Haha thanks Nerdy ! In truth I do all my work at the end of a long day with some wine and there isn’t a straight line in it !!!!
Also, I like how you top end painters seem to find plasticard daunting, it’s actually turbo easier than painting a good, realistic human face !
Which you do with apparent ease !!!

I have more or less finished the construction of the Death Guard Spartan. It took a while but I reckon once I clean it up a bit and fill some gap with a bit of liquid greenstuff she’s good to go !

Looks like a good job.
I do have issues with the hinges on the outside of the tracks, but I realise it's a done thing with these models. Something I'd have to personally "fix" though.

Thanks Damo, all it needs now is a little bit of liquid greenstuff to blend all the plasticard and greenstuff together and it’s a good un. I’ll probably make a start some time this year !

Thanks Doc, I’d not noticed the hinge before but now I look it’s actually the wrong way round ! Ergghhh can’t be unseen !
Anyhow I had some parts lying around so I made another thing, needs more greenstuff but it’s kinda there, it’s a Blight plague thing gun.
Please no clever observations about recoil. It just can because chaos

Sorry. It is how it is on old Landraiders, and I'm sure many like the look. Don't know why they were done that way in the first place.
I'd have to switch the tracks around or (and I have thought of this in the past) add treads to the tracks for the tank to ride on and lift the hinges away from the surface. I've thought of as simple as a single rectangle of plasticard (probably 1.5mm) that sticks out at 90 o to the track, stuck on the flats... all the way up to adding another layer of flat treads that hide the hinges; sitting flush together on the ground but splitting apart as it curves over the wheels at each end.
It's a lot of work even at it's simplest. But that's how I roll.
Still, nice work on the new tank.
I'll refrain from making any "useful" observations.
I don't actually have any.

All good points Doc, but a helleva lot of work for something that I'm assuming Little H will either drop or cram into a case that it blatantly won't fit in to !
To be honest I do kinda like the old school look, I remember them coming out in the late 80's and have always had a soft spot for them, if only they were sized to actually carry what the rules said they could !
I suspect they were done that way, as with so many things in sci-fi and fantasy games, because the designers don't go for real engineering just rule of cool. ALA the weapon on my last vehicle, no room for recoil or to load it !

Seems like an age since I got some time to hobby, well last night I decided to paint some Tau vehicles Little H wanted for a small force he started. I got them cheaply off eBay and they were seriously badly glued up with superglue, the poor kid who had them must’ve stuck himself to them 10 times if the gluey fingerprints are anything to go by.
Anyhow, I got them done in a night and an hour this morning, nice and quick tabletop stuff but looks ok I reckon, let me know your thoughts as I’ve never painted Tau before

Yes roll the dice man! :-) best way to do it! makes me remember a book I read years ago called the Diceman.
The Dice Man is a novel published in 1971 by George Cockcroft under the pen name Luke Rhinehart and tells the story of a psychiatrist who begins making life decisions based on the casting of dice. Cockcroft wrote the book based on his own experiences of using dice to make decisions while studying psychology.

Yeah, I like the combination of the hunched pose and the huge powerfist.
69676
Post by: Big H
Knightly , Nerdy, Doc : thanks very much for stopping by and commenting !
The pose came about as pure fluke, mainly because GW seems unable to sculpt people standing up straight or without squatting, anyway by using a MadRobot power fist and dropping it down the shoulder everso slightly he does indeed look tired, and or old or both. The choice of head helps that look too, he went thru about 10 head swaps before I went firm.
I’m having him as the senior officer contrasting with some others that will be more upright.
What about the two dudes with sword and shield ? Could they pass as Crusaders for an Inquisitor ?

Spent the weekend chilling out and occasionally putting paint on the chaos marauders thingymabobs, these will be quite simple blocks of colour and some basic shading just to get them on the table.

