Adepta Sororitas - Order of the Cleansing Blade @ 2019/01/05 21:26:05

Post by: Max Moray

Hi everyone,

I’m Max posting from Germany. I mostly like building, sculpting and converting models for fun. Had many breaks in the last 25 years in which all the stuff spent months and years in storage due to many moves and jobs with limited private life. I love SciFi, especially the 40K setting and the Sisters of Battle are my favorite faction.

Towards the end of last year I decided to try and build an Adepta Sororitas Kill Team from a yet to describe order minoris. I know it would be easier to just convert the upcoming plastics, but I’m doing this mostly for the fun of building and maybe games with friends using homebrew rules, so I don’t think I need to wait for the plastics. My idea was to scratch build the entire team, because I was never too fond of the metal models and wanted more modern (especially in terms of proportions) and unique models for a long time. While doing so, it turned out to be that much fun I thought about building a little 40K force. I have unassembled Exorcist, Rhino and Immolator in storage anyways and they would finally find some use.

For the infantry I set myself the following goals:
- All basically scratch built or at least converted
- No two identical models
- All should look like official art and fanart and have typical equipment and insignia
- Proportions should be like Veridyan, SoS, Celestine and the Geminae and not like the metal models
- Usability in 40K games is secondary (I don’t play competitive)
- They should be as awesome (at least to me)

I’ll use this thread as a kind of log on the project and will introduce the girls in the following posts. CC, questions and discussions are welcome of course.

Cheers, Max.

This is the first one I finished in Nov. 2018. A so far nameless Sister Militant inspired by this piece of art: https://i.pinimg.com/originals/02/37/ff/0237ff4320f34d5ee2fc9efaa5ff9151.jpg

Made mostly from Brown Stuff, Magic-Sculpt, press molds for many details. Scale is in line with Celestine, Veridyan and the SoS, so they should fit well with this year's releases. Detail press molds are from Celestine for the legs, left hand and the front of the torso, Shoulder pauldron eagle and fleur from one of the Geminae, face from a Raging Heroes Jailbird (not the hair though), backpack from Veridyan.

The next minis I made were 3 Sisters Superior or Celestians. I know normal Celestians can't have the Power Sword / Pistol combination in official rules so far, but I think it would make sense if they could have melee weapons like Power Swords, Power Maul, Power Axe or at least a Chainsword in addition to a Bolter Pistol, Inferno Pistol, Handflamer or Plasma Pistol. Many Celestians probably were Sisters Superior before being raised to their new rank.

This one has a Plasma Pistol and a Power Sword.

This fine warrior is awaiting her enemies on a windy cliff.

This one is just turning around.

And here's group shot of the first four Sisters.

Really nice work! Any armatures in there or was it all built freehand off your molded legs? Great project either way, I salute your ambition. Also, tip of the hat to "Sisters Superior."

Thanks, MacPhail! On these I used no wire aside very few pins. Brown Stuff with Cyanoacrylate hardens quickly, I use this to combine parts molded or sculpted separtedly or to create internal support or a kind of 'armature' when needed. I'm curious how far my ambition gets me with this.

Thanks, Mmmpi! I guess in the course of this year it will become quite easy to make similar (or better ones) with the new plastic models. :-D

The next models I made (Dec. 2018) are a group of Dominions with meltas and a Sister Superior with Power Sword and Inferno Pistol. Dominions have no specific models in the official metal range, so far you have to use standard Sisters (mostly with specialist weapons). I think Dominion models should be charging, attacking, breaking enemy lines being the most aggressive and hot blooded warriors of their order. So I tried giving them more active poses.

Briefly thought about giving all Dominions headbands, but had already sculpted the hair of the others.

“I’m gonna need two Eviscerators for this heresy” - Palatine Sister Evie

As a martial arts mistress of the Order of the Cleansing Blade Evie wields a double bladed Eviscerator Glaive to mow down all those who refuse to repent. Countless men have lost their heads over and due to her.

She’s the last model I made 2018. Scratch built from Brown stuff, Magic Sculpt and also a little Green Stuff. Detail press molds from Celestine, Geminae, Sisters of Silence, Verydian, a borrowed earring (Fleur on the hilts) and the face of a spare Raging Heroes head. It’d be great if Palatines could become a HQ choice in the new Codex.

Veteran Sisters Repentia Inferna and Nora

"The fog was thick as Cadian pea soup. Only when I heard their inspiring hymnals passing my desolate position, I became aware that an attack must have been ordered and left the trench. Out of a sudden hissing flames cut the fog apart and engulfed the traitor’s pillboxes, instantly silencing any defensive fire. The hungry growls of a few dozen super-sized chainswords rose all around me drowning the death cries of the incinerated. Then I found myself amidst this storming horde of wild furies in crimson red rags throwing themselves and their eviscerators into the smoldering breaches the flamers had cut." – Report of an unnamed Guardsman on an employment of Sisters Repentia

Idea behind the models: a few Sisters Repentia - only the strongest and incredibly lucky ones - do not die easily. They survive many battles and become veterans. Armed with a combination of Eviscerator and Heavy flamer they form the suicidal spearhead of their repentant force, breaking up enemy formations, which are then cut down by their junior comrades in repentance. They might also form the bodyguard of the Mistress of Repentance or other Sisters of elevated rank and most happily give their life to protect them.

