Hello, and welcome to my current painting blog

I have decided that rather than creating different threads for each crazy gak i paint, i'll keep a single rolling thread and will update the title when needed.

As those following over the years probably noticed, i'm only painting but not playing at all, so it'll be an interesting mix.

What i'll add here to start with is the 2 Horus Heresy plastic boxes - planning on doing Imperial Fists, Thousand Sons and World Eaters.
Haven't decided on the 4th faction yet

I'll paste below links to various completed stages over time.
And now, the original post and the start of the Mechanicus painting!

Ave Deus Mechanicus, brethren adepts

As of today, I will start working on a game-valid, Mechanicus army. This will consist of 2 formations, the death star Cohort Cybernetica and an Ironstrider Cavaliers.
As I understood from other members of the conclave, I should be able to field these 2 formations without needing to declare them as Unbounded.
However, as an adept that has just joined the ranks of the Mechanicus, I still have to learn the rules of Warhammer – so for the time being this is more of a modelling project rather than a battle-ready army.

To please the Omnissiah, the army will be painted in Mars colours and will have its very own diorama. The terrain will be a raised, martian, smoking battlefield. Minimum debris/mechanical parts spread on the soil. However, I am thinking of adding the objective markers as well as part of the diorama, but for the moment I need inspiration to further expand on this subject.

Work has started with the small guys first. That’s the Dominus, the 2 Datasmiths and the 3 riders. Pictures just for the first 3, as the riders were a nightmare to get standing on their own only with blutac. Regarding the Datasmiths, I’m quite happy to see that while their posing is fairly rigid, it is possible to incline one to his left and get a much more dynamic stance.

And a very quick look at how I plan to build/arrange the diorama. Top and front view, for a better noospheric representation. Hexamathical measurements have been taken, and will result in a 45 x 33 centimetres board, in the lettering of Old Earth.

+Clarification: I do intend to use rail (o-Gauge, mode train scale, etc) smoke-generators tied to a series of thin pipes (straws?!) to get a nice smoking battlefield effect. As I understand, the majority of these need a power connection and will not work on simple batteries. Wiring the entire diorama to a wall socket won’t be a problem.+

+Interrogation: Is it possible to fit these generators up-side-down, so the smoke will be pushed down the pipes? Alternatively, is the use of a tiny/laptop fan advised, in order to get the smoke through all the piping and “out of the ground”?+

+Request: Any adept with basic or extensive knowledge about rail-modelling and smoke generators is kindly asked to step forward.+

ooooh - liking the idea. Have fun with the new AdMech figs - they are glorious!! (Though the Kastelan heads are a bit iffy.....have a look at FW's Castellax for a different take) I've been working through some of the new GW AdMech stuff and really really loving painting them. One wee word of advice, paint them in sub-assemblies; they are so detailed and with some many wee parts it's hard to get into the tiny nooks and crannies otherwise. Enjoy and may the Machine God forever smile upon your calculations

Haha, i had a feeling you'd be the first one to comment lol.

Regarding sub-assemblies, i'm all up for that. As you probably noticed on my Death Guard thread, i paint everything and then i put glue to the wound

As for the heads, i got two cool sets, if you need some eBay can help for "alternate Kastelan heads".

I plan on using 3 of them, and for the fourth just use the standard one. Filled in and smoothed out, and paint it as a special:

Thank you for the advice, brother. And may Omnissiah shine upon your Knight!

Glad to see y'all like the new heads. They feel a bit weird being so small/short, compared to the bulk of the robot

Also, probably no one noticed - the heads for the Datasmiths are also different, as i didn't liked the kit ones. Went with some from the Ironstrider, but now the cables from the front unit to his head won't fit. Need to work on that

A bit of work was done here inbetween Death Guard contemptor bitz.

Nothing to write home about, really. Just primed the units with Vallejo black surface primer. First time using this stuff, and it's a blast! Even easier to clean the airbrush afterwards

Next step will be masking and painting the robes
Pics, as soon as possible

Ha, not a lot of work actually Bash
But thanks!

That said, i managed to paint the robes yesterday. I might have went trigger happy on the orange for the Dominus, i'll lay a bit of red laze to see if it fixes it.

Before and after taking off the blutac

And the Dominus blutac'd in place to get a better view

Next step, metals. Probably large areas will be sprayed with Alclad. Then bronze trimming

Anyone who might have a word to say re: the glazing and if it will fix the orange, feel free. Never used a glaze before.

Also, still looking for hints regarding the smoke generators.
Stay tunned!

Yeah, i think i read this idea with blutac here on Dakka. And was thinking wow, that really makes sense.

Of course, it's not very precise around small details, but i can't say i'm bothered, there's minimal blocking to do now

Did you find that the blu-tac left a residue on the bits it was sitting on? I gave this a try once and it may have just been my particular brand of blu-tac, but there was a film of gunk on the bits where paint wouldn't sticl

@Januine is right here. Just use a bit of blutac to remove anything. Now, i guess you mean a sticky residue and not tiny bits of blutac? I haven't had any issues like that, but then again i tend to use the same blutac again and again and again. Give it a try as per Januine's instructions or grt a different brand

Right gang, here we go again!

The Dominus has received some much needed love
All blocked, and metalics drybrushed - touchups needed

And after about 3 more hours, bronze trimmings complete, as well as metal washes and drybrush highlights.

The orange trimmings around the holes in the robe will probably take a lot of time next, so i don't expect to have a quick update

Thanks for looking!
Any ideas, shout
Alex

Yeah, ciuncky's gang
Welcome!!!

