Rogue Trader RPG: Terrain / minis in Spaaaace... @ 2016/09/03 03:04:09

Post by: Ironhands.com

Hey all,
This fall I'm starting up a Rogue Trader campaign using Fantasy Flight's 40K RPG system, and my alarmingly large backstock of terrain and miniatures. To capture the swashbuckling feel of Rogue Trader, some new models are in order.
The inevitable space battles are likely to be just a handful of ships (rather than entire fleets), so I knew I'd have room for something more impressive than just off-the-shelf BFG minis. So to show I'm serious about the campaign, I started work on this custom Cruiser!

The whole thing's about 12 inches long. I started by making a prow from scratch- it's hard to find that classic shape, and I have a table mounted sander that made it possible (though very, very dusty) to grind out my own. I cobbled together a basic frame out of wood pieces, and set to detailing.

All the Gun Batteries are made from various wire connectors and terminal blocks, as is the bridge (making a good looking bridge is tricky!). Combined with cut down pieces of Basilica Administratum pieces, the Gothic aesthetic came together surprisingly quickly. The statue in front of the bridge is from the Warhammer Fantasy Manor House terrain, as are the eagles on the deck. The 3 gun turrets are my favorite find- they're just cut down Wire Connectors taht have spring levers so they're reuseable. you can find 'em on ebay crazy cheap.

The Engines are made from Thread Spools wrapped with rubber tank tread from a toy, and capped off with nozzles that are just half a fish tank filter bio ball. The smaller engines are conduits from the Imex Power Plant kit. (Is it just me, or are all the IMEX / Platformer / Tehnolog kits getting really hard to find these days?). Also key to achieving the Battlefleet look are plenty of antennas.

With good sources of materials identified, I'm confident I can make even larger ships for our campaign (Cruiser, anyone?). But I hope to have this Frigate painted before then, in time for our players to start skulking about the Koronus Expanse

Nice, I love bfg but haven't gotten round to playing the rpg yet, have you worked out the ship build yet? Does she have a name?

Rogue Trader RPG: Terrain / minis in Spaaaace... @ 2016/09/06 04:27:45

Post by: Ironhands.com

Thanks, all! The ship's about 12 inches long. I'm realizing now it's closer to a light cruiser. Looking like Port and Starboard Macro Cannon Batteries, and Dorsal Sunsears for the turrets. There's no official spec for a hull like that, so I'll just have to devise my own... No name yet, but it's coming soon.

Final build shots: finished the Prow, and added more detail to the Stern and Bridge areas.

The big challenge now is picking a Color Scheme... Visual suggestions welcome!

That is fantastic.

Your stuff is always inspiring.

Funny you bring up the imex kits. I was just shopping for them, pegasus hobbies site has the chemical kit but they say the power plant is likely gone for good.

Whats funny about asking is I needed the Chem plan because I was inspired by your site to build a dozen BFG transports out of It!

Welp, got the ship primed. It's nice to see it in a unified color, everything lines up well.

I also settled on a color scheme, something like this fella:

Which of course, means I primed... in the WRONG COLOR -_-

So I may be re-priming the back of the ship black. Drybrushing is the fastest way to paint something anyway, right?

Next up: some crew conversions, or painted ship. Whichever grabs me by the throat first.

Painted!

I can probably get more detail into the paint, but this is at least tabletop quality, and there's still MUCH to do for the campaign...
Oh and she has a name now, the Canterbury. Seems fitting, considering she's ancient and haunted.

Enough dawdling: all crews, to your stations!

Just sticking with imperial ships for now, or are there xenos ships lurking in the void?

Amazing, this is really giving me the itch to start building some chaos ships at this scale....

Rogue Trader RPG: Terrain / minis in Spaaaace... @ 2016/09/14 05:03:43

Post by: Ironhands.com

Thanks folks!

Yeah, will definitely be making some Xenos ships, Eldar and Orks first. Might try some Stryxis, Rak'Gol or Necrons later, who knows.
Agreed, Chaos ships at this scale could be a lot of fun- I want to make them all corrupted and horrific looking, of course!
Also, eyeballed scale and it looks like I can repurpose a buncha Starcrashers ships for smaller raiders, hulks, freighters, etc. So yay for that.

As to miniatures, I have a healthy collection of painted models to draw on for the PCs, will post pics of those later (promise!)
For now, here's some Armsmen and a Deck Officer I threw together to fill out the ranks during boarding skirmishes, planetfall, mutinies, etc.

The armsmen are converted 'Stealer Hybrids from Deathwatch: Overkill. The heads are mostly from Wargames Factory British Line Infantry (now sold by Warlord games, I guess).

