Hi there! I'm slowly working my way back into the hobby and decided a blog would help keep me going as I try to blow through all of my Chaos Space Marines. I'm currently working on my Alpha Legion, but will eventually go on to other projects (just picked up an Eldar army). So to start I have a Havoc marine that I've been working on. I'll add pictures and updates often. Thanks for stopping by!

Looks nice, I really like the blending that you did on that power armor, it has just the right combination of blue, green, and metallic.
34328
Post by: l0k1
Thanks! No blending was used on this model. The color of the power armor was achieved using a basecoat of Runefang Steel and multiple coats Gulliman Blue and Waywatcher Green glazes.

Great result from what sounds like a relatively simple technique!
34328
Post by: l0k1
Pictures added. Still need to do a layer of 'ard coat, a layer of lahmien medium, and put them on better bases.

Looks good, but I think that the skin on the helmetless guy could use a wash, it looks a bit flat right now.

The armour really has come out nicely, and the other colours you've used on the models compliment it well!

Thanks guys!
@ CarlosTheDwarf I did wash his head and that was the second payer. I'll do some light washing around his brow to bring that out a bit and maybe a little edge highlighting to make it pop.

Post by: CarlosTheDwarf
Sounds good, looking at what you did on the armor using washes I'm sure it will look great!

The armour looks great. Did you do full glazes with the green and blue, or partial ones?
34328
Post by: l0k1
The glazes were thinned down with lahmian medium and applied all over the model. I did 3 coats of Gulliman Blue, which made it a bright metallic blue. I then did 2 coats with Waywatcher Green all over.

Post by: Azazelx
Cool - thanks. I'll probably try it when I build a squad or two of AL.
34328
Post by: l0k1
No problem! Though just a heads up certain areas of the chest and back can be a pain, especially if their backpacks are on. You may have to lay the models on their fronts/backs to get the glaze to rest long enough to dry or else it will slide down to his belt area and pool there.

Love the way you paint your Alpha Legion! Great paint scheme! I wish I was that talented haha
My Angels of Vengeance are far simpler to paint
34328
Post by: l0k1
@Master Azalle Thanks, if you read through my replies to previous posts you can see how easy the process is to replicate. Your Angels of Vengeance look great, sometimes simple looks just as good or better than over complicated
Put the guys on some cork bases, and added the highlights to the half helmeted guy. Just need to paint the rim of the base and drill the holes of the guns

After I do the finishing touches on this unit, I will post step by step pics of how to get the effect on the armor.

Very Nice! I really like what you did with the armor.
I might just feel inspired by it for my own alphas. My first squad was in non-metallic, but when I get to the terminators and the HQ, I'll give this a try...

Started on a 5 man squad of raptors. These guys should look pretty good when they're done

Post by: Raichase
I'd argue they look good already, and should look even better when they're done, but I'm a sucker for nice looking Chaos armies, so what would I know?

Post by: l0k1
Lol There are pictures of stuff I've done before I started these guys in my gallery if you want to check those out. Some of the Alpha Legion guys I've done before will be redone with this new scheme.
I'll be doing squads of Berserkers, Noise Marines, and Plague Marines here and there. When the weather warms up around here I'll be putting the CSM on the shelf and starting on my Yme-Loc eldar.

A small update for the raptors. Went and did all of the trim in bolt gun metal, added black to the guns/joints, and added red to the helmet lenses and any chaos eyes in the armor or weapons. Pretty time consuming doing that trim, but it looks alright so far. I was purposely a little sloppy on the helmet lenses to lay some ground work for a glow effect.

