ckig's Infinity and other stuff - More Batman...and Woman 29.05.17 @ 2015/03/15 15:37:50

Post by: ckig

Hi Guys

Welcome to my new blog! It's good to be back after a bit of a brief hiatus. Though I dived into this hobby, with the wonderful miniatures of Infinity, I have since discovered there's a wide world of wonderful minis out there. So after some thought I've decided to retire my old blog, to save some confusion. This new blog will contain all my hobby stuff including mainly infinity but a bunch of other stuff too
So with that said. Here we go!

(16/03/15)
Here's what I'm working on

Dark Age
Brute Anchor

Great to have you back, ckig! Don't ever stop, minis are wonderful. Dreamforge has got some cool stuff, too. And they are pretty affordable. The ogre looks awesome so far. Keep it coming.

Cool, new thread for you to fill with awesomeness! It's always good to see people branching out into other games/mini lines!

The skin tones on that guy are looking great!

Out of interest, what Malifaux stuff did you end up getting?

Welcome back dude.

I Love the dark age minis (shame the normal humans are too tall to fit in with my collection blah blah blah) I'm def going to have to pick up some of the archangels at some point.

And echoing para the skin tones on that dude are looking great.

Thanks for the recommendation! Might have to take a look at them

I agree it's always good to see something different.

For my Malifaux, I ended up going with the Perdita Posse, I think each of them have a lot of character and they look like a joy to paint. And of course to oppose them I also picked up some Neverborn stuff, starting with the Dreamer, the little guys in there are too cute hah.

Yea, all the new stuff they've been putting out for Dark Age has been awesome. On the models themselves, they're nice enough, easy fits, plenty of detail. Some details like the belts, straps are a bit soft but overall pretty good

bebopdrums2424 wrote:Yup!! Nice work! That model looks like a lot of fun to paint!

Cheers. With this model I got to practice my skin tones a lot which is great since I haven't had much practice and is definitely something I could improve.

So here's a bit of progress on the model

Comparison shot

Almost done! And here's the rest of them ready to go.

Hope you guys like it!

Didn't use any purple there so it was probably a fluke haha xD but thanks! For the skin I used Cork Brown, Sunny Skintone, Basic Skintone and Skin wash mix.

Paradigm wrote:Nice work as ever, the first mini has gone from good to amazing with the skin finished and more colouts blocked in! Can't wait to see it finished.

Thanks! Was not really sure what colour scheme to go for so he is kind of an experimental piece but I like him so far.

And here he is just about done! Just gotta finish up the base now

Oh yeah, also have the new Outcasts book. Not necessary as all the Dark Age rules are free, which is really nice, but since this is the first of their new 'codex' style books I thought it'd be a nice time to start collecting.

It's missing a few pages unfortunately, some printing error for the first run. That's what you get for pre-ordering I guess :/

Inside is still nice though, fluff is alright, I like the artwork for the new nomads faction, and it's got a nice gallery at the back for pretty pictures

Guess that's it for now.

Thanks!

Ok so here's the finished Brute finished and based!

Nothing fancy but he does look much more complete now

Oh and also put together my first Malifaux stuff! Here's the Dreamer's crew

Some pics of the sprues

So many pieces!

Lord Chompy's bits

So.. my first impression of the box hmm. Well, the details are nice enough, not as strong as metal of course but good enough and it suits the cartoony style of Wyrd. Everything comes in so many pieces though, a real hassle to assemble especially since everything is so small and spindly. Even for the small guys, some of them come in 8 pieces! The assembly wouldn't bother me so much but there were also a few rather large gaps :/ not something I expected in plastic. Bit disappointed to be honest, the stuff isn't that bad I guess but I expected more, especially for the price. Chompy is pretty BA though

But what to paint next? Well here's my work desk at the moment. Probably need to get my LotR pledge done (ha), so there's Saruman and his pet Grima, with Gandalf and his pet Frodo. Also More Dark Age stuff coming, the Malifaux stuff, and getting back to Infinity as well there.

Mostly all grey at the moment, but I'll get through it.

Looks like you'll be busy!

The Malifaux stuff is fiddly for sure, but in general will look so much better when you get some paint on it. Personally, I'd put it up there with Infinity on the fun-to-paint scale, but YMMV. Have to say I didn't realise quite how massive the new Lord Chompy is, though!

What kind of style are you going with for LotR, do you think? Bright like the Infinity/Dark Age stuff, or something more muted?

Nice sunglasses! And models. Your painting area is so spotless, I'm jealous. Mine looks like I've been painting with toothbrushes.

Yeah the Malifaux stuff looks fun to paint, but ugh the assembly

With the LotR...well I think no matter how I try to paint it, it always ends up quite bright haha. Might do a few test runs and see.

Warboss_Waaazag wrote:Nice sunglasses! And models. Your painting area is so spotless, I'm jealous. Mine looks like I've been painting with toothbrushes.

lol thanks. And thanks for noticing the glasses haha. The painting area is still fresh, let's see how well I can keep it

So I'm feeling pretty lazy and wondering whether or not I should just put everything in one blog instead of upkeeping two. What do you guys think?

Been getting back to painting infinity now since this arrived in the post today

Starting my Yu Jing. Here's a test of some colours for Sun Tze. Not sure if I want to keep it. It's a bit more greeny fluoro than the pic. I like it but I don't like it :/

Any comments would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

He's looking good! My gut instinct if you decide you don't like the neon green armour would be to hit it with a dark green wash/glaze. That way, you keep the nice transitions and lines, but just add a little more depth.

RE: two blogs, I've never had trouble keeping my completely random hobbying going in just the one thread; so long as the title stays up-to-date, I figure the people that want to see your stuff will see it. There's also the the "Show off your Infinity/Malifaux/LotR" threads in the relevant sub-forums if youneed feedback from a more specific audience, so my vote goes to combining the two.

Yeah time to put it all together I think. Good point about the subforums

Bit of progress on Sun Tze. Coloured the rest of the green and some quick shading as suggested. Now just needs some highlights.

C&C always welcome!

