You have my attention! The Privateer Press wet palette is the best painting aide I've ever discovered, even with my meager skills, so I'd definitely consider this.
I've had problems with my wet palette getting gross when I'd leave it shut and damp for days/weeks on end. So I'm not sure never drying out is really a feature.

Put a couple of old, copper, pennies under the sponge - it prevents the grossness.

Using distilled water in the wet palette will help prevent mold and mildew growing inside it too.

Interesting - am curious as to how/why that works? I'd be surprised if I had any pennies that old though.

Yeah, I always painted with bottled/filtered water.

Yea, given the many tutorials available on Dakka about how to make your own wet pallet, I'm really not sure of the value here.
I've used a bunch of different wet palettes. Most of them are subpar. This one looks pretty slick. The membrane they are using looks super easy to clean and paint stays usable much longer. I've used distilled water, tried the penny trick, and my palette still gets moldy. As long as this comes in under $20, I'm in.

Copper is a natural anti-microbial agent which has been used for such purposes for a long time. While this site has a vested interest in bigging up the effect of copper, an exploration of the mechanics involved can be read at: http://www.antimicrobialcopper.org/uk/how-it-works
The trick, as The Auld Grump mentioned, is that you need something with fairly high copper content to work. Pennies are really zinc with a thin coating of copper alloy put over top and thus aren't really good; there's not much copper for the bacteria to come into contact with. If you have old pennies (pre-1982 according to Google), you'll have better success as they're mainly copper. Absent any of those lying around, you could also try copper plates for etching, but those are radically more expensive than the few cents the "old penny" method would cost.
On the actual topic, as others have said if the price is right I might be in for this. Seems quite well-done versus cobbling something together.

You sure its not just black mold in the house
honeslty though im very curious about the membrane
its going to be worthless if metal flakes from something like vallejo air steel gets embedded in it.

I guess Spring in Australia starts in October or something.

I'll grant you there's not much time left, but the generally agreed upon date for the end of Spring in the Northern Hemisphere is June 21st this year which is somewhat unsurprisingly the Summer Solstice. While I'm curious if Finland has unilaterally decided to use different definitions of the seasons given their closeness to the pole, I'm skeptical that's any sort of official definition.
So they have 9 days to launch and still be in the Spring.

Oh question. how does it handle sparkly metallic paint. is the material absorbent? will i have to deal with the odd sparkles now and again?
Hello there, The material is not absorbent but let the water go through it. I have tested our membrane with a lot of metallic paint and everything is ok. No sparkles left after a quick cleaning. In a few days, I will post a complete presentation of our membrane.

Hi, You don't have to worry about metal flakes from the vallejo range or any range actually. Nothing gets embedded in our membrane.

$40 still seems like a lot for a palette, but I'm still intrigued and will an eye on this.
a4 sized isnt bad at all.
though would love a smaller sized one for my portable hobby box.
but the price is probably too high for something I can recreate myself even if it does mean replacing sheets of paper frequently
but i'll wait and see the actual ks before saying no thanks for certain
Yeah, the wet palletes I've made and used at home have done quite well, this is going to have to show me something really really special to convince me.
I'm keen, and I'll probably back, but two things I gotta say:
1) you've been previewing this for an awfully long time around the internet, and now it doesn't even launch until August. I'm kinda over the whole "coming soon!" thing, and..., well, it's not really coming that soon. It's just a wet palette, I think it's been just a *little* overhyped.
2) €35 is a rip-off, I think you know that. I get it - it's the best price you could do for the materials and manufacturing you want to use. I know you haven't set out to be expensive, but this really is expensive for what it is. But now I'm at an age where I'm happy to purchase anything hobby related that takes my fancy, I'll no doubt go in on this. But the temptation to save a wad of cash with a take-out container and a sponge will be too great for many I'm sure. Which is a shame. I hope you succeed guys, I really do, but you've set a challenging price point for yourselves.
Sincerely, good luck - from a near-certain backer.

I agree 100%.
I can also afford to pay 35€ just to have a better looking/cooler/slightly less bothersome wet palette. But if I was at a point where I had to choose between that and a box of minis, I would always go for the minis.
I like the idea of this, be interested by the reviews, my issue is the price is a bit high and things like spares, I have had sponges perish before and what the membrane will be like in a year or so from now.