Had this idea when I saw the Pious Vorne model from Blackstone fortress. The weapon looks impractical, heavy and without power armor, you’d better not skip gym to often to use it. That’s why I made them quite buff. As usual made from Brown stuff, Magic-Sculpt and also a little Green Stuff (head cloth and some seals). Detail press molds from Pious Vorne, Prodos Crusader torsos and Escher arms. Heads are failed attempts from other models, which I hid under the red cloth. Also rotated the flames to make them parallel.

Awesome order
That back and red hits the spot!
And that dual-chain wielder looks supremely badass. Well done!

Same color scheme I have for my inquisition force https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/761474.page
I have small sister force to support the IG AM army, haven't got to them yet.

The Order of the Cleansing Blade would look appropriate leading my Strelets

Thanks Mothsniper! It's basically the color scheme of the Order of Our Martyred Lady (from which the Order of the Cleansing Blade descended) with some minor changes for the higher ranked Sisters.

Order of Our Martyred Lady indeed.
As oppose to creating uniquely new organizations, I am more likely to create the Chapters, Ordos, Kabals, Groups that are very very close to the standard organizations with just a slight branching, a kin to a mini-expansion.
That way it is deeply rooted in the lore and has strong base. Keep up the work!

“I love the smell of burning heretics in the morning” – Legatine Sister Xandrine

Xandrine is not only one of the most skilled warriors of the Order of the Cleansing Blade, she also serves her fellow sisters as a shining example and spiritual leader. Into battle she carries the legendary Eviscerator ‘Sweetteeth’ and an antique hand flamer she calls her ‘Little Lighter’.

Built out of more than 25 individual parts made from Brown stuff, Magic Sculpt and very little Green Stuff. Detail press molds from Celestine, Geminae, Sisters of Silence, Verydian, Pious Vorne and the modified face of a spare Raging Heroes head.

She is based on this illustration by Lars Bundvad: https://www.deviantart.com/vanagandr/art/Sororitas-433554528

This is amazing. Scale-wise, they're 32mm? 35mm?

If you're making the models from 25 individual parts, maybe sculpt the larger individual "hard" armor pieces (thigh, forearm, shoulderpad, backpack) and cast sets of them in resin - then, you could just assemble the joints and other "soft" stuff to speed the process.

Adepta Sororitas - Order of the Cleansing Blade @ 2019/01/18 15:48:17

Post by: Max Moray

Thanks, JohnHwangDD!

They are between 32 and 36 mm from Sole to top of their hair depending on their pose. They are leaner and much taller than the offical metal Sororitas, but in scale with modern releases such as Escher gang, Celestine and the Geminae (at least 35 mm when they were standing), Greyfax, Sisters of Silence, Verydian (37 mm!) and e.g. Pious Vorne (33 mm). So I think they might coincide in scale with the upcoming plastic sisters.

Thanks for the suggestion. Your are certainly right about resin casting of some parts making this more time efficient in the long run. I'll consider that. So far I use surplus putty (I always mix too much) to make pieces such as shoulder pads or backpacks by pushing it in some press mold and cleaning it up later.

Holy Trinity indeed!
So good. Damn it now I want to play (DoW - SoulStorm) !

Hey man, what do you think about adding a bit of green-stuff underneath the foot to "extend" the base a bit. Just a little piece of brick or tile for the bolter sister.
I like those long sleeves! Gives me an idea to make a long gown style tabart-tunic with extra long sleeves for my sisters

I had tried to put a skull under the foot, But I did not like it and removed it before painting. Found it better as it is now. Do you think it looks bad or wrong the way it is? Could have also simply put her on a 32 mm.

Yes, I like these red gowns, too. Might try to make some battle torn ones (as often illustrated) in the future.

It doesn't look bad, plus you are building the force for your self so the only thing that matters is how you think it looks, I just mentioned it because I know that would bother me. But at same time having a "none-circular" base that looks different from other bases would bother me more.
I do have some models that go from edge to edge of base, and plan to address that during dressing-up base stage... somehow.
For example, For this rocket team a quick plate was a quick solution that would leave me mind at ease, and allow me to move on.

Ooo battle torn gowns! Oh and billowing in the wind pieces of fabric and holy parchments! So much cool stuff to do, so little time in a day.

I think bases are a good way - aside the style and the color scheme of the miniatures themselves - to forge models into an army. As long as they do that and have something in common, things like skulls, rocks or plates to enlarge a base are ok and sometimes even beneficial as you show. Didn't like it on the Sister mentioned above, though. The skull looked like it was about to roll of the base.

Also, got a new Sister...

Sister Hospitaller Edwina from the Order of the Healing Fire. She is deployed to the Order Militant of the Cleansing Blade as a Combat Chirurgeon. Edwina and her Sisters have taken a vow to preserve life. However, witches, xenos and heretics are not seen as life, but as a disease that needs to be purged. Therefore, the Sisters of Order of the Healing Fire are just as capable in dealing mortal wounds as healing them.

Very nice! I recently got the "regular" one assembled, and she's really nice, aside from the rebreather which should have been a surgical mask.

Thanks JHDD!

I had the regular (metal) one, too. Thinks it's one of the best minis, maybe the best mini of the old Sisters range. I couldn't find it recently, though, when I went through the boxes of shame for hours. Hope it's not gone and just hiding somewhere.

