I was recently in a games store looking for some more paint, the store has an older rack (it looks current though) in this rack they have notes for discontinued colors for a wide range of useful colors including:

Pink
Light Orange
Dark Blue

and all the inks (which I understand since the new washes are out, but, they were useful and technically pretty different)

and at least 2 other colors as well (I was not looking for).

Why would GW discontinue paint colors? I needed some more, I have armies I need those colors for. Mid tone orange and pink being gone seems like colors that are needed and not so easily mixed.

Has this been troublesome to anyone else?

Does anyone know why?

I'm glad I still have full pots of all of those. Why they would get rid of those colours is beyond me.

I've found that Vallejo tends not to discontinue colors. Check out this chart to help you pick an equivalent paint in Vallejo or another brand of your choice.

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k.                                                                                                       Rule #1

If I were to take a guess, it would be that they feel the Foundation paints obsolete some of the old colors. That doesn't really explain the loss of pink though. Pink probably just doesn't sell, except for to Slaanesh people.

Vallejo should make similar, if not the exact same colors to what you're missing now.

Indeed, that was actually one I wanted.

A lot of the GW paints use to come in ghreat progressions, that is colors in series, for shading, a dark, a medium a light and an edge color. They broke this pattern with 2 of my favorite series in the GW line, for Gold with brazen brass betwen shining gold and Tin Bitz and with Orange at the end of blood red, blazing orange. Both colors are missing now.

Irritating.

Also how can one mix brazen brass? You can't.

No tin bitz? I just recently came to fall in love with that colour too! It's a shame.

Thanks but vallejo paints don't help me because:

they are flat (different sheen)
they have a powder based pigment with a different granularity
they do not have the same liquid properties as gw

I don't like them as much. Also in my experience all the Vallejo paints tend to be more subtle and not as bold as the rich GW colors, particularly in Red, orange and yellow, where the vallejo equivalents aren't even similar in their dull flat tones. (Don;t get me wrong I like vallejo but I only use it for the military colors, where flatnesses is a good quality and they have GW smoked for variety in military colors...)

I think GW just has bad marketing, supply issues, and poor customer service for paints.

There are lots of acrylic paint types available. The artists' paints such as Liquitex need mixing with media but the range is huge -- you should be able to find the colours you need.

Many paint ranges are short lived because the pigment runs out. You can get a new batch, but the colour never matches which is probably why there has been so many variations on 'goblin green' and why over the years the Humbrol paints vary in colour even on tins of the same number/colour.

I understand. I am still using GW paints myself. If I were you my next plan would be to scour the online merchants. I'd think that one of them somewhere still has a few Tentacle Pinks or whatever it was called. Then if I found some I'd buy every pot they have left.

Dwarf Bronze is very close to Brazen Brass. Maybe try and mix a little black or dark brown with that. It wouldn't be exact, but it might get you close enough. Obviously the next thing you'll tell me is that Dwarf Bronze is gone too.

That's a shame on Tin Bitz. If they get rid of Graveyard Earth, I say Dakka starts a petition.

Try vallejo model color or coat d'arms instead - they are a much closer match. Model color needs thinning but that is just good practice anyway.

I'm pretty sure that Tin bitz is not on the discontinued list. Just Brazen brass, which erks me to no end. The best way I've found to make your own Brazen brass color is to mix 50/50 Tin bitz and Dwarf bronze.

Works out pretty well.

The heavy body Liquitex are like artist's oil paints. You cn ause them for models but you need to mix them with acrylic media to get them to the right consistency.

This would trouble me more, if the place i get my paints at didn't start selling the remaining pots of each color at a huge discount.

Well, that, and roughly half my paints are reaper in the nice big pots that never seem to go bad, despite things like being stored in a garage for almost 2 years

Tin bitz is still available for purchase, and is still the bee's knees.

Hawk turquoise is, too, but is less cool.
