Hi guys,
I recently visited my local store when the manager was working on the wall with blister packs. Appearantly GW is cutting down their range of models once again and said manager was marking the models which won't be available anymore. This is nothing new, but I was surprised by what models they no longer plan to sell in a normal store. I just looked closer at the wall with 40k minis so I I'm not sure how hard fantasy and LotR will be hit by this.
So, blisters which are now appearantly out of production:
Chaos Terminators (no big surprise here, they have a plastic kit)
Chaos Terminator Lord (also has a plastic kit)
Chaos Obliterators (wait...what?)
Eldar special character Autarch, Yiriell or something like that.
All Harlequin blisters.
Several Sisters of Battle models (not mch of a surprise, considering that the WH Codex is now open for download)
Dark Angel special characters. Appearantly GW has no interest in selling DAs at all, so they cut their range down to a minimum. On a side note, the Ravenwing jetbike box is also oop

There were also some boxes which are now longer available. Old SM stuff mostly, but also the WHFB Chaos cannon and the Wood Elf Overlord what's-his-name.

This is really sad to hear [unless they are going to be releasing plastic box sets to counter this], i loved going in to a GW and buying a blister instead of a battle force for just some extra not a slab of stuff.

Yes some metal models are bad but it's better to have a metal model than none at all.

Are they introducing plastic Oblits?

Sammael on jet bike is better model, but battleforce offers the speeder version.

Denying options will hurt modelers/conversion junkies.

Special characters are supposed to go mail order only after the initial release period.

But yeah, GW is contracting.

Well I wouldn't mind plastic Oblits. Those metals are incredibly easy to break.

The only shocker there is the oblits. There must be a plastic line on the way.

thats what im thinking shuma, how many lists these days consist of double lash and oblit spam?
im guessing the sales of oblits since the new dex have gone up loads.

First of all, this is all still available to order. Either online mailorder, the bitz station in GW stores, or the catalog or bitz station in larger independents. Nothing goes away, it just might not be hanging on the wall. As to this list, here in the states some of this might be lingering around, but most has been unable to order for some time.

Except for Yiriell and Oblits, I think most of this has been gone for months to a year here in the states. I've had no problem ordering any of it.

GW need to collapse the model range into fewer boxsets. This cuts overheadsin a number of ways.

Dark Angels could be condensed to a Dark Angel Ravenwing boxset, a Dark Angel infantry boxset, and a character boxset. The rest is just SM.

GW have not been averse in thep ast to selling characters in a pack of five. They should do so now.

The more the line is condensed the easier it is to stockcheck, the more stock frontage you can produce, cycling costs diminish and the amalgamation of certain lines protects them by grouping sales.

Makes sense, but I haven't heard ANYTHING at all about new Oblits...

They have to cut back the range to allow spaces for the new releases.

Remember there is a bucketload of orks in the 2nd wave on the way...

Well Samael is still in my local Bunker.

Given that in general, a particular army will only have one of those models in it en total, and not every army will even use them, having them in stores will just lead to more of them hanging around not being sold. Blisters like special characters being removed to mail order only makes sense. The others are more questionable, but it really needs to be answered, are they going out of production, or just to mail order only?

Where is the WH codex open for download from, I haven't heard anything about that, and it's still up for sale.

Well it is on the german site. And the WH book, just like the SW 'Dex is officially out of print.

The Chaos Hellcannon is the only one that surprises me. Didn't they just release a new army book that includes it? Or has it even been released yet?

And they are coming out with a new Hellcannon I think. Probably because the Chaos Mortals Dex just arrived.

Or you could just order them from GW mailorder.

All this stuff is not out of print. It's just not going to be in stores anymore. You can get it from GW mailorder, GW stores, or most independent stores.

That's just the problem. My independent store has the complete 40k and WHFB range. If they don't get it anymore, that means that it has become mail oder only at best.

Sammy on his Jetbike is officially "gone and lost forever" except where stores/countries have a stock left of the model.

That don't make a lick of sense.

I can understand that they need shelf space and reducing Special Characters in-store gains them back some space... but to discontinue it completely?

Doesn't this happen every time GW pulls stuff from their stores. Everyone goes, "Oh noes, it's gone forevers!" and then they realize they can still buy it online or order it from retailers.

Seriously though, I still don't understand how this is "really stupid."

When GW released its last trade catalog (or maybe it was the one before that, I forget), most (maybe all) of the stuff mentioned by the OP was listed as "While Supplies Last" and would become Direct Only (with a few exceptions, like Sammy or being totally replaced with a new/repackaged kit/box/blister like the metal/plastic Landspeeder hybrid kits as the all-in-one plastic kit). Sammy, being an one off splash release, was gone when sold-out like the Dark Angels Command Squad boxt or the Dark Angels Battleforce, it just took him a lot longer to be soldl out. Except for Sammy, all of the DA Special Characters have been Direct Only since last year or early this year (again, I forget when exactly). This is the first I heard about the Obits (unless the OP means the original Obits which have been "While Supplies Last for a long, long time).

Note: If you phone up GW directly, they might be able to get Sammy (or other discontinued stuff) for you if they have a few hiding in the warehouse (I got my copy of Daemonifuge that way this early year and it has been out of print/sold out for a long while).

GW has to pull some things to direct only- due to the fact that they are sat on a shelf without enough being sold to warrent them being in stores.

Most things aren't gone for good when that happens- so far as I know all of those things are still avalible from direct sales- and that will continue to be the place to get things that don't fall into the top 800 products (this is what is meant to be in stores btw)



All of this strikes me as abit odd thought...

how is it stupid that GW is moving the stuff that has obviously been sat on a shelf unsold for ages back to HQ so that it can still be sold by direct sales for someone who wants it- heck someone who might not be able to trek to some far away store that for somereason still has one?

And why do you assume things have gone out of production without checking that they aren't still avalible from direct?
