I’ve still got some LI buildings on sprue. Reckon I’ll much about with them in the morning, before Sir Floofington Brain-Fart arrives.
And that’s the existing buildings done in their base colours. Just the wash to go.

Day 244
And that’s my assembled terrain done and dusted. Took advantage of Nehploof having a snooze in the hall.
Really enjoyed painting these, and as well as finishing off the set I have? I will be adding a second in due course. And maybe a third in the more distant future, to ensure Titans have something to hide behind.

What do you think of the Manufactorum Imperialis kit, Doc?
8725
Post by: Mad Doc Grotsnik
Haven’t got that one yet. But, with the discounted set I am considering it. Because just as building dimension variety matters for more engaging games, so does a range of looks and themes to said terrain.
But, I need to sort out the Civitas Ruins as well, as I’ve two boxes of those to do, which have had a single wrecked Munitorum Shipping Crate trimmed out.

Day 245
Pup sitting is exhausting, and didn’t get my usual weekend lie-in. But used up the remains of the Spires Sprues, and knocked out a most interestingly shaped single story building. Because even simple geometric shapes can be made a little more interesting.
A a lovely big spired building, using up the last of the tall walls.
Just totted up the remaining single floor bits, and I’ve enough to do a second building in the style seen in the first pic. From there it’s just the standard ones to go.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Hmm.
Gonna have to switch back to my Necromunda terrain. For not only am I out of plastic glue (so I can’t start on the LI Ruins), but I think I just ran out of Zandri Dust spray.
Payday is Wednesday, so I’ve a shopping list to be going on with. Might have to go to Canterbury or Ashford though, as FLGS’ supply of paint and glue is…spotty. Automatically Appended Next Post: I have indeed run out of Zandri Dust.
Knickers.

Day 246
Just managed to squeeze out enough from the Zandri Dust to finish the two larger buildings I built over the weekend, and they’ve had their Wraithbone.
So looks like I’m set to do the noodly details on those tonight, and finish washing them tomorrow, neatly carrying me over to payday, when I can replenish my supplies.

Post by: Dysartes
On the upside, Doc, Zandri Dust is apparently still available in a can.
Enjoying painting the buildings so far?
8725
Post by: Mad Doc Grotsnik
Yeah man. They’re not as difficult as they first looked, and now I’m used to the kit it’s enjoyable to play with. Automatically Appended Next Post: Think that’s it for today. Time has gotten away from me. But still likely to finish them tomorrow.
Noodlies and Greeblies on lunch break, wash after work.

That’s Numberwang!

Who wants a Groupshot? You want a Group shot!
So have two. First a pic of the stuff I’ve painted. Second the same stuff, plus the stuff that’s still to go, on the Magic Box O’Stuff.
Magic Box O’Stuff measures 4’ x 2’, so should give you some idea of table coverage from a single box.
I reckon the two boxes of ruins will help pad it out (and provide a decent amount of scatter terrain to make it more interesting), then a big box of the Industrial stuff to round it all out.
2
8725
Post by: Mad Doc Grotsnik
Also built the first ruin.
As it’s not terribly tall, and to make larger ruins you’d want to combine this set with the Civitas? I think I might be lazy, and just scratch build for ruins representing buildings knacked during the battle.
I figure trace round the outline of a building base onto plastic card, cut it out. Thin layer of texture paint, tiny stones and random spares from the two building kits out to do the job?

Sounds like a good plan. Use the pretty LI ruins for structures blasted before the battle.
8725

Yarp. Plus it means I can put the scatter terrain from the ruins sets to much better use filling in those based custom ruins.

Partial shopping success. Zandri Dust procured so the painting can continue.
But drew a blank locally on the rest, so placed an online order which should arrive tomorrow.

What was the rest intended to be this time, Doc?
8725
Post by: Mad Doc Grotsnik
28mm Mechanicum Battlegroup (ordered, should be here tomorrow)
2 x plastic glue (ordered, should be here tomorrow)
1 x 28mm Thanatar - which I’m yet to source. But to be honest? Can, and probably should, wait.
Once the Mechanicum set is here, on Friday I’ll aim for another One Man, One Kit, One Day (OMOKOB!) self challenge on the Thallaxi. Automatically Appended Next Post: Day 248

Day 249
New toys!!!
Mechanicum Battleforce just arrived. And as I’m a good boy, I’m gonna kick off with the Tech Thralls in terms of building. And the Archmagos Prime I bought yesterday, on account I now also have glue.
Thanks, Firestorm Games!
Archmagos was an absolute chore to assemble. The sockets are shallow, the cables flimsy, and the instructions dreadfully unclear. To the point I’ve left off most of the cables.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Also bought a Thanatar, as my FLGS had a restock.
2
8725
Post by: Mad Doc Grotsnik
And some Tech Thralls assembled. Much less frustrating, but the instructions for models 3 and 4 (from the left) aren’t great.
Got there in the end though. Also some options (left arms interchangeable, face plates interchangeable, and a leg option for one)
Second lot went much smoother, now I’ve figured out how those troublesome two should be put together (and it’s gluing them to the torso, not each other.)

Hey, check it out. A few hours later, and I’ve assembled a whole….60 points of models *sobbing increases*

And I’ve finished assembling the Tech Thralls.
Once the Thanatar is painted, think I might build the Triaros.

Trying to decide what I want to do today. Got a few more LI buildings to finish painting, but also keen to get the Triaros built.

Maybe make some progress on the buildings, then reward yourself with some Triaros build?

Post by: Mad Doc Grotsnik
There. I ruined it.
lol.
This is the first set from my first or two boxes, and includes the not shown larger building I built the other day.
Between the sets I’m fairly sure I should end up with enough to reasonably fill a 6x4 board.