The deck officer is a Skiitari body, legs from the British line infantry, and a head from Wargames Factory Spanish Cavalry.

Paint pending- gotta get back to the shipyards before they overload the plasma reactors again...

Thanks again for the kind words folks!

Now that I know the first ship is a Light Cruiser, I'm making some properly scaled Frigates next. WIP on the first one:

I figured out, by cutting some rounded wooden Hand Rail stock at an angle, I can bust out a good prow shape right quick (no compound curves, but still looks good). Will make it a cinch to crank out a couple more ships at this size and style.

Also pleased with these engines: metal knobs with rubber tank tread wrap, and the back of the hull has some Power Plant kit bits on it. Because Plasma should look dangerous.

And some BONUS CONTENT:

I wanted to print a nice Warrant of Trade prop for our game, so I cobbled this together in Photoshop.

I know you want one, so here's a clean version. I used the Crusades font, or you could print your RT's name by hand if you're a badass.

How does it scale vs. the previous ship?

Also, if you are making light escorts, you can’t just make one. They only come in flotillas! How many sister-ships do you have planned? Need at least one more.

Thanks folks!

Here's that Frigate painted:

And a scale shot of the two ships (plus a freighter model I borrowed from my Starcrashers set). Techpriest mini to show the size of the models (not in scale, of course!)

I also got the game area ready for our campaign. I think it turned out nice, plus the black bg makes it easier to photo ship battles and terrain and such.

Here's the finished Warrant of Trade (converted an old address book I got at the thrift store, plus a painted template from Dreadfleet):

And finally, an (apologetically blurry) photo of the minis we've selected so far for our PCs. Still need to make an Arch-Militant...

L to R: Navigator, Voidmaster, Astropath, Fire Warrior, Rogue Trader, Senechal, Explorator, Missionary.

Wish us luck on our first voyage into the void!

Thanks again everyone, glad I could inspire!

Our next game is already almost upon us, and I haven't even posted pics from the last one yet.
Wait, what's this doing here?

Our heroes, aboard the Epsion Octarius (Mechanicus Freighter), narrowly escape being rammed by the Red Corsair, a deadly pirate Raider.

Both ships were borrowed from my Starcrashers collection, but the Raider has gotten a major overhaul, especially the front end. More shots:

Finally reaching their destination, the ancient light cruiser Canterbury, they manage to dock...

... and venture inside. Nobody home- except some auto-defense programmed servitors!

Fortunately, the Explorator managed to shut them down and get the ship working (after getting lost in endless corridors of the Tenebro-Maze).

Oh yeah, new crew models for our FEMALE Seneschal, my completed Arch-Militant conversion, and a better Navigator model (the prior Navigator met an unfortunate end).

Next game promises some serious space battle action (now that I've streamlined the rules to my personal liking). Especially if I can get the Canterbury Bridge Set finished in time...

Thanks, glad to have more followers! Makes it all worthwhile...

Got the Bridge set painted:

The two round consoles on the lower deck have Tea Lights under 'em so they light up- one flickers, the other color cycles.

And in answer to the RT model question, Dark Soldier is correct- a Phinneus Shae figure from Warmachine. The Cygnar and Mercenaries have some great casters / solos that fit right in, so expect to see more at some point. Up next, another Frigate, a dangerously large Xenos ship in the works, and hopefully some painted armsmen so we can have proper boarding actions!

Travel safely, void brethren...

Thanks again folks!

Couple more ships in the works. Another Frigate (nearly done, paint pics coming soon!).

Gonna try a totally different color scheme for this one, much lighter. It just feels like an older, faster, lighter ship than the Huntress (the previous frigate).

And coming later, the first Xenos ship is in the works... turned out huge, so it's gonna be an Aurora class Eldar Cruiser. We'll see if I can fill out all that space with more shapes and details...

Now you’ve done it. If those filthy Xenos have a cruiser class ship, you need to make an imperial one to match it. You should probably one-up those pointy eared freaks and build a battlecruiser, just to ensure void superiority.

Hey,

Been wandering the Tenebro-Maze for a bit, but I'm back! No, I was not lost, it's just very dark and twisty down there in the mid decks...

Here's a couple shots of Footfall, the last (semi) civilized stop before the great expanse! Try not to get shivved while getting your supplies, folks.

And the Mechanicus crew have been laboring over a new project. Not to be outdone by the PC's ship, I started a Cruiser:

Takes a lot of detail to sell the scale. Gotta paint it, of course... Primed shots coming soon so you can see it all tie together.

Next up, finishing the Eldar Cruiser, and possibly some Eldar Ruins terrain!

Post by: Ironhands.com

Thanks folks!

TerrainWalker: Yes, the Ivory color.