I liked the face as it is (from Rogue Trader's Sanistasia Minst), so I decided not to add a mask.

Thanks! I hope I will!

I'm thinking red long skirts (Delaque or Pious Vorne like) or long loin cloth, purity seals, somewhat muscled (Jailbird or Escher like), bald or with red cloth executioner masks, no power armor (but probably SFW), mighty Eviscerators, scars, cool poses, screaming, ravaging, repenting. Not too far off the standard design and in line with Veteran Sisters Repentia Inferna and Nora pictured above.

They are currently not my priority, though. Still building Heavy Bolter Retributors and some Stormbolterettes, also have released two Rhinos from storage for Repressor conversions and there are still some half-arsed converted Saint and Geminae mid-paint as well as a Melta Dominion I forgot on the desk... Many ideas, days are too short.

Saint Sepherine and her two Geminae Superia. Sepherine once was a young Novice Advance of the Order of our Martyred Lady, a Novice of ardent zeal as well as highest purity. She was trapped, tortured for weeks and at last burned alive by an infamous witch cult millennia ago. Whenever times seem hopeless for the Order of the Cleansing Blade, she may appear on the battlefield as an avenging angel cutting and burning heretics and xenos alike. She often is accompanied by two long gone canonesses of the Cleansing Blade, who merciless ravage and ignite all enemies of the Emperor while defending their Saint.

Every order needs some Saints, so I converted a set of Celestine for the Order of the Cleansing Blade and painted them in the order’s colors to make them fit in. I wanted blades and fire. Celestine got two flaming swords and the birds had to move. The Geminae are supposed to be former canonesses in the official lore, too, however the models looked almost like standard Seraphim. Therefore, I added a torch, changed the weapons to different swords (Dreamforge) and homemade Stormbolters. They also got Verydian or Ephrael like skull boobs to make them more canonessy. The swords of all three are Incinerator swords, which set anything they touch on fire, even matter that usually does not burn such as steel, ceramite or the stone cold heart of your ex.

“Those heretics will soon taste our steel. Deus Imperator vult, Sisters!” – Crusader Captain Maria de Moriet

Countless Crusader Houses exist across the Empire. Unlike the Sisters of the Adepta Sororitas, who are orphans raised by the Ecclesiarchy, the Crusaders of the Sisterhood of the Crimson Linen are without exception highborn daughters of nobles, who voluntarily traded the extravagant luxury of their decadent families for a simple life of asceticism, piety and merciless bloodshed in the name of the Emperor. Just as these armswomen admire the Adeptus Sororitas for their zeal, they are themselves respected by the Sisters of Battle for their unbreakable dedication and close combat proficiency.

Felt like building Crusaders to run along with my Order of the Cleansing Blade. Female Crusaders such as the Sisters of the Silvered Sphinx or Cassara Novia. The old two official models may be rather static, but I think such a stoic, space-saracan-awaiting pose fits Crusaders well, so I tried to keep that feel. What I like the most about the old Crusader models, though, are the hooded bathrobes. Immediately felt connected to them. I mean, who doesn’t like wearing them all day? Of course my custom Crusaders had to have hooded bathrobes, too.

Made from Brown Stuff and Magic Sculpt with press molds from Geminae, Celestine, Sisters of Silence, the Eldar Ranger and Missionary from Blackstone Fortress, faces/hair of Prodos Crusaders, shields of Raging Heroes Knights of the Chalice and last not least the back of the robes of a GW Crusader and some of their inquisition signs.

Yes the robes!
Not enough robes in 40K universe I feel.
Goof job on the sculpts because, for my battle priest I contemplated the robe being red, tan, raw-umber, or black. Ended up going with black because the surface of my sculpt was not smooth enough to receive white, tan, or red colors.
I love the FirstBorn / High Noble origins. That is a devotion of choose and not circumstance. And the (hero) poses do reflect the concept of nobility and solidity quite well.

"Suffer not the Heretic" !

Adepta Sororitas - Order of the Cleansing Blade @ 2019/03/12 11:02:27

Post by: Max Moray

There are no uneven surfaces on robes, that's just some minor battle damage.
Seriously, from the pictures I think the robes of your priest are very good and could have been painted in whatever color you like. They look good in black, though.

Took me also some time to decide on the robes of the Crusaders. At first I wanted to make them black like most Crusader robes in official and fanmade art are, but I also wanted some red cloth on the models and I really like painting red robes, so I went for red robes in the end.

This is next level stuff. The proportions and posiing is excellent.
Do you plan on covering all units in the codex?

Thanks, NotVaughan!

Honestly, I don't plan that much on that project at all. The ones I like the most were rather spontaneous ideas I followed through, while some planned Sisters are still unfinished, because at some point I wanted to do something else.

I think I already got enough Sisters for a Kill Team, I don't know if I will really make an entire 40K army from putty. I'm still motivated, though.

That said, I don't know if I will cover all codex units, it's well possible. I make them mostly for the fun of making them. Playing with them is secondary.

Post by: Max Moray

Well, currently I can only offer you my take on a Canoness. Had a number of Canoness plans, but she’s a good example for a rather spontaneous mini, which defied all those plans. Good thing is an order can (and should) have more than one Canoness, so I can still add a different one in the future. For now I wanted a very tough and a little battle torn warrior type of Canoness. Please meet Alessa.

