hmmmm? Seems the same amount on my server as before. Then again I play on the servers that were populated by the rest of beta people and most of the DaoC people. So perhaps the rest of the yolkels that showed up when the game went live dropped out again on the low population servers? Makes sense to me since they are now funneling people off of the low pop servers into targeted ones to fill them up consistantly and therefor cut down on operating costs. But I highly doubt this game will be a failure or could be considered one (like tabula rasa and Hellgate: London). I actually think its been very successful its more what I am looking for from a MMO than WoW or EQ ever was. Although I am still waiting for a good MMO FPS...(go go fallout online starting april 2009 or bust!)

750 thousand players as of over a month ago isn't a failure. In fact that makes it the second most successful paid MMO that I am aware of at this time.

I think you'll have to watch the numbers for the next 2 months to determine if it's a loss or not. If enough people jump ship to WoW then it'll tank. But it does offer something different than WoW, it just doesn't appeal to the kiddies as much

All of the WoW players that were squatting in warhammer online before WoTLK could leave and they would still have a large enough community to support and grow the game. There's also the fact that WoTLK does nothing to attract new players to world of warcraft as it adds nothing to the first 60 levels of content. Its an endgame patch and is an even more shallow attempt to keep the playerbase grinding then the first WoW expansion which at least added two races and expanded low level content. Theres little chance of players that don't already play WoW jumping ship to join it simply because of WoTLK.

WotLK is just comfirmation that Warcraft IV will never happen because players fethed up the canon.

Well the main problem with Warhammer online is that it was trying to do what every other MMO tried to do, BE WoW.

Every time they come out they announce it as the "WoW killer" but that never happens. The day they create a 40k online is the day I sell my soul. There was just no reason to stop playing WoW and move to World of Warhammer Craft.

Why not. It's their show they can just write a new story. They can create an entirely different world if they want. Night elves vs Burning Legion, anything they want. Think Final Fantasy.

Nothing fethed up the canon like Warcraft III did, if it comes down to it. Trees? wtf.

The funny part about this is that (assuming Cheese is a warhams player) Warham's been retconned more times than you can count.

In reality it was the god awful online play and cringe inducing storyline of warcraft III that has insured that warcraft IV will never happen. It was just all around a bad game that hopped on the 3d bandwagon before 3d engines were ready and attempted to introduce a hamfisted character progression system that only served to remove what little economic and army balancing it had. Unfortunately the cringe inducing storyline of warcraft III went through a massive blender with anime stereotypes and horrifyingly inane pop culture references when it became the WoW storyline. The world of warcraft canon is an infernal engine of horrible fanficiton, bad internet video parody, and porn. And thats all it is.

There's a reason 40k is so easily laughed about and parodied in the 4chan boards. The fanfiction, the porn, the pop culture references. It's all there.

Not really. WAR made all the other steps easier in order to make pvp more of a goal. For
instance, maximum rank is 40, but maximum realm rank is 80. Realm rank is the pvp
track.

Warhammer Online is anything but a failure. The only reason it doesn't have the numbers that WoW does is because it requires reading stuff sometimes, and we can't have the brain dead gnome gankers having to think now and then can we?

What are you talking about?

I played for 5 hours today non-stop RvR there are tons of people on even though WoWs expansion released today.

People are going to realise that Blizzard is just raping them every month for the same rehashed crap. $50 for 10 more levels and 1 new class (that you have to quest to get) Give me a break....

The only good thing about wow is that all the 12 year old retards are glued to blizzards ass.

So, seemingly, no, we cannot in fact all agree Warhammer Online was a failure.

And technically, you should have asked 'IS Warhammer Online a failure'. Note the present tense. The past tense suggests the game is no longer active, and most likely would have been a rhetorical question.

Interesting thing is, my flatmate who is an avid WoW player, says he enjoys the Warhammer one more now, barring the interface which he says is a bit shonky....

Actually the 'problem' is one of perspective:
For alot of people that play(ed) WoW it was their first MMORPG. So when these people look at another mmo they're thinking it's trying to be wow, while all it does is have the solid mmo features no selfrespecting mmo would go without. Whenever i hear "It's trying to be WoW" my brain registers it as "It tries to be a succesfull MMO".

In general every game maker looks around at other games (present & past) and see what works and what doesn't, if you're making a mmo you can't afford to not look at WoW's features, they've raised the standard for the genre to a new level, any new mmo will have to be of similar quality if it wants to stay in the main market.
And when wow was made they sure took a long hard look at everquest, doac, ultima ect ... and the fact that blizzard copied WAR's achievement tome tells me they haven't stopped looking at other games.

I think the reason 40k is so easily laughed about on 4chan is because thats all anyone on /tg/ plays and 4chan makes fun of everything from african genocide to people falling down stairs. It just lines up perfectly. Its also pretty telling that 40k is coherent enough to be mocked, whereas WoW references just end up as porn or saged.

Theres a difference between an amalgamation of:
bible themes, star wars themes, rambo, aliens, starship troopers, world war two, and direct tolkein fantasy influences
And:
He-man, Lost, maple story, warhammer fantasy, lotr, sailor moon, and random furaffinity posts

World of warcrafts story is so inane and mindless that it actually uses the warhammer setting, already a massive pop culture amalgamation, as a direct influence in its amalgamation. And then makes it colorful with direct old 80's references, chibi anime character design, and a color palette out of a childs coloring book. If 40k is mountain dew, WoW is a mountain dew flavored slurpee in a cup with master chief on it handed too you by a 29 year old stoner who wishes that the PA could be playing tool instead of holiday songs.

I'm still having a blast on WAR, and I haven't noticed a drop in server pop on Gorfang.

If your server is empty, it may be that many folks have taken advantage of the new free server transfers.

WoW is a fine game, and so is WAR.

LOL.

Note that in response to an earlier poster, there will be a Warcraft IV at some point much like there is a Starcraft 2. Blizzard is using the two games to publish two different types of RTS.

Wait, 4chan makes fun of everything, but when it makes fun of WoW it is somehow different and more degrading?

First of all, you're relying on 4chan to determine the quality of a given storyline. Seriously.

Second, you're reading selectively from 'criticism' in order to support a conclusion you have already come to. This is no more objective than simply saying 'WoW sucks'.

I'm not saying that WoW, or the Warcraft universe itself, is particularly compelling. It is pure and simple camp. But that is also its appeal. It used to be Warhammer's appeal as well.

Maybe, but warhammer has taken influence from a great many sources as well. In general it has tried to become a much more 'serious' thematic setting; especially with the last few army books. Just look at the fluff for the current WE, and the concurrent stuff from the old book.
