Welcome all to the 132nd round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favorite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds.
This topic this month is the Finish It! We will lift the “must start primed/basecoated” limit so people can wrap up projects and clear out stuff from the back of the bench. Or use the time to start and finish the last few models for a project. If you don’t have something that fits, you can also go with minis putting in the final shots into their target, swordsmen delivering a coup de grace, Mortal Kombat fighters performing fatalities, ending duels, climatic battles, or singing nordic psalms.
How To Enter
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You may enter at any time during the month, up to the last minute. We do encourage people to enter early, as to be part of the community, but if you can’t start until the 11th hour, that’s OK.
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting. We are waiving the normal start conditions this month; feel free to use it to wrap up half done minis. But please be sure to post a start picture so we know how much you’ve done.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of February and will end at midnight EST on February 28th. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

This is probably my best shot at finishing Kaboom Girl. I entered her before and the proof shows how far I got before I ran out of steam and switched to another model. I can't even remember how long ago that was.
I do know that not another drop of paint got on the model in the meantime, even though I like the model and want to see it finish. But so far apparently not badly enough. I'll gladly take any extra motivation I can get. Let's hope things go better this time around.

Of the various half-done minis lying around, this one's the best combination of interesting and still near the start of painting:
I put her together back in July 2024 because I don't particularly like the official Jump Lord and wanted to try to do better, but since I don't need a Jump Lord on the tabletop (since I don't like the current Raptors much either, although the upcoming replacements look more promising) there wasn't much pressure to paint her, compared to minis I needed done for games, or other projects with more interesting colours than 'another chaos one'. So let's finish her off now.

2 fold entry: I’ve got a tank and some mostly done assault intercessors that need to be finished. They are actually the secondary part. My primary focus is the Nids. These are the last built/primed/planned tyranids in the pile of shame. I think I’ve got a handful of vintage GSC stuff, maybe a gaunt or two left. I should really dig into it and check. But for the active planned part of the army? This is it. They were started as a 2020 covid project and grew into a healthy swarm. But now it’s time to wrap them up, put them on the back burner, and make room for the Necrons on the bench. Neurotyrant and buddies, 3 Zoes, and 10 devilgaunts. Best 5 of what gets finished will be entered.

Not quite older than me; some of the first models I ever owned, back in the (gulp) late 80s. They have been stripped, reprimed and begun once more. Waagh, and so forth. 5 will be for this, but I'll probably do all 10.

That is some vintage RT Ork lead. I’ve got some of their buddies in a box somewhere, and even a few painted on the shelf. I really should do them up as a painting project some day. Fun batch of guys.

3 finished, 3 needs more painting.
And 4 more, just finished putting in the wires.

My entry for the month will be Dragon Ogres. Purchased back in 2024 with the release of TOW, they have sat half finished for a long while. Time to get them going.
And since snapping that build picture yesterday, here they are primed and ready.

I have yet to try pigment powders. I've barely even given them any thought in the past. My 40k bases are pretty locked in at this point with bit of drybrushing, stippling and a wash before final highlights.
One big problem with this model is that I couldn't decide on how I want my Genestealers to look for thirty years. That stopped me from painting the ones I got over the years and editions of Space Hulk and was not help when I branched out into Genestealer Cults. Indecision on the color scheme was one big issue that stopped me last time around. And... that hasn't even changed yet. I'm hoping for some fresh ideas after letting the model sit for so long.

Give pigment powders a go (crushed cheap colored chalk, or old pastels) be a fun test.
I find it more difficult to land on the basing theme than on the color scheme. Because there can be a lot more wiggle room within a color scheme. Looks like your base theme is set.
Perhaps this will help you with the color scheme. Consider different color schemes for every squads. Doesn't have to be too different, one color for core, and variations for squads.
As an example: Think of an Eldar army with Aspect warriors. Uniformed army with different colored squads.
Its what I ended up doing with my dwarfs
https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/804229.page#11332701
3 different color schemes for 3 different Quarreler units.
It allows me to work squad by squad, not worry about the whole. As long as the bases unify the army it works.

