What are your current goals in life? @ 2015/11/09 20:19:21

Post by: The Wise Dane

The title. I've always wanted to hear what everyone are going for in their lives; it's good for perspective

I know my goal is to get a smaller parttime job, and work to get a Youtube channel going - I mean, if everybody else can do it, why shouldn't I? More personally, I hope to find me some close friends. Yeah I know. Many of my past friends have either moved on or we've fallen out for several good reasons. I still a worthwhile goal to go for.

Are you going for something specific in your life, or are you more just surviving right now?

Sounds like another "feel good" kinda thread that can lead to some awesome discussions from people who have already been through "your goal" and might be able to offer advice. As such, mods, please don't lock as "blog territory" unless it gets out of hand.

Honestly, my biggest goal is meeting the right girl, settling down and raising a family, and working my way out from the crippling garbage that is student loan hell. I could have had traveling the country as a goal, but that has been met by work. List of places people need to visit:
Burlington, VT
Portland and Astoria, OR
Flagstaff, AR

Go for the views. If you want to add beer as a reason, toss Flagstaff and add Michigan. Maybe Flint. Not Detroit.

For the longest time one of my major goals was to write a book for publication and that goal is being achieved currently, so the next item on my list was to get married.

My SO and I have been living together for three years now and were planning on getting married in 2015, but some job set-backs put marriage on the back burner. 2016 is looking promising, though. We both potentially have new positions with our employers that will enable us to really start a life together. We should know after the holidays if those position and title changes go through and then its off to marriage bliss ( )!

Ultimately I'd like to move us out of Los Angeles and into an area where I can work from home and she can be close to a hospital that treats her well.

I really enjoyed my grad program. I went in right after finishing my undergrad degree, but I was making up for the time I lost farting around in community college. If you haven't had a break from school since leaving high school I definitely recommend taking a year or two off between programs. It will help recharge your batteries, and chances are you'll find that the "decent" job you were hoping for with your BA doesn't exist, making that decision to go for a masters even easier.

For this, and any future thread along these lines... Please just hit the yellow triangle if you think a thread might get out of hand, rather than posting a comment if you think the thread is silly.

Along these same lines, I've removed the joke image pic from a different post above... just move on if you're not interested in the thread, guys - do not derail it with jokes!

Thank you...

I really like this post idea, and would like to hear others' responses. Sometimes the new people's entries are too short to get a sense of their lives of are ignored.
For me, I am pretty happy where I am at. I teach English. In that vein we can do mostly what we want as far as content as long as students are leaning how to analyze texts. I do film studies. It offers nearly unlimited essay topic ideas and analyses. I don't really want, nor think it would be feasible to get my PH.D. at this times considering the college environment and my location. I look forward to keep on trucking. Next s jester I am opening a new class that looks at apocalyptic literature. Fun stuff.

Immediate: Clean up my diet, work out a bit more. Be less gross in general.
Short Term: Meet someone nice, travel a bit.
Long Term: Have a family, house, maybe an animal or two.
Final: Die, I guess. Not much choice in the matter. If anyone knows about any alternatives let me know, still not happy with this one.

For myself - tonight, finish packing the final ModCube orders . It's going to be a late night!
For the end of this year - Get the webstore launched, finish a renovation project with our church, and enjoy our daughter's first Christmas!
For next year - Get 3rd Dimension Gear's next product ready for market... it's ambitious, but I'm extremely excited about it

Well I recently had to move to take care of family. Good part us I like the state I moved too. Bad part is my job isn't out here. My background experience is limited to one field and that field isn't where I'm at.

So right now finding any job is good. Then I'm going to look into working for uncle Sam again.

Some of my goals feel like somewhat generic goals:

- always try to become a better husband
- be the best father I can be
- be a resource and asset to my community

My most "concrete" goals would be
-lose 30 more lbs
- finish my Master's degree
- commission into the Public Health Service

God, I'd kill to lose 30lbs. I'm only like 190 now, but I'd be ridiculously happy at 160. I don't overeat, I love to cook and usually make healthy stuff, or at least reasonably, and I've cut sugar and cream from coffee. But regular exercise is a problem. If I could do that, I'd hit the 30 easy. But I hate the gym. And running just to run.

I would like to be a bus driver. I need to get my license first, then hold it fit one or two years, so in the intermediate any job to keep me afloat would be great.
I live in the countryside where the buses spend miles between towns, and the traffic is nowhere near as severe as cities, so travelling on buses and helping people would be really nice.

