Discuss the topic in here! If you don't know what I'm talking about, go take a look at the latest VGCats, appropriately titled "NERD RAGE."

Also, if you agree with that comic feel free to say so because it'll let me know you have dumb opinions right up front.

I don't know if gamer elitism is a good thing, but from personal experience I can say that those of us who grew up having to write down 20 character passwords and having to beat a game in one setting have a slightly different view of the current gaming industry.

I had a discussion with a young man who felt that Halo is the end all be all of videogames. He would not concede that Mario and his ilk had any influence on the current state of things.

He worked at McDonalds. Coincidence, I think not.

Indeed I don't think it is intentional elitism, many people me included were bought up with well crafted games like Baldurs Gate 1 & 2, Fallout 1 & 2, Mario, Sonic etc etc have a different view to the games industry.

Alot of games these days tend to go with the "good sells well" syndrome and it has stagnated the market, IMO the last to games that came out that were masterpieces were MGS4 and Mass Effect, nothing has rivaled them so far I dont think.

I hate when people get all elitist about stuff, it kind of sucks. If you don't like something anymore, or the path it's heading down stop playing it don't start complaining really loudly in everyone's face. It's how I've been living for a long while. DnD started to suck (not the game, the people that play it around me) so I just quit. Video games started to suck (In my opinion, with an odd gem here and there) so I really don't play many video games anymore. Your bound to find something to fill that void again eventually.

Aye don't get me wrong it was good, I have played it to death, after playing the first 2 Fallout games it just didn't have that "Fallout vibe" if you understand, it was wearing the right clothes and saying the right things but I just felt the game had no soul unlike the original 2. That being said it was visually stunning and the gun play was awesome (if you used VATS).

All in all it was a great game, just not one of real quality like Mass Effect, that was a well crafted game, the character leveling was spot on, the levels themselves were varied and the story moved at a great pace that really gave the story and epic feel to it.

I agree with your gaming elitism, i've become quite dispondant with 40k at the moment, so instead of bitching and whinging i just quit for a while seems like the only adult thing to do in these situations.

I challenge anyone who thinks the new Bionic Commando looks cool to beat the old one. I guarantee that 90% of them can't.

I beat Re-Armed. Does that count?

To reply the OP, there is at least some truth to it. Games can still be really good, but there really is a lot of bad games out there. 40% of all Wii games are bad ideas from the start.
This of course doesn't mean that good games are gone. As mentioned before, Mass Effect was a great title. I recently played BioShock which may have been a bit too easy, but was a great game nontheless. Currently I'm playing Half-Life 2 including the 2 add-ons(, I'm not done with 2 though yet, so please no spoilers). They're a bit older, but still really good. Does anyone know if and when Episode 3 comes out?

The point of the episodes was to lessen the time between the different expansions. LIES. THE EPISODE 3 IS A LIE!

Valve seems to be having a lot of problems keeping up with their release schedule. The various Half-Life episodes are the most obvious example, but even the content additions to TF2 have been really slow. The claim has been that L4D was taking up all their time, but I have a hard time believing that given its brevity.

I played it a lot but I didn't manage to beat it, I got very far though!

The absence of any kind of save/password system was a major let down for that game IMO. Playing it through took a long time, no Mario warp tunnels here! Staying sharp all the time was difficult, and for some people leaving the console on while doing other stuff (like sleeping) wasn't an option.

I still remember how I got into one of the later UN controlled 'towns' with my last life for the first time. No one ever shot you there (and you didn't kill them out of fear for the white paratroopers). So I walked into a house. Enemy soldier, nothing new here, he might have info. BANG! I'm dead. Yeah, that was real fun....

I really don't have the time to play a game for so long. I'd like to beat the hard mode at some point, but there are so many other games I need to play in the next 3 months, though I should do more work for Uni.

Is there a distinction between North and South Korean gamers? Does the North or South have the advantage numbers wise.

I would think advantage goes to the South Koreans, but after seeing one of Kim Jong Il's "patriotism" flag displays then I can't help but picture 3000 twelve-year olds locked in a stinky basement somewhere.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was a Golden Throne-like contraption that uses the souls of North Koreans to power their servers.

Well, in South Korea they play Starcraft all day inside a house.

In North Korea they spend all day in a shack playing Kimcraft. It's similar to Starcraft, only your units are all pictures of Kim Jong Il, and they have 9,999 life and can fly. (It's really easy to beat the campaign.)

Bionic comando was the first game I played that had a curse word "DAMN". I was shocked for days, lol. Play blaster master, Low-G Man, and the first two Castlevanias. Alucard dosn't have anything on Simon Belmont. Anybody remember the F.X. Nintindo book books, they were surprisingly good.

And whilst you're pointing and shouting at the boogeyman in the corner, you're missing the burglar coming in through the window.

Well, Duh! Because they had a giant Mining ship. If you had a giant mining ship you would drill holes in everything too, before you'd destory it with a black hole

I hail from an age of using tapes to load up your games, and being able to pick some of them up for £2 brand new.

Fond memories of the Dizzy games. Good puzzlers though.

Moving into the console age, I stuck with Nintendo until the Gamecube, which I had in addition to a PS2. Great many brilliant games have come and gone, yet I am always put off by the games with rabid fanboys.

For example, Halo. I just don't see the appeal. I've played a bit of it, and failed to spot the ground breaking bits. Perhaps I didn't play it long enough, perhaps it's overblown. I dunno. Gears of War deeply frustrated me so I won't be dabbling in that again. But God of War. Those games, to my mind, fully deserve their status. Perhaps not revolutionary gaming, but most definitely fun. Lots of fun. If I get narked off with the world. stick in God of War 2, and have a good old fashioned rampage. That usually sorts me out.

But it strikes me that many games have forgotten they are meant to be fun. Challenging is one thing, bastard hard is quite another and I simply don't want to play those. My consoles are there to give me some downtime when I'm bored or stressed. Hence why I consider 'We Love Katamari' one of the greatest games ever devised. It's incredibly satisfying, and just the right level of challenge.

Except for the Simon's quest one. There is a line in there that says something along the lines of, "I'm going to drink your blood like it was cherry soda!".

I heard that the new Ninja Gaidens are just lessons in frustration. I think that's where "new/old school" gamers differ. Old farts like me grew up on games that had low quality graphics, but they maximized the fun. Beating a dead horse here, but look at Super Mario Bros. You could jump, swim, and throw fireballs. That's it, you had a controller with 5 buttons (3 that were used during gameplay). You can only do so much with 3 buttons, and Nintendo did pretty well. When the game becomes more about pretty, shiny graphics then the fun factor takes a serious dip. Not saying that great looking games cannot be fun (there was a crap load of bad games on the older systems), but the trends in graphics first games tend to lead towards crap instead of quality.

I totally agree on Katamari.

Dizzy was one I never beat. You can brag about beating Halo, but who cares. Actually beating Bionic Commando was a huge deal, especially considering the lack of password. Exploding head time!

for me, video games started to suck not long after pong.

Give me a game that is about gameplay, not pretty pictures.

Defender had more gameplay and required skill than most games today. Even frogger.
