Welcome all to the 117th round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favorite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds.
This month the topic is Ancients - Anything old: for example: Elves, mummies, venerable dreadnoughts, dinosaurs, Dante, crones, bearded sages, wizened elders. Space marine banner bearers also hold this title. Or for a more meta standpoint, a model from the depths of time. Early sculpts, actual lead models, minis steeped in history. Or personally, (and most importantly) anything that has been in your pile of shame or primed pile for multiple years.
How To Enter
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You may enter at any time during the month, up to the last minute. We do encourage people to enter early, as to be part of the community, but if you can’t start until the 11th hour, that’s OK.
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of November and will end at midnight EST on November 30th. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.
My entry is a rendition of the skeletal king, but then ORKY (or norky/un-orky (undead orky))
It's still close to samhainn so a bit of a carryover, and its also norkvember right after orktober so, don't hold this against me!!!
Also some silly story to it;
Spoiler:
Nubh'grul da fers unorky!
"Here, oh dear connoiseurs of a good ork story'.. is inscribed the tale of Nubh'grul, in our sophisticated and superior (to orkish) english language known as the first undead ork.. or so he thinks himself, apparently.. as there is no way to tell other than how many cobwebs have accumulated around the bastard.
Regardless!!.. as this story was once told in the original tongue, the best I can do is narrate the account in the manner it was ..eh.. paraphrased.
As a minor disclaimer.. this first Ork was mysteriously titled to Skorketal king, and stated to be first found deep under a cathedral seated on a throne, himself though to be long dead.
When some barbarian and paladin adventurers of a surface town came across the forgotten thing they thought to rummage through its carcass for a drop of orky rings or necklaces but instead were quickly smitten.
Ah such was the fate of many a dungeon crawler.
But not the brave specification guild of ours! Ofcourse lead by yours truly; Emmett von icks dactylifera the fourthieth! (from a very succesful family!) .. or mister Em to my aides!.."
-
So starts the diary case number #9, found at 'crimescene.. for lack of a better word' set B and C at the entrance of the old cathedral, the fresh bodyparts scattered across these two sites unrecognicable prior to the finding of this particular belonging.., the other cases were all unsolved giving the impression that this so called guild was of either novice or fantastical nature.. and the victims had no idea what they were getting into.
Afterall, this is the wasteland.. and our Brazen Consuls Cadian dispatch has nothing better to do than investigate such ancient landmarks, hardly still standing on its decomposing foundations..
If there truly is some underground complex, noone would dare move a blockage out of the way to bury themselves hind..
"Colonel..".."our excavator drone detected fresh blood spatters as deep as thirty feet down the descend..".."they clearly did go in"
"madmen.." .."any report on missing commoners?"
"none sir, but a miners town down south did have some crazy cultists pass through"
"could be them.."
"what of them.. any specifications?"
"some occult club, investigating rural mysteries"
"that alligns with the diary.., very well.."
"you think they found what they were looking for Colonel?"
"back to your station, I'll see what else they wrote first.."
-
Later that evening, in the Colonel's command tent..
Page 24;
"The aides have bravely and ably removed the rubble over the cellar hatch, if the rumors are true there is a straightforward tunnel down to the cloyster, all we will have to do is ensure that our lanterns stay lit and keep our distance from everything of value may we invite the Skeleton king's punishment! At worst we could nick away a trinket as we return to the surface, but only if the myth turns out true!
Let this be the first success of my name!" (this comment seemed to be made over and over again throughout the diary, to every case..)
The Colonel flipped forward through the pages until the content changed into hasty scribbles.. almost reaching the diary's end..
"It looked dead!!.. it did!!"
"Its huge!"
"lost one aide", "can't keep in"
.. can't keep in?.. can't keep what in? His food? The Colonel thought..
An official entered the tent with concern written on her face.. "The drone has finished its mapping..".."It's empty"..
"Whoever or whatever did this, it isn't inside that space.."
The Colonel closed the Diary and stood up from his chair.. "So that is what he meant.., the killer got out of the site.., that means.. he's roaming the wasteland.."
"Could be we're dealing with a Tyranid for all we know.., or something chaos..infested.."