Ok so I got the Bloodthingymarauders finished. I had initially persuaded Little H do do this unit , so he assembled them, primed them black and base coated everything brown, then forgot about them. This left me with a unit to paint which really was a pain in the ass in the beginning but towards the end I kinda warmed up to them. They really are nice sculpts and have tons of details. Right now I might do a small unit of them later on my preferred white primer and spend a bit of time on them.
I mostly rushed thru this lot but I don’t think they came out too bad, let me know what you think !

I got some holiday and came home for a week, clearly that means I’d have to take Little H to Warhammer World and just as clearly I’d have to drop for a Necromunda boxed set !
Also went to the exhibition of the painted minis, good to see some of the old stuff I had as a kid and to see the skill level of the mini painters. Without being overly arrogant I’m pretty sure I can hold my own with my vehicles and they were a similar quality but the figures were absolutely phenomenal, particularly like the standard of the Lord of the Rings stuff, I literally cannot see those little guys
Anyhow had a couple of hours painting with Little H, he’s working on some Eldar jet bike and a Roboute Guilliman and I started some random Terminators Little H started months ago

Thanks Gits, I was hesitant to use the mauve colour, it was actually pink that I darkened with blue and a dab of brown as I had run out of red !
I got the terminators finished today, they turned out quite nice, I did the airbrush work with out masking up the minis and there are some really small areas of over spray, but it mostly looks intended

Gitsplitta wrote:Nice work Big H. I like the contrast between the brightly colored figures and the bare, cracked earth below them.
Thanks Gits, the cracked earth is Little H's go to basing medium, because he basically has to do nothing ! I just jazzed it up with painting the base dark brown first and adding some purple and flesh shade wash in patches, then I light dry brush.

Thanks mate , I have quite a few different types for an Inquisitorial unit made so thought I’d better make a start with some paint !
So here’s a pic of my latest WIP, I’m finding these tricky as my usual style is to block in the basic colour then wash or glaze till it looks about done, unfortunately this is not the best way of doing “candied” armour and it’s made the surface a bit murky, maybe some gloss varnish will cure it once I get home ?

Hmm if you think you've dulled the armour down too much then yea it might work.
Last time I tried that technique I got all the shading over a very bright metallic layer before applying the red, then just adding scratches at the end.

I think whalemusic meant that you can't see the ninjas; I only approximate that there are ninjas in the picture based on the ninja-shaped holes in the air where something must be.....

Thanks for commenting Fango ! The fantasy stuff made a change, tho there is still plenty left on Little H's side of the painting table !

Boo....you put a head on him.
Looks good, and the glow works for me. I've never managed to get glows or osl effects to look even remotely right, so wouldn't be able to give any tips anyway. It looks like a subdued glow to me, and I wouldn't expect a bright source from the back of the armour.

Hi MonkeyTroll, yeah , my lad would never forgive me if I turned his Inquisitor undead !
OSL and glow effects are tricky but you can cheat a bit with bright coloured paints, I think it just looks like I missed out a shade or two between the red and the pale yellow, which is weird cos there definitely was some orange in there somewhere ! But thanks for your comment , appreciate it !

I got the zombies 90% done, but I’m unsure what to do with the respirator lenses? I’m not convinced my normal “go to” blue glow would work in this instance, what do you think Dakka ?
The first three are Mantic zombies I got out of curiosity and used them to experiment with colours, using blue and purple washes to shade the green.
The PuppetsWar zombies I really enjoyed painting, they aren’t as dark in real life , I was having problems with the light.
Let me know what you think Dakka !!

