinking it as a service to myself, and others like me, rather than a very long smoke break.

So, no point updating this project without some new pics right? Well, here you go - I’m working on the ruined ‘manufactorium’ section of the building as I want to finally get this completed before moving back to the main tower. Logistically even this small section is a nightmare as I need to fully paint all of the individual components in it before I can glue them together, and the details are soooooooooooo time consuming!

It took me a moment to realize the "floor" was your painting mat. Do that! Seriously, look at the first 2 pics again. It's awesome. I've downloaded that pic and going to use it as inspiration for the flooring on my unfinished 40K buildings.

Speaking of which, that's disappointing about GW discontinuing those kits. Looks like the Manufactorum and Adeptus Ministorum are gone, as are the Cities of Death box set. eBay scalpers sellers are already jacking the prices. Nice.