The big guy looks great, and I also have to agree on that green - it's a nice shade you've got going there.

Thanks guys ^^

@ Desubot: I think the book is being reprinted? I don't think it's that limited anymore so you should be able to get one if you want . I think the book is great. It's got a few basic tips and goes over some of the techniques he uses briefly but its mainly a compilation of his work with tons of pics. It's light reading but it looks great and I'm a very visual person so I think it's worth it. And it comes with the cool Joan miniature.

Hope you guys enjoyed your Easter

Here's an update of Sun Tze

Green armour highlighted and blocked in the black.

Side view

Black armour highlighted

Back view

Wondering what colour to do his cloak. I'm thinking purple with yellow/gold trim.

Oh and here's an extra wizard:

He was part of my March LotR pledge (a little late ). Painted fairly quickly (by my standards lol), though it's a simple enough miniature.

Hope you guys enjoy.

Thanks for looking!

Glad you guys like the wizard too!
I appreciate the kind words everyone! It definitely helps

And so I've managed to finish up Sun Tze. Here he is. Hope you like him.

The face is still a tricky thing for me.

Wanted him to look very regal so decided to go with a purple and gold cloak

First time trying to paint NMM gold. I think it turned out..okay.. it's messy in the pics but it looks okay from afar . It was a bit hard painting along those tiny lines.

And another angle

I need to paint his rock and base.

That's him for now. Thanks for looking! Let me know what you think

Some WIP pics

Good model to practice painting skin tones on some muscle.

A bit of colour here and there..

I get lazy towards the end so the base is a bit rushed.. oops

Still a couple more of these guys to go.

Up next though, maybe some malifaux, or back to infinity

Lovely work as always ckig, though, if I may say, compared your other works, this fellow looks unfinished. I'm not sure what it is that Is making me feel this way. i think its that im used to seeing a few more degrees of edge highlights on your other projects. Some of the materials on his person are hard to identify. Like im assuming its nmm on the shoulder pad, but it could be stone? if its nmm it needs more contrast i think. The pants i think could use a little more high lighting too? dont get me wrong, its great painting! I dont mean to sound picky, but i expect the same from you in hopes of improving my game Im a fan of yours so i hope you dont mind my open thoughts

Haha yeah the name change really wasn't necessary imo. I could never do a whole IG army though! I'd never get it painted lol

Haven't been painting much unfortunately :(

Testing out my Yu Jing scheme on a Bao troop to see how it works. Here he is currently:

Loincloth not sure whether to keep it purple or maybe go with white.

Brown straps might go. Maybe olive or dark green instead.

Green armour is done. He reminds me of a turtle.

Hopefully I can get him done soon..

Since I have lots more waiting...

Bunch of new stuff has arrived!

Reinforcements for PanO

And Nomads:
More Bakunin

Plus Corregidor

And all the new Yu Jing Heavies

Think I have enough to keep me busy for a while

That's it today. Let me know what you think. Thanks for looking!

Thanks! The brown was more to just block ni the straps so I could distinguish them from the pants etc. Sometimes it's hard to tell with these infinity figs

Caught a glimpse of Sun Tze before he disappeared. That's awesome and thank you! Something I never expected

Thanks bebop! Haha I'm sure you'd do an amazing job at it! Your'e welcome to paint however you like. Good thing I don't claim to own the colour

I'm probably going to roll with the purple since I've started with it. The other colours well, I'm not dead set. I'm really just winging things as I go so I am always open to suggestions

Quick update on the Bao

Finished the arms and legs. Swapped the brown for green. Almost done!

I think the green works better than the brown. I think I imagined it to be a darker green but everything I paint ends up light and bright lol. That's just how it is I guess

I meant the browns...and the cloth...lol...i would paint something like that green put i think i would make the green > pink and the purple > that green. like my nikes....LOL. so itd be inspired by your paint scheme just not a direct copy of it. its pretty original gotta give you props for that credit where credit is due good sir.

@ Grimdork: Thanks! Yeah I'm looking forward to getting back into my nomads again

@ Shas: Thanks! Glad you like it ^^

@ Bebop: Thanks man! The pink and green sound pretty funky too. Would love to see that!

Finished the Bao finally!

Embarrassing close up pics
You can see the mess up close heh

I need to take some better pics for you too. I'm sorry :x

The loincloth was original white but I didn't like how it turned out so switched to safe purple. Need to tidy things up a bit give it some matt varnish it to tone down the glossy ink.

And finished!

So that's him. There's still three more of them to go. But maybe something else next. We shall see!

Thanks!

Thanks guys!

That's a nice metallic green there Shas.

It's been a long while since the last update. Sorry! I'm making it a new goal to check in at least a couple times a week. That should keep me on track.

I haven't been totally idle though! Another one of my goals is to complete one of the dakka monthly challenges
Here's what I'm trying to get done for this month's "Fast and Furious":

It's Yojimbo's bike by the way. I went with purple to tie him in with my other Yu Jing stuff but keep him different to the other Yu Jing bikes, so green for the Aragoto bikers.

Also been trying to catchup with some painting on the rest of my Bao squad. I've been painting them all at once. Look at me trying to batch paint.. sort of.. well it's only small batch lol. They almost done:

Just need to highlight the black and the gold, and some minor touchups etc.

I think I've sacrificed a little quality to speed things up but that's ok. In all honesty, after painting a bao trooper already and then painting three more is a bit tiring lol. I'll finish them soon but hoping to get Yojimbo done first

Thanks for looking guys! Hope to check in again soon

All looking smashing!

Regarding the challenge, I haven't had an unpainted 'proof picture from you, do you have one? (Don't panic if not, I'll take a WIP as proof!)

Ummm.. I don't have one fully unpainted lol oops

This is the earliest I have which was a couple days ago lol:

No worries, that'll do nicely for now! Next time an unpainted/primed shot would be best, but that's fine for now.

Hello!

The other day the missus remarked that I hadn't painted in while.. and that really hit me! It's true. Been so busy with work and other stuff bu no longer! I am back, for good this time, with a vengeance

The unpainted pile has continued to mount and its time for some action.