Day 252
Moving forward with the last of my LI Buildings. Basically made from odds and ends left over from the main build, but bring some needed size variety.
Just the copper to go, then the wash. Oh, and paint the rooftops, which I should really do next.
And done. All done.

I'm really loving your terrain paint-ups. It's similar in color profile to what I want to do, although since my armies are all Prospero related, I have to find a way to incorporate a lot of pyramids...
Regardless, the cathedral looking building and different layouts are providing many ideas!

Never said I was a good influence Automatically Appended Next Post: And as we enter the last dregs of the year, I’m now wondering how best to do a retrospective of everything I’ve built and painted this year.
I don’t have a large enough raised surface, and frankly I’m too old to be messing about on the carpet, no to mention the higher risk of breakages down there.
I think I’ll cabinet everything I can, do a video and upload it to YouTube.
And if I can get clever? Soundtrack it, maybe with some Tenpole Tudor. Or that song from Rocky.

It’s a honking great powered ram. Fnarr Fnarr!
Bit of an odd fish on the battlefield though. It can carry Thallaxi, but relatively few or loads of Tech-Thralls. And whilst armed, it’s almost entirely anti-infantry. Though the Mauler Bolt Cannons do have Pinning.
The ram is quite nice though, as it’s a proper weapon in its own right.

I would second that! The Triaros needs to be bright yellow to match the single cover. And no, I will not be doing that to mine either, even though I do occasionaly play the venga bus to rooms full of goths
As a model, it does look stunning
8725
Post by: Mad Doc Grotsnik
Having built one of everything in the current plastic range, apart from the Arch Magos I’d say the Mechanicum range is the best GW has ever produced.
The kits go together beautifully, there are no awkward gate channels, and basically no mould lines at all.
That I find the finished products very aesthetically pleasing is just cream on the cake.
Bring on the next wave. Cash is waiting.

Day 256
And from the unfathomable, unknowable, unrepentant depths of the Magic Box O’Stuff?
Something a little bit different. For it is Halloween, which means I paint something spooooooooooky.
Lauka Vai, Mother of Nightmares.
Had her for yonks, pretty much since release day. Quick dusting off and a skoosh or four of Grey Seer, and I’m set for an evening of spooky, sloppy, contrasty brushwork.
The first model I’ll have painted this year just for the hell of it.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Well, that’s a good start. Went to touch up the Grey Seer.
Managed to grab the Wraithbone instead.
But hey ho, should still turn out ok.

Paler colour is Akhelian Green thinned with Contrast Medium
Wet blended into tbe wings with Terradon Turqoise, again thinned with Contrast Medium.

Will leave it to dry, and apply more Space Woof to darken.

Kinda slowing down a bit now my main projects are mostly done.
But, I guess the main thing is my backlog has been seriously tackled, with the big big projects (Heresy and LI) completely cleared out.
Just need to finish off the LI ruins, and I guess for the rest of the year? I’ll do Necromunda terrain, hoping to kick off a campaign locally in the new year.
8725
Post by: Mad Doc Grotsnik
Speaking of which.
First box of Ruins done.
You get quite a lot in that one box. Random scatter terrain will be incorporated into “footprint” ruins for the intact buildings, so I can switch them out during games as a when they get demolished.
1
104637
Post by: Maréchal des Logis Walter
Oh yes, evolutive terrain, that's hella neat! Never got enough terrain to actually do that so I guess everyone of my games started after a preliminary bombardment to end the world lol
8725
Post by: Mad Doc Grotsnik
It’s kinda necessary for LI, as destroying buildings can pay dividends in game - though it’s no simple task.
It’s definitely not cost effective to use the Ruins set to make them though. Those sets I view as Standard Terrain. For swapping out? Footprint Base with interesting rubble is the way forward.
Should also mention the Ruins Sprues leave you with a variety of odds and ends with which to jazz up said Footprint Base ruins.
8725
Post by: Mad Doc Grotsnik
Nearly done assembling the ruins. Second box, first set done.
Second set to follow, which has fewer “bitty” bits.
All built. Pretty decent collection for a spend of around £160.00* investment.
*after discount.

104637
Post by: Maréchal des Logis Walter
Still, that's a lot of money!
8725
Post by: Mad Doc Grotsnik
True, but as it’s gonna last a long time, it’s a pretty worthy investment. Certainly even if I end up chopping and changing armies? It’ll still be the same terrain being fought over.
21358
Post by: Dysartes
How large a table do you think that terrain would make for reasonable cover, Doc?
8725
Post by: Mad Doc Grotsnik
Tricky to say. I think it’s plenty for a 4x4 board. 6x4? Depends. It might be a wee bit sparse.
I do have the Moon Base cardboard board for 40K, which whilst not 6x4 (it’s 5.5 x 3.7) should offer a clearer picture.
I’ll sort a pic of that out after work, as clearing sufficient space means moving the Magic Box O’Stuff out the way, and that bugger is solid Walnut Wood, so quite incredibly heavy (as I learnt humping it up three flights of stairs in my old flat)
Might even decorate it with some LI units, give a clearer picture.

Currently deciding, as I’m yet to put brush to model.

We’re now a mere 9 days from the end of the year.
My project was bold. My project was ambitious. And life has its ways of kicking us in the fork.
I’ll be honest? The grand plan of 365 days of hobby just didn’t happen. I have my reasons, I’ll let you decide if they’re excuses.
Yet despite the failure? I’ve painted way, way more in (hold on, when did Dad die…11 July) six and a bit month of “at least a wee bit everyday”. And as a result? My Epic and 28mm scale armies aren’t just painted, but based. No the good based.
So I’m gonna claim this as a proper success.
Maybe tune in next year for some kind of paint related nonsense.
