Thinking of Joining a Davinite Loge
|
Hey guys and gals,
I've just found a really old Chimera that I remember buying back in '96. It has so many layers of paint that I can't even see the rivets anymore. Taking off the paint isn't an issue as I have some pretty decent remover plus a multi-tool. My only problem is that it doesn't have a turret and I can only assume it's been lost through the ages. All my spare Chimera turrets have been used on Sentinels and I'm loathe to tear them off. I'm basically after any and all ideas on an alternative turret that might work on the chassis. I have a huge bits box so anything sensible might be an option.
Cheers

Spare predator or razorback turrent?
If not either a sponson that fits on top or plasticard a turret and stick a surplus multilaser from your sentinels.

Maybe just go for a cupola with the standard ring and mount a sentinel multi-laser to it, kind of like I've done for the trucks on my blog?

I made a custom Chimera out of a snap-tite truck kit....the lascannon turrets off of the Shadowsword works perfect, and
the lascannon works well enough for a multi-laser.

Awww, thats so sweet Flinty
I actually havent finished the shield parts, but I discovered the track guard small pieces are about the perfect size. An easy bit of trimming and they'll fit a pintle multi laser or heavy bolter jsut fine. Also- the land speeder or attack bike heavy bolters would fit quite well for this, but, so would any IG leftovers from weapon teams kits.

Well keeping the track record of me being an idiot, I have found a spare chimera turret. But, now that you guys and gals have made my brain work (damn you all) I'm not happy to use it.
I'm gonna look through some of the galleries of people mentioned here.
I already have plans for my spare predator turret, that's going on a chimera i'm building out of parts not needed from my basilisk kit.
My current top idea is to use the chimera turret I have found but sort of change it into the FW hellhound turret with the barrel on the side.

I havent updated it lately- I've been doing alot of sculpting on it, and while the putty sets I switch gears and work on my squiggoth(another thread in need of updating lol)
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/30/246737.page is the thread,
a quicky pic of the ring mount I did for a Meltacannon. Should be alot simpler for a multilaser or HB
I went with the hatch off the old accesory sprue- the new hatch is a single hatch that openw to the back of the ring mount- the old one opens in two halves- one to each side of the crew man- which seems like it makes more sense from a protection standpoint. The gun shield bits I plan on attaching in front of the melta cannisters on the sides- the track guard bits angle back nicely and wont require too much trimming. Automatically Appended Next Post: Also- I know the pic is blurry- my cam sucks

I've used a dreadnaught arm on it's side before. It sounds odd but with a bit of suitable detailing the flat profile suits a chimera chasis ( I think so any way!)

Here's how I did mine (PIP). It's basically a plasticard structure with some random gubbinz and a multilaser attached to it. I did make a separate housing for the multilaser though, I felt it looked better that way.
More pics in the gallery. If you want, I can try and take some pics of the fully painted chimera as well.

CommissarKhaine's conversion has given me the push I need. I've decided to try and do something similar and here's what i have so far:
The main armament is going to be an autocannon I have spare from a HW kit but on the other side I'm gonna stick a heavy stubber out of a smaller depression. Sort of similar to what a Panzer II had.
At the moment the Chimera is coated in a nice paint stripper where it will sit in a bag for the next ten hours. It smells like an ass that's been passed through another ass.

I have an update for you lucky, lucky people. I have managed to get off about four or five layers of paint from my Chimera. I really don't remember painting any part of this tank blue or even red for that matter. Must've happened when I let a friend of mine borrow it for a tournament about 10 years ago.
Anyway, managed to make this turret up this morning. I love it!!! Thank you everybody for your suggestions!!
Very Panzer II. Just need to decide what to have on the hull mount...

Thats a nice look. Based on some feedback I got on my Russes I would recommend trying to beef up the turret at the rear of the guns. At the moment they have nowhere to recoil to and very little space around them for all the associated worky bits. Can you bulk out some recoil chambers at the back o fthe turret for them? (especially the Autocannon)

Nice idea it looks great but how does the Ammo get into the Autocannon it looks much too tight?

That's pretty cool looking.
My friend used a Predator turret on one of his chimera's because he liked the looks of it better and it made it look more like a Bradley AFV. He also put a piece of plasticard behind the port firing weapon holes to cover them up. The Army does this to the older Bradleys because the Port Firing weapon concept was a failure.

For the hull I always go heavy flamer so when I get my guard up close these work great for getting stuff out of cover , the heavy bolter only hits once on a regular roll anyway . I feel heavy flamer is also better at killing marines than the heavy bolter it forces more armor saves .

Nice turret infilTRAITOR! I especially like the dual barrels. I agree with Flinty though, the autcannon doens't look like it can take ammo (or recoil, for that matter); adding a small plasticard box around and/or behind would be a quick and easy fix. I like what you did with the old weapons port; what bit did you use for it?

I agree with Slann, the Heavy flamer is preferable to the H.bolter.
As for the autocannons: It looks sweet, but I am curious how it will work game-wise? Are you just gonna make it a "counts-as" heavy bolter turret?

Hmm...I've always imagined that the autocannon recoils only slightly backwards as on the model it doesn't really have anywhere to go. But if it will make everybody happy I will make a small protrusion on the back later on tonight.

A Chimera I've just turned green used to have a Predator turret on it. I didn't like how modern it looked so I changed it with a Chimera turret with a home-made barrel. And you say it is a failure but you just wait til the Zombipocalypse comes and those firing ports will be the best thing ever made!

Thank you. Will be doing the box. Everybody is always talking about the box. And if you mean the optics on where the barrel used to be it's from the Aegis defence line box and cut in half to fit.

No no, I'm gonna have it count as a Chimera with an autocannon while the heavy stubber will be counted as a pintle-mounted stubber. I just wanted to do it differently from the norm is all. It's WYSISYG to an extent lol
broxus wrote:Brother, a few questions how hard is it to put a predator turret ona Chimera? I really like your conversion. Can you post more pictures please?
Using a Predator turret to a Chimera is simple. Best way I found to do it is to use rare earth magnets as the turret and hull don't gel well together.

It's a VERY high cal. machinegun.. I'm pretty sure it has recoil .

Thanks! I'll be getting my defence line shortly, and it'll be a nice addition for my PBS chimera.

You can take your peer pressure and shove it somewhere horrible!!
CommissarKhaine wrote:It's a VERY high cal. machinegun.. I'm pretty sure it has recoil .
There's no denying it will have recoil only not that much. The model itself doesn't really allow for much recoil as the barrel can only go so far. I consider it to be something akin to a 20mm cannon than a machine gun.
But, you're all bastards and I hate you. I have done what you asked and here it is:
Excuse the paint job at the moment. It's only been factory coated and nothing special has been done to it yet. Gonna be doing that later on today and taking stage-by-stage pictures as I've had a lot of people asking how I paint my tanks.
I have also added, as advised, the flamer on the hull mounter gun.
