I have supported 3 of their kickstarters so far, it has always been worth it!

Anyone taken a look- see through the rules yet?

What are the minis and the terrain made out of? I don't see any mention of any materials anywhere on the campaign page. Is it MDF or folded paper? Are the minis plastic, metal or resin?

The design shares a lot of direction with Sedition Wars and Mantic's Warpath, so I am interested.

The terrain is printed cardboard (they have created 4 terrain only campaigns previously and it has been very well reviewed) and the models are "plastic", will have to see if that actually is plastic or restic.

From the FAQ -

The terrain is pre-punched, 1.5mm thick card, printed in a high quality finish on both sides.

Card terrain and "plastic" minis. Not sure what type of plastic but they look like Zombicide/Conan/Dark Souls type to me.

16 pounds plus another 15 for shipping is really steep for 4 miniatures. The add on pledge is also higher than I want to spend. I guess I will either wait for retail or piggyback on someone else's pledge and split some shipping.

The robots and galactic troopers really appeal to me.

Judging from the previous Kickstarters, the boxes for the terrain get pretty heavy. Don't forget there's also a mousepad mat in there as well.

I'm in! Snagged an early bird for once.

Always wanted to get in on their old campaigns but missed them because reasons. Looks great to me though. I'm expecting the minis to be like Zombicide-ish, they kinda look like it. Looks like the bases have some kinda printed thingy on top, that's a nice touch for non painters... but would be a pain if you wanted to spray-prime them. I don't think I wanna paint directly onto the mini.

I am not familiar with them. I've seen the Steve Jackson cardboard castle, though. How does BS's card compare to Plasticraft's plasticard terrain in terms of durability and three-dimensionality of detail?

Also, wouldn't it take forever to fold cardboard terrain of the size depicted in the base pledge? I'm no Kubo when it comes to folding.

Do you recommend painting the edges black? If so, would a Sharpie work or cause some damage?

Battle Systems - Core Space Skirmish game *Kickstarter live* @ 2017/11/20 16:56:00

Post by: Aeneades

I have heard a lot of people use sharpies on the edges and not just black, they use a variety of colours to match the sides of the item they are colouring (more applicable with the post apocalyptic set which had multiple colour chairs and sofas).

Battle Systems - Core Space Skirmish game *Kickstarter live* @ 2017/11/20 16:57:19

On their official site there are guides and tutorials and coloured markers / sharpies are recommended to enhance the corners and make it more immersive.

Black or different colors depending on what they are. It is preferred than a white card strip. Once assembled, you won't even be able to see them.

No matter if you choose to color or not color. You will want to get brush on superglue to brush the edges of the terrain. It will create a plastic, hard coat, that prevents them from fraying from constant use. I do that with my board games tiles, pieces and tokens as well.

Battle Systems - Core Space Skirmish game *Kickstarter live* @ 2017/11/20 19:45:03

Battle Systems - Core Space Skirmish game *Kickstarter live* @ 2017/11/20 20:35:08

Post by: wilycoyote

Not sure that will work, the idea behind brushing on the superglue is that it gets to the card layers and create a very hard edge - almost like hard plastic.
It really does help preserve the edges byut also to "repair" pieces were you have tried to force the connections rather than clipping carefully any that are too toght

Does it all actually store back in the box? Maybe I should give it a go since I'm on vacation...

Yeah that happens with most honestly. It takes a good dedicated couple days to get everything cut out, coated, assembled and ready. However once done you don't have to spend that time doing that anymore, just set up and play. It doesn't store in the box but they store nicely in a couple 15 QT containers from Walmart or Home Depot. There is a video of them showing how to pack them into one properly (while assembled) I think from the first Kickstarter.

My outpost set does mostly fit in the box. The problem lies in the geo dome shelter and the watch tower that come in the set. Those won't fit, but the rest is fine.

I actually just finished unpunching my urban apocalypse set last night. No way will that fit back in, but I could probably get most of it back in. Instead, I have it stored on a tiered containers that fits just about everything except the floor tiles.

There's been a couple of new additions to this game.

The game is now tantalisingly close to funding, and they have lots more to come.

New additions are :-

Firstly a mission pack - it contains a plasma reactor and auto-doc, 2 cell walls, and some infestation (all available in their previous sci-fi 2 kickstarter, but the reactor and cell walls are a re-skin) plus a mission log to add to the game.

and then they've chucked 4 Purge into the free KS Bonus pot.

The new reskinned cell wall matches the base Games terrain set nicely where as the old one had a different style and colour of wall so would have stood out.