First I spray with grey primer to subdue the colors of the materials- otherwise they tend to bleed through the white primer I put on next. If you spray mostly from the top with white, you even get a bit of free shading.

Then I mix up a light brown acrylic craft paint, with just a bit of water, and using a small house painting brush, I jam paint into all the crevices.

Then with paper towels, I dab off the excess paint from all the raised areas, leaving the model mostly white but tinted with just a hint of brown. You can get a similar result to a wash, but acrylic washes tend to bead up if you don't use a surface breaker (like dish soap). Ink washes dry too glossy for my liking.

I love enamel washes, as the paint thinner has lower surface tension, but they take forever to try, and the thinner EATS AWAY at your primer the whole time, where the acrylics do nothing to the primer, so you can be pretty rough with the application and damping.

Next I use a dark brown enamel wash, but just in the crevices I want to emphasize (between sections, in panel lines, etc). I also paint anything I want to be dark metallic with a dark brown enamel coat (like the engines). Then, I use a bronze enamel (you can mix steel and brass) to drybrush the dark brown metal parts.

Just a few detail colors can be applied to finish the model, like the gold, white, and red details I added. I use flat enamels, as they coat well, and have just a bit more gloss than acrylics, which can get chalky when dry.

Hope that helps! I'll try to take some progress shots next time I paint a ship this way. I actually used a similar technique to paint some Kroot (pics coming soon). The "jam-and-wipe" method is great for getting color onto something quickly, which is what I need when preparing lots of models for a campaign in progress

Ynneadwraith: YES, exactly why we ended up with Rogue Trader. I considered Dark Heresy and Deathwatch (even picked up books for 'em), and have run many many campaigns in the 40K setting before (Imperial Agents, Space Marines, Necromunda, even Chaos). But Rogue Trader is wonderfully liberating, by being set _against_ a galaxy of war instead of being about it. Plus, you get to be almost villainous, what with raiding alien worlds and making your own rules. We're having a grand time, with loads more adventures ahead. I think this one's a winner.

Very cool, the extended back makes the Taurox look less Chibi and the wheels are always an improvement. Which wheels did you use? They look like the ones from Blood and Skulls, I have 2 sets waiting to be used.

There's a tarp, they'll be fine.

hell by Imperial standards they don't even deserve the tarp.

Haha yeah, tarps are more than they deserve, right?

Shots of the completed truck, and some armsmen crew for scale. I wanted a military color, but I also wanted a thematic match with the blue color of the Canterbury (the PC's light cruiser), so I compromised on a blue-grey. And lots of weathering, of course.

We also had our second game on the Ork-infested planet Dross. The PCs shuttle was destroyed (and unlikely to escape the storm-wracked planet anyway), so they had to infiltrate an Ork fort and hitch a ride on the Hulk Rokkit the Orks were building. They even had to scour resources from all the wrecks on the planet and sneakily deliver them to the massive ork army to speed up the build process. Here's shots of them encountering the Fort, ambushing an Ork Trukk, and sneaking into the fort with the Ork Trukk, with the Hulk Rokkit in the background.

They made it back into space, but now the hard part: how do they get back onto their own ship, without the Orks discovering? The Orks might solve the problem by attempting to board the PC's ship, of course...

So this happened:

The Ork Rokkit targeted the Cruiser Canterbury, and impacted with a horrendous tearing crash. Orks stormed in through the breach, but the PCs at least found their way back to their ship...

Only by clearing the ruptured decks and venting them to space could the PCs rid themselves of the majority of the invading greenskins, and with enough concentrated firepower, managed to blow the drill ship in two...

The most powerful rival Rogue Trader equips his troops with armored void suits! I got some of the Forge World Solar Auxilia models to use as gothic Void Suit troops.

Here's a shot of the final conflict on an Eldar Maiden World- a 4 way battle between the PC Rogue Trader crew, their Rogue Trader allies (with mercenary Tau), armored Void Suit troops of a third, powerful Rogue Trader, and of course, the Eldar themselves come to protect their world. The PCs managed to escape with their lives, and some loot- but only just!

Thanks again for watching, and happy modeling and gaming endeavors to you all!

After what feels like Aeons lost in the darkest channels of the Webway, against all odds, the crew of the Argonaut, searching for the lost cruiser Canterbury, have managed to slip past the Great Rift and find themselves... in the Dark Imperium. Who is this new crew, and what drove them to such madness? More on that later, but it all starts with an attack by the Dark Eldar- for which I needed to make some ships of course!

I made these "Hellblade" Frigates thanks to a generous donation- a copy of Gangs of Commorragh, courtesy of our previous Navigator (thank you Mr. Horvath).

