A few months ago I started a craftworld army based on scheme I had pictured for a while, it was an opportunity to paint the new lovely eldar models I’ve been admiring for a long time, use some new paints I had my eye on and build a new army very different from my ORKS and space marines.
The basis for the scheme would be teal/jade armour with vivid pink helmets, both colours I’ve not painted much before. I would paint the rank and file efficiently but to a decent finish, still army painting but going for a higher end finish. Characters and centre pieces would get more attention. I started with a squad of defenders, my favourite unit in the army.
I got the old combat patrol plus wraithguard through someone reselling the magazines on eBay at a decent price. These would be my first units plus a pair of warlocks (my next favourite models).
I used monument hobbies proacryl paints mostly, fallen in love with them in the last few months, they tick all the boxes.
The armour was based with jade, then highlights of mixes with Bright Jade were airbrushed on. Initially I used a dark green oil wash to line the recesses as a shade but switched it to magenta in later units.
The helmets were hot dark pink highlighted with layers of white mixed in. The white desaturated with pink too much so I also mixed in some proacryl fluoro pink to keep it vibrant.
Weapons were just black.
Some quick edge highlight in the brighter colours were added and some pink accents on the bodies.
The gems were quick versions of every gem guide out there.
Automatically Appended Next Post:
The warlocks were next, I still didn’t have basing sorted so the guardians didn’t get based yet.
I used the same colours on the warlocks but the were brush painted. The robes were layered up with glazes of the jade colours, the helmets were also layered up. The would stones on these got more attention but same colours and ideas.
The weapons were painted as crystal prismatic blades. I followed the amazing rogue hobbies guide for it, it was so simple and effective. Link below. Had to match the paints as best I could, didn’t have the all.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJEVU9FQR94
I then decided on a fun lurid set of tufts for the bases.

Next up I painted up a support weapon I’d got, the wraith guard, a wraithlord and the farseer.
All got the same treatment as the guardians. Farseer got a lot more attention in 5e same paints.

Next up wa she half dozen jet bikes and ten warlock on a bike.
I rushed the painting if the bikes and my masking tape pulled off the pink, creating a nice weathered effect. Not what I wanted for his army!
So I tried to mask off the green and repaint the pink and the tape pulled off the green this time.
So learned to not bother masking this stuff and just freehand it. A mate pointed out that my colour scheme resembled a brand of green tea that cherry blossom on the packet. Got me thinking and googling and there were some lovely eldar and tau with cherry blossom on so the warlock got some on his bike.
In reflection I’m happy with the blossom but should have done it a bit smaller or finer. But overall, I like the look and plan on using it on my vehicles and things.

Wow nice work on the Eldar mate! Great colour scheme and love the freehand on the bikes.

Post by: Andykp
Thank you! I think I’m going to use the cherry blossom a bit like the “vines” or thorns on beil-tan vehicles. To break up the big panels a bit.
I’ve some storm guardians on the go now and then an avatar and some fire dragons coming. Thinking about doing the fire dragons in one of the alternate schemes, black armour and orange hats.

A very striking color scheme, I'll add to the list. Looks like the Biel Tan have the Teal Tan to contend with!
In mass, with the color coordinated across everything, it looks even better.

Storm guardians up next. Few pics including some shots of a new play with power weapons. Wanted them to stand out from the more witchy ones.
Think I will put decals on, runes on the helmets and crest thing of the shield jobby, but decided yet, I like the face in the crest and don’t want to cover it yet.

Also had my first game with them, 840 points (classic size) against some traitor guard (usual guard rules, traitor midels).
Got a win and learned a lot, they are tricksy these eldar and trickier to play than my usual ORKS.

Finished the fire dragons, don’t have it in me to freehand the yellow runes on the helmets that I want and the decals are all black so that on hold for now so calling them done. Not happy with the finished look at all but they have been a ton of work and just happy to call them finished for now.

On to some grav tanks now for a “cleanse” after all the glazing on the fire dragons, something big and chonky.
Hate the flimsy bases so have put a screw through the base into the tank with a shim around the outside. The shim locks it all in place when the screw is tightened and it’s Rick solid. Really happy with how it worked out.
The wave serpent is a modern mould of the tank, the falcon is an eBay job of the original 1997 release, got it cheap at £18. Exact same kit but the casting on the original was so much crisper and cleaner than the current version on sale it was crazy.
They don’t need to read e-sign the tanks but new moulds after nearly 30 years are needed badly.

Last thing to do was the tabard, I wanted the avatar rune on it, there is no decal I could find for this, very sad.
My free hand is not good enough for the painting it so I went with a decal that was similar off the decal sheet with some extra bits of another version of the rune, and the swirly tail off a swim hann symbol and added them together, then I noticed two more lines so added them too. 6 pieces in total all stuck on.
Then I painted over it all and tidied it with some black to make the edges sharper. I like this cheating free and am happy with the result. Calling the whole model done too.

I wish I’d kept the weapon hand as a subassembly, and wish I hadn’t bothered keeping all the chest straps as subassemblies.
It was really nice to paint though, I used Fluoro paints through the airbrush as my first steps and it was super simple. Red up to yellow. I watched a lot of videos of it being painted in prep. Luckily there are a lot because it’s a stunning mini.
Working inside out was the key. I painted all the deepest/brightest details first and worked out on the body getting darker.

A good few months off. Was going to paint something other than eldar but finished these off instead. Got the bug again.

Quick Autarch painted up, happy with her armour, first time I’ve painted a character in the green armour and got to spend some time on it, not so happy with the power weapon might repaint it. Was thinking of some simple freehand on the back of the cloak too. Like just a line along the bottom but chickened out, might go back to the too when I’m feeling brave.

"Fiddly to build" seems to be the keyword for a lot of kits these days. I keep looking at the 40 Tech-Thralls I need to build, knowing that the first pose is made up of 13 parts...

They’ve really managed to keep what made the original models and designs so appealing and as you say modernise it. The models that really drew me in were the warlocks, guardians and of course the avatar. But the more I get the more impressed I am, I’m building striking scorpions now and that are so cool. The poses and they have managed to get all the aspects feeling connected but distinct.
The falcon really need a retool, the look is great and still stands up after 30 odd years but the molds are not great. I bought an old falcon on sprue from second edition and built it just after building a new wave serpent. The diffence in finish was crazy, the old kit was so much more crisp and defined.