The metalics are already washed with Nuln Oil. Part of the wash was lost under the highlights, but that was later fixed. I guess the lighting was more than what these pics needed and that's why they look so clean. Anyhow, i don't want to get them very dirty

Yeah, some parts might have been a bit under-washed or the black obscured by new highlights. That said, i'm trying to take it easy on the weathering and not go trigger-happy as with the Death Guard.

Right adepts,

A lot of time and not any updates here. The Pictorium department has been at work in the metal areas, and after basecoating, washing, two layers of drybrushing and a second diluted wash, behold the results:

And a nice closeup:

Next planned steps, inside of the robes and bronze areas.
And yes, all the heads are missing, those will soon receive some attention as well

End of communicatum

Sadly no pics to go after such a long break. I have started to work on the beige bitz of cloth, ruined a cloak and spend an hour to redo to a fairly ignorable level…
Next thing to do is to basecoat, wash and highlight the heads, highlight and wash the cloth, and start blocking out bronze pieces.

Aaaaaaand a new member joins my - up until now single member - family of airbrushes, please welcome a nice Badger Krome !

The next weekends should be busy but hopefully I’ll have time over the week.

Hello (again) everyone !

Yes, yes, believe it or not, this is still ongoing. Had a long break after compressor died (awaiting a Neo Air now due to space and noise restrictions) and moved house as well, taking a large dent in our budget with furnishing etc.

Well, I’m happy to say all is good now, I got a solid wood board to stand on top of the livingroom table so I won’t damage that one with my paints etc and I’m back in business!

Sadly the light in the pics below isn’t ideal, I will soon get a desk led lamp to help with that – however, for those of your who are curious, the process of painting the legs and bodies below was a heavy drybrush very close to Awaken Realms’ own video on Youtube, and I hope they won’t get angry with me if I mimic a few more things – albeit at a much lower quality…

A bit of more work went into a communications tower, no WIP pics on that one but will show the complete one soon!
It’s just a very basic mix of metal, brass and corrosion so nothing extra outstanding. Not sure if I’ll use it on the overall display board or just as marker

As promised, the comms tower pictures.
As you can see, the tower itself is not glued to the base, but kept in place by magnets, so it can rotate and can be taken off and used elsewhere.

A bit of black added to various parts of the walkers, and all the still grey parts that could be seen in above image are now painted in metal or black.
Still got two main bodies to block, then I can start airbrushing the red onto them.

Updates to follow as soon as possible, but work keeps me away from my improvised bench :(

Sweet Omnissiah! I got to the bottom of the pit and now just quoting myself!
Yes, you guessed it, nearly 3 years later, this is still in play. In the meanwhile we actually bought our first home, so yeah...been busy painting walls instead of minifigures.
And rediscovered the joy of LEGO so now i'm down the rabbit hole.

Anyway, as a quick update, i felt like gluing rather than painting to get a chance to test the small table setup i now have.
Which means i went ahead and prepared all 4 Kastelan Robots for basing.

Some of you might recall (I doubt!) i planned on using some alternate heads. In the end i will use 2 normal, 2 alternate. However, one of the normal one now has a fancy crack to show the alternate one through it!

More pics to follow!

Thanks dude

A bit more work was done. I managed to drybrush and wash all the metallics.
I then remembered i had a bottle of the dreaded Vallejo liquid mask so i thought i should just mask out the metals and airbrush the reds.

Did about half of the bits, out of fear of leaving the rubber too long and it’s already been a few days on some parts, so fingers crossed it won’t come out with the paint underneath. If it breaks the layers, i might just recoat all in black but I honestly don’t feel like putting in so much work again.

Here’s a few stages of the process.

More progress done. Managed to mask all tje metallic areas and spray the rest. Removing the rubber was a pain, i imagine the rubbing way they show online will work on flat surfaces but for minis it just won’t cut it. I burned through 3 sets of latex gloves before i gave up and used my pair of tweezers.

Results are...mixed. There’s a lot of lifted paint around the edges of the rubber, but i feel it looks great and offers some intended effect of paint wear. I still have to apply red washes to bring out a few details but it might end up being a pin was rather than a full wash.

And of course. Once i was nearly done I remembered i was supposed to paint one yellow! So basically rinse and repeat. Not fun

Here’s current status of all parts. Will be on holiday for two weeks, so it’ll be a while before next update. I plan on touching up the metallic where needed so proper progress will come slow for now

This is getting embarrassing lol. The third time i restart this project, but i couldn't take that pile of shame anymore. So using the extra time spend in traffic during this CV19 lockdown, without further ado, I present to you...

MORE gak DONE

To quickly recap, i've spend about 6 hours touching up the reds and yellows, then the metallic where the paint flaked when lifting the rubber masks. Horrible job that needed to be fixed properly as i decided to go with pretty clean builds / no battle damage.

Starting with a good use for the less used Badger Krome, i did some fancy green and yellow highlights, first time i did at such small scale and a bit difficult due to having a Neo Air compressor which won't allow fine tuning.

Up next, some decal job!
Stay tuned, this thing will END!

I wouldn't have expected anyone else to comment first after this hiatus lol!

Anyway, i managed to get to the decals part. It's probably my favourite area of any build, but sweet Omnissiah was this a chore.
As i'm horrible at freehanding, i used the line & square decal that you see on hoods and robes instead of painting it. Of course, the decal is formed of 2 other thin lines, so having to cut those out perfectly, then having to chop the correct decal into a million tiny pieces to make it fit properly to the curves of the models wasn't fun at all!

Final touchup with wite paint to fill in the cracks left by cutting. The pictures actually show a bit of mistake when painting, but not really visible by naked eye so i won't even bother going back to fix those, i'll probably ruin more.

Other decals on Ironstriders and Kastelans were your nomal decal job, nothing to write home about.
Phew, getting there...