Here's the finished result, along with some "Nightgaunt" Raiders:

More tales of adventure and terror coming soon...

Thank you fellow travelers, good to be back!

A new story arc comes with some new characters and a new location. Meet the crew of the Argonaut, sent through the Jericho Warp Gate into the Jericho Reach to find Rogue Trader John Ramirez and his ship, the Canterbury...

Nite the Assasin, Jeremiah Mortis the preacher, The Navigator with no name, his accompanying Cyber-Crow named KAL, and Delta, a Mechanicus Explorator are hired by the Ramirez dynasty to track down their lost legacy.

Three Xenos explorers also join the group, each in their own way...

Tu'Staque, the Tau fire warrior that served John and his father before him, was separated from the Canterbury after fleeing the Dread Pearl's return to the warp. He is an obvious choice to join the search party, despite his Xenos status.

Iyandriel, an Eldar Corsair originally from Alaitoc Craftworld, sneaks aboard the Argonaut to find out more about the Dread Pearl and try to reclaim some of its precious Waystones taken from the world as loot by the Rogue Traders.

And GargShokka, an Ork Freebooter, whose "Kunnin' Plan" was to ambush a ship in the warp. The unfortunate victim was the Argonaut, and when the Gellar Field collapses and daemons invade the ship, everyone must band together to fend off eternal damnation! Thankfully, Jeremaiah's impressive negotiation convinces Gargshokka that traveling as an ally will yield better hunting grounds for the action-prone Gargshokka...

GAME 2: The Tantalus Anomaly

The Argonaut's emergency drop out of warp leaves it near a strange stellar anomaly, and an ancient Mechanicus research station in orbit. Tantalus station is run down, littered with heretical tech, and manned only by an insane Mechanicus and his necrotic servitors...

Desperate for a replacement Gellar Field Generator, Delta pulls the part he needs from a bizarre machine meant to turn the anomaly into a permanent warp gate. Although this prevents the creation of a gate into hell, it causes the collapse of the anomaly into a singularity! The Argonaut barely escapes in time...

Following a lead on the lost Rogue Trader and the Canterbury, the explorers investigate the rumoured location of a treasure known only as "the great Mother". Heading to an asteroid moon in orbit around Acheron 7, they find the wreck of the Daedalus precariously hanging off the edge of the asteroid.

In a nearby shuttle wreck, they find armsmen abandoned there by the Canterbury! They soon discover why- as they search the Daedalus and find other survivors, they are surrounded by Genestealers! They manage to get all the survivors back to their shuttle and leave the storm-wracked, creature-infested rock behind them....

Of course, once away, and while waiting to rendezvous with Charlabelle Armalan and the Amarathian, they are ambushed by Dark Eldar Raider ships!

The Drucharii board using ramming attacks and boarding torpedoes, and those crew who don't escape are captured...

Once aboard the Drucharii vessels, the explorers are forced to fight in the blood pits until they die- or escape...

Meanwhile, in the Drucharii labs, experiments are conducted- until an uninvited subject birthed from one of the captors bursts in!

The distraction allows the Raider explorer to escape with a companion (left), pursued by the Drucharii torturers (right). Note, this was before we had the new model for our Eldar corsair, so I was using old Dark Eldar models as placeholders.

Meanwhile Charlabelle finally shows up and rescues those who escaped the raiders, and manages to find a way into the Webway through an extraordinary connection between the Navigator and Kal, the Cybercrow... After rescuing the captives, the Amarathian barely manages to outrun her pursuers and escape the dark passages of the Webway...

Hey folks, thanks for the kind words, and sorry for the pause there, lots going on these days...

Using the new Primaris models, I made myself some "truescale" Deathwatch models to threaten the players with:

I bothered to edge highlight my blacks this time, so they came out nice. Helps having bigger models to paint!

Here's an action shot

Plus a scale shot with one of the classic Escher juves (most accurately proportioned model in GW, IMO):

When the Amarathian finds itself on the wrong side of the Great Rift, their first stop is an ancient and isolated Imperial Starport known as Morbastion Station.

The Imperial crew look for supplies and information, while the Xenos crew employ stealth to dig into the Librarium and find out more about the fate of the Canterbury.

That is, until a Deathwatch Cruiser docks at the station...

More to come soon.
Stay vigilant, voidfarers!

@Kid_Kyoto: The space station is from my Starcrashers game, made from Robotix parts. Find it at the bottom of this page, plus some other stuff that might look familiar
http://ironhands.com/starcrashmodels.htm

@fifty: Not _that_ fast at builds mind you, I have years of backlog to draw on / repurpose.

