Welcome all to the 87th round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favorite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds.

This month, the theme is Mayhem: While some lose their heads in the carnage and chaos of battle, others revel in it, and in the mayhem they can wreak there. From wild berserkers to mad Orks, your entry should feature models who are capable of causing sheer, unbridled chaos and mayhem on the battlefield.


How To Enter

- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.


So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.

These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.


How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of May and will end at midnight BST on 31st May. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

Not sure if I’m just going to do some genestealers (there are 4 more on my desk being built that could join them for a do 10, pick 5 situation) or swap one out and do either a ‘Fex and friends, or another GSC with backup.

Or I might change my mind and do some Eldar rangers. I’ve not had my coffee yet, so can barely functions, let alone decide things.

I picked up Beastgrave -

Here's my entry for Mayhem, a group of armed close combat knights. Sword Brethren.

However, I am open to amending this to be the models behind my sword brethren and get the Close Combat Centurions painted up from 2 years ago

Which one feels more like they'll ensure a chaotic result on the table?

Going to try to get this gnoll squad of random reaper canids painted up:

Vejut, you have a lot of faith in my ability to speed paint. Unfortunately I tend to zoom way in on models (not that it improves my skill) but usually takes a while. But with your faith, I'll see if I can knock out both.

Had to think really hard for this one in the end. Ultimately I decided to paint something from Ankh: Gods of Egypt. Here is a proof pic of Set, god of chaos and war in Egyptian mythology:

This will really be something different from all the power armor and stuff I usually paint. My main goal is to get the god himself painted; if I have time I'll paint up his warriors as well (and choose the best four to enter with him in the final pics).

I've been meaning to give painting a 75mm model a try for a while, so this is my entry. Also, after painting Darth Vader last month I really want to paint something more colorful again.

I will enter Captain Tycho, from his utter hatred of the orks mayhem ensures his downfall.
I will get pictures after work.

I will be painting him when he was at his greatest.

Might see if I can fit a classic noisy boi or 2 in amongst my other projects for this theme.

Hmmm, trying to figure out what to enter. I keep going back & forth between a sci-fi terrorist type or the Ifrit that I need to kitbash.

The Kovoss Kryptics are weird, Frankenstein hybrids, perfect for causing mayhem on the Dreadball pitch. I'll be painting the whole team, and entering the best five in the challenge.

It's been a long time since I did one of these comps. I recently finished a modelling project converting eldar wraithlords into aspect wraithlords, so I thought I might as well try entering one as I'll be painting them for the next year, probably! Top pic is all the completed aspect wraithlords (from right to left: dark reaper, dire avenger, howling banshee, swooping hawk, fire dragon, striking scorpion), plus an extra two vanilla wraithlords, one modified one unmodified which I'll probably also paint to enter at some point in the future (if I haven't gone crazy by then!).

Since the comp theme is mayhem, I guess I'll go for the Howling Banshee wraithlord (2nd pic), which is appropriate as it was the first one completed. I'm intending to paint all of them in a mixture of craftworld colours and traditional aspect colours, so to that end the banshee will be part banshee colours (bone and green, plus red hair) and part Iybraesil colours (deep blue + white). Hopefully I'll be able to balance all those colours okay... If not, I guess it'll be an 'interesting' look, if nothing else...

I found a lonely kitty at a local store. Whoever owned him before didn't treat him well so I rescued him, thinking maybe it'll be good for this months thingamabob. Mom said I could keep it (I'm mom)

I might end up having to change my entry if the weather around here doesn't cooperate more. It's either wind or rain or both 24/7 lately, which makes spray priming impossible. I could always brush prime, but I tend to do that only on smaller models.

I hope the end result comes out as well as the image in my head.

You should try MolotoW for primer if you're having trouble. I use it by brush and airbrush and as it's an ink, it doesn't build up easily or obscure detail.

The Ohmu might look cute and cuddly, but they can cause mayhem when roused to anger.

Oh VERY nice! Is that the baby one from the end of the film?

Yes it is, though I won't be modelling it impaled by bits of metal. Per the instructions, in order to attach the metal bits you have to drill holes in the ohmu's body to create "realistic damage" (!), and I don't have a large enough drill bit.

Plus, you REALLY don’t want to annoy the other Ohmu…

My proof pic. These Palladium Valkyries are a bear to assemble! I tried some Mr. Dissolved Putty to fill in some of the seams.

I'll be entering a LT for this month. Had painting on my brain all day at work and just sat down for it in one go after dinner.

Had some other options, but to get the Necromunda train started, I'll paint up my first gang minis. If those lads and gals don't bring Mayhem, I don't know who does.

So, ten days into May I'm not feeling my entry at all. I may have to go find something else to paint instead.

Didn't really feel the "Mayhem" from my Space Marines, so I'll be going for something very different this month.

I found a box with a couple old Beastmen, and this one basically screamed "Mayhem" at me:





An old metal Centigor, might even be Ghorros Warhoof himself (?).

If I paint anything this month it’ll be this fella.