“Understand Sisters, faith can cut as sharply as any blade, so our minds and hearts shall and must be red and bloody just as our blades.” – Canoness Alessa of the Order of the Cleansing Blade

Alessa served the Order of the Cleansing Blade for more than two decades as the Sister Superior of a Seraphim squad when she was elevated to the position of a Battle Canoness. Her favored weapons are the infamous power lance Longinetta and a master crafted bolter named Breka. Her equipment is decorated with the skulls of long gone pious warriors serving the cause of the Emperor even after their death. Her pet cherub Lucky supports her in battle and will gnaw on the ankles of any fiend foolish enough to approach her. Alessa is always found where battle is toughest, preferably leading deepstrikes into enemy territory. Recently, some young adepts of the Administratum voiced the opinion that jump packs should no longer be appropriate for a Sororitas with the high rank of a Canoness. Alessa however does not seem to care a whit about such blasphemous ramblings.

Scratch built with Brown Stuff, Magic Sculpt, a nail and eggshells from more than two dozen parts with detail press molds from metal Celestine (cherub), metal canoness (sword, incense thingy), plastic Celestine & Geminae (legs, backpack, shoulder pads), Sisters of Silence (fur pattern), Veridyan (chest plate), metal imagifier (rear tip of Longinetta), Greyfax (face (sort of) and hand) and probably some parts I forgot. Longinetta is a reference to the "real" Lance of Longinius. Therefore, a real nail had to be used in the lance.

I've really been enjoying your work and meant to post something long before this. It wasn't until I backtracked and read everything from Item 1, Page 1 forward that I realized you were casting and fabricating your own figures, albeit as composites from a myriad of sources plus your own brown- and greenstuff work.

All I can say is: extremely well done! The poses are realistic, the articulation is terrific, the proportions are perfect. The figures attract visual interest as individuals and in groups are very distinctive. Frankly, GW would be lucky to be able to hire you in as a figure designer- especially to help with some long overdue modernizations for the Sisters of Battle range.

I look forward to following along as you introduce more pieces.

While this sounds like fun, I hope GW do it a lot better than a hobbyist with press moulds and epoxy putty. I like quite a number of releases from the last years (SoS, Escher...) and I love the plastic Celestine and Geminae, which I took as my main source. Actually, I also hope they have their designs done already if they want a release this year.

“Their blood is my offering. Their last breath is my prayer. Their death is my faith.” – Death Cult Assassin Sonexa of the Temple of Xoss

For my first death cult assassin I had to use something of Knosso Prond as the latest official death cult assassin release, but the head had to be all different (I wanted a face to paint) as well as the pose. As weapons I made tonfa blades… and the hair had to be some kind of dreads of which I am not sure if they are hair or mechanic parts. Made with Brown Stuff and Magic-Sculpt as well as very little Green Stuff. Detail press molds from Rythali-in (chestplate), Jailbirds (face, legs), Knosso (arms) and Veridyan (skull knees).

For this death cult assassin (2/3) I started with Knosso Prond. Again head (now a face from a Prodos crusader) and pose had to be changed, as weapons I built more tonfa blades and the hair had to be dreads. Made of Brown Stuff, Magic-Sculpt, very little green stuff and using press molds for details. Edit: wrong pic, Edit2: Didn't like the red legs...

For my third death cult assassin I also started with Knosso Prond using detail press molds, but went for a different pose and head. Left hand was made with a press mold from a Jailbird. Made of Brown Stuff, Magic-Sculpt and very little green stuff.

“Their blood is my offering. Their last breath is my prayer. Their death is my faith.” – Death Cult Assassin Sonexa of the Temple of Xoss

The Temple of Xoss is an ancient death cult dating back several millennia. Nevertheless it was frowned upon by the ecclesiarchy due to its lack of hymnals and its questionable obsession with the blood of their enemies. With the beginning of the Sorex incursion countless Khornate cults rose on the moons of the namesake planet, entire guard and pdf regiments turned traitor and it was expected that the Temple of Xoss too would now reveal its true nature as a cult of the ruinous powers. But this forecast proved wrong. Not one of the Death Cultists turned to Chaos. When the traitor forces were about to overwhelm a contingent of the Adepta Sororitas, it was the three Mistress Assassins of Temple of Xoss, who eliminated twelve fearsome leaders of the Chaos hordes and lost their own lives in this suicidal mission. It was only their pious sacrifice, which allowed the Sisters of Battle to defeat und finally purge the superior traitor forces. Since that day the devotion and loyalty of the Death Cult Assassins of the Temple of Xoss have never been called in question again.

"Here we bloody well are, and here we bloody well stay. Hold the line, Sisters!" – Sister Superior Vassina

Scratch built a squad of Heavy Bolter Retributors encouraged by their leader. Rending Retributors once were a major threat on the battlefield, but the variability of the model(s) was rather limited. Wanted to give mine different and more defensive poses compared to my storming Dominions. Used Brown Stuff, Magic-Sculpt, Green Stuff (for the belts) and press molds for details from Celestine and her Geminae as well as Raging Heroes’ Cruz, which I like so much I had to copy the pose and the gun (modified). The Storm Bolter of the Sister Superior is my own design mix, which I also used for my converted Geminae.

“Have to fly closer! I want to hit them with my sword” - Sister Sabina on her Artemis Pattern Jetbike.

