Anyone heard about this website?

http://www.advancedtautactica.com

The shock is that, you are NOT ALLOWED to have other forum members reviewing your army list unless you write a paragraph before hand exquistely explaining your reasons behind the list?! Isn't that taking away the whole point of army list sections?

Way to make a fun game elitist...

Anyway, here is what the cultured moderator replied to me...

PLA, as much as we enjoy the adulation, it'll get you nowhere, sincere or not. I can appreciate wanting to have your list (and therefore inventiveness) appreciated and applauded, but ATT is neither a list factory nor an approval site for a "hey, is my list l33t?!11!"

Your post itself is not up to standards, nor is your subject line.

"Post with substance or not at all. This site is paid for and maintained entirely by volunteers. Every post you make, we pay for out of our own pockets, and out of our own time. Make our investment in the community worthwhile by only posting when you have something of substance to contribute. "Shoutin' out to my peeps." doesn't cut it. "This army list sucks." also doesn't cut it. Use the clearest language you can, check and re-check your spelling, research your hypotheses before you post, and provide quantifiable evidence that supports your point.

Respond to Requests from Ranked Members: ATT's ranked members have a tremendous collective wealth of experience and knowledge, and we trust them to maintain the overall quality of the site through their own fine example, and through direct suggestion where necessary. Please heed their advice and requests.

It may seem as though these principles make us unwelcoming to hobby or gaming novices. This is far from true, and we welcome anyone who can write and think clearly to join us. However, as in a modern library or peer-reviewed publication, your access to this body of knowledge does not immediately grant you the ability to contribute your own materials to the collective body of work. Quality work and respect for your fellow members in the relatively "easygoing" Concourse levels are the only path to higher rank and full posting rights in the other forums. Lurking is strongly encouraged and promotion can be swift if your contributions show quality."

From the forum posting rules of Dakka Dakka itself:

"Rule 1: Be Polite.

...It also should go without saying that swearing, profanity, sexual references, etc. are strictly forbidden. Remember that we have readers of all ages."

Is there a point to this thread? Is there a need for the profanity in the thread title or the derogatory attitude towards the sexuality of others? I think not.

I for one have no experience with the gentlemen from the Advanced Tau Tactica, but I agree wholeheartedly with their attitude. An online forum is only as good as the sum of its parts, after all.

Blimey, they're a bit self important!
As a relative newbie, I've really enjoyed the informal but helpful nature of this site that is (virtually always) respectful. It's much easier for me to post my thoughts and questions here, without trying for 'promotion'. I can understand why they would want material of a high quality, but this hobby is supposed to be welcoming and friendly, with every able to discuss whatever they want. If you don't want to join in a discussion with someone, you simply don't. End of.

Nah man, I didn't swear at all in that topic, but he deleted my "rate my army thread" because I didn't write a paragraph accompanying it. If dakka dakka has the same attitude then half of the post in this section would disappear.

Also, yak's house, yak's rules, and this thread is rather off-topic for this forum, isn't it?

Semi, since it's about "almost" able to post an army list thread.

He was quoting the dakka rules, and you made the title of your topic a swear word (first mistake), you posted in the wrong forum (it really does belong in offtopic so is moved here now), and the initial thread itself was borderline inflammatory and has been slightly edited now.

Rules are meant to be broken!!!

And 'ban this user' buttons were made to be used... please take time to read the rules (linked at the bottom of every page), and ensure that they are not broken. We are more tolerant than most other forums but breaking 2 rules in one thread is pushing it too far. Consider this post to be your first warning.

Also, it is important to remember that the online community is a *community* that has many different facets to enjoy.

If you don't like that particular site's requirements for posting, go somewhere else!

But don't begrudge them because they have standards they abide to.

One's religion has no bearing on a desire for decency. I don't think dragging religion or political affiliations into the thread is of any relevance.

We dont like having to edit posts when posters should be doing it themselves. Games Workshop are the ones who say no swearing in exchange for a more lax policy in using their intellectual property, so it is not our choice. This isnt a democracy either, so annoying the mods and admins will be enough to warrant a ban.

As a Christian and a conservative I vote you should be banned. Note there is no smiley face.
Bigotry has no place and if you start posting with something like that you are not worth bothering with.

