Hello! So i decided to start one of these for my fantasy related projects, because trying to put things up on these actually makes me get things done! I've got a bunch of random and unrelated fantasy figures from various things, but i'm going to start with the figures from Shadow over Hammerhal, for a variety of reasons. My sisters and I used to play hero quest a lot as kids, and we're hoping to use this as a way to recreate some memories and to help pass it on to the next generation, ie my nephews. Family game fun is the best fun. The painting is up to me.
Now, i'm not a good painter. I know this, but i'm improving by little bits. and i hope that will show.
Anyhow, what i'm working on right now is this gryph hound!
Gryph hounds are my favorite thing by far to come out of AoS. If i ever get another one of the little tiny ones from silver tower i'm going to put it on the base next to this guy as his tiny friend.
Pictures always show mistakes i miss, and i can already see quite a few things to fix on this one, but there it is.
Next: The Muscle Men of Chaos

I finished my box of Gryphounds a couple weeks ago and I loved them. Hope you do too. I quite like the green body and deep red for the beak and nails. Looking forward to more.

Looks good! Looking forward to more. The space marine player in me would like to see some stormcasts come out of this blog. Something we can expect in the future?

Thanks! i love the gryph hounds, yeah. they have a great design and they're just fun to paint.
brushcommando wrote:Looks good! Looking forward to more. The space marine player in me would like to see some stormcasts come out of this blog. Something we can expect in the future?
Oh, they will definitely be some stormcast coming! i've got a few close to done actually, and of course there's the lord castellant from the warhammer quest game!
Meanwhile, a chaos friend:
I'm kind of pleases with how his skin turned out. I feel like i'm making some good progress in that area, though of course i still have a ways to go. his loincloth deal needs another wash i think. Also, clearly the real reason people go over to chaos is for the gift of ABS. all these guys have no shirts, amazing abs. Order people are fully clothed, to hide their shameful lack of sixpacks.
Next: A hero?

Yes, a hero! the greatest of them all!
Yes, the tiny gryph hound from silver tower! i actually am going to repaint him, but i'm happy with his eyes.

I made it my goal to use no green at all.
Next: I dunno, more plastic little men.

Progress? progress. Also nurgle.
Also also i need a better camera... lighting... everything...

Thank you! i'm really happy with how the color turned out, it surprised me a little.
Here is my current work in progress, the stormcast lantern fellow!
i messed up the hourglass so bad, but i have plans to fix it.

Post by: amazingturtles
So... a sorceror!
I somehow have three chaos sorcerers, and i hate the idea of them all looking the same, plus the default head is as goofy as can be. So i did some basic kitbashing for this one
Nothing fancy, a new head and some snake arms. i'm pretty happy with him like this.

Still working away on hammerhal things, just putting this guy up
I am going to improve my picture taking situation next, that is one thing i can improve.

Progress! Again!
Next is going to be something different from hammerhal because i need a change
107727

Something different!
Though still a guy who can be used for hammerhal. i wonder how that works, story wise.

I like these guys

Next: Another surprise!

The surprise isn't surprising but it was surprising to me, anyhow i ended up splitting the soul box with a friend.
Also i have a new gryph hound. I am going to paint all of these, that is my goal. That is what i will be doing. I will not be stopped.

Thanks! belated thanks. Though the one head actually came with the kit! they are getting better at proving more options, i have to admit.
Sadly i have not had much time for hobby stuff, though for mainly good reasons: I am in a play! Which is fun.
But here is something I intend to work on when i am done: A few grot scuttlings.
Just a few.
107727
Post by: amazingturtles
So here is something unrelated, but a little neat: I found the pieces from the lord of the rings trivial pursuit game, and they are actually pretty nice?
Like, not amazing, but solid quality. And just solid. The rest of the game is long gone, but I kind of like these guys! they're attached to the plastic part, but it shouldn't take much to remove that. Might be nice for frostgrave or something similar.