I don’t have any spare models to start a tutorial from scratch but I can run through the process if you like Nerdy ? I’m sure you’ll get it ! Automatically Appended Next Post: So, if Dakka is interested, this is my "Nazi Nurgle Zombie" Recipe.
I've done variations of this process on nearly all the Traitor Guard I painted but will most likely never use for anything ! I use a mix of manufactures for paint so you will need to experiment !
1. Prime black then zenithal white. I like more white than black as I paint in very thin layers, to be honest they are almost washes.
2. Block out all the major colours and the details, the grime/ goo / blood needs to be on top of these colours, so you need to be at your basic finish level before applying the gunge.
The skin tone needs to be as light a shade as you can, I used an ancient GW Rotting Flesh base highlighted with a 50/50 mix of pure white / Rotting Flesh. The flesh I hardly thinned so as to cover a lot of the black primer areas , otherwise it will go way too dark.
3. I then lined all the colour blocks with Seraphim Sepia wash.
4. I made up some purple paint from Revell AquaColour Blue and Red, thinned it right out and used it to line certain areas, mostly eyes and guts, it works well as bruising and general rot, but don't go crazy yet. This colour wash it also great for staining the uniform in certain places along with thinned Vallejo Burnt Umber, it shows where the goo has soaked through the fabric, I put it around wounds , the crotch and to add general shading here and there. Vertical streaks look good coming out of wounds, across equipment , into boots , the floor etc.
5. More lining alternating using GW Carroburg Crimson and Druchii Violet and thinned Vallejo Burnt Umber. You can do small dots as well to look like drips etc.
6. When you are happy use Tamiya Clear Red, thinned and adding various different amounts of the purple you made earlier or Burnt umber to taste, apply over all the wounds , bullet holes, leaking out of eyes / crevices/ mouths till you are happy !
I use a small plastic pallet, which allows me to keep a small reservoir of colours and keep mixing different shades as I go.
For boils I use a similar colour palette, I paint them yellow or white first then go in with Druchii Violet then the Tamiya Clear Red mix.
Hope this was useful !

Hi monkeytroll ! Yes the large wolf rider is all Little H, I gave him tuition as he went but it’s all his, looks ok I reckon !
Meer_Cat wrote:Really like that green patina power color you do- the lightning claws, the power swords- very different, very eye-catching and very well done!
That’s MeerCat ! It’s really simple and quick so Little H doesn’t have to do endless highlights, simply base the area to glow white and allow to thoroughly dry, then mix a little dark blue into Tamiya Clear Green, thin it down quite a lot and apply like a wash. This is usually enough for my teenage lad ! Simples !
Today I mostly did riveting , it’s not as interesting as it sounds. These Space Hulk Zoneamunda boards have been going on forever and it felt good to get a bit done. It was made easier with the half round nail art beads that GLUE WITH NORMAL PLASTIC GLUE ! It’s So so simple not having to mess with cyanoacrylate.
I got the eBay link from off Dakka if I could only remember where

With Little H’s new interest in KillTeam and Necromunda , I kinda remembered a whole load of stuff I started years ago for Space Zone Hulk Mortallis. So this week I insisted on digging out the cupboard under the stairs, and quite frankly “found “ a ton of not finished stuff !
So I set to, and left a note on the door, “Gone Rivetting”
Still WIP but a lot closer to getting primed.
Still to Do: The blue tubes will get gantries on them once I get some paint in the nooks and crannies, a little Control station with some screens and buttons on a desk where the figures are stood and a Gakton of wire and pipes and then it’s to paint!
Thanks for stopping by !

Loving those damaged tiles with the conduits showing through
With regards to power flow, I'd say there should be a mix, biased towards non-functional. Most of the lights have been damaged, power lines have been cut, broken or diverted, some doors are operational, some jammed open. That should work for the under-hive and a space hulk in my mind.

Your Tau force is looking awesome! I got that same stencil to use on a Tehnolog battle-droid thing (it really looks like one of the killer machines in Terminator 3 movie), but there was so much detail molded onto the piece that I figured it wouldn't look good to airbrush it.

I tried a cheap laser cut MDF stencil but it really didn't work unless the area was absolutely pure flat and smooth. These Tau I used 2 different kinds of stencil, the larger mech uses a vinyl stencil with a sticky back, it's fits the model contours really really well, the smaller mecha all use a smaller hexagon on vinyl but without the sticky back, it's workable if you can pinch the stencil tight or use blu- tac to hold it but the edges can be a bit soft.
Have a go mate !