Hilarious. I had asked them if the infestation stuff would be available via the KS and they said "no, get it on the web store".

Things change when you still haven't funded a week later I guess...

The number of infestation parts in this pack even smaller than even the smallest dedicated infestation pack I think so if you want an infested table you are better off getting one of those other packs anyways.

Correct. The mission pack contains something like a third of the smallest infestation pack. It's enough to do a room (and self evidently to populate the mission itself) but it's not the best way to buy that product if you wanted to cover larger areas of the board.

Battle Systems have previewed some upcoming characters as well.

None of them are intentional homages (so far at least), though some, perhaps most are heavily influenced by the creator's lifelong love of sci-fi. Apparently he designed MAC (or not-Baymax as you might call him - I'm seeing hints of K-2SO as well) years (decades) ago while still at school.

I wish I could get excited by this since I've loved their terrain, but I find almost all the hero sculpts aside from that three-armed alien guy completely underwhelming. And the robots are equally uninspired. This whole things just feels overwhelmingly generic, even for what is supposed to be a generic setting, lol. The posing on the figures is very unnatural. I mean, what is Roykirk doing? Or Renton?

And why are the Galactic Guards armed with super soakers?

Well... this is super tempting to me. I’ve seen their previous Kickstarters and have always thought “no! I’ll assemble and paint my own terrain!”... so, yeah.. that never happened...

Everything about is apealing To me now, we’ll, other ham a couple wonky poses of the some of the figures. He terrain is what is calling to me. Lightweight, looks pretty good actually and, even if it does take a a day or two to put together it’s WAAAAY quicker than what I’ve been doing (3 months and I have assembled and primed about 4 pieces of terrain). This might go up on a Christmas list

The terrain looks very nice, very useable for customizing Space Hulk or DW: Overkill (and Necromunda obviously), and I get from this topic that the quality is pretty good.

However, the value of the whole campaign is pretty low right now, and the add-ons are pretty expensive: no discount at all for a second set or the terrain sets they already sell through their website, and as mentioned earlier the Infestation mission pack for 8GBP has a third of the contents of the infestation pack from the website, which is 12GBP. And 4 man-sized figs for 16GBP would be considered unreasonably high even if GW was selling it .

It is also unclear whether any extra figures come with their required cards, counters, dashboards and any of that stuff that you need to actually use them.

I will keep an eye on it to see whether the stretch goals make it anymore interesting, but if not it's probably cheaper to get this from retail later.

The infestation pack had a third of the infection terrain compared to the infestation pack but does have over items such as the plasma reactor, cell wall and autodoc so pretty comparable.

you're not comparing like for like though. that £12 infestation pack on their website does indeed contain 3 times as much infestation, but the add-on for Core Space also comes with cell walls, a plasma reactor and an auto-doc (along with an add-on exclusive mission for the game which specifically utilises those parts. Knowing a little of how their pricing model works (effectively you're paying for sheets of A4 card that have been printed and die cut), I'd say it's pretty even.

I'm not sure you're being fair on mini pricing either. Take a look at Hasslefree, Crooked Dice or Studio Miniatures for example - most of their figures are £3-£4 each plus VAT, and a box of 5 NPC characters in CMoN's recent Black Plague set you back $22 (£16.50). Sure they're not cheap minis, but the prices are in keeping with other products.

And it most definitely won't be cheaper at retail, not when you factor in the stretch goals you'll be getting with the kickstarter.

On the terrain front, how does it compare to Malifaux Terraclips? I loved the Terraclips from posts online, but in person, I thought it looked cheap and tacky.

Semi-related, does anyone have pictures of it in use outside of the studio photos? What a regular joe-scho can do with it?

I've never used Terraclips so can't compare, but I've never had any problems with BS nd personally I think their terrain looks great. It really helps with immersion into the game.

a good place to look for photos would be the Battle Systems Terrain Fan Group on Facebook. You'll find hundreds of photos covering most of the BS range there.

BS makes for more interesting and useful geometry (Terraclips tended to make big, empty, square or rectangular rooms) but Terraclips was sturdier. Both offerings look great from 3 feet away but tend to look shonky up close (Terraclips because the clips were quite obvious, BS because of the way layers sit on top of each other). However, BS sets always have a ton of extra scatter terrain on the sheets so represent good value for money in my opinion. The biggest problem that both sets face is the long setup time. Not an issue for small, exterior buildings which can be stored in one piece like their outpost sets but more of a problem with interior rooms and corridors.