So first up the old Bao's that have been sitting on my desk for a while.

Here's another pic of one:

Couple of rough spots but I just wanted to get them done and move on. I will get a group shot with the rest but one's arm has fallen off so I'll need to fix that up first.

... I know I didn't get to finish Yojimbo :( sorry! He is still here but I've been motivated to paint something else at the moment.

Next on my Infinity list, the big Yan Huo:

I've been wanting to paint this guy for a while and he is great! In fact all the new Infinity stuff is really nice to paint, makes me not want to go back to the older stuff. The models just go together better, the slightly bigger size is easier to paint and the details are much clearer and defined; it's great.

It's a big model, so far I've painted a leg haha but so far I am enjoying it.

Certainly a very imposing and impressive model.

Quite happy with how it's turned out. We shall see how the rest of it will go I've left the guns off for now until the end.

Anyway that's not all. I've also been dabbling into the Batman Miniature Game. Great range of models by Knight Models.

I wanted to paint something simply and easy just to get me back into it, so here is the League of Shadows.

Ras himself, he has an unsually large head by the way..

Simple enough model but it was hard to paint his suit.

And i may have overdone the highlighting on his back :p

And his posse

Ying
The ninja's were fairly easy and quicker than usual to paint with a simple colour scheme.

Yang
So I'm not sure if it's the casting or just the sculpt but there is not much of a face to paint. You can try paint eyes there but there's just this void in the space so I couldn't really do much.

And Lotus

Here's the group all together.

So I would say... knight models have some great sculptors and the models are fairly accurate, however there's a fairly big difference in the scale between models. E.g. these guys are huge in comparison to the other models in the Batman range. I am not sure if it's just the models based on the movie; I've also got the BB Scarecrow and DKR Bane and they are also equally big (Bane even moreso but I can overlook him because he's Bane!). And then you have the Arrow from the TV series who is tiny! I will have to get a comparison pic up. People talk about the scale diffrence in Infinity but I think this is worse than that even. Doesn't mean they are bad models by any means, they just look odd together sometimes. Also I feel like knight models need to up their casting quality, sometimes it's a bit hard to tell where the flash ends and the models starts in some cases, and I may have overtrimmed a few bits. Overall I would put the models behind new Infinity and the new Dark Age stuff in terms of quality and how well they fit together.

Anyway that's enough from me for now. Thanks for stopping, and I will be back soon to keep at it!

Man... that head on Ras.. He looks good, as do the ninjas, but I have trouble looking at him next to them

The infinity stuff is great too! I like the color scheme a lot more now that I see it on a finished model, can't wait to see it translated to that heavy infantry guy, he looks beastly!

Hooray, another Batman painter! Oddly enough, I've got the exact same set of minis coming up in my next blog post! Suffice to say, yours are better!

I agree with you regarding the scale issues and casting; I was so pissed off at Ra's Al Neeson being so massive compared to Batman and Robin that I actually ordered the Arkham version to replace him. It's a great model, but a whole other scale! As for the casts, I found the arm blades on Bats/Ninjas were a nightmare, as you say it's hard to tell what's flash and what's detail. If I were to sum up the range, I'd say the design and sculpting is up there with the best of them (AK Bats and AC Robin are stunning minis!) but the casting could be better.

Would you mind taking a shot of Arrow and Bane alongside the Ninjas? Both are on my list to buy, but if the scale is off I might end up passing.

Would you mind throwing in a Bao Troop in that shot as well? I'd like to get a feel foe the scale difference with Infinity. If The Arrow winds up being in more in scale with Infinity, I might have to get him. If you've got the Gotham cops as well, I'd love to see how they scale.

Thanks guys! Appreciate the comments ^^

Yeah the scale for the BMG is all over the place. I don't think they are CAD sculpted. That may be a reason why.

So a bit more progress on the Yan Huo. Both legs now finished:

And since you guys asked, here are some scale shots of the Batman stuff. Hope they help.

Left to Right:
Sun Tze (infinity new scale), Bao Troop (infinity old scale), Arrow TV series, Ninja, Ninja, Bane, Gotham Police

Keep in mind some are on bases that make them look a bit taller.

@ Barzam: I would say that Arrow is a lot taller than the old infinity stuff but maybe about as tall as the new infinity stuff and could fit in with the range but he is a bit skinny compared to the new infinity stuff which are really bulky. He's scrawny compared to others in the Batman range as well so it may just be him.

Comparison among the Batman range.

I would say
- The Police seem about the same size as the ninjas.
- Bane is quite large, slightly bigger than Ras
- Deathstroke seems a bit small considering he's got all this armour on but not too out of place.
- Arrow as said seems a bit small in comparison.

Okay, hope you guys like it. Thanks for looking!

That's coming along really nicely! You've got that green nailed down!

Damn, Bane is huge! Which one one hand is fine as he's Bane, but on the other hand he might look a bit off in terms of proportions. Not as bad as Ra's by the look of it, though! Glad to see TV Arrow and Origins Deathstroke seem close enough, they are both on my list to get!

Post by: Barzam

Your Yan Huo is coming along very nicely.

Thanks for posting those comparisons. Arrow looks like he can fit in without any problems. The cop looks like he can fit in fine as well, especially with the newer Infinity figures.

Did you make those scenic bases, or did they come with the figures?

ckig's Infinity and other stuff - More Batman...and Woman 29.05.17 @ 2015/08/14 08:50:38

Post by: ckig

Thanks guys

@Paradigm: Bane's proportions are okay, although his hands have really tiny stubby fingers. The deathstroke model is great as well, it's got tons of detail on him.

@ Barzam: I didn't make those bases but the new batman figures do come with sculpted bases. I don't really like them though as the detail on them is pretty soft. and also not everyone fits on them that well.

Quick update here. The Yan Huo is almost done! Just need to stick his guns on. I should be able to finish him tonight.

The green can be a bit of a pain to paint since yellow-green has such terrible coverage. But I like the end result.