Hello,
Creating something which haven't done before is quite challenging. Our membrane is not a mere "parchment paper" but a high-tech, reusable membrane. So yes it takes time to achieve a well done product. so we preferred to take the time necessary to be ready before the launch, leave time for independent reviews in July/August and actually shorten the delivery time at the end.
Today, we wanted to show you, The FOAM. I'm sure , you don't like stinky wet palette, full of mildew and mold. Well, we don't like them either. That's why, our foam doesn't allow the growth of mold. The one, I'm using in this video, is 3 months old and it's still in mint condition.
Hi, I read you can use the lid as a wet palette aswell, how does that work as far as sealing it to keep the paint for the next session? Im guessing you have to wipe the lid one off?
Jonp wrote: Hi, I read you can use the lid as a wet palette aswell, how does that work as far as sealing it to keep the paint for the next session? Im guessing you have to wipe the lid one off?
Hello,
If you want to keep your everlasting wet palette for another session, in your fridge or not, you can only do it with the bottom wet palette. The top lid is only an additional wet palette than can be used in the same session. But with the bottom wet palette you already have a working surface larger than most wet palette in the market. V.
The manufacturer sent us the final 3D rendering.
Mold manufacturing are really expensive so it will start only if the campaign is succesful.
The manufacturer is currently making one prototype for validation, after that the box is ready for production.
Dimensions are 14cm x 19 cm x 2,6 cm High quality ABS plastic.
A lot of questions emerged regarding the airtight seal. The final prototype looks quite promising.
Once we have the final prototype in hand, we will conduct a series of test to determine if the seal is as tight as needs be and easily operable.
Yeah, I'm in the same space. $40 for something helpful isn't a big deal.
I'm a bit blue in the face over "the KS is coming soon" stuff.
I can't picture any stretch goals that would be very interesting.
So, I've been hearing about this thing for months. The KS will run for a month'ish, putting the end around mid Sept. I assume it will be made in China, so tack 6 months for delivery. I'd maybe get it in April. And I feel like I've been hearing about it for a long time, which makes the KS cycle seem longer to me.
Won't be backing because of the bad taste, but might buy one at my FLGS
The Kickstarter campaign will be postponed to September 19th at 7 PM CET.
After struggling for months with production constraints, we are unfortunately far from having the reusable membrane ready.
But don't worry, we will launch the campaign nonetheless, and without waiting for months. We had planned an entry pledge at 25€ without the membrane, but with 100 sheets of custom hydration paper instead. At this price, you will have all of our great features and most of the hydration performance thanks to the foam.
So be ready for the painter pledge at 25€ on Septembre 19th!
See the presentation video here.
Meanwhile, the test samples are being sent and we will keep you updated as soon as we have reviews!
A new beginning for Everlasting Wet Palette at 25€
As we stated in our previous newsletters, the box is great and the foam is bringing a lot of good to the setup, but we had been struggling with the membrane.
We had identified a very good membrane. It was however very fragile when used on its own, as it has limited tensile strength. We needed to add a backing to the setup to reinforce it.
Since then, we had been trying to obtain reinforced samples.
Unfortunately, after trying with a lot of different companies, the production samples we have received are far from meeting our expectations: hydration was negatively impacted as well as cleaning. And unless we committed to insane production quantities (worth 500 000 palettes...), the suppliers were unwilling to proceed to extensive tests with the exact setup we requested. Even if we committed, the suppliers would not give us any guarantee on the results.
All in all, our work ethic prevents us from collecting fund for something that we are not 100% sure to be able to provide to our backers, in a reasonable time frame.
We therefore decided to take one step at a time, and we will launch the Everlasting Wet Palette with the Painter Pledge only, with 100 sheets of hydration paper instead of the membrane. This allows us to provide you with the palette at a reduced price of 25€.
Painter pledge - 25€ :
- One of our great airtight case
- 2 of our very resistant and smooth foams in white/very light gray
- 100 sheets of hydration paper
- our wavy well palette and brush holder accessory for free
We know some of you will be disappointed, and you can imagine how disappointed we were.
But while not as ambitious as our initial objective, we realised that the resulting wet palette solves a lot of our common painters' problems and is softer on the price :
- a really airtight case
- improved ergonomics
- totally flat and better hydrated palette area
- possibility to double the painting area up to near A4 size
- no more mold or bad smell on the sponge
- innovative well palette
- a nice design
Of course, we have not given up on the reusable membrane! We will take the time necessary to find a solution. It could take a few month, or a year, but when it's available, every backers will have the possibility to order a membrane, compatible with its box, with free shipping!
A new launch day and time : Tuesday Septembre 19th - 7PM CET
The project was postponed a few weeks to let sufficient time for reviewers to post about the palette.
The Kickstarter will start Tuesday Septembre 19th - 7PM CET.
That is :
Paris time: 7PM/19:00
London time: 6PM
New York Time: 1PM
San Francisco time: 10AM
Tokyo time: 2AM(next day)
Sydney time: 3AM(next day)
We have a date, we have a time and we have palettes! Nothing can stop us now.
The test samples are being sent to reviewers!
The test samples are being sent, we will keep you updated as soon as we have any news to communicate on this front.
So compared to Army Painter palettes this thing turns out to be aprox. 50% more expensive. More if you actually want that special membrane which, imo, is the entire point of the thing in the first place.
I'm not overly excited about the Army Painter palette so I actually MIGHT back this, but the lack of the membrane is a real kicker.
I was pretty disappointed when I saw the email.
The reusable membrane was the only selling point for me. Without it it's just a pretty tupperware.
In the end I don' think I'll be backing them.
Schmapdi wrote: Yeah - $40 for a basic wet palette without the special membrane (which I too thought was the point) is a no brainer hard-pass. Am sorry to say.
It's actually 25€. They lowered the price accordingly.
My disappointment is amplified by the fact that I've been waiting for this KS for so long. But honestly, I've been waiting so long for this "coming soon" KS, that another couple of months to get the membrane issue sorted isn't really that big of a deal anymore.
Guys - I still wish you the best and I will still probably back. I know you must be disappointed too that you're not delivering the product you wanted to, but if you'd perfected your product *before* you plastered your "Coming Soon!" promos everywhere, you could possibly ave avoided this. Anyway, honestly, good luck, I hope you get funded.
Schmapdi wrote: Yeah - $40 for a basic wet palette without the special membrane (which I too thought was the point) is a no brainer hard-pass. Am sorry to say.

