Mouldy's Miscellanea - Hive Fleets and High Elves @ 2019/04/08 10:14:15

Post by: mould2k

Hello all.

Like a lot of wargamers, I have too many projects on the go and hobby butterfly-itis means I never seem to get to a place where I consider anything complete.

To that end, and as a simple record of what I have done when, I am starting this log to hopefully focus the mind and push towards some "completed" projects.

With that in mind, I am aiming to do the following (in no particular order):

Repaint 2,000pts of Tau - Current completion 500/2,000
As per my signature, I have approximately 3,000 points of Tau painted. The majority have been only painted to a fairly basic tabletop standard as they needed to get bashed out in fairly short order for a large game. Since then, I have painted around 500 points more in a slightly altered scheme and to a higher standard. The plan is to get a total of approx 2k of my existing models stripped, and repainted in the shiny new scheme.

The new scheme as modelled by my Coldstar Commander:

Genestealer Cultists - Current completion 900/1,000
I've recently started collecting GSC as well, essentially as the antithesis to the above Tau. This is an army that I get to participate in all phases of the game rather than just the shooting phase. It also helps that all their models are new and fresh! I have an escalation campaign starting soon where the first checkpoint is 1,000 points so that is what i am working towards. I'm nearly there...unless I decide to tweak my list and take something else. A lot of the points are tied up in purestrains that I will likely get rid of.

Here's my latest completed unit - Atalan Jackals:

Expand Lizardmen Fantasy Army - 3,000/4,000
I'm fortunate enough to have a gaming group that still plays old Warhammer Fantasy, but arriving late to the party I had to start my army from scratch. Thankfully I had some 5th edition Saurus in the loft, and after some kind donations and canny purchases I was able to quickly build a 3,000 point army on square bases. The majority of these were painted in a 4 months period so aren't as well painted as my more recent models, but they look great on the battlefield all ranked up. I am looking to gradually increase this army and collect some of the minis I don't yet have.

[Placeholder for pictures]

Idoneth Deepkin Battleforce - Unstarted
Despite playing Fantasy more than AoS, a few of us are dipping our toes in the new system and are enjoying it so far. Frankly this is mostly a thinly veiled reason to paint some new toys, as I could just use my Lizardmen if I really wanted to. But where's the fun in that?

Paint Blackstone Fortress - Unstarted
Not much to say on this, great fun board game with some lovely minis, picked up a box for a bargain price with an eBay code so will be looking to get this painted to the best of my abilities.

Repaint Epic Space Marines - Unstarted
A rummage through my parents' loft found a veritable treasure trove of half painted boxes of models. Whilst a Space Crusade and Heroquest boxes were quickly secured, the more interesting find was a reasonably sizeable Epic Space Marine army from what I am informed was the 3rd edition of Epic. Apparently I was as unfocused at painting as a teenager as I am now, so these are only half painted in a passable Imperial Fists colour scheme, the rest is bare plastic. I'll be looking to get this back into a playable state.

So how many of these will I achieve this year? Well, maybe only a couple. How often will I get distracted with a side project? Probably regularly. Will I keep this log up to date? I'm going to try! Let's see where I end up.

Really cool posing on that Tau Commander! And I'm loving the Jackals. Excellent paintjob on excellent models.

Hello all,

A bit of a milestone: I have got my GSC to approx 1k points! Unfortunately 130 points of that are purestrain genestealers who haven't really made their points in games so far. So they are going to be replaced with either more acolytes or neophytes, maybe both!

Here's some shots of my army so far.

Next up and primed are another squad of neophytes, this time with webbers!

January update

It's just the one Terradon actually

Woo boy it's 2020 already. That came around quick.

So I set this thread up in Spring 2019 with the expectation I would be able to keep it going and updated through the rest of the year. Sadly that didn't happen because I both lost interest in painting for a bit and then became a father (having grossly underestimated how much that would impact on my painting time).

But I have recently got back into the painting groove, and have mostly been focusing on Titans for Adeptus Titanicus. So far I have completed a warlord, 3 questoris, and more recently a pair of warhounds, the second of which I finished on Friday:

Better, lightbox photos to follow.

I've also been working on a skink chief on a terradon for my Lizardmen. My current army is very much slann and saurus focused which, while effective, isn't particularly fun. I am going to focus on getting more skinks in to my list and I have started with a flying skink of death. I've hopped on catgut's coconut crab scheme hype train for the terradon in a nice shocking blue:

I started by blocking out the colours and shading the white.

Then got excited and did the dots despite having not shaded the blue...

So I shaded, reapplied the blue, then re-did the dots. Ooops!

Now just the metal work, feathers, claws and highlights to go.

Also at the back end of last year, I started playing with some test models for the Idoneth battleforce mentioned in my OP. I have in mind the idea of a more dark and grim version of the Idoneth than you normally see. Usually they are brights with sandy beaches and tons of lovely coral. That's great but it didn't sit right with me. In my head, they should look like they are remorseless night raiders from an eternally underwater kingdom, with more of an English Channel than tropical paradise feeling. As such, I went for a more grubby approach, with highly oxidised bronze and rusted aelven steel for the metal work. Originally I did a sea green for the robes, but this clashed with the oxidisation, so I changed to a rich purple.
The basing is meant to simply be mud at this stage, the dry land having been turned damp and soggy by the Idoneth's tidecasting. I think if i carry on with with this I will add puddles with water effects as well as wood planks, sea weed and coils of rope, as though they are raiding some unfortunate coastal community.

Original Sea Green scheme

Updated Purple Scheme

Finally, earlier in Autumn 2019 I started painting some High Elves. I have somehow amassed quite a sizeable force of unpainted High Elves sat on sprues and in boxes without having much done to them. I always want to get an army finished for them but with the number of models to paint it's always intimidated me somewhat. But one of our gaming group is proposing a small campaign using Dragon Rampant rules, which is the perfect opportunity to paint some of the elves in a quantity that doesn't utterly terrify me. Here are the first 6 Sea Guard!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Right after getting home from work, I finished off the flying skink of doom! I'm really happy how this turned out, which obviously means he will die instantly in his next game, which is Sunday!

