Apollinaire's random projects log (Inq28, Necromunda and scratch-built terrain) @ 2017/11/12 13:28:51

Post by: Apollinaire

Hello! I've decided to take the plunge and post some of my projects (conversions, painting and scratch builds) in the hope of getting some good feedback so I can improve. In that spirit, all comments and criticism would be very welcome.
I mostly play 40k (Imperial Guard / Inquisition etc) but am interested in all sorts, including Inq28 and Bloodbowl, and a bit of scenery building too. So you'll find all of those things here sooner or later, probably in a very disorganised manner.

Without further ado, a few pics of current projects:

(1) Imperial Guard rough riders (completed test model, rest of the squad is WIP)
(2) Inquisition troops (Crusaders, Acolytes/stormtroopers plus gun servitor)
(3) Some junk-built scenery - a damaged chemical refinery with toxic lake. Not sure where I'm going with this really, it'll probably be part of something bigger eventually.

Need to work on my photography, I know... most of these are on my painting table at the moment so I'll post more when they're done.

Love that rough rider, and the putty work on the crusaders. I'll be watching this thread, thanks for posting!

Thanks for the comments, folks.

@scarper, the crusader with the helmet actually has the standard Cadian sargeant's head under the miliput. Always seem to have hundreds of those in the bits box so I figured this would be a good use for one.

These guys are starting to get some paint now, more WIP pics below. As always, C&C very welcome.

Well, the Inquisitor and her crew are progressing nicely. Next up after some final highlights, I've been building some underhive mutants to face off against them, and an acolyte / interrogator for the warband.

Can't decide if the mutants are a bit over the top, any thoughts or criticisms would be welcome!

Introducing Inquisitor Alaryx of the Ordo Xenos, with her two bodyguards and gun servitor...
Pretty happy with them, not perfect by any means but probably the best minis I've made to date. Just need some varnish and then I can get them off my overcrowded painting table!

Next up: more underhive mutants, and some Oldcromunda figs that have been in the paint stripper ready for a new lease of life.

Had a nice Bitz order arrived yesterday so I've been on a building spree.

First up is the beginnings of my Necromunda Orlock gang, made up of some conversions from the old 1995 metal minis along with a female ganger by Mark Copplestone. Yes, my Orlocks let the girls shoot. And I think when painted these guys will have enough style similarities that they'll work coherently.

Second pic is a couple of underhive bounty hunters I bashed together, and I really like these guys (in my head they're called Bill and Bob, no idea why). Bob, on the left, likes to drag his prey back alive for minimum mess, though he's not averse to cracking a skull when required. Bill (right) is a half-human, half-squat tracker who leads Bill to the target then provides some serious firepower to cover his back.

As always, c&c very much appreciated... Thanks for reading.

Happy Christmas dakka-ites, and all the best for 2018...

I've been kit-bashing some Necromunda Bounty hunters while I save up for the Underhive boxed set... On the right is The Captain, who always brings his quarry back alive (just about); and on the left, his friend The Bloodhound, half-human half-squat tracker.

Well, I finally got hold of the Necromunda box last week so have started on my Eschers. Still WIP but these 4 ladies are well on the way to being finished. I've been throwing in some dark eldar bits as I build the gang, to give them a more diverse look. Let me know what you think!

You can also follow my progress in terrain building on the current LOER thread (link should be in my signature) where I'm reimagining some of the old cardstock Necromunda scenery using a variety of materials and found objects. There's some great stuff being made over there, well worth checking out.

I came to check out what else you've been up to other than the LoER terrain comp, and I'm not disappointed. I love seeing conversion work and sculpting additions to minis. I like the work on the Inquisitor and retinue. What material do you use when sculpting new parts onto your minis? I like the look of your mutants too, and I wouldn't worry about them being over the top, they're actually tame compared to some of the weird mutants I made for a Lost and the Damned force.

You might want to post your LoER terrain pics here as well as the contest thread for posterity. Keep up the good work.