Uhm, right.... some HELP NEEDED

I did some work on the bases and got to a halt now as I ran out of a pot of Martian Ironearth. Another 4 pots ordered, but no idea when they'll ship.

The issue is that I primed the bases black, then sprayed some Khorne Red and finally some Troll Slayer Orange to get a nice variation and have a fancy colour below the cracks.
But the Ironearth dragged EVERYTHING under it so now I can see cork and greenstuff and putty and resin and hell and nightmares through EVERY SINGLE CRACK.

Should I have sealed everything first? Anyone has some experience with this?
At this point my only solution is to soak the bases in Agrax Earthshade and hope it'll cover properly - a test is underway.
I'll then brighten it up a bit with a Troll Slayer dry brush as that's the only orange I have on hand.

Second solution is to apply a second really thin coat of Ironearth over the more obvious culprits and leave the rest as is, and I much more like this idea.
Shouldn't be obvious from arm distance

Anyone else had this issue? Was the paint old and reacted wrong?
What should I do in the future?

This hasn’t happened to me before, but I would say that, in future, either don’t add other paints underneath (just slap the ironearth straight on), or seal it first. That’s just guessing though, so take it with a pinch of salt. Love the minis btw.

A quick update to show the bases,

Starting with 3 for the Ironstriders, the one with track marks has been so problematic as i (thought) i was out of green stuff so i made them out of an old batch of Oyumaru.
Even after priming and painting some colour on top, as per above post the Ironearth thick paint dragged all around and it looked horrible. Eventually i managed to find a bit of half cured, 6 year old green stuff that did the trick!

Now just waiting on some pots of Ironearth (hopefully delivered today) before i get a quick drybrush on them bases and drill for pinning.
Also need to apply a wash on the metallics

The blending is all airbrush work. Take some practice, but i wouldn't be able to achieve such a level just by wet blending. I'm still learning this technique, as i recently got a wet palette to help

Couldn't help myself and got Belisarius Cawl too, to add to the "team"

On the bases, i didn't want the metal to pop too much, at the end of the day it should all be covered in martian dust anyway so i think it turned out okish. What else would you find on martian soil, if not metal haha

And finally, a JUICY update!

Got all the Kastelans glued up. Tried to offer them the most dynamic pose given the relatively rigid stance (chopped up the pins on 2 legs so a bit more movement was offered)
But the main dynamism comes from the shoulder gun, head pose and most importantly, arms.

Front and back view for all of them!

Contemplating if i should apply a thin white edge highlighting on the sharp edges etc. Might look good, but not 100% decided yet. On the Yellow one it'd be virtually invisible so maybe i try on that, and if i don't fancy i just stop for the rest.
The plan would be to apply this to all Kastelans and Ironstriders (plenty of sharp panels there!)

I don't actually play...even though i started this ages ago hoping i'll get around to it, i've never.
Maybe one day, when i'll have a kid to share the hobby with lol.

Below the state Ironstriders were in. Sadly friends came along with a kid and he left his greasy marks everywhere so paint had difficulty sticking to anything. Also a pretty old pot, so very thin with a lot of pigment dried on the side.
What you see is after 3 layers of paint and i got a bit sick of painting all that - contemplating if i should mask all metal and just spray it all red. Might save time after all...

Dunno, don't really "feel it". Plus it would be a contrast to the rest of the red metal so not sure i'm up for that. I decided to mask, and did part of it already with blutack, the big parts will just be covered in masking tape.

Let's see how they come out!

At long last, the armies of The Omnissiah march!

Skipped over pics the last few boring steps. Long story short the airbrushed Ironstrier bodies came out perfect so all i had left was a bit of weathering on the feet, matte coat and finally a gloss touchup on all the lenses etc (sadly not visible in pictures).
No proper images to add to the Completed Log until i somehow source a proper photo camera and lights. Until then, these should do

Quick update after i managed to grab some pics of the Knight.

First off was a lot of filling and sanding, as i didn't want to have trench gaps between the smooth parts on legs etc.

Once that was done, basecoated all armour plates in Desert Tan and highlighted white.
All metallics also painted with the new Vallejo which looked amazing, only to be afterwards totally drenched in a wash of Seraphim Sephia.
Reason for that is i wanted final highlight to provide some shine, rather than do a normal wash and lose that element.

So there you go, last 2 images showing the head before and after a really heavy drybrush
More soon!

Well well well, as any self-respecting Chaos Knight, i went with the chainsword and the gauntled.

That left me with a cannon that i had no use for, except for some bits i could probably use for basing other kits.
BUT wait - why not use it to "base" this one?

After some fiddling, main cannon body turned upside-down, the holding part of the arm turned into two pipe exits, and some pewter cables to make any Magos happy,

LO AND BEHOLD.
And yes, that's the mark of chaos, trying to get some contact paper cut to size and mask the symbol on the top carapace.

Carapace update!

After being really unhappy with my freehand attempt at drawing the mark of chaos (the circle was a nightmare to get right!)
I ordered some contact paper and for those looking for a TLDR; i’m in love with that stuff!

I stripped the carapace and shoulder pads after a night sitting in Dettol, and painted it first red with orange highlights.
Then applied some gloss as it seems the contact paper aka mask leaves some residue behind on matte coatings.

And then went to town on cutting!
Sadly due to the small imperfections, spikes and cracks, the mask didn’t stick well enough and in places some paint can be seen where it shouldn’t. I plan on adding some better defined white/sand cracks and then cover with red the mistakes, though mixing paints to the exact tone on the arrows will be a pain. Oh well...

Hey, thanks for stopping by!