Let me know what you think. C&C always welcome

Still amazed at the transition between the colors. Looks great, now I want one in yellow to have the sprite twins (lemon and lime)

Can't believe it's been two months since I last posted Sorry! I've been away but Holiday time is over now :(. Back to reality and piles of unpainted minis for me.

So i guess, picking up where I left off..

Here's those pictures of the finished Yan Huo I promised.

You do have to pin those guns to their mounts. They are really top heavy.

All done.

And now onto his smaller cousin. The Zu Yong Invincible.

Just the chest area left to finish before I attach his other arm.

And the back exhaust areas.

And to finish off. Here's a scarecrow for Halloween.

My last two ninjas finally came in. So they're up next. Once I get them done, that should round out my 350pt League of Shadows crew.

Alright that's all for now. Hope you enjoy!
Thanks for looking.

Alrightey, Got the Zu Yong Heavy Infantry finished! Here he is:

I like how his pose is a bit more dynamic than most firing poses.

I think my Yu Jing is getting greener and greener. But I like it!

Completed back view

A bit of glow for the exhaust things. I think they're exhausts anyway..

Slowly rotating him around..

Can't really see the chest anymore. Oh well..

.. Well actually, I'll throw in a couple WIP pics just to show you I did get around to painting the chest area. It's actually a clothed area which was interesting.

Golden nipples!

So that's enough of him. Hope you like it.

Up next for Infinity..

A couple tiger soldiers dropping in! And get ready for another Yan Huo!

Thanks Dr H!

Time for another update. I will try to post more often

So I got around to finishing up my last two ninjas. Seeker and Shadow.

Since they are basically monotone, it does it speed things up a lottle.

And with that, my League of Shadows crew is finished! Happy family.

Hopefully things look a bit nicer with the backdrop. :p

On the infinity side, things are slow as usual. Been working on the Tiger solder a bit.

Here he is so far.

I'm really liking all the new Yu Jing stuff.

Even so, it looks like I'm adding Haqqislam to my collection now too D:

I thought I'd have a crack at doing the Monthly painting challenge this month Princes of the Universe!

My entry will be an infinity miniature: Tarik Mansuri

Here he is unpacked:
Front

Back

Primed and ready to go! I haven't decided on a colour scheme yet. Hmm..

Let's see how we go..

If you are going to do a "Prince of the Universe" using Infinity figs, Perhaps use either the one on the left or the second from the right-- although substitute a katana for the claymore-- in the photo below
Spoiler:

Tarik is an Emir. A fine mini too. Good Luck in the contest.

Thanks Para! Decided on the colours for Tarik, going to test them out now.

Cheers Warboss! Appreciate the compliment

That'd be a pretty cool conversion Red! My wallet can't handle another infinity faction haha x)

I did google Amir (or Emir) and it can roughly be translated to 'Prince", so it's pretty fitting I guess

So I've done some more work on the Tiger Solder.

He is almost done. Just need to attach his backpack.

Starting to paint Tarik now. Will post some WIP shots soon!

Thanks guys!

Sorry for not posting WIP but I did get my entry for this month's painting competition finished.

Tarik Mansuri, Amir of the Khawarijs

Trying to paint yellow for the first time on large surfaces. Something new for me, so a bit of experimentation on this mini. Going for a yellow/green scheme similar to the Haqqislam logo.

Very angry face, very well sculpted.

It's a nice dynamic pose as well.

Originally I had a bit more colour on his cloak, in the middle panels, but then it looked a bit too colourful and clownish for my liking. So I went with a straight brown coat to tone down the mini a bit.

Pic from above.

He will need some basing; as with all my infinity stuff at the moment. Might do it all in one batch. For him, I am thinking of Agrellan earth, quick and simple and fits the desert theme.

Hope you like it.
Any C&C is welcome. Thanks!

@Littletower: Thank you! As a character, he deserves a bit of extra attention ^^

@Evildrcheese: Thank mate! Nice to have you along There's not much in this thread lol but hopefully that'll change. Glad you like it.

@ Para: Thanks! Yeah he's great to just paint up, I'd love to see your work on him.

@ Barzam: Thanks Barzam. I do recommend picking him up if you can. I think he'd suit your Haqq scheme nicely.

@ Alpharius: Thank you! Same here, I'm waiting for some resculpts of the Khawarijs. Existing one isn't bad but it's just not scary like this guy. Although, I think the next book is still a while away :(

@ Camkierhi: Thanks Cam . It's not really that noticeable but there's two different yellows I tried on the mini. On the shoulder, pecs and knees its more a gold yellow, and on the rest its more of a light yellow. Hard to tell because I highlight up to white and I wash both with a yellow glaze which I guess brings them closer together. But all just experimenting here.

So I've gotten around to finishing off the base. Just something simple, because I'm a simple guy. I tried a bit GW's Agrellan earth mix. It's fun to use actually and I think it worked out all right. You don't get much in a pot though, and you use a lot, so basing large armies with it is probably not very economical.

Here's some updated pics. There's a few more angles in my gallery.

Sorry for the pic spam! But hey since it's a new page anyway.

Close up of his angry face.

I have no photoshop skills so no fancy collage .

Oh yes and I forgot. I finished that Tiger soldier and am onto the next one now.

Here's the finished one.

Pic of the back. You can't really see the back detail if I set him down because of the angle of the miniature.

All right. Thanks for looking! Hope you enjoy

First time dropping in after seeing, and loving, your entry in this months painting competition. I have little knowledge of the Infinity miniatures but this is excellent work. It is eve more impressive given the generally trer scale of the miniatures.

The green on the Tiger Soldier is amazing as is the yellow on Tarik. Subbed.

Did you ever start work on the Malifaux Dreamer crew on the first page? Would love to see you tackle Lord Chompy Bits.

Haha thanks Dr H!

Thraxas! Thank you, glad to have you along. The infinity minis are fantastic, although they can be a bit tricky at times. Unfortunately Lord Chompy is still sitting in front of my all bare :( but since you asked I will try get him painted this month!

No painting in this update but got a whole bunch of stuff in. Got quite a bit of stuff during the Black Friday sales woo!

