AdeptiCon 2009 Dates and Location Announced!

AdeptiCon News

AdeptiCon will return April 3 – 5, 2009 for its seventh year of Games Workshop miniature wargaming madness. Mark your calendars, put in for the time off work, and start making your travel plans, because AdeptiCon just keeps getting bigger and better!

This year we will be moving to the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center in Lombard, IL, just outside of Chicago. Full details concerning the new venue (including room codes & rates) will be posted within the next week.

Join the AdeptiCon 2009 Staff!
Become a part of the AdeptiCon 2009 team! With all the extra space we’re going to have in 2009, we’re looking for volunteers who are excited and passionate about the hobby to help us continue AdeptiCon’s tradition of excellence.

We are looking for volunteers in the following areas:

* Operations Staff (Setup, Registration, Tech Support, Breakdown)
* 40K Tournament/Event Staff
* Fantasy Tournament/Event Staff
* Specialist Games Tournament/Event Staff
* Hobby Seminar Instructors
* Communications *
* Terrain Building (Chicago-area residency required) *

* These groups perform the majority of their work before AdeptiCon. All other groups do their work during the AdeptiCon weekend itself.

Note that with one exception (the Terrain Group), Chicago-area residency is NOT required, so no matter where you live you can help make AdeptiCon 2009 happen!

E-mail adeptuswindycity@gmail.com today with your name, contact info, and areas in which you’d be particularly interested in volunteering. A member of the AdeptiCon Council will get in touch with you. Planning for AdeptiCon 2009 begins in earnest, so join the team today!

On the Horizon: The AdeptiCon 2008 Retrospective
The AdeptiCon Retrospective will be released in the next day or so, so stay tuned for full coverage of AdeptiCon 2008, including event featurettes, the full listing of award winners, and much more.

I looked up Lombard, IL and it is about 20 miles away from O'Hare Int. Airport. I liked the last location because for out-of-towners an airport hotel with a free shuttle was very convenent.

This location is right off the 355 tollway and across the street from the Battle Bunker. There is a Hooters, Portillos, Burger King, Joes Crab Shack, and several other resturaunts all within short walking distance and all the parking is free!!

Allan,

There is no doubt the free shuttle to the airport was very nice. That was a heavy consideration. We will be working with this hotel to provide an affordable solution for those flying. Once we get the details we will make it available.

As far as this venue goes .. this is by far and away the best hotel I personally have been at for a gaming convention. Additionally your going to be a stone throw away from the Chicago Battle Bunker, free parking, tons of food options, and shopping nearby. Additionally the hotel will run a shuttle to nearby shopping and businesses.

Wasn't part of my job picking up my teammates from the airport...

I understand people's hesitation, but Rosemont really sucks. Being in a better place with in and out parking and the opportunity to travel for food and other entertainment a short distance will be much better for the con.

Good location, this area is accessible by multiple expressways (355/294/88/route 83) and has a ton of restaurants (I'll be at Hooters), and stores. Plus Battle Bunker FTW.

Well, I am grateful for the lift, but my personal preference would be not to inconvenience my teammates.

The one downside to the Crown Plaza in Rosemont is that it is in the middle of nowhere, and there were no places to eat within a reasonable walking distance. Also the hotel knows this and rakes you over the coals for the cost of food and drink.

The other thing is that the Crown Plaza is that they charged $10 a night for parking if you did not have a room. The locals screamed about paying the $10 when before they were parking for free. Of course after paying $300 for a plane flight and $109 a night for a hotel room, paying $10 for parking seems reasonable.

After paying for parking anywhere else in the city, 10 dollars
didn't seem so bad.

But when you can't get food except at the location, then
paying for parking can be more than annoying.

If you are a local an ice chest will solve all of your problems.

It is the travelers that are hurt the most by not having any food that is close.

I dont know what people are talking about. It was perfect this year. The free shuttle could also be used to take you to the airport then you can take the train all the way into town. Thats what I did. I was hanging out all around downtown and it cost my like 3 bux. being 20 miles away and having to fork over an arm and a leg for cab fares blows. Some of us that do not drive there do not care about in and out parking, not to mention and the crown plaza it didn't matter cause you could take the public xport everywhere. At games day (at the stephens convention center) which is accross the street from where adepticon was I flew into midway, then took a train from midway to downtown, hung out, ate, drank a bit, then took the train all the way to the convention center. This new place sounds like its gonna blow. The plaza also had a bar.