I absolutely agree! However some spots were excessive missprays so i covered as good as i could. It’s hard to see due to the gloss coat.

In the meanwhile i rectified a lot of that and added some more “cracks” on the sides, so it looks really chaos-y now

Time to show you all the second ongoing project, which is the 5 terminators and Ahriman from the Burning of Prospero box.

A quick overview of the steps below...
Basecoated gloss black then copper
Highlighted pale gold (a useless step, details below)
And sprayed candy red on top
And applied decals

Sadly i wasn't particularly happy with how thin the candy red was to show a contrast between the copper and gold areas
so what i decided to do was to spray them heavily again (imagine a really heavy wash). Disadvantage is that there's no more contrast, though for the 20 MK4 armour that will follow i might give a very thin coat of copper over black and have 10 copper and 10 gold to create some contrast between the units.

The massive advantage of what i did is that it dried thicker on the side of details, meaning it's pretty much like a wash!
Saving a lot of time and with no shine loss due to Nuln Oil - which i still plan on adding to particular areas, think pin wash etc.

Onto pics, then!

Quick update here on the Knight progress.

Slow due to an oil wash that had to partially dry for 2 days before i managed to apply a second coat.

Also, i've been toying with using the cannon / gun shield as an extra shoulder shield but as per last image, while it looks cool - it's simply too big and takes away from other points of the moder. Shame...

1st image shows a before and after - setting a panel wash and then dragging the mud around to give a bit of tonal variation to the entire plate, rather than applying a wash on the entire piece. Loving the restul.
2nd image shows a before and after of the second coat. Dragging the mud around on 1st step cleared it from a lot of places so a second coat was added to make it stand out.

Looks like a sore thumb atm but the effect should lose some of the impact once bronzes are painted.

Still can't decide what to do with the base... :(

Thanks all, it keeps me going!

A bit more work done and added some glowing green / yellow areas to break up the metal (especially on the torso).

Also, completed the base - was going after an effect that showed how bulky the knight was, with concrete broken around his feet but it turned out looking more as a platform than anything else. Not entirely happy, but overall colours etc work real well and don't take too much from the main "subject". Will add a bit of grass and barbed wire after i pin the feet.

More work done, slowly threading the bronze areas. Overall easy to paint, but maddening to paint the thin relief line between the broze areas and the armour panels. I’ve seen many ignore them, but at this scale they really bulk up the overall view.

The bronze was applied “in two thin coats” but i liked the darkness and shine of it so much i decided not to wash amd highlight, but leave as is.
Then managed to paint the oxidation on all the bronze as well.

And finally, pinned the feet to the base, laid a bit of barbed wire and done three times the weathering because the earth dust looked different on the panels, feet and flag. Got to a point where i’m happy.

Work work work!

The Knight took a bit of a backstage seat while it properly dries. Mishandled it while pinning and the armour panel oils are a horrible smudge so i cleaned it up and reapplied where possible to tie it all up.

In the meanwhile i started on Imperial Fists. 5 terminators from Betrayal at Calth and 20 Mk III marines from Burning of Prospero. Loadout won’t be legal as i’m doing 5 each so not a full 10 squad.
Also using the BaC character (removed head and using a termie one, helm-less heads in the Grimdark just won’t fly, mate! - pic below) and the Command Squad (not washed and not shown below) from Forgeworld + Phalanx upgrade and Rotor Cannons

I’m planning on painting them as below (yellow means standard scheme, black means veteran):

Terminator Sergeant - Black version
Terminator Squad - Yellow
Standard Bearers - Yellow
Phalanx Squad - Black w/ Yellow Shields
Heavy Rotor Squad - Yellow
Bolters Squad - Yellow
Heavy Weapons Squad - Mix as following
- 2x Heavy Bolter - Yellow
- 2x Melta - Yellow
- 1x Plasma - Black

Let’s see how this madness will go!

Also - anyone used and could recommend BLACK weathering powders? Can’t seem to find any!
Would like black bases to show a burned / scorched battlefield.

Wrapped up the Knight.

Not the best light or pics, but side shots should help show details a lot better.
A challenge and learned some new techniques!

A nifty thing rather than using magnets to be able to rotate the torso was to glue a bit of sprue over (see firstimage).
Got the idea while playing with poses, and this allows (as shown on 2nd and 3rd images) to pose rather dynamically by rotating and also pointing torso downwards or upwards.

Arms fully mobile except for distance from torso which was glued in place

Thanks both! I’m pondering if to add a mix of lahmian and ardcoat to the bronze areas to bring back a bit of the shine on the Knight. Thoughts?

Other than that, spent the week building the Imperial Fists. And filling gaps on backpacks, not anfun thing for 15 units. All i need is an extra flamer that i should get in the post any day now to complete the terminators. I opted for certain loadouts based on what i liked most so shoukd be a fancy, diverse team at the end ha

Now waiting on good weather so i can spray a thin coat of auto primer that i found great for resin, and then i’ll move to the airbrush primer etc.

Good morning, Brother Adepts!

A weird post as i've gone through a bit of work with the Imperial Fists, but also decided to keep this single work log - so after the below update on Dorn's Sons, i'll copy-paste the first post of the Death Guard log as well;
This will keep going, i'll obviously jump over Death Guard posts related to unboxing, etc - so just painting stuff - until i move all the posts here. It will obviously culminate with ... some NEW DEATH GUARD! I have 5 Grave Warden Terminators that i basecoated ages ago and never got to finish. And maybe a Leviathan to add to the fun.

So, onto the Fists!

