Yes! that's right people it's on again the 4th annual Nerdcademy award painting comp! I know some of you have been itching for the chance to get some late year painting in and stretch your brains and brushes among like minded Nerds!
This year i'm giving everyone a little treat by offering multiple 'themes' for your entry they each can conjure many different feelings and ideas, the themes you may choose from are:
* 'No,no, no, nooooo!'
* 'gak! that was close!'
* 'Look to me brothers for we will prevail'
* 'Thank you brother'
You MUST use Games Workshop 40K models, bases and parts unless scratch built for the entry (except the base which can be up to 40mm).
Now, at this stage the comp will run from now until 10/01/2016 and to enter just complete your entry posting your updates in this thread beginning with a pic of your parts being used so we can see that its not an existing model.
judging will be done by myself, Whalemusic360 and I shall find another judge before closing Build, painting techniques, neatness, overall theme shall be the main criteria for judges.
now for the prize pool......oh YES, the prize pool Bwahahahahahah!
First prize will be the much coveted Nerdcademy Award!
Spoiler:
Second prize is a wonderful model celebrating GW 25th Anniversary!
Spoiler:
and now for THIRD prize! and, some would say the most sought after prize! a framed and signed photo of the seductive 'Nerds Nudes' photo series!
Spoiler:
So, there ya go! get your thinking caps on and start the conversation also please keep in mind that this is purely a FUN competition to have a go at a different model and chat on with your fellow Nerds, don't take it too seriously and any questions just ask.
" Now, at this stage the comp will run from now until 10/01/2016 "
You mean October 1st or or Jan 10. There is a difference on how we non Europeans look at the date sequence.
We in America look at this as MM/DD/YYYY. I believe European and others use DD/MM/YYYY?
Gitsplitta wrote: I'm thinking about trying to find the biggest model I own and trying to balance it on a single 40 mm base... just for giggles.
Again ... Titan! Another going for that 3 place prize! ( also the winner of the 3rd place prize should also have to use it as their computer wall paper for a year! - Tempting for sure)
Maybe your Eldar titan doing a 1 handed handstand shooting a pulse laser behind his back while doing the splits.. DARE YA!
Glad we're getting some interest again! and to clarify the date it IS the 10th of Janurary 2016 for finished models you can use parts from any other GW models but the main idea is for a 40K themed entry. as far as scratch building goes, i'm thinking more along the lines of making the theme stand out and the model pop, but it's up to you. Also the model needs to start in bits
can't wait to see these start popping up here for inspiration! and suprisingly again this year 3rd prize keeps coming up as a goal! maybe in a few more years I can do a Dakka Nerds Nudes calendar
Problem is, I don't have very many models that are in bits at the moment, most of my stuff is already assembled. Maybe I can do a Kroot, but that seems kind of lame really (in that there isn't much you can do with a simple Kroot, not that Kroot models are lame!). Maybe I'll buy something that will work.
Zerg Smasher having limited models for choice is something to trigger your creative side even more! :-) why not try to re position him and try to use his pose to create the dynamism for one of the options? also posting in here with ideas and works in progress won't hurt, i'm sure we'll be able to help! well, maybe not me or Whaley as we're judging but the others will lol!
Well that's me in. Will be fun to put all my effort into one mini rather than spread it over an army.
This is my idea
Close shave. Will be some re posing needed.
HAH! That's quite a challenge you have there Ramos
As for myself. I laid out my parts and though that they look a bit basic but hey, I will focus on posing and painting.
On another note. Popped into my FLGS over lunch to pick up supplies. Has anyone else seen the new pot sizes for shade?
Is this new or does it just show how long it has been since I bought anything?
Anyway, good luck all. Looking forward to what other people do.
Cheers Vim
Had a bit of a think, bit of a shifty through the bitz box, got an idea and this little pile of stuff plus some other things I need to get will be my entry, plus some skylax
And a few early WIPs. Apologies for the couple of dodgy shots, the camera battery died half way through the shoot and I can't replace them until Tuesday.
Iron Hands scheme, a choice only partly informed by the fact that it was Nerdy who explained how to achieve this effect. The variety of shades on the armour isn't too clear here, but you can sort of see what's going on. The whole lot including the base is still in progress, hopefully he'll be mostly complete by the time I can use the camera again. Any feedback welcome!
Nice job Para. Any way you can get some closer sharper shots? I feel your paintjobs are never done justice by the shots. Little far away and not easy to make out.