"The diary didn't specify.. we cannot go by the ramblings of cultists.."
The official inquired.. "What did the diary say?"
"Lunacy about some undead Ork.., out of the question.."
"why?"
"You don't seriously believe it, Hannah.." The Colonel reprimanded..
"It's ghost stories.. people make up all sorts of things to what they don't want to face.., we're dealing with Xenos here all the time, it stresses everyone out, makes them go mad.."
Hannah the official nodded and saluted.. "Yes sir, am I excused.."
The Colonel waved her away and sat down again.. then as he was back alone opened up the diary one more time.. the final page had one last panicked scribble.., just one shaky word..
"Shot"
He stood up from his chair again, looked out from under the flap of the tent's entrance.. noone.., the sky cloudy and dark, not a star or moon visible.., he took his long coat and cape, donned his military cap and went out to the site..
It was raining, yet silent.. the site was abandoned by all but the deactivated flood light constructions, a case closed.. but it nagged him on.. what kind of shot... what kind of weapon..
He didn't want to be thought of as a nut, investigating the possibility that such a thing as an undead Ork existed.. but it could've been an Ork nonetheless.. and if he could find typical Orkish ammunition.. it would require emediate changes to the Cadian formation, such a thing would be a massive restructure, not to be undertaken on a guess..
Carefully moving through and under the makeshift supportbeams, he entered the tight corridor down the cellar hatch.. it smelled strongly of sulfur.. something gutteral..
Perhaps also incendiaries.. gunpowder..
Nothing like the plasmics or acid a Tyranid would throw..
No fuel or bullet marks one would expect from a Chaos marine to be left behind..
No.. claw marks, no sludge, no paint of any armor scratched..
Just the all encompassing mist of sulfur.., the walls keyed up with ridges as if something big had pushed itself through.. The Colonel felt around..then looked at the residue on his gloves ..rust..
He turned around and made for the surface again, he had to radio in that Orks were in the area.
-
"W..where were you Colonel!.. didn't you hear the gunfire?!" Hannah was standing at the entrance of the site, the floodlights turned on away from it as the drasted sulfuric mist expanded everywhere like a tumulteous sea..
"The hell is going on Hannah?" The Colonel coughed while wrapping a shawl around his head..
"We are being raided!.. blue looking things.. they won't go down.. it's like they can't die!!"
"Ridiculous.. must be some Tau tech".. The Colonel retorted.. "regroup a formation"
"Th..there's noone left Colonel!" Hannah cried out.. grabbing one of the floodlights tightly, aiming the beam around.. "But those things seem to really dislike concentrated light.."
"Its not Tau Colonel..".."they are .." suddenly the floodlight turned off as its glass shatted.. Hannah was blown back beside and past the Colonel..
From all directions came feet dragging some bulky forms, barely visible in the dark.. clicking and twanging what sounded like reloading..
The Colonel aimed his pistol at the assailants and threatened.. while stepping back toward the entrance of the Cathedral ruin, carefully squatting down beside Hannah to feel her pulse..
He grabbed her by the straps to pull her along, dead or alive he wouldn't leave her out with those monstrosities.., down the cellar hatch they went and blocked it from below with one of the support beams..
The next day Hannah had awoken, thankfully recovered from what had turned out to have been a concussion, outside the site had been abandoned oncemore.. but all the equipment had been smashed up, the camp practically destroyed.. and apart from some individual ribs not a soldier's remains left to the ravens..
Alas, a Drukhari fleet had landed nearby, investigating the very same event..
The Colonel employed his diplomatic status, which the Drukhari accepted under the circumstances of sharing information, and Hannah and him were provided a green zone for extraction.
The Colonel was soon promoted for his heroics in rescuing Hannah, who herself turned in her resume and relocated to a telecommunication center'.. but he found himself quickly redeployed to the wasteland, not because of his experience.. but for trading Cadian secrets with the Drukhari.., there.. he oversaw the aftermath of the first encounter with undead Orks, as much as his part in the escalations.
Fin.
The miniature kitbashed and painted, is Nubh'grul the Skorketal king, was he real? Was he truly the allfather of Unorky spawn? And what is the Drukhari part in the uptick of such?
For the last question, read the tale of Nubgruk, perhaps one could consider the legacy of Nubh'grul. -
For this one I've picked another dreadnought for active service in the Deathwatch.
This ancient warrior is from the Space Wolves, and clearly used to be someone very special, given his intricate totem covered body and shoulders. These are all stls from Greytide Studios added to a standard kit.