How is the new location set up for NON-GAMER shopping, for those of us who will have to bring our S.O.'s?

Ridiculously close proximity to a massive amounts of shopping, of whatever you want.

Joes Crab Shack is gone, not entirely sure what is going in.

also getting there from O'Hare isn't as nice as Rosemont, but once you get there it's a winner ( it also avoids "Toddler" Stroger recent tax raise, especially if he jumps it another point in December as has been threatened, though the 9.35% tax in the around Yorktown area isn't great either.)

If you are coming in from O'Hare and you can't get a ride, these are the best direction I can think of to get to the Westin

If you fly into O'Hare airport.

go to the CTA blue line train ( it's in the lower level of the airport from terminals 1-3. International traffic will come in at terminal 5, take the electric trolley to terminal 3 ( up in departures so grab you baggage and then to up to arrivals, then back down in terminal 3), this is the most walking you will do, but it's climate controlled. Since this is where the line ends this will save you some discomfort of which way to go. take the blue line to the Jefferson Park CTA/Metra rail stop and proceed to board the Metra to Chicago Ogilve station (Chicago Loop). This station is mostly enclosed and escalators and Lifts/Elevators are available. Also some food is available here and not as expensive as O'Hare ( also less "vermin infested"). At Ogilve station simply go to the ticket agent ( as tickets are more expensive if you purchase on the train) and board the West Line to Glen Ellyn Metra (which is past Lombard, but since there is no public trans is availble out of that station, Glen Ellyn is the next best stop), from there take the Pace bus #715 from the front of the train station ( north side of building, train comes in facing west, you exit the south side of the track). simply take the bus to the Yorktown mall, the Westin is on the north east outlot next to the Target.

There are course some possible variations on this but the reason I feel that those without transportation of their own ( or just cheap like me) is this exposes you to the least outdoor time in April out here, avoids almost all "combat zones " (like the entire west side of Chicago), and is the least amount of walking short of renting a car, or getting picked up at O'Hare, in which case have them pick you up at either the remote parking at Higgins and Mannheim, or (if the must go to the building simply arrange to get picked at departures as meeting people here is MUCH less chaotic with the Hacks at arrivals)

I'm really thinking that this'll be my first Adepticon. For those of you that travelled with your mini's before, would you advise carrying them on, checking them, or shipping them to the hotel prior to leaving?

Getting my broom incase there is shenanigans.

I always have my minis as carry on and check my suitcase.

There are a couple reasons for it.
#1. If your checked luggage got lost you can survive the weekend with out your luggage, but not without your minis.

#2. Who knows how they are going to be treated in the luggage compartment, so it is best to have them with you and stuff them yourself in the overhead bin. That way at least you know you were the one to break all of your figures when you open up your case.

Unfortunately most people only see the final result of a venue selection process. The Crowne Plaza was very difficult for us to deal with last year for a variety of reasons. Even still had they come back with the same sort of deal it would have been difficult for us to leave that venue.

Ultimately they priced themselves out of it with a large sliding scale room rate for 2009 that we felt was unreasonable. The room rate increase, the parking costs, and the difficulties from the previous year forced us to look elsewhere. Honestly, I'm grateful as this new venue is not only head and shoulders better but has enough space that we can continue at this location for years to come.

This new place sounds like its gonna blow. The plaza also had a bar.

Well I travel a great bit for a living and I have stayed at some swanky hotels. This place rates up there with some of the best places I have stayed ever .. It for all practical purposes is a new convention hotel less than a year old. ( and yes .. I stayed at this hotel for business while in Chicago to try it out )

As for bars? You got a bar on site .. in Harry Carey. Your going to have a bar just outside the hall provided by the hotel and your going to have plenty of bar choices within a short distance from the hotel.

This is so cool! Next year I hope to go to my first AdeptiCon, and imagine my surprise when I find out it's being held about 2 blocks from where I work! Excellent!

It's really a nice area, folks. Just a skip from the Chicago Bunker (which is awesome), and very close to 'ridiculous amounts' of non-gaming shopping, as someone else mentioned, along with lots of great food!

Very good area!
