I have dealt with many an a-hole in my day, but more often than not it is never much of a problem.
Have you ever gone over to someones house, and when you get there they start to show you all sorts of random ass crap that THEY thought was interesting on the webz? Not like stuff that IS interesting, stuff that is made to have fun poked at it. Like this whole fad with the bike acrobatics. I am sorry, but that crap is NOT that cool; sure they do tricks and etc... but how is it amazing? I really do not know.
So, you hang out with this cat every so often, and he basically takes anything you say, and turns it against you. One of the main reasons this "Real life Troll" will snap, is if you disagree with them. So you say tomato, they say NUCLEAR FREAKING EMOTIONAL BOMB... extremely annoying tripe if I have ever seen it. The best part is when they pretend that you are being a douche... after forcing you to watch endless clips of... new and amazing crap. The interwebz is a fun thing kids, but if all you have to do is talk about the internet... you need to get a life.
When this Real life Troll gets offended, it is like the world just ended. No friendly jab is ever taken in kind, and the emotional maturity meter is most definitely running on empty. How much do any of us really care about YouTube? I love YouTube, but the end of it would not spell a disaster for me, and the loss of LolCats... well, I think that would strike a nerve in all honesty.
You know that guy who laughs at jokes in a theater? The ones that were designed to be laughed at in the theater? Yeah... that is me, and I cannot tell you how much it amuses me that someone would take offense that you are laughing. Do these people not know what laughing means? Could it be that they did not understand the joke? Or could it be the fact that they hate you, and they will always hate you, because they made a decision to hate you long before they even met you?
Talking smack is all well and good until you start to protect your precious internet clips... that everyone has access too... but only you know their whereabouts. Anyway... Wrex needed a good ole vent because these real life internet personalities piss me the feth off... It is one thing to talk about this and that and etc... but when I bring up education in this country and how hard it is to get anywhere... to the goddam troll, and they go off about how stupid you are because you are just a zombie... I find myself thinking about how hard it is to not lay a freaking pimp smack across their delusional ass-shaped face.
Share your "Real life Troll" stories here. And remember kids, this is the interwebz... it is serious frakking business in this snap. OH, and my real life troll likes to try and convince people that 9/11 was an inside job... BUT, he will not ever say that he believes it is the case... a "truther" with a truth complex . God I hate some people sometimes...
"Note"
There is no reason to use this thread for flame-baiting, it is up to you all to make sure this does not happen. Real life does not apply to situations affiliated with Dakka, and even if you managed to meet someone on Dakka that you do not like, I am sure that the Mods would appreciate if you did not mention that they are from here. Common courtesy can go a long way here.
Another thing, in case you did not notice this story has feth all to do with Dakka.