No lead like old lead!
I’ve got at least one of those guys kicking around unpainted myself. I’d have to break out the archeology gear to go find him though…
I'm entering these Viking guys, having checked with big Nev:
Granted they have had the hafts and bases primed separately but the base are actually the wrong colour.
My first wip of the basing, maybe its done.. maybe some more linework? hmm..
Tried the micro-pointilism style (for lack of a better word) as in using tiny dots of lighter and darker shades for a more patternized grainy look.
Is it visible? Dunno, didn't like it as much on the metals, looks good on the biological bits like those hands and skull..
Should I add blood on the saw? or maybe dust..hmm..
two smaller pics (further away does look better like with pointilized paintings)
For finalizing details on the base you might want to wait until the mini is done? So if elements need to match to tie them together you can see what’s needed. There are times you want a clean mini walking into dust and blood, and/or a weathered one on a pristine setting, but that should not be accidental. That sort of dichotomy is there to tell a story.

I might go over the metals a bit with either a tiny sponge or drybrush (drybrush more likely) to give it another texture, pointilism looks great on skin etc though, but its like painting a rock pattern on a tree' to the metal.
I do like trying out new textures, maybe I'll do a borderlandsesque/comic style too sometime. (not this time)
I'm hoping that I will have time this month. If so, my plan is to paint the last three remaining Dark Vengeance Dark Angels that I still have most of the pieces for on sprue. Two sergeants and a Raven Wing biker. Additionally, I just bought an old metal chapter master Azrael.
If I somehow end up with spare time, I'll try to add a fifth model to the group.
I really like the pointilism style effect but I am having some OCD on the reddish pink looking way too purple, thinking of doing his pants over completely, even though it looks good in itself, I think it clashes way too hard with the greenish of the Ork skin and it prevents me from using light blues which would clash even harder.
Ughhh I'd rather just find a way to make the purple disappear more organicly than having to redo it whole but ok, I think a more neutral jute beige to muted orange would look way better here and tie everything together, and its more -ancient-.. I mean, what ancient wears pink??
(its a wip)
(yes I still have to do the teeth yes, and slightly make the hair look better)
I managed to find a little bit of time this afternoon to make a start on putting some colour to the dreadnought after doing the layers of drybrushing on friday

Ouch. All your toes intact? He’s a big old chunk of lead.
XvArcanevX - You are not the only one, I feel exactly the same My first ever Warhammer models were terminators from Dark Vengeance when the set came out.
Me, I'd occasionally join in on the nostalgia train if it wasn't for a few things. I have enough models from the 90s to last me a while, but since that's when I started they don't feel that old. Like, not vintage. Basically new. Almost released only yesterday. So they hardly count.
Then there's this little issue that getting them out of storage involves a major archeological dig. That's usually not an option.
And I actually like the brave new hi-res world we live in. Sure, old models have their charm but I vividly remember how I felt about inadequacies in sculpting and casting quality back in the day. I like it just fine in the present and prefer to look ahead rather than back.
I’d trade my vintage models for eyes that still worked like when I was young and a body that didn’t ache all the time. You can go to ebay, or get modern sculpts in the classic style. I can get a magnifier and ibuprofen. I all works out.
Getting the real old lead out would take a major dig. Which I should probably do at some point anyway. I’m starting to forget what’s in all of them.
Now you’re making me feel bad for ignoring the unpainted vintage metal I have squirrelled away and picking a more recent release anyway. I’m a monster!
I started warhammer around 2018 or so, my old friendsgroup used to play it during fantasy' but I never joined in because back then (around 2008 or so) I was addicted to ultima online instead -_-, realy should've joined them back then sigh..
So don't worry, I too am a newbhammer.

edit: Oh btw, as for my working on the Skorketal king, I have done a LOT of work on it yesterday but am sleep deprived today due to a downstairs neighbour ruining my early mornings -every single day- for months now (will go to the corporate landlord today about this because I am fed up with how tired and stressed out it makes me 5-6 days a week)
Turns out just a careful wash with skeleton horde jutefied (is this a word?) the purple away and then just made some new brown pallet to redot it a bit better, so the pants are good now. Also did a massive amount of work on all the armor bits, individually freehanding the shades, wear and rust (using my secret technique of glue+a little finesand + iron warriors + fuegan orange.)
Did all the teeth and nails, only things to do is a bit of the stuff below his feet, his kitbashed boomstick and a boss-standard on his back(to which I will probably glue a warhorn because it didn't fit anywhere else without obscuring well-painted detail)
This is probably the most intricately paint I've ever done and its all because its a single-mini because I get bored quick when doing groups of things.