Additionally, I took some better pictures of my two recently completed Warhounds for Adeptus Titanicus. These are fantastic models and I fully intend on picking up some more...after I paint the knight household boxset I picked up, and a reaver titan!

This is the clean one, I haven't thought of a name for him/her yet. Originally I was going to weather it but I quite like him pristine!

And the more battered one I have taken to calling Pyre of Lucius.

What's next? Well the Skink Chief has got me in the mood for more square based lizards, so it is going to be the start of a mighty skink cohort! Then 4 Knights Cerastus after that. Thanks for reading!

Mouldy's Miscellanea - Hive Fleets and High Elves @ 2020/01/11 17:14:58

Post by: mould2k

After doing a few models that I spent a fair bit of time on for each of them (the warhounds and the skink chief above), next up is the start of a mighty skink cohort!

I'm aiming to get a full unit of around 40 skinks, so these will be bashed out in a bit of a faster, less careful method. Time is money after all!

The final unit is going to be a mix of the current skinks available from GW and the old bow skinks that I will try to convert to shield and javelins.

First step was just a simple coat of Genestealer Purple.

Normally I would start with a base of Daemonette hide but that usually requires a few layers of Genestealer purple after the shade and I am hoping to do a rougher layer or drybrush to get a similar result far quicker!

Next will be a shade of Druchii Violet.

Those titans are very nice, really crisp detail work on their carapaces.

Thanks fingol!

So I managed to have a couple of games with the lizardmen on Sunday, using the 9th Age rule set rather than 8th ed. This was only my second and third games with these rules but I have to say I like them. They feel more measured and less exploit exploitable than 8th ed and at no point did I have to take a whole unit of saurus off to a single spell (looking at you curse of the bad moon).

Game sizes were 3000 points (which I would estimate to be around 2000 in 8th ed) so that we could get a couple of games in each. 3 "good" armies against three "baddies", my Lizards, a force of stoic dwarves and a sprawling human army were arranged against some horrible ratmen, the living dead and some barbaric greenskins.

I went up against the skaven for the first game and won and then sadly lost against the Vampire Counts. Overall the baddies won 4-2 but a good time was had by all and the fantasy bug has bitten us all once again. I am now planning a narrative escalation campaign for us all to use new armies. Personally, I think I'll be going High Elves.

My list for the weekend was:

Cuatl lord (Immortal grasp, BSB)
Skink chief on terradon with spear and shield (well i had just painted him!)
25 Saurus warriors with sword and board
25 Saurus warriors with spears
21 Temple Guard
5 Chameleon skunks
Bastilidon (or Thyroscutus) with sun engine.

MVP for me was the basti, who successfully tanked a hellpit abomination in the first game and steadily killed off 3 vargheist in the second. That 6 armour is a godsend! Makes me want the snake altar variant now...

Here's some pics (more in my gallery)

Some fantasy ring rust evident as I block my temple guard turn 1 with my basti

Meanwhile the heroic skinks try to get round the flanks

The saurus units wheel round to surround the skaven while in the background the humans square off against hordes of greenskins

Game 2 started well as the bastilidon resisted a charge by the vargheists and steadily crushed them in turn...

But the battle was ultimately lost in the centre where the temple guard couldn't hold out against the resurrecting grave guard.

Hello all,

Took a bit of a break from purple lizards to knock up something for an Inquisitor28 campaign that is soon to start. I've never done an RP campaign before, so I thought I would combine it with something else I hadn't done before, kitbashing!

So this guy is my attempt at a Magos Biologis to support the band of reprobates pressed into service by our Inquisitor. I wanted to try to give him a mad doctor look so gave him a white coat, blue surgical glove and plenty of gore:

I also managed to finish 21 skinks for a skink cohort. These were a bit of a struggle, I hate batch painting even when it is basically at a table top standard. It just burns me out. So I just wanted these done, screw the fineries.

I'd already painted 9 old 5th ed bow skinks converted (badly) to have javelins and shields so with these old and pretty badly painted skinks I got to a nice round cohort of 30 T2 skinks!

Next up, these guys need a banner bearer and a musician to coax them into a battle fury. Plus I have second salamander to paint! After that, it'll either be a return to Adeptus Titanicus or some High Elves. Who knows!?

Hello all

So I feel like 2020 may end being the year of the knife ear for me. I've steadily amassed a rather large backlog of high elves over the last 2 years. So far I have painted the 6 sea guard shown earlier in the thread. This is...pathetic.

Thankfully, I have motivation to get a decent chunk of them done! My gaming group are starting an escalation campaign (of my devising) using new armies for us all with the 9th Age rule set we've come to prefer. So, my challenge is to paint up 2,250 pts of high born elves over the coming weeks. Eek.

With that in mind, I am making progress on 6 more sea guard:

These models are fantastic for monopose, full of detail and character. Not fast to paint with their various materials and intricacies however. And yes, they still suffer from the standard monopose issue of weird sculpting where parts just morph into one another. In this case it's the quivers.

So not only do I have vast amounts of high elves to paint in my backlog, and the Idoneth battleforce box mentioned in my OP. But I also was offered a fantastic deal on c.2000+ Craftworld Eldar. The majority of these are metal, most unpainted or primed. Some will need stripping and others will need fixing. But I am rather excited to get started on my own Craftworld paint scheme. Current plan is grey/blue armour, gloss black helms and off white guns. Once Storm Dennis passes I'll prime some guardians and get going on them too...

The command group of the Lothern Sea Guard have been completed and added to the existing 6 test models.

There's a couple of errors, particularly on the banner, but I am very happy with the end result so am not going to go back and adjust. So that's half of my first unit of sea guard done and dusted. Rather than churn out the next 12 for the unit, I am going to do 6 swordsmasters and a reaper bolt thrower next. The bolt thrower is the older metal multiple bolt model, so it is going to be interesting to see if it fits the newer Sea Guard aesthetic once painted.

