Well, the new years is just half a gnat’s chuff away. And as I’m working tomorrow, then heading round a friend’s for New Years Eve? I’m starting the thread now.
In 2024 I committed to Something Hobby Every Day. It didn’t quite pan out that way, but I still got more painted over that period than easily the last decade. So whilst not quite to plan, it’s still a success.
Of course, that means I’ve burned through the bulk of my backlog. I’ve still stuff in the pile of opportunity (seemingly never ending Necromunda Terrain, HeroQuest, other odds and sods), but nowhere enough for another Hobby Every Day.
So in 2025, I’m shifting the goalposts. And I’m going to commit to “one in, one out”. As in, when I buy a box, I don’t buy anything else until I’ve built and painted a box. And that’s at a minimum. I’ve still got my Eldar to do, and whilst not a huge army, I’d like that done before the new Codex.
But…yeah. Whether from the pile of opportunity, or a whole new box? Nothing more will be bought until an existing purchase is built, painted and based. In fact, I’m gonna limit myself to Only Buying On A Saturday. Adds some extra discipline, and space for working on lots of units.
Kits Bought in 2025 - 2 Boreas Conifguration Deredeo
Eldar Autarch
Kits Painted in 2025 Mechanicum Castellax x 3
Mechanicum Thallaxi x 2
Boreas Configuration Deredeo x 1
Current Kit Credit = 4
And to set the tone?

I'll be watching this space with interest. You did pretty good last year; truly inspirational! I know I'm gonna need to rally hard to get my pile of opportunity small in 2025, as I've got several board games in addition to armies for all the Warhammers except for HH. Maybe that Rocky music is for me too, huh?
My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700
Check out my P&M Blogs: ZergSmasher's P&M Blog | Imperial Knights blog | Board Games blog | Total models painted in 2024: 40 | Total models painted in 2025: 21 | Current main painting project: Warhammer 40k Leviathan set

The Grotsnik Corp Bump Feelerer 9,000. It only looks like several bricks crudely gaffer taped to a cricket bat.
Grotsnik Corp. Sorry, No Refunds.
Rocky is for everyone, for it’s the tale of an Everyman overcoming seemingly insurmountable odds
The good thing about a Pile of Opportunity is with it comes variety.
Sick to the back teeth of painting a given army? Refresh your palette with something else. Or a few somethings. It’s alright, the other project isn’t going anywhere.
I flitted between Heresy, Epic, Necromunda Terrain and Epic Terrain, and that really held my interest.
Automatically Appended Next Post: And more musical inspiration, as that’s the mood I’m in.
Just got to believe in your commitment, that whatever painting goal you set can and will be met.

My workflow is not nearly quick enough to to a buy/buid/paint before moving on to the next thing, but it’s a noble concept. I aim for “paint more then I buy” and keep tabs on the rate of things going into the pile of shame and coming off of the workbench.
I tried to keep it one box at a time for my Nids, but things like FOMO megaforces and new CPs made it hard to adhere to. There was time I was in the red. Because at the end of the day, we deserve shiny new models!
You did a great job in 2024, looking forward to seeing what you do in the new year.
Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows.
It’s a very mean and nasty place and I don’t care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it.
You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life.
But it ain’t about how hard ya hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done!
Now if you know what you’re worth then go out and get what you’re worth. But ya gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers saying you ain’t where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody!
Cowards do that and that ain’t you! You’re better than that!
I’m always gonna love you no matter what. No matter what happens.
You’re my son and you’re my blood. You’re the best thing in my life.
But until you start believing in yourself, ya ain’t gonna have a life.“
Good Luck with 2025! I'm going to enter the race a little late this year, but hopefully I'll go the distance too!

So got my first three boxes planned, as I’m off work from Wednesday to the end of the week.
Not currently drinking, as my body has realised it’s middle aged and so can’t be fun anymore. So despite New Year’s Eve, I aim to hit the ground running.
Gonna go for two boxes of Thallaxi and one box of Castellax built, painted and based by the end of Sunday, which I know I’m perfectly capable of.
That will set me off on the good foot, with 3 Done, 0 Bought.
From there, I’ll likely make a start on the Eldar. I was wanting to get them done as part of my 2024 odyssey, but it wasn’t to be.
Watch out for a separate thread for the Avatar though. There, I’m really gonna push myself, as I bought one for my mate that’s an excellent painter, and he’s gonna coach me through it. Centrepieces like that deserve a little extra, don’t you think?
Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh, and for clarity? Any big boxes, like the Mechanicum Battle Group will count as however many basic boxes it’s comprised of, rather than just one. So it’s important I build myself up “credit” in completed units.

And here we go. Whilst I’ve a couple of things to do first (like go collect my car, because only dickheads drink and drive), the plan is to make inroads to my On-Sprue Mechanicum.
In the pictured stack we have two more Castellax, and 6 Thallaxi. Once home my intention is to get those all built.
I can also be time efficient and get the four assembled Castellax sprayed black.
Then tomorrow I can build the other six Thallaxi, and get today’s assemblies sprayed black. Which, all going more or less to plan, leaves me Friday, Saturday and Sunday to belt through the painting.
I must also remember to put the spare weapons up for sale, as I can recoup some funds that way.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Nearly finished building the first Castellax, so behind where I envisioned. Doesn’t matter though. The time taken is irrelevant. Completion is all that matters.
Whilst they get a bit fiddly, I do love the plastic Mechanicum kits.
Everything goes together just so, and the end results are nicely, but not overly, detailed.
The fiddly comes from tiny components, but never tiny connection point. Which might seem an odd claim given some bits are proper titchy.
The smallest parts thus far are probably ankle cabling for the Castellax. But those have a well designed and cast square socket joint for one end. Provided you get that done right? It’s sorted.
Really looking forward to getting all the gubbins painted and doing you lovely lot a group shot.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Also? More musical inspired. This time dedicated to our wider dedication to the hobby.
Always something to paint. Always something to add. Other hobbies to help us relax after work and do things which Just Make Us Happy.
Warning, it’s a bit awesome. Doc Korp bears no responsibility for the level of inspiration and hobby frenzy induced.

So does an army box count as one box then? How 'bout character boxes :-) Asking for a friend.
I love your goals for this year and the fact you're already making progress. I've had to go with the 'finish this army' goal and because it's an Old World Warhammer army its easier to not have FOMO as, well, the whole thing is already out and it's not like they're getting any more for quite some time. Good luck!
Army Box I’ll count as the individual kits contained within. So for my Mechanicum, it came with full box worth of Tech Thralls, Thallaxi, Castellax and Triaros, so if I wanted another, I’d need to have built, painted and based four other boxed sets.
And the stuff you see here, once the other 6 Thallaxi are done, will count as me completing 5 boxed sets.
Characters I think I’ll do One In, One Out as a separate track. Available to get me in the black on that there’s the Magos in the pic, and a Jetbike Farseer not pictured. Any that come as a multipack will count as one, rather than however individual models there are.
Right, just 6 more Thallaxi to go, then a load of spraying. Dog Sitting away again tomorrow, so the grand empaintening will happen on Sunday. I use an established, super quick and easy scheme which should allow me to complete it all in a day. Or at least the Castellax.

Good luck MDG! If you replicate last year, your Pile-of-Shame will be gone in no time!
I personally use a 1 in and one out style system myself, with a small twist. I keep 1 in, 1 in reserve, and 1 out. That way I always have an assembly line of projects going. I stay pretty busy.
I look forward to your HQ stuff!
