Edited - This thread started off with me fiddling with some Ogryn substitutes for my Guard force. It has now just been expanded to aim for a full Deathwing force as follows

More Edited - After 6 months away from my footling tools due to a painfully long house sale/purchase process its time to get back to it. 3 new units in progress!

Jim Raynor (Belial)

5 Ghosts (Scout snipers with missile launcher+Nova)

Goliath class assault walker (Dreadnought with TLAC and ML)

Viking class assault walker (Dreadnought with either 2x TLAC or TLAC & ML)

Tychus's Boys (4x terminators with Assault cannon with Swann as sergeant)
Specialist support (5x terminators with either Cyclone or Heavy Flamer, depending on the opponent and General Warfield as sergeant)

Allied Zealots (5x Terminators with Lighning Claws, including Belial's medic and standard rules. Also added a Dark Templar sergeant model)

Diamondback (Land speeder with Multi-melta and assault cannon)

Vultures (Ravenwing bikes with 2x meltas and something on the sarge)
Hellion (Ravenwing Attack Bike with swappable HB or MM)

Siege Tank (Vindicator)

Banshee (Landspeeder Typhoon/Stormtalon)
Dropship (Stormraven)
Odin/Thor (Land Raider Helios)
SCV (Techmarine)

----------------------

Having played through Starcraft 2 a few more times than strictly necessary I decided to see if I could pull off a believable conversion into 40k. The final idea will be to use them as Ogryn counts-as for my Guard. Currently working on a random trooper, but I am planning on working up Jim Raynor as the sergeant/BONE-head and Tychus as a heavy weapon trooper.

I'm quite happy with the layered visor effect and the C-14 Impaler with box-mag. Still have to finish re-positioning the power fist arm to support the rifle, however I'm thinking that the power fist is a bit too obvious and would get in the way as using them as Ogryns. Still investigating other options, athough the terminator storm shield arm might be a contender. If anyone has any spares please let me know if we can work out an appropriate swap

Anyway, on with the show:

Next to do is to finish off with the arms and then come up with something to use as the exhaust vents out of the top of the armour. Then on to bulking up the thighs. I've never been satisfied with terminator thighs as I feel they are faaaaaaaarrr too slender for what is pretty much the largest chunk of muscle in the body I also need to try and bulk up the neck-ring a bit and see if I can get the Terran front lights in there.

Wow, really promising!!!

I haven't played Starcraft 2 for lack of a proper computer (which helps keep my sanity, as my XBOX is already pumping too much of it), but was a fan of the first one back in the days , so the Terran Marines are a bit far from my memory...

Would you have some nice pics so that we can compare?

Also, dakka user TiB has had some good results with shoulder pads as visors : TiB's Warpcrafters

Maybe it could help!!

The gun is really nice as well, what's the metal part? I guess it's non-GW... Is it the same you used on your Stalkers?

Good luck, I'll be following this!!!

Thanks Yggdrasil.

I'm using images from in-game for most of the comparisons (and it definately won't be a totally accurate conversion) but you can see some wallpapers here.

I think I have seen TiB's idea before which triggered some of my ideas. I think that looks great for a fully closed up visor, but the new SC2 marine visors seem to have 2 separate visors (one tinted and 1 carbon fibre protective) and I'm trying to capture that aesthetic a bit.

There is also this intro cinematic that is rather useful

Very well done. I like the layered visor. I always thought of them being just a tad smaller than a power armored marine, but this conversion is awesome.

Thanks guys. Some more GS work to be done today and then more pics.

@Shiznaft - The scale seems to change depending on which picture you look at I've run through a bunch of different source images both in game and on the 'net and size runs from a bit bigger than human to massive. I've chosen to go for the larger end of the scale, primarily to fit the Ogryn idea.