My other goal was to write an RPG - I'd hit pretty far, but did it on an Android laptop, and the device crashed, wiping three years of progress. Id never backed it up. Written it on trips, train rides, hospital visits and long waits. Trying again from scratch just feels empty. Some day.
Other than that, owning a dog, running a pub in my retirement, and maybe fostering a kid.

Probably sound pretty unambitious, but I am just happy to be alive. Anything beyond that is sugar on the donut.

I need to find a new job. I currently work at a state prison for the last 12 years and after suffering my second concussion at work from being assaulted enough is enough. Tired of breaking up fights, being spit on, dealing with riots, being bitten, having to work ever weekend, swing shift, working ever holiday, ect ect... It by far the worst job I have ever had. Applied for some federal jobs and have applied for other state jobs.. So the goal for 2016 is to find a new job.

20 year wiener dog crime spree. Your local grocery store manager will know its going to be a bad day when he hears the Horn of Shrill Barking, and my battle cart, pulled by a dozen wiener dogs (he may see it coming for awhile, wiener dogs are not known for speed...). Give us all your steaks and chips and no one gets hurt! Except you cat lover!

What about if my cat is quite happy to let dogs take the food, and will quite probably hold the door open?

...My cat is not like other cats. My cat ate a raw tomato and half a kilo of flapjacks the other day. I'd say I worry, but quite honestly he seems content.

Thinking again on life goals... I published a book, started a business, travelled to a bunch of countries, and I'd say those are all things that pushed me to go on further. They're not ends, they're steps. I hope that once I get some if my to-do list done, that leads me further and I stay busy. Maybe that's a goal in itself.

I always wanted to be an actor, or do something drama-wise, but I heard it would be difficult to find a job there, and the pay isn't very good. If I can get into a stable financial situation, finding some way to volunteer at a theater would be nice.

I've also wanted to make a cosplay out of one of my models, a converted four armed daemon prince, but still keeping the size.

For the h-h-hobby, I have a pair of Warhounds I'd really like to get finished.

Or at least started.

In my professional life, I'd like to finish my bachelors in CIS. I had about a year left when I dropped out. I got my dream job about 6 months ago, and not having a degree was a hurdle; and it's going to really hurt my career growth here. I was really only able to squeak in the door because I interview pretty well, I'm pretty good at what I do, and I knew some people.

In my personal life, I'd like to try and lose some weight, which I am physically well capable of doing - I've lost substantial weight when I applied myself - but I stopped applying myself.

I'd also like to try and be more of a positive influence on Dakka. I've become sort of a jaded, adversarial conflict-craving jerk who doesn't actually do almost anything in the h--h-hobby anymore and I'd like to try and fix at least one side of that equation. Unfortunately I do revert to my base instincts pretty readily. It's a struggle.

Pretty much all of my goals are thwarted by low willpower; so if anyone has any advice, I'm all ears.

I have many goals in life, here they are in no particular order:
Find the right woman for me and marry her, living a long and happy life together and having wonderful children.
Improve my relationship with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Get a much better job than my current one (I work at Walmart even though I have a BS in Mechanical Engineering, but the job market around here is kind of tough, especially if you don't own a car!)
Paint all my 40k stuff to a reasonable standard.
Travel to and win a major 40k tournament (maybe not win my first one of course, but eventually win one!)
See the ocean (I'm 28 and have never been to the coast; largest body of water I've ever seen was Lake Michigan when I was, like, 8). I live in Missouri, perhaps the most landlocked state in the U.S., so maybe that's why it hasn't happened yet...
Travel to a foreign nation (just about anywhere would be good).
Go to a NASCAR race (any Sprint Cup race would be fine).
Lose weight. I'm over 300 lbs. right now, but it's hard for me to lose weight even though I work out as I tend to eat a lot (way too much junk food ).
Live to be over 100 years old. Guess I'd better see about losing the weight if I want to make this one happen!

Probably happens when you have most of your life together, have a decent wife/husband, a house, an okay career and you're stuck there wondering what you should do with your life so you go "feth it, let's have a kid or 2". This is just pure conjecture on my part as I don't have any kids (at

least that I'm aware of).

I know exactly what you mean.

I'm technically now in my late 30s, I have a wife and two kids and a job, and I'm really rudderless. My goals are pretty much to get through life with a minimum of aggro, and have the odd bit of time here and there to myself to do things like painting models. Feels a bit sad when I stop to think about it...

