Inspired by other blogs on this forum, such as the fantastic works of Smiling Assassin and InfilTRAITOR I have elected to start reworking my own IG army. It doesnt have a huge number of fancy conversions, and neither is my painting the best in the world. Over time however I hope to be able to have progressed in terms of modelling skill and painting prowess. I am currently half way through an infantry squad or two, along with other 'bits and pieces'.

I'm also hoping to embark on a halftrack APC and some rough riders who will ride these:

Any ideas on how I would make those in model form is greatly appreciated. Oh, and apologies on the awful image.

My current work in progress is weathering a Basilisk (Nicknamed 'Ol' Rusty'), inspired by fantastic painting and weathering techniques I have seen around. I am aware the tracks dont join currently (as the model was made 7 years ago by me, and badly at that). That will be fixed in due course.

Comments and advice are seriously appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Osh'

I like the gunshield how'd you do that? If I remember rightly theres a kit for that bike thing (hetttenkrad or something completely different I believe) somewhere so I'd look for it on Google......

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. It's because we are what we are. For all our faults we stand for law and light.

The Gunshield is made from ordinary card, with several coats of PVA to make it solidify. I just really detest the original Basilisk gunshield.

Just a heads up that Tamiya uses Imperial scale (ie 1/48) so you'll have to convert GW's metric 28mm. So be sure to note scale when you're buying. Other than that, quite welcome!

It's a lower case i!!!!

I am loving the Basilisk. Reminds me very much of the Hummel and is the sort of piece I want to aquire in the near future. I cannot wait to see how it pans out. Also, the tracks can be fixed by applying mud to the tracks. If you're not keen on adding mud then bits of it can be cured with some track guard but the ones on the front would be a pain. They may just need lifting off and placed again.

Using the Kettenkrad for rough riders is a great idea and would be very 40k. I, myself, am planning on using old german motorcycles for mine when I eventually get around to it so it would be amazing to see what you come up with!

No, I remain correct, as I was capitalising as you are a place, person or thing (most likely the latter ). I will go with the mud option, as its the most enjoyable part of tanks to some extent. It also needs its camo netting, transfers and details, but other than that its mainly done now.

Thanks again. I've been hunting around and the conversion should be possible, so I'll probably have a go at a test model later in the week and see how that turns out.

Update.

Operation 'Kettenkrad rough rider' has been a major failure. However salvation is at hand, and I found this in my bitz box:

So it looks like I'll have old school cavalry instead. Not happy with the lance, but I'll get there.

The Half-track Chimera however IS working out. The free mounted tracks and card front are drying. Pictures in due course. Should be finished by the end of next week perhaps.

Finally, I've finished a squad of infantry. Forgive my unimaginative paint scheme. Such a nice day that pictures just had to be taken!

Comments, advice and criticism is always appreciated.

Thanks for the kind words. You have made a spelling error. It's spelt 'Basilisk'.

What models are you going to use for Fiddler, Tavore, etc?

Will you add little bones to the models?

I was wondering when someone would recognise the army name and connect with the series of books by Steven Erikson.

Currently, Fiddler is a normal trooper/Veteran Sergeant, though converted and I'm slowly building a tiny violin for him to carry.

Tavore I still have no idea. Don't particuarly like her as a character. I might end up using Dujek Onearm as a character instead.

I'm also working on some of the squads from the books, such as Helian's, Gesler's and Cord's.

Keneb, Blistig and Faradon Sort are all WIP, but in the end they will just look like glorified IG.

Skulls are a recurring motif in the army currently, and dog-tags are painted to look like tiny bones held on a string.

Finally, Quick Ben will be a Primaris Psyker.

Ah-ha! I finally found the blog that spawned the awesome "grass pictures" from the show-off thread! Very nice work so far, you really look like you take your time painting those vehicles, and the infantry aren't too shabby either. I never read those books, but maybe it will be worth checking them out so I know what you are going for in this blog!

Keep up the good work here, chap!

Thanks for the kind words! The Vehicles take ages! But the finished product is worth it in my eyes. The Infantry need work, but I'll get there. The books are all 'swords, magic and fantasy' but I love them. The characters were just so inspiring that they are being 'tranferred' into the 41st Millenium. I'd definitely say to look Steven Erikson up though.

You could have T'Amber as well. She is probably a better fit for the 14th actually. Quick Ben is frickin' awesome though.

Makes me want to buy IG jus to build the 4th!

You could use Fiddler as Trooper Marbo. Doesn't that guy have special demolitions rules or something?

I thought about T'Amber, but I didnt really like her as a character either (that and I wouldnt do her justice in model form).

Quick Ben, Kalam and Keneb (with Grub in tow) will definitely feature though.

Fiddler will most likely be a 'counts as' but I'll try to finish him and squad first and then worry about rules later. Fiddler, Tarr, Koryk, Smiles, Cuttle are all WIP. I'm probably going to convert Bottle out of a sanctioned pysker and then Corabb will be a Commissar perhaps. So it should be a tidy Hardened Veteran squad with a demo charge or two (aka cussers)

Overall though I chose the 14th because the Bridgeburners was 1. Too hard to convert and 2. On too small a scale

Not yet! So don't say anything! I mean to go pick it up this week if I have the time.

Toll the hounds wasnt that great in places. There were big sections of the Tiste Andii where I was just like 'skip...skip'. Reaper's Gale and The Bonehunters have been my favourite two I think.

I like the weathered look each armor plate on the wings sports... it looks like a well-used but well-serviced vehicle... I can just imagine the Guard techs bolting (not welding, that doesn't exist in the 40th millennium) scavenged plates of armor from other valks... kudos! If I ever get around to getting a valk I will remember to keep this technique in mind.
