Forever alone

I'm kind of sick of the idiots I see on CoD4, Warcraft III, and other games I play online. I've found myself going back to a lot more single-player games like Knights of the Old Republic and Diablo II. Anyone else feeling this?

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

Some days L4D on Live feels like Mos Eisley (what is, a wretched hive of scum and villainy, trebek).

I mean seriously. Between getting booted from lobbies for having a guest and the sheer, unbelievable amount of rage quitters (insane amounts of rage quitters) it's almost impossible to finish a full game on versus. Co-op campaigns, though, are very nice.

Also, with the new Last Stand DLC for DoW2, I'm discovering that MP isn't always a bad thing. I usually play with one main friend, so we often have a random join us, and so far I've been fairly impressed with the randoms we get.

Sometimes, when I'm alone...

Naaawww. I'll save the perversion for later.

I tend to play some games offline, mainly because I'm too lazy to connect to Live. That, and on some games like Warcraft III and Starcraft, I can't play competitively for crap.

Some people play to win, some people play for fun. Me? I play to kill toy soldiers.

I can hardly stomach online gaming, it's so UGH. I used to play CS back when it was good and not something you had to pay for, same with TFC and even the odd game of Battlefield 1942, but god damn it, online gaming is so horribly competitive and "feth YOU CHEATER"..

I am noticing with the Last Stand though that whenever me and my brother play alongside a random person than that random person never says a thing.

I like playing online but most of the time I enjoy the story instead of some youngster shouting F-bombs every where when your trying to have a nice conversation with another player.

I prefer games where you have to actually follow a story, rather than "Go to X spot on the map and kill X monsters, that are just standing around waiting to be killed."

The only games I will play online are FPSs. Partly because of the wondrous catharsis that is embarrassing a griefer, and partly because they are the only games (besides Madden, which is much, much worse than any other game in terms of stupid smack talk) I am reasonably competent within.

Some FPS online games can get rather annoying at times. Finding a good server without any idiots or nerd ragers. Sometimes you get kicked for just being good at the game and the mod thinks you are cheating.

Single player games give you all the fun without any of the social interaction!

Not me. I'd rather play against real opponents than the predictable, boring, and scripted events that an AI one offers. I generally don't give a damn about video game storylines either and care more about how they immerse you than playing towards towards a CGI cutscene.

Preferably I'd game with people IRL whether its a LAN or a console game. Single player experiences generally are uninteresting to me and lack the replay value that multiplayer ones offer.

I don't play much online, if I want to be harrassed by random tossers I'll put in some overtime :p

Short of WoW, I rarely play online unless I go to the LAN centre with a group of mates.

At least 50% more responses here because of the title, I'm sure. Guilty.

I actually started painting and playing Warhammer as a crutch when I quit WoW. Which I badly needed to do! And I don't miss it a bit; it wasn't nearly as fun or well-designed as most single-player RPG's, and the multiplayer element suckered me in more than it entertained me.

Imagine if in Diablo II you had to wait several hours on 24 other people before you could all take down Andariel or even Diablo, could only do it once a week, at a regularly scheduled time, and had to clear dozens of lesser bosses over and over to gear up beforehand, LIKEWISE a few times a week at a scheduled time whether it was convenient or not.

Hell is other people.

That said, Online multiplayer games are much, much better experiences with established friends rather than the frothing, mannerless rabble. Get a good group to play with. Finding one, however, is the hard part.

Diablo 2 with random pubbies was a boring grind. Diablo 2 with friends from school was a great experience. Same for Team Fortress Classic.

The elitism on WoW is absolutely disgusting.

Xbox live isn't so bad and I mean most jerks there are very reactive so you can screw with their heads.

We could just make a Dakka Gamers Group with a stickied page showing who plays what with their respective screen-names, so we can get some Dakkamobz running around.

Agreed.

Some games can be good fun against other people, but even so they almost require friends to fight alongside.

And I dont know how the hell they do it, but on DOW online, Im sorry but in the time it takes me to build 2 buildings, you have a massively huge army already? No friggin way

Mario Kart is 9 kinds of unfair cheatvalanche as far as the computer is concerned. Rubber Band AI was never used in such a blatant manner.
Part of the problem of online gaming I've noticed is that their really isn't a way to keep experienced, knowledgeable players from preying on "younger" players and chasing them out of the game forever. I like Starcraft, but the standard playing level of 99.9% of the players still stomping around online is somewhere between obsessed and "merged with with the motherboard of their computer into a horrible, twisted hybrid of man and machine; containing both the computing power and speed of a computer with the raw evil and spite of an arch-nerd". I can't have fun playing that game online because I don't devote my life to figuring out how to make a zerg rush work in under 3 minutes.

I only play online with friends. I am too intolerant of team killing pre schoolers, whos parents obviously dont know how to raise kids properly, so they let them go onto a gory video game and anger the good people who are just trying to have a good game with their friends.

Ok... rant complete.

Online is cool for Pokemon, Scrabble, fighting games and DDR. Maybe an FPS now and then, but I'm not a huge fan of the genre so i get my one or two glory moments and otherwise tend to get pwned :p
