I know this has been answered before but I could not find the thread.  Can an assault cannon's rending work on the living metal of a Necron monolith?  I don't think the rending will work but I want to be sure.

While on the rending topic, necron models can still make their regular WBB roll after killed by an assault cannon's rend, correct?

Thanks in advance,

Darrian

I am not familiar with the strength of an assault cannon but if it is less than 8 it cannot touch a 'lith. It is the weapons un modified strength directly against armour 14. In the case of WBB unless its a strength 8 or higher weapon a standard WBB is allowed. Unfortunatley in cases such as this the problem is resolved usually by an "impartial" observer with less of a grasp of the rules than a lemming has to the cliff it just walked off (god i hate that game.) resulting in 2 anhilated, 1exploded, 3 destroyed, 2 immobalised and several other nasty things when it gets assaulted by ork tankbustaz!!!

still, my fault for dropping it right next to them.

no rending does not work against a lith

the only thing that does is the assassins round

necrons get a wbb back roll from an ac that hits on a 6 its not double toughness they just dont get the save before they fall

The confusion is often due to the fact that necrons don't get a WBB if they are killed by a CC rending attack. But rules clearly specify that only CC attacks that don't allow AS prevent a WBB, thus allowing a WBB after an AC's rending hit.

As for the monolith, the AC's strength being less than 8, it cannot hurt the monolith in any way.

I've seen it played the other way but you're right rending shouldn't work on living metal.

However, I have heard an argument for tank hunters working against living metal.

What's the argument for Tank Hunters working? The Necron FAQ specifically says that "...no bonuses for multiple Talos attacks, tank-hunter veteran skills, etc."

I believe the reason Tank Hunter works is because it's a skill of the shooter, not the ability or effect of a weapon. A tank hunter with an AC (let's say it could actually effect the Monolith) would hit it and Str 6 + 1 for tank hunter +D6 armor pen, but nothing else.

Oh, I didnt' read that. That's a stupid rule. Tank Hunters should be able to get that +1 Bonus. It's not an effect or an ability of the weapon...it's fargin skill.

It's may not be an effect of the weapon but it is the firer exploiting a weakness in the vehicles design.
The monolith has no weaknesses.

*waits for burnthexenos to show up with an assertion that his assault cannons should be able to hurt a monolith, because Mom gave him a permission slip*

As a rule of thumb, the designers do not hide "easter eggs" in the rules. If clever reading is required to unlock some sort of hidden option, then it is most likely the result of wishful thinking.

Its funny you shoudl say that, because I dont play any necron players unless they say they dont get WBB from my assault cannons rending hits.

Why? Because its silyl that a rending attack in CC doesn't allow WBB, but the same thing from range does!

I also believe assault cannons can harm the monolith, because ortherwise my army has no way of killing it!

But I mostly refuse to play necrons anyway, expecially if they have a monolith, so this rarely comes up.

How many total games have you actually played? Just wondering.

Thinking very few, since you refuse to play so many...

Sorry, I forgot. It's silly to read and obey the rules, or expect your opponents to do the same. Especially when the rules clearly say that the only time Necrons are denied a WBB roll from shooting is when they are hit with a weapon that's double the toughness.

Got any other ridiculous thoughts that fail to add anything of value to this discussion?

Actually, I have read the rules. They specifically say assault cannons do work against monoliths, and deny necrons a WBB. (page 38, after the rule saying 6 dreadnoughts is illegal).

It is silyl to play by the RAW when they dont make sense, so I added soem more rules to benefit my army and to fit with the fluff, otherwise my army cant harm the monolith at all!

Yeah, we've just been discussing the Necron FAQ over in our local forum and I have to agree. This is not only stupid it also contradicts what the FAQ has just said.

The +1S is not an extra die. It is not a doubling of any kind. Nor is it bonus penetration. Those are the three things the FAQ bans, so why is it illegal.

Although, of course, this still doesn't answer the question of Meltabombs. Their 2d6 AP is standard. It isn't ever doubled, nor is either die an 'extra', nor is there any bonus penetration. So Meltabombs still work against a Monolith. Or am I wrong?

page 38 of what?  Last time I checked, Living Metal only allowed 1d6 for penetrating rolls and and WBB is only affected by CC rending.

If we don't play the RAW because "they dont make sense" and start adding "soem more rules to benefit my army" what's to say that I think since the Monolith is the Necron's ONLY vehicle it doesn't make sense for it to only move 6".  It should be able to move 12" like the other tanks thus being able to benefit from SMF and counter all those SM armies carrying 30+ AC.  Give me a break.......

The RAW are there for all us to play from a common rule base.  Yes, many of those same rules have issues (some have loop-holes) but it is what it is.  We can't just go making up rules because we feel like it or don't like it.

@The great Avatar, You would probably be better off if you just ignore burnthexenos, replying to his illogical posts is like "feeding the troll" Sadly, Dakka seems to always have at least one resident troll at any given time and I think this guy is the current one.

A new day, a new time zone.

Actually, I think he's the same one we've always had. It's just that he keeps getting his accounts banned, so he makes a new one.  He just happens to be amusing enough that the mods have never bothered to IP ban him.

You see, you never actually have to read a post by burnthexenos, because he always says the same thing: "If I'm not cheating, I'm not playing."

"-Nonsense, the Inquisitor and his retinue are our hounoured guests, of course we should invite them to celebrate Four-armed Emperor-day with us..."

Page 38 of the rulebook states that the assault cannons rending ability works against a monolith, bottom of the page, after the rule saying that 6 dreadnoughts is illegal.

I think land speeders, as the space marines only skimmer, should be AV11 all round, so they dont get harmed by bolters.

But if AC dont work against monliths, I cant harm it! So it makes sense that ACs work against monoliths.

I am not making up rules. They are in my rulebook, page 38!!

I have only ever had one account on here.

Such a sad sad troll. I wonder where it all went so terribly wrong for our troll? Probably when he got banned from all the local game stores and even the local GW store wouldn't let him "hang around." This is probably his last connection to the gaming community.

So sad.

Well I guess that begs the question, have you been to any game stores? If so, do you act out at them like you do here? If not, why not?

Are you proud of being banned from websites?

Yes, I regularly play in GW stores (not against falcons or monoliths though).

Getting banned from those websites was fun! The people were so funny when they were wound up!

I'm sure he has. After all, he's got to perfect his game.

I'm surprised at how calm burnthexenos appears to be. I wouldn't be surprised if he actually doesn't use the cheats he says he does, and is just trying to anger people. However, he'll probably reply to my comment with something along the lines of his cheating being completely genuine. Why would anyone let you make up rules, anyway? I think burnthexenos should start a thread where he lists every rule he's ever invented. Burnthexenos, I really hope you'll do that, it would also show us the maximum bandwidth dakka has.

Wait am I missing something in this conversation? pg. 38 in the rule book describes WHO CAN FIGHT IN CLOSE COMBAT and doesn?t say anything about dreadnoughts or monoliths, but then I guess I'm just an incompetent newbie....

And Beside burnthexenos what type of army are you using that requires assault cannons to do all of your anti-tank work?

Apparently walking grey knights with 3 assault cannon equipped dreads and no psycannons, which he claims to never lose with. I think I know why now...

burnthexenos has added his own rules to his page 38, according to what he's said in this topic and other ones.
