Starting this thread for Mantic's Firefight. I've ordered some kits and the starter. A group from our
local LGS is interested. I intend to do some demos, and I already know my son wants to give it a go.
Let's discuss our experiences, thoughts, and share pics about this game here.

my Starter Set is still "on the way" and I just hope the store I ordered from did not mess his stocks up (the stand alone rulebook is already listed as sold out there)
My plan for now is to use some old, still on sprue resin minis from Raging Heroes from their 2nd Kickstarter for the first army (along with the Marauders from the Starter as opponent), simply to show what is possible with the game/force lists and that people don't have to think narrowly when they try to get into it or want to use existing armies

That's a cool idea about the demonstration of system flexibility.
I'm nervous about my starter too --- it is still in pre-order status.

Painted up a couple of boxes of Stargrave troopers as a GCPS force, and my Dreamforge Eisenkern will do as Enforcers (although I have enough Cadians to proxy my proxies...) plus enough vehicles and walkers to fill out both armies. Can do something similar with Asterians and Eldar, and my Space Marines can do double duty as Forge Fathers. Looking forward to this, as I'm trying the game out with friends, along with Grimdark Future.
Been reading through the rulebook, everything seems clearly explained. One thing for you @kodos or anyone else who participated in the beta:
The terrain placement guidelines on page 48 of the rules say you should use 1 piece of 6" by 6" terrain in each 12" square of the gameboard, plus 1 extra. Same for linear obstacles.
On a 4ft by 4 ft board, that's 17 pieces of terrain and the same for obstacles. Which is a lot. The example in the next paragraph the example given is 5 pieces of terrain and 5 linear obstacles on a 4ft by 4ft board. Should the rules say one terrain piece in each 24" square?

Got my starter set, rules seem pretty clear, but yes, same question as above.
I miss having a little bit of fluff for each different unit, but I realize these are more gaming books than fluff books, which is fine.

Sounds like what they mean is that 25% of the board should be covered in terrain. I'd guess most pieces of terrain are bigger than 6x6 inches.

Terrain rules are the one thing that changed most from the beta, (and I am a metric guy)
but I think it should be one large terrain piece per 24"/60cm (or one Deadzone board) as this is also what they used in the promo videos
also it was said that you can use the terrain from Deadzone for Firefight, not just the same model line but the amount you would use on 60x60 for Deadzone spread out on 120x120 for Firefight
Automatically Appended Next Post: PS:
My plan for the Raging Heroes models:
Faction: Asterians, 1000 points
Overseer [Command] Points: 100
1 x Overseer
1 x Drone (Shuuvatar)
Kalyshi Deathstrike [Command] Points: 40
1 x Kalyshi Deathstrike
Black Talons [Specialist] Points: 180 (360)
5 x Black Talons
2x Kalyshi [Troop] Points: 90 (180)
5 x Kalyshi
2x Cyphers [Troop] Points: 160 (320)
4 x Cyphers
1 x Cyphers (Fission Beamer)
elite/low model force, everything non-living gets helmets as remote controlled drones, which fits the skinny armoured design of the models

Enforcer Pathfindern and Forge Fathers Steel Warriors are around the web, the other Enforcer units and Marauders are in the 2 Player Set.
need to scan those when my box arrives and make a collection of available instructions, the only ones really missing are Veer-Myn and Plague

Getting my army box assembled; this is a Maccrage blue over black primer.

I’m still assembling the models. Hope to play a learning game sometime this weekend. Anyone else playing any games recently? Any other thoughts about the rules overall?
Been following the FB group and it seems like mostly positive impressions of the gameplay (though it’s obviously a bit biased).
Also, is anyone in a gaming group that is planning on spending their money for the new 30K box instead of Firefight? It seems the timing of this release was a bit unfortunate (though Firefight looks much more fun to play than 30K).

I'm in a similar place -- thankfully my Enforcers have hit the painting stage! I have a game lined up after I get back in town.
A Facebook group helped me locate another player neraby, who has three Firefight armies in progress and is experienced with the system.
Facebook is excellent for finding opponents. As for the "Firefight Fanatics" Group, they may be biased, but the members seems to have a lot of positive experiences
to back up their enthusiasm.
One could say the timing with 30K is not ideal, but GW is pumping out a lot of product, so I'm not sure what other time to launch would be any better.
Had they waited until right after Horus Heresy, that could of been unfortunate.
I was very conflicted about Firefight vs. Horus. It is easy to get swept up in the enthusiasm, but I've decided to play Firefight and give it a real go before buying anything for 30K. I get the impression I will not be picking up Heresy at all -- although the lore is excellent and the models absolutely amazing.
game-play really needs to take precedence for me this time.
I want a new Sci Fi game table-top experience my life, and I simply love what I am seeing about Firefight's rules. I was never a fan of 7th Edition 40K, and it is not easy to
put lipstick on a pig.