In the meantime, who wants a gryph hound? Answer, everyone
Here they are pictured with their king, the silver tower gryph hound, the best one.
Ok to be honest i am in the process of repainting most of them. Too many blue, needs more rainbow.
And more gryph hounds

I've been struggling with that, actually! i've been trying several different color schemes and none of them seem quite right. i do like the little guys, but i like smaller figures in general. Hopefully I will be ready to put up a few samples next time.
But for now have a ghost with a pokin' spear. i believe that is the official name.
And if not it still is to me

That dwarven group shot looks really good. Guy on the right looks a bit like a doorknocker - excuse me sir, I need to axe you a few questions about our lord and saviour Moradin...
The LOTR figures are pretty incredible. At first thought I they were the old metal Citadel ones from when the movies first came out.
Congrats on your play! I do a bit of theatre as well, and it always seems to turn into a massive black hole for all of my free time - so I'm impressed that you're managing to get anything done at all!
Look forward to see where you take the Dwarfcelsior priest - sometimes we need a challenge to make us rise to that next level

That is very kind of you, thanks! sadly, that guy, who was a lot of fun to make... has gone missing. I've moved since making that one, and i worry that he was a casualty.
Well, here's something different. A ways back i had an idea of making some stormcast inspired orcs. The idea being that orcs saw the stormcast going around the realms generally prodding buttock, and they said, "hey that's pretty good, we should steal their stuff!" only they would have said it more orky. of course you might ask "how can they even steal stormcast equipment?" but the orcs don't ask that, they just do it.
I've worked on a few orcs (orruks? greenskins?) on and off, here's one that is still a work in progress.
Orc-cast eternals?

Here is a guy i have been working on and off on... and off. I don't think i put any in progress pictures here before? Anyhow it is a khorgorath but i gave him a new head, as is my wont.
I wasn't sure when i made it but the switch has grown on me.

That’s a great conversion turtles. I had to google the original model - and I like your version much better!
It's a little hard to see the paintjob on the excelsior, but what I can make out still looks pretty good. Sometimes if I am considering stripping a model, I'll give the whole thing a good wash of Agrax Earthshade just before I do. That can either help to bring the whole thing together, or make it easier to see what works and what might need to change. Might work for your tall dwarf!

Wow, that Ogre head fits the Khorgorath really well, and is also a headswap that I haven't seen before! I'd probably try to remove those bone worms and greenstuff the holes though.

Post by: kestral
Wow, that is a thing! The relatively non threatening head with the body makes for an evocative conversion. Ink Wash (or maybe more ink wash- not sure from the picture) should really make it easy to get a good look on most of the model.

Yeah, i wasn't even sure what those things were when i painted them. They do look better removed, like on yours.

I haven't used any ink wash yet, but i will now. I have a tendency to be nervous about the stuff.

Yeah! I'm really liking them so far, and that turtle... sadly that turlte is beyond my reach for now but some day, some day...
i am testing out some paint scheme ideas right now, but it's not quite working out... what i want is to use shades of purple for the clothing, make a rose gold for the armour, turqoise skin, and white for some details. here's the test:
Not purple enough.
In other news! it seems to be the time of year for new years goals, so i'm making a couple right here
1: Finish up that dang dwarfcelsior.
2: Otherwise concentrate on one project through to completion, in this case: Fish elves!
Those are my goals.

Probably neeeds a bit more, the skin is still looking flat to me.

I can try it, for sure!
Drybrushing is fun, but I seem to mess it up when working on faces, making them too mottled.

Very nice stuff - I too like the Gryphs probably the most out of AOS - but those fish elves are a close second. I like the classic Aquaman vibe you've got going. I was terrible with ink in the old days myself, but the new washes are actually really hard to go wrong with. They changed my life. I do have to hold back sometimes because they look so good going on that I want to keep putting on more and more...
I hate to point this out, but I don't see the giant deepkin turtle....? It is amazing and all. : )

Hm, what i would really like is an otter about the size of the one that comes with mantic naiads, but in a swimming rather than standing pose. But more otters of any kind are good. Thank you for the comment also. Thanks all around.

amazingturtles,
Whenever I get that feeling I will sit down and pull out a model that has sat for a long time in the unpainted or hardly painted and I pick a colour and paint that on the model, each time I finish that colour I tell myself "one more colour" and carry on with the next. Before I know it I have got my basecoat done and that gives a sense of accomplishment and often spurs some highlights and before you know it you have that model painted. And finishing a painted model always helps with that sense of accomplishment and might help push back the cloud.
Hope that helps.

Thank you, and yes, they are just one color. Working on washes and drybrushing i think should be my next goal, both on that one and in general. Drybrushing really is amazing, especially on texturey things like trees.

