I have been operating firearms for a couple of years now, but I've never actually shot at anything besides a deer (which I missed). So, I have resolved to start going to the local shooting range. Question is, should I start with rifles or handguns? I'm thinking rifles, because they're easier to control.

And no, I can't use pump-action/semi-auto shotguns or fully automatic weapons. They're illegal here. I can, however, use barrel-break shotguns and those ones with the bit incorporating the trigger that clicks down to reload it.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

You're in the wrong country.

What is the purpose of your visit to the range?

How is your eyesight?

Pump shotguns are illegal? How are you going to stop the inevitable Zombie outbreak? Do you have access to bolt action rifles? More importantly do you have access to Lee Enfield .303s?

Do you already own a weapon? if so, train with what you have, in order to be good with it.
If not, I would say, try everything to find out what you like?

Pump shotties and automatic weapons are illegal because in '96, a gunman killed about 50 people at an historic site.

Unlike America, we try to prevent massacres at schools.

And yes, we can use bolt-action rifles, magnums, and any shotgun besides pump-action ones.

So all I have to do is come over and kill someone with a knife, fork, spoon, spork, and ladle and your country is back to eating with their hands/sticks?

He probably would have killed less if someone shot him first.

I know that America needs tighter gun laws. Every military-issue assault rifle on the market is one more potential rampage.
It's considerably harder to go on a rampage when you have to stop and pull the bolt on your rifle every shot. Yes, semi-auto pistols are still allowed, but you aren't allowed within a kilometer of them if you have any kind of violent criminal record or any mental problems.

Stop trying to inflame me and drive this thread off-topic. I just asked for Dakka's opinion on something. You don't have to come in here and clog it with crap.

Don't even.

This is entirely your fault, and you should damn well know it.

It'd be pretty easy to go on a sniper-style "rampage" with a bolt action rifle.

I'm just saying.

I was pointing out that Australia has better gun regulation than America. We haven't had any school rampages recently, but you guys had Virginia Tech and Columbine.

Don't scold me for pointing out the obvious.

Just because you haven't had any recent school rampages, doesn't make your gun regulations "better." There's a lot of other factors.

Columbine was ten years ago, by the way. I wouldn't call that recent. And personally, semi-auto pistols are probably a lot more dangerous than pump-action shotguns. I'd be willing to bet more crimes are committed and more accidents happen with pistols than with shotguns of any type.

I don't think pointing out the obvious is why anyone is scolding you. The condescending manner in which you did so probably has more to do with it.

No, we don't get rampages here because of gun laws.

You were making no attempt to "point out" anything.
Unlike America, we try to prevent massacres at schools.
You imply that America does nothing to prevent school massacres, which is as blatant of flame-baiting as you can get, especially with the Off Topic forum's susceptibility to devolving into gun control arguments.

This thread was not opened with any relation to the value of gun control laws, it was you asking for advice on sport shooting.

I don't care if you want to ruin your own thread. Don't try and blame Ghost for it though. This was your fault. Frazzled was making zombie jokes before you started this.

I wasn't specifically stating that America does nothing to prevent rampages, but your laws are very lax when it comes to guns. Honestly, when are you going to need an automatic weapon? Or a pump-action shotgun? By all means, shoot someone if they're being dangerously violent, but there's no need at all to blast them into bits or riddle them with hundreds of painful bullets before killing them. Heck, why shoot to kill if you can shoot to disable? If they were a psychopath (e.g. Virginia Tech guy), then you could disable them and hand them over to the law. Much more efficient.

You said that you try to prevent massacres at schools, and you said that America does not.

Shut up and stop trolling.
Is this what I get for asking about sports shooting? I can't stand it when people derail serious threads, but now you're just going overboard.

America has bad gun laws.

End of story.

Back on topic. My beliefs are my own.

Do you seriously think you can make brazen statements on controversial issues while insulting other people's countries in the process without people responding to them?

You cannot. If I made a post about how Australia has terrible gun control laws in an unrelated thread it would be exactly the same. This thread was fine until you started with the "America lets people massacre children" gak. Now look at where it is.

So no, Cheese Elemental, you are the troll.

It's an irritating truth about America, something commonly agreed on by people who don't believe killing is OK.

Australia has wildlife that will rip you to pieces and eat your children. We accept that and do what we can about it.