After basecoating all the (yellow) models Desert Tan and all the (black) models Black, i sprayed the yellow ones with Mud Brown for shadows, Rust for deeper (middle of) shadows, and then White for highlights.
Shown below some overall work, with a close up on terminators. Quite time consuming and i learned a lot about the new compressor, pressures, etc - i generally don't do such close and controller work, so something new!

For all black models, after the black basecoat dried i went to town on a heavy Mechanicus Grey drybrush, then soaked all with Nuln Oil until it was just an off-black. Many of hte previous highlights were lost so i ended up highlighting some areas with fine lines of grey, then another coat of Nuln Oil to tie it all together. No images of the completed work yet.

Feast yer eyes!

And now, the DEATH GUARD!

A quick snap of all the resin goodies, after washing them and then work on bases; original posts below

All bits cleaned, some of them still left on the casting blocks as i feel those will be easier to paint. I will paint the majority of parts before gluing the entire figure

Next, bases. I decided to ditch the resin casts as go with my own. I chose a rocky dark grey, to contrast with the Death Guards colours.
Grass turfs will be added in the end, after the model is pinned and the base is sealed with varnish.

Lastly, the terminator bases are complete (again, without grass turfs). I am thinking to add some water effects pouring from the ends of the pipes, maybe mixed with some green and a bit of yellow. In hindsight, a second coat of grey drybrushed on the outer edges won't harm...

Not a lot of work going on sadly, thanks to the lovely weather.
Completed all the 25mm bases, and did some work on two 40mm objective markers.
There's still some stuff to be added, but at least THEY BLINK!

ANOTHER ONE FROM THE BOWELS OF DEATH GUARD HISTORY

2 posts pasted today to keep it short - the test figure complete (I like to think it's Garro)
And a bit of work on whites, greens and pigments for paint flaking

Test model complete, Garro of the 7th Company
Took me around 9-10 hours to finish him, obviously the rest of the army won't be as detailed as him.

Sadly i lost my camera's card so the pictures taken by phone should do for now, anyway quite ok to get an idea

Cheers!

Hello Dakka !

Small update going here with Mortarion's sons
Finally some good weather (read: a few hours) that allowed me to basecoat all the parts. I also managed to paint white about 1/2 of the parts, before the rattlecan decided to get empty.

Some pigments were applied to create heavy damage and rusted armour, and will benefit from a second thin coat of white, and then will be rubbed with a toothbrush to expose the pigments again.

I also managed to airbrush the shoulderpads, flag and boarding shields, and the only remaining parts are the Warden's pads.

And after removing the masks.

Some touchup will be required, but that should go easy before damage application
And now, again waiting for some sun

Thanks for looking!
Alex

A quick update showing progress on the Imperial Fists;

I have coated all in yellow, first picture shows how it looks after 3 layes (left) and 2 layers (right). Paint was still wet so a bit too shiny on the left side, but shows well enough how the shadows got toned down
Same with the shoulder pads, but reversed so 2 layers left, 3 layers right

Also an image of the black highlighted units before adding the Nuln Oil wash.

All arms have been now removed, put on toothpicks and awaiting the oil washes.
This will be time consuming...

My word you are a busy dude!

The knights are simply mind blowing; great attention to detail and some super impressive results. Really good stuff.

The yellow on the fists has come out really nicely! I have never seen this method before so was really interesting to follow the steps.

I also love the blinking objective markers - super cool and fun idea

Can't wait for more 8-)

Thanks both, much appreciated!
@tzurk, i'm moving ahead slowly but there's not much at this point. The wash (which can be seen below), then painting colours each at a time, so i'd say the base is pretty much done. Give it a try, i'd say it would work with any colour as long as the final one (yellow in this case) is semi-transparent or you manage to thin it down a lot

A bit of extra work done on the bodies, after shoulder pads were washed.
In the first image below you can see a pre-wash, post-wash and post-cleanup combo .

Then below, shoulder pads all done and decals applied, so i decided to cover all with liquid masking to spray the blacks alongside a lighter gray highlight. It is pretty visible so i decided to tone it down with nuln oil.

And finally, last picture showing the shoulder pads after removing of some masks. There's been a bit of touchup required (either adding more black, or scraping it with a toothpick where the masking ran a bit wild).
And that's pretty much all for now!

Next posts will probably be 2-3 re-postings of Death Guard while i keep washing, letting dry and cleaning up the arms, some torsos, and all helmets. Really monotonous and repetitive task!

So, as mentioned before, some more old Death Guard posts to fill the time while i wash and clean the Fists

Finally a proper update.

As you can see from all the pictures below, there’s a lot of work on pretty much everything, but all of them still need more
The closest to done are the shoulderpads, which have the colour degradation done will only get one more layer of battle damage once the entire figure is assembled.

Detailed shoulderpads for Assault squad

Plain shoulderpads with decals applied, for Breacher squad

Command squad shoulderpads, standard

Legs, torsos and stuff

Next, more work done on the bases.
Completed 2 objective markers

And pretty much done the bases for the Contemptors and Deredeo. Again, no grass will be added until all is sealed first
Contemptor 1

Contemptor 2

Deredeo – note that the top part and the pipe are not glued in place yet, to allow for minor adjustments based on the feet position.

That’s pretty much all for today.
New updates… “soon”.
Thanks for looking, comments and especially critics are welcomed

Some customisation work on the Deredo.
I used some rivet strips from Zinge, the colour difference should be enough to see what was added where

Head and kneeguards:

Top legs, right bottom leg:

And finally, the hull:

I have added a Reaver air intake, not sure if i like it, and if it should stay. Any inputs?

Still some planned work, mainly a brass Death Guard logo on the left bottom leg, as well as a cable going on the left side of the head guard and into it somehow. Plus a greenstuff XIV to mirror the position on the Contemptor.