Thanks @Syro, sorry I didn't see your post a bit earlier! Really enjoyed your work in the LoER thread as well.
I generally use Milliput for sculpting. GS doesn't entirely work for me, though I realise it does for most people. Can't really put my finger on why. It's probably partly because I got into the hobby in the mid-90s till early 2000s then took a 15 year Break... Never heard of GS back then but I certainly experimented with Milliput back then (it was expensive stuff in those days!!)

I'm about to do a bit of a photo dump here now I'm catching up, I'll certainly throw in some of the LoER stuff for posterity.

Thanks . Except for certain uses I'm not too much of a fan of green stuff either. I find it too sticky the way it grabs my tools even when I wet them, and how green stuff almost seems to fight back pushing against a detail I try to sculpt and seeming to loose the sharpness of that detail. I mostly use Apoxie Sculpt personally, but more recently I almost exclusively use a mixture of greenstuff and apoxie sculpt. It's worked veyr well for me. I think both Cam and WireCat have mentioned that mixing milliput with greenstuff works well for them, you may want to try it.
I'm looking forward to your photo dump

Few more pics here of some odd minis I've been working on. I'm running my first Inq28 game at the end of the month, using a hive city setting so there's a lot of crossover between this and my Necromunda stuff, both the terrain and the minis.

Thanks @b-tone, very kind of you.

Realised I hadn't posted this guy yet, a salvage hauler for the #nestorianinfestedpopulation project (look them up on the Facebook"Inquisitorum" page if you're so inclined...)

He's designed to be a manual labourer / civilian infected by a genestealer cult, though in this case the genetic changes seem to have gone awry and left something like a biological servitor, endlessly hauling carts of scrap metals and archaeotech.

Text is a poor form of communication so I want to be clear up front that this is intended to be a respectful and helpful critique. I'm also offering solutions if you choose to pursue a change on your models.

Your ability to use random junk materials to build impressive models is excellent. Your weathering and shading technique truly brings the model to life. Unfortunately, the lettering, numbering, and hazard stripes you've hand painted are inconsistent and bringing the quality of your finished product down. Adding a cleaner element of detail will make your models even better than before.

Here are some possible solutions:

1- Numbers and letters- water transfer decals. GW transfers and O scale model train transfers would be what you are looking for here. I've been using them for years and they not only improved the look of my terrain instantly, they helped force scale perspective.

2- Hazard stripes- the hazard stripes in the pics are another quick fix- I copied a hazard stripe pattern online and used my home printer to print it to photo paper. I have a paper cutter but a hobby knife and metal ruler would be as effective.

Here's an example of some of my finished results:

Spoiler:

3- Stenciling. I haven't tried that method but I've seen others that have and the results were very good. All the examples were done with airbrushes though and I'm not sure if you have one. If yes, it's worth trying. If not, nothing to be lost by trying it by hand on a test piece of plastic.

I hope this helps.

@Skalk thanks for your considered reply, I really appreciate it. I completely agree, especially about the lettering/numbering - I'm not happy with it in several places. It's really helpful to get an outside critique to help you focus on where to improve.
I like the idea of stencils but don't have an airbrush atm (moving to a bigger house in the summer so I should have a suitable ventilated workshop, fingers crossed...) - till then I think transfers are definitely worth a look.

So, since it's International Women's Day, here's a pic of my new Inq28 warband. They'll be led by Rogue Trader Calissa Peronix (centre) along with her two daughters (currently different stages of WIP). Looking forward to building a cast of supporting characters for them with a strong Mechanicus flavour plus ship's crew.

Bit of a photo dump coming up here...

First up, WIP photos of my new Necromunda Orlock gang. I decided to go old school rather than investing in the new kit just now. They're a mixture of the old metal and plastic minis salvaged from my mum's attic (I bought some of these guys when I was 13!!!) plus 3 of the female gangers from Copplestone miniatures (all patched up and/or converted).

Next pic is my latest terrain junk-build - a chemical factory and base for my Escher gang. (More photos on the current LoER thread).

