What is your #1 PLAYED tabletop game within the last couple months? @ 2016/06/13 21:29:10

Post by: Talizvar

I have had a few false starts due to the occasional issue with a game or directions friends have gone in their interests.

I was surprised to find that Star Wars Armada has clocked-in the most table time as of late and I had intended that as my on the side game.
I think the main reason is many people have had interest and I collect both factions so it gets "demo'ed" a lot.

(I have: 40k: lots of armies, X-wing, Battletech, Alphastrike, Bolt Action, Robotech RPG Tactics, Federation Commander)

What are you playing lately and why do you think it is so successful at this time?

Thanks for indulging my curiosity.

If you're including miniature based Boardgames, Kingdom Death: Monster has been by far my favorite. Silver Tower was fun too.

KDM: I can get a RPG experience playing solo, and not actually be able to anticipate what happens. Using something like Pathfinder or DnD 5.0 you have to write your own path. KDM is much more organic, and offers lots of challenge while still being fun.

Silver Tower: Was easy to pick up, and our group had a lot of laughs playing it. A very good social game, with a fun casual experience.

Malifaux. There was a slow grow league at my FLGS which built a lot of interest with my brother and I, so between that league and games we've been playing it's definitely been on top. Lots of purchases too for options, reading of strategy wiki's and such.

Not bad for a game we only casually played occasionally before Christmas.

Malifaux for me, too. That would have been 1st place anyway, but I played 7 games this weekend at a big event in California, so that pushed it way way in the lead. I feel like it might slip closer to 2nd place due to some slight burn out now, though.

Probably X-Wing if I had to guess, but the last two weeks at game night with my friends we've played T.I.M.E Stories, which has been fun.

Deathwatch Overkill. Played through all the missions in the campaign.

It was successful because of the models, at first. People wanted to see them on the table.
Turns out the game itself is actually pretty cool. The marines are used more like they would be in the fluff.

Dropzone Commander.

The game is finally getting some local traction with a fairly small but growing group. It's very well balanced, can handle games with 3 or 4 players with ease, and the models are fantastic. It's also being helped by the anticipated delivery of the Dropfleet Commander during the summer.

Without question, the best tabletop game I've played so far.

X-Wing. I have been playing that almost exclusively since September. It has pushed aside Malifaux, Infinity and definitely 40K. Even Frostgrave hasn't stimulated me that much since picking up X-Wing.

40k 'cause well 40k! Seconded by SW Armada. AoS pretty much doesn't exist anymore 'round these parts. The GW board games fell/fall flat. No other table top besides polyversal, Halo FB and FoW are even mentioned. Sad really. I'm open to any table top game or system.

40k all the way for me! I did get in a couple of games of Space Hulk at my friend's house a couple of weeks ago. I don't really play any other games, although I've toyed with getting into Kings of War (but I probably won't do it, as I'd rather get more 40k stuff with that money).

As for AoS in my area, I've seen it being played exactly once since it launched, and that was at the FLGS in my town that I don't go to as often as the other one. One of the players had some amazingly well-painted Stormcast Eternals, though.

The game that gets played most is probably MTG (if that counts), simply because it's so easy to start a game, and doesn't take long to play, and it's fun. After that my most played game would be X-wing, I've been playing almost every evening for the last few months. We usually play smaller games 55-75 points (depending on what ships we want to try out), we try to mix it up a lot. I like X-wing because it's a good balance of list building, skill, and luck, and I'm always finding new combinations I'd like to try out.

After that, I play Infinity a bit. I like Infinity a lot, and I'd probably buy and play more, if I didn't have a backlog of stuff that still needs painting. That might be another point in X-wing's favour. You can literally buy something and put it straight on the table finished. After that, I mostly play boardgames: Arcadia Quest, Mansions of Madness, and Zombicide Black Plague, would be my most played over the last few months.

Infinity.

I've also played some 9th age (WHFB) and kings of war, but infinity has been the most often played game for the last 12 months.

I've never really been into boardgames. Not since roborally.

At the club we've been playing 2 of our old standbys Song of Blades and Heroes and Mech Attack.

The club's been a bit slow and our bi-weekly meetings have been lower attendance than usual so we've fallen back on rulesets we know and have enjoyed for years.

Both Song of Blades (28mm fantasy warband skirmish) and Mech Attack (like battletech but 10% of the rules and plays in 1/4 the time) are fairly rules-lite games that we pretty much know inside and out and always seem to provide a fun evening.

Guild Ball.

I'm a little worried, because it seems like with the release of MkIII, some of the local GB players will likely drop the game. At the same time, I'm kind of glad, because it may get some of the ultra-competitive types out of the scene.

Thanks all.

It is good to see people get their "go-to" games in.

I find it interesting when "opportunities" present themselves where you wonder how you found yourself with another group and playing other things.

I see MTG dominating the space at my local FLGS and the regular groups of RPG players is good to see (Pathfinder and D&D). I have sworn off those two formats to preserve my finances (MTG) and my time (RPG). Not that I would not like them (I know I would like them too much...).