I'll definitely try once the camera is back in action. As I mentioned, the battery was dying as I was taking these, so I had to rush them a little. I'll revisit it as soon as I can. For the final pics, I'll be back at home and able to work with my other camera, which is way better, that's where the 'proper' shots will come from (and I plan to re-photograh a lot of the stuff I've done recently and shot with the crappy camera as well)
Yeah Paradigm that model looks pretty good already! :-) you seem to have worked out what I was trying to say when painting that technique too! looking forward to more updates mate!
Well, I'll probably join in as I'm painting my army at the time, though I doubt I'll win anything, even though I could have really used the third place prize to get me past these hard and troubling times D:
Just to clarify, does it have to be one model or can it be multiple models?
I don't think FW actually read the email I sent them, so this could be fun getting Fullers done.
I sent in a photo of the sprue part sat on my receipt, atop the box and "instruction" sheet and they sent back an email asking me to quote my order # or show the receipt.
Here is my entry - Gaius Vicinius, assembled yesterday. Going to fit in the 'look to me brothers for we shall prevail', and he strides towards battle firmly and angrily.

You can use multiple models if you wish mate, if it needs it to tell a story then go for it!

Excellent!
lipsdapips wrote: You know me too well whalemusic - I'm actually quite sad because i'm starting to run out of parts to make more
Hah! you'll find something! or you'll just start doing Ultramarines successor captains
YAY! GSD Started on some sub assemblies. All blue tacked right now.
Left arm reposed and the hand will be a GS sculpt. Scraped some of the plastic out from under the right pauldron to be able to convincingly elevate the arm in a defensive pose. Trying to get that hunched look of someone suddenly tensing. The gun is in his right hand as he was shooting around a corner to his right. Don't know why I decided to make life difficult for my self doing this but it's just the way I drew the ref so sticking with it
Changed the shape of the waist so the torso will look slightly bent forward and bent the right foot down as he will be pushing off from this foot.
Here is the ref again if you're wondering what I'm talking about pose wise. That's supposed to be a bullet or plasma bolt to the left of the image, striking the corner of the wall he was shooting around just a moment before.
Looking at it now, I may bring his left knee in a little to give a slightly more awkward and off balance feel.
ok so i was watching anime last night when i was hit by inspiration... so im changing my entry... i haven't decided on a head just yet so its not pictured... a leg will be re-positioned and chest will be played with...
I actually have some leftover bits from my Possessed kit as well as stuff from the basic CSM kit, maybe I could do some kind of Possessed champion as my entry into this thing.
This is how all the parts are going to fit together, minus his left arm.
I will add bits of kit to add interest and cover some dodgy areas like his back. Any C&C would be welcome by the way.
@vim lol i love the position of that guard, but no the only part from the quinn box is the arms, oop warrior legs, kalibite chest, and the cape i dont remember..
Automatically Appended Next Post: sry for the blur but here is a wip
i think im going to end up just chopping off the whole shoulder-pad + collar together
Thx folks. Inspired by Krautscientist's 'Legion' Admech conversion a while ago and looking through some of Blanche's art again. Can't wait to start getting th mechandrites into place. Should look good.....hopefully
Started to build the base to get a better idea of the layout. I used some cheap as chips modelling clay. I think it is made from paper pulp mixed with glue. After I finish but before painting I will coat it with thinned down PVA as it's quite brittle.
The trick to this is going to be trying to have the impact on the wall look dynamic. Not too sure how to do this so have started off by chipping out the crater, sticking in some cotton wool then adding some of the chipped out parts back in as debris.
O.K Gents it's time to inform you about when you've finished! send the images to me via PM with the title as the entry theme! and can I also get another roll call of those committed to entering so I can make sure I've not missed anyone!
Hey AUGmaniac we'd like a model built from parts and a pic of the building of it where possible, if you pull it apart and add some more conversions and posing etc. but show us the disassembled model and you'd be o.k as you need to re build and re imagine the theme.
Wow Cam! that's a bloody involved bit of work there dude! :-) those lenses are perfectly done and the effect on the blade is really cool and very different, I like the mix of styles and techniques on your composition, the stone work in particular is very good and the 'Red Cross' medical symbol appears printed on to the canvas! good job :-)
Impressive. Most impressive!
Would love to know your secret to being so accurate on the axe teeth Januine and do you use some kind of cable rolling device for the GS cables on the left of the pic? Sorry for being nosy
Automatically Appended Next Post: I wish there was a 'Gak! I keep dropping my mini and breaking it.' category. Anyhoo here we are. I think that's it finished. The colour in these photos is closer to the actual colour. Tomorrow I'll take some pics using a tripod and some proper lighting.