Sorry there hasn't been an update in a few days. I'm currently getting things packed up and ready to move into a new apartment, and I've been helping at my grandmother's with a lot of cleaning. I hope to at least get this squad of raptors fully painted sometime next week.
34328
Post by: l0k1
Hey everyone! I've successfully moved into my new apartment and the dust is finally starting to settle, so I'm able to get some more work done!
The Raptors need some more highlights and I need to do their bases, but almost done.
There is a local painting competition coming up next month and I'm debating on whether or not to attempt doing a Heldrake in the Alpha Legion scheme that I've been using. What do you guys think?
34328
Post by: l0k1
And here is the finished unit!
34328
Post by: l0k1
Hey guys! I started on a Daemon Prince last night. The armor came out a little darker than I had wanted but hopefully it won't look as bad once it's fully painted. I got this guy in a trade a while back, and the paint that was on him was kind of thin so I just decided to paint over what was there. I'm thinking of keeping the lighter green skin, but obviously with some extra layers. Let me know what you think!
95538
Post by: KernelTerror
Looking good so far ! You probably already gave it a thought, but if you keep this skin tone, it can probably be interesting to select some elements to paint in a very contrasting color. The raptors are brilliant btw.
34328
Post by: l0k1
Thanks! I was thinking of doing the inner parts of the wings in a dark angels green. I kinda wanted to keep a reptilian look to him. Though if I do the inner parts of the wings in a purple, maybe magenta, that could look really nice.
As a side note, as the title of thread says, I will be starting on my Eldar army soon. With a painting competition coming up I decided to work on my CSM until the showing is over.

Post by: l0k1
Thanks! I'm pretty happy with the results so far. I'll be starting on his highlights tonight.
There was a change in the categories for the upcoming painting competition, so I'll have to put the Heldrake aside for now to try and fill in the new spots. I need to do a unit of troops (I have some special weapons marines, an aspiring champ, and a standard bearer, I just need to do some bolter guys). I need a unit of elites, I was thinking either a squad of terminators or a Helbrute. I need a LOW, which I have Baneblades, but we'll see how long it takes to get everything else done. Lastly, I need a fortification. I have a Bastion built and unpainted that I would have to add spikes to, but that's another maybe.

So another update. My local game store has the AoS starter on display, uses it for demos, and as a loaner force. I've been pretty interested in messing with the new fantasy chaos stuff for a while now. I asked the owner if he would be ok with me painting the chaos half of the starter set, and he was pretty enthusiastic about letting me do it. So after I get more Alpha Legion stuff painted for the painting competition, I'll be doing up the fantasy guys as well as a reaper anti paladin.

Post by: l0k1
Hey guys I decided to do a Helbrute for the elites category, and because I had already partially painted him a while ago. Got all of the base coats done, and he's been washed. Sunday night I'll begin highlights let me know what you think!
34328
Post by: l0k1
Hey guys, got an update image for you. I still have a few little things to highlight, and I have to get the base done, but he's almost done. As a side note, I ordered a small lighting kit that should be coming in next Tuesday, so hopefully the quality of my pictures should be much better soon.

Very neat looking hellbrute, well done. I especially like the clean transition between the exhausts and the flesh, really making it look as if they are coming through it.
34328
Post by: l0k1
Thanks! I did a wash with Reikland Fleshshade, did the highlights, and then went back around the exhausts and other areas that would be strained from mutation with a thinned down purple wash.
I hope to start my Reaper Anti Paladin or a squad of Cultists tonight. We'll how things play out though.

I love the Death Guard upgrade kit. So much amazing detail! I really would like to do alot of FW upgraded things but always talk myself out of spending the money. I did promise myself that if I ever did another loyalist army I'd go all out with FW shoulder pads and vehicle doors lol.
I'm should be done with these Terminators on Sunday night. After that I'm going to try and speed paint a 5 man squad of Alpha Legion marines for the Troop category. I may not have time, but we'll see. Either way, next Saturday I will post pics from the local Armies on Parade.

Post by: l0k1
Hey guys! So I knocked out 2 Alpha Legion Marines with bolters this week to add to some of the random guys I did a long time ago. Now that I have my troop category, I'm ready for the competition this Saturday. We'll also be doing a large apocalypse diorama with painted minis. I'll have pics posted of everyone's competition entries and the apocalypse diorama.
Now that my entries for this painting competition are done, it's time to put the Alpha Legion on the shelf until a new codex drops, and begin working on other armies. This new project will either be the AoS Chaos from the 2 player starter, or my Yme-Loc Eldar. Which would you like to see? I could also use some ideas on what kinda of scenic bases to do for the eldar. Thanks for looking!