First, a Frostgrave wizard and apprentice, originally started for Sidekicks :

And finally, what I believe to be the last of my unpainted Beastmen:

Half finished is just a phrase. The goal is to use the month to get some otherwise stalled project across the finish line. I would hope people choose projects that will make a good use of the month’s time. If all you need to do it put one dot of color on that takes 5 minutes, I’d prefer you choose a better project, but will not say no/disqualify you for it (as that’s getting close to just submitting finished work to vote farm).
Do what you need to do, paint what you want. Work on that pile of shame.

Paint to whatever level you want. It’s all good.
I didn’t mean to come across to harsh or restrictive. The goal here is to promote and encourage. And we’ve got people at all levels and welcome them.
For the most part if you (generic plural not specific “you”) think something is fine to enter, it probably is. This month is a little odd, as we allow partially finished works to be entered. And to be honest, some people’s rough WIP are better then some of our finished works. So where do you draw the line?
Although if someone wanted to take a fully painted mini and try weathering for the first time, I’d even let that pass. Pushing ourselves if part of the reason we are here.
So whatever you feel is fine. Let your conscience be your guide. Just put the month to good use.

Not entirely sure why I abandoned these part way through before (literally half way through painting the dire wolf), but hopefully can get the mojo to finish these off now! I'm pretty sure I tried (and failed) to paint these in a previous challenge, so it seems appropriate to enter them again. These are the hunters from Primal: The Awakening, very cool minis with plenty of detail. Proof pic:
The girl with the longbow (Mirah) is the closest to done, but still needs plenty of work; the others are in much more primitive states. I don't know if I'll get them all done, but if I can polish off one or two I'll be happy.

JoshInJapan wrote:Those are some big guns! How are you doing the panel lines-- Gundam pens, oil wash, or something else? They're really clean.
Just a Nuln oil wash, but using a “rigger” brush; they’re about 3-4 times longer than a normal brush, so you retain a fine tip, but they hold a lot more liquid, so you can run them down the line. A little bit of touch up to the surrounding paint afterwards. Automatically Appended Next Post: Also, good for rivets, because you can just run the tip of the brush around the rivet and the wash flows out.

It is my son's first model ever (he is 6), so I choose something simple - "cartoon" t-34 tank, manufactured by Meng. It is almost a toy, without small parts and is very sturdy - it survived fall from the table without any damage. We started them some time ago, but they landed on the shelf when the children got bored. But after I told them I will post the models on the contest on the modellers forum, we started to work on them again That is what they looked like at the start of the month (proof picture):

You want them all entered under your name? If they want to enter their own work, you can post for them. Just let me know what name to enter them under. And each one would get the 6 pictures. So halfling84 (6 pictures) // halfling85 (6 pictures) //halfling86 (6 pictures) Or whatever other names you want. The default is normaly tacking a “Jr” on the end of the main account’s name.
Or you can just enter them all as a group yourself. We’re flexible, and supportive of new hobbyists. Whatever works for you.
--
We are over halfway done with the month, so plan accordingly. As a reminder, next month is the start of the new year, with the classic Space Marine theme. Which is not just the official trademarked GW marines, but anything that resembles the genre of fighting guys and gals in space. And probably the reoccurring Eldar revolution that keeps copping up. But if you want to paint one of those, you might have to sing fighting songs on the barricades. I don’t make the rules.
Keep on painting!

No painted mini is for nothing. Each is a victory against the numberless grey mountain of the pile of shame, a chance to improve your skills, and an outlet for artistic expression.
Keep painting, onward to a more colorful future!

So done. These are the last Tyranids planned for the swarm. Not that we might not see more, but the primed pile is empty. And while there are some dregs in the Pile of Shame, they will likely stay there for a while. I painted more then just these guys, but picked a sample of 5. Not pictured is one more termagant w/ fleshborer who is down at the FLGS entered into the free mini of the month competition (which he won) Spoilered for size, but here are all the entries from the Hive Fleet. (Not counting the 2 zoats and Tippy, who were one-off painting projects unrelated to my Tyranid army. As a project this started in the Pandemic in 2020, and ran until now, about 6 years in the making. The flying hive tyrant was the first time I hit the podium here in the challenge, with a 6 way tie for 3rd. From the first test termagant to some 4,750 points of gribbly horrors. Many of which were painted here for the comp, which has helped keep me motivated. -- Running out of month, so get those final touches done and pictures taken. Thanks for the extension Nev, 8 of the 10 veterans are done but they need to be based so it gives me one evening to get them finished and photographed. (I don’t think there is much chance of getting the last two done but I have it a good go!!)

