This thread will contain my latest IG projects which will include Troopers and Tanks. I have a couple of projects that have already commenced and they will be added to my existing IG Army. First though a bit of background to my Army.
Colonel Mathew Monash Jacka
Orphan Brigade
Colonel Jacka’s early career was filled with the normal regimental and routine jobs that any young Subaltern must perform. His career did not really kick of until some 17 years ago when as a Company Commander in the 12th Cadian Mech Regt (The Red Lions) he deployed to the Squat Home Worlds to help fight the invading ‘Nids’. The 12th fought there for thirteen years until the destruction of the Home World’s. Colonel Jacka commanded the 12th Cadian Mech Regt at the end of the Campaign and had many Squats in his force that had joined up with the 12th to escape the final destruction of the Home World’s. They returned to Cadia just in time to take part in the 13th Black Crusade where they encountered a Carolonian Colonel named Hunter and a Kriegan called Brusilov.
Jacka’s Cadian Unit had become during the EoT a very mixed bag. The unit contained an unusual number of Squats, Ogryns and Ratlings. And it seems to have a habit of picking up stragglers who had been left behind by other units. By the end of the EoT Campaign the 12th Cadian had become part of a Brigade commanded by Jacka known as the ‘Orphans’ Brigade. The unit was made up of the following units:
12th Cadian Mech Regt (Mixed unit of Cadians, Squats, Ogryns and Rattlings)
62nd Cadian Armoured Regt
1st / 2nd Tayhosian Air Mobile Infantry Regt (Carolonians)
1st Titagel Regt (Camulodians)
17th / 20th Valeria Regt (Carolonians)
16th Cadian Artillery Regt
40th Cadian Combat Sustainment Regt
Prior to the commencement of the Medusa V Campaign Colonel Jacka was ordered by Lord Castellan Usarker E. Creed to establish a Staging and Assembly Area for all the Imperial Guard units gathering for the Medusa V Campaign. He commenced building the Battle Group that would go on to make significant contributions to the Medusa V Campaign’s outcome. This Battle Group was known as Imperator Aegis (the Emperors Shield). Lord Marshal Graf Harazahn gave Jacka the responsibility and initial command of Battle Group Imperator Aegis. Jacka was to Command the Battle Group for the two thirds of the Campaign. Jacka was summoned back to Cadia by Creed and he returned to Cadia with the Orphan Brigade. Jacka handed over Command of Battle Group Imperator Aegis to Major-General Drewxfu of the 62nd Cadian Regiment. Drewxfu then went on and lead Battle Group Imperator Aegis to victory on its mission.
Jacka’s 2IC is a Squat named LT Col Stewart Conner and he is typical of this hardy race and fiercely loyal to Jacka. After Jacka saved many members of Conner’s Stronghold from destruction by the ‘Nid’ they joined the 12th and now fight along side Jacka’s Cadian’s. Today the men and women of the ‘Orphans’ travel from Warzone to Warzone on ships of the once proud Squat Homeworlds Fleet.
Jacka is a strange sight on the battlefield, as he is followed by a large Ogryn Bone Head. This Ogryn is Master Sgt William Greystone, (Bill) who is Jacka’s Body Guard and has been since Bill and his Ogryn Comrades saved Jacka, when they appeared on the battlefield just in time to destroy a ‘Nid’ swarm that was about to overwhelm Jacka’s Command Group. Bill and his boys had been left behind by a Mordian unit that had fled the battlefield days before. This was to the first of many times that Bill would save Jacka’s life. Oh yes! Bill is famous for his brew which is a very special blend of herbs and spices. Not used in the making of fried chicken.
Jacka's Commissar is named Wu and is the son of the High Lord Commander Militant of Terra, but he does not know it. Wu’s sister Wugen who is also a Commissar in Jacka’s force is unaware of the relationship either and does not know Wu is her brother. Jacka’s father is the High Lords Adjutant General. Jacka has a Vox Operator called Jenks a Carolonian and a Medic known as Doc Evans. His Regimental Sgt Major Jamie Howe keeps this lot under control and carries the regimental Standard of the Orphan Brigade.
What does the Army now look like? Here are some pictures. Unfortunately, they are a little old and there have been some changes. The main one is that all the Leman Russ have been upgraded to MK3 Mars Pattern with extra armour.