Tabletop is "safe" and looks real pretty.

MTG doesn't need to be expensive. Compared to miniature games, I think you get a lot more "game" for your money. My gf and I went splits on a Duel Deck (which was like £7.50 each), and we played with that for months, we played with it until the sleeves wore out. It's probably the best £7.50 I ever spent. I would never be able to get that much play or value out of a board game, and they are usually in the £60-£100 range.

We do get a few boosters each, whenever a new set comes out, and then play a little league with whatever cards we pull. It costs about £15 every 3-4 months, but I could probably half that if I sold some of the rares that I don't use. I think it's worth checking out if you have someone to play with, it's a good game, with a lot of strategy and almost infinite replay value.

Mostly played Warmaster for the last six months never mind one in oreperation for the next Tournament at 4TK gaming. Definitely how Warhammer FB should be played.

Had a first game of Sparticus last week. Awesome.

Also nabbed a copy of Heroquest off a mate last week and have played most of the weekend with my daughter. Also great fun.

I think that it's hard for alot of us to keep CCG's at an affordable level. The wife and I tried with MTG, but it spiraled a bit and over the course of a year, I proabably spent a couple hundred bucks. Ended up selling everything but our Decks just to get out of the rat race.

We found Pre-packaged Deckbuilding games to be a better deal for us. On the low end you have the Crytozoic LoTR Deckbuilding games which are about $20 each, are great as 2 player or with multiplayer as friends. They don't really combine terribly well with each other (though they say they will) but at $20 each (around $15 used) you can cycle through multiple games for a relatively low price.

Of course if you really like the CCG thing and are just playing with close friends or family, then buying a dead game can be another way to go. When you can get a box for the price of a few packs, the cost of entry is amazingly low. The now-defunct "WARS" game is ridiculously cheap and pretty well done.

I found if you are not swearing at your friends while playing, you are not doing it right.
That game promotes doing very evil things to each other.
Great fun but you certainly get to know how far someone would go in a game.

<edit>Cards:
I still have a horde of "Shadowfist" cards from wayyyyyy back.
This gallery shows the cards from the original release that I have: http://www.shadowfist.com/card_gallery/cardgallery01.htm
I had a black deck from when MTG first came out and we played after hours at the hobby shop on Mondays, I then part-way shifted to Blue deck because it is all about prevention...
Then I gave it all to a cousin and he became a god in his MTG group.
I shudder to think what those cards would be worth now.

I even have a "Groo the Wanderer" card/dice game that is fun.

Roleplay:
Rifts (All PB stuff until Wormwood), "Cyberpunk 2020" with all the add-ons, "Star Trek the Roleplaying game from FASA" 2nd edition plus the various D&D stuff as well as "RoleMaster".
I played this stuff till well, it was best to have a break. But I am much better now...

Agreed. You can have a lot of fun with MTG if you treat it like an LCG.
Those pregenerated decks they were selling a couple of years back were very cool for that.

If you liked Decipher's Star Wars game, you might like WARS. It's essentially a the same rules with different fluff and art. Folks describe it as taking the best mechanics from the SW game. It only had two releases, but you can get a box of each and all 6 stater decks for $20!

Armada, because we have a league going on. The rest of my group aren't much for painting, so all of the Star Wars games from FFG...which I'm personally getting a bit jaded on. I think it's because I prefer Fantasy...something with some character.

I brought over Silver Tower a couple weeks ago, and it was great fun! I can't wait to play again. We'd also played a bit of Bolt Action, which the group seemed to like...but not many want to invest in another game...especially when they don't build/paint.

X-wing for me. Even that is only due to the fact I have found an online version you can play solo.

It has become my preferred game bacause 1) it's prepainted, 2) individual ships are relatively cheaps and you only need a handful to play, 3) Set-up and tear-down is relatively quick and 4) you can play several games in a relatively quick time. In each of those points, it's the exact opposite of 40K, which I have been struggling to organize a single game of late with my son.

I've played two games a lot roughly equally. Hail Caesar I've been playing a lot because it's the ruleset a friend used for a demo game and I was helping him with it. Ronin is the game I choose the play the most. I love 16th century Japanese history, painting samurai and the ruleset has nice tactical gameplay.

The cards were pretty cheap on eBay and a couple of other sites that sell older games. We've had a blast, but lately we haven't played them much because we've both kind of moved on with our lives and don't get together often. I still have the Star Wars cards, and he still has the Star Trek ones and even has a couple of friends that he has introduced the game to.

If you liked Decipher's Star Wars game, you might like WARS. It's essentially a the same rules with different fluff and art. Folks describe it as taking the best mechanics from the SW game. It only had two releases, but you can get a box of each and all 6 stater decks for $20!

More info about the game here:
https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/12488/wars-trading-card-game

I actually bought that deal a few years ago. Me and my brother only played it once, though. I mostly bought it for the cards since I thought they were cool and I liked the artwork (and for 20 bucks, I wasn't out anything if I didn't like the game).