As promised, our campaign continues... Searching the captured reports of the Canterbury from Morbastion Station, the crew discover it has been operating in the Jericho Reach for... Centuries? The logs predate even the original adventures of Captain John Ramirez, who is as mystified as anyone. The next stop on the search for the Canterbury leads to a planet rumored to have Xenos treasure nearby- Falon's Lament, as likely a destination as any for the missing ship.

But when the shuttle tries to land, a beam of unearthly green light blasts it from across the horizon, and the crew barely survive the crash. Searching the surface, they find a world long abandoned by any sentient activity...

The crew soon find treasure aboard the ghost ships, crates full of metal obelisks like the one Jeremiah turned in to the Deathwatch Captain. But they also find something altogether more horrific when a Lictor ambushes from the water!

Another one snatches Gargshokka and pulls him underwater... Only by detonating a Frag Grenade he looted earlier was he able to break free and resurface!

The crew manage to get the ancient ship turret ready to fire, but it must be turned manually to aim it, requiring everyone's strength...

To prevent their rescue shuttle from being shot down, the crew must use the turret to disable a Necron Tower that rises out of the water before it can fire.

It is likely the world of Falon's Lament was targeted for invasion by the Tyranids, but Necron defenses drove them off, allowing only infiltration units onto the surface. Either way, the doom of the inhabitants was sealed, leaving only the strange obelisks behind as treasure...

As the adventurers are about to (re)discover the lost cruiser Canterbury, it was time to make some more interior terrain pieces. The ship is a Tenebro Maze, which means you literally get lost trying to go anywhere else in the ship. I set about making dozens of industrial and gothic ship sections to capture the random feeling of exploration...

These two pieces started as sections of a printer casing, and have all manner of 40k, model, hardware and toy embellishments added. Perfect for representing the lower mechanical sections of the ship...

I also set to making some gothic style sections to capture the upper sections of the ship, quarters, offices, labs, chapels, etc. I used a mix of the Pegasus Hobby Chapel parts and the new 40k gothic ruins. The ceiling pieces are made from portcullis gates stolen from the WizKids castle terrain.

To make the terrain more modular, I built separate removable desks, workbenches, control panels, and autoshrines.

Next post: painted and ready to go...

To escape the anomaly that consumed the Amarathian, the crew get the Canterbury warp engines running (Barely) and emergency warp away. When they come out, they are somewhere totally different- best guess by the star charts, a dead system known as Cressid. With nowhere else to go, and desperate for supplies and safe harbor, they send two shuttles down to investigate.

On arrival they discover a recently abandoned Tau outpost, with no signs of the former inhabitants. They encounter a pack of Kroot hiding in caves nearby, who explain something "unmade" the Tau and that the "Sky is death". Attempting to leave in one of the shuttles, a glaring beam of green light shoots it down! Best guess: Cressid is a Necron Tomb World, and the Tau scouts woke it up.

A new threat arrives, a scout ship, on fire plunging towards the surface, pursued by a Deathwatch Thunderhawk. It crashes, and Tau scout forces crawl from the wreckage, only to be engaged by the Deathwatch...

The Kroot join in the fight to protect their arriving allies.

The crew race to the crash site, and find themselves in the middle of a fight between the newly arrived Tau, the surviving Kroot, and the relentless Deathwatch Marines...

Casualties rise on all sides until the ground shakes violently, and a gaping rent in the earth swallows everyone...

Automatically Appended Next Post:
The survivors find themselves in a sinister alien corridor at the bottom of the collapse- a ribbed, metallic shaft, incredibly ancient, seemingly organic and machine both. Two Deathwatch Marines, two Tau, and the Canterbury Crew face off threateningly until the Priest Jeremiah and the Tau Tu'Staque convince everyone that there is a greater threat than all of them, and they must work together to have any hope of survival.

Splitting into two groups, they explore the tunnel in both directions, but skittering sounds can be heard in the darkness ahead...

Arriving in a massive chamber, Jeremiah and the Marines are soon ambushed by awakened Necrons! Only the ferocious firepower of the Marines can keep them at bay...

Deeper in the complex, More Necrons awaken and prepare to eliminate those who disturb their slumber.

The uneasy alliance locates the chamber containing the Laser Tower, fight their way to it, and ride it as it rises up out of the ground to shoot down the escaping Thunderhawk. The two fire at each other, destroying each other! The survivors can now escape in their remaining shuttle, as the Marines and Tau sacrifice themselves to ensure their escape. It is now the burden of the survivors to warn everyone of the new threat in the Jericho Reach...

Automatically Appended Next Post:
MAKING THE NECRONS

Just a few more shots of the Necrons and Terrain- I wanted to update the aesthetic, and was inspired by H.R. Giger's Biomechanoid style.