Another of my home-grown putty critters. This Beaver has plastic Black Orc arms, so about as “mayhem” as a beaver gets I suppose. Certainly more mayhem than anything else I have to hand.

First bunch are done, waiting to be based. Proof pic for the second half (well, 2/5th) of the squad that I finished building and priming. Best 5 will be chosen.

I settled on Hela as my May(hem) entry. I don't know the comics but in the movie she sure was capable of messing people up good.

I'll have to get a bit of work done on the base before I start painting her so the swirly crap doesn't just come out of nowhere.

I think this is better and ready for some paint.

Painted Typhus that I picked up as a rescue at a local LGS. Haven't been out to an LGS in years and it felt great to return. Used oils and acrylics this time. Wanted to try some more chaotic bright colors on a plague marine and I feel kinda happy about it. Definitely not within my normal style of painting... I'm usually not one to do grimdark and gross minis so it was a fun time to test and learn and push myself.

Puppies=mayhem. Sounds like you need to find a good doggo mini and paint it to match your new friend.

It crossed my mind, but I haven’t found a decent Bernese model to print

Finished. Nothing fancy here, but getting more of the Pile of Shame ready for battle. These guys have hands, rather then talons like the last batch. Should help keep the broods apart on the table if they go after the same meal. Running low on bugs, probably time to buy some more...

Josh, is it the paintjobs you're not enamored with or the sculpts themselves?

I think you did a great job with the paint, but I'm not a huge fan of all the sculpts. The beefier ones look much better than weedier ones.

Everything is green!

I finished Hela and in the process found out that I only have a single normal green paint in my collection. That would have been good to know ahead of time...

Finished up my Sword Brothers! With time to spare... lets pretend I'm actually going to work on something else

There are parts that I feel are still left undone and probably could have planned the shields better to tie together, but perfection leads to nothing being accomplished. However, comments and criticism welcome!

All images not in spoiler submitted for judging.

Our Knights Templar carry a diverse array of weaponry. They stand ready to unleash death upon the enemies of the Emperor.


Each one bears the shield of the campaign they earned their way into the Marshal's household on their cloak. Their backpack tells of an oath of brotherhood will fellow Astartes.


Their tilt shields bear memory to a current quest



Their shin plate shares the story of a great feat performed as a Sword Brother of the Marshal

I finally found time to get stuck in to the Ohmu kit. So many legs!


But with the snout done the rest of the kit is quite simple, and should come together quickly.

Hi All

I've been away with work a lot this month (and still am away until tomorrow) I took my paints with me so I could paint in the Hotel rooms.

Realised I hadn't posted a proof yet so here it is, finished model photos will be up tomorrow night when I get back home.

Nothing says Mayham to me like having a mad snotling appear inside someone

Mek Operators of Shokk Attack Guns gather Snotlings, who are brainless enough to serve as its ammo. They are fired out of the gun, driven out of their tiny minds in the process. This has the effect of terrifying the Snotlings, making them exit the portal in a frenzy, ripping and tearing at anything they encounter as they leave the portal. This is effective because the Mek often tries to aim the gun directly on top of enemy soldiery, and they emerge inside living creatures

Proof

I honestly have no idea why, I've just been hit with such a massive painters block (for miniatures) the past few weeks, it's just a struggle to want to paint anything 28mm or 40mm scale. Got a model done, but not entirely happy with it (and for whatever reason, I'm struggling to get decent photos of him, but c'est la vie). Maybe next month will be better.

My entry this month is the king of chaos and mayhem (on the Marvel side), the Goblin himself.

Looks good to me.

A lot of great entries, mine falls under the heading of last minute painting to avoid a gap in the competition calendar and sadly he won't be getting a better photoshoot..

Meet Callahan, Biker, Baker and Underhive Troublemaker. Not happy with the face. Tried out the Speedpaints, but either didn't shake well enough or it's supposed to be this thin. And after seeing the closeups its clear, I painted some hair as skin... ah well.

Edit: Redid the face a bit, but could only be buggered for one new pic, the couch beckons...

So I haven't got near to my originally intended banshee wraithlord entry due to work blowing up on me, so I've pivoted to doing an actual banshee (exarch) and I've been feverishly trying to get her finished for the past few days. I'm painting gems and basing atm, but I'm probably not going to get photos done tonight. Hope it's okay to take photos tomorrow and post then?

Finally got my photos done, so here's my entry. Did it in a rush and the photos aren't great quality, but there it is. I also had a snapped spear to contend with which I didn't do a great job of fixing, but hey, at least she's finished and can join my kill team.

I always give out lots of votes. Sometimes I vote for everyone (except myself, of course), since every single entry is almost always awesome.

Hey Para, any idea when the vote will be up? I'm not asking to put pressure on you, I'm just wondering if if it's possible I can swap my entry photo out. The photos I took have completely washed out all the colours on the gemstones and flattened all the highlighting/shading. And to be honest, they're unexpectedly grainy, too. I'm really not very happy with them. I'd like to retake the pics in better lighting conditions if possible?

Don't worry if not. I'm going to retake the pics anyway, just for my own sanity.