How did everyone else go? There were some fantastic deals on! Most of everything I got was about 50-75% off! Crazy. I bought a lot of stuff. Like a lot.

It's going to take forever to get through it all but those prices. I couldn't pass on those deals.

So here's my BLACK FRIDAY HAUL PART 1 (yes part one)

Wrath of Kings Stuff. Also you can see I picked up a couple W&N brushes and cleaner. They come in these fancy little tubes. How nice. I don't feel I'm worthy of using them just yet, but they're nice to have. Too bad they ran out of my main brush size 0. These are Size 1 & 2 brushes but still good.

I really like the steampunnk side of the Teknes faction. Not so hot on the funny looking gnomes and piggy people. Wasn't going to pick up the special character box since I only wanted the minotaur and not the other two. But at half price? Sure why not. Was pretty excited to see how they looked so I spent a bit of time putting each of the characters together.

The CAGE. He's my favourite model of the bunch. He reminds me of the Iron Giant.

The Mighty Taur. Very impressive model. There's actually a couple pieces not separated in the pic below, which I fogot about. THe two chimney stacks on top of his back pack are separate pieces. Also, the chain on his nose is very fragile . Be careful! The two tiny pieces on the sprue in the bottom right hand corner, I'm not sure what they are. I think they might be his nipples but the art work doesn't have them so I'm no sure.

Lineman/Controller. Pics didn't turn out great I'm sorry. But they are really simple models to put together. I only built one of each for now.

The little gauge on the back pack is actually a separate piece but its hard to see in that pic.

I like the cartoonish charm these minis have. Great expression on this guy's face.

All the minis have peg holes so they fit together easily enough, most of the time anyway.

Female lineman. Her face looks a bit funny and her arm didn't really fit that well.

Here they all are assembled. I don't like the really deep bases they come with, so I will have to get some other ones for them.

So besides Wrath of Kings, I also picked up some reinforcements for my Infinity stuff.

Some Aleph stuff. I don't plan on branching into Aleph just yet, but these guys can be taken in the ISS setorial so I thought I'd nab them.

And some more stuff my Corregidor and Haqqislam.

I am thinking of maybe painting McMurrough for the monthly painting competition. Could be a nice personal challenge, painting animal fur/skin and also tartans which might be tricky. So I put McMurrough together to see how he looks.

Front bits. He has Haqqislam style armour and backpack, but I don't know if I will do them in yellow.

Back bits. He's hollow, but he's still pretty hefty. He's a big model.

I'll see if I can get a comparison pic later but he is really big. Same base size as Tarik, but Tarik the super soldier is a dwarf in comparison.

And to round out part one of my Black Friday haul, I got a some of Werner Klocke's lovely Freebooter minis.

Picked up the books which are beautiful. No hardcover available unfortunately but the pages are very nice and have that old pirate scroll look. The game looks fun and it doesn't seem to take itself too seriously which I like. Only skimmed a bit of the rules but game wise it seems interesting, no dice are used only cards and you can target individual body parts, arms, legs, etc, and crits on those areas will reduce the mini's effectiveness. And the more you get hurt, the more your morale drops. It's only a few models each game, around 6-8, so the bookkeeping isn't too bad, and it's all on the cards to make it easier.

Picked up the Amazon crew to start, but I have some proper Pirates on the way

Put the starter box together. The minis are very tiny! Like old tiny infinity scale. But they are all women, so they extra thin!

I like how the mini's all come with sculpted bases that match the model's theme. So all Amazons have a sort of jungle base/ancient ruins.

The models are small so they can be a bit fiddly to put together. But they still have tons of detail. Hopefully I don't cover it all up.

Here they are all ranked up nicely.

Okay! Sorry for the pic spam. That's all I got for now! Some painting soon..

Thanks for stopping by.

Glad to see some WOK stuff here, personally I love the look of the Hadross miniatures. Sadly as is mostly the case with CMON ranges they are not readily available in the UK.

And never be ashamed of PIC spam, the more the better. And good luck with Lord Chompy Bits, just beware he is quite happy when constructed.

Hey Guys,

Sorry about the other stuff! It's kinda been put on the backburner for now. Back painting again now so here instead, have some pics of my next Infinity model.

Guija TAG. Some WIP shots of the legs.

Here in his bare metal glory. A hefty piece of metal.

If anyone was curious, the leg is base coated with yellow-green.

Then shaded with green ink. Highlighted up by adding yellow-green to the green ink and progressively adding more yellow-green and ivory to taste. Finish with top highlights of white.

Another view of them thighs and calves.

And again on the other leg.

Bottom half all finished.

Poor Seraph getting stomped on.

View of the backside.

All done for now.

Thanks! Hope you like it. And forgive my lack of updates :x.

Very Nice. Now, get a nice stand so you don't have to hold the mini while taking the photo. Less likely to get a blurry photo. The yellow/green works pretty well. Do like.

Great work Ckig. It's been a second but I remember the first guy you painted in this scheme...you really have it down..super clean, bright as ever. I bet these miniatures are just dazzling on the table top. Also super interesting to see how you did it with the yellow first. Makes a lot of sense!

I am interested in your concept for nmm over areas that are busy and heavily sculpted. Do you layer your lighter colors over a large area in general, disregarding details, to build the gradual brightening of the chrome, then pick out edge highlights etc etc at the end that solidify a nmm look, or do you paint each portion indivuifually? Like for instance.....the chrome part with all the tiny panels....(more specifically I mean like the boots on the sniper I'm working on....lots of sharp plates on top of each other.....) ..

Thanks man, great great stuff.
Cheers!

Thanks guys! Appreciate the words. Very motivational ^^

@ Red Harvest: I know Sorry for the dodgy photos! Good idea for a stand. Um.. Sorry these next pics don't have one haha.