With the painting competition over it's finally time to start my Eldar army!
34328
Post by: l0k1
As I try to plug away at building my Eldar army I figured I'd post a list of my Eldar that need work. I'm going to doing a Guardian Warhost, no cheesy scatter bike seer council shenanigans. I'm going to try and build the 20 guardians, farseer, spiritseer, and battleforce then paint them just so there isn't a big gap between posts of unpainted models to painted ones. I also need to figure out how I want to base this army. I might just go with grey rocks with some flock, let me know what you guys think.
NIB
1 Farseer
1 Spiritseer
1 Wraith Knight
1 Eldar Battleforce (current one)
20 Guardians
5 Dire Avengers
5 Wraithguard
5 Wave Serpent
1 Crimson Hunter
1 Fire Prism
12 Fire Dragons
3 War Walkers
3 Vaul's Batteries
Used models that need painted or stripped and repainted
6 Fire Dragons
20ish Dire Avengers
1 Yriel
1 Asurmen
1 Crimson Hunter
For those that don't know, this is the color scheme I'll be trying to do
79241
Post by: Brother Payne
That's a lot of infantry! Especially for an eldar army.
I'd be inclined to go for snow themed bases - think it would compliment their scheme nicely with the white face and cool gem tones. If you wanted a warmer feel then maybe use Blackfire Earth? Think that would work well with their helmets
34328
Post by: l0k1
Yeah there is a decent amount of infantry, but whenever I build an army I build into apocalypse so that I can easily do multiple builds on the fly. I actually need to pick up more Fire Prisms, Wraithguard, Wraithlords, Swooping Hawks, and Warp Spiders lol.
I havent tried snow themed bases before. That could like really nice. Another option I had thought of was lava bases.

Post by: l0k1
@evildrcheese I really liked the scheme too. It's a scheme you don't see very often, it's eye catching, and white isn't a major part of it lmao.
Ok dakka users, I'm getting there on building my guys, I promise lol. Bloody Guardians are a pain to build and I think I got the boxes with the most flash on them. But I currently have 20 Guardians, 3 Heavy Weapons Platforms, 1 Farseer, and 1 Spiritseer built and ready to prime. I'm starting on the last batch of 10 Guardians, then I'll get my Vyper, Warwalkers, and Vaul's Battery for my Guardian Defender Warhost. Building has been slow since my buddies coerced me into playing Ark with them a couple of hours a week. So stay tuned!
On a side note, I traded the remnants of my Grey Knights to a buddy for his small Eldar force. He's also going to be buying me some more Swooping Hawks and Warp Siders to even up the trade. This adds the following to my "to be painted" pile
1 Wraithknight
2 Farseers
4 Warlocks
1 Illic Nightspear
25 Dire Avengers
6 Rangers
6 Swooping Hawks
6 Warp Spiders
+ whatever he picks up for me.

No joke! It happens every time I start an army. I tell myself "just buy a handful of stuff, build it, paint it, THEN get more", but then I somehow end up with 100+ models that need stripped, repaired, repainted, or just built and painted lol. In addition to my ever growing Eldar force, I'd estimate I still have 300ish CSM models that need done, plus a FW Angron, 1 Bastion, 3 Baneblades, and 2 Imperial Knights.......I need to start a sweat shop to get all of my models ready for painting lol

I'll be the first to admit that I too have this problem I think I might own more unbuilt/unpainted models than painted... And with 4000pts+ of completed DA and the same again of WHFB, that's saying something
Edit: and today I just bought more Warhounds

Post by: l0k1
Lol at least I'm not alone! Another problem I run into is that I start building/painting/playing an army, amass a huge force, then less than 50% of the way through painting I decide to trade it for something else lol. I'm really trying not to do that anymore and thus far have been successful, but there's always that voice in the back of my head saying "you should trade that army for another one that you can ally with your csm" or "that new codex is amazing, you should start that army".
Shame on you for buying models before the rest of your stuff is painted lol!

Thanks. Yeah I really like the look of the Yme- Loc, I'm hoping they get their own trait in the codex.
I'm currently debating on how I want to the armor for this daemon prince. Half of me wants to do the alpha legion scheme, the other half says to do death guard. What does everyone think?
34328
Post by: l0k1
I started working on a squad of Obliterators and a Dark Apostle. Got the armor done and the skin started with Bugmans Glow and a wash of Reikland Fleshshade.
106439
Post by: Ynneadwraith
Aah so that's what Bugman's Glow is for. I've got a pot from an eBay paint haul but haven't worked out what to do with it yet. Didn't think of washing it for ruddy skintones.
Now if you can find a use for Kindleflame then I'm set
Death Guard Daemon Prince is looking great by the way, and I'm liking the opalescent Alpha Legion armour
34328
Post by: l0k1
Yeah Bugmans Glow is a good base for building up skintones. Reikland Fleshade adds that natural shadow look. I need to go back and hit the stretched flesh areas on the Obliterators with some purple wash to give it more of a bruised look.
Kindleflame can be drybrushed along edges of orange or bright red for a highlight.
Thanks! I might need to go back and do a little bit more with the green glaze to get a some more green in the armor.
106439
Post by: Ynneadwraith
Aah that would explain it. Never really do bright colours
Purple washed bruising would look great on the Obliterators great idea. I've also found that a combination of Bloodletter washes and Carroberg Crimson washes does a really nice job of making skin look really sore which might suit them well too