For me, the decision to have kids was a matter of arrogance and immortality.

I've seen a lot of people in my time, and I think I'm pretty awesome compared to many of them. Now I've certainly met folks better than me, but none better than my wife. And I do think the world needs more people like us. So, we took matters into our own hands and parts beyond and created some little ones to increase the number of people out there like us. That's where the arrogance comes in.

The immortality comes in genetically, of course. Those whipper snappers look like me and my wife, and will create a new generation that also bears similarities to us- but it goes deeper than that. Every minute we spend with them, every story we introduce them to makes them more like us, and passes on the legacy of our personalities. My boys will tell some of the same terrible jokes to their kids, teach them to pee in a toilet by bombing battleships, and in general just perpetuate me long after I'm gone. It's a very cool feeling, seeing yourself blended with the person you love, and reflected from someone that looks very, very similar to you.

As you probably guessed, raising my boys is my primary goal right now- writing and publishing a novel is the secondary.

I'm not even into guns, but I do enjoy watching this channel. Mr Hickok has a very dry sense of humour, which is a plus in my book.

- Battle my negativity much more, hoping for the best and expecting the worst and getting it, leads to thinking people are stupid, which universally they are not.
- Moved into a very large new house, want to set up a proper man cave in basement: overwhelmed by my collection of stuff, stupid amount of boxes.
- See more of my friends and nice acquaintances before they die, move or drift away (while I deal with said boxes).
- Try to persuade my pre-teens their dad is not a moron and knows stuff... only happens when things break or went very badly for them.
- Try to convince mother in law that she moved in with us, not the other way around, that I can do stuff without her direction and yes, I survived quite well without her.

But enough with my first world challenges:

-I want to be more mindful and present: I am finding a lot to learn and enjoy when people really realize you are listening to them.
- Smell the roses more: my wife is too willing to overbook things, I am now booking "non-structured activities" on the calendar: confuses her to no end but things get done, just not to the "list".
- Figure out a pet charity, I contributed to a few, would like to invest more time using my skill sets.

Good stuff everyone else.
The fornication with multiple women bit I no longer have available but I applaud your efforts!

Why does everyone want to have kids ? This is something I struggle to understand.
In my case, I always wanted to be a teacher, and teach kids a subject they were passionate about (art, geography, something you choose to pursue). But after watching it nearly kill everyone that I knew in the profession, including my mother, I realised that i wasn't cut out to be a fully responsible teacher, and do a conscientious job of it. it would kill me as well.
So I thought, hey, maybe I could though, help raise a kid that wanted a family, and support them go through education, and give them a place to be. And if they don't like school, that's fine. We'll find something they do like. Even if it's something I don't know gak about, I'll find someone who does.

I can't personally have kids of my own due to a condition I'd pass down, but even before that I knew that, adoption was something I decided to do when I had a stable home. Not as a second chance, but because why the feth not?

(Those who can't teach, adopt? )

I look at it more as investing in a future and trying to make it a little better place with some conscientiously raised kids who will be become adults.
It also would suck to grow old and have everyone die around you and have no-one who cares about you much remaining.
It IS a very unselfish act to decide to raise children unless you look at them as future servants which would test the patience sorely if that was the main reason.
Having children is a biological imperative, many traits and features live-on in that strange little being you raise.

Happiness is pretty much the goal.

How to get a keep being happy is the true challenge.
Freaky, learning, inquisitive, swaggering children certainly give a lot of funny material.

Even funnier when daddy tries to teach them a game (X-wing lately) and the unholy chaos ensues.

Why do you care so much what "society" thinks? How can society think something? It is not some unified thing. Do you need validation from others for every choice you make?

Society can very much "think" something. And very much yes, the older you get, the longer you go without kids, you get looked down on for not having kids.
And if we didnt think we care what society thinks, Why arent you running around naked right now? or wearing assless chaps?

Actually the massive pressure comes from our biological nature of living beings. I guess. I don't feel this pressure, though.

And what if we both think society thinks something different? How do we know which is right? Just go with your feelings? Society is so diverse it's impossible for there to be one unified thing. It's culture-, family-, surroundings-, social circle-dependent. And you are free to ignore any of it that doesn't work for you. In fact, I'd strongly encourage you to.

I can see holidays in the Frazzled house now..