Here's some minis conversions, using guitar string wire for tubes, various skull heads, and alternative weapon mixes. To make the Immortal more horrific, I went for a melee build, and used arms and legs from Genestealers to get that Giger look.

Here's some painted shots. I primed with Bronze, and used lots of dark brown and red washes.

As to terrain, I made the tunnels out of 3" Corrugated drainpipe. I cut one side open, used floor shims to make the floor plates, and used furniture end caps, wire sheathing, and plastic skull rings to decorate the walls. The ends of the tubes are finished with tentacle sections from the old Matrix Sentinel toy.

Using a mix of old and new terrain, I managed this ensemble to represent the underground tomb. I'm sure we'll be seeing Necrons again as a threat for the campaign, so it's nice to have a head start on the models!

Be safe out there, fellow voidfarers.

Thanks folks! Yeah, my Thunderhawk is an old project, you can read about it more here: http://ironhands.com/thawk.htm

Our next stop was to get some desperately needed Crew for the Canterbury. The closest candidate is the Feudal World of Cressid. If any world could survive being cut off from the Imperium, it would be a feudal world. Things there were still pretty grim though- the ruling class were witch hunters, so our Navigator and Xenos crewmembers needed to be very careful there!

The Xenos relied on stealth (and the city sewers) to get around unnoticed.

The Preacher however took the bold approach and headed directly to the governor's fortress prison... only to be imprisoned for heresy!

Those who weren't imprisoned managed to stage a prison break, only to discover the other prisoners were indeed Heretics- and worse!

After exterminating the heretics, the crew managed to convince the Governor that they could detect heresy with their Cybercrow (but actually by the Navigator's psychic augury). After assisting the Governor in a pogrom of purges and executions killing thousands, those that remained were ideal candidates to join the crew of the Canterbury...

Next order of business, repairing the Canterbury, which has taken grievous damage over the ages (and most recently from the Necrons). The crew discover a little known knight-turned-forge world, Inferro IX, and investigate. The world seems hostile though, and only impressive piloting skills keeps the Canterbury from being captured by tractor rays. The planet broadcasts nothing but noise, and deadly scrap code hidden in the noise. But is there another signal, hidden even deeper? A cry for help, in an obsolete Mechanicus code- perhaps someone on the world has not descended into Tech-Heresy..

The crew decide to rescue the Loyalist survivors, their best shot at being able to maintain the Archeotech of the Canterbury.

The crew set out, searching the endless sprawl of mazelike industrial decay searching for the loyalist survivors and fending off attacks from scrap servitors, and worse.

The crew finally find the loyalists, a band of Skitarii led by a Techmarine who drive off the Hereteks and lead the crew to their hidden lair in the bowels of the machinery. There they enlist the crew's help reactivating an ancient Warhound Titan, in the hopes it will provide enough cover fire for their escape...

The Hereteks unleash Daemon Engines to try to stop them, and the metal canyons echo with the roar of Plasma and Blood...

The Skitarii and Crew make a mad dash for the Shuttle, but a Scrap Beast ambushes from below! Gargshokka attacks, destroying the gantries and plunging the Scrap Beast into the depths below. Only with everyone's combined efforts do they all make it into the shuttle...

What'd you use to build the really tall walls at the back?

Rogue Trader RPG: Terrain / minis in Spaaaace... @ 2019/04/19 04:46:17

Post by: Ironhands.com

Hey there Mythos,

Yeah, those walls are just big flat pieces of Fiberboard, with lots of cardboard squares glued on, plus some plastic ring bits and some composite leveling shims to add detail. I primed them with various shades of grey, and did a thorough weathering job on them with different shades of brown and rust. They're incredibly useful, I've used them for large features in all of my campaigns (Votoms, Gamma World, Gundam, and now Rogue Trader). You can see one of their earliest appearances at the bottom of this Votoms campaign log: http://ironhands.com/v2camp09.htm

Up next, finally getting around to building more ships... this time for the Orks!

Starting small, here's a Raider that I made from some funny parts, mainly a Quake action figure torso, a Mechwarrior vehicle figure, and a Rocket Bike type deal from Skylanders, plus loads of detail bits and weapons from various models (mostly Ork). I liked this style so much I ended up making three different versions, more on that later.

At the other end of the spectrum, this Heavy Cruiser came together in true Orky fashion- I just kept adding engines and guns until there wasn't room for any more!

This is the "Braaghdsidez" side- I just kept adding more cannons, only Gork knows why.

This side has guns too though, so don't think you can be sneaky gitz:

And is that a Griffon Heavy Mortar sticking out of the front of that Ork ship?