And finally a kit-bashed Daemonhost I've been messing around with, to join one of my Inquisitor's retinues.

Yeah, the new Orlocks look great but I really wanted to re+use the few survivors from my original late-90s gang...

The Daemonhost is going to be heavily chained up, I had some spare bitz lying around from the 40k tactical objectives kit so I'm going for a mobile glass-fronted coffin/prison idea.

Bit more work done on my Rogue Trader & crew, so here goes a bit of fluff to accompany the pics...

Calissa Perronix is a Rogue Trader fallen on difficult times. She comes from an aristocratic family, a powerful and influential lineage. In her younger days she travelled beyond the very edges of the Imperium, seeking wealth and knowledge amongst the stars. And soon she will again. But for now, she finds herself stranded on the hive world of Piety in the Calixis sector. When her ship dropped out of the warp on the edge of the system, the sanctioned psyker on her crew, old and wise though he was, finally lost his mind to the terrors of the immaterium. The horror he unleashed tore through the Explorator vessel and most of the crew in minutes. Calissa had seen a thousand horrors on the edge of the known galaxy, but what now appeared within her very ship was far beyond her experience. She made it to the shuttle bay with her daughters, Sabine and Lisbet, and her loyal abhuman bodyguard Kollyn. They took the shuttle to the nearest planet and left their great vessel (and her entire crew) to its unspeakable fate.

Calissa's daughters are polar opposites and dislike each other greatly. In keeping with the family's inherited ambitiousness, they are both determined to be the sole heir to their mother's fortune and lucrative Explorator's License when she retires or worse. Sabine is outgoing and flamboyant, an agile warrior who wields dual heirloom pistols and likes to see into the eyes of her enemies before dispatching them and dancing away to safety. Lisbet is quiet and sullen, especially since losing both legs beneath the knee in a xenos ambush when she was a teenager. She also carries a family heirloom, a sniper rifle of remarkable accuracy, and her mother gifted her the finest bionics she could buy. So Lisbet can usually be found moving silently but surely across rooftops, towers and walkways, dispatching threats before the rest of the crew know they are there.

And Kollyn... well. No-one is quite sure what race Kollyn is. Possibly Ogryn, possibly mutant, possibly worse. But a lifelong servant of the Perronix household, his loyalty is unquestionable, and he would step into the face of any horror to protect the members of the family.

So for now, the Perronix family are stranded, with only a short range shuttle, no crew, and limited access to their enormous wealth. They have many challenges to face before they set off for the outer edges once again, not least finding a suitable spacecraft and the companions who will join them.

Thanks mate, I appreciate it. When you get your warband underway you'll have to pop over the Pennines for a game! Inq28 is pretty addictive once you start, though

So I finally finished the Daemonhost last night... Here he is in all his imprisoned glory (except for the base) and in the last pic, accompanied by a servitor to keep the sarcophagus safe and mobile, plus my Ordo Hereticus inquisitor and priest.

I've got to admit, I'm pretty pleased with this one. Any C&C are still most welcome though.

So I did manage to finish my true scale Grey Knight for the March Painting challenge before I disappear off on holiday at stupid-o-clock tomorrow morning - though I'm not quite satisfied with the details yet so might revisit him. The pic shows him next to my Ordo Hereticus inquisitor for scale.

Also been building more Necromunda terrain - a base and chem factory for my Escher gang (which I'm calling Stimm City), and some very early attempts at zone mortalis wall sections.

As always, c&c much appreciated. I'm signing off for 2 weeks while I visit the in-laws in Canada, no hobbying will be done but I might well drop by the forums and catch up properly with other people's threads!