Ah! Nice to know I’m not too alone having no metal classics to drag out of hiding somewhere, although part of me thinks it’s all pretty fascinating and cool to look at! That knight is definitely vintage… looking rather classic and suave I must say. Haha.
I feel you on the issue with doing ‘groups’. I think it’s because I like to hone in on a character and really work on the little details. It’s what I love about this hobby, getting lost bringing a little figure to life… imagining how the little fella would work in its fantasy world. Painting a group always ends up feeling more like, well, almost ‘work’…if that makes sense?

High five fellow hobby noob. I feel like we’re kind of the priveleged kids of the hobby world when I hear some of the horror stories of assembling the older kits!

But to each their own
See Halfling84… Geifer too is recalling horror we have never known. Well ok maybe I’m being dramatic, but I’m just compensating for the fact I haven’t got any vintage stock to hit y’all with during one of these monthly showdowns!

No shame in being new to the hobby. We all started somewhere. Some of us it was just lifetimes ago…
Now if you excuse me, some clouds need to be yelled at…
Before time began, there was, Nevelon’s collection of unpainted miniatures….. aeons of potential can be found, or at least theoretically found, somewhere, inside our leaders abode.
As long as you can still put your trousers on facing the right way you’re all good chief! Haha
As a newbie to the hobby without collection of old metal figures, I need to make something with the other meaning of the word "ancient". Would the model I presented in previous month - Eirene be good? She fits the theme because she is from the music video made by the band named Ancient Bards If it is too stretched explanation I can think of some different model, maybe I'll buy some Eldar. It is the first competition where I don't have anything fitting to build.

To be fair I struggled with ideas for this month too…
With a bit of help I settled on the wood spirit but it wasn’t an obvious choice at first.
Now December, well, I have something special lined up. My first ever kitbash. It’s a challenge for myself but one I’m excited to start!
(Just realised I did kind of a kitbash once before but this is of a different scale and far more complex)

That’s fine. Pretty much anything you can bend into the topic is good.
At some point I should paint up some old grenadear lead amd do some side-by-sides with my first work. But as my early paint can cause traumatic eye bleeding upon viewing, it might not be safe to do..
I’m quiet with work at the moment so plenty of time at the desk… progress is coming along at an accelerated pace. I might even get time to start kitbashing my secret project for December soon. Quite excited about it.
Ugh, it's my turn to beg forgiveness... I primered this fellow on Sunday and sat down tonight to paint him and got through the orange of his safety gear and the purple of his tabard before realizing that I hadn't taken a proof pic. Is this one still okay to enter? I'm not expecting a podium finish (I typically hover around mid-bottom range) and mostly I just need this comp as motivation to sit down and paint at night.
His connection to the theme is that his whole purpose in life these days is to call down the ancients from the great void beyond.

Sidenote: I am going to severely reduce my online time because of having to change my lifestyle due to a neighbour ruining my sleep, had 3 days straight of 5-6 hours and tonight had first time 8 hours (not easily mind you) by making myself tired physically' all day walking in the woods and then going to bed as early possible (still layed awake for 2 hours regardless) so though I feel somewhat refreshed right now.. I can no longer sit around but have to keep at it ensuring my physique gets tired enough to actually fall asleep as early as I want to go to bed to get up earlier than that neighbour who starts whacking her chair on the floor repeatedly around 8:30 (and sometimes around 6) and yes I have complained both to the corporation and her psychiatric aide who comes every day there and told me exactly what she is doing. I know this isn't really ontopic but then you guys know why I won't be around much anylonger.
NubH'grul the Skorketal king.