As usual, thanks for looking!
Alex over

Another historical post from the bowels of the Death Guard, while i slowly work my arse through panel lining the Fists
Not one, not even two, but THREE posts today to speed up the transfer to current thread and show some real progress.

Small update on the Deredeo. This is what I believed will be the final state of customisation, however I became unhappy with the XIV marking so I peeled it off and sanded the area. Planning on a different sculpt, same texture, but a better looking triangular base shape to fit the space on the hull

Particularly happy with how the pipe ended, it’s twisted wire so a few gaps appeared but should look fine after painting.

Any thoughts ?

Trying to keep up at a steady rate, however i’m a quite slow painter. Or a fast one with very little time

One more quick update. Heads for the breacher squad are done. I haven’t used the breacher version, but the standard one as I liked it a bit more
I might use those if I get any MK II kits, as I don’t like their helmets that much

And finally, torsos. A few more decals were applied and weathered on the Assault squad.
All battle damaged, and made me think I went a bit heavy on the bronze weathering. But then again, they’re the Death Guard! Weathering galore, then.

The only step left for torsos and heads at the moment is to apply a bit of orange rust powder to the larger damaged areas and seal them in.
Progress is also made on the guns.

I have changed a bit the loadout; I will add 2 flamers (the Sternguard kit ones) to the breacher squad instead of the ones available in the kit. In the end, this Legion can make better use of it…
Also, the breacher sergeant will get a power fist instead of the bolter, while the assault sergeant will get a power fist and a plasma pistol

Morning (or evening!) Dakka

Finally some proper modelling to show. In spite of sunny weather, perfect for BBQs and other stuff.
The Assault squad has been pinned to bases, torsos and both arms have been glued as well.
The only thing left to paint is on their right (trigger) hand, the black trigger cover and grip bottom.

I also worked a bit more on the damaged areas, and added a final layer of MIG orange rust that was sealed under a bit of Testors.
Here’s a close up of all the parts that got the treatment, both from Assault and Breacher squads.

Next planned action? Green …

Finally a proper update on the Fists. They are getting farther and farther away from the clean look they started on, and i think they'll look lovely muddy, dragged through the pits of the Heresy.
Of course, the MK III plate lends itself well to a dirty scheme due to all the bitz and bobz where dirt/grime can accumulate, such as the overlapping armour.
That said, YELLOW indeed is the colour of horror and nightmares :|. We'll see if i manage to paint a clean character later down the line!

To start business, we've got the shoulder pads nearly done, just awaiting a dark grey pinwash on the black areas.
Also the shields awaiting same treatment

Next, we have gold areas on terminators blocked black, then painted VGC Glorious Gold, washed Seprahim Sephia to offer more contrast to the yellow, then highlighted VMC Polished Gold as i'm a strong opposer of highlighting gold with Silver :|.

And finally, a close up showing how heavy i went on the wash/dirt/grime around panels.

I'm now working on the Terminator arms, blocked black all leather areas and 2x flamers, once these are done i'll be able to start edge highlighting the yellow
Still experimenting with the heads, i'd like to airbrush the glow on each of them but they're so small i'm not sure which way to go lol.
Any feedback or suggestions, welcome as usual.

Thanks for looking!

Some seriously good work on these Heresy era marines. The yellow in particular on those fists is magnificent. Always preferred the grittier, more realistic look of the HH series marines.

Thanks mate, i generally prefer the grittier looks too, but i will try some Primaris Imperial Fists too, and for those i want a cleaner look. See how it goes!

Update on the work below, i managed to paint all the leather areas and did some more gold i forgot i had

The bright light doesn't really do justice to the leather, it's the first i painted to this level after Santa gifted me (read: I bought myself) a Vallejo Game Colour 76 box set .
Hopefully a darker setup for the completed work will show it better, but i think the zoomed in image shows it pretty cool.

Also, a dry fit of the Terminator captain, with all the shiny gold and fancy red cape. Getting the decal to stick to that shape was a mighty pain!

Next step is to block the flamers and claws, then paint metallic and that will get me pretty close to finishing the terminators as i've focused on these lately.

Time for not one, not two, but three Death Guard historical posts!
In the 1st post the Grave Warden arms can also be seen, the ones i aim to finish (to re-start?!) soon!

New update!

Assault Squad nea...
Wait. I promissed thou more green. So green shall thou receiveth...

(With a few obvious touch-ups required)

A quick view of the Aiolos launcher

And now... Ladies and gentlemen, the assault squad near completion!
Still needs a few decals on the vexilla, then varnish, grass and some barbed wire on a few bases

And a quick back view of the vox, commander and vexilla

Work nearly completed on the shields

Front is done 100%, just a bit of weathering/grime on the back, another coat of varnish and i can call it a day

Really went to town on the weathering side. But hey, i had to make up for the not-so-badly-damaged armour that the squad has
I could say i'm in love with the way they turned out, i plan on using the same techniques on the dreads as well

Anyone who would vote against that much weathering??

Meanwhile, today i managed to put in some work on the bodies. I glued the right hands to the torsos, then the guns. Shields were blutak'd in place as i want to seal the figure under some varnish and the shield will block a lot.
A bit fiddly, but was happy with the final result.

Also done with the dirt and corrosion on the legs, and pinned to the bases. Much wow!

Then DISASTER struck. I glued the torsos to the legs, and when checking how they'd look with the shield on...surpise! It wasn't fitting, but was instead hitting the leg.

So i went back to breaking, fixing, testing... And about an hour later they were finally done
Phew. Close call

Full squad view

And another historical copy-paste post, this time it's a mix of posts in such an order that will ensure some continuity;
At the time, due to bad weather not allowing me to spray outside, i worked on a multitude of things at the same time, so lookity-look!