Glad to see another fantasy square bases general!

You're elves are looking really good. The bases really make the colourful miniatures pop.

Any cavalry in the amassed backlog of elves you've got?

I thought the two most recent cavalry kits for the high elves where great, especially the dragon princes.

Post by: mould2k

Thanks!

Yeah I have 16 Silver helms in store and I am hoping to pick up 5 Dragon Princes soon too. Should be good!

Other than lots of Sea Guard, Reavers and swordsmasters from the 8th ed starter box, I have 20 archers, 2 tiranoc chariots, 1 white lion chariot, 20 white lions, 2 reaper bolt throwers and assorted HQs.

What I dont have is decent spearmen. The newer box seems to be rarer and the old monopose tend to be pretty poor condition in second hand sites.

Thanks gobert!

I'm definitely in the mood to paint more square based elves. Sadly the weather has not been supporting this so I wasn't able to prime any high elves in time to paint this weekend. I did however smash out a speed painted salamander:

Not my finest work but I was annoyed with it being finecast and so just wanted it painted so it could be used in battles (and out of my painting queue).

The weather did hold off for long enough to prime some Swordmasters and Bolt Thrower crew late yesterday afternoon, so they are next on the painting table. I'm interested to see how well the old metal bolt thrower crew fit in with the 8th edition Sea Guard and Swordmasters, I'm hoping once painted up in a consistent scheme/style they will fit in ok!

Thank you!

Not made as much progress as I would have liked until yesterday due to real life issues. Apparently having a 6 month old and a full time job didn't eat into enough of my hobby time, now we are looking to move house!

I have pretty much finished the six swordmasters I was working on above. Just need some static grass and then posed in the light box for decent photos.

After reading through the old Fantasy Heraldry book for High Elves, I've decided to have my army based in Cothique. So used a Sea Green on the helmet plumes and will go back and swap some of the blue to a similar colour on the sea guard later too.

Proper photos to follow!

A little bit more progress! Finished up an oldhammer bolt thrower and crew. I'm rather pleased that the older metal model doesn't look out of place next to the newer Sea Guard and Swordmasters. I do have one of the newer plastic bolt throwers as well as another metal one still to paint so hopefully they all look good together.

These guys did have their first battle last week as I took my High Elves for a 3000 point battle against Skaven using the 9th Age ruleset (which is now preferred to 8th Edition WHFB for my gaming group). Obviously I fielded a lot of grey plastic but thankfully my opponent was understanding that I wanted to give the new boys a spin.

Everything was going pretty well until my unit of Swordmasters underestimated the combat ability of a Skaven Warlord, and managed to lose combat against the unit of clan rats he was with (seriously, 16 attacks resulted in 6 dead clan rats). The Swordmasters promptly broke and fled, panicking a completely unscathed unit of White Lions despite them being in BSB range. Both units were promptly ran down by clan rats. Welp.

Next up, either more Swordmasters or an Eagle to hunt warmachines and be a general nuisance!

Thank you!

Took a break from painting High Elves to see if I could smash out a quick to paint scheme for Beastmen with a test Ungor. This is what I came up with:

I wanted him to look like a raider from a mountain tribe of Beastmen, so took a palette inspiration from mountain goats. The basing is meant to look like scree, not sure if it works!?

Overall I am happy, but I think it still took too long to do, probably 1hr30mins, which would mean a 30 man unit would take 60 hours. Welp. Might try another test one with contrast paints some day. See if that speeds it up.

Those elves look fantastic! The black and gold sheathes on the bolt thrower guys are a good little touch, it’s not often you see black on High Elves, but it works really well. The sea green will work well to tie them all together that’s for sure!

Hello,

Well despite the global crisis I have still been pretty busy with work and parenting. But I have managed a bit of time to expand f my unit of swordmasters!

I've not done as good a job on the standard as I would have liked. Thankfully I have 4 or 5 versions of that model so I can easily give it another attempt at a later date.

7 more swordmaster until it feels like a proper unit!

Thanks gobert!

As always, I have gotten distracted from Elves again!

I wanted to have a play with rusted metals and metallic blue, so started working on a Chaos Lord on Daemonic Mount, specifically the mount part!

This is what I ended up with. I'm not entirely happy with it but I learned a lot.
Pros: The rusted chain mail and metal spikes came out how I wanted them to, as did the pale rock/scree basing. The metallic blue was pretty easy to accomplish and should be replicable across larger units.
Cons: The scarring doesn't look particularly natural, and the placement of the rust patches on the blue also needs to be more selective. I think I will also try basing the blue with a brighter silver to get more of a pop. The model was finecast which continues to be a pain in the arse to deal with.

The lord himself next!

I am trying to resist temptation, at least until I have gotten the high elves up to a decent army size. I suspect I may give in and get myself a box of warriors to paint at some point. I am thinking Kairic Acolytes would work well as marauders on 25mm square bases...

Only a small update today, to say that I have rounded out my unit of swordmasters to a full unit of 20!

Next up, I am going to treat myself to painting the Prince on Griffon from the same Island of Blood box. Was feeling a bit apprehensive about it but after building it and priming it I think it should be a lot of fun to paint!

First up will be the back end of the griffon. WIP photos to follow.

I think it's the photos, it's the same as the one used on the swordmasters.

Making slow progress on the griffon wings. There are probably faster ways to do this (like drybrushing) but I like the effect and it should pop nicely when on the tabletop charging down units of skaven.

Yeah the wings did take rather a long time (about the same time as the rest of the model took), but I am happy with how it came out and think it should pop nicely when being played with in our rather dingy club!

Couldn't get the motivation to move to Eldar as I still don't have a scheme for my homebrew craftworld that I am 100% happy with. They're on hold for now.