I love it. Nice and interesting background, great army, lots of vehicles, very cool. Could you maybe show a close up of:
the tracked transporters one can see behind the manticors and in front of the Vulture
the Manticore on the long truck
the wheeled vehicles in front of the Basilisks
the heavy weapons teams in front of the Medusa
Those would all be pretty interesting to see as inspiration for my own projects.

Yes it is and about 25 years in the making. I have about six hundred Troopers mainly Cadian and Squats with the some other IG Units. I have 50 Kasrkin for example.

No worries here they are. The first is a BOAR transporter, the second is my version of a Deathstrike Missile launcher, the next my version of a Quad Gun Tow Tractor and the Quad Gun itself.

Stated work on a Rogal Dorn Battle Tank during the last week. GW has made a great kit. Great instructions and assembly tolerance are amazing. You have to watch any pre-painting does not affect the assembly because it is that tight. Lots of choice in the kit bits, maybe a little to much for my liking. Anyway it coming together well. I am using parts off an old tank for the attached fruit and crew. This old tank (see below) is being replaced by the Dorn.
The thing that I found annoying was the whole centre section of the bottom of the tank was missing so I found an after market bit for the Dorn and it work a treat in filling the gap. In fact it look like it was a GW part.

Mainly Old Crow models the BOARS were made by a guy here on Dakka for his IG base. He sold me six. I did modify loads on the BOARS. The canvas backs come from an after market company who makes WW11 parts in 1/48 scale. Damned if I can remember their name. No I do Black Dog and here is the link:

Kid_Kyoto wrote:You are a gentleman and a scholar sir.
Indeed and no worries.
Completed the main work on the Rogal Dorn today. So now only have to add side spossons, side shields, more fruit, unit markings and decals and job will be done. Good kit to put together, although I did have issues with the tracks as I did not follow the instructions. All good though.
Here's a comparison between the Dorn and Russ.

I completed the Rogal Dorn today. It was a four day job and I am not quite done as I have to put decals on the beast. You have to do a lot of pre-painting with this kit as you can not paint this once it is built as you will not be able to get to a lot of places you can see. Need to do the tracks following the instructions ie: don't cut the tracks from the frames and throw them away. They are numbered on the frames and it is very hard to work the instructions without them. This would be the best kit for assembly that GW has done for the IG.
I decided to mount a Gatling Canon, Auto Canon, Oppressor Canon, Heavy Stubber (of course), 2 x Bolters in sponsons and a Melta Gun. I did not mount some of the weapons as per the instruction as it was just dumb so the Dorn got some nice headlights. I used the old Chimera Smoke Launcher as well. I also like that this kit a has a full range of vehicle lights which in the past have not been on most IG kits.
Anyway here is some pictures.

CB,
Good to hear from you. Time for me to start painting again. I'm doing terrain bits as well in my other blog.
In Apr 20 I commenced this Salamander using a Blood and Skulls after market internal mod. I got painters block for the second time and left this unfinished. Not because of Covid either. I had an issue with the auto gun turret, hmm still do. That said with the amount I have painted in the last month I think I'm over the block. Just need to start doing some Troopers.
I thinking seriously of just using a Stubber mount with this vehicle as it is just a Command Vehicle for my Artillery Company. I finished the undercoat and did the first primary coat should have in done in two days its just a Chimera.

Ta Mate appreciated.
The Salamander has come along today and I have completed all of the main painting. Just detail to do now and unit colours of course. The after market bits I have used are from Rat Gard ( RG) miniatures. They produce some good items and are worth a look. The Salamander has RG track guards, side and front armour with engine ports and the interior is a Blood and Skulls mod. I am doing three figures but only one is for this project. The others are for two other vehicles I have in the buid line, and Atlas and MK111 Mars Pattern Leman Russ. I will finish this one by the end of the week.
Ohh, I also remove the Auto Canon and replaced with a turret and Stubber. It just did not work for me.