The bike was built by Jeston, a young Mechanicus Tech-Priest, who had developed romantic and therefore inappropriate feelings for the Dominion Sabina. He used spare Dawneagle parts found by the Order of the Cleansing Blade in what appeared to be the remains of a lost Custodes expedition. Tragically, Jeston died after finishing his masterpiece, saving his love interest’s life by throwing himself into the screaming Chainsword of a charging Chaos Space Marine. Although his feelings had never been answered, his skull holding a rose is now part of the bike. Even though Sabina proved her worth without hesitation using the Jetbike to obliterate several Traitor Marines singlehandedly, her Canoness declared that such a mighty weapon does not belong in the hands of a Dominion. Consequently, she raised Sabina to the rank of a Celestian.

I used this picture by Daniel Brewer as inspiration: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/QQymr

The Custodes Jetbike underwent some severe modifications. The back had to be much flatter. Then, the engine went from the front to the back. All original five wings were omitted, instead two larger wing tips from a model plane (Revell Tupolev) were added. I made the front much slimmer to give the bike kind of a waist line and a more elegant look. Out of the frontal air intake I made two lateral ones. Also changed the weaponry: the Artemis is equipped with a frontal Tornado Bolter (basically 1.5 Storm Bolters or 1/2 Hurricane Bolter) and below the eagle a Multi Melta for proper purging. The new arched hood was cast from the back of a toy dolphin.

Sabina’s details are mostly from the plastic Celestine and friends set (Brown stuff, Green Stuff and Magic Sculpt with press molds for details), a modified Sisters of Silence sword and a modified Prodos face.

"Fight, and the God Emperor will fight through you." - Canoness Josepha Evangeline

Scratch built me a Canoness with the Blade of Admonition for the Order of the Cleansing Blade. Was a rather spontaneous idea. The backpack is modified from the metal canoness. The helmet is modified from the immolator sprue with a skulled fleur copied from a metal Seraphim Superior over a modified Geminae breast plate. Skull boobs from Veridyan (like my other Canonesses). Face was modified from Prodos.

“When the angels come to them, they will not hear the rustle of wings, nor feel the feathery touch of the breast of a dove, but they will know our presence by the blades in their treacherous hearts.” - Palatine Sister Mica of the Order of the Cleansing Blade.

Palatines are the martial arts mistresses of their order dedicated to achieve perfection in their individual fighting skills as well as teach their fellow sisters. In battle they can be employed as lone fighters putting their skills up to the test against champions of the enemy or as leaders of elite Battle Sister troops. Mica serves as the Sister Superior of an infamous Seraphim squad, the Angry Angels, who excel in spectacular deep strikes as well as in intercepting enemy jump infantry, their favorite prey in the name of the Emperor being Raptors.

Mica’s my latest take on Seraphim. When the Geminae were released it became pretty easy to convert your own Seraphim and the 2019 plastic Seraphim probably will look quite similar to the Geminae. For Mica I wanted a different, slimmer torso, because you probably are more maneuverable when you are on the petite side. The tip of her power lance is copied from Ephrael to include at least one thing from the metal range, the face is from Statuesque. Instead of a flight stand or the Geminae seals I chose a ruined pillar. Maybe I’m going to make more characters of the Angry Angels.

_THAT_ is freakin' cool!

Have you thought of a way to have expended brass falling from the ejecting ports? Maybe glued to a bit of very lightweight fishing line and attached to the bolters?

I did up a couple of Urban Mammoth Archangels that way, once upon a time....

Excellent work!

I'd like to see what you have done. My last experiment with fishing line to make some free flying birds became a complete and utter mess and the line was clearly visible. So while I love the idea I don't think I can do that in a convincing way. Still struggeling with the green stuff belts, because they won't cure properly (tried heat, a little CA), it was an alomst 20 year old batch I found in a box. Think they'll get a thin coat of CA or 2 part epoxy glue or I'll redo them.

Thanks for bringing the Urban Mammoth minis back to my attention. Almost forgot about them. There are some nice sculpts. Maybe I need to place an order prior to Brexit.

I never did take photos at the time, I'll dig them out and see if they are worth taking pics now to post up- as I recall (this was several years ago) I had seen the trick done and the guy was very good. Mine, the line was visible, partly because I was a bit ham handed getting the CA glue to try to stick long enough in one place- it fogged the nylon line. I tried to hide it with pulled apart and stained cotton ball material to make it look like the jet pack was whooooshing, but the attempt was pretty lame.

I'll have to try again, see what I can do now that I'm older, wiser, blinder, shakier.....

Same. In addition, the centre of gravity was off on all of the birds and they looked as if they were dying midflight.

Definitely like the officer/sergeant/veteran on the left- the pose is very dynamic and the proportions are spot on. The heavy gunner on the right is well-proportioned and realistic, but the melta looks a little bent, at least in this pic. I think it's the equipment bunched at the butt end of the weapon; in an unpainted state it looks like part of the weapon and isn't in line with the mechanism.

Having said that, I can't even come close to what you achieve, so well done! Very happy to see new works coming out.

Thanks a lot, Meer_Cat!

I am not entirely happy with the retributor, either (mostly because of the right hand grip), but I had this magnificient RH ("Domino Jax") flamer with all its gimmicks modified and wanted to try it out on a sister. The "bent" part you are referring to is the second fuel tank (it's not well visible in the potato pic). It sits at an oblique angle to allow a rear grip. Think I'll paint it up to see if it makes sense. It's easily cut off if it does not.