@ BB: High praise coming from you. thanks a lot. Your work is something to look up to Umm regarding your question, I paint each section individually, I think. it probably takes longer this way but I like to break down my painting this way. Actually wait, I may do it both ways lol, Some areas I group together like all the tiny ribs I think it's easier to paint together since they all work together. But then some areas like the feet with plates in all driections then I paint them individually. If that makes sense. To be honest, I think I am just an ok painter (who takes his time) so I don't really know if that's the right way or not. A lot of my work is trial and error :x

It's coming along guys. A bit more work here and there. An arm and a chest done

So, for the crest on his head, not sure if I should do it white, or gold, or just green. What do you guys think?

The autobalancing thing makes colours this pic a bit harsher than they really are.

Will try some better pics later! Apologies. But hope you like it anyway.

Thanks guys

@ Shas: Ha! I'd love to see that actually. Although if you do want to keep the military colours, Ariadna may be a good fit for you.

@ Theo: Thanks for the suggestion. See pics below! Let me know what you think. I didn't do the unit logo though. I looked at the Guija logo, it's too crazy for me lol. In fact most of Yu Jing unit logos are.

Alrightey guys, the big guy is finally done! Yay!

So the 'gold' crest. Yay or Nay? I'm not sure about it so looking for confirmation. I'm actually not very good at the NMM. It looks better in the photos

Another angle.

Back view.

Love the hook sword on this guy. The NMM was easier to paint on small panels like on the hilt.

Went for a purple blade on the sword. Purple to tie it in with the rest of my Yu Jing.

Finally done!

What to paint next? Will be going through all my infinity stuff to catalogue it all and I will decide then. Will take some pics of it. It's a lot to get through D:

Cheers Bebop Too kind.

Littletower, thanks mate! And oh! I will definitely have to check that stuff out.

Shas, sounds good dude! Would love to see that!

Just a quick update here. It's always nice to come home and find a package waiting for you

New Flash and Green Arrow Book from Knight Models! Shelled out for the alternate cover lol. I really did not like the standard cover, partly because I think the CW Shows have really dropped the ball compared to what they used to be (esp. Arrow) but also because I think the alternate cover just fits in much better with the original Batman book. As you can see in the pic below. Much nicer imo.

As for the book itself; great quality. Nice new book smell mm. Inside, there is a whole ton of lovely pictures, lots of different art styles, there's new rules for vehicles and the speedforce (of course). There's a million new special rules, rules for teams of heroes (or villains), I'm not too familiar with the comics and stuff so a lot of these crews I'm not familiar with and lots of heroes I've never heard of . Oh and what's cool is theres new scenarios and rules for playing in different cities, Star City, Central City, Lian Yu! and Gorilla City! if you want to change it up.

There's some background in there too about the different rogues galleries for Flash and Green Arrow. Some of the model pictures also show off some new models I haven't seen before. (New gorilla models!)

Lots of reading to do

And with the new book. It's inspired me to get cracking on some old models sitting on my shelf. Time for the Arrow and Deathstroke! Remember when the TV show was good back in Season 2 :(

You may see in the background there, a space marine! Yup finally getting into some GW stuff.. but that's maybe for another blog...

And lastly, some stuff for the Marvel side of things.

Magneto will be my first larger scale model. Will be something new and a challenge to paint for sure. Also, not sure if anyone can confirm, but looking at the Groot and Gambit models, it looks like Knight Models are using a different metal for their new models? It looks much sturdier and cleaner, much better casting than their old stuff. I dont't know but it's all looking good.

That's all for now guys. Will get onto painting now

Cool stuff!

I hear you about Arrow, the back end of series 2 really was the high point, I reckon, this latest series has had the odd good episode but not anything like the Good Old Days. Flash and Legends of Tomorrow have been more than picking up the slack, but Arrow has been a mess recently (3 episodes to go in the UK, it might save itself... not likely though! ), Looking forward to seeing you tackle those minis, will the Deathstroke paintjob be based on the TV version?

I don't know if the Marvel metals are any different, but they were definitely much nicer/better-fitting casts than some of the old stuff, though I couldn't tell you whether that's down to new material or simply more effective QA. Can't wait to see the 70mm Magneto painted up, it should be stunning!

Just noticed the Space Marine Captain hiding behind Slade, will he be getting painted any time soon?

ckig's Infinity and other stuff - More Batman...and Woman 29.05.17 @ 2016/05/17 16:09:49

Post by: ckig

Yeah this is probably going to be my last season of Arrow lol. I still enjoy the Flash because it has interesting main villains and Legends is just a bit of fun on the side. Paintwise, yeah I think I will go for the TV Deathstroke to match the Arrow.

The old models were a bit of a dull sort of grey metal, the new stuff looks much cleaner and shinier to me. Maybe it's just me lol. Looking at the Black Flash model I got as well, he looks pretty good to me. Considering the casting was one of my main issues with them, I'm really glad they've done something about it.

And oh yes, will indeed be painting some space marines soon. Well actually I'm painting one up right now. I'll probably start a new plog for them since I find Warhammer and other GW projects, collecting an army an such to be a large enough endeavour to warrant it's own thread. I'll probably post something up tomorrow

Looking forward to that, will you be altering your style much for the 40k stuff, or keeping to what you've done before? The style of your Dark Age stuff would definitely look great on Marines.

Sorry for the slight delay.

@ Para: The one I'm currently painting is more the usual style but I think bright colours would still suit the marines It's also more for display so I can take my time. I may need to find a way to paint faster if I'm going to paint lots of them so I'm not sure yet.

@ Theo: Thanks! My Batman pile is much smaller than my infinity pile so I think I'll try tackle that first As for my marines, I'll be painting crimson fists Didn't have time to post them before but I'll get the pics up tonight.

@ Dr H: Thanks Doc Glad the gold worked out in the end.

so finished the Green Arrow (or just Arrow)

He's just.. well.. green, so not the most exciting to paint lol. Didn't spend too much time on him. But at least he's done.

In other news, my cat decided to raid my mini's shelf..

Sorry to say but Tarik Mansuri didn't make it

She's a young one and too cute so I can't stay mad but still lol putting him back together now. The damage isn't too bad surprisingly, Most of the damage was on the base's paint. Phew

Yeah my heart leaped when I saw him in his constituent parts on the floor! Nothing that can't be fixed though, only a couple minor chips on his cloak. Lucky.

