Hi all! Happy to have found Dakka after many years of no minis gaming.

The particulars

Real Name: Bryan
Age: 42
Location: Madison, WI
Family: Married, 2 boys (8 and 10)
Job: Marketing Manager for a Health Insurance Company (that's 2 strikes!)
Hobbies: Introducing my sons to the pile of games in the basement.
Favorite TV Shows: Top Gear, Big Bang Theory, Breaking Bad, 30 Rock
Favorite Movies: LotR, Office Space, Tim Burton, Mel Brooks

The reason I'm getting back into minis gaming

So, I'm in my early 40s and have been around the gaming block once or twice. Heck, I used to work in a game store in college. Back then, when 1st edition Space Hulk came out, I bought all the gear and expansions. It was the game that hit the table the most often. We even played 3 player triple blind games with a GM to tell each player what he saw on his individual board. Space Hulk was our game!

Also, this was the late 80s and early 90's. This was the time I consider the Golden Age of Games Workshop. This was when they came out with some of their greatest games: Space Hulk, Man O' War, Space Marine Epic, Warhammer Quest, Fury of Dracula, and tons more. This was also when they first started moving Warhammer Fantasy Battles and Warhammer 40K out of a standalone book and into the big box editions with plastic starter armies. And of course, I bought it all. Easy access to new releases and an employee discount - a dangerous combo!

Then, I got kinda bored with the whole Games Workshop scene. It all started to homogenize for me. I also got sidetracked with my own game design career and didn't have time to play GW anymore. Then I got married and had kids. So, goodbye expendable time and money.

And then... then this goddamn new edition of Space Hulk comes out, and it's turned my life upside down.

I painted it all up. I haven't painted a figure in 15 years.

And than I took all those old Warhammer 40K boxes off the shelf. And I'm thinking maybe I need to pick up the 5th edition starter set. So I did. And then Battle for Skull Pass.

I showed it to my kids. We each have our own armies now (Marines for the 10 year old, Orks for the 8 year old, Necrons for Dad - yeah I know they need an update, but I dig undead).

We can build a cool big game table in the basement. The weather is turning. We'll need something to do while the snow is flying.

And you know, model terrain has gotten really awesome in the past 15 years. Look at the variety! And the quality of everything is just... tremendous! And wow look at those Gale Force Nine accessories. I need those!

But it is all a lot more expensive now.... Well, heck, it was always expensive. And I make more money than I did back then. I can afford it. Sure I can.

When I left the house today, the kitchen table was a pile of plastic and paint.

Then I found Dakka.

Yeah, this may be a problem!

And yeah I used to be a kinda-famous game designer.

You can read all about it at BoardGameGeek, right here.

Looking forward to the fun!!

Wow! I used to play Fantasy Warriors all the time! I'd completely forgot about it. For a while there, I thought it would eclipse Warhammer. Actually, my first Warhammer Fantasy Battles army was Wood Elves, the Celtic ones sculpted by Mark Copplestone. Have you done any games design work lately? Because GW could use some help, or a tactical nuclear strike, I'm not sure some days.

Well it has to be said that welcome back

You have obviously got something out of the hobby before so there is the no reason why you cannot do the same as specially if you have children that might be able to participate in whatever hobby activities, you do for example teaching them to play, which all go towards a good childhood.

Really interesting story on BGG! I only wish I was around during the golden age of board gaming... born the year after space hulk first hit shelves. I can only look in admiration at the copies of the much sought after 80's releases on ebay and the like.

Great to hear you're getting into it with your kids. I have a girlfriend and my dad still thinks I'm gay for playing warhammer.