Yeah, i've been doing small bits here and there, progress does help. Unfortunately i have clinical depression, so there's a limit to how much it can, but painting is something i use to help get through it. I've been doing that since i was about twelve, to be honest. Im going to be a +1 for the washes and highlighting. Great painting so far but it feels like it would be enhanced by that final finish and it's usually the most rewarding step for how little effort it takes!

I'm there EDIT: Cheers for the tiny KOW reports, glad to see you getting stuck in. Because I was bored at work and like making lists, I tried to brew up two 1000 point lists from what I see of your rat collection and the humans in that game: Warriors Regiment Warriors Regiment Warriors Horde Warriors Horde Weapon Team - Storm of Lead Weapon Team - Storm of Lead Artillery War Chief - Pipes of Terror Night Terror - Inspiring Talisman 1000 Terror is played by the rat ogre from that lot. They're good, fast characters, however the list needed more inspiring so I suppose he'll lurk with the line and either zip out or remain a (potent) flanking force. Went with brutal on the chief so he can reliably add 2+ to most combats he tagteams. Seemed like the most relevant of the 15 pointers, which is all I had after juicing up the weapon teams. Berserkers Regiment Berserkers Regiment Berserkers Regiment Bowmen Troop Bowmen Troop Siege Artillery General on Horse - Banner of the Griffin General on Winged Beast - Orcish Skullpole 1000 Double generals is interesting, and the one who is likely a mere army standard in most games got a banner to bash ratty skulls in with Also to offset the somewhat lower nerve, as the 'serkers aren't hordes. That siege artillery is me squinting at the KOM photo and trying to make out what the thing in the back that doesn't move forward is.
107727
Post by: amazingturtles
A very belated thanks for the list! It's impressive, and one thing i'm realizing is just how far behind i am on the rules, i don't think i recognize a lot of those artifacts. The thing in the back is actually a dwarf cannon but i could easily use it as siege artillery.
Sadly i haven't been able to get a game in since that last one. It's a busy time, and i'm going to be doing another play soon, so it's only going to get busier. Ah well
In the meantime, the best figure that GW has ever released, plus doors!

Thank you, i'm glad to hear it!
Here is a little thing that is silly, I got to play a game with my nephew where ogres were trying to save turtles from ghosts. The rules were based off AoS but played pretty loosely. The ghosts tried to steal the turtles away and off the field, while the ogres tried to save them. But they had to roll a dice for each rescue, on a 2-5 the turtle was saved, on a 1 the ogre accidentally ate the turtle, and on a six the turtle turned out to be a TURTLE OF POWER and both the turtle and ogre ascended to a higher plane.
It was good times.
Also i put this picture up because i painted this ogre quite a while ago and it is nice to see that yes, i have improved some.

Thanks! I wish i had the opportunity for more games like that.
Things have been kind of rough for me lately unfortunately, especially in terms of money. But i got good news today, in that i got a job i have been hoping for! It's a good job with actual regular hours and decent pay. basically living the dream.
Here is an old lizard i found. I don't think i posted this guy here before, i just wanted to share something.

Thank you both! it's been a bit again but i sadly don't have anything painting related to report, it's just been crazy busy.
I do have a question though! I found these little guys recently
I know that they're from a board game, but which one i have no idea. Anyone out there have any ideas?

I return having found something kind of neat at a sale!
Fortunately i do know what game these guys came from. Still wondering about the others

I would have guessed someone turned the simple video game Dwarves and Dragon into a board game version...other than that no idea.

No idea on the red pair I’m afraid. Their bases have a chess or board game look about them. How big are they?
Any plans for the Battle Masters Beastmen? I’m still disappointed that I didn’t do a Fresian Cow one in my unit!

So it's been a while again! I do have plans for those beastment, and yes they are going to be a bit like those kinds of cows, i think. Nice and friendly looking beastmen!
In the meantime, I went on a whim and ordered the nightstalker army box for Kings of War and i think i got.... more than i should have?
Here's what the box is supposed to contain:
And here's a part of what I got. The scarecrows were omitted for space but i got the right amount of those
It's a lot more, right? There's the three butcher guys, that's normal, but there's also three of each leader? Where there's supposed to be one. And those guys with the big spiky arms in the middle, I'm not even sure what they are! Whatever they are, there's not enough bases for them. It's quite odd. Was i just lucky, or am i missing something here?