So I am taking a break from Elves (while I wait for the basing materials for my griffon to come through the post) and have picked up some Chaos Warriors to accompany the Lord I painted earlier. Starting another new army? Umm, apparently so.

Nice, I’ve been tempted by the chaos warrior kit, not sure I’ll be able to resist if yours look good in metallic blue! Will they be getting nice new square bases?

But of course! Nothing against AoS of course, just that my gaming group is mostly Fantasy focused so square bases will get more use.

Enjoying these Chaos Warriors as a diversion from High Elves. Polar opposites in a lot of ways.

I've finished the rust on all the steel parts:

And started highlighting the armour:

Hey all.

I'm in a bit of a hobby rut at the moment. I have half started 3 or 4 units but not made any tangible progress on any of them so had nothing to share. But I did get my basing materials through from Spain so have finally got some decent pictures of the Prince on Griffon. Let me know what you think!

Prince on Griffon looks stunning. If I was to suggest one thing, there is something about the pennant and cloak that look a bit plain in comparison to the rest - I suspect it might take freehand to remedy though...

Mouldy's Miscellanea - Hive Fleets and High Elves @ 2020/04/30 09:12:58

Post by: mould2k

Yeah you're probably right.

I'm very inexperienced when it comes to freehand, and there is a fair amount of folding on the pennant and cloak that would make it a bit harder, so it's probably not something I want to try on this model!

I've got the plastic 30k heroes models ready to prime and will paint up in Sons of Horus colours, I think their cloaks would be suitable practice areas for some freehand eyes of Horus!

Thanks for the love all. Beginning to find my groove and knocking out some more Genestealer Cultists.

Hello

So as above, am taking a break from elves for now and getting back on the genestealer cult bandwagon. My gaming group are planning an apocalypse game when lockdown ends that will be nids and GSC vs Chaos and Dark Eldar. This has given me a fair amount of motivation to push on with more cultists. Rightly or wrongly I started off with a character I have been looking forward to painting a lot!

Next up, some more neophyte special weapons and then a Leman Russ.

She looks cool, good use of the orange. Will the Russ be orange and white too?

Mouldy's Miscellanea - Hive Fleets and High Elves @ 2020/05/10 10:10:30

Post by: mould2k

Nope! My brood brothers are blue and grey (same grey as on the cultists) with orange cult markings to show the true allegiance.

On that note, here's the Russ all finished. Sorry for not posting WIP pictures, work and baby taking up a lot of my free time. Glad to get this done as the camo was rather a pain. Now I will need to do it for all the BB tanks too

Orange is a great colour for GSC. It just works.

Mouldy's Miscellanea - Hive Fleets and High Elves @ 2020/05/10 14:20:52

Post by: gobert

Great job on the Russ, I can imagine the camo was a drag. Surely the joy of an asymmetric force like GSC is that each vehicle can be different? You could easily go with white, blue, grey or black, but a whole bunch of tanks in that camo would look super cool!

Mouldy's Miscellanea - Hive Fleets and High Elves @ 2020/05/10 17:10:01

That's true, they wouldn't all need the exact same camo scheme if i use the same colours... will have to decide when I get more tanks to paint!

I've tried to write this post 3 times now but for various reasons I've lost it the last 2 times, so here's the summarised version:

Painted the start of my acolyte bomb, 5 down, many more to go:

Also started some allied tyranids, probably not going to be a standalone force and probably big monster focused but both of those are subject to change! Here's the very early WIP:

Still plenty to work on for this guy, but happy with the progress so far.
More detailed thoughts about these maybe later!

Mouldy's Miscellanea - Hive Fleets and High Elves @ 2020/05/21 13:03:05

A bit more progress. I've blocked out most of the orange markings. Now to layer over them to brighten the orange up and probably chop back into them with black to diffuse the orange a bit more in other places. Black still needs highlighting.

Monsieur le Carnifex is complete!

A few lessons were learned with this:

1) Sub-assemblies would make big gribblies easier to paint
2) Skeleton horde is an easy base coat for the bone compared to 3 layers of Vallejo bone white
3) Orange is still only slightly easier than yellow
4) I can probably do this scheme on hordes of the small bugs with relative ease...

Next up is the swarmlord and his arms and head have been finished. I wish I hadn't glued the torso to the legs/tail as that would be easier to paint seperate but at least these bits were sub assemblies.

Thanks Kyoto!

Smashed out the swarmlord. I am enjoying how easy and satisfying this scheme is to paint. It's been described as Halloween themed which wasn't intentional but I have no problems with! Spooky bugs ahoy!

Next up, some detachment filling heavy weapons dudes. Then back to bugs I suspect.

Been a bit of a while since I last posted an update but I've still been painting away.

Some has just been models smashed out to a basic table top standard so not worth posting here, so no pictures of the Brood Brother heavy weapon team or a 10 man Eldar Guardian squad.

But i did more recently paint a couple of things that I am more happy with. The first being the two Chaos Marines from Blackstone Fortress:

I'm really happy with how the bases came out, it's an adaptation of the Midwinter Minis basing scheme. Pretty easy in the end.

I've also managed to finish a model that has sat in my drawer for well over a year unbuilt, Artel W's Warseer, back from before he got a cease and desist! Lovely model, incredibly detailed and rather a challenge for someone of my abilities, but I am happy with how it came out. A couple of WIP shots that I actually remembered to take:

And then the final thing:

The BSF marines came out great! So did the bases, what adaptation to the midwinter minis tutorial did you do? I like how bright you got them and incorporated the debris too.

The warserr is a great model and the colour palette works really well too.

Another week, another new project for this hobby butterfly. This time it's some gobbos!

Why gobbos? Well my better half has started painting models during lockdown cos she was getting a bit of cabin fever. She obviously picked the Daughters of Khaine so i decided some greenskins would make interesting opponents.

First up, squigs!

Then obviously they need a brave and noble leader to guide them into glorious combat!

Great fun models to paint. Will do the second 5 squigs as the boingrots I suspect.

3 half painted nid warriors to finish first though.