Rogue Trader RPG: Terrain / minis in Spaaaace... @ 2019/05/02 02:37:08

Post by: Ironhands.com

Yeah, finally found a use for that Griffon Mortar

OK, the crew follow coordinates into the Slinnar Drift looking for Orks to recruit, and end up getting ambushed!

They somehow evade the Drilla ship, which drills THROUGH an asteroid and destroys it, circling slowly for another pass. Meanwhile, Gargshokka and TuStaque sneak aboard the ork Raida, looking for the Boss so they can establish dominance in the Ork Fleet.

TuStaque's stealth attacks, combined with the Navigator's mental attacks, weaken the Boss, allowing Gargshokka to defeat him and become the new Boss!

At some point the crew will encounter even more Orks, and good news, we're ready with the models

So there's more Xenos ships in the works, pics coming soon, but I wanted to revisit one of my older Imperial ships... this one in particular:

I never really liked the giant slab of gothic wall stuck on top, so I removed it, and replaced it with some nifty turrets made from electrical connectors and bases. I snuck a few more guns on the side somewhere too. Result:

We've reclassified our ships recently, so the "Divine Retribution" is now a BATTLESHIP in our campaign. Well, it hasn't shown up YET, thankfully, but boy, when it does.... yikes.

That ship reminds me ofPuff The Magic Dragon, the Vietnam era gunship.

Thanks all!

Yeah Theophony, it certainly has a lot of guns

Up next, an ancient evil stirs in the cold depths of the eastern fringe...

Continuing the "biomechanoid" aesthetic I strived for with my latest Necron Minis, this ship is clearly influenced by Giger (and even includes bits of an Alien playset toy). Here's some in-process shots- you can see I made a last minute change to the engines. With this aesthetic established, more Necron ships are on the way!

Cheers, fellow Voidfarers!

Next on our crew's agenda, locating the elusive TAU fleet and attempting an alliance. An advance fleet was indeed found...

Unfortunately, the Tau are discovered while under attack from the crew's OTHER new ally, the ORKS, and have to intercede for the greater good...

The Cruisers are built mostly out of parts from a Robotix toy kit, embellished with various toy and model parts, including bits of AT-43 Karman models since I had a bunch from a sale.

The LIght Cruiser is a mix of more Robotix parts, and a Micromachines Republic Cruiser which I rearranged in an attempt to disguise its origin. Painting it orange helped too.

Safe Travels,

Amazing Tau ships! The Star Wars ship is hidden quite nicely.

What are those little turrets/tanks in the front of the two cruisers?

Rogue Trader RPG: Terrain / minis in Spaaaace... @ 2019/06/23 17:23:18

Post by: Ironhands.com

Thanks all! The turret vehicles are Wizkids Mechwarrior Glory fire support tanks. I got a bunch of the MW stuff cheap at some point, it’s handy for stuff like my Gundam games to have some vehicles / infantry at that scale.

Up next: An ancient legend finally revealed. The Iron Jager is the battleship awarded to Orlando Ramirez alongside his warrant of trade, last seen heading into the Hadex Anomaly for reasons unknown…

This ship is a converted Space Battleship Yamato toy. I added broadsides and replaced the conspicuous Wave Motion Gun front end with something a bit more gothic. Other details were added and the whole thing painted grey. The players encounter this ship when they venture into the Hadex Anomaly for a “family reunion”…

Here's a shot of all the Imperial ships together.

Safe travels, and keep one eye on the Navigator, he's been acting strange lately...

GOSH THAT SHIP LOOKS FAMILIAR, BUT I CAN'T PUT MY FINGER ON IT.

Mayhaps it is the motion of the warp waves which confused my addled mind.

Haha, yeah, thanks folks- the original toy does most of the work.

Here's a shot of some of the FX we used for the Hadex Anomaly game in which it appeared, including color lights, smoke machine, and lightning sound and light FX.

Sorry for the delay in transmissions, hard to get anything out of the Dark Imperium, but we're back!

In the Hadex Anomaly, the crew meet the captain of the Iron Jager- Orlando Ramirez himself! He returned to the Hadex Anomaly to be with his lost wife (and mother of John Ramirez). Jeremiah reveals his true heritage as the bastard son of Orlando, and John decides to stay with his parents, sacrificing himself to create an escape route for the Canterbury... Now in possession of the Warrant of Trade, Jeremiah takes on the legacy of the Ramirez Rogue Traders...

Meanwhile, the Tau fleet, relocating to the Feudal World liberated earlier by the Canterbury, reports deadly raid attacks in their system. The Alliance investigates, hoping to find the Drucharii spoken of in the prophecy, but when they arrive, they discover AeldarCorsairs- the very ones that Iyandriel estranged when he first set out to find the Canterbury.