Converted a used and half broken Rhino I acquired long ago into a Repressor (“counts-as-repressor” if you prefer that) and tried to make it fit in with the style of my homemade infantry. The dozer blade and the passenger compartment are magnetized. The gunner girl and the Stormbolter turret are on corks and can also be changed, so this vehicle can still be used as a Rhino.

Found at least twelve more Adepta Sororitas vehicles, many bits in my storage, most bought or swapped in used condition, but also unbuilt boxes and am currently considering what to make out of that. Think I could make at least two more of this repressor with different details and in the long run maybe 3 of each type of vehicle (Rhino, Immolator, Exorcist, Repressor). Given I will probably also get another one of each from the upcoming line, those will be more than I can ever field, so they don’t have to be just practical. Recommendations and CC welcome.

The passenger compartment is a modified part from WGE, headlights are also WGE. The Dozer blade is slightly modified from Kromlech I think. The Gunner (I call her Tank girl) is made from Brown Stuff and Magic Sculpt with press moulds from Celestine, Amalia and a Sequitor’s head. The flames on the exhausts are copied from the metal Canoness backpack, the shrine from a Bretonian banner and the fleurs below the headlights are press moulds from an earring, armor and other details from the Immolator/Exorcist box. The girl on the blade is based on a piece of art by Liam Hammond.

Exceptional work, Max! The overall look is exactly what Sisters should be piloting into battle. I have always preferred the look of the angular demolition plow blade to the flat, square look of an engineering blade- go big or go home; the purpose of the Army is to kill people and break stuff, and you can do that better with an angular blade!

Tank Girl is very well done also, I can't believe how much of your own fabrication you do and yet they come out looking like factory production pieces and I mean that in a good way!).

Thanks Meer_Cat and Captain Brown!

Since Repressors prior to their use on battlefields were designed to act as anti-riot-vehicles intended to be able to quickly clear a path through urban obstacles and crowds I find this type of blade adequate, but foremost I simply like how blades/plows of some WWII tanks looked (especially the urban Panther Ausf D with the dozer blade) and took them as inspiration (Stug IV & Panther found via pinterest):

‘I’m not done repenting. I’m not done fighting.’
‘There is nothing we can do.’
‘The machines… We don’t have enough heretics for them. We burnt them all. Give me to one of the machines!’
‘Your pain will multiply.’
‘Yes, I am aware, Canoness. I beg you…’
‘So be it. You sacrifice shall not be forgotten.’

The Mausoleum of Sister Leonore: A modular piece of terrain I made for the 30th installment of the League of Extraordinary Riveters Terrain Competition on Dakka Dakka. Per rules of this round of the competition the terrain piece has to have several options (motto: "Double Entendre"). Mine can be used as a standard terrain piece with a base holding the rockcrete coffin and statue inside. Alternatively the base can be used as a roof, e.g. for display purposes. In addition, the statue may serve as an objective marker fiercely held and defended by the Sisters of the Order of the Cleansing Blade.

Here’s the link to the competition featuring many superb pieces by a number of great hobbyists: https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/779101.page

WIP pics of my contribution and the materials used (e.g. a fancy little bucket) are also found in a gallery here: https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/images-122787-61696_Terrain%20WIP.html

Ephrael Stern Challenge

Ephrael Stern, also known as the Thrice-Born, Daemonifuge, and Heretic Saint is one of, if not the, most badass Sister of Battle. For many years we have not heard of the heroine of the Daemonifuge graphic novel series, but in late 2019 she was mentioned (without actually giving her name) in Psychic Awakening: Phoenix Rising and then the continuation of her story was announced in the Black Library Weekender.

Given it is highly probable we’ll get a plastic version of her limited out-of-print metal miniature next year, what better time could there be for an Ephrael Stern Challenge? I’ll try to create my own Ephrael Stern miniature inspired by the graphic novels and especially the new cover art by Tazio Bettin revealed and I'll post my progress right here. Wanna join? Let me know.

The first parts I took as templates are all from the GW Geminae. I used the outside of the left and right thighs, two lower legs, front plate including the grenade, back of a torso and a gorget. I made oyumaru pressmolds of those details, filled them with a mixture of Magic-Sculpt and Brown Stuff and once almost set put them together using brown stuff and power glue. When still not completely hard I gave the torso a twist as there is one in the illustration but not in the plate of the Geminae.

The Ephrael Stern Challenge continues...

Next templates I used were the arms of Celestine including the open left hand (changed the thumb a little), the right hand of her sword (but nothing else of the sword) and the sword of metal Ephrael Stern including the tiny skull pommel (which will be added later). If you look closely at the new cover art you can see her bolt pistol is on her left hip behind the grenade. Because the bolt pistol of metal Ephrael is rather large for more modern miniatures (as are her hands) I'll use the outside of one of the Geminaes' pistols (will also be added later). All parts so far made from a mixture of Magic-Sculpt and Brown Stuff.