Hello Dakka-ites!
Back from holiday, though hobby time & equipment is a bit limited till next week. I've been kitbashing though, and started off this tech-priest of the Magos Oceania (check out the Mare Solum group on FB for more background/fluff relating to this build - https://www.facebook.com/groups/481877232185342/ ).
As always, c&c very welcome indeed. This is a very early stage WIP though

Couple more WIP shots of the nautical Magos below... H/T to Nikki and Richard on the Mare Solum page for the background fluff:

"The Magos Oceania are a smaller sect of the Magos Biologis, specialising in the study and cataloguing of marine lifeforms on all planets. They have a large presence on Mare Solum due to its wide array of aquatic fauna and flora. They utilise bionics and technology that is waterproofed and highly corrosion resistant. Teams of Magi often submerge for days and sometimes weeks at a time for research fieldwork using locally made servitors based on aquatic wildlife to assist their studies. Often they graft vat grown appendages to their bodies to make themselves more suited for under water travel and survival."

Cheers Syro. The dragon heads started life as a sea monster piece from Dreadfleet which I chopped up. Spotted it in an eBay bitz store which gave me the idea.

@Ynnead I'm only aware of Mare Solum on Facebook. Its a really nice little community, lots of Inq28 people involved but a really broad range. Its intended as a community-developed setting in the 40K universe so not tied to any particular rule set.

Thanks also for the kind words @youwashock.

Been a bit of a slow couple of weeks but hoping for more hobby time and updates in the near future. Thanks to those of you who've stopped in here, all the best.

I think I've made enough progress with my Magos Oceanum to post a quick update.
The Magos is just about done along with his Praetorian Servitor bodyguard and his flying abomination (still working out what to call this one...).
Final pic is a couple of WIP Skitarii who will serve as the Magos' meatshields, ahem, I mean loyal servants of the Omnissiah.

I'm digging the color scheme on the magos oceanum. I agree with monkeytroll about the one being reminiscent of a jelly fish. Maybe try out some of the scientific names for jellyfish with slight changes? Jelly fish are part of phylum Cnidaria (the c is silent so pronounced ni-dare-ee-ah) if that helps.

Ooh, thanks for that guys. It could be a Cnidaritor. Or a Cnidarian Dragoon!

It's been a tough few weeks IRL especially with a big house move going on, but I'm still managing a little hobby time.

I've just about finished up three Armsmen for my Inq28 Rogue Trader's crew. Bit of finishing up to do, especially on the power maul. Second pic is the whole crew so far, Rogue Trader Calissa Peronnix , her two daughters and her surviving crew. In the current narrative campaign we're running, these guys are trapped on the Hiveworld of Piety after their ship was infested by daemons on exiting the warp.

Thanks for the kind words. Life has been hectic with the house move, new place is a bit of a renovation project so I've been painting more walls than minis

Anyway, I got a boost this week from splitting a Kill Team box with a friend... Big old pile of plastic has resulted in a new Inq28 warband (currently thinking freebooters/ pirates/ mercs), plus in the final pic, the last 2 members of my Magos Oceanum warband which will be heading to WHW in October for the Mare Solum event.

Cultists look good. With the marines I'm not convinced the original beakie head works - they can look a bit off on modern marines, with a true-scale I think it'll be a bit more obvious. On a similar note, the power fist might benefit from adding a newer pad, but less noticeable than the head.
Obviously this is with it all blu-tac'd in place, so may not be an issue at all

Thanks Monkeytroll. I know what you mean about the old bitz... Just being a bit sentimental I guess, it's 25 years since I built my first space marines and I can't imagine building a Kill Team *without* a beaky head in there somewhere!! Hopefully I can make it work when the blu-tack is replaced with Greenstuff

@Cam thanks mate.

Quick update since I've just about finished my Renegade Astartes/ cultists Kill Team.

The Dragon Lord and his battle-brothers were cut off from the rest of their (unknown) chapter, presumed dead, on the border planet of Bellerophon's Fall.

The Astartes soon realised that the locals worshipped them as gods, and so began their descent into heresy. The squad seargeant restyled himself as the Dragon Lord, channeling an ancient myth on the planet.

After overthrowing the planetary government, the Dragon Lord and his followers set off on a plundering spree throughout the sector. And so they continue, a small band of the lost and the damned, wreaking havoc on the edges of the Imperium.

C&C very welcome