I thought it was that membrane which was the whole point of this. Without that, you're basically paying $30-ish for something you could make with some Tupperware, sponge, and waxed paper for $5 or less.
This whole thing seems like buying a foam tray from Battlefoam to carry your tools and paint pots in - there's no point, but people do it anyway.
Yep, I basically agree.
The membrane was what set this thing apart from its competitors - now why should I wait several months for a an expensive product that I have no way of knowing if it works like promised if i can get a Sta-Wet or whatever its called for less?
Without the membrane, this thing is just a somewhat expensive variant of a wet palette that competes with established products.
So the same sized wet pallet is $10 on amazon and would be about another $20 for 100 replacement sheets so $30 is what you could spend and get one right now but you'd be missing out on the lid being a pallet too.
Even if you make your own I really do like the sheets designed for wet pallets more then other material.

For a long time, the creator has said the "everlasting membrane"
KS is just around the corner. It feels like I've been reading about this since White Dwarf issue #94.
Now, the "everlasting membrane" is off the table. And the KS is delay further.
So, it is a KS for a foam wet palette. I can already buy a bunch of those and get them today.
They couldn't even get their act together enough to get the unique feature after announcement after announcement. My opinion is based on how they ran the hype machine for this KS, the actual campaign would be a disaster.
Um, it's not even a KS yet. Damn these guys for being upfront and honest before they start crowdfunding. Seems like you are damned if you do, and damned if you don't. I agree the price is a bit steep and they announced a way too early, but give them a break. They didn't do all that after they had your money. They can't get the samples they need. How is it on them?
Review sounds good, but I will need to see some more before deciding on anything.
Also, since the Kickstarter was delayed, how long will you expect the actual project to take? It seems like you have most of the things ready, except for the membrane.
3D printing the cases, and packing them with the foam and paper shouldn't take too long, right?