The Blood and Sculls kit fits really well as do most of there bits, there is about three pieces and the ramp. Apprecited you like the Dorn.
Huron black heart wrote:Well that is an impressive collection, I love it when you can see an army that has been lovingly built up over many years.
Ta mate. Started in 1994 when the first Chimeras come out. I managed to keep the same theme with some quirky bits in amoughts the army.
Did a bit more on the Salamander today. Paintings all but complete just need to tidy up a bit and the add the fruit, decals and crew. Crew is about done and I hope to complete this one on Friday.

Ragsta old mate good to see your still around. I'm a Warseer refugee here so I thought I'd get a couple of blogs going. Glad you like were my IG Army been going.
I just finished this Salamander today which I stopped working on in Apr 20 and I have only just got the painting started up again over Christmas. I actually quite pleased how the Salamander has come out. I also completed the crew for it and my next two tanks as well an Atlas and MKIII Mars Pattern Leman Russ.
This is my 33rd Chimera and is the ride for the Commander of my Artillery Regt.

CB,
Mate what have you been doing. Too much terrain and not enough Tanks.
Well speaking about the 22nd Tank, today I have been working on the fruit and hull detail. Worked on the turret and have magnetized the Lasgun and Hvy Bolter on the front of the Russ. I was not happy with how the underneath looked so I did some work to hide a little of the FW mold issues that were not just quite right. I used the same plastic card work that I am doing on the lower front armour. I will be doing some riveting in the morning and hopefully I can commence painting on Sunday.

An impressive collection of armor and thanks for the dialogue as you've posted!
I like the Dorn- haven't had opportunity to build one yet and you've done a good job with the detailing. I like that you include so many crewman on your vehicles; I've always maintained that an armored fighting vehicle- while impressive in its own right- is a dead thing until you see the signs that men actually crew and use them.
Also agree with your decision to replace the cannon turret on the Salamander with a pintle mounted stubber- looks much better balanced.
Rock on!

Post by: Colonel Jacka
Thanks MC, your comments are appreciated. The Dorn is a good kit and worth adding to your IG Army. You are so right about vehicles with no crew are dead things. You have to have some guy hanging of a Stubber at the very least. Also, any artillery pieces have to have a full crew and ammo vehicles supporting them. Yeah I'm happy with the Salamander and the pintle mount.
osjclatchford wrote:Emperor's guts, the boy loves a tank! Fantastically huge collection of guard goodies going on here...Getting excited for the upcoming plastic malcador and other solar auxiliary vehicles per-chance? I know I am.
LOL! Only a love them a little. New IG tanks coming? I'm always happy about that
Pyroalchi wrote:By the way, should you ever consider selling of those wheeled transports, send me a PM
Sorry mate not likely as they can't be replaced now.
Well I did a fare bit on the Russ today. Had some drama with the sposson bolters which slowed me down, but I did manage to complete the build. Bad day for painting here today a bit cool and lots of wind. Which is a pain when your are trying to spray undercoat and get the base coat done. I made it in the end, but will have to fix some of the plastic card work that just not quite right on the bottom of the hull. I also managed to get all the fruit undercoated as well. With a bit of luck I may complete the painting tomorrow.

Post by: Colonel Jacka
Had to do some modifications on the lower hull plates as they were not working for me. Added plastic card and rivets and problem solved. I add extra armour to the lower front of the tank as the Russ never looked finished there to me and with the Blood and Skulls side armour, adding the additional plates works well. Finished all the base coats and I am now doing the detail work and painting fruit and weapons. No more work now on this until the weekend.

Well I completed the detail painting and put the tracks on. The blood and skulls armoured sides also went on. Added the bolter side sponsons, jerry cans, tools and assorted bundels. The crewman went in and a took hold of his Stubber. This one brings the Tank Company up to 13 Leman Russ with only another Atlas to go. Just put the decals and packs and we are complete.