Time to add some decorations. Ephrael needs skull boobs and the only other official Sororitas model I am aware of (aside of metal Ephrael) featuring those is Veridyan. I have added them to some of my Canonesses in the past, so this was not too difficult. The knees also got a pair of them and I added the purity seals on the right side of the chest. Tried a lot of different heads, but this one from Statuesque fits best in my opinion (if one was limited to use only GW stuff, the female magus would be my second best head choice). I changed the mouth area of the head to show the teeth. Will also need a jump pack (Geminae) and shoulder pads/pauldrons (also Geminae), but the next step is green stuff robes and hair. Really hope she looks better after that.

The Ephrael Stern Challenge continues...

Added some Green Stuff robes and hair as well as the pistol. Please ignore the “we kill the Batman”-lipstick. Just needed this to see better if I got the two rows of teeth right with the Brown Stuff. Quite some clean up to do now, also the rear part of the robes is too long .

Been a very cool process, really dig how you sampled bits from different Sisters. Excited to see paint pull it all together. (Also Stern is a frigging badass!)

Thank you Nibbler and Boss Salvage!

Added pauldrons, jump pack, shortened the rear robes and added wire for the force lightning, I mean psychic power. A little more cleaning and then painting.

I will call my Ephrael done for now and like how she turned out. Of course there are always steps that could have been done better and I learned a thing or two.

Thanks to all of you for following the progress and the encouraging comments.

Almost all the sisters of the Order of the Cleansing Blade were made in a similar fashion and I can’t wait for new source materials from the upcoming box.

When you want to improve some older painting mistakes on a model, but get carried away, end up with a completely different color scheme, which you like a little better than the old one and now you have to repaint your entire army…

Finally also found the time to build and paint my first sister of the new army box (with a little head swap). Think she fits well with my older scratch built and converted ones.

Thank you, BlISSP!

Taking proper pictures is difficult enough for me, hehe. I have not ventured into the world of video making, editing and publishing, yet. My only attempt to make a video of a rotating mini with my old smart phone did not return a watchable result.

So, currently I have no intention to make videos, but I can offer WIP pics and lists of parts I use for most, e.g. I took pics of every step of the Ephrael Stern found on page 4 of this thread.

Some new Sisters for the Order of the Cleansing Blade. Most have the same body, but as usually I used different arms (and heads obviously), so no two look the same.

The last one is Sister Joanna Vain. The fastest bolter east of the Cicatrix Maledictum.

Excellent pieces- the personality and dynamic motion that comes through with each of them is really amazing. I must admit, I'm a big fan of the 'Cardinal's Guard' red and white livery for Sisters of Battle, but your 'grimy, combat-functional' look is quite striking too.

I think the real testament to your skill is that if you hadn't told me that all the sisters had the same basic body, I probably wouldn't have figured it out. Each is a unique assemblage of the whole, and no way (for me at least) to tell which parts are factory-made and which you have fabricated and which are swapped in from other commercial sources.

Rock on!

I can't paint the red/black/white to the same standard as the new scheme. I love the red/black/white, too, but with regard to my painting skills the new scheme just looks better to me and I came to really like the dirty, grim appearance. When I put one of the old scheme next to a new one, I like the new one better. In person the difference is more striking than on pics. Have no idea what to do with the tanks, Repentia, Crusaders and bikes for now, though. I guess I'll make more of each first for tests before repainting the older ones.

BlISSP wrote:I was wondering, is the fur cloak of your cannoness sculptet or is it a sister of silence one ?

A little bit of both. I made a copy of the outside of the Sisters of Silence cloak using Blue Stuff (Oyumaru) and filled it with a thin layer of a mixture of Magic-Sculpt and Brown Stuff. After a few hours, when the putty was still somewhat flexible I carefully placed it on the back of the mini, shaped it a little to make it fit better and glued it in place with Brown Stuff and power glue. I also cut off the fur in the area of the backpack. Later I added a little putty fur manually on the top of the cloak and hand sculpted the paws and the claws on the shoulder using brown stuff. Then I added a purity seal on the side. Just uploaded a unpainted pic of the back of the mini so it can be seen better.

From the left to the right:

1: Prodos Crusaders/Valkyries putty copy given a haircut and a little new hair to make it fit onto the torso.
2: GW Sequitors with the bun removed and an added putty pony tail.
3: Different head, but the same procedure as 1 (with an added little scar)
4: Different head, but the same procedure as 1 (also with an added little scar)
5: Putty copy of the Raging Heroes Jailbird mecha's spare head with minimal changes on the back.

How exactly did you build and paint the Celestine conversion?

Qyleterys wrote:

This Celestine?

I got this kit second hand. Received it built in the usual way, yet unpainted and the scrolls were strangely warped resulting in an oblique position of Celestine that did not look good and the model was constantly tipping over. Using hot water did not get me the desired improvement so I removed the birds from the original position and used them to fix the scrolls so Celestine is upright again. I modelled some flames with brown stuff (green stuff works, too) on the original sword (EDIT: wrong! I cut the original between hilt and hand and used the blade of a Geminae sword instead so both swords had the same lenth) and used the sword with arm of one of the Geminae for the second sword to which I also added brown stuff flames.