Hello, You are right, everything is ready. Still, production will take about 3 to 4 months + shipping, customs clearance. We expect to deliver the product under 6 months time. V.
Yeah see the review says it's better than home-made, but I'm looking at that and seeing nothing I can't do myself for a fraction of the price.
You can buy a very similar kind of rubberfoam-sponge in supermarkets for pennies, a tupperware container provides the same extended usage time and again costs almost nothing, and in years of using a wet palette I've never had the sponge go manky because I keep the container clean and use distilled water. The only advantage it has is the sheets come pre-cut and stored flat rather than rolled, but for my money saving a few seconds by not having to cut out and opposite-roll a piece of paper isn't worth paying literally 10+ times the cost of a home made palette.
I don't like gaking on startups' efforts, but if you're going to claim you're pushing a revolutionary product it kinda needs to actually be revolutionary.
That review looks promising. All those wrinkles on the palette make Thairne GO MAD!
Luckily we got enough time to get more reviews in before the KS ends.
I actually have a Sta-Wet palette from Masterson on the way from Amazon. I've wanted to try using one for a long time now, figured it was time. Then directly after everything was shipped I found this forum post. I think this one looks very promising, but if there are many months until we actually get them in hand, then I will need that other palette in the meantime anyway.
Looking forward to more reviews and stretch goals.
I have the P3 one. It works fine and was an ok price with a simple purchase and ship experience as opposed to a KS-style wait.
Anyway.
It might be appropriate at this point for either the OP or a Mod to change the title of this thread to "WET PALETTE KS COMING SOON" since the "everlasting" part is clearly off the table right now...

That's incredibly pedantic. It's not off the table because 'Everlasting Wet Palette' is still the name of the product whether people agree with that descriptor or not.
See also: Everlasting Gobstoppers. Which, last I checked, just seem to last forever because gross.

I disagree with this being "incredibly pendantic".
If they stick with the name "everlasting" they will be perpetuating a lie, garnering possible purchases based on old info that is no longer valid.
For my part, I was going to get this solely because of the "everlasting" membrane that they went on and on about in their hypetrain, as I do not have access to all your foreign (to me) fancy parchment papers everyone is banging on about in their wet palette videos and I have yet to find a good domestic paper to use for this (they all wick too much water and makes the paint thinner and thinner until useless).
The "everlasting" feature was this product's unique value proposition, and without it it is just an overpriced fancy plastic box with some bits in it, whatever the name is.
With that off the table, the name is misleading and this product no longer has my interest.
Oh, my pedantic comment was about needing to change the thread title. The product name should change to illustrate that this is a different product than the 'Everlasting' palette they initially announced. If the product name changes then the thread title should. Until then the thread title is an accurate representation of the name of the product as it is being sold.
I'm being kind of a pedant, myself. I am not a great person.
That aside I was only sort of following this. What about the membrane made it so special? I've been using a sponge wet palette for years and have been completely satisfied with only having to add some water every other day or so. Presumably the 'Everlasting' membrane would prevent water from evaporating for longer?
Different strokes for different folks, but I think homemade palettes suck. I don't even like the Masterson palette I have. I like this because it's more compact and air tight. I was a pass, but I've come around the past week (mostly because frustrations with my current palette).
I don't care much about the everlasting membrane. I've been using the same piece of paper I'm my palette for almost 4 months. I flipped it once, but it's still fine. Honestly them removing the membrane and dropping the price is why I'm backing. Thought it was too much before. It's still pricey, but I like the design of it.
The idea was they had some magic material that removed the need for paper towel (or foam) and parchment paper that is a "normal" / DIY wet pallet. Their material was re-usable and a bunch of other things.
The basic idea was buy their expensive wet pallet and you'd not have to buy consumables again or rarely.
It was a good idea. But, they couldn't deliver on that. After talking about this special feature for about a year.
What they are kickstarting is a foam pallet. So, if you give them upfront $ now you have a chance of getting your pallet many months from now.

Except that the consumables have negligible cost so you'd never actually see any savings over just tossing a sponge into a tub of water and putting wax paper over it.