@Yggdrasil - The gun is made up from a couple of Pulse Rifle barrels, the box mag off the storm bolter and the Hasslefree CAD gun #12 (Turned upside down and trimmed). I've run out of them now though so I will need to order more to finish the squad off

@Kanluwen - Hmm.. that does sound pretty neat. I'll scoot about the net and see what I can find. I've found quite a few nice reference images in the Terran videos on the SC2 website, especially the opening cinematic with Tychus

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Right. Done some more work on the GS armour upgrades and the off-hand re-positioning. Its nice having holidays available to fiddle about with random stuff

First of all are the turbine vents coming out the top of the armour. I think these are a major part of the aesthetic and wouldn't mind some feedback on whther they look ok. I've also fiddled with the power fist a bit but really need to extend the arm singificantly to allow it to hold the gun. I think I will need to investigate a different arm option to be honest. The Terran armour has an elongated forearm so I might see what I can do with that instead, but that will remove the power fist as an option.

I've also moved on to GS up the various armour pates somewhat. I've used 1 layer to hide the gap between the visor and the neck armour and then added some extra to form the front lights. Also added a layer to the top to form around the top vents a bit and bulked out the first leg. This is my first attempt at major GS sculpting, especially of hard armour plates, so if anyone has any hints tips or comments please feel free to add

Anyone got any tips on forming hard edges to plates?

Some more incremental advances. Put together another 3 torsos with visors down. The last torso will have a partially open visor to allow Tychus to have his cigar Also whomped up a suitably oversized chain-gun for Tychus. I don't often go for macro weapons, but I think this thing looks like it might have enough ammo capacity for a serious engagement

Tried to get one of them to look like he's looking to the left. Might need to change this later... See how it looks wil some proper arms.

And finally a detail shot of the bulked-up leg armour. I am tentatively wandering along the path of sculpting and seem to have rediscovered that you get a much better surface finish if the last GS layer is really thin over a properly cured base layer

Next steps are to get the turbine vents on the new torsos and start with GSing the collar areas. Also waiting for a Storm Shield arm to see what I can do for the off-hand that doesn't involve a power fist.

@Imperal Monkey - I hate doing faces, so the visors will mostly be closed However one of the visors will be at least partyly open with some kind of head scavenged from somewhere. On another I will be trying to do the skull symbol from Jim Raynor's armour.

A tiny step forward and a continuation of my penchant for "borrowing" other people's artwork to base my models on

Using this as a basis I've started modifying some legs. Its surprisingly hard to make Terminators look like they have normal anatomy and a comfortable standing position I also didn't realise until just now that Storm Bolters have 2 types of box-mag, one being twice the thickness of the other. Will cause problems if I try to do too many 2-handed firing poses, but I think I can get around it.

Some bits are obviously missing (like shoulder pads and, y'know, feet and hands and suchlike...) but I like it so far. I have yet to GS up the other torsos I prepared recently, but that will probably wait until I need to do a lot of GS at once.

As a major Starcraft fan, I must say HOLY CRAP!!!!

Great job! It would be awesome to see an army of Terrans. Now that I think of it I think Zerg-Nids and Protoss-Eldar+Something else would also be really cool.

That gun looks quite similar to the Avatar ones, certainly the ones the big walking Dreadnought things wield. Looks good though.

Thanks guys. Tyranids already look an awful lot like Zerg due to the constant cross-pollination between IP A Protoss based Eldar force would rock. Zealots actually fit rather well as Banshees.

Regarding the Avatar comparison, I guess there are a limited number of general designs for oversized RFACs

Anyway... some more leg work done today. Planning on having the ever-so dynamic Mr Raynor as the squad sergeant/BONE'ead and felt he needed to be a bit more active than the normal Terminator stance. Again, ignore the feet and lack of hands and you'll hopefully see where I'm trying to go.

Sweet. But raynor got a custom sniper rifle thingy, or is the gun he's go now just a proxy?

@Rose - Raynor only gets the sniper rifle in that survival mission underground. Earlier in the campaign he's armed with an Impaler like the other marines. I was debating if he should get a sniper rifle, but these guys are supposed to be counts-as Ogryns and a sniper rifle wouldn't fit particularly well

Another intermediate GS stage. This sculpting lark sure requires patience

Got one leg bulked up fully and polished as smooth as I can get it. Another leg with the initial armour bulk, and 2 further torsos with the visor collar and at least the start of the top armour plating. Probably about halfway there on the guys I've got sorted out so far. I need to do 1 more set of legs and another torso, then I guess its on to try and sculpt some hands...