Infintiy. Its bringing me back to my Shadowrun RPG playing days without having to invest 6 hours per gaming session. I'm loving it.

Frostgrave is the current favorite.

Played some Bolt Action too.

Frostgrave is reading up really nice as a game.
The simplicity of the rules coupled with the combinations of what you can do, lend complexity of no small order.
Never seen it played.
I have all the books so I just need to buy a few used undead GWFB sets out there.

Bolt Action is getting more time lately at the FLGS, I am slowly getting my Americans in order (they are an unruly lot).

Infinity seems to be the Sci-Fi. game of choice, I am seeing a few guys with awesome terrain playing at the FLGS lately.

This Saturday my friends are roping me into 72nd scale WW2 gaming with the "Command Decision - Test of Battle" ruleset.

I swear I have played more different games in my 40-something years than I did in my 20-something... this is a good time to be a gamer!

Agreed, its a great time to be a tabletop gamer.

My Big games are:

Malifaux (always solid)
The Roots of Magic (an interesting tactical game of wizard duels)
Epic Armageddon (love this game to bits)
Kings of War (love the freedom to use what fantasy minis I like)
Just picked up Guildball too, so who knows...

I used to play quite a lot of different games in my early 20's although virtually all of them were from GW. I play about the same number of games now but only 1 of them is by GW (and that was abandoned well over a decade ago).

Right there with you but for me it's teens/20's vs 30's.
Before my 30's I played 40k and tried Necromunda, Battletech (technically a boardgame, but still...) and Combat zone onece.
In the last 5 years I've probably played close to 2 dozen and at least 6 have made it into regular rotation. Still play a GW game a few times a year, but it's now Necromunda (love that game).

Just played "Command Decision: Test of Battle" WW2 72nd scale tabletop.
I really liked it.
I daresay an almost "elegant" ruleset.
Usually large battles are like watching paint dry.

If interested, link here:

Rules overview here:

I am usually a science fiction guy, but I think I can stand to play this a bit more.

The last time I played a miniatures game was a game of the Star Wars Miniature Game.
A team of vagrants with two guard droids went up against the might of the Grand Army of the Republic and won!
At least they get some action sometimes.

Mostly Bolt Action and Judge Dredd lately, with an odd game of Saga thrown in, and a demo game of Open Combat, which was good fun.

Quite the variety.
Good stuff.

2nd edition 40k??
I just started playing 40k about in the middle of 2nd edition as they were about to release for 3rd.
My friends insisted on playing the original Rogue Trader a fair bit during 2nd edition.

Too many distractions to shake a stick at.
Judge Dredd: love the "fluff", game is not bad, a bit goofy in spots: what is there not to love?

X-wing, well... out of the box and you go.
Pretty as all heck and no shortage of people to play.

Problem is: the weather has been too nice lately to think about being inside to play (shock/horror I know!)

Here's hoping my most played game will soon be 15mm Kings of War with the wife and maybe one of my buddies, as soon as I get a pair of armies done. Nice slick ruleset, and 15mm lets me just use a 3x4 table.

That and some Necromunda-sized games of 2nd edition 40k.

Either KoW or ancient style stuff using the one hour wargames book. I'm glad I found the latter, because it's let me get in some gaming with my dad, who normally doesn't have the patience for the more complex rule sets.

My "group" is small, and busy, so things like Kings of War, which are easy to pick up and very forgiving of proxies, well, they just fit perfectly.

Since GW turned 40k into massive models/flyers game rather than squads and then did a similar to WHFB with End Times, I've tried out and played loads of games - and spent loads of money on great figures too.

So far I've been playing; Bolt Action, Kings of War, Deadzone, Frostgrave, Open Combat, Blood Eagle, Saga, Maelstrom's Edge, X-Wing, Zombicide and Iron Cross.

As for #1 played?
Well I guess the most played is X-Wing with my 10 year old lad - he loves it.
With the wife, it's Iron Cross.
With friends? Probably Zombicide (or the weekly D&D session)

I am sooo grateful to GW for doing what they did to 40k and bringing out AoS. I never knew so many better games were out there, even if the models aren't oversized or filled with skulls.

Sigh. Yeah.
First two models I had to make when I started Bolt Action were the WW2 version of Cap and Red Skull - kept my lad playing BA for a while. Lol.

Still far, far away from my planned MEdge game.

Nothing for me lately. I am kind of in a limbo and transitional phase in my life (and the life of my friends). I just moved into a house, but my usual group of friends can't really get together for any type of regular game. I have decided to get back into 40k after a very long time away, as I know the my LGS has a scene of some sort, but I've never seen anyone playing it there.

You are a good dad!
I get in X-wing at home, any time the kids see a SW movie of some type they say "I wish I could be X" and I would say "I have that".
Then the game gets set-up and I have to figure out a way to balance the toys for each of the ships and make a scenario.
It works great but I need to paint up some "special" models like you did to better represent the heroes.

Infinity and Kingdom Death are my current games of choice, although X-wing keeps getting attention, seems I like skirmish level games more than big games, which might be an issue with all the Heresy era minis I'm prepping...