Huh. I had no idea that GW required no swearing for use of their IP. Seems like an odd stipulation from a company that makes part of it's living selling a horrific vision of the future complete with genocide, racial cleansing, eugenics, torture and a fair amount of S&M imagery.

I suppose it's all fine as long as someone doesn't use a naughty word and make Mammy actually pay attention to little Johnny's newest hobby...

Although I do now understand the word censor a bit better.

I want to tackle the original topic without using a "their forum, their rules" arguement, even if it is completely valid.

As someone who responds to army list threads, it helps if there's a little info about the list being reviewed. If you post a list without context, you'll get useless advice which wastes both your time and the responders' time. For example, if your list contains one unit of Fire Warriors and one unit of Kroot and no other Troops choices, people might respond to tell you to dump the Kroot for more Fire Warriors, and put them in Devilfish while you're at it. To which you respond that you don't have any Devilfish or more Fire Warriors, and besides, the Kroot are central to some crazy awesome strategy with the Sniper Drones, so neither one will be removed! At which point, they ignore you because you blew off their advice because you couldn't take the time to include your army-defining strategy in the OP.

It doesn't have to be a huge paragraph. It could be, "Hey, I'm new to Tau. Here's my list. I've read the tactics articles (You did read the tactics articles, right?), so I think I got the basics covered. Beyond that, I just grabbed some models I liked the looks of. I think it's pretty balanced. Any advice?" Or, "I like missiles. A lot. So I took a couple of Skyrays, Crisis Suits with Missile Pods, Broadsides with SMS, and put max Seeker missiles and SMS on all my Devilfish. I tried to fit as many markerlights as I could into the rest of the army. How does it look?" Or even, "I'm going for a Vior'la sept army. While I'm not using Commander Farsight, I am loosely basing the list construction on the restrictions used in his special rules. I figured they would be similar in theme, but since they're not out in the Damocles Gulf and loyal, they would easily be resupplied. So I could take more Hammerheads. How did I do?"

It took me five minutes to type up blurbs for three different hypothetical army lists. Surely, it wouldn't take long to type up something similar for one actual army list.

Yeah that is also why there are lots of feths and gaks, but very few actual swear words in black library books too. Somewhere deep in the legal T&Cs on GW's website is the full explanation, and even though it is basically crap from a legal perspective thanks to fair use laws, it saves us the hassle of dealing with them over every little thing. If they ever got too bad with unreasonable demands we would probably just move to a non-WIPO friendly country like Russia

Grignard, what what kind of adolescent rebellion do you expect from a kid living in a country with a big city called Christchurch?

I said similarly dumb things when I was a kid, and the fundamentalist Christians were burning D&D books.

Trust me man, I have as much excuse as anyone to have that attitude, you really can't imagine. But you know what? I got over it. Just because he has some Manson albums, a long jacket, and some hair gel doesn't make him a rebel, it makes him look like another idiot cast in a mold. An internet message board is essentially a public forum, and if he is going to participate it is just as well that he learns what sort of BS ( Like this ) is going to get him called out. It isn't the Christian conservative thing as much as lines like "rules are meant to be broken" that are the problem. There are rules here for a reason. And for what it matters, I'm not one that thinks you need to explain the rules to children, they're just supposed to follow them.

Again, assuming his age, I really don't know how old he is.

Such lies :( anyway, before you gonna be nasty to me again, please read the lyrics below

Give me time

To release my crime

Let me love and steal
I have danced
Inside your eyes
How can love be real

Do you really want to hurt me
Do you really want to
Make me cry
Precious kisses
Words that burn me
Lovers never ask you why
In my heart
The fires burning
Choose my colour
Find a star
Precious people always tell me
That's a step
A step too far

*Do you really want to hurt me
Do you really want to
Make me cry
Do you really want to hurt me
Do you really want to
Make me cry

Words are few
I have spoken
I could waste a thousand years
Wrapped in sorrow
Words are token
Come inside/and catch my tears
You've been talking
But believe me

If it's true
You do not know
This boy loves without a reason
I'm prepared
To let you go

If it's love you want from me
Then take it away
Everything is not what you see
It's over again