I had a go at some nurgle zombies using the contrast paint, I’ve used the style of painting for a while using just thinned paint so was interested how they performed, and to be honest I quite liked them. So the zombies were done really fast for me , 3 days to assemble, prime and paint.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting Gits yes, it seems to suit my "bluff it and see what happens" style of painting

Ja, tie it in with the tattered look, as Nerdy says.
Good job.

Thanks Doc. That’s it decided then, tattered it will be when I can get myself to green stuff again !
Obliterators are on hold for a bit as they were swallowing too much time.
Some current work in progress, let me know what you think !

Did the lenses with Tamiya Amber clear cote as I’m bad at painted lenses and I’m happy enough.
Let me know what you think !

You are of course, correct , I did end up using the bases again, removing the cork/ superglue/ resin water effect was a drama howerer !

One of the most amazing tank paint jobs I have seen. whole tank looks free handed
Love how decals just blend into the tank seamlessly

Post by: Big H
Thanks mothsniper !
Not my skill as such, more to do with applying the decals on gloss varnish, applying decal solvent and then a coat of Matt varnish.
Kinda procedural rather than artistic but looks the part !

Me and Little H had a monster finishing off session (for us! )
Little H is getting much more confident at painting , just not planing ! and I’m pleased the Nugle stuff could finally qualify as finished after I made a total mess of there swamp bases and had to pull them apart and redo them, no swamp this time tho !!!

What’s that Big H ? Start another conversion of an eBay save into another variant you could just have easily bought off the shelf, take hours and hours doing so, and probably will sit on a shelf and won’t ever get used When it’s done ???
I’m in you handsome bastard !
Can you tell what it will be ?

Hey thanks for stopping by and commenting Gits !
So the landspeeder guessing game didn’t get too many answers, but no dramas as I really don’t know what Mark it is anyway !
I’m just doing a bit of Blutac posing on the crew and found there isn’t room to fit them with backpacks. So, do I fit tubes and pipes like the GW rhino crew model Or green stuff nurgle style them into the seats???
Either way will be more awkward to paint due to being in the vehicle ?
Any body else do it different? What option would you go for ?

I am sorry for being AWOL. Your solution for the crew looks perfect to me. Though I think I would maybe have worked out a way for the pipes to come to a panel, so the crew can be removed for painting. Bloody difficult in the space you have though.
I have no idea what varient it is. But I like it.
Going back a bit further, the tanks and the flyers are amazing. The troops all look fantastic, but that samaritan is fantastic.

Thanks dude, to be fair I looked at your Nurgle stuff and face palmed myself ! It’s awesome! Exactly how the 1980’s or 90’s would’ve been if we could paint then !!!

If I’d planned it I should have glued the Pipes to a separate plate. Bang on a good idea but I made it hard

Thanks for the comment Gits ! Unfortunately Little H is a lazy ass teenager and it’s taken god knows how long to persuade him to paint , never mind base , never mind drill gun barrels, but small steps! He like converting so maybe that my “in” !
Little H was on fire tonight , plasma squad done !

Hey that’s for commenting Gwyn ! He’s 18 now but has always been fairly good, just his interest to paint was lacking, too happy to play with grey plastic ! Or get me to paint for him !
Tonight Little H is painting random Tyranids and I got three Death Guards jet bike pilots finished. It feel good to get them done , they have been hanging around for ever !
As usual questions comments criticisms are welcome !

Hey thanks Gits ! It’s just getting the basics down then lots of oils and airbrushed Contrast paints !
Small update today: Little H had a real tag team event on the Banner dude. I sprayed the Armour, little H filled in details, I applied decals and did the banner (as Little H hadn’t done one before- teenager logic) then Little H finished the highlights on the silver and white as my aging eyesight and dicky bladder wasn’t good enough
As always comments and criticism welcome !

I really like that color scheme. I wonder if the bases aren't a little too close to the color of the nids though... I think you're losing some impact there.

That’s a really good point and I agree , you are correct !
However I was trying to match the homemade space hulk / zone mortalis boards I made and that was the colours
Here they are on a board to see how they match, I will get the wall done soon