Really? Thank you!, Hope it actually get's some votes complimentary of all the work I put in these challenges this time too, not that I care about winning anything, its just that it often feels like I am doing all the extra work for the wind, especially when it comes to theme-nailing bases.
I have visited the disturbance-adress myself today and talked her into using a chair with wheels because she showed me literally what she was doing (literally raising the chair and whacking it down twice as I could hear every morning), hopefully now she understands how much it has been affecting my life (no longer can do anything in the evening as I need to go to bed super early now, and will still do that for a while to be sure as this person isn't 100% mentally) but also visited her caregivers -again- who admitted they had not looked for a solution but only told her there were complaints (what a bunch of clowns..)..
Its still stressful though, tonight I slept "ok" (waking up 5 times regardless) but eventually did had 8 hours (which is what I aim for)..
Ugh this is my achilles heel, it makes me such a different person with 0 capacity for agitations..
Anyway, logging again, gotta go outside even though its cold as a snowman climbing everest.
To the gates of Valhalla!

NGL, I never thought I'd love these as much as I do, but ultimately I'm really pleased.
I have yet to start painting my entry. Something something real life. Again...
But I knew that was going to happen in advance and planned accordingly. Still, as small and simple as my model is this month, it would be neat if I found the time to got started this week.
Lots of fun this month. We are about a third of the way into November, so pace accordingly. Especially if you plan on spending the last week in a food coma having arguments with your family.
Reminder that December is our open month, so do whatever makes your heart sing a/o you have the time to do.

Ye Olde Forest Spirit Thingy:
.
That shiny blue is fairytastic.
Thanks! I highlighted all the way up to white on the wings… which took some glazing and fiddling to not look too jarring. The weirdest part of the process was using the Scale 75 alchemy paints on the weapon. Very odd paints indeed. Not sure what I think of them really.
Anyway, glad to be in the early bird club with yourself. We can just sit back and enjoy the other submissions rolling in now. Haha. Saying that, as I keep alluding too, Im on with a bit of a customization project for December soooo

You know, one of the colorcombinations I have loved the most even since I was young was blue with brown, heh.. I even wore blue socks in leather sandals for a while cause I liked that combination so much, and then there's the really natural sky(or water)+nature combo of blue and green that works so well, and here your entry has them all three.
If my entry ends up getting some votes (never know) I can imagine we will have to battle it out, a skorky vs a shiny spirit, that would be a strange fight, I don't think your flutterer has much to fear from his boomstick as that thing is best suited in corridors, but he'll be taking swings with his cane-saw while all the unorky hands make aww gestures for not reaching high enough I suppose..
Oy vavoy as for december, haven't thought of anything yet tbh, plenty of options though.., maybe my remaining tank for the Orks.. maybe something smaller for nurgle (still got two beasts of nurgle belly sliding around)
And in the meantime (the remaining of this month) I'll finally be getting those sisters of the watch done (..I hope), just noticed how instead of blades I was accidentially prepping the quivers (which belong with the shadow warriors, but had not glued them to the units yet).... ..so started on the blades instead which also makes quicker work (pfff!) then the last remaining thing to do is all their bows that are already basecoated dark green, so more like just the detail of them (fire).. when that's done I'll tidy/clean up the table first and vow never EVER to fill it back up again with anything more than 5 mini's at a time.
Sorry for missing the halloween special, hopefully I can get back on track his month. I bought this super retro armiger knight at Adepticon and I finally have an excuse to put down a rather loud paint scheme.

Skorky vs Shiny Elf would be an interesting battle! Not sure who’d come off better there! Hmmm
I have a rule of a max of 5 minis at a time. Anything more and I begin questioning my sanity whilst painting. I’ve decided to take the plunge and ask for an airbrush from Santa this year though so maybe, if I take to it, things could change!
I could be lining armies up like a factory production line by next summer! (In my dreams)

I think it’s an ‘open’ round… at least I hope it is… as I’m currently chopping up and generally molesting a GW model in order to achieve my customization ‘vision’ for Decembers entry….
Always feels like using a scissor on paper money xD
Yup. December is the open round. Paint whatever makes your heart sing. or you have the time to do. We don’t judge. Except at the end of the month when we absolutely do in the poll.
Month is halfway gone. Time to procrastinate a little bit more, then finish in a mad frenzy