I've never really had much of an issue with the length of time needed to setup. It does of course depend greatly on what you're setting up. A 6' x 4' layout built to 2 or 3 levels high across most of it might take an hour or so, particularly if you haven't pre-built parts of the structure, but a more commonly used 2' x 2' skirmish board can be thrown up in 5-10 minutes tops, and certainly with the later sets - Urban Apocalypse / City / Shanty, and the new Sci-fi II, it can be very quick indeed. The earlier two sets - sci-fi 1 and fantasy had a "ramp" system which looks great but complicates setup quite a bit.

The nice thing is though, that even with the changes in design over time, there's still a level of compatibility across the sets, so it doesn;t take a great deal of work to lay out a big table with sectors of different terrain - combining sci-fi 2 and shanty for example, or even sci-fi 1 and fantasy to give the impression of a futuristic building having been constructed on top of some ancient (and no doubt alien infested) ruin.

As for looking "shonky" close up, we'd have to agree to disagree on that one. Sure they aren't fully 3D, it's all done with graphics, but personally I find the quality of those graphics to be fantastic - far greater than I could paint, that's for sure. I agree there are more realistic looking options out there, in resin or perhaps in mdf with lots of bits to glue on, but those are very very expensive to cover similar areas, require a huge investment in time and money to paint, and then take up enormous amounts of storage space. It's horses for courses. If you have the time, skills, money, and space, then go for those options. If not, then I heartily recommend taking a look at the offerings from Battle Systems.

Yeah you are spot on with the ramps contributing significantly
to build conplexity and time so I am glad they aren't present in this KS (I'm starting to think dropping them was a conscious choice). As for the layers, I didn't mean in a Photoshop sense but in a build sense. Once you start adding levels, especially with balconies, you notice that nothing sits flat on the layer below and because of the clips, each piece is at an angle of + / - 5 degrees from the next.

It's nothing gamebreaking but when comparing with terraclips it is a difference to note.

We played the Walking Dead on Thanksgiving using Barzam's urban terrain, and I have to say i was SERIOUSLY impressed.

With just his basic pledge we were able to fill two mats up with a nice amount of single story terrain and didn't even come close to using all of it.

The variety of bits and pieces made the game play significantly better, to the degree that it got me off my duff to start building up my own pledge from the last campaign.

While Necromunda is certainly on my mind right now as well, having played with this stuff firsthand has got me a lot more excited about this game now.

You can go in at £1 minimum to access the pledge manager but you will need to buy one of the core pledges to be able to buy any of the add-ons.

Hmmmm. Need to think about that. I've always been a fickle add ons only kind of guy.

Keep in mind one of the "Core Pledges" is literally Terrain or Add-ons only Pledge, so you can upgrade to that, just don't get free stretch goals (which honestly is what gives the main Core pledge so much value).
Pledge £45 or more ABOUT $60
Terrain or Add-ons only Pledge

Choose the Cyberpunk Terrain or any combination of add-ons starting from £45.

// No Free Stretch Goals with this pledge //

Shipping charged after the campaign ends, see Shipping section for full details.

No probs on that Bob, it's just the way they run their KS's they have to have a certain amount of core sales to allow the production of an support of the add-ons /cover some of the shipping costs as they sub part of them, them selves. As you can see from the ks everything so far unlocked is directly added into the main pledge and that's set to keep growing the more that things unlock.

An option that some folk choose to do is to find some one or a group to buy a pledge with, add in everything they need to reduce shipping costs and then sell /trade off the rest.

Battle Systems have released another mission add-on, and it's a thing of beauty. Great value too.

For the princely sum of just £8, you can get Zed's Bar, a set of extra terrain (core set needed of course) to run the included mission "Shootout at Zed's"

Here's what you get :-

and here's how you'd use it in game :-

The colour of the strut going into and matching the bar is a gorgeous touch. That's a great add on.

Off to add pennies...

I'm liking the bar too.

Had to add for it.

Hoping we get some terrain stretches eventually, but I do like we've got a bit of variety in terms of figures so far.

a productive weekend has brought up another 2 stretchgoals, and we're well on the way to a third, so both Marlowe and Faye are now unlocked and next up will be MAC.

Then we'll be chasing the huge Juggernaught - for when the Galactic Corps absolutely want a hammer to crack a nut. This is one tough guy.