Command Tank 2nd Troop 12th Cadian Mech Regt is now back in action after repairs to her engine bay and rear suspension which occurred when she received Krak Missile in the rear end. Some what annoying that was. Lt Col Conner's Tech Priests have performed well and brought Tank 21 back on line.
Well all done. A lot of parts I use come from the old Chimera kit. I use the original smoke launcher, antenna (I have no more of this part) on all my vehicles as they look far better then the new ones which looks like some sort of plant (Smk Launcher). One the pieces I use on the Mk III LR is that odd little plastic floor bit that you used to get. Which was a piece that only come into use if you were building a FW Hydra, Trojan or Manticore. I use this to build the additional frontal armour. Two of them in fact (And I have no more of these either). I use a range of bits from the Tank sprue to add fruit to the vehicle. The packs are from Secret Weapon which unfortunately like Blood and Skulls has closed. The B and S armour sides just fit so well and they really beef the LR up. The crewman's heads come from Puppet War who have the best heads on the market.
Well the last picture is the current line up of 12th Cadian Mech Regt and the 62nd Cadian Armoured Regt for your viewing pleasure. LOL!

Well on to the next project. This is a rebuild of a model done by Klaus Not Santa. Awhile ago and I do mean awhile ago I acquired his Thalasa 1 ship which had been one of his many excellent dioramas. Other projects have got in the way of getting this kit bash started. Now I have cleared my list of to do builds I am going to do a complete rebuild, creating a sea going Leman Russ crewed by Inso's great new Squat figures that are on sale with Macrocosm.
I needed to do a bit of a clean up to remove some modeled ocean of the hull and also remove the the hatches from the torpedo tubes as I had lost one and would need to rebuild them. I will be putting a Leman Russ turret on the for-deck and add two Las Canon Sponsons. I also have a couple of ideas for other pieces of firepower. The Anti Aircraft Gun will probably stay. Lots to do yet but here is some progress pictures.

90662
Post by: Colonel Jacka
I'm working on the hull first and some prep work for the aft deck. As you can see I have removed the foam ocean from the sides and will repair any damaged rivets (I hate rivets) I have worked of the turret ring mounting which has come out well. I used a dehydrator for hearing aids which was a perfect fit to hull and you could mount a Leman Russ turret mounting perfectly on it. Bit of glue and its done. I found that the PVC pipe I use was perfect for the Stubber mounts and the will go on the aft cabin which I will be remodeling. These will be raised of the hull. The sponsons will fit well with only minor work. The turret I will not have a crewman hanging out for once as I intend to about 4 - 5 Squat crew elsewhere viable. I have some plans for the AA Gun which will move further aft. Smoke launchers are in place.

90662
Post by: Colonel Jacka
Yes it did. You can just see the plastic of the dehumidifier capsule I used. The capsule fitted perfectly into the existing hole in the deck and them its rim fitted perfectly in to the turret rim like it was made for it. I then glued and push to the right level and had a perfect gun mount for the turret to go on. About five minutes work.

chrisanthony1979 wrote:Hi used to follow you on warseer so glad to see you here I have two of the forgeworld leman russ to build any tips to help with my build
Thanks mate glad to be here. I have five tips:
1. Clean all the flash off very carefully as some times a part is covered.
2. Look closely when fitting tracks as you will have to do some cleaning, cutting and sanding to insure a square fit. Get this wrong and your tank will rock for all the wrong reasons.
3. Make sure you up armour the front lower hull as it looks s##t otherwise.
4. Get some Blood and Skulls side armour and your tank will rock for a different reason.
5. Use bits from the tank and original Chimera sprue.
RedSarge wrote:I commend your ability to stick to one army! And it's darn nice too!
Yep! Since 1996 now. Thanks mate.
And its cheap as well. See above. Mate it fits like a glove and the the mount rotates tight, does not fall out when turn up side down.
Lads I'm away on another project at the moment more to follow on the weekend.

Well I did some work yesterday and added new hunter killer missile tubes to the hull. These were some Old Crow hatches I had in the bits box and with only a little bit of work fitted really well. I redesigning the forward hull so that it will not have safety rails as the crew will move inside the hull to battle positions. I will have safety rails on aft section of the near the rear cabin. I working in some old Kreigan tank parts as well.