I've ordered a vex machinator yesterday but I may also get into the exxy massy spirit and paint da red gobbo and bouncer, maybe with some polar "elves" (read mini nurglers) and other tiny critters (still have two seraphon frogs I can spare one of for instance).. to make a jolly gettogether complimentary of the hardship the world tree has had to suffer the past five thousand years or so.
Many great entries this month, I especially like the tree spirit. I finally had some time for painting to enter the competition. I will Enter with Eirene from Ancient Bards music video, model made in Heroforge.
Proof :
So far she is painted with main colours as a base for shading with artstic oils:
She is supposed to look like this, unfortunately I had to use the most similar clothes available in Heroforge so not everything in the miniature looks exactly right:
JoshInJapan continues to paint my favorite minis lol. I love going through everyones works here at Dakkadakka honestly My entry should be complete by the end of next week hopefully
I'll be taking part in this month's contest. The Primaris Eradicators are a fairly recent model, but I've had it in my pile of shame for at least a year, so yeah.
Anyway, here's my proof:
I am done. With Thanksgiving looming, I probably won't have time to take and post my usual 360° pics, so unless I come running, waving my arms, and yelling, waaaaaait!, this will be my final pic for this month.
Summoning the Ancients:
Great work so far all, and for those still procrastinating, we salute you!
Ugh, resin sucks! A days worth of painting lifted right off with the masking tape. Maybe a better primer might help and hopefully I can get back on track before the month's end.
Mr Nobody wrote: Ugh, resin sucks! A days worth of painting lifted right off with the masking tape. Maybe a better primer might help and hopefully I can get back on track before the month's end.
That sucks! I’d struggle to get the motivation back on track after that kind of disaster! Hope you manage to turn it around.
I’m still neck deep in my conversion for December. I’m keeping it quiet but if I’m honest I’m not sure many people will get the reference I’m using for the project. Not to worry, I can link pics so everybody gets the idea.
I’m thinking if it all turns out ok I will post a thread detailing how I went about things… I’m assuming some folk are interested in model ‘conversion’ projects etc in these forums. It’s by far the most detailed and complicated thing involving a plastic model I’ve ever undertaken. Hopefully I don’t drop the thing or have the paint peel off like you… I’d be… most put out.

You could always start a blog here. A number of us here have them. Can be fun for a little behind the scenes, or in-depth details for projects.
Modeling and painting mishaps always suck. I hope you'll be back on track soon, Mr Nobody.
What helps me in such a case is to go about starting on a fix right away. Even just a new basecoat helps shift the mind from the problem to the solution.

I was also thinking about starting a blog, because for a year now I almost don't build any models outside of this competition and it could give me the motivation. But do people visit those blogs?

Yes? Some more then others. It takes effort to keep them updated and running. But you can get some regulars to subscribe and offer feedback. Sometimes it does feel like you are screaming into the void. But I know personally I follow more then I post in. Just not enough time to post everywhere. Especially when it’s just “that cool, keep it up” although I do some of that.
I find it’s helps and is worth it, but that might just be how I work. YMMV. Dorsn’t cost anything but time to try.

I like that idea… I think I’ll start one up in December
+1 for everyone starting a P&M blog. I follow a lot more than I comment on, but I draw inspiration and steal, er, borrow ideas from almost everyone. Keeping mine updated also keeps me painting, which in turn leads to improvement.

Thought I’d just give everyone a sneak peek at my prep so far for Decembers round.
It’s taken several attempts however, after alot of time sweating over the hobby desk, I think I’m getting close now… the face area was the main source of my nose bleeds but after using more refined sculpting tools I managed to capture the emotion of the piece I think.
I approve! Got to say, that's actually my backup plan if I don't have anything by the last week of December.
Omega is only making slow progress and every day I find something else I'm considering for next month. Kind of bites not to know if I actually have the time to get anything substantial done.

Spoiler:
Gotcha!
Thats like those ancient greek statues man, the sign of both worry and happiness captured so well on the sculpt's face, it makes me want to write a haiku in its honor;
"It is cold"
"It prolongs me"
"at night wolves come"
"food is scarce"
If that sculpt is what you're entering, most of us are in trouble. ;l
December is such a tough month, I'm not a good sculptor.