Varnish your minis people! Or don't leave cats lying around

Deathstroke will be next but that mini is much more detailed and tricky than this one. And some lines are quite shallow so I gotta be careful.

Thanks guys!

Sorry I haven't had time to update. Rough week so not as much painting and hobby time.

Did manage to finish up Deathstroke here:

I tried for a similar colour scheme to the Arrow series Deathstroke.

Painted on the grills on the mask for that reason. Contemplating on whether or not I should cut the bandana/ponytail thing off as well for a closer representation. What do you guys think?

The highlights actually got dulled down a lot when I varnished him especially on the black/grey. But that's ok, I think the darker scheme actually matches the Arrow series Deathstroke better.

Here he is with the Arrow:

Just going to go for something nice and easier next. Simple and uniform, hopefully get them done quickly.

Some local reinforcements for the Arrow.

Thanks for stopping by!

Nailed it, mate! The subtle variations on the armour, the muted orange mask, and painting the grill on the mask is a (death)stroke of genius!

Will you be doing the cops as SCPD then? I've always thought that pistol Cop would make a good Quinten Lance stand-in, model and stat-wise.

@ Little: Thanks! I see what you mean about the head thingy, tempted to cut it but then I don't want to regret it lol. I guess my indecision means it stays for now.

@ Grim: Thanks man, glad it looks alright.

@ Para: Haha cheers. I really like the grill, simple but I think it makes it look much more menacing. I had the same thoughts about the police. In my games, 'Agent Ron' will be Officer Lance to me. I was going to go for black uniforms like in the show but decided it might be too dark, so I just went with normal blue. Guess it's more generic and recognizable.

Just some quick progress on a couple of the cops. His stick broke and I can't find it :( I'll just have to attach a bit of paperclip or something. Eh.

They're your basic mooks so nothing special. Trying to get them done quickly as I have bigger stuff to paint this month. Literally.

Pretty simply done but with them out of the way now, I've finally started on Magneto.

Small progress so far. Painted the cape.

Haha thanks guys!

@ Shas: That's sort of the look I'm going for with the clear lines and shading. Well hopefully.

I may just get him finished for the month! Last minute painting rally! Rarrr.

Big painting session today. Almost finished!

I can do it! I just need to paint his face and attach the floating metal bits he has around him and done!

Thanks guys! You've encouraged me to finish him up.

Thanks guys!

So it was 95% down before, just finished up the face and the base plate now.

Here he is:

The Master of Magnetism

Mugshot. Hmm, sorry it's not clearer.

Just testing a different backdrop.

Those abs.

Did matte him down a bit but my varnish also left some stains in some areas which I had to touch up even though I did thin it down. Never happened before :(. Might need another coat but I'm scared to do it now .

Oh yeah, I forgot the tiny bits of floaty metal. Ah well. I will add them on later.

Hope you like it

Thanks for looking!

Hey guys, hows it going, how are you all?

Thanks everyone for the kind words ^^

I've missed my blog a bit but I haven't been totally idle! Who's excited for the new Infinity starter? Have you pre-ordered your's yet? Can't wait for mine. Gotta say that I am really happy with this year of Yu Jing (my favourite faction). In anticipation of that, I've decided to try and clear a bit of my infinity pile.

So I've put together a list full of models from my unpainted pile. I quite enjoy the list building actually, even though I don't get to play much. It's a fun theoretical exercise and the army builder is a great tool.

I've gone with the Imperial Service sectorial as that is my favourite part of Yu Jing. Love those swish imperial agents. I'm glad that N3 has given them a boost in popularity with new models and a bunch of new link team options. I think there are over a dozen combinations in there.

Here's what I've come up with:

Imperial Service
──────────────────────────────────────────────────

GROUP 1 10
CELESTIAL GUARD Combi Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 13)
CELESTIAL GUARD Combi Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 13)
CELESTIAL GUARD Hacker (Hacking Device) Combi Rifle / Pistol, Knife. (0.5 | 21)
CELESTIAL GUARD (Forward Observer) Boarding Shotgun / Pistol, Knife. (0 | 13)
IMPERIAL AGENT Lieutenant (Sensor, X Visor) MULTI Rifle, 2 Nanopulsers / Pistol, DA CCW. (0 | 52)
GARUDA Tacbot HMG / Electric Pulse. (1.5 | 30)
PANGGULING Hacker (EVO Hacking Device) Electric Pulse. (0.5 | 25)
PANGGULING (Total Reaction, Repeater) Combi Rifle / Electric Pulse. (0 | 21)
LÙ DUĀN Mk12, Heavy Flamethrower / Electric Pulse. (0 | 21)
RUI SHI Spitfire / Electric Pulse. (1 | 20)

GROUP 2 2
IMPERIAL AGENT (Chain of Command, X Visor) Combi Rifle + E/Mitter, MadTraps / Pistol, DA CC Weapon. (0 | 36)
IMPERIAL AGENT (Multispectral Visor L1, Marksmanship LX) MULTI Sniper Rifle / Pistol, CC Weapon. (1.5 | 32)

5 SWC | 297 Points

Open in Infinity Army

The idea behind the list is to have the Crane as a beefy Lt (I'm of the belief that the leader should be someone special not a simple line troop hiding at the back). He's a solid toolbox heavy infantry supported by a link team of celestial guards to protect him. The hacker to stop enemy hackers getting at him, and a couple of speciliasts in the team as well. Then you've got a bunch of remotes to pad out the group. Garuda for some drop troop shenanigans, some support bots, and some MSV against enemy camouflage. In the second group You've got a couple of Pheasants as a duo team. More defensive with the mad traps and sniper rifle. And as they're free agents, if the first group takes casualties, I can slot them in to replace them. Plus they have Chain of command in case my LT dies, I've got someone to take over.

Anyway that's the theory behind it. What do you think. Not that I know what I'm talking about, I'm not much of a gamer or tactician

So here is the list all assembled.