Cheers Vim. The cables are done with a gs with a thin piece of wire in the core then run through one of those cable/tentacle rollers. The axe teeth - you know those tipex/correction tape thingys? Bought one of those and broke it open. They have some plastic cogs n wheels inside. Simply cut one up and then glued the bits to a styrene rod. The AdMech symbols are from the imperial knight kit
Ah ok, gotcha. cybergoth.....likeeeee!!! being going througha lot of Blanche's stuff for inspiratin for this one. He'll be painted up in my usual AdMech livery but darker and grungier as befits his age!
Great idea. Love Blanche's painting. It sounds really bitchy, but I like it because he's not the most technically astounding painter, and his stuff is messy. It's really organic and looks real world. He treats those figures like little canvases and throws stuff at them.
I really should keep more of the Blanchitsu pages from Visions.
Anyone else finished their models yet? :-) don't forget to PM me with final images with the theme as the subject! not too many days left to go before judging WoooooHoooooo
So after a lot of tinkering and a coat of green primer I have him ready for a little paint. Meanwhile here in BC we have -20C, so I'll be inside for the next few days until it warms up a little ... Anyhow, 'Look to me brothers for we will prevail!!!'
@nerdfest09 - I have PM'ed you my final images. Is it OK to post them here?
@Januine - Great find for the axe head. I was kind of hoping you were going to give some free found object as your source for the cable roller Oh well will keep looking
The 'roller' for the axe's shaft was actually one of those brass square gratings from the GW basing kit cut in half and then used to roll GS wrapped around a straightened paper clip.
Hey guys.
Here are a couple of my final images. Hope you like. C&C would be more than appreciated.
Looking forward to seeing everyone else's work, it's been a blast Cheers, Vim
Righty - finally a bit of proper prgress. First paint of 2016! Magos is built cured and finally primed. The painting is a go. 5 days to get him finished eh?!!
Those new photos are great Camkierhi. I think the colours work better. Nice narrative going on in the piece.
Januine. That Magos looks pro. What kind of colour scheme you going for?
Come on Paradigm! I always love the grittiness of your work.
Rest assured I shall at least finish! The armour is done, the banner is getting there and the base is mediocre but finished, It's just the power sword that's giving me trouble; for some reason, the silver came right off as soon as I applied a wash last night.... and that's two and a half weeks since the silver was applied. No idea what's going on there.... I blame witchcraft...
I'm changing tack, going for a slightly different effect that will hopefully work.
Banging my head on the desk trying to build this guy. Even if I don't finish, it's worth trying.
Dry placing is about 90% of this build. Very irritating.
'"Warriors! Champions! Brothers! On this bloody day, our world has ended! Our own brothers have cast us aside and sent us spiralling into an abyss from which we may never escape. They have slain a god in flesh and betrayed every mortal soul. But here, and now, on this cursed plain, we stand. We fight. Take heart and steel. Look to the Emperor. Look to the banners aloft in His name, and we shall prevail!" Ancient Sidero Filus, Iron Hands 10th Company, on the fields of Istvaan V to the survivors of the Dropsite Massacre
Any thoughts more than welcome! Best of luck to those of you still working on your entries!
Finally all finished up. I spoilered the final pics as they are kinda big. This guy was a dream to do from start to finish. Well.....painting his robes through all the mechandrites was a little tricky but still.......
"Look out beyond - for they come. The despoilers, the wretched, the blasphemers and the enslavers. They come to desecrate our holy machines, to pervert the scared nature of what the Omnissiah has granted us. They will come no further I say. Look to me brothers, for we shall prevail. We shall end their blasphemous ways. We Shall Destroy"
Arch-Magos Braetalan'Kot before the The Battle of The Blind, Achlys Tertius
Cheers Buttery. The axe handle is GS around a straightened paper clip. You know the brass square of grating you get in the GW basing kit? Well I cut that in two and then used the two pieces as a makeshift roller to get that pattern on the axe shaft. Worked out ok
That's genius! I ask because I rescued a tech marine as part of a cancer charity build I'm doing, and the previous owner mangled his axe. That patterning is very close to what they use on the GW handles.
At first I tried using the GS rollers in different ways to get a patten but just didn't work. The grating 'roller' was a last ditch effort of desperation. Luckily it worked out - lol. Those two wee bits of brass have now earned a place amongst all the other tool
Argh! That's too bad about the cats Buttery. I know I have come close to turning my two into gloves a few times after catching them rampaging on my work bench. Hope you can salvage your work.