In the meantime, Battle Systems released an interesting insight into the design and story behind some of their characters, including some examples of early sketches from designer and owner of Battle Systems, Colin Young.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1621774283/core-space/posts/2055274

Hopefully this is exactly the sort of thing we'll see in the rulebook to add background and story to the game, resulting in a much more interesting gaming experience.

Update #13

Nov 27 2017

TITAN!!!
THE TITAN ACCORD

The Galactic Corps are trying to route the Purge from the Space Station Titan but they need your help! The traders have agreed to a temporary truce with each other to help the Corps to fight a common enemy.

The Purge are interested in a strange alien infestation and are in no mood to leave!

Hi, guys, today we're going to tell you about our new Titan Pledge. It's basically a big pledge that comes with it's own mission and a whopping discount. But don't mind me, here's Colin to tell you all about it:

.

In short the Titan Pledge consists of:

1 x Boxed game
1 x Cyberpunk Terrain
1 x Add-on K - OUTBREAK!
1 x Add-on L - Shootout at Zed's!
1 x The Titan Accord Mission
All FREE stretch goals
Separately the components on the Kickstarter would cost £145 (with an RRP of £197) but the Titan Pledge has a crazy discount and is priced at £120. No early bird needed here either... it's already a silly deal If you were to buy the components separately in retail you would spend an extra £77!

The Titan Pledge will be available very shortly after this update is posted. This saving is a Kickstarter only offer and won't be available in our web shop or retail later!

Cheers

well we blew through two more stretch goals overnight, meaning that both the Juggernaught and another trader, Hoskins, have been added to the orange banner of lovely free stuff we get as a stretch goal bonus with every core set pledged for.

That brings the total number of minis you'd get if you were to pledge for a core set to 34, 26 of which are different sculpts.

Next up are two stretch goals offering more cardstock terrain in the guise of extra walls.

there's a good video with Colin from Battle Systems talking about the new Titan pledge and how the mission designed for it will work. it gives a great insight into the thinking behind the project, and is well worth a watch by anyone new to Battle Systems or considering jumping in on the Core Space KS.

Both the terrain stretchgoals got knocked down overnight. That's an additional 6 more walls - 2 feet of goodness, added to the free extra stuff that will come with every core set purchased in the KS.

Next up, we've got Thomen, another trader and a crew member alongside the already unlocked Hoskins. We're already close to unlocking him.

Well we got Thomen, and then we got a bunch more terrain, and now we're working towards unlocking Pi.

Well we unlocked Pi, and then we unlocked the stretchgoal after that which gave us some crates and furniture, so the big orange banner of awesomeness (ie all the extra stuff that comes free to KS backers) now looks like this.

Here's the 3D Render of Pi

Then we also added a bunch of consoles

Next up will be Captain Teelac

and some extra signage to make the terrain layouts look oh so cool

The value in this KS just keeps on rising - there will be more to come as BS have confirmed at least 2 more traders.

and there's a new purchasable add-on with a couple of civilians and a security detail.

Hmmm...

Depends on who is making this "High Quality PVC Plastic" - I believe that is actually possible, from some manufacturers!

They mentioned who made it, a long time ago, and I've totally forgotten now.

I know it assuaged my worries at the time, and they were pretty specific.

...that's not really helpful or specific though, is it?

I like the new add on, but it doesn't feel like 16 pounds worth of an add on. Maybe with some extra cardboard bits thrown in.

Looking through the stretch goals, I'm surprised we haven't seen any new event cards show up. Those are easy to make/ cheap to produce, and there's only 15 in the box so far.

Don't get me wrong though- I'd much prefer new minis or terrain...

if they have mentioned it, then I can't find where.

I'm in a position to know which company they are using (or at least which company they were planning to use a few months ago, and I don't believe they'll have changed), but sadly not at liberty to divulge the info (I have asked, waiting for a response).

I can say though that when looking at that company's other minis, I've personally held some and found them to be top notch, and I've searched and can't find a bad review of them either. I'd say (imho) that they are way better than Mantic or CMoN for example.

and knowing Colin and Wayne of Battle Systems as I do, I can definitely say they'd both be mortified if they put out a substandard product. They are as much in the business for their love of gaming as they are to feed the kids and as such, they want to put out a quality product as much as we want to receive one.

this is what Colin said about the minis manufacturer.