The paintjob is rather simple. Mixture of abbadon black and a craft store black (satin) for the armor with medium and light grey highlights. I mix most of my colors myself because I got plenty of acrylics from other non wargame activities, but the highlights would correlate with thunderhawk blue and ulthuan grey. For the wings I started with a dark red (simply a medium to bright craft red with some black) in the center adding more and more red while painting towards the outside until the tips are about evil sunz scarlet. Used the medium red for the cloth, some of the darker red for the shadows in the the cloth and a little of the bright red (evil sunz like) for the most elevated spots. The same reds were also used for the corset, the hair, lips, the jewel on her left shoulder and the tips of the swords. The silver parts are leadbelcher with a black wash (like nuln oil) and light silver (like stormhost) highlights. For the face I used the Vallejo face painting set per instructions.

That said, while I still like the wings, hair and face I think the armor could look better. Certainly will change the paintjob at some point (also to fit with my latest painted models).

Hey ! could you please show us the materials / tools you use to recast stuff ? i'm particulary interested in heads, if it's not bothering you

the coolest thing about your sisters imo is the fact that each one is really unique , and i think the head does a lot for that

i found also cool that almost all of them have gauntlet instead of gloves, i always preffered gautlet to gloves on sisters

I actually like how the brown scheme is sort of reminiscent of Franciscan monks.

Thanks! That's exactly what I want: an army of unique individuals. And I agree: heads (and especially the hair) make a lot of a mini's uniqueness.

Mostly, because in the beginning of this project I mostly used the Celestine set.

I've been pumped for you to get started o the new plastics and I am not disappointed! I love your color scheme... it evokes a whole level of grimdark authenticity that I hadn't imagined, even having seen it on your other models. If I wind up with a spare plastic bolter model I might just have to mess around with the "tarnished sisterhood" look, it's really cool and something I've never really seen. Nicely done!

Thanks for your kind wirds, BlISSP! So glad to be of help and am looking forward to see your miniature project. As much as I love 'perfect' minis by 'pro-painters' I enjoy what fellow hobbyists make even more, because - as you note - these minis are more attainable, something one could possibly make without decades of practice. And this makes them highly inspiring, makes you think about how to do things and actually try out new stuff and grow.

Found some unexpected spare time to finish more sisters of the Order of the Cleansing Blade.

They might not be perfect, but I really love the faces of the latest four (all putty heads as decribed above by the way).

The one on the lower left is the head from the WIP post above by the way. Actually glued some of the original Sororitas Army Box heads on some other bodies from said Box, but decided they did not fit with my Sisters last night and cut them all off. Will stay to the style of the ones posted here. So... more putty heads it is.

Here are some pics of the new additions. The jump pack Canoness is a repaint of one of my older models.

Finally a group order of dice from Chessex arrived. They were ordered before the announcement of miracle dice last year (0,75$ per dice at 30 dices is very good, 33$ shipping is costly). Very happy with the quality. They also fit well with my RPG dice. Dice bag was a handmade present I alrady had.

Was informed my method of making parts for custom minis using press moulds and putty is considered recasting here and consequently is against the forum rules. A few of my pics and texts have been deleted by a mod for this reason, which is understandable.

First of all, I am sorry for acting against the forum rules, but since almost all the minis in this thread and my gallery were made that way and I'd have to ship around future questions on how I made them, it is pretty pointless to continue posting them here, but rather continue elsewhere (am not that hard to find on the usual social media platforms).

Gladly lately there is plenty of Sister's stuff here anway. Thanks for all the comments and have fun, everyone!

Sorry to hear that, I enjoyed seeing your endeavors and had no issue with it, if that matters at all. Press molds are pretty OG tech in this hobby, and if you aren't making money on it, I don't think you're technically or legally infringing ... But Dakka policy is policy.

I'll try to find you somewhere in the interwebs, good luck. Nice dice as well.

I too am very impressed. The whole threat with all the pictures is a pure source of awesomeness and I would have a hard time to decide which model I like the best.
The faces you paint look awesome and it is really mind blowing how much work you put in to make your models unique, match the proportions to your liking and build dynamic and fitting poses.

Regarding the paint scheme: when I had a first look at the new one scrolling through the threat my first thought was "But I liked the red one!" but after a second and third look the new one is even better. As someone else mentioned it reminds a bit of medival monks. And the execution of the paintjobs is even more stunning than before.

As understanable as the reasons are, it's a pitty that we might not see more of your sculpting work here. Still, keep up the great work, it has been an inspiration for me

Thanks for your kind words! Happy you found the thread inspriring. Am still abusing the gallery for some newer, finished models. Thinks that's ok with the forum rules. The rest is found on FB, although progress became slow, because life.

Am glad I did the repaints, but I am also glad I have the pics of the old color scheme if that makes any sense. Still have to figure out how to do the tanks and the bikes.

Max,

That is too bad you have to remove the explanation of how you replaced/sourced heads.

Since you were not casting to make complete models, but were buying full models and just replacing heads the vendor is not losing out...as the vendor of the heads does not offer those separately from their models do they? And you bought a set of their models as well.

Any ways, keep up your conversions as your Sisters are entirely unique across the board.

My two cents,

CB

Adepta Sororitas - Order of the Cleansing Blade @ 2020/03/02 11:03:37

Post by: Max Moray

Thanks, CB. The model in the deleted post of which I copied the face is not sold anymore. The head was never available as a bit. Noone lost a dime. But that does not matter. While the used method with putty and pressmolds might be perfectly legal (at least where I live and as long as I don't sell the bits), it is against the forum rules to show/explain it, because it is considered recasting here.

I am keeping up with the girls for sure! Quite some have been made in the meantime. Maybe slow but steady.