Yeah you got it! It’s a ponderous piece examining the themes of isolation and despair a cold winter can bring to the lonely traveler…
Or… I’m playing silly buggers and this is what happens around my parts when I mix up too much green stuff.
Anyway good sir… you need to put all your imagination to work in coming up with your Christmas entry! It’s the season too … um… paint another mini! But with more chocolate and fairy lights!

f..fairy.. lights..?
That will make my not-santa toybag carrier stand out way too much in these mere moonglow thicketts, *gleam gleam*..
I may have some spare greenstuff balls laying around too, maybe I can add some of them to have things to stand on for my festive woodland creepers..
But before that, I'm going to paint a CHAOSchaoschaos warpsmith for my iron warriors army I just started and perhaps finish my sisters of the watch (or procrastinate them another month, only did 5 of their bows so far, and got bored again)
I’m going to have to ask for a day’s extension now please, Nevelon. A cyclone hit my town and I’ve been without electricity for the last two days. I’m about to leave for a week. Should be back in time to finish my carnifex and post on December first though, if that’s alright.

Oof. Hope things calm down.
Absolutely. I’ll leave this open for Sunday Dec 1st, and close it early on Monday the 2nd. Give everyone the full weekend to finish things.
Work on Eirene slowly goes on - shading with artistic oil is finished. It will look better when the paint dries and becomes matte (at least I hope so ). The white parts on her clothes will be painted again.
There's a real risk that someone might be me for a change. November has turned out so bad, I haven't even had any time for some honest procrastinating!
As a reminder we are in the holiday time slip. Events, gatherings, decorating, baking, parties, etc. Everything might seem normal now, but in a couple days we are going to wake up and it’s going to be mid-January. Hungover and feeling like we’ve been hit upside the head with a stale fruitcake.
One of the reasons December is an open round is so people can fit in what they can manage.
We’ve got about a week left for this month. Pace accordingly, especially if you might be missing a chunk of it dealing with travel and family. (As I am)
Ohhhh! That bit is a SWORD! I was always a bit baffled by that balrog, since I’d never seen a painted example. Nice work on a seriously silly looking miniature!

Thanks lol, yeah definitely one of the more ambiguously detailed minis I've painted so far. I've got a ral partha dwarf from the wizards, warriors, and warlocks line that has about the same amount of ambiguous detail I might tackle next,,,
I really need to get my lighting rig up to snuff. Recent photos of my entries aren't doing the models any favors and I'm actually proud of how they turned out.
Throwing my hat into the ring last minute.
I thought I might not get my current project finished, as I only had half a month to work on it. However I managed to do quite a bit yesterday, so I might just do it!
Working on Erza of Dedheim from Kingdom Death. Jumping to the theme with "Ancient project from my pile of shame, that I was always too afraid to paint" or something like that.
Proof (the only image I have of her unpainted is this group shot)
Current progress.
I'm away for most of the weekend, so I'll see what comes of it.
If I don't get her done, I do have a backup entry with proof pictures and all. If it comes to that, I'll change my entry on the last day
For the record I am signing out on all challenges as I am leaving this site after my posts are repeatedly being onesidedly reported "for trolling" for just respectfully voicing an opjnion without breaking any rules whatsoever, nor being inciteful' and then removed by mods that apparently think that a few activists reporting a post is enough to do so, instead of actually measuring the post and admitting nothing weird or bad was said at all.
I do not want to be part of a community that does that.
Sorry to see you go Helveine. You always had interesting entries in the comp.

Entries are looking good! We do have the extension, so have all weekend to paint, but get those last highlights down and tufts glued. Reminder that next month is then open round and will start Sunday.
I finally started painting yesterday. I'm going to just try to get one mini done, Azrael, for the competition. Some of the other minis that I planned are missing pieces, which I will replace, but it slows things down when I already have so little time.

Sir, I demand you reconsider that statement. This is the painting competition thread. Here, in this small enclave, others like yourself, and dissimilar to yourself, all come together in peace to engage in a friendly battle of colour theory, dry brushing and an occasional edge highlight.
In this place a bond is formed between us as we each witness, on a monthly basis, the results of our love for painting little plastic figures with sometimes painstaking detail. It is, in other words, a place where what really matters is first and foremost on the minds of those present here; our desire to share our enthusiasm for this hobby with others who will appreciate it.
It is an actual hobby thread, where the people you are engaging with are concerned with the business of painting models; as is just and true and right.
I for one welcome and embrace all fellow enthusiasts.
Eirene from Ancient Bards is completed. Unfortunately I painted her too late in the month and the artistic paints are still a little glossy. I replaced the sword's blade with one made from transparent plastic, because it is supposed to be made of crystal. I also added some leaves on the base, cut with special cutter from a real dried leaf For the next month I have something much more ambitious, what I like the most - a vehicle
Done. Eleven and a half hours before the deadline. I should have procrastinated a bit after all. So much time wasted on being productive for no good reason.