The Allies must protect the Tau frigates and broker a truce with the Aeldari Raiders. How do they do it? Gargshokka and Iyandriel lead a boarding action on the Aeldari Light Cruiser, of course!

Iyandriel shares the prophecy with the captain of the Corsairs, who begrudgingly agree the necessary course of action is to share the fate of the Allied fleet and somehow stop the Necrons and Tyranids dooming the Jericho Reach...

Here's more shots of the Baharroth, and a scale shot with the Aeldar Battleship.

And WIP shots of the build. This one went together surprisingly quick!

Loving all those ships mate, stunning work. Going to have to steal some of those ideas!

What do you use for lighting your pics? I find it amazingly difficult to get any sort of decent pics of my little ships.

All the creativity and use of bits with these ships is brilliant, must be great fun gaming with your group.

Thank you all for the kind words- it makes my inner Mechanicus happy knowing that I could inspire

@ingtaier: Most of my lighting is just daylight coming in through the high window near our game table, mixed with some overhead lamp if need be. I sometimes use tea lights, flashlights, and colored LED lights for effects, so I'll dim the main lighting to make those show up better.

Where did we leave off then? Ah yes...
The Canterbury attempts to shanghai more crew from the Penal world of Vathor, but when they arrive, the penal colony is already gutted- likely by Tyranids! The Divine Retribution shows up and blames the Canterbury for the dead colony, until everyone is interrupted by a sudden Necron attack!

The Divine Retribution and Necron ship engage in a ferocious melee, and members of the Deathwatch make their way to the Canterbury where a diabolical plan is enacted to follow the Necron ship to... wherever they go when damaged. The crew force the Navigator to board the Necron ship, and use Kal the Psy-crow to track him across space and time...

Following the Navigator's psychic spoor leads the Canterbury back to Falon's Lament. But no sign of the Necron ship anywhere... Kal leads the crew to the planet's surface- and BELOW.? As they ponder how to get INSIDE the planet, a Tyranid Hive Fleet arrives, showering living death across the surface!

The crew manage to make it to a damaged tower, possibly Necron in origin, that leads below the surface. Only the valiant efforts of the Deathwatch and Gargshokka's Orks allow them to escape slavering death.

Meanwhile, the Stowaway Navigator and his Bodyguard- Nite the Assassin and Tu'Staque in his stealth suit- find their way out of the Necron ship. They then realize the sheer scale of the cave they find themselves in... it could only be INSIDE the planet!

TO BE CONTINUED...

As the Navigator and his bodyguard make their way through the dark, eerie tombs, the Rogue Trader and his entourage make it below the surface- only to awaken ancient horrors! The accompanying Deathwatch buy them time as they look for some way to redeem themselves from the Tyranid Horrors above and the lurking horrors below....

Eventually they find an ominous chamber that begins to awaken with power, attended by Tomb Spyders. Something big is happening, but it is not clear what until Delta detects the Necrons literally drawing energy from the nearby sun and using it to incinerate the planet surface- including the Canterbury and her ally ships!

Gargshokka charges in, distracting the Tomb Spyders from their task and driving them against the machine.

Meanwhile Iyandriel leaps onto the Tomb Lord's back and starts pulling out cables and hoses in an attempt to stop it.

But deep in inside the Canterbury, Earnest, the strange little creature that's been with the crew since the Heretek outpost at Tantalus V, has been busy rewiring the ship's Warp Generator into a terrible new machine meant to convert the star energy into a Warp Rift! Delta discovers this too late to stop it...

...And Falon's Lament, the Necron Tomb, the invading Hive Fleet, and alll of our heroes are sucked into the warp!

Up next: the dramatic conclusion!

Our heroes find themselves inside the Hadex Anomaly, and this time they aren't alone! Necron and Tyranid ships tear at each other, fueled by the madness that surrounds them.

The very blood of the Tyranid ship mutates into unspeakable horrors that swim through space towards the alliance ships, while the Navigator's mind finally shatters and exclaims "I'm home"...

A glowing orb that could be the heart of the Hadex Anomaly appears, and mind-killing monstrosities begin to pour forth from it...

But our heroes find they aren't alone in their fight- the phantom battleship Iron Jager materializes and charges towards the anomaly, while the Gobskragga attempts to drill into it like cracking a nut. The Canterbury rams one of the Necron ships into the anomaly, and it begins to disintegrate, weakening the anomaly and creating what might be a hole...

The very fabric of reality torn asunder, the allied fleet bursts forth into realspace- and finds themselves back on the Imperium side of the Great Rift. But they also realize, with horror, that they have created a new hole in reality- a warp storm as deadly as the Eye of Terror...

And thus our campaign comes to its conclusion! Hope you've enjoyed our exploits.