I'm with Shrapnelsmile, and a bit over putting all that lipstick on the various pigs of the past few years. I got pretty excited about GW models 10+ years ago (I was a grenadier kid, and never much got into GW as a youngster), but game after game has just been... crappy.
So now I shamelessly play Mantic games with my beautiful GW models. And increasingly, the models have become a nice mix of GW, Mantic, and the odd figure from some other model range.
I play with a bunch of friends, and we also can't be bothered to play crappy rules. Still haven't gotten my copy of Firefight rules, but am looking forward to trying it out someday.

Thank you both so much. Yes these are much more pleasant to paint.
I'm not stressing about making "mistakes" when a unit of five doesn't cost $49.
I need to add something to the bases, may even switch to a different recipe I found, and modify these to match as best as I can.
Stay tuned for the update in a few weeks.

Ordered the two players starter, mainly for use in grim dark future. Later when I was comparing that box to the $100 army deals, I noticed the two players option doesn’t include any leaders.
Is FF playable without a leader?
22619
Post by: inmygravenimage
2 player starter as in the Firefight Boxset? Absolutely comes with leaders. It's just in the build/loadout. I built 2 different Enforcer leaders, and iirc you can build a Marauder Ripper commander also.
96506
Post by: Momotaro
1) Yes it is. You get 3 black command dice even without a leader. There are 2 generic commands, and 3 faction-specific commands.
You'll miss out on the extra dice from leaders (fewer command points, more likely to lose the first-round initiative roll) and each leader's unique command. It's not huge.
I think technically your force org needs one leader, but to start off you can ignore that.
2) The Rippers and Peacekeepers deploy in units of 2+ models, so it's easy to make one of the figures a commander.
The Commandos and Enforcers are in units of 5+, so it's also easy to name one figure as a commander and give them a bodyguard or two and field the rest in stronger units, or specialist units such as engineers (3 figures).
5513
Post by: privateer4hire
Thanks for the replies. I meant that the force boxes (one faction of guys usually with a vehicle and a special often resin leader type) have a dedicated leader figure included. The two players box with orcs and enforcers doesn’t have dedicated leaders included
Fortunately, as you pointed out, you can build one from a regular squad and redistribute the remaining guys as either bodyguards or extra bodies in the other squads

In answer to my question about leaders and the two players starter, there’s a couple sample force lists. They tell you to use an included model as the leaders.
On another note:
-Absolutely love the enforcer accuser aircraft. Excellent model that went together so easily. Built and painted it the day after receiving.
-Enforcer infantry are fiddly as hell. Holy moly, their peacekeepers are a royal pain to assemble.

The one on the left has the replacement fin that I built from plasticard. Very pleased.
And indeed, more Enforcer, more glow.
Resin direct order Captain with claws. Only way to get this cc tank. I've got some Tartarus termie claws so I can build a full unit, as there's no other official sculpt for them.
Wee group shot.
I've got 2 pathfinder monocycles left to do and then onto kitbash the clawed Peacekeeper team, plus I'm partway through a Tunnel Runnel (monowheel of death) for my Veer-Myn - that, at least, should be finished this month, though I'm not going to stress.

Ok just now finding this after getting back into my Mantic models and starting to get a bit of paint on.
I’m contemplating getting the Firefight book, and Deadzone, as both have changed editions since I last had the rules etc.
Is there an army builder app/website that has current points totals etc if I am to plug in what I currently have to see what I’m working with?
I’m not sure whether the sizes I have would really work.
Secondly, tactically, how would any factions play without really having vehicles? I’ve got lots of troops from the warpath KS. But I sold off or repurposed the vehicles.
Most I have are a couple of weapons platforms for Veermyn and Forge Fathers.
Plenty of big hitters for Plague models wise though potentially.