It was actually kind of a pain to put them all together. All the models here are older N2 models, i.e. very tiny, small contact points, and the pegs/holes don't fit that well. It really made me appreciate how much nicer the newer models are. Corvus Belli have done a really great job improving the quality of the miniatures, not just in sculpting but the casting and design of the moulds. The remotes and garuda in particular were particularly annoying. Nothing wanting to stick or stay in place. I actually glued the guns on the second remote wrong, so they are pointed down a bit instead of forward. They are underslung on the wings with a tiny contact point which I thought was ridiculous. Illjust pretend the wings can rotate up and down to aim the guns so all good.

Sorry for the babble! So here's the first painted model

The Imperial Agent Pheasant Rank.

He is actually one of my favourite models and one that first drew me to infinity (then Icestorm came out and tipped me over the edge). I'm a fan of the older pheasant models, I'm lad I picked them up. I don't like the direction they've taken the new one at all. This one was a bit tricky to paint just being so tiny, made a mistake on his knee pads which should be black not green as they're part of his padded pants not the solid armour plates on his shins. But not a huge deal. So that's that one done.

And the next Pheasant, WIP:

Need to highlight the purple, paint the green and should be done

So that's it for now. Of course and comments are welcome! Thanks for stopping by.

Lovely golds on that second chap! It's all good, but that is just stunning!

I've not preordered Red Veil as I don't want to repeat to what I did with Icestorm, buy, paint then do nothing with it for two years, but I'll definitely be looking to pick up one or two of the minis from the set down the line, there's some cracking stuff in there.

I prefer the older Pheasant design as well. The sniper has a bit of swagger to him that I really like. Someday I should pick it up before it goes out of production. That purple looks really good. Is it all hand painted, or did you use an airbrush to apply it?

I was justwatching a series of anime and the nobles or Orbital Knights wore a suit of burgundy with trim, that sniper in purple and gold trim coat reminded me a bit of that.

Ariadna first drew me in for Infinity figures, and then I had to go get Morats,,,I like the brutal, and simple stuff I guess.

The murder monkeys are hard to resist.

I do like the color scheme on the pheasant ranker.

Not going to pre-order Red Veil. I'll wait for a Miniature Market Deal of the Day. ($60 instead of $83. The LE Yuan-yuan is not worth $23 to me.) Or just get the Haqq starter pack in January or February.

Hello!

Just popping in to say i'm alive!

Been pretty busy with real life stuff. Haven't had much hobby time unfortunately.

I had to check where I left off since I forgot. It has been a while..

And well here's that pheasant agent from last time that's finished.

Trying to get back into it now. Slowly slowly. Past few days I've been painting up this guy:

Feel a little weird to handle a brush again but it's nice to get back into it.

Hopefully I can keep it up a bit now .

C&C always appreciated! It's always a good motivator

Thanks!

Thanks Theo! I'd love to see that actually. And my green is actually quite simple. Yellow Green mixed/shaded with Green Ink. Add ivory/white to for highlights Although Yellow Green paint is a pain to work with. Terrible coverage and terrible consistency.

Camkierhi wrote:Fantastic colour on the infinity, great work as always, but that black on the bat is looking extremely good.

Thanks Cam! I've been painting so much black, getting a bit tired of it actually. Going to paint something more colourful next.

Dr H wrote:Lovely green as usual.

Cheers! Hope you like the finished one

Here's the Dark Knight painted up.

So I tried to keep the highlights on the cloak a bit more subdued just enough to distinguish it ... because I know I can sometimes take the highlights too far but I didn't want it to take the focus away from the main body.

This Bat is based on the Nolan Trilogy and his armour is actually quite dark in the movie, you can't make out much. But there's all these weird shaped panels all over him, I think its good to bring it out on the mini, so they are definitely highlighted a bit more and are more grey than black. But I think keeping the mesh underneath black helps and the more subdued cloak keeps that 'black' look that befits the Batman.

Just a lower angle for you to see.

Spoiler:

It's a very two dimensional mini, I didn't bother taking a picture of the back as all it is, is his cape. But maybe I should have anyway. For posterity.

Anyway quite happy with how he turned out. Looks fine from a normal distance and that's what matters

On to finishing his mounted version on the batpod. I tried to take a WIP shot but since its most of it is still base coated black it's really hard for my camera (phone) to focus on anything. So I didn't see a point. Will show some pics when it's more painted.

Thanks for looking! C&C appreciated.

Thanks! Glad you like it. That was the intention Edit: Sorry I missed your comment!

Got around to finishing the Dark Knight. Now complete with his Batpod.

Batpod.

Model was a bit of a pain to put together. Although I find that a lot with Knight Models. Or maybe it's just their older stuff. The more keen eyed viewers may notice the bike is missing a piece. There's these two wire bits that come up from the underside that connect to the arms of the bike. I think I may have chopped those bits by accident. Minor detail I'm not too fussed about.

It's mounted on a 50mm lipped base because there aren't any lipped bike bases I know of. A 60mm base would be more ideal but again, I cant find any that are lipped. There's a bit of overhang and very small contact points on the base but it'll do. I've also picked up the Eaglemoss Tumbler Batmobile so I can take some comparison pics later.

Following that I just wanted to paint something nice and easy. So here's the next couple models that were relatively simple and quick to paint up.

First up is Miller Batman, Classic comic costume, nothing too fancy. Very top heavy model that took a few tumbles and had a few humpty dumpty situations :(. His ears and toes you can see are a bit stubbed.

I think his face looks a bit more 'Sad old man' than 'Grizzled Veteran'. lol oops. Still nice enough model and fun to paint even if simple.

And next we have another member of the Bat family: Batwoman. Sorry this pic isn't that great.

Again, just wanted something simple to paint, could probably spend a bit more time on her but I think I'll move on.

Currently working on the SWAT team to finish up my Batman DKR crew and then we'll see and go from there.

That's it for now. Thanks for looking

Top work on the Bats of all flavours, I particularly like how the Miller one has come out a lot more saturated and less shiny than the others, it suits the comic book style really nicely.