Let's start with he lovely Deredeo Dreadnought

A bit more work done here.
I decided to take a break from the Command Squad and move onto the Deredeo for a bit of variation.

First, more bitz that will have heavy rust on them:

Working on one part at a time, and started with the Aiolos launcher.
Main colours laid down, wash applied

And after a bit of more work.
The targeter lens was my first attempt at such a painting method, and i feel it ended up cool. Not the same as painting small lights, gems or eyes, which are much simpler/ugly due to size

Aiolos all done, behold its beauty. Sadly the front bit containing the missiles has a quite bad fit on the bottom. I couldn’t test fit it as it went in quite difficult and I was worried I won’t be able to pull it out again.

After a bit of gluing, I was able to keep the parts in place and still move it up/down. However the small amount and small contact zone broke soon so at the moment I’m thinking of pinning it somehow, so it can still be moved, if needed (for fun, not that someone would actually NEED to move it). Nice part is that the fit is so firm that they sit in quite tight without any glue added.

Lo and behold

Aside from that a bit more work on the Deredo, painted the studs and applied some small patches of Palid Wych Flesh to create a small contrast when the wash is applied.

Back on the Deredeo, i decided to magnetise the arms, in case they'll release something even cooler than the cannonade

Work was done on the legs, and they're very close to being done. Some more battle damage, a dirt wash and some powders.
On second thoughts, i don't like the green bit on the back so much, i should work a bit more on the blending

And a quick overview, still far from done, but good to get an impression

And finish with a lovely Drop Pod that at the time benefitted of the extra armour panels created by Chapterhouse studios (which i miss, damn you GW Lawyers!)

Of course I had to overshadow it. Console was primed black and painted with Alclad Chrome, and after some more work I can declare it complete.

Finally more work done. And a lot of pictures to show it!
I've been jumping between the Deredo and drop pod lately, to get some variation. Let's start with the pod, where a bit more work was done on the central console, to create the impression of lighting

Also work done on the doors. I was planning to magnetise them, but seems i can get a good enough fit with no need of magnets.
Still in a fairly incipient phase, sadly the hazard stripes seem to differ a bit from door to door. Guess i can live with it anyway

And a quick overview of where i'm standing now

That said, doooooors opened:

…and closed:

What can I say, the “heresy shields” are cool, shame they aren’t exactly the correct size. Also not a consistent thickness, and when sides perfectly aligned, the window was anything but.

Hey all, finally some update on the FISTS!

The Terminators are all but ready, i need to seal the rust streaks and then apply a 2nd layer of streaks to give it a bit of pop, then i'll show those.
Black powder weathering and basing will be done once all minis are completed so i can do that in a batch.

Moving on, i wasn't happy with the edge highlight i've done on the termies (lines a biiiiiit too thick) so i decided for the rest of the figures i'll do a general drybrush. The Hexos Palesun is a bit dry and made the entire job an ordeal, but finally past it and i like the results! Most obvious on the back of it

Moving on, painted all the metallic areas, including the ammo can on the backpack, which i wasn't planning initially, but i do feel it adds a lot of contrast

I aslo felt the guns were a bit barren, so i decided to add a yellow line to all, so below a quick look at the masking job and the end result after spraying - so i could get a nice transition.
I sadly realised too late that i should probably have painted the chainswords on both sides, so i might have to do that later. Luckily the swords were for the light assault marines, and i've only done the heavies.

And finally, a quick look to offer some overall feel, once the black trim was done. The yellow in the last 2 images turned out too bright, but i couldn't make it look better. The group pic should give a good idea

Finally, all this work was done just for the rotor squad. I've got a grey pin wash planned for the black areas, then a bit of grey edge highlight, some battle damage and rust streaks, and then i can move forward to the next 5.
I needed a bit of gluing and variation so keep me interested so that's why i preffered to work in small batches of 5 for now.

Hopefully another update soon!
As usual, thanks for stopping by

So…. Disaster struck

Due to my own stupidity, i have submerged the models in hot water to bend the ammo belts, before the matter coat got fully cured probably.
The result below. Any idea how this could get fixed? I tried applying matte and gloss coats to different panels, but it seems it won’t help. Gloss makes it go away until it dries, and then turns white again. Hope someone has some suggestions…before i go mad

Ack! Usually the solution is gloss - but that's to fix regular matte application gone bad, not submerging wet matte in hot water! I hope someone can suggest a workable fix. Barring that, I might try adding multiple layers of gloss (apply, dry, repeat) - maybe test on the base?

"Deus est Machina" - ciuncky's painting blog - IMPERIAL FISTS & DEATH GUARD historical re-posts 30k @ 2021/02/18 13:59:23

Post by: ciuncky

Thanks @ Arakasi, sadly it seems gloss didn't work; i ran to a shop trying to find Pledge Klear, but they were out of stock as well; luckily, only 2 models were damaged that bad, i suspect i put those in first, when the water was hot enough to break through the little cure time that passed.

The other 3 were a bit better, so i decided to just strip the clear coat; armed with large and medium drybrushes and a lot of Vallejo Paint Thinner i managed to remove it pretty well, there are still a few remnants on severe 2 units but it's mainly on the back leg armour and most visible on the panel wash, so i can live with it.

Naturally, i went through a bit of the weathering underneath it, as well as black trims, so i've had to redo those but it's all dry now and i applied another coat of matte, so it's pretty much done now just waiting for bases and weathering powders on the feet.

Lesson learned, pictures soon!

Not much going on at the moment on the Fists front; black trims, metal areas painted. Really, more of the above, so probably best time to do another Death Guard historical post!