Boy is home from school, opens up boxes lovingly wrapped in beautiful, Christmassy themed paper (not plain red, cuz, y'know it ain't christmas) to reveal... a Costco sized case of condoms.

I will say, in my own experience, kids are both the best thing and worst thing to happen, all at the same time. When it was just Mrs. Ferrae and I, things were pretty easy, our biggest worries were what kind of booze we wanted to buy and whether the local liquor store would have it in stock. Playing 40k, video games or whatever else we wanted was easy, no worries.

Now, there are seriously a lot more "worries" to be had. Making job/career choices is no longer as simple as, "where would we want to go next?" Every noise in the night is profoundly different. Sleeping in is a distant memory. Watching "favorite" tv shows or movies must be planned somewhat well in advance.

On Topic: current goals for me, graduate with my BA in May of 17, follow with my Masters in 18 and hopefully straight into full time work (though more likely I'll be subbing for a bit first)

-Get job teaching in high school, hopefully doing some assistant coaching as well.
-Work to help expand youth rugby in my area.

-Convince wife to get an army job where she can move to New Zealand, and take us.

-Vacation or move to NZ

It gets better. They will become decent almost humans.

Then they will become 14. In the night someone will come in, steal your child, and replace it with a doppleganger, a snarky, moody, know it all lazy ass doppleganger. During this period its best to have pictures of them when they were young and cute on the refrigerator. It will make the terrible two's look like fun at the park.

Then they become 17 and start to become human again. By 18 they are awesome, great to be with, fun conversationalists, its really great.
And then they leave.

A fair amount. I have one living the life of Riley at college and one living the life of Riley in High school.

To the Boy
Get a job!
I'm a TA and work on research projects for both money and credit. I've had my first paper published.
Hurray! You're our favorite!

To the Girl
Get a job!
I'm top ten in my grade and varsity on the team. Spending your money takes the rest of my time up.

To the Wife
Get a job!
I have a job, swinging this bat, stand right here. Now don't move...

To Rusty the Mountain Dog
Get a job!
I've protected three generations of you people. I'm retired. Now shut up I am trying to sleep.

To the wiener dog
Get a job!
Whats a job? Does it involve food?

Ah, I can BARELY remember the days before kids so I can understand to some degree the confusion and "pressure" the folks without kids have.

- A friend of mine had kids early and I remember thinking "Enough about talking about the kids! Sheesh! Get a life!". I realized later it is like riding a bucking bronc: one lapse of attention and it all goes south on you. The kids are cute and all, entertaining little beings but you swear they have a death wish for those first few years. It becomes a rather 24-7 kind of job.

- The pressure has ALWAYS been the same and it never ends, it is like a check list: So, when will you get a girlfriend? So, when will you get married? So, when will you buy a house? So, when will you have kids? So, what school are they going to? So, when are they moving out? So, when will you retire? So, have you found a good doctor? So, are you moving to a smaller house? So, are you having grand kids soon? So, who has passed away lately? So, figured out a good retirement home yet? So, does anyone visit you?... the rest I would rather not think about.

- I have known a few friends and family that never had kids, I don't know how to say it but there is a certain... lack of thought of others that is part of their decision making. Kids force you to place greater value of your own worth to them and other's needs when that does not even enter the equation for those that live alone. I have witnessed some pretty sad and lonely end of life experiences for those who have no children, that alone seems to pay off in spades when you have a few people in your life that care. We, the nieces and nephews end up taking on the role of kids they did not have. Found it made the parents rather mad since the kid-less sibling would point out the various "frivolous" activities and material wealth they had by not having kids.

In the end, being there for people who need it and hoping you get the same becomes a reasonable goal.

I can say as sure as rain in autumn that it's a really great idea for pretty much anybody - After so many years of railroaded teaching, it's great to sit back and relax for a year or two, to get a grasp of yourself. Sure, in High School's where most of that happens for most people, but that's a protected institution, and has a special culture because of it.

My own current sabbatical years wasn't planned at all, and sort of forced upon me, but I can safely say that it's for the best

My advice would be go easy maybe just make yourself go for a walk everyday (tell yourself at some point to day I'm going for a half hour walk no matter what) for like a month or two go for a 15 minute walk one way then 15 minutes back, by then you should be in somewhat of a habit. Then

start to add more advance stuff like instead of walking you jog the whole distance now (or run), add more minutes, add other exercises like weight lifting, etc.