Avantgarde trolled too hard in the sloth monster thread, and now might be b&. Which is too bad.
That's not an IRL troll though.
Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da over arf don't, so 'e 'as to hit 'em all anyway or run fer it.
Real life trolls are pretty rare, at least from my experience... They often keep very discreet tabs on their outside activities, often limiting themselves to a maximum of 2 hours of sunlight per day. More than that... and man, there will be hell to pay...
I know right? Wrex trolls so hard it is ridiculous...
I would like to add that Dakka has an amazing feature called the ignore button, so that you can avoid all those damn Wrex comments... It is made for situations like this. You can also address any issues you have with my statements when I make them, or through the P.M. Or... you can continue approach me in this fashion.
If I am not funny to you... good job? I dunno, the point of pictures eh .
Wiki wrote:Application of the term troll is highly subjective. Some readers may characterize a post as trolling, while others may regard the same post as a legitimate contribution to the discussion, even if controversial. The term is often used as an ad hominem strategy to discredit an opposing position by attacking its proponent.
Often, calling someone a troll makes assumptions about a writer's motives. Regardless of the circumstances, controversial posts may attract a particularly strong response from those unfamiliar with the robust dialogue found in some online, rather than physical, communities. Experienced participants in online forums know that the most effective way to discourage a troll is usually to ignore him or her, because responding tends to encourage trolls to continue disruptive posts — hence the often-seen warning: "Please do not feed the trolls".
Here is another link to some good info on this. As I said before, you can ignore me (even without the ignore button), but messing around with a few jokes every so often hardly classifies me as a troll. But anyway... I do know that I can get on peoples nerves, but I am not intentionally trying to offend anyone. Take offense if you must, but creating a flame-war, over your perceptions of a person is... "Please do not feed the trolls", but moving along.
I have no problem with making this the, what makes a troll thread. We can discuss this subject, and learn a bit more about it by doing so. The fact that anyone is an online troll at any given time is not even realistic at all though right? I suppose you could say that I am a full blown internet troll, but my experience in the OT forum does speak differently about that.
There are many types of disruptive users that are not trolls. Reversion warriors, POV warriors, cranks, impolite users, and vocal critics of Wikipedia structures and processes are not necessarily trolls.
...
...Trolling is a deliberate, bad faith attempt to disrupt the editing of Wikipedia. Ignorance is not trolling. Genuine dissent is not trolling. Biased editing, even if defended aggressively, is in itself not trolling. By themselves, misguided nominations, votes, and proposed policy are not trolling. They are only trolling when they are motivated by a program of malice rather than ignorance or bias. This requires a judgment of the personal motivation for another's action. Such a judgment can never be made with anything approaching certainty. This fact should always be kept in mind when one is tempted to label someone a troll.
When you try to decide if someone is a troll, strive to assume they are not. Explain errors politely and reasonably; point them towards policies, the manual of style and relevant past discussions. Do not conclude they are a troll until they have shown complete inability or unwillingness to listen to reason or to moderate their position based upon the input of others. Even in that case, it is likely better to remain silent and let others conclude the obvious instead of calling someone a troll and creating even more mayhem. It is better to humor a troll for too long than to drive away a sincere but misguided user. Remember and apply the principles laid out at w:Wikipediaon't bite the newcomers.
I have no arguments about being slightly disruptive, which is something I am trying to work on; but a Troll, I am simply not. If you would like to discuss this, please do; if you would rather insult me, send it via P.M. and we can duke it out there. I would not mind the fan-mail ... funny stuff.
I would also add that I was probably being a bit unfair to the Real Life Troll that I was talking about with the posting of this topic. Taking into account someones background is always a solid way to go when assessing the character of that individual. I have known people that most would consider total A-holes, but they turn out to be some of the greatest people to hang out with in the entire world. Being negative does not make you a Troll, and I would be hard-pressed to actually say that I know a scrooges in real life.
This article is really quite interesting though. Defining Trolls through the context of Wiki is very tricky, but you start to get a good idea of what the term actually means. The history of the term "Troll" is interesting as well, that was addressed in the first article.
meta-wiki wrote:...Inflammatory edits usually come from users who have a minority or controversial opinion and who sincerely believe that this view is inadequately represented by Wikipedia, and therefore will seek reasonable ways to properly represent their views; trolls, however, will generally not seek consensus but will instead insist on a position without any regard for compromise...
...
...People who passionately believe in what they are writing also sometimes behave in a way that may make them appear to be a troll. Many non-trolls refuse to compromise, and, at times, compromise may not even be the best solution.
Wiki does most definitely frames this topic in a very intriguing way. I would think that it is usually quite hard to determine when someone is actually Trolling. I often see strongly worded opinions (having some of my own on occasion) that come across as too blunt to be honest. More often than not, these situations get dealt with very quickly on Dakka, and as I have said in the past, they draw a very consistent line of rule enforcement.

Wow... that was mighty depressing right tharr.
I take that to mean that you are unhappy, do not enjoy life, and this means nothing to you. Not sure if that is correct though.
You can delve deeper if you feel that it is appropriate.

Im not sure if i have ever encountered a troll , but for sure i know a TFG which drives everyone crazy.
( is there a difference between the 2 ? )
Maybe not, I am not too sure about that one.
If someone goes out of there way to make your life miserable (and the line is relatively obvious on this one), they are clearly a Troll. But TFG, I would take to mean that the person is not even trying to do anything at all. I cannot honestly say that I have stuck around to find out if someone is a TFG more often than not. I have known TFG, but even in those circumstances the problems had more to do with the environment, than the actual offense.

Complaining does nothing if you don't do anything about it. all you have done is state trolling is annoying and linking some stupid pictures with some links about the def. of trolling.
So let me get this straight. There are users trolling a thread and accusing the person who started the thread of being a troll, whilst he happens to be complaining about trollers.
That's quite twisted. To arrange this must have taken some kind of tactical geniu......

What is your solution mate? Go out and destroy these people? I am not sure if a few of the people in this thread have ever heard of conversation, because this is not some sort delta force planning committee.
As Ketara mentioned, this could be a cunning plan. Yes... a cunning plan .
Anyway, thank you to those who did not feel the need to start a flamewar against me... to those who did, thank you for the laughs I suppose..

Go out and destroy them.. that would be stupid trolls are just bullies they only annoy you to get a reaction, your reaction is this thread. trolls would be laughing @ you now.
So all a troll gets is a laugh because of some false sense of superiority?
Do you know what Carrie did when they laughed at her? Well... DO YOU!!!
Let them laugh and eat cake while I load up this surreal cartoon bomb, made out of superior brands of funny, and backed up by even better styles of forced interpretation... damn you... damn you all...
Why don't the villains win? I have always wanted to see a movie where the "bad-guy" wins the day... you know... for the bad guys and snap. They have rights to laugh too man, and apparently their laughter is done in code.
So, instead of Hahahahaha... you get Yeryeryeryer... or something along those lines
Part of me wanted to be flippant and snide about how many damn links you're showing me - don't you like anything that isn't on Youtube of Wikipedia?
But then I realized I live a sad, sad life. So I turned off my monitor and cried myself to sleep.
On a humourous note - while looking for tarps in my friend's storage shed, we found a video called 'your mom's a slut, she takes it in the butt' and I can't stop giggling at it.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.