Stay.
Paint.
Endure.
I’m on the road right now, so can’t type up a long answer, but just wanted to reinforce this.
While other parts of the internet can be contentious, we strive to keep this space here in the P&M section (and especially the competition threads) a safe, inclusive, and supportive area. We leave anything past the end of the brush there and just focus on the minis and painting.
I am not a mod, I can’t speak for other sections of the board, or actions outside my own. I am alway sorry to see hobbyists leave. Everyone is welcome in the comp. But life is too short to spend places where you do not feel welcome. For those who feel that this is no longer a place for them I wish nothing but well wishes and hope they find a place where they can be happy.
Geifer. I’m liking the detail you’ve managed to tease out on the face! Also, and this might sound weird, but the bowstring color is actually pretty striking and cool.
I'm going to be cutting it close. The resin continues to resist my efforts to apply paint. More mud splatters required! Hopefully I can complete it late into the night.
Sneaking this in at the last minute not particularly happy with him but this Reaper Liche fits the theme and was done for the competition
Proof
Painted
Finished painting on these two. Crappy phone pic for now whilst waiting for decals to dry. Managed to run out of glue as well so backpacks are still just blu taced on.
I haven't been very active on here recently due to workload in RL, just about managed to get a model painted but would have liked to do a few more things to finish it like heat stress on the barrels, drilling them and the exhausts + some touch ups but this is what I was able to do within the month period, ill take it as a win on getting something done.
Proof, I've had this box for ages now and the dreadnaughts in the lore are pretty old too

Thanks, guys. I'm never quite sure about painting glowy sticks. Lightsabers and energy bolts or strings can't just be adapted to a 3D look unless you go the route of NMM, which isn't my thing. I think I could have tried a bit of a frayed look with a few streaks of pink or purple on the whiter parts to get it a little closer to the original look.
Also, not late. Extension is running. We have until the end of today. Well, actually until tomorrow morning, as I’m not staying up until midnight just to close this.

Slacker
I spent like 13 hours on the road yesterday, driving almost all of it, some in bad weather. Only to end the day getting stuck trying to get up my driveway. Which I spent part of this morning hacking frozen slush off to make it navigable. I am beyond broken right now. Y’all are lucky I got the new comp thread up.

We love ya big man! Take no notice of my insubordination. Haha
By the way, on a serious note, that sounds literally nightmarish! I once got frozen in place and trapped in deepest darkest Wales. It was a small village, nestled in a deep valley between mountains, with one road in and out. There was no hope of escape. I was trapped there for a couple of nights unable to leave … but on the plus side…. I was very young when this happened… and a very sweet local girl took good care of me.
In fact, I ended up very happily trapped in that village. Ah memories.
Sorry to hear the challenges you had Nev. Hope ypu get a good night's sleep!
I got my entry finished just in time. However it's 3.36am and I have to work tomorrow, so I'll post the pictures in... 8 hours? If I counted right, the time difference should be on my side as not to keep the thread open just for my sake...
Thanks guys. It’s not as bad as it sounds; I do the drive 3-4 times a year. Mostly it’s just long (about 12 hours normally). Traffic, construction, and weather adds to it. Could be worse. Read in the news some people were snowed in on the highway. But when my phone tells me the highway is closed right after I pass a semi jackknifed over 2/3rds of the road, and I might want to take a detour, I click on the turn signal and take the exit. The real killer was the snow we got at my house that was frozen into a big chunk, including the plug at the end of the driveway (which as it turns out was just high enough to bottom out my car). Fun times, and winter is just starting.
But I got back in time to put some decals and snow on these guys:
Nothing fancy, just a couple battle brothers from the dawn of time. Didn’t get to finish the dread. He’s like 85% done, but didn’t have it in me to get him across the line. Should be able to finish him by the end of the year, Just got to do a few random bits and final steps.
Sorry to hear the challenges you had Nev. Hope ypu get a good night's sleep!

8 hours should be fine. I plan on formally closing this in roughly 10 hours. It’s 8:45ish here now, and I generally sit down for breakfast and hit the web around 7ish. If you run a little late, don’t worry about it, I can keep the door ajar for you.