Well today was the last day of my local shop's 50% off 40k sale. The total damage is as follows
1 Magnus
1 AoS Nurgle Daemons starter
1 box of Plaguebearers
1 box of Plague Drones
1 Herald of Nurgle
1 Kharn (new sculpt)
1 box of CSM Terminators
1 Wave Serpent
1 Trumvirate of Ynnead
3 boxes of snap together cultists
4 brushes
About 15 or so paints
Also prepaid for the new Eldar codex
Grand total ended up being about $380ish, AoS stuff had an additional mark down, and there is usually 10% stuff in-store.

Thanks! Alpha Legion are a lot of fun to paint and look great. Once I get caught up on the CSM I want to get done (ie Cultists, Berzerkers, and Noise Marines), I'll probably bounce back to Eldar, but may do some fun stuff like a Heldrake or a squad of combi plasma terminators. It all depends on what I have primed and ready lol. Would anyone like to see anything specific?

Post by: l0k1
Hey guys! I started work on a handful of Cultists. I still have some base coats that need done before I do a wash, then some quick highlights. Part of me really wants to do some Blue and Green to match my Alpha Legion, but I haven't figured out if I will or not yet. Unfortunately, I'm working over all week so progress on this handful will be a little slower than I'd like.

great work on the Mutilators! I've always been a little daunted by chaos, just because of all the extra gribly bits that comes along with Chaos worship.
Looks great though! Well done on the blue green armor

I'm liking the ragtag mishmash of Alpha Legion colours. Ties them in while keeping them looking irregular
34328
Post by: l0k1
Thanks that's what I was going for. A normal well trained and equipped army is uniform, but cultists I figured they'd just grab whatever was blue or green to show their allegiance.
92803
Post by: ZergSmasher
Those cultists look great! I'm building myself an Alpha Legion army myself, so I may steal your idea on how to do the cultists. The only cultists I painted were back in the days of Khorne Daemonkin, so I did the same thing with red, black and gray (varied the scheme using the same three colors). I've got lots more needing paint.
34328
Post by: l0k1
Thanks! The only problem I had was having to go back over the squad multiple times because I forgot little things like a tube being red cuz it wasn't red on another guy lol.
92803
Post by: ZergSmasher
That's a cool effect on that Heldrake. Maybe I missed it in an earlier post or something, but how'd you get it to look that way? I might steal the idea for my regular Alpha Legion infantry.
34328
Post by: l0k1
Thanks! The effect is really easy. I base coated the armor with Runefang Steel (or the brightest metallic silver you use), then did 3 coats with Gulliman Blue glaze, then 2 coats with Waywatcher Green glaze. Make sure to let each coat fully dry before doing the next. The number of coats you'll need depends on how much you thin down the glazes really.
34328
Post by: l0k1
Got some of the metal trim done tonight. Have I ever mentioned that the Heldrake is a pain in the ass to paint? Really wish I had partially built it, painted it, then finished assembly lol. Oh well, with the metal trim done (At least on the top half), its starting to look pretty sweet.

Farseer and Warlocks are finished and based! As a side note, I think I'm finished using 'Ard Coat and Lahmian Medium on my models. For whatever reason it leave white spots and cracks on the models and ruins the paint job. I've greatly reduced the amount of both that I use on my models and gave the Ard Coat about an hour to dry and it still cracks.

Hey guys! I've taken on some more responsibilities at work so I've haven't had much time to work on stuff, but I did start base coating a squad of Swooping Hawks. Since they're finecrap I also put down some green stuff to hold them to the base better. I also spent time painting up all of the weapons for the Support batteries.