Great to see everyone else finished. So many great ideas out there
Oh it's not broken, but I didn't do anything today on the assumption that I'd have to use eidolon's spare head.
So he'll be finished, just not tonight in time for this.
Pity to see ya go, Buttery. But yeah! Take your time- Its an expensive mini and care should be taken. Looking forward to when you do finish him, though. Keep us updated
@Jan: UUUUNFFFF!!!!! Thats SO GOOD!!! Seriously, damn it... Very very impressed. Incredible build, fantastic colors... Fitting addition to your admech
I'll be lucky if I can get something close to that!
So Im only just now starting anything... hmmm.... No, no this was not a totally bad idea.
nerdfest09 wrote: Rushing a Primarch is NEVER a good idea, especially if he catches a glimpse and turns to attack you.... then you're shagged!
I wouldn't turn my back on Fulgrim in particular for very similar reasons.
It's going well despite missing the contest, there's a Primarch thread that once I'm home again, I'll share him in.
I got my hands on some metal decals for EC, so I pimped his cape something awful. Big Phoenix wings down the side.
"Oi! Where'd evvabody go?" -- Skaz, late Artillery Grot
WiP
Spoiler:
In my mind this is an instant before a "No,no, no, nooooo!" moment. Poor Skaz... But you know what they say, "You never hear the toe with your name on it."
Titans have been on my brain all year (I blame the epoxy fumes), so this idea just came to me late last night. I knew I wanted to build a toe from a warlord, possibly with something running away in terror before getting squashed. But then I found a very old bag of FW resin containing all of the Grot workers/crew, and this guy caught my eye. Just a perfect lost expression...
Base is made with SWM Mud effects and powders, Toe is scratch built from plasticard, grot is FW.
I haven't even got the final entry sheet or score sheet yet. It'll take a bit to go through everything, write up comments and whatnot. Give it a week or so.
^ Indeed Whaley is correct I'm working the next 8 days straight so when I get a chance I'll be doing my side of the judging and I'll send through to Whaley to do his judging etc! :-)
Sorry, been busy at work. I'll get it done soon. In my defense I've had it less than a week.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Ok guys, just sent Damo my score card. I gotta say, I have the battle for 3rd really close! It will be interesting to see who gets it. As always, if anyone wants a more detailed critic once scoring is out, just shoot me a pm.
Judging done! such a bloody great list of entrants this time and the ideas you all submitted were probably my favorite part seeing how each of you thought about something a little different for this was a joy to behold and the results speak for themselves.
You all have my apologies for the delay in the final judging but I think you'll find the recipients worthy and I hope it makes you all hunger for more for the next one!
so with a smile and a tip of the hat I present the WINNER of the 4th Annual Nerdcademy is.......
Spoiler:
VIM THE GOOD! with his 'Phew That was close entry' a model that was very cleverly put together well thought out and painted beautifully! Well done mate!
And now for number 2!
Spoiler:
Second prize goes to another amazingly well done conversion full of action and feeling with a suitably militaristic paint job done superbly CAMKIERHI and his No No NOOoOOOO entry, Woooooo Hooooo well done dude I loved the way this is a small diorama in itself! so much to see
Number 3.........
Spoiler:
and now for third prize! this highly coveted prize has been much sought after over the years and this years lucky and worthy recipient is none other than Januine! I know this prize will be proudly and loudly displayed in your home Jan? perhaps used as a screensaver on your phone or computer? perhaps even made into fetching placemats for the dining table?
Once again, thank you all for taking the time to enter and have a bit of fun I shall get another one organized for you all soon well done to the winners for the comp a hotly contested and close finish!
I gotta say, all the models the round were great on their own merits. The model that won 1st place really did it for me honestly, and you can see the cinematic effects of the top 3. Good job all!
Thank you very much folks. I look forward to holding in my hands that piece if legend!!!
The photo above though folks is an old WiP photo and not the finished fig.

Yeah, wasn't this the final?:
I only know because I downloaded it to keep because it is such a brilliant scratchbuilt job! Congrats on placing and your prize.
I love all the attention to detail going on in that Januine. The markings on the skulls and even the little touch of making two colour tones to the robes. So nice
I think you have been in every single comp I've been a part of Cam, and it seems to get better each time. Modeling has never been your issue, but glad to see some techniques are coming through in your paint.