A very expensive palette with zero advantage over anything already on the market. They're basically offering a no-name in a fancy wrapper and saying it's a Rolls Royce.
I'm suspicious that the real goal of this kickstarter is simply to recoup money they've already sunk into this effort and possibly even put a buck or two in their pockets if it all works out. All good and well for them but I fail to understand why anyone would actually back this, especially given the many easy and immediate ways to make your own. At this point, you're just overpaying for a fancy plastic case and a rubber band.
The membrane was supposed to be re-usable, but it would also have been different than normal parchment paper.
All the parchment papers I've tried so far have issues with some paints. Especially with the VMA metallics and VMA in general: if I let them sit in my palette for too long they become too watery. And in general, some paints hold up better than other over time.
Changing the porous material between the water reservoir and the paint could very well fix some of these issues. And as their membrane was drastically different than parchment paper, I had hope I would actually see improved performances with some paints, which is the main purpose of the palette.
Having a re-usable, well designed and good looking palette was just a bonus, so that if the palette ended up quite similar to other ones (in term of performances), it wouldn't be a total loss.

FYI parchment paper is called "sandwich paper" (smörgåspapper) in Sweden and I assume in Norway as well?

yes, that is what I have been using ("matpakkepapir") with very varying results. There was a brand that was much better than most others, but they changed and became crappy.
I need a paper type that wicks less water. going to try using some plastic over it tonight. see it that helps.
Well that is disheartening. From the pictures of the first review it seemed to me that the actual paper covered 99% of the sponge's surface, not wasting room.
In this vid you can actually see that the paper does not fit that well.
I don't know.. if it would be available now, I would probably get it. But waiting for half a year...
Guess it all depends on the stretch goals.

Not waxed papers - waxed papers, in fact, miss the whole point of a wet palette, being impermeable to water.
Parchment paper/baking parchment/sandwich paper is moderately permeable.
I have been using a homemade wet palette for years now - the paper lasts a decent amount of time, and is not exactly expensive.... (And a copper penny in the corner to keep it from getting manky.) My wife and I have not come close to going through the whole roll yet.
This project kind of lost all momentum when what had been the main selling point was removed from the equation - I think they may be better off putting it on a back burner until they can get the 'everlasting' part to work right.
Painter size, 15 by 20 cm, made for miniature painters looking for a good sized palette, that is compact and easy to carry. It's perfect for small to medium sized paint stations. Painter Everlasting Wet Palette can be extended using the top lid as a side Palette.
Studio size, 20 by 30 cm, made for Pros and Enthusiasts looking for a huge painting area. It's perfect for medium to large sized paint stations. Studio Everlasting Wet Palette can also be extended using the top lid as a side Palette.
Meg Maples doesn't like it, she says in the comments it feels the same as P3 paper and that standard baking paper is better. Honestly I have no idea why anyone would buy this instead of a) buying the same product right now from another manufacturer or b) just using a plastic container and baking paper... she did say she'd buy it just for the container and foam for a lower price, jut use another paper I suppose.

My bad. I call pretty much all culinary related paper "waxed paper". I'll be more careful in the future.
Personally, I use the paper that you get from those rolls of adhesive stickers. I wouldn't buy a roll of stickers for the paper, mind you, but if you have a use for the stickers then it's a two-for-one type of deal. Recycling at its finest.

This. Parchment/baking paper all the way. I couldn't believe how well it worked the first time I tried it.
(Although I've found it doesn't work great for metallics.)
I've been using a free plastic wet wipes container with a 20 cent sponge and parchment paper from my kitchen for all eight years of my painting career and probably spent less than two dollars total, ever. I cannot for the life of me imagine why someone would buy this.
A roll of baking paper (200+ sqft) goes for only $13 or so. That's nearly twice as many sheets (if you cut to the same dimensions) for about 1/3rd the price.
I see nothing about the (in)famous membrane that would be reusable, hence the name "Everlasting". I know some issues came up amd ot won't be available right now, but I would have atleast expected to see a stretch goal for the membrane?
The hydration papers look good, and they could act as nice backups if the membrane broke or couldn't be used at that very moment, so you pull out a paper instead. This seemed like the whole point of the palette, but there is nothing about it on the page, as far as I can see. There is a lot of meaningless fluff and buzzwords though, like all Kickstarter projects.