I have not been idle. The project has advanced some over the last weeks. As you can see I have now redone the rear cabin and have placed the new Stubbier mounts and the Anti-aircraft gun on it. More progress today. I have completed the rear cabin adding door hatches, antennas, air vents and engine fruit. I have also added some patches were the sponsons will be mounted. I have done the new gunnels around the new cabin and they fit well. I still have more work to do on them to complete. It woking out pretty well in fact. Looking forward to painting soon

Well mate, as an old Gunner these guns do my head in. First of all they have no traverse which means the barrel cannot move left to right so you have to move the trails to change direction of fire. WTF? All you have is elevation also. What is it with the seat behind the breech you would be toast sitting there from the guns recoil. I will be changing that. Also, the Bofor like jacks world be ok for and anti aircraft gun but not a Howitzer. Mate those trails need some decent spades. Who ever did this has never had a close look at artillery guns.

Work so far. I have removed the dickie seat and replaced with a large nut and steel plate looks much better. Also, I decided to make my own base out of MDF and plastic card to allow for base whole for the gunners. I have about 24 gunners that I move round depending of what vehicle or gun I am playing. Made them out of Cadian figures as GW until recently did not have dedicated gunners.

Had a good run today and got the bases completed. The jacks on the Gun's don't have the same level so there was a bit of mucking about to get them attached to the base. Did adjustments using the sand on the base and all is good. Here is number one Gun. Only have to do decals now. I will need to match them to the right battery in my Arty Company.

Ta mate. I purchased a lot of the FW Medusa and Basilisks shells and casing when they were still available. So I was able to give Gunners rounds to hold and then I did four Tinners pallets with mixed high explosive, smoke, illum and canister rounds on them. About thirty rounds a pallet. So all the guns and vehicles in my Arty regiment have full crews and a pallet of rounds when gaming.
blockade23 wrote:Lotta tanks!
B23 that not even a third of them.
OK on to the next project one that I have been trying to complete. This is a rebuild of a model done by Klaus Not Santa. Awhile ago and I do mean awhile ago (2017) I acquired his Thalasa 1 ship which had been one of his many excellent dioramas. As you can see I have completed the kit bashing and have now done most of the undercoating today. I only have the fruit to undercoat tomorrow and then I will begin the detailed painting. This is not the final green she will be. This ship is part of a riverine or brown water fleet hence the green. Similar to the craft used in Vietnam on the Mekong River. She will have four crew visible.

Hope to have it finished by the end of the week. Today's undercoating went really well as it was super hot here today so the paint was drying in record time.

Well I got a lot done today and I am about 90% complete less crew figures. Another good day for painting so I got all the detail and wash stuff done. Managed to save one of the name plates but lost half of the second one which I an now trying to replicate. Got the colour on the plate right just have to do some free hand work on the name. I will apply decals next, complete the gunnels, and then I will glue everything in to position. I will need to do a little bit of green stuff work on the stern, then a final touch up and she will be done.

Ta mate, been a busy year with not much time for painting and modeling I'm afraid. Anyway here is some of the crew I'm doing. I found Inso's NCO's make good Stubber Gunners as well.

Artillery vehicle park looking very shmexy indeed, Colonel. Please tell me you have a dedicated display case for each branch of your brigade hahaha!
So is that Klaus’ original model, and you’ve refurbished it? Crying shame what they allowed to happen to Warseer, so much cool stuff lost!

G'day Ragsta.
Indeed, a dedicated case for each. I have four at the moment, Infantry, Armour, Artillery and Amphib Squats. Yes that is Klaus original modal and I have rebuilt it. Jackfied in fact. It was very sad to see all those great threads on Warseer disappear. Some truly great projects never to be seen again. Hope you enjoy the finished ship below. Less crew of course.

Yes they are, these first four crew figures are to get my eye in to paint the 100+ I have to do. I completed the Thalassa today, but with some mods. The dual Stubber mounts were not quite right so I went to one. I have used one of Inso's NCO Squats as the Gunner. They work really well and I have a few spare so these will get used up in future vehicles. Decals are done and I will fight this as a Leman Russ, less the Hydra on the back that's just for looks. The torpedo tubes are the Hunter Killer missile racks. So I only lack a bolter.