Its a well known factory thats made game miniatures for many of the very top games... we are 95% sure we are using them. We have lots of samples both from the factory, and other companies that use them. The quality is awesome and they know exactly what is needed for miniatures. They have handled and still are handling miniature projects for some of the very best game out there and currently in development from big companies both on and off of KS. Their communication is also excellent too. Our other factory we use for the Terrain is still being used of course and they will be working together to pack the perfect boxed game D

STretchgoal 19 has been unlocked, and Battle Systems have announced Stretchgoal 21 as another named character, Captain Sondar.

on top of that they've announced another minis pack as an add-on - gangers and guards.

and also a further stretchgoal that's linked to social media sharing rather than raw fund raising. We're already 2/3 of the way to unlocking it.

So both stretchgoals 20 and SM1 (Evangaline) are now unlocked. It's going to be rude not to paint Evangeline in a yellow suit with black trim. I might have to get 2 !

We're fast approaching unlocking Captain Sondar

and then after that we have another crew member, Hunter, to unlock.

I really like the look of the figures and love their terrain, but, I just can't get into the gameplay on the BoW vid. Watched a few minutes a couple of days ago, but ended up losing interest and watched This Morning instead... The BoW fella looked totally uninspired by the game and the pacing lacked something :( Any ideas if there are similar games out there that can be used as a comparison?

Battle Systems - Core Space Skirmish game *Kickstarter live* @ 2017/12/09 08:26:59

Post by: biggusdoggus

I wouldn't entirely disagree with you that the first BoW video was a little dull to watch. I think both players suffered from analysis paralysis, and the level of umming and ahhing was off the scale. Now in fairness, Colin from Battle Systems was trying to explain his though processes and the game as he went along, and while I don't know how Justin usually plays games, he was self evidently new to this one. It's also a game with a twist - the concept that diving in and not trying to take out your opponent but rather potentially work together, barter etc, is a relatively unusual one for games of this type, so I think it just took a while for things to settle down.

I can tell you though, as one of the guys who attended the Battle Systems games day and played the game along with 8 others, all on the same table at the same time, that that wasn't our experience. We definitely played it quicker even with a lot of chat and discussion and debate as to how things worked, and I feel that after an initial play through, we'd have got considerably quicker still.

The game has a strong narrative element which does lend itself to discussion and debate during play, which in turn will slow things down. I'd say it works well for an evening of entertainment, and over the course of a multi mission campaign, will rally bring tjhe story to life, but there may be an argument for self imposing some sort of timer during game play - I've found with other games, that even having a clock on the table, without setting any hard time limits, that can hurry things along as people become aware of the time.

So in short, I don't think the BoW video was entirely representative in terms of pacing. Moves were massively over analysed and decisions that should have taken 10 seconds to resolve, took minutes. In that respect I agree with you, but I don't think it was entirely the fault of the game.

There is a second BoW Let's Play video that I've not watched, but based on its length, I'd suggest might be a better experience. I did hear that there might be a third being released as well, but I can't find it yet.

Thanks for the answer. I'm hoping that they have this running as a demo game at Salute next year - would be interested to have a go and see it in the flesh. Watching games is normally not as much fun as laying them after all. After my AvP experience i'm very wary of KS (and I know that Battle Systems have been very good with their previous KSs, but once bitten...)

Battle Systems - Core Space Skirmish game *Kickstarter live* @ 2017/12/09 17:21:08

Post by: biggusdoggus

Yeah, I rode the AvP train as well, and only just got my final bits and bobs just a couple of weeks ago (after many many emails)

Ironically I backed Battle Systems' first KS, their original variant of sci-fi, specifically so I had some cool terrain to play AvP on. They've delivered 4 kickstarters pretty much on time over the 4 years since, while I still no many who are waiting for Prodos/Archon to pull their fingers out.

Battle Systems are properly organised when it comes to delivering their terrain now. I'd accept that if anything might make them come unstuck, it's adding minis and other non cardstock parts to the mix, but I have faith that they'll successfully overcome whatever issues they encounter and do us proud once again. I know if they do run into problems and end up late they won't run to ground and go silent on us - that's not their style (and I know where they live !)

and yes I'm sure they'll be showing off Core Space at Salute and UK Expo, albeit it will still be their pr-production version I would think for most components.

Stretchgoal 22 is now unlocked, giving Hunter to all backers.

Here's how the orange banner of goodies looks like now :-

Then we have Chit - another trader, and a crew member for Captain Sondar - he's just been unlocked as I type

the next stretchgoal will be for yet another trader - Satiene

When unlocked she'll also be free to all backers, bringing the total number of minis per core set to 42, a staggering 35 of which are unique.

and finally there's a new add-on - a whole ship's crew plus 2 already released civvies packs, plus an additional mission and 5 more event cards in one mega deal.