Impermeable papers will work just fine for a pallet - just not for a wet pallet.
My good lady uses a porcelain pallet that is older, I think, than she and I combined - a Windsor & Newton from around 1880. (She is back in school - going to the Maine College of the Arts. She is... less than impressed with the sushi package with folded flannel and baking paper that I use.)
Dragons Lair Minis wrote: Why would you back this when you can get the same thing already for cheaper immediately?
You are risking your money to get something that already exists. If you really wanted this one, just wait for retail.
Yeah, without the membrane thing it's really nothing awesome... you can get a sponge and an airtight tupperware knockoff for a few bucks. But... the Kickstarter is already funded, so I guess they hit a spot for people who just want this kind of thing without cutting a sponge or something. I don't know. Good for the creators I guess.
ced1106 wrote: Because you assume it works, will be delivered in time, will be delivered, and a better product won't be available by the time it gets delivered. Duh!
Exactly, best case scenario you get what you wanted in 6 months time and everything is fine and dandy. Or you could pay half the price and get what you want right now.
Worst case scenario you don't get anything. Or you could pay half price and get what you want right now. It just doesn't make any sense to me.
If the best outcome you have is that you have to fork out more funds which could be used for minis, paints paint brushes etc, and you have to wait an additional 6 months. Why the hell would you do it?
This doesn't even go into the fact that you could make one yourself, that's another argument all together.
Aesthetics are a thing chaps. As is advertising and brand and the maker seems to be ticking all the boxes for modern products.
I don't think it's any accident that it has bold colours, rounded corners to appear like mobile devices, heck they even keep putting the dammed things in most of the shots.
They're not selling a paint pallete but an upgrade to your lifestyle. These are for people that do not want moldy tupperware on their IKEA sideboard.
The idea of anti old helps but we'll we if that works or I will as I'm in for the XL.
I don't think the issue here is actually the product itself. As a wet palette it seems to perform well and looks good from an aesthetic point of view.
As notprop says you're paying more for a nicely designed product that will loook better than many of the home made versions commonly seen and more directed towards mini-painting than most other commercial wet palettes.
It probably does however perform exactly the same function as any other wet palette on the market.
And that's the issue for me.
This was marketed as something unique. The everlasting aspect was its USP and this now apparently isn't a thing anymore.
So essentially it's a nicely designed but comparatively expensive product that doesn't fulfil any unique function.
They need to change the name and the marketing as it's now misleading.
If this was being marketed as the "i-pad" of wet palettes I wouldn't mind getting one, I like nice things even if I can get them cheaper elsewhere (probably why I buy GW products, lol), but I feel a bit uncomfortable supporting a product that doesn't do what it purports to.
I noticed somewhere (can't remember where I read it) that they planned on doing a mini kickstarter later on for the everlasting bit. Will be interesting if they ever do that given they've made so much money already from this version.
I went through all the reviews that I could find and interestingly enough, all the people that like it are ones that don't actually use a wet palette or have never used one.
The ones that do use a wet palette are more on the eh side. Sure it works, but so does paper towel and parchment paper.
Have a wet palette already. Daler Rowney Sta-Wet. Its huge. Way too big, goes mouldy and its incredibly hard to get the moisture level right. Either its so wet it totally dilutes the paint, or it dries out and curls up while you're using it.#
Not sure what parchement paper actually is and never been able to/bothered to find it in UK shops
Tried making one in a takeaway pot with a sponge. Was worse than bad. Sides too high, usable area too small.
Have money and like nice things that are built for purpose.
Like supporting people's creativity.
I am disappointed by the lead time and yeah, it might be total crap... but whatevs.

Agree with you on all of this. I like things made for purpose and I have the cash. Why not give it a go - I backed.
I think they mean the bundles are Kickstarter exclusive, not the product itself. Though I could be wrong, I haven't heard whether they will sell these after the KS campaign is over or not.
I've pledged, but selected the XL size and now I'm torn! Anyone else in the same boat? When I used the P3 wet palette I always wanted much more space...

I've got the big mastersons one and its perfect. You want the biggest one that can fit in your painting area.
I still run out of room each miniature and require at least 2 if sheets.
I'd go through 100 a month of the small everlasting palette sheets and a don't paint that much.
More hydration paper sheets, more foams

Thanks, I was just coming back to reconsider my decision and you've solidified it