I've been fairly productive throughout lockdown in terms of painting output, well for me at least. But that painting has been rather unfocused and split over a number of projects. This has meant that I have made no discernable progress in any of my ongoing projects. To counter that, I am going to try to primarily focus on one large project at a time. No doubt I will have regular diversions because like a lot of hobbyists I have a butterfly brain, but if I can keep coming back to one project I think that will help but keep this thread and myself somewhat focused.

So I am going to look to focus my attentions on my burgeoning Cothique themed High Elf army for 9th Age. First things first, what I need to work out what I actually have in stock and how much has been painted:

Lords and Heroes:
Lord on Griffon 1/1
Battle standard bearer 0/1
Mages on foot 0/2
Caradryan 0/1
Mounted Mage 0/1
Sea Helm 0/1

Core:
Sea Guard Unit A 18/24(ish)
Sea Guard Unit B 0/24(ish)
Spearmen 0/20
Archers Unit A 0/20
Archers Unit B 0/21
Silver Helms 0/16
Reavers 0/10

Specials and Rares:
Swordmasters 20/28(ish)
White Lions 0/20
Chariots 0/2
White Lion Chariots 0/2
Dragon Princes 0/8
Bolt Throwers 1/3
Skycutter 0/1

I think that is everything and is a rather scary backlog. I am not quite sure how many Sea Guard and Swordmasters I have as I bought a fair few when they were cheaply available on eBay. Will need to dig them out the loft to check!

Well that's the easy part done, now to get them all painted!

Mouldy's Miscellanea - Hive Fleets and High Elves @ 2020/08/11 11:01:58

Post by: mould2k

So I forgot to post these but here are the 6 latest Sea Guard that took my unit to 18/24 painted, used more Cothique inspired Sea Green in this 6 than the previous 12 and am liking it. I will need to go back and change the original 12...eventually.

I've also fully catalogued my backlog of High Elves and *cough* added in the most recent purchases...

Lords and Heroes:
Lords on Griffons 1/2
Battle standard bearer 0/1
Mages on foot 0/2
Caradryan 0/1
Mounted Mage 0/1
Sea Helm 0/1

Core:
Sea Guard Unit A 18/24
Sea Guard Unit B 0/30
Spearmen 0/36
Archers Unit A 0/20
Archers Unit B 0/21
Silver Helms 0/16
Reavers 0/10

Specials and Rares:
Swordmasters 20/32
White Lions 0/20
Chariots 0/2
White Lion Chariots 0/2
Dragon Princes 0/13
Bolt Throwers 1/3
Skycutter 0/1
Eagles 0/2

Welp. Better get painting. I've started the last 6 of the first unit of Sea Guard and have primed 10 of the White Lions to start after that. Wish me luck!

I did also paint up 5 Boingrot Bounderz as they were half painted and means i now have no unpainted Gitz.

Will need to decide what to get next for these guys...after i have painted more elves that is!

Hi All,

Quick post to show last addition to the Shore Garrison of Cothque, the start of my unit of White Lions.

Fluff wise, I am envisaging these as Cothique Huntsmen who are the recipients of White Lion cloaks from Chrace after they aided in the blockade of Chracian ports by Vampire Coast pirates. Since I also have a couple of White Lion Chariots to paint, I think they will also have gifted a breeding pair of lions too. What is slightly less easy to explain will be Dragon Princes, so any suggestions are gratefully accepted!

Like a lot of hobbyists, my backlog (especially High Elves and Eldar) has gotten way out of hand. So I noticed the following system from JoeRugby on his (excellent) P&M blog.

I like this because it both gameifies clearing the backlog and also doesn't completely prevent new purchases (being realistic, I am going to buy things!) So I am going to give this a go starting with the last week's activities and purchases:

Starting points: 0
Purchases made: -30 (An Ork Trukk)
Progress made: 34 (5 White Lions, plus 10 Necron Warriors Built as well as the 9 models from Zarbag's Gitz)
Closing balance: 4 (a start is a start)

Mouldy's Miscellanea - Hive Fleets and High Elves @ 2020/09/03 16:06:07

Post by: mould2k

So a week later and I have completed another 5 White Lions (or Huntselves of Cothique as I am calling them). This time the command group have been included so they are beginning to look like a proper unit. I made a few errors on the banner that I am not 100% happy with but I don't really want to strip it and start again...

Next up will be the half finished 6 Sea Guard to bring that up to a unit of 24.

I've also changed the scoring/points system I lifted from JoeRugby so that it is slightly simpler and more aligned with my objectives. So, fully completing a model will award the following points (which are doubled if the model was bought less than a month before completion):

Standard infantry: 1 Point
Large Infantry/Beasts/Bikes etc: 2 Points
Small Monsters/Vehicles: 5 Points
Large Monsters/Vehicles: 7 Points

To purchase a new model costs the following:

Standard infantry: 3 Points
Large Infantry/Beasts/Bikes etc: 6 Points
Small Monsters/Vehicles: 15 Points
Large Monsters/Vehicles: 21 Points

Redoing my opening balance (being the purchase of the Ork Trukk - 21 points and the completion of 5 White Lions) starts me off at -16. Welp.

Starting points: -16
Purchases made: 0 (good boy)
Progress made: 5 (5 additional white lions)
Closing balance: -11

Not had the chance to take photos but I managed to finish off 6 more Sea Guard to get the unit of 24 done.

Also managed to get a game of 40k 9th Ed played for the first time this edition. 25pl crusade game, my GSC vs my mate's necrons. Took some pictures so will try to post a full report soon, but was a lot of fun and reignited the 40k enthusiasm.

That meant today we have planned another game, this time 2v2. My hive fleet Lusca Nids will be joined by 25 PL of gaunts to go up against 25PL each of death guard and alpha legion. Should be fun! Because of this, I needed to paint up 2 more genestealers to round out my unit from 8 to 10. So that leaves the scoreboard as follows:

Starting points: -11
Purchases: 0
Completed models: 8 (6 sea guard and 2 stealers)
Closing balance: -3

So I am getting close to breaking even...which is probably a good thing as I have a feeling I will want to expand my nids after todays game!