Lookin' good, everyone!
I also appreciate the extension; I almost finished my Xenos Inquisitor's Eldar henchman and got a good start on her sage.
They're not the best things I've ever painted, but they're looking good and they're interesting conversions, so that's gotta count for something

So earlier this year I picked up a model that had been partially built for the Dakka Painting Challenge Bonus Summer Side Quest https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/816614.page. However, I had not finished the rigging and weathering. I did promise I would do that when finished. With the title of this months challenge I figured I would take the days of work to finish the model.
HMCS Chilliwack 1944 1/72 Scale Flower Class Corvette
Finished It!
Cheers,
Captain Brown
PS: If people are curious this the 1/72 scale Revell model kit. It is about three feet long, of the 1000 pieces I used about 450 of them added some third party railings - weapons sites - oerlikon 20mm cannons, and scratch built, kit bashed the rest (the kit was a bit rudimentary...it was released in the 1970s).

So, tried to paint this hen harrier for another painting challenge a month or two ago, and decided to attempt to finish it this month.

Great woke, we still have the rest of the day for an extension.
But it’s March, and you know what that means:
All right, sweethearts, you're a team and there's nothin' to worry about. We come here, and we gonna conquer, and we gonna kick some, is that understood? That's what we gonna do, sweethearts, we are going to go and get some. All right, people, on the ready line!

I didn't manage to finish as much as I wanted but I'm still happy with this month's progress. Only the 3 Knights and a few details on the Archregent left to have the Spearhead ready.
I could probably finish the Archregent today but I don't want to rush him.
This month's progress
And my entry for this month

Alas, I could not get the beast finished on time. Hell, I'm not even close.
Oh well. I might as well submit it. But at least progress has been made. There are lots of half painted pieces floating through the house and maybe I'll have this finished before another year rolls around.

@Mr Nobody, I feel your pain! The Tau’nar was just too much for a single month, even in a half finished state, but I’ve made some decent progress, so hopefully I’ll get it finished in a few weeks. Here’s as far as I got:
To everyone else, some fantastic work dropping in the thread, I look forward to voting!

That's an achievement in itself, and hopefully what the challenge can help people with, you made good progress on an epic model.
I had to call time on mine, there are so many bits to this kit I just couldn't finish them all but still happy with how much I got done.
My original fortified manor now has a chapel with a courtyard and lots of field walls, I came into an unexpected issue because there's so much of it now it was quite hard to take photos of it. The Tower was the part that had been already painted.

The white flag waves for me once again...
My motivation this year has been absolutely zilch, and I don't know why.

Was like that for me last year. I know how it is. I ended up totally sidetracked by work and going fishing in the summer and autumn. I will probably hardly enter during the summer myself as I am focused on my fishing goals as soon as the good weather arrives! I think I’m discovering modeling and painting is very much a cold weather hobby for me. I will try to get something done each month but I know productivity will absolutely decline varying on season now.

P.S. That ship is stunning Captain Brown. Well done on completing the project… what an epic result! Love it!
Thank you XvArcanevX. Although I think yours fits better, especially with the dakkadakka vibe.
I took some photos with a lighter background as the black background hid all that painful to string rigging. I thought I was pretty smart pre-building some brass to connect the ends in several places...until I discovered that vents, canvas, pipes, Carley floats, etc. had effectively hidden them from access with my tweezers. Several parts had to be snapped off (with many unkind words spoken) and re-installed after the lines were run.
Actually the purple is not much better...I just do not have a white sheet to use (borrowing one from a bed may result in me being keelhauled by Mrs. Captain Brown...even though I am the one who fits them after washing).
Cheers,
CB

It’s an epic build… good job on the white background for the pic.. that rigging brings it even more to life. It’s honestly a really impressive build… so much work goes into those things. I’ve not built a ship yet but want to… in fact, my absolute dream build and ambition modeling wise is to get access to a large scale model of the Orca from Jaws. Something in resin or plastic that I can construct and weather and paint like the real thing. It truly would represent the pinnacle for me … sadly, I can’t locate such a model at this time.
One day…