Some battle damage was added, the cables were heated and twisted to the correct angle and now it's pretty much standing on his own power core. And magnets, for that matter.

The guns are pretty much done, just a bit of red needs to be added to the front nozzles and some black around the heat exhausts

As i said, the pod also got some attention. Doors are pretty much done at this moment

And all in place. Entry damaged was added with a very dark grey and then a layer of black on the bottom half

Worked on a base for the drop-pod. It will sit in place via magnets. Interestingly, it fits perfectly on the new 130mm round bases that GW released, so i'll need to stick one under all the cork

Also, more damage, some pin washing and oxidising added to the Deredeo. Short of working on the eye lenses, it's pretty much done

Continued work on the command squad.
First, the standard - really happy to see the text is readable. Sadly i wasn't able to get rid of those thick margins around. Thinking of using a cotton bud dipped in nail polish, but a bit risky...

And the rest of the work

Thanks for looking!

Quick update on the under-works 6 Fists.

Bitz and pieces, trims painted black, metal parts painted either Exhaust Manifold or Jet Exhaust to provide a bit of contrast, washed and the sorts.
Tried adding 3-4 Nuln Oil washes to the gun barrels and mags to offer a bit of contrast and look like it's a different type of metal. I think i need to get some sort of Gunmetal paint to help with that

Bodies of said units, with black trims in place, also the Standard Bearer and the fine red trim it got

And a close-up of the backpacks

And finally, Commander of these folks. Torso is not glued, and due to bluetac will look too high but ignore that; it also misses the chainsword/pistol/ammo pouches. I have one of each for the 5 man squad, need to decide what to add. Probably swords and pouches, and give the pistols to the Phalanx squad to have a bit of variation and break up all the black there.

It's ALMOST like a spinning GIF lol.
Thoughts, comments, suggestions always welcome.

Quick update here as the bolters squad was done and i started work on the Phalanx. I'll post some images of all completed figures soon, and then proper ones after i do the bases.

So, without further ado, the banner

The axes, with a nice electric blue airbrushed transition

The shields, BEFORE scratches and rust was added

... and AFTER

And an example of one of the 5 black Phalanx Warders, after gold trim was done (present on just 3 of them) and rust and armour scratched added;
I have to say, as strange as the MK III legs mixed with MK IV torsos look, it actually grew up on me a lot, and it looks really good and bulky after the shields are added;

Pretty much all bits are done, a bit of Nuln Oil left to add on backpacks and then start cutting the arms glue points to get better poses if i don't like standard ones.
Should be done in a day

Cheerio!

Thanks man, as a matter of fact i did snap some pics today.
The Phalanx is not fully done, i need to apply a nuln oil wash on metallic areas and possibly drybrush the cables on the axes as they look dull.
But all pieces are glued in place, it sure was a nightmare due to the mix of Mk III and IV. Happy to have that part out of the way lol;

Also, eagle-eyed hobbists will notice that 2 shieds / arms are not in the original position, i didn't really like the dynamic of the pose as Mk III legs are more static or advancing/striding, opposed to Mk IV which seem to be running. Took me the better part of an hour to get those 2 in a position i liked haha.

KIND REMINDER TO THOSE WHO DIDN'T FOLLOW ALONG - i paint for pleasure, so these are not battlefield-legal squads (either mixed weapons, or 5 instead of 10-man squads). I simply built them the way i think they look best.
So, here we go!

Terminators:

Rotor Canon front & back

Bolters front & back

Phalanx Warders front, side (Shields) & back

Terminator Captain and Standard Bearer front, side & back

Once the final touches are added to the Phalanx squad, i'll start on the final 6 figures (5 special weapons and the 2nd dude from the Imperial Fists Command)
Those should take a bit longer opposed to the Phalax as there's more painting to do, and once complete i'll get on a batch base building which i can't wait

Wow, they turned out spectacularly well! What do you plan to do for the basing?

Cheers man, yeah they turned out pretty decent and i'm happy with the techniques i learned / got to try out.
They're not perfect, but i don't pretend to be a Golder Daemon painter so ...

Re: bases, i plan on some ruined city scape, post-bombardment/Exterminatus. So everything will be burned, blacketc. A bit of cork, some pipes, some bricks, some wire and cogs.
And then black soot to weather the lower part of the legs for all the minis, but will do that at the very end before i pin them in place, and then seal all under the (6th i think, and) final coat of matte.

Sounds like an excellent plan.

Hi all,

A bit of a quite time as all that happened with the last few units was stuff i showed before, a bit of drubryshing, a bit of oils, stuff like that.
They are all complete now, so i've got to the next point, which was to build 28 bases!

A quick dryfit of the 6x 40mm ones

An overview of all 28, after ironcrust dried and cracked nicely

And then all of it primed black...

...drybrushed Mechanicus Standard Grey...

...further drybrushed Pallid Wych Flesh...

...washed with Nuln Oil...

...and finally powdered with Soot Black. The result isn't equally visible on all figures as when sealing them it sort of dissolved in areas i sprayed too heavily.
The effect is worth it though so i decided not to reapply powders as it offers a nice variation across the "board".
All sealed under Vallejo Matte and added some scorched tufts from Army Painter.

With that sorted, the Imperial Fists are done!
I've ordered a photo tent so next post will be on the Completed Log thread and i'll include the Chaos Knight Rampager as well as the Mechanicus i've finished.
Next update here will also show my next project! I picked up a Kill Team manual and will go with a Mechanicus force and some terrain. Stay tuned!

As always, thanks for spending some time here!

Really amazing and inspirational work on the Horus Heresy armies. You are doing the setting proud. Both the Deathguard and the Fists look fantastic.