Been rather too busy to post any updates sadly, I wanted to do battle reports for both the battles as they were good fun if not tactical master classes but not had chance.

I have done a bit of painting however and smashed out a second ridgerunner. Great models and hopefully a unit of two works better than a single one! Will get a third eventually but probably won't go for the full 9!

And, since I bought this less than a month a go, I get double painting points, lucky me!

Starting points: -3
Purchases made: 0
Completed models: 10 (2 x 5 pts for the ridgerunner)
Closing balance: 7

Woohoo I am back in the black! Going to try to keep these good habits up so that I save up the points I need to buy the next purchase, which is currently either zoanthropes or raveners...

Thanks Gobert

So after buying the Indomitus set, I have been trying to decide on a chapter for the marines. I was going to go for a homebrew chapter but couldn't settle on a paint scheme i enjoyed. Instead, the number of chainswords made Flesh Tearers seem the appropriate choice. But could I paint them?

Not wanting to ruin the assault intercessors, I found 5 intercessors I had put together from another abandoned Kill Team project. These combine parts from the easy to build and multipart intercessor kits hence the variation in the shoulder pads. Also added in a powerfist from an Assault on Black Reach terminator to the sergeant. Here is the WIP so far, they've been rather fun to paint so far:

Mouldy's Miscellanea - Hive Fleets and High Elves @ 2020/09/25 19:06:15

Post by: mould2k

Cheers!

The red is less bright in real life. I have finished pretty much everything on the bodies now. Tidied up highlights and done the basing and weathered up the boots.

So just need to paint up the heads, backpacks and remaining shoulder pads, then do decals and weathering and they'll be done.

Mouldy's Miscellanea - Hive Fleets and High Elves @ 2020/10/22 14:01:32

Hiya,

So I have done all the painting on the Flesh Tearers intercessor squad. I am very happy with how these have turned out, but the chapter decals I got from chapter customizer were not as easy to use as I would have liked. I've used GW decals before with no problem so was expecting similar but these were too thick while the white was translucent. I think I am going to invest in some 3D printed chapter badges instead, but that will have to wait until RL has settled down.

So since I am moving house, I have the vast majority of my unpainted minis packed away which is restricting what I can paint. With that said, I found two unfinished Warriors of Chaos that I finished off in my metallic blue and rusted metal scheme:

The shields have photographed as a bit more flat and one coloured than i think they are in real life but hey ho.

I also managed to get done something I've been meaning to paint for a while, a White Lion Chariot for my Cothique High Elves army. This was an ebay rescue so it was a bit of a pain to paint assembled rather than the sub-assemblies I would have preferred, but I am still happy with how it came out even if it isn't perhaps as good as I could have made it.

That leaves me with the following tally:

Starting points: 7
Purchases made: 0
Completed models: 7 (2 x Chaos Warriors and 5pts for the Chariot)
Closing balance: 14

Nice job! The metal work on the lions is really cool, whilst they may have looked better if you had been able to paint in sub assemblies, they still look pretty good to me. The Chaos Warrior scheme is still really good, the blue and rust work great together. Is it just me though, or did you miss the Flesh Tearers off your tally? Or are you waiting for the printed icons first?

Good luck with the house move!

Mate what a feast this blog is! So much happening - and a really clever method of keeping yourself on track. I want to say I'm going to steal it - but I know I'd just end up lying to myself to cover up my -50 a month habit

The tyranid scheme is really gorgeous. Looks natural and terrifying; the lime green accents really pop and are a great choice.

I think the White Lions look ace too, both in the chariot and on foot, lovely blue steel.

I am also loving the work on the GSC; the skin on the magus is wonderful and the colours and weathering on the ridgerunner are really well executed.

Great work mate, looking forward to more!

Thanks tzurk! Appreciate you popping in.

My current haphazard progress of painting whatever has not been packed away continues with some more gobbos. I bought Zarbag's Gitz for Underworlds a couple of months ago as the models are great and I really enjoy the game. Hadn't got around to painting any of them but have now made a start. 2 down including Zarbag himself (couldn't resist!).

I especially love Zarbag's mad boss eye.

This was my first attempt at OSL ever so it's a bit messier than i would have liked, especially when it is this zoomed in! But I learned a lot and should be better placed to do this next time.

Plus, it takes my score up to 16

Hello all.

Not being posting for a couple but I am still here! After moving house at the start of November then entering busy season at work, I haven't had the chance to either paint or post as much as I would like.

I have done a little bit of painting these last two months however, finishing up the gang of Zarbag's Gitz for Warhammer Underworlds and working out a test scheme of Necrons for the Indomitus models:

The Necrons are far more weathered than they appear on the photo, it's not just brown + agrax, honest!

Sadly, my points took a battering however. Work stress leads me to resort to retail therapy and I ended up buying not only the Tyranids Battleforce, but also several High Elf and Tomb Kings boxes on eBay. So my points now look as follows:

Opening point balance: 16
Models completed: 12 (5 Necrons and 7 Gobbos)
Models purchased: -276 (Hive Tyrant (21pts), 3 x Tyrant Guard (18pts), Haruspex (21), 10 Gargoyles (30), 16 Genestealers (48). 12 Skeleton Warriors (36) and 3 Chariots (45). 16 High Elf Spears (48), 1 Mounted Noble (6) and 1 Foot Noble (3))
Closing balance: -248. feth.