I finished the Squat Crew for the Thalassa 1 today. They have come out not to bad at all. I used one of Inso's NCO as the Stubber Gunner and was really pleased how he worked out. I'll be using a lot of these as vehicle crew figures in the future. I used some of Inso "novelty figures" as well. I used the Lad with the hook and bionic leg as may ship's engineer and his artillery figure as crew. His Officer figure I have used as the Captain. I still have to free hand one of the ship name plates, but basically she is finished, hmm, only took me six years to do. She was the last of my outstanding projects bar my termite. Which will be commenced soon. Now on to a lot of Squat figures.

So after completing the Thalassa you may think I am doing another Squat but, no a Cadian of renown in fact. Sadly one of my favorite Cadian Hero's was killed off by GW. He was of course Sergeant Lukas Bastonne he was one of the most highly regarded and capable non-commissioned officers within the ranks of the Cadian Shock Troops regiments of the Astra Militarum.
Bastonne was killed in action during the defence of Cadia in the 13th Black Crusade in ca. 999.M41. That said I have just completed a knock off Cadian Kasrkin made by Brother Vinnie. This figure unfortunately is made of resign. (I would love it in metal), that said I think it is one of the most dynamic IG figures I have ever seen. He is armed with a power sword and bolter and and is running forward about to destroy some chaos scum. He has come up pretty well even though I broke the bolter of once I had finished him.
I have made him a command figure and will use he in my 812 Kasrkin Company, the 812 is also sometimes known as the 1st - 2nd Tayhosian Air Mobile Infantry Regt. (That's for you Hoots were ever you are?) I have included a photo of them and the transports (rides) as well.

I just like his background and the figure from BV jsut fits the bill. You have three heads as well, bare head, helmet and helmet with respirator.

Ta mate. Glad you like the lads.
Well boring stuff since I last posted. I have over 100 Inso Squats to do with a Coy Comd Squad, two Platoons of three Squads and four or five Support Squads. As these models took a while to all come on the market, it took a while to get all the Squads with the right fit. In fact Inso even helped me get a dozen of the different types of Vox troopers as I only had dozens of the original one. You somethings have to get a lot of figures you do not need to get the ones you want. I happy with the balance now.
That said I have enough to do a third Platoon down the track. I want to atl least get a player Army ready. I doing all the base coats on the whole Army and then I will start painting them. I have already painted about sixteen figures, but these have now been dispersed amongst other Squads to get a good variances of figures. Inso made well over forty figures so it is not hard to get this to occur. Here is some boring start up pictures.
I still thinking about what ride they will get.

For a number of years I have been wanting to do an Imperial Mole or two. After looking at the FW one and trying to build my own I found the Manic Games Veer-Myn Tunneler kit. After many months (10 in fact after I got them finally through a kick-starter) I ended up with eight kits with the idea to create two three section Moles and and two one section Moles which I will build as surfacing Moles.
This is a very simple kit and it was easy to build. I only used one section of the Manic games drill and used a drill I found in a Lego kit (x4). From undercoating to finished painting the first mole took five hours. A black undercoat with lots of dry brushing and inking and the first Imperial Mole is done.
The finish Mole is 330mm long (1 .5 Chimeras in length) and will carry 22 Guardsmen. With a melta cutter on the front. The two Moles should carry a full Platoon (3 x Sections) with a HQ and Spt Squad. Very pleased how easy this build was and how it turned out. The second one is now undercoated.

Yes you do not want to be known as a hater of Squats. That said the second Mole is well under way with undercoat complete and dry brush underway.

Glad you like it TG. Yes they a pristine at the moment, but they will look different emerging and hopefully they will look like they have been traveling underground.
Here are some comparison shots with the Mole sized against some Squat Troopers, Leman Russ and a Rogal Dorn. Yep the Moles are big.
I have completed the build of the emerging moles. Now I have to mount them on a board. I have made them so they have a exit door in front, which is revealed when the main drill is ejected from the main body when the Mole surfaces. This gives the Troopers an exit point so they can take the objective thus winning the game for Jacka.
I will position the Moles angled to the surface on a mound dug up by the drilling.

D23 Ta mate glad you like it. That said I am having trouble with the exit moles, what I planned to do failed on a number of fronts. So it is back to the drawing board.
Today I went back doing my favorite job. Not! Prepping Troopers for painting. I have now done a full Platoon and started on the Platoon Command Squad for the second platoon. Really happy with the Platoon Commander he is so angry.