There are two blogs!
I'm not sure I realised. Anyway - hooray! It looks to me like you definitely got some extras. An absolute score - especially given how creative you like to get with bits. Can't wait to see what you do with them
The army as a whole looks really fun and flavourful. Pumpkin heads and straw hats kind of give me Harvest Reaper from Westfall vibes - super nostalgic!

It looks like you got 3x Reapers (spiky arms), 3x Phantoms (swoopy yelling ghost things), 2x extra Horrors (purple lightning bird person), 2x less Shadowhounds (doggo thing) and no Shade (yelling guy on rock)?? What a bizarre mixup, and worthy of contacting Mantic re: the missing hounds and shade, IMO. The shade's an awesome sculpt you'll probably only ever use one of, and the hounds are a 4-5 per unit situation. You sort of lucked out on the Horrors, since you need 3 to create a Horror Riftweaver pseudo-monster, which is sort of a gaggle of them that forms a strange-if-mediocre critter. Or more likely you'll just use one as a hero

Yes a call to Mantic would be in order...accidents happen.
My two cents,

Yeah, the pumpkin heads are a lot of fun! i just wish there was more varieties to them. Well, that's where getting creative with bits comes in, like you said! i hope i can pull something fun off at least.

Thanks, I will contact them. it's pretty odd... i might use one of the reaper guys for one of the leader types at least since three is nowhere near enough for a unit. The horror riftweaver could be interesting, though it looks a bit dull they way they did it in the book. Lots of things to consider I guess.
In the meantime i did a test painting of one guy. I wanted to use an extremely simple scheme, to get these done, while still looking ok and giving me a chance to practice washes and drybrushing. It is... a work in progress.
Next: Turtles!

As promised, here is such as a turtle!
Ok, so this is more of a "look at this neat thing i just got" post than anything else but still. Look at this neat thing i just got! it was basically made for me.

Thanks! I'm working on the turtle and the rest of the nightstalkers right now!
but first i got a little distracted again....
by these guys:
yes, i now have a third excelsior warpriest (with obligatory head swap) and far, far more importantly, a third tiny gryph hound! who needs three of them you ask? not me, because i need more
seriously, gw, enough with the giant style figures. tiny adorable war animals is where its at.

It's been a while since i posted anything here! (like really a while) but i felt like this guy was more fitting to this blog.
Here's a lord of blights! I intend to use him in silver tower, which yes i still play.
He's part of my ongoing effort to never paint anything directly green on a nurgle type figure.

Nice colours on the blight lord - I think blue might be Nurgle's colour after all rather than green, and the copper looks nice and old. Now I'm picturing a unit of seven (I think that is Nurgle's number), in every colour of the rainbow bar green...
The skin on those monsters looks really good too; the washing and dry brushing practice paid off!

He looks sick and jolly in equal parts, I wish him well in the Silver Tower

Thanks! Yeah, i'm making tiny tiny bits of progress! I think worn copper is one of my favorite colors to paint.

That's the nurgle way! He had a fun little adventure too.
So, here's a slightly different fantasy person
Bones!

I love the bone-walking bone-throne bone-caster for just how bone-extra it is. Stuff like this really separates Age of Sigmar from fantasy! I love your cold blue bone contrasting with the warm bone of the construct!

That’s a fancy boney lad, nicely painted too turtles. Like Gwyn says the blue and the bone Walker complement each other well. Will you be voyaging from Silver Tower to the cursed city?

Lovely work on bonewalker, his color scheme also evokes a bit of a seraphon vibe, maybe he was created from slann bones.

Much thanks! He really is the boniest, and no bones about it. Or a lot of bones about it.
I'm glad you like the colors, that's what i was going for!

Thank you! I'd like to try out the cursed city, but it may have to wait a bit. It's pricey!

Thanks, and hm... that's an intriguing thought. I haven't given too much thought to these guys backstory but that could be fun.
In the meantime and speaking of silver tower... the darkoath chief!
That picture is tiny.
Edit: Also! I updated my blog a couple of times and i have a new update coming soon. It is silly, check it out!

Darkoath chief looks great, like he came out of a Manga. Really loving your unique color schemes.