But the good news is I managed to finish 156 models in 2020, easily the most I have ever painted in one calendar year. I guess a global pandemic is good for something!? Full list is as follows:

1 AT Warhound
2 Blackstone Fortress Chaos Marines
1 Chaos Warrior Lord + 6 Chaos Warriors
10 Eldar Guardians + 1 Weapon Platform + 1 Farseer
4 GSC neophytes + 1 Leman Russ + 1 Ridgerunner + 2 Weapons Teams + 5 acolytes + 1 Magus
1 Carnifex + 1 Swarmlord + 3 Tyranid Warriors + 2 Genestealers
1 Loonboss on Squig + 10 Squig hoppers + 9 Zarbag's Gitz
18 Sea Guard + 1 Prince on Griffin + 10 White Lions + 20 Swordmasters + 1 White Lion Chariot + 1 Handmaiden of Everqueen + 1 Bolt Thrower
1 Converted Magos Biologis
5 Skinks with Bows + 1 Skink Chief on Terradon + 23 Skinks with javelins
5 Necron Warriors

That's not a bad haul. The High Elves are the clear winners and I would definitely like to continue to expand those into a proper army. So what are my hobby resolutions for 2021? I am aiming to:

- High Elves - Finish the unit of White Lions, Unit of 15 Silver Helms, Unit of 30 Spearmen, another Bolt Thrower, Battle Standard Bearer, Lothern Skycutter
- Tomb Kings - Finish a 2,500 force for 9th Age, list to be decided!
- Eldar - Get a 1k force of CWE finished
- Finish Painting the Indomitus models
- Finish Painting Blackstone Fortress

Will I do any of these? Well, we shall see!

Cheers guys!

Made a good start to 2021 by continuing with my Cothique High Elves, as I have now finished my unit of 20 White Lions. I got asked on Reddit why a Cothique army would include Chracian White Lions. My personal head canon is that these are Huntsmen of Cothique who were gifted the pelts after saving a Chracian merchant vessel from Druchii pirates. Although, given the proximity between Chrace and Cothique, the simpler answer would be trade!

Anyway, here are the last ten White Lions:

And the unit as a whole:

Eventually I would like to get this up to the maximum size (for 9th Age) of 30 but finding the plastic models is proving tricky. Next up is going to be some Silver Helms!

Cheers all!

I've made a start on the next unit, the Silver Helms. I am hoping to get 5 of these done before the end of the month if possible.

I've painted the riders and their mounts separately, the knights have been base coated and shaded so just need relayering and given that little bit of polish! I couldn't resist finishing one of them and posing him on a primed horse to see how they would look:

Should look good once the whole rank is sorted! Now back to the other guys.

While I was waiting for the primer on the Silver Helms to dry, I did quickly splash some paint on a Battle Sister I had lying about. The new sculpts are simply fantastic and I had to give one a go, I went for a nice rich burgundy and pale cream combo and I am really happy with how it looks and how fast it was to paint! I think February may end up being a 40k month as a break from the Cothique bois and so I will finish up this young lady and her friends in the coming weeks. For now, here's the model missing a couple of vital parts...

Ooh! Silver Helms, the first chap already looks great. I look forward to seeing him with his mates.

The burgundy Sister looks fantastic, a great colour, and even better if it’s quick to paint

Thanks as always Gobert!

Really quick update today to show that the first rank of the Silver Helms is done! I even took a couple more WIP shots this time.

I think I am going to take a bit of a break from High Elves for February, so will probably smash out some half completed 40k units!

Well I finally got around to adding the decals to the Flesh Tearers Intercessors squad that I nearly completed last year, so they are now done!

Shooty marines aren't very flesh tearer-y so next up will be something with chainswords of course! But first to finish off my half finished 40k units/minis...

I've played a few practice games with some Flesh Tearers, and I gotta say that Flesh Tearers make even shooty marines nothing to sneeze at in close combat, especially at T3 and after.
They look great!

Did you end up using the Chapter Customizer decals?

Mouldy's Miscellanea - Hive Fleets and High Elves @ 2021/02/02 14:19:16

The squad markings on the knee are chapter customizer, the battle line arrows are GW and the buzzsaws are 3d printed. I may have another go with the chapter customizer buzzsaw decals on the next squad because I don't like how raised the 3d logo is.

Thanks for commenting! And good to know these guys will still be able to rip and tear!

Thanks all

So February I am taking a bit of a break from High Elves before I get back into the Asur groove in March. I've been doing pretty well clearing off a few things that have sat on my painting desk for far too long.

With that in mind, I followed up the Intercessor squad with a Sisters of Battle Dominions squad:

The downside is these were a joy to paint so likely going to be getting more lol

I also finished off a half painted Sons of Horus Praetor for my never-going-to-happen HH army! Excuse the slightly dodgy freehand on the cloak.

Now I am currently working on an Eldar Vyper. This is a rescue job on a big batch lot I got from a friend (I got a load of infantry and 6 tanks for £50), so was in pretty bad nick when I took hold of it. I would have loved to have painted this in sub assemblies but sadly the whole thing was built when I got it. I managed to prise the canopy off but the rest is being painted in one bit. Very WIP at this stage lol.

Came to have a look at your Cothique high elves but hell, everything on here is amazing. Really like that teal you used for them.

I saw up above someone asked why a Cothiqui army would have white lions? Well they are neighbouring provinces and units like that do get about. For my Chracian army I'm planning on converting up some of my old spearmen into Cothiqui raiders to count as Lothern Seaguard.

Also my personal favourite by far is that orange you used for the genestealer cult lady doodad! It's such a beautiful colour and really makes the model look exciting.

Absolutely love the variety of cool minis on display here. Your High Elves look fantastic.
What colour are you using for the teal plumes? I love it.

Mouldy's Miscellanea - Hive Fleets and High Elves @ 2021/02/16 10:13:08

Thanks guys!

@Da Boss - the teal plumes are sybarite green, shaded with coelia greenshade, then relayered with sybarite and finally extreme edge highlighted with Vallejo Green Sky (used to use nurgling green but i am gradually replacing all my citadel paints with other brands, primarily vallejo).

Quick update today, have been continuing to finish things that have sat primed in my desk for a while awaiting some paint. First up is the finished vyper in jade green:

I still need to come up with a name for this craftworld...