Post by: Danny76
I thought they did a free one way back but when I went to the Mantic army builder site yesterday I could only see all this subscription stuff. Maybe I missed the free portion.
I used to use Quartermaster and Battlescribe for stuff. If they’re still on the go and still used for Mantic I could look at those if not.
Yeah vehicles I’d rather not delve back in with, at least until I know whether I want to really go all out or not.
See where the points take me first etc.

the Mantic Army Builder is still free, you just need an account which is independent from the subscription

No, but I'm not a patient person, and shipping times are blech.
Someone else actually provided the info I needed, though.

Command dice are D6 and there is a chart as those are the same as the Vanguard Power Dice or Hellboy dice (Red=Black, White=Orange and Blue=Green)

(I made some out of blank D6 and different coloured markers)

Got a bunch of deadzone terrain painted. I've done them without gluing anything to maintain modularity, and it was annoying to get together as when painted, but I'm happy enough with the outcome! Might do a bit of touching up here and there where the wash dried unevenly is all.
I've gotten this not only to play Deadzone but also to use as terrain to go with my Battle For Cabot set, which I am going to tackle next. The box gave me real 2e 40K vibes and I chose it based on nostalgia, but the thing it's missing that that 2e box had was scenery. So I got a terrain crate of ruins and the Deadzone box to populate at least a small board with a battlefield 12 year old me would have been blown away by.

Making good progress with my Orks, they make excellent Blood Axe boyz. Have knocked together some 1000 and 1500 point lists for Marauders, Forge Fathers and GCPS and I'll do one for Plague as well.
I've been big on making cards for my games of Grimdark Future to help total newbies process their units, it's cool that mantic's app outputs a nice summary of every unit onto a list so I can print it out for my opponent. I might do a laminated sheet of the relevant special rules as well. Probably be a while before I can play any games but I plan on doing some solo games to teach myself the rules anyway.

Just a couple of shots of my finished marauders. Not winning any prizes for sure but I'm happy with them. The scheme is very similar to my Imperial Guard scheme because they're Blood Axes so they might have allied with the Guard and gotten surplus from them, or traded perhaps. I like the Marauder models but the background isn't as good as 40K's space Ork background imo.

Group shot of all of my Demiurg Infantry. I've since finished a tank and a couple of walkers and their little self propelled gun thingy.
Close up of my infantry. I converted some of the steel warriors into jump infantry using bitz from the Hammerfall Exo Suit unit. I dislike how chunky that upgrade makes the exo suits, but the backpacks fit really well on my Steel Warriors. Mantic accidentally sent me both of these units so I felt fine taking risks with them. In Firefight I might use these guys as Thoragrim but more likely I just won't use them, saving them for Grimdark Future and Xenos Rampant.
A close up on my Exo-Suits. I ended up with 18 of these despite only ordering 6, but no worries about that! You might notice one of them has a squid head - there's a couple of these scattered amongst my Steel Warriors too. I got them from I think the North Star Mercenaries sprue. I don't like how human-like the Forge Fathers are and I'm planning to also use them as Demiurg for 40K, so I decided the beard motifs might just as easily be stylised tentacles and decided my Demiurg would have chin tentacles. I imagine them living on gas giants on floating earthbergs, and having to mine for speciifc minerals to expand their territory as densities and material properties are very important for maintaining their cloud cities.
I have a bunch of Brokkrs and some militia that I got sent by accident or in a Crazy Box. I'm going to paint them up as well, so that I can use them in Firefight and Deadzone. I'll just leave out the squid headed lads in those games and use them as by the book Forge Fathers. I suppose it also means I can field a fairly large traditional Squat army, though I prefer my space dwarves as proper aliens these days.
Veer-myn (for 40K themed games, Hrudd) are up next. I still have some Matsudan (Slann) to assemble (and I could do with a Mech for that force as well, maybe a grav tank) and I want to do a bit of work on my Plague to make them look a bit nicer with some greenstuff before I assemble them. I'll be keeping my eye out for any hard plastic Rebs that Mantic might release but otherwise I think I'm happy with what I have.

Cheers! The matsudan are actually what I'm the most excited about (barring the Forge Fathers).
I wanted a cool looking reptilian sci fi race and they really fit the bill. I was delighted to find out they'd been fleshed out into full faction status, with cool looking mechs and jetbikes.
Unfortunately the Jetbikes are only available in a box with the ronin in Germany which is annoying because I'd like 3 jetbikes but only 1 ronin! But I'll order a mech or two before the end of the year.