Next I finished the other half of the 10 necron warriors. These are largely a different style of painting for me, usually I stick with the traditional base - shade - layer - highlight. But there is no layering or highlights on this. Simply a bunch of different weathering paints over the base colours. The photos don't really do them justice however. Ah well!

Thanks gobert!

So I tried to paint some more High Elves, but I just can't find the motivation to crack on with them. Don't know why, but it just isn't there!

Thankfully I have more than enough other models to paint so I decided to paint something that has been in my backlog for a while...some Tomb Kings!

So here is my first few models, the ubiquitous skeleton warriors. A real welcome break from the intricate High Elf models.

I do have plenty more TK models to paint, some GW and some 3rd party but I wasn't going to start with this army project until I had materially finished the High Elves. So this may be the only TKs I paint for a while, we shall see!

Next...I am not sure. I am still not feeling the finishing off the Silver Helms unit. However, my gaming group is discussing a silly apocalypse 40k game when lockdown hopefully ends, so i may be looking to expand my Cult of Lusca or the Star Gods themselves...

Great skellybobs mouldy! The bones are nicely done, are they layered or just dry brushes?

Mouldy's Miscellanea - Hive Fleets and High Elves @ 2021/03/10 22:13:31

Actually just drybrushed! I wanted something fast on the assumption that I would need to be painting a lot of bones.

Hello!

Another update, and another Tomb King. This time a Lich Priest to keep the skelly boys upright.

I wasn't quite sure how to paint the mummified flesh. In reality, mummies are typically an almost black brown, but that felt like it would look odd despite being realistic and I want the constructs to be more that tone. Therefore I went for a more zombified grey-green. Might be a bit unrealistic but looks more fitting somehow. I love his poor skelly footrest.

And then as I alluded to in an earlier post, I will be swinging the attention of the thread back towards the alliance of Genestealer cult, Brood Brothers and Tyranids that I colloquially call Lusca and Friends (I really need a better name for all this). With lockdowns hopefully coming to an end in a couple of months, we are planning a large Apocalypse game so I am looking to get my forces expanded so that I can bring a suitable retinue of the Sons of Lusca, their Brood Brothers and the Star Gods themselves, Hive Fleet Lusca.

With that in mind, I smashed out an Armoured Sentinel for the cult. This was really fun to paint and reasonably quick too, sadly I don't have any more BB vehicles to paint but I suspect this will get expanded to a full unit of 3.

Hey mate,

lovely coppers on the skellies! I'm a big fan of the grey skintone on the liche as a point of difference to the boneheads and the teal is of course a nice touch of contrast all round.

Sentinel is nice and clean with a great camo scheme too, and the bases are fantastic - really help to pull the minis together.

Keep it up, you'll be in the green in no time!

So I can feel the urge to paint more High Elves returning! This is good as I really want to get that army playable as soon as possible, without compromising paint quality too much. So, for now, this thread and my painting efforts will focus on two projects: The Lusca Alliance (Hive Fleet Lusca, Sons of Lusca GSC and their devoted Brood Brothers) and the High Elves of Cothique. I'll probably loosely alternate between these two projects, so apologies if one or the other is not of interest.

First up then?

Some fire support for the Hive Fleet:

And then I will be finishing off 5 more GSC Neophytes that have been hanging around for too long.

Thanks all, much appreciated. The carapace is really simple but I do like the effect it creates!

As mentioned in my last post, I finished off 5 more neophytes for the cult:

This now takes me to 3 units of autogun+specials neophytes. Not quite up to bladed cog levels yet but I am getting there. Here are all 3 units, two with mining lasers and grenade launchers and 1 with seismic cannons and webbers.

As for what to paint next, I'm really not sure! More tyranids? Back to Silver Helms? Some Dire Avengers that have been primed for a while?? We shall see.

Thanks Gwyn!

Right, so while the PVA on the base and primer on the Exocrine dries, I started a project of "restoring" an extremely unloved chimera that was donated to me.

This thing has been badly mistreated, it is covered in pools of dried plastic glue and had been simply built wrong. Here's a view of the top showing the state of it:

First thing I had to do was remove the side tracks and the rear hatch. The sides had been glued on the wrong sides of the chassis, and the hatch and rear undercarriage glued on at an angle to bodge it together and cover any resulting holes. So I had to prize the whole thing apart:

Additionally the heavy flamer on the front was not set into its hole properly due to bits of sprue left on the edges (the whole model is covered in remains of the sprue, I removed as much as I could). This was pulled off, cleaned up and reattached. The two halves of the flamer are not quite aligned but sadly fixing that is beyond my abilties.

Then, as you can see from the photos above, the turret is glued 90degrees round. Sadly this couldn't be pulled apart like a lot of the other joins, so I had to pull out the hacksaw.

Finally, there was the relatively simple job of gluing it back together the right way round!

It's far from perfect, the chassis has been bent and glued together in a not quite right way, so it is a bit uneven and there are a couple of gaps that I need to fill. The one upside is this is going to be a cult chimera, and so I should be able to hide the majority of the damage with weathering: ample rust and weld patches will be included! I can get away with it looking like it has had a bunch of field repairs! A new heavy flamer for the turret is in the post to make sure it is usable on the table.

I'll get the side with white paint splodged on stripped, then gaps will be filled and a coat of primer to see how it looks. I'm hoping it will fit right in with my small brood brothers vehicle contingent.

That was one badly built chimera! You seem to have recovered it pretty well, though no doubt the primer will reveal a few more of the previous owners sins. As for the flamer, I wonder if you could file it in to a rounder shape? It is quite an offset so you might want to fill the barrels with milliput or similar? As a cult vehicle it’ll look great a bit beaten up

Really good idea gobert. I hadn't thought about filling it and reshaping it, you're right though that it is horribly aligned. I'll order something to fill it up.

Exocrine looks cool, he’s a big old lad by the looks of it.

If you’re ordering stuff for the filling, be warned that Green Stuff doesn’t drill too well. Milliput seems better in that department but is much messier!
